hello
Hi
Looking for players is where DM's are trying to find players for their games - so it;s basically the game (should) be ready to go, it just needs a player or two (or perhaps a whole group). So that could be a good way to find a game.
I see now, that makes sense. Thank you.
I would start by reading the basic rules, at least the first four chapters on character creation.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The rules are linked above ^
Alr thx
You can make a post in #750812887697588356 or reply to posts in #looking-for-players. Check #find-a-game for instructions on how to post in #750812887697588356

Yes am trying to find a mentor to teach me
what do you mean?
Just someone to help me learn the game
best to read the rules and watch, you can ask any questions here
I am more of a learner by trial, I have read and tried reading but its complicated to understand I learn by doing lol
Practice runs/ etc
so are you looking for a game then?
Yes

@carmine ridge the basic rules are linked above if you need a refresher
Thank you
I am new to DnD, but I'm understanding it quickly, and I love it so far
I am very confident I already learned the basics by reading the player handbook and watching at least 50 videos on youtube, and now I don't know what to do next
Have you tried making a character yet? Just to practice and get a feel for all the bits that make up a character sheet?
Then I'd suggest looking for a group to join to play D&D.
I have made 2

I don't know where to look, and even then time management is a problem, but knowing where to look would be the first step
Thank you
You can also check out places like Roll20 (they have a find a game system) and Demiplane.
Also local comic book/game stores may have D&D games
Well technically all you need to play is the free basic rules, a character sheet, and dice.
If you want more... then yeah, you buy the books, etc.
It's like any hobby really.
I am aware
I'd really love to play one game, however, I'm unsure whether I should just make the plainest basic fighter for a starter
A basic champion fighter can be fun - but totally up to you.
Just a heads up on finding a group/game - it can take a while to find something that will work well for you and your interests and schedule.
In fact scheduling tends to be a huge factor in whether a group keeps together or the campaign ends.
I have made a ranger with the Haunted one origin
As a general rule, you probably want to leave non-practice character creation until after you've joined a campaign
Other than that, an elf druid that really likes tea
Cause why not
Well then
I guess it's about finding a group that will tolerate a newcomer now
Thanks everyone
Most groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as that player shows they're familiar with the rules and willing to learn, and just fit in socially with the rest of the group.
Familiar being they at least skimmed the rules and kind of understand the core mechanics.
I'm willing to learn as much as I need
I am just unsure about what else I should learn, cause I already know mostly everything about stats, skill checks, saving throws and combat
I'm saying mostly cause no, I don't know everything, I didn't play to confirm yet
Then I think it's just a matter of finding a group to play with.
Thanks again
Hi new to the game how many dice do you need to start the game with?
D4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20
having 1 of each will do
Yes
Thanks
you might need to reroll them a bit for somethings but those are the main dice yeah
Why are their so many memes about rangers being bad.... Maybe I shouldn't have chosen ranger as my first dnd class
Or is ranger fine?
Ranger is fine as a class, the major issue is the Beast Master subclass and even then, that's just the Player's Handbook version.
ranger is pretty strong its just the subclasses were uhhh
Ranger is great, but does need a little more communication with your DM about what sort of terrains and enemies might occur.
Because picking favoured enemies 'elementals' and then non ever turning up is def gonna take some sparkle out of your character
Ah im using the dnd beyond app to make a character theres so much information, so as a ranger i can take 2 shortswords or 2 "simple weapons" i want to use a spear or quarterstaff but not sure which other weapon goes with it.
Are you going strength or dex ranger ?
Errrr i havent got a clue im still debating if i should go gnome or hafling lol Is Dexterity for having a pet?
Dexterity measures a character’s nimbleness, their agility, and their fine motor skills. It is used to calculate your armour class and can be used as the ability for making attacks with finesse weapons instead of Strength
I went dex ranger, with wisdom the 2nd highest due to his proficiency being fiends
Ah so a gnome wont have loads of dexterity then.....darn it.
Depends on if your DM uses Tasha's floating Racial modifiers (+2/+1 to any stat) or if you use the stats as written (+2 int, +1 Dex or Con depending on subrace). Forest gnomes do get a +1 dex.
Any character can have a high Dex score if you choose to put one of your highest stats into Dex. It's a simple as that! Most rangers like Dexterity more than strength, but there's certainly no "wrong" way to build a character so long as your group is having fun
The next character on my list to be played is a centaur ranger
Hunter subclass
It is a very interesting class, it can be really strong but because of the Beast Master subclass, many people underestimate the entire class
Hey I'm kinda new to DnD and I'm trying to think of an Interesting warlock idea. I don't wanna play pact of the fiend warlock because it seems everyone uses it. Are there any suggestions?
Oh I have that book
It is basically you having a connection with your patron through a weapon
Or maybe the patron is the weapon itself
Hexblade is very popular, but also one of the most unusual ones, because it's more melee focussed. So it has quite a different build, different recommended stats, and a lot of invocations that others won't take.
That's not a criticism, and I am sure you would have a lot of fun as a Hexblade!
I like the idea of the patron being a cool weapon
Yeah, it is very interesting
Like Jale said, it is not a full caster
It is a hybrid between melee combat and a little spell casting
Hello hello, I am brand new, I have never played a campaign before and madr my first character sheet at like 3 in the morning
Do you want us to take a look at it?
Welcome to the reality of D&D
Well my first character was a death cleric
Sure! is there a particular channel to do so?
Ayyyy nice
You can do it here, and if it's your first one, that would probably be the best place. When you are more confident, character discussions go in #character-discussion
alright, let me screen grab it then, gimme a sec
Easiest to share the link
Otherwise you have to host the image elsewhere like on Imgur
That is a good start
He died last session😅
