what if i dont want to read all of it
Been having bad luck with slots for newbie friendly adventures already being filled out so there’s that
Focus on the first 2 chapters - how to play the game and how to make a character
Then read other elements as it's relevant
ok
You're not expected to memorize it all
I've played this game for years and I still mess stuff up or forget things
That's okay - it's a game
cool
Just gotta be patient and check often, I'm sure you'll find one it just can take a while
Me asking every second 'can I sneak attack this guy' as a rogue while I'm standing right in front of him
I'm new to DnD not experienced at all but I 100% assure you I will still be doing this 5 years from now
hey can someone halp me make a character
I suggest playing around with the character builder on DND beyond, it has a tutorial mode that walks you through every step of the way
Doesn't even have to be a useable character yet, I think just playing in the builder is a good exercise
thanks
thebuilder is like at lest 10 pages
or really like 30
it feels like to much for me to remember
You're learning something brand new - it's going to feel overwhelming.
Take your time, read the rules, work at creating a character as you read the section on building a character. And you'll eventually end up with a workable character. If you run into any specific issues or have questions about something, ask.
Many folks here are willing to answer specific questions.
But many of us don't have time to teach someone D&D one on one
ok
hi!... i'm new here... but I was hoping to find spanish community here :C
Welcome! As a note this server requires all posts to be made in English per the server rules. You might have better luck searching for a Spanish gaming/ttrpg server using Discord's server discovery tools.
hi im also near here
yep! I know
oh
If you're new to D&D check out #learn-to-play for useful information and resources to help get you started learning.
I was googling for some servers and end up here hah
Ah well we are the official D&D Discord server ran by Wizards of the Coast
There is a lot to read - but remember you don't have to memorize it all. Take your time, focus on the first 2 chapters of the free rules and try your hand at making a character. Also don't hesitate to ask specific questions.
It's going to seem overwhelming because it's a brand new thing.
i played a game yesterday for the first time
Nice!
yeah i made a character
not really sure if its good or not
probably should make another but
I've played pathfinder one time ago but forgot how to play again xd
Yeah try making another "for practice" and then feel free to check in with folks in #character-discussion if you're looking for feedback
Pathfinder 1 was a spin-off of D&D 3.5 (an older edition of D&D).
D&D is currently in 5th Edition and is, IMO, simpler and easier to get into than D&D 3.5.
how many characters have you made
ohh I see... but all the "gameplays" I have seen were from dnd, so I'm looking to play dnd now 😄
Hmmm. Give me a sec to check (most of mine are on DnDBeyond)
where are the rules? are they in a pinned message in this channel? pls direct me
Yep - check the pinned messages
sorry to ask this but, is there a link here to learn more about dnd? or should I look for the official site?
ohhh that's what I need
so sad I can't speak in english, I would love to play with people here haha
I have 79 characters.
DnDBeyond is a digital toolset and marketplace (owned by D&D now). It provides various tools including digital character sheets.
do you use a main one
Your text here is pretty good - if speaking isn't your thing, you can check for play by post or text-based D&D games.
thats alot of characters
waaw dind't know that exist, so coool thx!
I have several main characters (different campaigns/games).
Dagon Irontusk, half-orc battle master fighter with a cursed glaive
Zagezelk, Loxodon Wild Magic Barbarian
Loudroar Pridekin, Leonin Path of the Totem Barbarian
?tag new online
That's an article on how folks can play D&D online
ok thanks
To find a game here you can use our Looking for game channels - please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use them
do you host one
I am not currently running any games with openings sorry (also note it's off-topic to solicit/organize games in the discussion channels - please use the Looking For Game channels to find a game, see #find-a-game)
oh ok my bad
Hi! I recently beat Baldur's Gate 3, which sparked my interest in Dungeons & Dragons. I started watching Dimension 20 on YouTube and absolutely enjoy it! Now, I want to dive deeper into D&D, join a group, and learn how to play. Is there anyone who could kindly guide me on how to join a group or where to begin my journey in playing?
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.

Hi
Evening. Feel free to ask any questions
what would be best backgrounds for horizon walker ranger with all the new rules?
Any you can always use the coe rules for stats, otherwise, outlander
I created a guild called the Hollow Lantern as part of my character’s backstory. It has its own ranking system, guild roles, magic items, and a serious tone that contrasts with my character (a small happy plasmoid). Is that too much worldbuilding for a player to bring in, or is it okay if I talk to my DM about it (I'm new so I don't know)
You can always talk with your DM about it, but as long it wont affect the adventure it wont be a problem. Just don't expect the Hollow Lantern to have any relevance to the story unless you work with your DM to integrate it (Which is entirely his or her choice)
Characters should be backstory-light so that they can work with any story
Do you have a DM yet or are you still looking?
Yeah I am aware that it would probably won't have relevance to the actual story, its just a way to add more to the RP part of D&D
It always depends on the adventure and game, if it’s a official adventure they would sometimes ask for you to stick with what’s there, homebrew and they allow world building yuh
hey guys! my friend is trying out dnd for the first time and wants to be a paladin, what race is recommended??
Honestly, choose whatever you like!
Any species really. Stats are not tied to species any more so they should play something that interests them.
ok!
Finding a D&D group online is so hard. Most require you to pay. And the free to play have like 100s of players pick up games
Most don’t require you to pay and where are you looking? Yes it can take a while but Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
Im looking on roll20 and this server
Have a read of that guide, iirc you can filter on roll20 to remove the paid games
hello anyone a champion i can join
Asking if you can join a game like that won't get you anywhere. Finding a game can take time, especially if you want a game that lasts and players that you get along with. I recommend checking #find-a-game instead.
hi
I am new..
like really new..
so how do you roll a dice online?
I only know basics of dnd from simplified videos
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