Okeydokey. Well it looks like you rolled for stats. Usually, you'll only do that if your DM tells you to do it - for your first character, try using Standard Array or Point Buy.
You put the stats in the right places for your class though, which is a great start!
So I wanna go from cleric to warlock. He died fighting a horde of orcs so the party could run away I'm fine with that death
I'd swap CHA with INT or WIS, to make sure you get the most out of your racial bonus. (INT/WIS would stay at +0, but CHA would move up to +2.)
Nice, a heroic ending
Yeah, I kinda figured but I also really like the randomization aspect of the dice roll determining my stats so 🤷♂️
You have given yourself a bag of holding, which is a magic item that you don't usualyl start with
Holy 20 strength at level 1
I actually didnt know that
Sure, but DM's won't usually accept it.
It depends
and yeah, I got a really lucky dice roll mixed with my modifier
I'm literally the opposite
I always tell my players right from the start that in my games we always roll
Don't forget to equip your armor, either.
But do you allow rolls they made before starting?
Or rolls made in your absence?
No, always sheets are made in my presence
thank you for that
Except of course, long time friends who i trust
You have chosen Two-Weapon Fighting. That's not an awful thing if you really dream of it, but you also don't have the right weapons. You can't have a Rapier and a Shortsword: both weapons have to be Light, unless you have a Feat. Your DM will tell you if you are using feats.
Okay, any reccomendation?
Also you have built a strength-based fighter, and really two-weapons are usually assocaited with dex-based builds. I would go for either Dueling and a Sword & Shield, or a two-handed weapon and either Defense for a more defensive build, or Great Weapon Fighting for a more offensive build.
Gotcha. So longsword and shield? Would that work?
Classic choice.
You can use a shield if you to be more tanky
If you want to do more damage, go for the greatsword
Also note, as long as your DM is cool with it, you can totally flavour that weapon to be more exciting than "longsword", if you want to think of it as a Sabre, a Messer, or really any other kind of weapon. This is "flavour", and it's free.
So basically, if I wanted it to be a homemade sword thats attached to his backstory, I could do that?
Cool, cause now I have some ideaaassss. If you can't tell, I focused a lot more on the STORY than the gameplay, I always have been character focused
You're one of mine
I always think on the rp aspect first and then i build the mechanics of the character around that
That's why I love cleric and I'm attracted to warlock
Yeah, and it really helps that Galeem has been a character in my stories for a really long time, I just needed to adapt him to D&D and gradually over the course of his story evolve him into the powerful entity that he becomes in my stories.
In my campaign, ny barbarian has a broken giant's longsword which is statted as a greatsword, and my ranger has had a succession of bxxxxx swords and messers which are statted as rapiers. It's a good way to give more character to the character, without bending any rules.
I feel you
Sorcerer has always been my favorite class
Okay, fixing it up now. for sword and shield, should I go Defence or Protection?
Alright, and I switched to standard array as a placeholder before i do my proper dice rolls
Or Dueling if you want more damage.
Protection is good
Defense is kinda overkill for a shield user
Here's a question: Part of Galeem's lore is that he was friends with a druid who was possessed by a demon. Could I say that the druid gave Galeem a ring that he starts the campaign with?
Up to your DM, unless it's just a trinket
A carved wooden ring with no magical function - almost certainly.
Were would i put a link to a dnd beyond campaign?
You mean to find players? You want to look at #find-a-game and #looking-for-players
Ok ty
Remember, flavor is free! (So long as you don't write any mechanical benefits into your story!)
I was thinking that it starts as a trinket, but then he learns that it was actually a Ring of Mind Shielding (hence why the druid got possessed and not Galeem) but that it had lost it's power because it was attuned to the druid, not Galeem
I chose a trinket that fits my ranger from the horror trinkets
That's what you should discuss with your DM 🙂
It fits his short backstory
I think that trinkets can really add up to your backstory
Horror trinkets?
Curse of Strahd
Damm I don't have that book
Eh, its fine. Just an idea i threw out. Besides, I think Galeem having a picture of his infant son (who I will definitely be making a character sheet for because he is VERY important) is perfect for who Galeem is as a person
It's free on DnD beyond
Curse of strahd is free on DnD beyond?
Is that an automatic vampire reaction😂
I sadly have to go so
If anyone has any questions about that or the ranger feel free to dm
I'm happy to talk
I'm very creative
The Haunted One background is indeed free content, and contains the Horror Trinket table: https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds/haunted-one
It is
Yeah not a thing to mention on the official dnd discord
Sadly it is not everyone's reality to be able to buy everything we want
Still a reality it’s against server rules
Btw, Galeem technically isn't my first character. I forget the name, but I do remember he was a human ranger that suffered from lycanthropy and I REALLY wanted him to, once he became strong enough, could master it and become a werewolf at will. Sadly, it never came to be
What rule is that? This is a legitimate question.
Number 1 on the list of inappropriate content:
• Illegal/Copyright PDF and/or download of Wizards of the Coast official content or the websites that create/use them.
yeah
I haven't posted any links to anything legal, it was just a little joke, sorry that something that small worries you so much
We are just trying to be helpful with letting you know what is and isn't usually considered against the rules.
We are just warning you that the mods will bonk you for talking about piracy
Nobody is offended, just looking out for you.
👀
Noted
See, what did I tell you? They have eyes everywhere
I like it here, just never been in any official server or anywhere where something like this is agains't the rules
And i will now not talk about that kind of thing anymore
And then some fools summon them and they rain down their wrath upon us for the lack of suitable cookies given as offerings
Any Snack is a viable offering
I have a recently open pack of cookies
This server does have high standards of moderation, which makes a lot of sense when you remember that it's for a product that is marketed to kids, and even within the Discord ToS you'll have ages 13-18 present. So there's tight moderation and more safeguarding measures in place than most.
Let's get back to D&D shall we?
Yes, i am sorry for causing this disturbance
I actually did have a weird idea for a campaign that I might do at some point, but I have no idea how
By that I mean I have no idea I'd even get the idea to work since it changes the rules of D&D quite a bit
Don't be afraid to jump straight into the DMing. Starting with a beginner campaign like the free Lost Mine of Phandelver or the current starter set Dragon of Stormwreck isle, you'll get the hang of it quickly.
That said, the more you learn about 5e, the more you might realise that it can be easier to start with another rule system to achieve what you are actually looking for.
Agreed
...what about turning D&D into a roguelike?
If you look into D&D and feel the need to change a lot of rules, you maybe should look into another system
Look for the path of less work
well my viewpoint is, change the rules if it fits the story, regardless of how much work it involves
That is understandable, i only point out that if you go down that path, make it clear to your players before starting the campaign
Oh, trust me. I'd need to
Transparency is key for a nice game
It would still be advisable to learn to walk (DM a written campaign) before you can run (DM a heavily homebrewed ruleset)
Hey quick question lads. Could I replace eldritch blast with anything? Apparently it's really overused
Experiencing dming an official adventure would give you a very feeling on how to do it
You could replace with another cantrip
It is overused because it is the best cantrip in the game
The reason why it's overused is because it's basically a core Warlock class feature: as central to them as Rage is to a barbarian. You can definitely reflavour it, but so many Invocations exist to buff it, you would be severely hampering the warlock character to forego it entirely.
Eh I'd like to try something unique
Plus If I don't like it I can just get it on a level up
Unless warlocks can't get new cantrips
The class table tells you what levels you get new cantrips at.
You're more then welcome to replace it with another cantrip from the warlock list, just know that Eldritch Blast is superior to basically any damaging cantrip
Heres what the brief idea is:
It starts like any other D&D campaign: In a tavern. There's a bounty for a man only known as the Jester King. The part then goes to his domain, and upon entering the castle, the gates lock behind you. It was a trap. So now the party has to find 3 pieces of a key to open the way. Seems simple enough, but what they dont realize is that the castle is enchanted, and every door leads to a new world to explore, with different flavors of loot as well. The story here is that as long as you are in the castle, you will not die. If one party member manages to escape the world alive, the entire party will come back to life, with nothing except the weapon they entered with and some basic clothes. But, to make things easier, there are also Artifacts, special items that stay with you on death.
So basically, the campaign becomes your standard roguelike affair: Live, Die, learn from your mistakes and keep pushing forward. And if you beat the King's towering Guardsman, the Jester King will admit defeat and give you his crown, the source of the enchantment. Now, you have a choice: destroy the crown, and the castle with it, or keep it, and the castle, to do as you see fit
I think if you DM for a bit, you'll see why it doesn't really end up as a fun idea. It might seem good at this point, but once you have taken responsibility for the group's enjoyment for a while, you'll see where this will largely fail to entertain
If nothing else, you are planning for people to die along the way, which means a dead player will be excluded until TPK. In many groups, that could be weeks.
Okay, that makes sense
D&D 5e is a game intended to be played as a group
Presenting deadly situations right from the start is not advised
also seems like we’re getting afield from newcomers and into #dm-discussion
True
Eldritch Blast certainly is the Best Cantrip™, but certainly not necessary. If you're looking for ways to deviate from the norm, there are other damaging cantrips which will still do decent damage. Was it you who was considering Hexblade? Look into Green Flame Blade or Booming Blade from the Tasha's Cauldron supplement. They can put out some nice numbers and synergize with melee combat!
I'll look at them!
It is worth mentioning that if you're going for hexblade, Eldritch Blast has an invocation that allows you to pull the target you hit towards you, which helps with the melee combat part
That is Interesting
I love how hexblade lets you forget about strength entirely
Or dex. Though dex is still useful for AC.
is there a way to convice my family members to play dnd with me or something of that nature?
because i feel like it might be awkward.
What about the game would appeal to them? Do they like telling stories? Fantasy? Using their imagination? Try to engage their interest even while conveying your own, like why you want to try it or what about it sounds fun.
i just feel like they dont have time or dont wanna but i want to get better at in-person dnd but im so shy i thought family would be a good start.
Play a one-shot so that the commitment isn't so intimidating. And while I don't know your family situation, I would say that to them: "I want to play this game, and it requires people. I feel shy around strangers, so I thought playing with you would help me feel more comfortable." Or whatever wording fits your sentiment best.
uhh have u asked them if they wanna play
sadly no im afraid of getting let down
Alas, that's part of the gamble.
thanks you for the advice
yo listen not everyones gonna wanna play dnd and thats fine, not everyone like fanstasy but u shouldnt be afraid of people expressing an opnion or choise thats not favorable. last i checked theres like over 100,000 peeps in this server alone. if they dont wanna play then trust- you'll find people, kind/ nice people who wont judge u. but like u gotta ask em dude
thank you and your right! ill try to ask them then
DND is a collaborative role playing game, voluntery participation is…kind of the point?
There isn’t really a way around talking to other people about playing. We cant speak to your family situation, but you shouldnt feel bad about asking a group you know if they want to explore an interesting with you
Thats also why your local comic or game store is a place to check out. Thats a target environment that is already leaning into the area
Pls dms who r on dndbeyond dm me the link to a canpaign
If you’re looking for a game to join, #find-a-game can get you started.
I you are looking for a game then look in #looking-for-players/ #find-a-game
Yeh sry but in looking for dm bot players and I can't find anyone there who wants it on dndbeyond
#looking-for-players is where DMs post that they're looking for players.
So if you are a player, you can reply to any of those posts you're interested in.
Usually one will come up eventually. Maybe check back there in a little while and there will be one that you are interested in.
Ah yes sorry I'm stupid thx bue