- [How does it work?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Where do I join?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Frequently Asked Questions](#learn-to-play message)
well depends on what program you use, if you use dnd beyond, you can roll in your character sheet, if you are on roll 20 it has a built in roller
there are character sheets...
holy shit...
ok how do I make a good character?
a good character you make by making what you want to play, every character is good. For the vast majority of campaigns it doesnt matter what you play and you shouldnt stress about minmaxing
is there a limit to what your character can be? like specific list to pick from..
or can he be anything, like any race and any role..
you can pick everything yourself, but the list to pick from is limited, its a pretty big list so i doubt you will have issues, check out #learn-to-play for more pointers
ok one last question do you assign stats yourself?
as in your ability scores?
reading through the material on dnd beyond will solve that quite quickly, they have some great guides. As for your ability scores, the main two ways of getting them are by rolling dice or point buy.
Point buy is best for starting out, and its widely used
Standard array is recommended. The basic rules even include a table with suggested distributions:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#StandardArraybyClass
Though the method (standard array, point buy, or rolling) is ultimately up to your DM.
Hello peoples
I've never really played DND itself before, but I've seen plenty of videos and related content about it. The closest experience I would have to it would be text roleplay (for RP), Fantasy games from TES (4, 5, and ESO), and Arma (Playing a Scenario made by a GM/DM)
Welcome.
Thanks bro, also for a bit of fun i decided I'd try building my first DND specific character
idk if its balanced or if anything makes much sense on it (theres a lot of numbers on the character sheet) but i got it done with a bit of research on DNDbeyond
im reading through a basic handbook rn (free one, i cant spend 60$ for the full player handbook)
If you’re using the free rules, it’s definitely balanced.
i stuck with what i thought was pretty basic
core rules mainly
on the sources tab for the character preferences i chose 2014 core rules, expanded rules, and core rules so 90% of what i have on there is from there
i was thinking it maybe wasnt completely balanced cause im looking at my Saving throw modifiers and it says i have +0 constitution lol
U probably want a plus 2 for con at least
If u made the sheet on dnd beyond u can probably send a link to let people see it
What class did u go for
Cool
What is your modifyer for dexterity
I would probably switch that with constitution
U will need con alot more than u need dex
Sure
gotcha
+2 Str, +1 Int, +2 Dex, +3 Wis, +0 Con, +4 Cha
with a base of 15, 14, 11, 8, 12, 15 (same order)
I would recommend +4 str +1 int +0 dex +2 wis +2 con +3 cha
U need streanth for your wepons because palidins manly need it to attack
Charisma only needs to b second best because you don't have that much spell slots
understood, would a higher constitution increase my hp at all? 10 seems a bit low to me
Yeah
based on previous experience (base health in most dnd like game sbeing like, 100)
ah, okay. id like my guy to mainly focus on protection, thats kind of his whole schtick
being able to take/block some hits and have a bit of an ability to heal
Health in this game is fully based of class and level
U have the second highest hp in the game
for a bit of context, hes a Male Human Paladin of Helm (i think thats the right one, god of protection?) he uses mainly a shield and longsword
Also u are playing the class with the best AC in the game
Thats basically there ability to block hits
I think that u could probably get over 20 with it
Which is really good
so i was right, tanky with a dash of healer?
Yeah
so to edit my + things, i have my ability scores, which were set to +1, 1, 1. i could put 2 into Con and 1 into strength. that'd cut out +1 dex
my weapon masteries are Dagger and Longsword. im firm on Longsword, but if you have a suggestion for an alternate second weapon, im all ears
Str 16+3, Dex 10+0, Con 15+3, Int 8-1, Wisdom 12+1, Charisma, 14+2
U can only realy make full use out of a dagger or a sheild
I would recommend spears
wdym full use?
i was thinking sword + shield, and if im like disarmed or something, dagger
The nick proaty helps with 2 wepon fighting with light wepons makeing it better for rouges and stuff
I got javelin and spear mixed up u should get that instead because it's a good ranged option because u get 6 of them
And the slow property is good for keeping enermys near you
alright, ill switch mastery to Javelins
Cool
can a holy amulet be any kind of amulet?
like say my guy picks up a cool looking amulet and is like "yeah ill bless this so it can be my holy symbol"
Yeah I think so
Mechanically yes (the amulet is just supposed to be a focus for their magical powers)
so it doesnt have to be branded with a deities symbol?
Typically it would have some indication of the faith it represents, yes. I wouldn't agree that you could hang any old rock on a chain around your neck and say, "yes, this shows my faith in Tyr."
It's supposed to have the branding of your deity/power but... that's not a mechanical requirement
what about an object relating to like, the reason he became a paladin
Think of it more like an outward symbol of what deity/powers they follow so folks in game can go "yep they are a cleric/paladin of <insert power here>"
If it's an item of personal significance to the character, sure you can use it as a casting focus. You just won't get special treatment at any temples or the like because it wouldn't mean anything to them.
say my character had a love who was killed, and he took their amulet to remember them, becoming a paladin and swearing himself to a god of protection
itd be directly linked to his whole reason for becoming a paladin
I think many DMs would be fine with that
That could work
oh sweet. it wouldnt have been an issue if not but i felt like itd be a cool bit of storytelling, weaved into a functional aspect of my character
so, as for gear, i got like 121lbs of stuff atm
someone told me the encumberance formula for dnd is 15x your strength stat
is that accurate at all?
Yes, that's right.
oh okay, so my character can hold 225lbs of stuff
i see no reason to over encumber him with equipment. i have just over 100lbs of pocket space to put stuff
alright, well, thank you all for the help, my characters been updated accordingly and i think im ready to start looking for groups
y'all have been a big help, and given me a bit better understanding of mechanics
Hello People ✨
helloo
90% of activity in this chat in the past lie, hour is me getting help with my first character lol
yeah hes cool
very
Ah I see.
Same, the only experience I've had is like two games of Pathfinder.
my experiences kinda vary
I just finished making a character on my own just to see how things are.
Idk if it's good or not lol.
ive played a few TES games which have some similar character making mechanics
From what I read you're a paladin?
Ah, I've played tons of RPGs with mechanics like DND.
Oooh, I always use brains over brawn.
ive played a mil sim game called arma, so im used to communicating with a GM/DM about game mechanics
So my charecters are usually quite fragile 😅
i also ran a text roleplay event, which is like DMing minus all the dice and panels and stuff
fair enough
i like protecting/supporting people so paladin appealed naturally to me
Ooh how cool, but you also like doing some fighting yourself I'd assume
Or else you would have gone Cleric or something
oh yeah of course, I'd throw hands out of my weight class to keep something at bay for my allies
i remember once in a text roleplay in the Halo Universe, me and a group of my squadmates tackled a brute (big monkey like monster) that was like 6 feet taller than us
How Honorable
I could just DM you the spreadsheet I downloaded
It's not a finalized version but a rough sketch of the charecter so to speak
Yep
I realize you may be talking local currency, but if you have a phone or internet access where you play on some other device, whether that be online or in person, you can invest in the digital only version of the PH for half that at $30 US. The digital version allows you to use those functions in D&D Beyond app and website, which provides a readable copy of the book, a search function to find things, and a character creator and manager for up to 6 characters for free (more characters require a sub). You can always use the digital copy to update sheets in the way you were planning to if you did not go digital.
It was the version on dndbeyond. I'm Canadian, so thats 60ish CAD
Come to think of it my cousin does play dnd maybe I'll hit him up
Yeah, had same problem here. Exchange rate sucks. Cool then. The site just insists on defaulting to paper & digital and sometimes we don't need both. Best to use free when first starting out anyway until you find out if you are addicted as much as the rest of us to invest in the PH.
I used to play AD&D back in the day. I am not good at using tech and get easily frustrated with all the stuff on discord. I would like to learn how to use discord. I would like to just make a character and find a GM ot group who would help me learn how to play on line. No I do not play games on line. I did the marvel hero game several years ago but thats it. When I played it was hack and slash and gather wealth. Thats how we leveled up.
Have you tried looking for game stores in your local area? If you don’t want to mess with D&D Beyond you can always buy the physical books.
I’m on a tight budget and I’m trying to get on disability. Mobility and funds are tough so learning how to use discord is my best option. Thx gotta get to an appointment