Hi Rockat - welcome!
How do I learn how to play dnd?
We have some resources in this channel's pinned messages. You can find the Basic Rules, and there's a playlist of videos that helps break them down into more digestible bits.

Hello!
Hi there!
How are you doing on this fine day
Not bad, looking forward to DMing tomorrow's session
oh hell yea, I'm also looking for a quick and free oneshot to test the game
I spent a weak reading the player's handbook and I'm kinda excited
Hm not sure about quick, good, and free.
Look for a local Adventures league at your nearby comic or game store
Its built for drop in play
well just one session or maybe 2
Did you check out #find-a-game yet?
yea, I did "find community", hope that was the right way to do it
i used the find a game server but i have 0 clue if mine actually went through cuz idk how to properly use discord :’)

Are you looking to join as a player or a DM?
read the channel
How could you punish players for purposefully killing off their characters?
I don't.
How much more powerful is a party with 4 players than 3 players, 5 players than 4 players etc.
I assuming the players are leaving the table?
How do you effectively nerf stat blocks to fit lower player count than campaign requirement
Every PC is an additional action in the action economy.
Nah idk, just not in the mood to play their current anymore
Here's a fun DnD newcomer tip: No one at a table should feel punished for playing a game
Don't punish players in-game.
If you have issue with a player, talk to them offline.
I put them in the void
Only because they just suck irl and they were very mean
Campaign requirements are quite loose, and can mostly be accommodated by DM strategy in combats.
Rebalancing a campaign based on the number of players is probably a better topic for #dm-discussion.
Hi friends, quick question, I'm building my first DND character and am wondering with Rangers, how quickly/soon can you get a companion pet? and can I pick a wolf?
Only certain subclasses get a "pet".
Beast Master is the best choice if you want a wolf.
At 3rd level, you gain a beast companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you.
theres a ranger subclass that gets a companion and you get your subclass at level 3
ah I see it in the rules, beast master archetype, ty!
There is a speciific subclass, Beast Master that gets a companion
Using the handbook version of the BM you pick any creature within certain power limits
Using the Tasha’s version (optional rules released a few years later), it gets a few statblock options can can be flavored however you want
Druid can also get a wild companion now
I mean, i'm assuming he's going to play 5e
That's just the normal find familiar rules though
Nope optional wild companion rules
Playing 5E ya, super comepelled to try druid but want to play an easier class for my first few campaigns 🙂
Yeah, druid can be quite complicated for first time
Lot of spell management
And shapshift forms
recommend fighter to start, maybe barb or rogue
If u want a taste of spellcasting, Ranger
Wild Companion just lets you cast Find Familiar.
If you really the companion wolf, go for ranger
I can use them to attack things right?
If you're beast master ranger, yes
Wolves are available at no cost in the Basic Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17062-wolf
I strongly recommend getting the supplement book Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, as it has a vasty improved version of Ranger and specifically beast master
But if you’re just starting out, the players handbook is fine
You may want to confirm with your DM that they'd allow those options before you make the purchase.
But talking to your DM while you build your ranger is advised either way.
i’ve never played dnd before and am looking for a group where should i start?
You don't want to pick the coast as your favored terrain and spend the whole campaign landlocked.
Welcome! #find-a-game can get you started.
thanks!
Under the normal rules of the game, very few subclasses actually let you gain a companion. Beast Master ranger, as people have suggested, is probably the best one, for what you are looking for, since it lets you train actual animals, and gives you specific rules for how to run them and what they can do. However, you must also keep in mind that there is a difference between what is allowed during character creation, and what is allowed while in game. During character creation, you typically need to follow the rules to a T, since that's the most fair starting point for everyone. While in game, the DM gets to dictate what is possible and how it would work, so if you want to go out into a forest and tame a wild animal, without it being part of your class abilities to do so, that may or may not be possible, depending on what your DM decides and what your roll on your dice, if they allow it
Would I have to go off on a side quest or something like that to do so once I hit level 3? or is it up to the DM?
If you want a companion that is not part of your subclass, the rules for that are 100% up to your DM
What's leveling like and how fast does one hit level 3? Are most games exp based?
Depends on the DM if they use XP or milestone methods.
Depends on dm
My campaign started 1.5 years ago with the PCs at level 5. They're only level 7 now and I don't expect them to be level 8 for a couple more months (realtime). The campaign is slated to go up to level 20, so they probably won't reach that for another 2.5 years at least.
I noticed on critical role they started campaign 3 at only level 3 ... does that essentially mean they gained 1 level per campaign?
(or slightly more I guess, 1.5 levels)
Not every campaign begins at level one.
No. They ended campaign 1 at level 20, and they ended campaign 2 at level 16ish I think?
They chose to start their new game at level 3 instead of level 1 because they are all expirienced players, and levels 1 and 2 are more like the tutorial. Most classes don't get their interesting/fun abilities until level 3
The dm has the liberty to choose what level the players start
Some short-lived ones start at level 20.
I like to start at level 2
For experienced players I have their characters start at least level 3.
One of my games I started players at 1 doing ghosts of salt marsh. My other game started at 4 and is level 9 after 4 months
Even for experience players i like to start them at lvl2 so they the feeling of the campaign through 1 or 2 sessions before being lvl3
That’s a time loop homebrew
The rhytm at which the dm lvl up the players is entirely up to them
Can you use the same characters through new campaigns (and just have level reset) or do most players just make a new character?
I've been dming my current game for almost 4 years, my players are at lvl16 now
Make a new character
When you finish a campaign, the story of those characters is concluded in general
Traditionally, people make new characters for each new campaign they play in, but this is not a rule
A new story begins, with completely new characters
Gotcha, I think it would be more fun to make new ones anyway and try different classes/routes etc
Thanks all for answering my dumb questions 😄
They aren't dumb! That's what this channel is for
There are no dumb questions
what's more common exp or milestone?
Milestone I think
What's your guys favorite class
Milestone is a lot easier: the DM has more control over the advancement and the party don't have to do yet another bit of maths.
I enjoy anything with spells
Playing sorc atm but I’ve played artificer in the past and I rlly liked it
I don’t recommend either for a new player tho
Especially not artificer
@fleet field oh yeah I picked druid for my first character but I'm doing a ton of research to make sure I play it well
Yeah nice
A trap with Druid is relying on wildshape too much
You only get two uses of it per long rest and there’s often a decent number more than two encounters per long rest
You can also do a lot more damage just with your spells
True but I've got a list of possible druid spells and cantrips with the levels you can use them
One thing to keep in mind that’s useful with wildshape is that while you can’t cast spells while wildshaped you can maintain concentration on them
You can also trigger spell effects like with call lightning
All good
I'm personally not a newcomer, but I'm looking to help my players build more beginner friendly builds, but at the same time balance the party. What are some good classes and subclasses for each main role in the party?
If you want to keep things straightforward for new players, try keep character creation to choices within the PHB
I run a youth camp and mainly stick to the PHB classes and subclasses. To help the spellcasters I give them cards with the spells I've pre-selected for them. Once they reach the end of the week I usually let them "discover" that they have access to other spells etc
Nice, thank you for your advice.
Do you all recommend buying the digital copies of books on dnd beyond or getting the hard cover versions?
Depends on your budget and needs.
Remember that with the digital books you don't actually own them but are leasing them. If D&D Beyond decides to pull them then you're out of luck.
I still have books from past editions.
Although you can print to PDF your DnDBeyond stuff for your own use.
That said, I own both the physical and digital 5E books because 1) I have the disposible income and 2) D&D Beyond is very convenient for me DMing virtually.
WotC does sell bundles of the physical and digital books in their store.
I only see playing D&D virtually don't really have any friends in my area that are interested
A DM would probably be sharing their digital books if they're using D&D Beyond for their virtual campaign.
Digital books are useful for both in person and online play
As someone who always plays away from home, at other peoples homes or in library rooms, I've never regretted buying everything digitally. Transporting a bunch of sourcebooks would be a pain for me
It has the added bonus of automatically updating any erratas that might be made post-print
I just bought the digital versions of the players guide and monster manual

Fear not, it is like that for everyone in the beginning
Just read the first 4 chapters on character creation and try making a character on dnd beyond
You don’t need to memorise everything just have a basic idea of how things work
You just need to start reading the Player's Handbook
As a player is all you really need for starting
gimme some examples of the basic ideas
As stated above, the first 4 chapters are a good introduction
The basic concepts of each section of a character sheet
Dice rolling
How combat works
Hello i have some questions about making custom weapons and balancing curses on them?
how do i create a character sheet?