Welcome. The bot post above has links to lots of different resources that can help you get started and learn more about 5e. The basic rules for the game are free (under the Quick Links section in the Bot Post) and they contain everything you could need to know to play the game. Additional rule books can be purchased, but they mostly just contain additional player options, and advice for DMs. If you're ok with the bare minimum, its entirely possible to play D&D for free
uh hi to anyone who feels like interacting with this message, im like super new to dnd and i rlly wanna get into it, ive already partially made a character sheet and would maybe like some things that possibly need fixing? dunno where i should... show it off though
You can share your character sheet in #character-discussion here on this server
i cant post images in character discussion... is there a universal text based method or something? (using microsoft paint plus some other free to use character sheets to make it since im the most comfortable with paint)
If you need to share an image in this server, you should upload it to an image hosting website like Imgur, then post a link to the imgur page with your image. Or you can make your character sheet on a sharable platform like google docs or D&D Beyond
mm. i thought the rules said no links though? unless i didnt read close enough-
You can share links aslong as you say what it is, and the link doesn't go against any of the server rules (pirating, anything inappropriate, etc etc)
Yep, if a link is overly suspicious or goes against server rules, then it will be deleted, but if its relevant to the current conversation then its fine
Sharing your character sheet is a perfectly acceptable use of a link
Usually people share a link when sharing characters. DDB has the functionality built in but for other formats, you will need to arrange something.
Have you tried using the official PDF character sheet? You can just type right where you need.
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
oh- no i havent, didnt even know this existed, i was using a yt tutorial on character sheets and i found the one they were using, so i just used that and followed along
Should make updates easier than using Paint. I'd recommend giving it a try.
Hi I’m new here
Welcome! Let us know if you have any questions
Hiya 😄 thanks!
Are some classes based on experience, or are they all just preference based
Some have more choices than others. A rogue will typically focus on getting their sneak attack feature in combat. That means knowing the trigger conditions and how to get them. Wizards will need to be aware of what their spells do and how they work to get the best use out of their capabilities. Warlocks make a lot of their choices early for pact, patron and invocations, so knowing what will be useful in advance can be a help.
I’m not exactly sure I understand your question. Can you elaborate?
There's a command somewhere around here to show a quick guide, I think...
Which command are you looking for? Just the normal new player greeting?
I thought there was one that shows a list of the various classes and their estimated complexity ratings.
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Are classes based on how long you’ve been playing D&D
This helps a lot, thank you. I love the rogue class
No, you could theoretically play any class as a new player. Some are just more difficult to learn than others.
When you make a character, you simply pick which class you want to play. It’s completely up to you.
Well, and any limits placed by your DM. 🙂
I am totally not mentioning this because a DM told me because there was a massive war that killed all the deities, one was not allowed to be a Cleric in their game. (shudder). Collossus statement is generally correct though. DMs are more likely to limit books available than classes.
Sure, but for the purpose of this channel it’s typically assumed that at least the core rules will be allowed at their tables.
Long as it's in the advert, I am down with that general notion.
Yeah, sorry, personal trauma. Will try and hold it next time.
I hate to but in with a question, but in your opinion, if you are going to buy a book, which is better? I'm not sure if I should buy the 2014 Players handbook or the 2024. From what I've read online, it seems a lot of DMs are sticking with the 2014 one for now?
I think I would recommend the 2024 books, because as time goes on, more and more people will be playing with the current ruleset.
Definitely 2024, yeah. There's always an 'edition war' any time a new version comes out, but pretty much across the board 2024 is better than 2014 in almost every way. At least it is in my opinion. And like Bones said, as time goes on more people will play it.
Does it make a difference if you make your character based on the 2024 rules and the DM is running a game from the 2014.
Many people who are still playing 2014 rules are doing so because they're mid campaign, and don't want to have to worry about changing things up in the middle of a running game. Plenty of folks I know, including those running games that I'm currently in, plan on swapping over after they're done with their currently running campaigns.
It does make a difference. For the vast majority of player options, 2024 abilities are stronger than they used to be in 2014. And a few mechanics work completely differently in the new ruleset.
In general,
2014 stuff can be adapted easily for 2024.
But
2024 can't really be backwards adapted into 2014.
That is what I was finding. Like for a rogue, I think the 2024 edition gives you steady aim at like level 3 level, but in 2014 its up to the DM if you get it
If it's any help, this should get you to the 2014 free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
I do think the 2024 rules do a better job of teaching how to play and how to fill out a character sheet as well.
Yeah steady aim with an optional rogue skill introduced with tashas book
Yeah I own tashas. Oh the 2024 seem superior, don't get me wrong. I just wanted to always be a team player and not make things harder on a DM, by building my character on rules that they didn't want in their campaign yet. Or keep bothering him cause as I gained levels I would get access to things earlier.
If you do know your DM is playing with the 2014 rules as a base, then I would indeed recommend the 2014 PHB instead.
Or really, I'd recommend just persuading them into the 2024 rules.
Perhaps better to find your DM first before committing too much on a build
If you are trying to find a game do DMs tell you which rules they are using
If you don't even have a DM yet, I'd definitely get the 2024 one.
Even if not 2014 vs. 2024, there's usually at least some element of a character you will need to modify to customize to the DM's rules.
Usually, but you can always ask, too.
Thank you
At this point, I'd generally assume it's 2024 unless a DM states otherwise.
Hi guys
Welcome!

I got dice a, miniature
is there somesort of local gameshop near you were DnD groups gather regularly?
A library? A school? Any public place with a table and chairs? A private place with a willing owner?
D&D can take place in a lot of places. Just look around. Check public postings boards etc.
typically gameshops work better because they may already have groups there that might let you join, theyre the best spots to investigate if you want to find an in-person group
How do I determine passive perception for my character
Your passive perception is 10 + your wisdom modifier.
If you're also proficient in perception, add your proficiency bonus to that as well.
In other words, imagine you’re making a normal perception check, but you get a 10 on the D20. That total will be your passive score
Ok got it
I see
That's how all passives are calculated, if you're ever asked for passive something else as well (like Passive Insight)
Hey I am asking if anyone is down to tell me how to make a character and what rules to follow
Also I made one but I don’t know if it is legal???
Can mby someone check
Sure! Do you know if you want it with 2014 or 2024 rules?
I think the 2014 rules
Lemme check rq
DnD 5e and the 2014 rules!
That'll be this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Did you pick a class, race and background?
I picked warlock bc it sounded cool and a wizard that does some freakie things
Heck yeah!
Thanks for the rules!
Race I don’t really know what they mean but I picked dragon born
And finally for background man I was like writing an exam giving all I could chat cat translated it to Englisch so the things got chanced a bit
Normally for a practice character you'd figure them as level one, and multi-classing isn't recommended for beginners. Nonetheless!
Background in this means a specific thing, like Acolyte or Criminal or Solider. It comes with a couple of perks.
Your character's history is called their backstory.
Did you pick a background option?
The other big part to a character (aside from skills, spells and gear) is their ability scores. Did you use the options for point-buy or the standard array method?
There it is
i am res cap
Yeah, it's not visible.
Oh my god I don’t know
Oh ok
I think it would be best to create a new character could
do you have any software that you could recommend me
Or how it is commonly done
D&D Beyond is a pretty popular way of doing it.
Is that a website?
Oh yea
Do you want to hop on a call cause it is hard to read messages and thing at the same time
Yes, though I understand it also has an app. Might be an idea when it asks for sources to turn off everything except the core content, just so you can go through the process and see how things work.
No thanks, I can't do a call!
You sailed so much tho I only understand so little
Downloading the app!
Anyway, give it a go on DDB, read the help it offers, if you've got specific questions leave them here and someone will catch up with you when they can.
It is HIGHLY recommended that newcomers avoid homebrew content while learning how to play the game
ok also
the dude that want to organize ( he said he is Doungon Master) said that we will use owlbear
it is an website but i can not find it
the website is called "owlbear rodeo"
Alternatively, he plans to send an actual owlbear to your house.
That's just personal preference. Whatever interface you like better
Can i eat it
…You may certainly try.
Ok
what would you prefer
I use D&D Beyond, personally
wouldnt it be easier if character is already in the right app
ok
I prefer handwritten character sheets, but they’re more time consuming and less useful for an online game where the DM might need to check your sheet.
i dont rally understand can help me with the core settings like include partners and then minecraft and rick and morty
Last I checked Owlbear Rodeo was pretty bare bones, so I'm not sure it really has character sheets
No one uses the Minecraft and Rick and Morty stuff.
More than likely your DM is just using the Players Handbook and would have told you otherwise.
he doesn't speak to me because he is doing sleepy sleepy
ok which sources??
and should i disable all partners?
Players Handbook, or just the free rules. That’s all you probably need.
If there’s more, the DM should have told you.
Hello! Hope you all have a good day or night wherever you guys live. ☺️
Aw hope you have a great day as well!
So I was wondering how do I know what my spellcasting ability modifier is
Spellcasting modifier is based off the ability your class uses to cast spells. So for example a druid uses wisdom to cast spells.
So their spell attack modifier would be:
spellcasting ability modifier + proficiency bonus
And their spell save DC would be:
8 + spellcasting ability modifier + proficiency bonus
alright i think my character gonna go insane, so how do i act them out
im going to use the highest stat they have (charisma) to reflect what type of insanity they will do (courtesy of lobotomy corp), but i have no idea how
what would someone with high charisma do when insane
maybe influence others to slowly go insane too?
as in they will start to go crazy and will start to cry/scream or something
though im not sure if the party would like that
hi everybody, im sort of new to the community and I have no idea how to do any of it 😥 any suggestions on where I should start? I want to play so bad but its all just so overwhelming

What you need? Finding a group? Character creation? Rules?
Mainly all of it, I’d love to find a group to play with honestly. I need to create a character though, im watching yt videos on how to do it
but im still confused :(
for starting, ask youself who you want to be in a fantasy world. Don't look up at races, classes, etc. you will find the one that fits after. So, who do you want to be?
I think wood elves look pretty cool. The part im confused about is the math to be honest
sword!! those look awesome
how they learned how to fight?
hmmm, can it be a family member or something?
Like, he learned from his uncle?
yep. They will be an adventurer, why they choose this path?
The influence of his friends, they wanted him to tag along so he learned to fight with his uncle.
Does that work?
yes, you'll might review this with your future dungeon master (like are the members of the party your friends? How y'all met each other? ect.), but now it's not important
Okay, amazing. Is that it with the more character-based stuff? Then onto the math with the abilities and all??
you'll think about their physical appearance, age, height, ect. later, you'll find those in the second page of the character sheet
Ooh okay, I eventually need to print out a sheet :,)
I have one saved I just havent printed it yet
now it's time of math. I suggest you to use a D&D 5e Point Buy Calculator. Point buy is the most used to do balanced stats, in case your DM uses other method you can eventually change it (the other one used often is dice). Search it, insert the race and subrace and it will calculate you all the thing of that race. You can add or remove points from the statistics. Each add cost some point (you have 27 of them) so use them wisely. For now, you need higher stats on Strength and constitution
also, stats lower than 10 will give you a penality (like -1) on checks or skills based on that stat, and if you have intelligence lower than 10 you'll won't be able to speak like a normal person

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
okay, so I have
Strength - 15
Dexterity - 12
Constitution - 13
Intelligence - 12
Wisdom - 11
Charisma - 10
I suggest you to avoid odd numbers because the modifier scale every 2 points on the ability
I did the even math
Strength - 15
Dexterity - 12
Constitution - 14
Intelligence - 10
Wisdom - 14
Charisma - 10
if you like it
I do like this
you'll need to write the feature of your race on the sheets
Features as in physical ones or like, abilities?
I see them now
you don't need to write them all, like bonus dex or age
you need to write Darkvision, Keen Sense, Fey Ancestry, Trance and Mask of the Wild in the FEATURES & TRAITS section (bottom right of the first page)
I advice you to use an editable pdf of the sheet, it's more quick to write and modify, after you can still print it
right, that makes sense
for the class, it's fighter
"Fighters share an unparalleled mastery with weapons and armor, and a thorough knowledge of the skills of combat. They are well acquainted with death, both meting it out and staring it defiantly in the face."
if you like the concept obv
honestly use dnd beyond and if you want to play a race, class or subclass they dont provide you can just download it half already filled in and fill in whatever you watn custom
Or you can get it onto your sheet by pasting the relevant stuff into a homebrew option.
But yeah, I also like having physical paper to write on.
I mostly just use paper for session notes but i also mostly dm so i need to have a lot of docs at once
Me too my docs are a mess 😭
i can be brutel, in really lore heavy sessions i sometimes orgnise my info into whole different browsers
for this, i thought it was supposed to be under or equal to 27, mine says 31/27. Did I enter something wrong? I modified these numbers to match yours
are you using standard array?
Im using the calculator they gave me, I did the things so it was 27/27, but they said avoid odd numbers. They offered a fixed version, which was the one mentioned above, and I changed it to that
did you insert the race and subrace?
I did, the race is Elf and the subrace is Wood elf
I’d show you if I could
so with woodelf i believe you get a +2 to DEX and +1 to WIS
to me it's 27/27
hang on, ill try to re-enter it and see if I just screwed smth up
oks
it still says 31/27 :,(
can I dm you a screenshot of my screen, just to check if I did something wrong?
15 is 9 points, 2 14s is 14 and 2 10s are 4 so 9+14+4 which should be 27
yes
wait you have a 12 as well wich is another 4 so you are at 31
we unriddle it 🙂
Does the total score go in the box of the things, or the little circle at the bottom?
I honestly kind of prefer standard array over points cause it kind of forces you to have a more significant weakness and be good at something, where as with points you can be mid at everything which usually isnt fun for you or your fellow players
Fillable PDF? Whichever way suits you.
I would recommend putting the modifier in the big circle (you will use it more) but its dealers choice
Would this be better for #character-discussion ?
It's a new person getting started - so it's fine here for now but yes, do consider running character build discussions in #character-discussion
Thanks 😊 I totally agree on helping new folks. I just figured after an hour of dinging my phone lol
Hello
whats up
Hey, I just joined here so I can learn how to officially play and setup characters
And prob more
Check out #learn-to-play which includes some useful resources to get started!
Ok thx
What spells would a lvl16 drow necromancer lich have?
Whatever you’d find helpful and/or flavorful for your character, though being a Lich isn’t an official player option
I’d reckon Toll the Dead, Animate Dead and Create Undead are going to be some staple spells
Are there any Europe/UK based folks here? (:
Sure! But if you're asking for group finding purposes, it's best to check in the lfg channels. #find-a-game has an overview.
I’m from Europe!
Whhheey!! 😄
Hi Everyone
How do I start playing and making a character?
Start with looking through the useful information and resources in #learn-to-play
The 2nd chapter in the free rules goes over the steps to make a character
Feel free to ask any specific questions here or in an appropriate channel as you run across them.
Hello everyone, i am not new to dnd but im new to this server so i think this is the best channel to ask in. Is every server 18+? Or is it possible for a 16 year old to join a game?
Welcome! Many online games are going to be 18+ due to social/legal issues surrounding minors.
But not all games are 18+, just know that as a minor you're likely going to have a harder time finding a game that will allow a random minor to join.
Thanks for answering
If i can’t find a server here that is not 18+ then i guess my only option is to dm myself?
You can check at local game stores, see if your school has a D&D club, and even sometime local libraries host D&D games.
Dnd is not very popular in my country
D&D isn't designed for solo play - there are some folks who have made rules to allow for solo play but that's not how D&D was designed
I know three people that dm but the issue is that two of them dont have time and the third dont respond when you text him
I never even thought of soloplay as i always have viewed dnd as a fun social game
Have you tried some of the D&D servers being advertised in #looking-for-community ?
Ill try
You could always try your hand at being a Dungeon Master and running the game for some of your friends - being a DM is another way to play D&D
I dont really have friends atm because i just graduated middleschool and none of my friends is going to be going the same places anymore
But in a month or so i will start highschool
Might try my luck there then
Thanks for your time and help, its really appreciated
You're welcome! And good luck with your D&D game search!
Maybe HS will have a D&D club... 🙂
Hopefully and thanks
Does this server have a LFG channel
#find-a-game Yep!
I just checked figured out you gotta add it ty
Also gentle reminder to folks - please remember to follow our User Safety rules and don't share potentially personally identifying information such as exact age, etc. We've unfortunately had previous incidents with creeps trying to target minors so please be careful.
👍
Oh mb
Forgot about that
It was kind of hidden under a thread under the rules
Yeah we have the general rule principle and then the thread provides more context and explanation for what the rule means and examples of what's prohibited.
Altough im not really worried about creeps on discord
Still just good internet safety practice
If someone goes to my dms i can just give them a big fat BLOCK
We also get a bunch of scammers on Discord
Ik
The less info you give them, the better
Sup yall 👁🫦👁
Someone tried inviting me to a fake discord hypixel server but again i could just block
Hello
Welcome to the official D&D Discord run by Wizards of the Coast!
If you're new to D&D we have #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel with useful info and resources to help get you started.
In my opinion the most important rule in dnd is to shut up when its not your turn
And have a rough idea of what your character will do when your turn comes up is also a good tip
Oh and focus on ensuring everyone at the table has fun, DM included
We're playing a game to have fun together
Sometimes having to much fun can be a little bad
One of my dnd groups once spent 3 six hours session doing basicly nothing
No they just tested their level up
I probably should have joined the official DnD server way sooner but
I was a ranger that finally hit lvl 3 so i tried to get a wolf companion