Awesome thank you
Playing a halfling rogue for my first campaign, I'm excited 😄
Good luck
My friends and I want to do an online campaign, we are all newcomers. Where do we start?
We want to do it online as well, but idk what to use for that
There are a few VTT (Virtual Table Tops) to choose from...
Roll20 is free but quirky™, Foundry is excellent but costs money, owlbear rodeo is free and very intuitive but basic
If you intend to run combat as theatre-of-the-mind however, you don't even need a VTT, so simply using a discord voice channel will suffice
Would foundry allow us to add our own monsters and stuff?
Admittedly, I have never had the opportunity to use Foundry in an online game
I imagine it almost certainly has a way to make creature tokens and insert their stats
Foundry handles homebrew pretty well
My friends and I thought it’d be funny to add terraria bosses to our campaign
That sounds pretty fun, if you're not up to homebrewing them from scratch I'm sure a bit of googling will lead you to some that others have made, I imagine someone else must have tried it
Wait would we need someone to dm for us on foundry? Or is the dm already built in?
how in detail can you get with your characters background lol
Nah, you need a DM I'm afraid
There are TTRPG systems out there that don't have a DM, but D&D is not one of them
Ah I see
Would definitely recommend giving it your best shot, even if you've never been a player before. The hardcover adventure Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is a great adventure to cut your teeth on from what I've heard. It is specifically designed to be as intuitive for first-time DMs as possible
Where do I find this?
Is it on most of the sites already?
You could purchase it on D&D Beyond (website) where you will get a digital version you can access on most devices; or you could buy a physical copy at your local gamestore
I have ben seeing the people playing dnd online and I need to know how because it sound grate being able to find and connect with a tone of people who love dnd as much as I do