See above.. #learn-to-play and reading the first 2 chapters of the free basic rules will give you a good start. You don't have to memorize everything. It just gives you a framework to go back later and check and sets expectations of how the game plays.
Id like to prove a point so im doing some research and I'd like to ask
Water according to 2 individuals in dnd since physics don't apply here
Is not a "great." Conductor for electricity yes?
What sort of point are you trying to prove in the first place?
It this a dnd rules question?
Yes to a degree
To the degree that it's a rules question, water does not interact with lightning damage.
Im trying to prove water is IN FACT conductive of electricity and there are ways you can make it conductable even in a game such as this
Cause it says its "not a good conductor."
Good being the keyword
Meaning it still is
Good isn't a rules keyword. It would be up to the individual DM and the wording of the game features you're using to make a ruling.
I'm not sure what the point is still.
You can make the water more conductable to electricity
By making pure water impure
So lightning spells interact with water better
By the rules, no. DnD isn't a physics simulator.
If the DM makes something up, sure. But that's true for everything.
Even if we went to real world science here, pure water is actually a bad conductor. The reason we associate water with conductivity is that dissolved ions in the water carry the charge.
Thus, a rule that water does not in D&D isn't without some scientific backing either since D&D doesn't get in to the weeds on questions of whether ions are present to carry charge.
But thats the thing
You can make water impure
So can that not be applied to dnd?
It can't unless you homebrew it. And that umbrella both covers everything and also excludes most games by definition.
Theoretically yes, but that makes it a DM override of the rules which a DM can do but it still isn't a rule of the game.
That is just so weird to me
But ok nvm
I guess lightning is useless in water battles
Dropping that asap
It's largely exactly as useful as everything else except fire damage.
Well, still less useless than fire... fire gets it's damage halved.
I guess water doesn't evaporate either
Lol
Then let me ask this
Does water FREEZE in dnd
Let me quote something, which we find in the "Ensuring fun for all" section of the DMG:
Rules Aren’t Physics. The rules of the game are meant to provide a fun game experience, not to describe the laws of physics in the worlds of D&D, let alone the real world. Don’t let players argue that a bucket brigade of ordinary people can accelerate a spear to light speed by all using the Ready action to pass the spear to the next person in line. The Ready action facilitates heroic action; it doesn’t define the physical limitations of what can happen in a 6-second combat round.
Or is this a no too
some spells do, because they say they do
So basically unless a dnd dev had the foresight to include that it interacts in such a specific way with something you're best bet is to assume it doesn't work
That's a fairly good assumption, especially when it comes to combat or damage.
Got it
The rules try to simplify things by not getting too deep in to these things and leaving the rest up to DMs to house rule if needed. Personally, I prefer it this way. There would be all the interactions for a DM to learn too and the game would be less accessible. One of 5Es strengths is it draws in people that would not have been drawn to earlier editions due to how it is written to do that.
Hello... ummm, i'm new in D&D i love the type of gameplay that... well, is based on it but never tried to play it myself in the 'original' way, i play games like world or warcraft and some others that, well, i guess keep some of 'D&D essence' to name it some way, i created my own character and tried to... make a campaign?, but i'm more of a player, not a GM, so... i just want to play some D&D and see what i find at the end, i suppose
I'm new to D&D too and I was hoping to play too!! I have no experience but I really want to try it out cause I'd honestly love to DM eventually but I can't right now cause I have no game experience yet
Yeah, i really want to be in a party and see how it goes, i just need a group and... idk, know how to do a better character with the time
I've already done one but... idk, is kinda mid i guess
Yessss, if we can find someone with experience man that would be sick! I kinda want to try a one shot or something along those lines to dip my toes in before going into the deep end of a double digit session campaign

I've already readed some guides in the page, but still i'll check it
Also thank you Colossus! I've read through some of those but I do appreciate it! Also thank you for pointing us in the right direction 🙏🏻
Hi guys
Welcome!
does soulknife 2019 and soulknife 2020 have the same number of dice as tasha's?
equal to twice proficiency bonus
@formal valve @whole badge i dont have any dm experience but i do have alot of player experience (a couple of years) and i have wanted to try dm’ing for some time now. If you would like i could set up a oneshot so the two of you can get a taste of dnd
And i accepted already
I assume you meant 2015 (SCAG) and UA (2019). 2020 is Tashas.
The 2019 UA had no psionic dice.
2015, 2020 and 2024 all do have dice equal to your proficiency bonus.
A goblin should have 15 AC due to their shield right? I'm doing 2d6 since I don't have d8 and I kinda don't wanna do the +/-1 to make a d6 like a d8. Anyways that should be pretty fair right?
The players get 30 unallocated ability score. Would this difficulty be too easy? Or just right? (Total noob at this)
AC only matters for attack rolls, wherein the attacker rolls a d20.
Well, here's a goblin warrior: https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/5195050-goblin-warrior
Their equipment is accounted for in their stats.
If the attack roll equals or exceeds the AC, then the attacker rolls for damage.
Since it's a d20 roll, though, a lack of d8s shouldn't have any affect on a target's AC.
The AC of a goblin depends on which goblin stat block you are using. For example, a goblin minion has 12 AC but a goblin warrior has 15 AC
If you're adjusting the number of points available for ability scores, remember to still use the table for point-buy - it's not the same as just dividing them up.
If you're worried that replacing d8s with d6s might make an impact on their damage rolls, you could adjust the target's HP instead.