thank you and sorry
You're 100% alright, theres nothing to be sorry for
Its definitely worthwhile searching for games in multiple places at once, as finding a game can often be the most difficult part of playing D&D 🥲
Um idk if I am interrupting anything I just joined and very new to discord over all
nah, you can do it without knowing anyone. I can guarentee you most people out there looking to start an online game are doing it solo just like you
thanks for your help and i hope you have a grate week
If your in need of friends I could be of assistance
on god
I’m pretty experienced with dnd I’m not the most tech savvy with online stuff
I have a party of 6 including me, but we are all very new and we still need a dm
I’m hosting an in-person campaign in Vancouver for new players
I just so happen to be a DM
Starting on Saturday
Is that in Oklahoma
No
@keen bronze check dms, I can give you info about my group
Okay
How exactly are player characters made like can I create one before starting a game with someone or do I have to do it before we start playing that game?
It's best to have it done before, but in all honesty some dungeon masters are more specific on how they like to have their players make their characters, some are fine with you just making everything, and handing them a background on them, while others like to be present during the creation process to ensure fair play.
All just goes down to who you're playing with.
oh that is way simpler than I thought it was I thought there was a whole set of starting rules like how much points you can spend on everything and all that assuming there is points needed to be spent this is way more straightforward.
There are some things you need to know when it comes to stats, but there are plenty of methods on how to do it.
This is usually the area DMs like to be present for, as some players like to lie about the rolls to have OP characters.
Oh so it’s completely possible to have one character made, and then just go into games of that character and change the stats up for how the dungeon master prefers
The most popular method is using rolls, so roll 4d6, and take the highest numbers, add them up, and do that 6 times, then just sort where you want the various stats.
Keep in mind, this varies with party to party
And it's the bare minimum, easiest method is just use the DnD Beyond Character Creator.
I don’t exactly know what the 4d6 means
4d6 - Four 6-sided dice.
So is that just 4 dice that are six sided? Or one six sided dice that rolled a four
Honestly, that sounds fair, but always talk to the DM about how they like to manage it, especially if anything homebrew comes into play.
4 dice that are six sided.
Oh ok
A lot of beginners only have 1 set of each type to start, so if that's the case for you, just write the numbers down as you roll them.
But roll the dice 4 times.
I'm probably over-explaining.
Making it more complicated
I am completely new to this I vividly remember when I was seven years old playing with my parents and not understanding what’s going on
You’re not over explaining you’re actually somewhat explaining it better than tutorials I looked at
Like I said earlier, you'll find the most ease doing this by using a site guide, like DnD beyond, it keeps things straightforward.
Yours is kind of straightforward
Fair
Alright, so I'm just going to explain this under the assumption you have one set of each type of dice, alright?
Anytime you see something like 4d6, or 2d12.
the first number is referring to the number of dice, or the number of times a dice need be rolled.
The second number tells you which dice to roll.
Got any other questions?
Is homebrew sort of like creating your class
Homebrew is a term used to describe anything made by other people, so that could be a class, a race, or any number of spells or traits.
Homebrew just means custom made esentially.
Oh all right is homebrew typically used in matches
It’s used frequently by many groups but don’t expect it to be allowed at every table.
Homebrew is something that can just be used in any game whatso ever, however again, some DMs don't like Homebrew, and it is something you always talk to the DM about before bringing in.
Best to plan on playing by the core rules.
Eh, not really.
Most D&D games require dice although their is an official variant rule to use the average damage instead of rolling it.
More like Critical fails, or Critical successes, DMs usually have different rules for what happens, though they can usually be boiled down to similar results.
Oh
Someone suggested I play DND because I can create very interesting characters. I usually go all out with it, but just have a very simple concept for the start.
That's honestly a great way to go about it, start simple, and work your way up.
But make a character you feel you can connect to.
And don't be afraid to have fun with it.
Sort of like one of my characters Drucker there, a character who is addicted to beer and I have a bunch of different stuff about their personality
lol, well, I can give you an example of a character I made awhile back.
I would send pictures of their character page I made (not dnd) but I can’t send pictures
They’re honestly kind of brutal
But if I did send the character page, you would see how bad I am at writing I’m getting a little better, but my writing honestly sucks very inconsistent and miss. spelling words
I made a Prince, whos family was killed in a coup, and while he escaped, he lost his arm, so a few years later, after studying artifice, he made for himself a prostetic, and began research into the form of magic known to Warloks, all so he could gain power even if it cost the lives of others, so he could get revenge and retake his birthright.
This is more something I haven't actually used, but loved the concept for, and would in all honesty be a character more suited for an evil campaign, as the darker personality is more fitted to that ideal.
That has a lot more backstory than druker literally the only reason they attack anyone is if they took their booze literally, they just be sitting in the corner, drinking booze until something happened to their booze
You want a character to feel dynamic, with flaws, and traits that add personality.
The more you put into the character, the more you'll be able to connect to them.
I get having a simple character is a fun way so you can just play it by year, but you'll find that you'll grow more attached if you have an idea of who your character is, and what their history made them.
I have two other characters. One of them is comic Ronin, which is my profile picture.
And kind of the mascot of me
The other is poison, dart a retired military folk who spent their entire life training for the military, except for the first two years
Honestly, I think if I tried to go into a backstory with druker, it would just be normal kid experience life got drunk
It's all good, but when your making a character, you should ask yourself a few questions, and build your background up from there.
1: What happened in their younger days that set them on their path?
2: Why do they take the adventuring life style?
3: What do they aim towards, what is their goal, and what would satisfy them?
I am simplifying poison, dart and druker is not reallyC and who would have their backstory affect their current thing it’s just sort of something that happened sort of like you experienced life and you didn’t like it. You got sad and then you got drunk.
Fair enough, just something to remember if you feel like it moving forward.
Each person makes their own characters in a way that suits them
Any other questions though that I can help you with?
I’m make my characters like how I draw simple
Not right now
Oh wait sorry I just thought of something. Do you think it’s easier to create a world on the go or just create the world and then let the players go through
Oh, world building? That my friend is a whole other beast.
If you're new, it's best to go off of something pre-existing, like a Module, or campaign book, expand as you go. When you get more experienced, creating something more unique can be a fun, but still challenging exercise.
Oh I guess that makes sense
I’ve always been told that the pre-built worlds are better, but I don’t really want to go to the hassle of buying one I want to get to this game for free just in case I don’t end up liking it
There’s a couple free campaigns
You can get some aspects for free.
Frozen sick is a free module
It's a good way to ease yourself into it.
The basic rules are also free
Though not necessary, I always recommend playing with a more experienced DM first, even if DMing is what you plan to do at the end.
There are a lot of rules that you learn over time, and playing with someone who knows them already can make the experience more enjoyable for the whole party.
All right
Yeah it can be useful to play before dming
Oh, I thought it was something that you could just start as lol
And just after a couple matches, you’ll learn
Also, is it completely possible to do this all online?
You can, but those first sessions will be very slow, and you may get discouraged, it can be complicated if you aren't sure what needs to happen in situations.
Yes, it totally is.
I've been running a campaign online for the last year, there are lots of sites you can use for it, such as Roll20 for a game board, just watch youtube tutorials for how to use it.
And again DnD Beyond is a great way to manage encounters, characters, and even the Campaign itself.
Is it completely possible to play with the same people on the same world set just the players play with different characters
I thought you would have the chance to be like replaying playing a game where there is a couple of different things you could do but overall you’re kind of just doing the same thing
The world is created and run by a DM, so its up to them. But this isnt a video game with a save point or fixed levels/stages to play thru necessarily
Yeah, I know that but I was sort of thinking if the players realize they were playing in the exact same world they’d already played if they would just do what they know is the best thing to do
Ah, that's what you meant.
Thats something a DM would have to do
Well they might be in the same world but what’s happening would be different
Well, if you set the players back in time, than yeah, they'll know what's going on, but say for example you're playing and all the players die. They want to continue the game, but there's no direct way they'd learn all the same information.
You could maybe have them find the bodies, and find some diary that explains the journey up to that point, or perhaps they come across some info from an NPC along the way.
If it's a new story altogether, being in the same world isn't as much an issue, you just have to consider where in the time frame things are happening, and try to avoid any overlaps.
Oh, so the dungeon master will have to change things up
Exactly.
Like creating a new cave that wasn’t there
Maybe, just try to avoid retcons
Well they can change what’s happening in the world
Kinda like Undertale fun values where each time do you play the game a different event happens, then changes it up
The world may be the same but what’s going on in that world is different
Also, sometimes stuff look a little weird that’s because I am using the Apple voice to text because I suck at spelling
Ah okay fair
That is not because I talk weird it’s because Apple voice to text is not the greatest
Dw about it mate, do what you got to do.
Yeah understandable
But I think it is so far get a little bit about character creation. I don’t get how each world is built it self, nor how to create monsters and all that.
And yes, I know that it’s best to start with already created worlds
So, while you're new, try to avoid creating creatures and the such, it can just over complicate, it's best to use the numerous available sources, as they're listed with challenge ratings that can help a DM to judge the difficulty that a party might face against them.
This is one reason why playing with an experienced DM can be a life saver, elements like this are hard to learn off the bat, and seeing how it's done first hand, is better than any advice you can get from discord chats like this.
Ask while you play if possible, the game feels complicated, but simplifies while you play it.
Oh all right but I was sort of thinking outside of a game asking a DM about how to build a world
And all that
Well, this area here is filled with experienced DMs, but they all got to where they are by learning as they play, experience is the best teacher after all.
We can answer any question to the best of our knowledge, but the best way to learn, is to play.
Right
Right, I'm hopping off, if you have more questions, feel free to ask them, I'm sure others will be able to help answer any other questions.
Like I said, I use voice to text on Apple which is why I said rat first before i changed it to right
I felt like I was a little mean when that happened
No need to appologise, I figured that was the case.
All right
hey y’all! i am a new adventurer in the beautiful world of dnd and i was wondering how i can join a beginner campaign?