As to replacing a d8 with 2d6, how does that work? Just take the highest die, accept that the upper outcomes (7-8) can't be hit?
Oh wait, switching 1d8 for 2d6? That could definitely skew things, especially if the total isn't capped somehow.
For reference, 2d6 has an average roll of 7, while 1d8 has an average roll of 4.5
Trading it for 1d6+1 would work better, IMO.
Or use 1d10 and reroll if you get a 9 or 10.
Or use digital dice on your phone, which you can do for free.
Digital Dice would be my recommendation as well. Honestly, I find them much more convenient, and often use them even when I have a physical one with me
Especially when paired with a digital character sheet (like D&D Beyond's) that can automatically add your modifiers as well.

hi i want to make a sorcerer character how do i do that?
Hey there! I recommend starting with the rules on creating a character. They are separated into steps that you can read up via the provided links:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
If you prefer a DIY approach, you can fill out a character sheet yourself:

A more convenient tool-assisted approach is using the character builder:

Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.

Hey, if I wanted to buy my GM a book on Dnd beyound, how do I gift it to them?
the PDF I mean, and have Dnd beyound recoginze that they have said book, so I can have access to the feats and such for my character?
There is an option to gift digital books but before you do, does the DM allow the content you want to use
No point buying a book you can’t use and why not buy it for yourself
thansk
Are you aware that content sharing works both ways? I assume you want to gift this book to the DM because they are the one enabling content sharing and you want it to be shared with the whole party, but D&D Beyond's content sharing applies to all books owned by everyone in the party. So if you own a book, it will still be shared with everyone, even if your DM doesn't own it
thanks man.

the bot post above has helpful information for getting started. The "Basic Rules" in the Quick Links section are free. It explains the process of how to play and how to make a character
What is constitution
Toughness, health, vitality. Higher Constitution gives you more hit points, better chances against poison.
It is one of the six ability scores, which are the main numbers that make up your character. You can read about the others here:

question! just started with going through the DnD rules till I realized there is a 2024 edition. Should I switch to that one? Is it objectively better or is it more of a sidegrade than an upgrade?
I'd say it's an upgrade, though not a massive one. You'll find some people preferring 2014, others have started switching over. Since it came out last year, we're still sort of in a transitionary process.
As a personal note, all 3 of the groups I'm part in have now switched to 2024.
would you say it is new player friendly?
Yes, especially the new Player's Handbook and Dungeon master's Guide
The new basic rules are free by the way, and cover most of the Player's Handbook and good chunks of the DMG and MM: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/
oh HUGE
thanks for the information
anything that is considered a downgrade by the community?
Mostly specific details and some dungeon master material. The way stealth works has been changed, though without getting into the weeds there, it's just a different approach from 2024. I could live with either.
Really, seen from the outside, it's a bunch of nitpicks in my opinion.
is mixing the best of both worlds a way to do it?
You could, but I wouldn't recommend it. It will make it hard to track.
And I feel like if you're just starting out, you're never going to notice the differences. It's a matter for rules nerds (like myself) to agonize over. 😅
The game will be fun either way.

Hi y’all!!
I was torn between Druid and Bard because those are my two main classes 😭😭
Well Bard/Wizard and Druid/Ranger
Hi
Hi, me and some of my friends are new to dnd. There had been one session so far and Im trying to be the dm for the next one for a one shot. The thing is, we didnt really kept ourselfs to the rules last time but I want to at least try to follow them, how would you deal with the situation?
Say that as part of a group chat before you start the next session. Provide cheat sheets to assist.
Check out Peril in Pinebrook, that'll help you get a handle on the rules.

Hello
Welcome everyone who’s new to DnD
Just remember that we are here to answer basic questions about DnD not any DM or anything that isn’t related to basics of DnD
There are other channels you can go to for answers to other questions
We will let you know where to go to if your question isn’t related to this channel
Hi! A few of my friends including myself are interested in playing a campaign, just a simple oneshot but none of us have played a genuine campaign. I was honestly just wondering about the basics and how the rules work before I start trying to find a dm
First of all welcome @delicate cloud
The best way to start is to read through the basic rules that are available for free on here and it’s a lot of information but a great read #rules
It also shows how to create a character sheet
But depending on how fast you can learn you might end up becoming a great DM in the future
But DM or Dungeon Master questions are asked in #dm-discussion
If you have any questions about the basics please let me know @delicate cloud
That’s the server rules,
Free rules are in the pins

Get a copy of peril in pinebrook it’s a self contained starter one shot perfect for young new players with hints and tips for new DMs
You can print it out too
Comes with pre made simplified characters
tysm! I'm doing a timeloop based campaign
so I wrote a campaign where I chose one player to have a cursed talisman in secret
Where would i find a group to play with as somebody very new to d&d but familiar with roleplaying i want to play but i cant find anyone preferably an online group btw
if anything happens to their talisman i.e. it gets wet, cracked, scratched etc and they die after, they immediately wake up back where they started
historical zombie apocalyse btw, haha but I am having trouble with the combat
Run something pre written for them if both them and you are new
Is this a place we’re I can meet people using dnd beyond to call and connect on discord to have sessions
hi
Yes have a look in #find-a-game (read it carefully)
Hiiii
I have created a character what do I do now?
You could share what you've made in #character-discussion for feedback, or check out games on offer in #looking-for-players . Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Hi all!! My partner and i have recently started playing DnD, weve started with, Dragons Of Storm Wreck Isle, and we are loving it!! Im playing DM, my partner is playing a PC, and im kind of guiding her through this journey. Ive managed to get some friends that would like to try out DnD aswell. i was just wondering if you guys had any suggestions for another premade adventure we could run that is beginner friendly (more or less XD). ive heard that "Curse of Strahd" is quite fun and starts at level 1. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Curse of Strahd wouldn't be very new-player friendly IMO but it is a great adventure. I'd keep that one for later.
I'd recommend any of the other starting adventures. There is one called Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk, which is a starting adventure (from level 1) that also includes a continuation up to level 11.
I would advise against Curse of Strahd. The adventure really only starts at level 3 (Death House is a bit of a cop out) and it's very sandboxy, very little DM guidance.
Agreed with UndyingNoob though, it's a good adventure. If you've got some experience under your belt. It's themes are pretty heavy sometimes and you need to be comfortable both with improvising, foreshadowing and tying together disparate plot threads.
You could also jump into homebrew.
Or one of the anthology books, actually. They feature a lot of shorter adventures akin to Stormwreck Isle that you can find a way to tie together.
Hello I've heard and watched some videos about DND like games (mostly magic the Noah) but I haven't actually played anything really like it so Im really lost and don't know where to start with character making and all...

Character Sheet
To keep track of important information about your character, you need a character sheet, whether it’s a printed character sheet, a digital character sheet, or plain paper. Choose whichever style of sheet works for you, and then embark on creating a character! Chapter 2 of the Free Rules walks you through the steps of character creation.
If you're struggling with the myriad character choices available, premade characters are a great way to streamline character creation and get playing. All you have to do is browse through the available paper or digital options to see which is most appealing.
If you just want to learn about how the game plays and the core rules, check out (no need to memorize!) the first chapter and the Glossary of the Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
i made so many characters
and only one G sheet, and i hate that G sheet's are esier...
DM me if you have questions.
Like from scratch? I can send you a pic of what a clean one looks like lol
You just gotta copy it
Kk
There are existing GSheet character sheets available, like this one:

How do you play DND online
Here's an overview:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
The thing that magic the noah does is incredibly simplifyed and not really like how an actuall game would go
The basic rules are up there
If there's anything you need help with like suggestions for what class to play and stuf I can help
Nah i just want to know how to do a character sheet and how the game works i know the class i want
If u use dnd beyond it should help u with that
Which class do u want 2 go for
Like I could help with what to put down
Paladin
And i didnt really under stand the charcter sheet stuff at all
So there are a few stats on it that u need
First is the main stats that should be at the top of the sheet
U basically just need to have strength as you highest then relitivly high constitution and charismer
Then there should be a list of skills
The only difference are which ones u have proficiency in
I would recommend taking athletics as one of them and the rest doesn't really matter that much
What is a magic action?
Then there are ability and stuff that u can find in the description of your class (the main ones are just lay on hands and smite)
An action u use to do smthn magical like cast a spell
I bought a bunch of stuff when I was running a solo campaign for my son but I have almost no experience as a player.
ive made a character and stuff, using some guides and i bought some books on dndbeyond which is MoTM and Guide to everything and i want to actually join a campaign, ive never played before and i wont know what to do :c
If you’ve made a character, you’re already off to a good start.
?help
Wrong command, lol.