Hello!
Hello. I don't know if this is the right place to post. If it's not, please correct me to the right channel.
Hi. I'm Sebastian. I used to play old schools DND. And I haven't played much since 3.5. I did try some 5e and it was rly fun. But unfortunately it didn't go to plan when I had to play a other persons character. It was just a little bit hard to find my own place, taking over a character somebody else used to play.
I'm looking to play with my own character. And I do have the fundamental ruleset Down. But I'm still new to 5e. Please contact me if you would like a new player in your campaign.

i need help
What with?
i dont know how to get started
like i want to find someone to verbally explain this to me
i dont know ANYTHING but i really want to learn
Well you're going to struggle with that here as this is a text only server
I would recommend giving the basic rules a read: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
You don't need to read all the basic rules, I'd suggest just the chapters on character creation, using ability scores, and combat
is there a place i can post asking for someone to verbally explain it to me? i cant retain information from reading
There’s handbook helper
whats that?
It’s a video series explaining the basics
D&D is a game that involves a lot of reading, so I'd say at least trying to give the rules a read first would be worth it
Even once someone explains the game to you, you're still going to need to read your class abilities, spells if you take a spellcaster, look up rules yourself etc
i guess what im struggling with is the vastness of it all, i can read in the sense of like learning something like that about a character. i just feel like somone walking me through it would be very beneficial
D&D looks big, but it's really just a bunch of small bundles of rules
Take it one step at a time
Like the basics of D&D are describe what your character does or wants to do, and then your DM will ask you for a roll using one of six abilities if there's a challenge, otherwise your character does what you describe
Everything else is built off of that basic concept
do you think watching others play would be good?
like i know there are d&d youtube pages
It can be, however it's important that almost no two tables are alike
right right
How I run my game is very different from how say Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan run theirs (they're youtube/twich D&D DMs)
Brennan is so funny! and from what ive seen a very good DM, keeps it exciting and very deep
If you are trying to learn the game, you'll probably get more out of a lower budget live play than dimension 20 or critical roll. Both of them have huge production teams and it can create an unrealistic expectation.
Also from what I understand those shows were created as entertainment foremost
Dimension twenty and critcal roll both have a professional improv cast with 2 of the most universally loved television dms
Your first game will not be either
Me to I want to join a beginner capainge to
Im also new, and i could run the campaign Lost Mines Of Phandelver
It probablt wont be very good, but i can certainly try
If you two are interested, you can dm me
Set up a #looking-for-players ad then
Does anyone know which books I should get (I have player handbook dm guide and monster manual
You have all that you need to get going! You might later want to pick up Xanathars and Tasha's. You might also want to pick up a campaign book if you are thinking of DMing
Thanks

This should help you get started :)
Reading the basic rules are usually the way to go as they help you to understand how the fundamentals of the game work and after that it's only about finding a game really. DM's will usually try and explain things along the way if there are any questions :)
I see but,
I assume i need to get special like d5,d15 and d20
If you want to play in person with physical dice, a standard set will be d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and of course the iconic d20
Usually these can be bought as a set.
You can also use dice rolling programs. My group plays on a Virtual Table Top, so the dice are in the program, but sometimes we like to roll physical dice for luck 😄
I see i see
I assume that there a set amount of races in DnD
I see druid,goblins etc before
Cause i wanna create a chatacter
Dont worry my character im making is a human mage
I dare not touch the advanced ones-
Indeed there are! You can find the complete list here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
For your first character, it's generally advisable to stick to the first section, the "Player Handbook races". Your DM, when you find one, is unlikely to object to any of those, whereas if you are asking for one of the races further down the page, they might not fit with the DM's setting.
Human is a great choice.
D&D doesn't actually have a class called "mage", strangely. Or it's sometimes used as a broader description of several classes like Wizard, Warlock and Sorcerer.
Witch it is then XD
Is it ok i ask if my character here is too
Idk op? Cause sometimes i have difficulty well balancing things
Im mostly i think joining online session cause where im from dnd isnt popular at all
Wizard and Sorcerer are the purest arcane spellcasters. Wizards are straightforward "I get lots of spells and lots of opportunities to use them". You can do things like learn spells from other books and spell scrolls. They have to choose which spells to prepare for the day, so won't have access to all of their spells all the time. They are themed around studying magic.
Sorcerers are naturally magical beings. They get fewer spells, but have access to all of their spells at once. They have the ability to tweak their spells: making them stronger, hit more targets, cast stealthily etc.
Wizard would suit my character more then since she is human?
You can be a human sorcerer, no problem. But if wizard speaks to you more, then that's a fine choice too.
i like restraint and strategy
so wizard would be better for me because i do not want to have a lot of spells in one go
Check out the class page for Wizards, and particularly the "Quick Build" section https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard
Well, the other option is Warlock, which is themed around a pact with a higher being, like selling your soul to a devil. Warlocks are unusual because they have the fewest opportunities to cast their best spells, but those spells really go off with a big bang. Instead, they rely more on powerful cantrips, which are weaker spells that can be cast again and again.
...call me out for it
but is it weird that if i wish to make my chara touch on magic, through tarot cards?
god i feel so bad asking so much TwT
Heck no, the sorcerer in my game does exactly the same thing! Spellcasters often have a spellcasting focus, which they will use to cast spells that otherwise would require a material component (it gets more complex than that, but we can gloss over that for now). In the book, this is suggested as a wand, orb, crystal...but you can totally ask your DM if it could be a Tarot Decck
oh ya, are they any locations in dnd that i have to take notice for especially for wizards?
so basically im thinking of handicapping my oc twice
so one her body is very weak so physical and running is not her strong suit at all
Bit of advice
Look at how characters are made in D&D before getting set on a character idea
You'll need to find a DM first. The DM will be running a campaign which is set in a world. That world could be the main D&D setting, the Forgotten Realms, which you might have seen in the recent movies. It could be one of the other official settings, like Greyhawk or Eberron. Or it could be something they have made themselves. Locations will be specific.
It's not always possible to make a concept work in D&D
i see i see
No, this is just called reflavouring. Taking an item that exists, and using it exactly how the rules require it to be used, but instead, calling it something else and describing it a little differently.
😮
👆 As long as you still follow the rules mechanically, it often doesn't matter how you describe it
There's an ice cream monster and we're gonna go lick it!
yes i always been a fan of dnd but i never commit to it until now -
makes me realize how dumb i look-
These are all really sensible questions for a new player to be asking, and we were all there at some point.
Questions about the setting are particularly common. It's sensible to assume that if you come to D&D, there will be "the D&D world". It can be a surprise to learn that there are in fact multiple worlds, one of which is more prominent than the others, and even then many players are writing their own worlds.
i think what makes it worst for my case is that
DnD in my area is not known so no one knows how to play it
i only learnt about this game like with videos on youtube and was like '...Oh my, there this game? " and i just jump down the rabbit hole so now im here-
I mean LEGIT MY FIRST THOUGHt-
i think thats why it feels so intimidating for me as a newbie to join cause these videos show how good they are and im like HUH?
The reality is going to be a lot easier to keep along with! Most videos are going to show groups that are already so experienced that they think that they are worth watching.
Why is it only letting me chat in here. I read all the rules?
A much more realistic session is depicted here, and features new players.
Don't watch too far though, they are playing through one of the starter sets campaigns, and you might end up playing it yourself! The first couple of hours should be safe enough https://youtu.be/hgNRe76o4_8