@boreal sphinx I also go motm, xanathars and Tasha's.
There we go.
i made a druid eladrin :D
Eladrin is fun.
i preferably want to find a group using DNDBeyond but it doesnt seem like a lot of people like it
There’s a looking for games channel here #find-a-game
i cant find any new campaigns there, they're all ongoing
Maybe try #looking-for-community
Or looking for a campaign on Roll20 or StartPlaying
Or irl, lol.
Adding onto what they said if u have a game shop near u they might b starting a game
i could never do it in person
Oh ok nevermind
Are u playing druid as you first character?
It's a difficult class to play because u have a bunch of things to keep track of
I'm not saying u shouldn't do it its just alot of work
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Druids rank high on the complexity chart, yeah. Nothing is so complex that a beginner can't/shouldn't do it, but it does add some height to the learning curve
I’m still confused about some of the placements here, but I agree on Druid.
It’s a fun class, but it’s spell list is unwieldy and Wild Shape has a lot rules baggage to keep track off (although it is extremely powerful)
I looked at the difference between looking for community and looking for players, and i still don’t know which one I fall under. I don’t have a traditional DnD, but it’s just one overhauled homebrew campaign more similar to an DnD than an RP, still relying on Heavy RP aspects. I’m only looking for 8 players.
It's hard for me to find a game as a beginner
Hey guys! newbie question, if I create a human criminal, I get to choose 2 feats? one is Alert and another feat of my choice?
If you want to DM a campaign, then #looking-for-players is your destination.
Yes
Though the extra feat must be an Origin feat
Thanks!
I have way to many dice for someone who does not play.

Have you gone through the lfg instructions yet?
If you have any hobby or gaming stores in the area, you probably want to check there. A number of D&D groups trace back to routing through a hobby store or other place that either focuses on D&D or gaming which have like minded people in it.
Public message boards might have postings. Libraries can be another interesting place to check. Schools or Universities will probably at least a few running somewhere.
What is homebrew?
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Can we talk about our characters in the characters channel dose it have to be a 2014 character
Unless you have questions about character creation, #character-discussion is your place to chat.
The above Dyno link should answer your question
About our characters?
Yes
Ok
Each character can take one action on their turn, whether it's one of the default actions or one specific to their character. The Magic action is one of those default actions:
When you take the Magic action, you cast a spell that has a casting time of an action or use a feature or magic item that requires a Magic action to be activated.
Hello I want to play dnd but I also want my character to be like sung Jin woo like I summon people to help me fight while also being able to fight on my own
Summoning things is definitely possible, but I'm not familiar enough with the character to give any specific advice here. 😅
You could try asking the folks in #character-discussion, though.
Assuming you're playing 5e, there are a few fighter options that let you summon fighters. Echo Knight Fighter will let you summon a copy of yourself. Astral Self Monk will let you bring your astral self to fight with you. But if you want to summon multiple people who are not yourself, Anscestral Guardian Barbarian might be your best bet. Lets you summon spirits to fight alongside you. Unfortunately, they will be aiding you rather than doing straight damage. You could also multiclass wizard to get summoning spells, but multiclassing as a first-time player can be difficult.
Sorry to say that if you're trying to emulate most anime, esp. Solo Leveling, you're probably going to be disappointed. It's not the type of fantasy D&D tries to evoke.
That said, Corax dropped some solid advice.
Hi, I'm completely new to D&D and these kind of roleplaying games, will I need to learn a lot mechanics to start playing?
Or you can learn on the run?
I personally started out just reading through the Player's Handbook to get familiar with it. Not neccesarily memorizing everything, but you do want to be somewhat familiar. You can find pdfs for free online if you want to look through it. Definitely read up on classes and races when you're choosing, and pay attention to the abilities you choose. That's my personal avice, but other people might do it different ways.
Yeah, I'm doint that rn, that's how I found the discord, through the official website
For my money, it really depends on who you're playing with. Among friends and people you know? You can work through it together, figuring it out as you go. With strangers, though, I would imagine many want you to be somewhat familiar, especially since there's no shortage of resources for learning.
That's not to say you need everything memorized, like Corax said, but you should have a solid base of knowledge.
Cool then, I'm gonna read then. Later I'll see how to actually join a group
Feel free to ask questions as you're working through the rules!
It is possible to learn some things as you go, but you will have a much better experience with the game if you take some time to learn at least the basics of the rules before you start playing. At the very least, you will need a character before the game starts, so learning the rules on Character Creation is basically mandatory. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go.
If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do.
You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
Yeah. One of the boons of reading through the rules is you'll remember that stuff exists. Even if you don't remember the specifics, you can look it up again later

Like a full campaign with a proper ending? Or just one session?
i will always recommend Dimension 20, its made and editied as 2 to 2 and a half hour episodes, half of their first season (Fantasy High) you can find on their youtube channel and majority of them playing is their first time playing and if youre into it all 23ish other seasons are on their streaming platform dropout, always a classic to go back to
for like more non edited long form, critical role is always a good one, legends of avantris is great as well, arcane arcade is pretty good as well
I like the above, but many of them are professionally produced. As long as you can separate their level of polish from expectations for a game without a serious budget, they are tons of fun.
I would recommend the four-session play of the opening to Lost Mine of Phandelver, starting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgNRe76o4_8 To me, it's much more reflective of a game you might actually play in and so might be useful for a newbie!
actually dimesion 20 has all the first 3 seasons on their youtube
Where can I play dnd?
anywhere! you can find a group online, play online with your friend group, in person with a group of friends, at a local game store, just look around and you find groups to play with

Probably human fighter. You just go around bonk'ing people with a sword or another weapon of your choice
Hey , thinking about giving D&D a shot — was it tough to get into at first? Kinda nervous but also super curious how it went for y’all when you first started
For me it went great! The first season I ever played I was a half-elf rogue that was like dark and edgy, then made quick friends with a princess and became less dark and started becoming normal. Then the princess was kidnapped I went on a rampage to get her back. Got her back from the cult that kidnapped her and had to multiclass into Warlock bc I, to spare her life, became a follower of the cults god. Great time, especially if it's with friends. Even when it's not, getting a feel for your character and getting into it is really fun if you give it time
It is a lot to take in, but there’s plenty of guides and hopefully you’ll have a good DM to guide you through it.
The rules are a lot but that actual act of playing it or another TTRPG is very intuitive.
Oh my god, this sounds so cool! It honestly seems like such a fun experience! I think I feel the same way a lot of people do at first — just kinda awkward and a bit lost, since I’ve never really been into this kind of thing before. But your replies are actually making me feel a lot better!
I think I’ll start by watching a few sessions on YouTube and getting familiar with the handbook first. That probably makes the most sense for now
Well I personally never had a bad experience in D&D so I really hope you enjoy it when you eventually play!
I honestly don‘t even know what BG3 is haha but I will look into it!!
BG3 is a very solid starting point to grasp the rules, although there’s quite a few small differences between it and D&D.
Thank you so much I truly hope so too! I didn’t find any Communities in my Location unfortunately but maybe online
Hello me and a friend of mine are still new to D&D but we're willing to learn and want to start a campaign online ♥️♥️🔥
I'll be moving countries soon so I joined this server like... 10 minutes ago.
I don’t think I can, it’s a laundry list of small things and I have not played BG3, I just have players who have.
I'm desperately looking for a campaign to join lmao

I bet it’s way more fun to Play in real life but maybe online is a way to gain some Knowledge for me
Online and irl are quite different experiences.
I filled an application to join a campaign, I really hope they accept me because it sounded so cool
I wouldn’t say one or the other is worse, but there’s certain campaigns I would want to run at a table that I would not try to do online.
I hope so!
I will say if you have any local board game store that isn’t like a Games Workshop or something, they probably do a D&D night.
Well at least I‘m not alone Haha
I have plenty of DMing experience but I just don't have the time to come up with a full campaign, probably not even to run a premade one so I'll just stick with being a player for now
I live in Germany in a smaller City so my chances are a bit Limited but I will definitely look into it thanks!
Best of luck!
You tooo!! <33
If you ever need tips or explanation feel free to ask me for it, I'd love to make sure a new player has the information they need!
Thank you so much I highly appreciate it
And will need it most definitely haha
Oh of course I will let you know and same goes for you
I mean I could use a group to play as well so count me in for that as well
Yeah I've been playing and DMing for a good long while, I'm also around to answer questions. Welcome to the fold
Thank you so much you guys are really kind
Yess!!!
I’m still at the veryyyyy beginning of my journey so I will most likely need to gain more knowledge first
oftentimes scary but back when i started i found the best way to learn was to play
If you ever play bard make sure to flirt with the dragons. It's the main mechanic of the class.
... Not really, but I mean, it's hilarious when it works.
Welcome to DnD new players
Yeah same. I was forced into a campaign when I played for the first time. I had no idea how to play but goddammit I loved every second of it.
Yeah that’s probably how I feel right now but I guess I just have to take the plunge
Lmao
You'll see the memes soon enough.
I looking forward to it
just over 6 years when i first played and i was the only person in the party who had never played before, campaign ended up lasting 3 years and even tho i dont talk to the people anymore theres a good portion of my best memories in that campaign, all of this to say im VERY glad my learning was playing, i think it would have taken away from the magic if i never had those "oh, i can do that??" moments
Sound‘s really cool tbh
Night vision
And the extra stat points certain races get on specific characteristics
In the old 2014 rules? You’re a whole different race. In the 2024 rules? No difference whatsoever.
... Man.
playing a rogue and the first time i realised if i hid first and then attacked i did more damage was like that lego batman gif (i asked my party to just let me figure stuff out on my own until level 5 and then fill me in on important mechanics i wasnt completely hopeless dw 😭 )
damn really? i havent even looked at 2024 rules icl
Yeah, 2024 got rid of half breed races.
... After reading that I kinda don't wanna look at the 2024 rules.
i had no intentions of moving away from 2014 anyways so its no issue but thats kinda crazy
I have a question: If I read the Player’s Handbook, do those rules apply to most sessions and campaigns, or does every campaign basically have its own custom rules? How should I think about it as a beginner?
Honestly if you want half elves you can just use the '14 ones in '24.
each dm does at least some stuff differently, but everything in there is generally accepted as fact unless directly contradicted
you should be able to assume all of it is correct unless ur dm specifically points out a change theyve made most of the time
Hahaha I‘m glad that you had such a nice time, when you Said over 3 Years how can I Imagine it? Like every week or month
Player's Handbook is the base for everything. Basically every campaign follows most if not all rules that appear there. In my case, I follow all of them except how critical hits work
Got it thank uuu
@little ocean most servers do have what is called house rules but they don’t break the rules and the game
Perfect that’s what I was wondering
every week, we got "lucky" in that a majority of the campaign took place in lockdown times so there were some weeks we played like 4x in a week bc we were all high schoolers in lockdown, then when school came back it slowed down a bit, but most of the time averaged out to once a week (this is not the norm unfortuately </3)
Ahh got it tyyy
I have house rules for my server
I heard a lot of people got started thanks to lockdown. I was busy playtesting Wildsea at the time.
Yes during COVID DnD had a huge increase of players and some players ended up being DM or Dungeon Masters
that was me, started as player and moved to dm bc my new friend group didnt wanna dm
im kinda fiending to go back to player though, i get way too stressed running sessions even now lmao
I think that I helped close to a thousand people learning how to play DnD
actually huge, nice one man
Yes because players were at home and had nothing to do
This needs to happen more often, the reason we’re so short on DMs is that not enough DMs encourage players to pick it up.
I really enjoy teaching new players how to play DnD and if they pick it up quickly they could be a great DM in the future
If I see that a player could be a DM I will ask them
luckily i managed to convince one of them to try it out and he said he had fun running a one shot... i might have created my escape route
I’d be willing to pick up and teach more newbies but I have 3 games going as is, lol.
Like right now I’m teaching a player on my server how to be a DM
Getting players to run one shots is the optimal strat.
I really dig helping the newbies too. Watching things "click" is so great
main issue for me is apart from him noone was willing to try, and im going into my final year of uni balancing a club presidency with degree, so i dont have time to prep
and if im the only dm, and the dm cant prep, then noone plays
literally the best feeling
I’ve been around DnD as a player and a DM for almost 36 years now
I’ve played all of the editions of the game and I really enjoy it
That’s so cool
Hopefully you guys will be around for that long and teach many more players this great game
The first one I played was some form of 2nd edition, I think. That young I wasn't in the right space to take it seriously, lol
I started DMing in college because I got tired of the way my friends were doing it
That was A DnD or Advanced DnD
a tale as old as time "surely it can be better than this"
I started with 5e, been almost 10 years now.
Started around the time Dragon Heist came out.
Right, but iirc there's more than one "version" of AD&D, yeah? AD&D, the "Basic Sets", AD&D 2nd edition: electric boogaloo...
Idk which one I played 😆
I played all 3
I had something happen to my character a few weeks ago during a game
It was actually hilarious
We just got through with some combat and my character had to do death saving throws and I play as an Owlyn monk
I made the saving throws but we had a short rest and I was rolling hit dice and what I was rolling was a d8-1
I started out with a HP
We are level 4
So I can roll 4 times
Hi Guys
I rolled 3 nat 1 and a 3 so I had a total of 3 HP
Yayy hopefully
So I couldn’t do anything for the rest of the session
But rest
The dice Gods hated me on that day lol
And got revenge
That dice set goes directly to jail. Do not pass Go
I'm a bit experimented here because I've already completed a campaign.
But I still want to learn.
Pls

Yep
I have finished a campaign a long time ago
So you are a returning player
Yeah... Something like that
Ok how long has it been since you played last
I actually wanna learn how to be a good DM
I just finished my last session last night
And this morning
xd
No tag DM found in category new.
-# Oops (I could have sworn there was a command for this)
Yeah
But I'm interested to participate on a campaign as well
And then I want to learn about DM stuff
Another campaign
And then I learn
XD
The best way to start DMing is to watch other DMs on YouTube and in other servers
Oh Ok