Would it br better to lewrn the rules while I play
It's definitely easier. I do recommend at least having a go at making a character yourself following the rules and guides (Doesn't have to be the one you actually use, it's just to get used to where to put things), and having a glance at the combat rules.
This just speeds things up when you play and so you go 'Ooh okay. So roll initiative now... right, and now it's my turn and.. I can do these things- oh, right, right, I remember something about the attack roll vs their AC.." and so on.
heya, literally just learnt about this game about 4 hours ago and joined the server. Are all campaigns that are done through discord in voice chat? Are there any beginner friendly like written word campaigns around?
Welcome! There's all sorts of campaigns being run, so if you're willing to put the effort into looking for a specific kind of game, you're bound to find it eventually! Many games are online via voice chat, but there's also text based campaigns run on occasion.
Ooh alright, thank you!

Ooh tysm!
The term for text-based games is play-by-post (or PBP). Besides searching the channels here for either term, check out sites like Role Gate, RPG Crossing, Gamers Plane, and Reddit's r/pbp.
PBP can be a lot of fun. It's usually a lot slower than playing in person, but it's a good way to work around a busy schedule.
Combat can take a long while if one of your members is super busy at work all day 😅
hey just joined this server
i bought the DnD essentials kit and my friends wants me to be DM 😅 dont have a idea how it works and where to start in the adventure book
like it so much information in the books
You should learn the rules enough to feel confident getting started. You can either read the Essentials Kit rulebook or watch some videos (like Handbooker Helper) on YouTube.
Then read the adventure to understand what it contains and how the pieces fit together. There are also good videos for how to run a published adventure generally as well as that specific adventure.

How i play/ find people to play with
Check out #find-a-game
when a monster sheet or character sheet has "+7 to hit" on their weapon section what does it means or how do i read it?
it means th eir attack modifier is +7
so if you roll a d20 add 7
then compare it to the targets armor class
cool
if me and my buddy are trying to find a one shot so we can lear to play the game how would we find a dm or a group?
#looking-for-players or you looking for an IRL game
online would be preferred i appriciate it bud
We’ll have a look I. That channel and respond in the threads under the ads if you find something
The tabletop
Tabletop RPG
Yes, because here are more players than DMs.
So any openings get filled up very quickly. Keep looking.
ehh its kinda hard yknow, i looked through LFG, twitch and in discord and yet cannot find a single one even when i tried to tlak with my friends there uninterested
Have you explored local options
Facebook and Meetup have local groups. There's also your local hobby shops.
theres no hobbyshops in alberta i can find unfortunately im a kid and when i looked thru facebook they keep ghosting me!
Don't give up and keep looking.
yep i shall try
If there is a college or uni in the area there is usually a D&D group
Finding a good D&D group like dating. There will be drama, ghosting, and such before you find "the one."
my moms in college i might ask her if she knows anybody
yet its been like what 1 year since ive been finding
I’m new wats up
Hi
Ello
Is any new player in the Vancouver area?
I’m running a beginner’s campaign on Saturday in Vancouver
Might want to specify what Vancouver you're speaking of.
And also as noted by OldManYellingAtClouds, please use the appropriate channels to advertise your game (see #find-a-game for instructions on how to use those channels).
There is also are a couple of Vancouver D&D Facebook pages (I'm in them). You can also post on Meetup (there are local D&D groups)
If you want to expand your search, there's a bunch of options on this list: #third-party-tools-archive message
one of the dnd games i was aboutta join banned me cause i was gonna get a mic
or headphones
Not a typically expected response
Should i learn while i play
Hello all 😊
That’s one way to do it, sure. There’s no right or wrong way.
Though I’d generally recommend having some idea of the basics before playing.
Sooo much reading

I have a question, where could I go for character advice in this server?
Would that help me?
#character-discussion for more advanced stuff or here for basic questions
It’s generally helpful advice, yes, and the rules there do cover character creation.
But #character-discussion can help as well.
Thanks so much 😊
Hello, I’ve just joined and want to know how to play dnd. Can someone advise me please?

@foggy hornet @shadow kraken the above links have some useful info, I would start by reading the first four chapters of the basic rules on character creation
Great thank you! I clicked on a link and done a little demo 🙂
how do i do my ability socres I havent dont this in a long time
You can read the basic rules on character creation which should walk you through that
thx
I suggest taking standard array unless you have a group to play with already and they've indicated a different way to generate stats (like dice rolling which is 4d6, drop lowest die - and do that 6 times for the 6 stats).
There’s three official ways to calculate your scores. Which one you should use is a question you should ask your DM.
Those are all described here, though.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Hello! Bit new here, I don't expect to join a game right now or in near time. But when I do, with what kind of information should I approach a DM? Should I have a character ready?
I would suggest having a few loose ideas for characters.
Then you can work with your DM to pick the best fit for that campaign and add any finishing touches.
Personally, I like building a character that fits with the theme of the campaign (which is hard to do before knowing what the theme is).
If you can also have some sense of what you want out of the game—what things you like, what you don't, your style—that can help you ensure it's a good fit in both directions.
Got it! Thank you
Definitely. Making sure everyone’s on the same page up front can help avoid potential unpleasantries down the road.
If you live in Vancouver Canada I have a campaign for all your teaching needs
so if i roll and my points equal 41 then those are what I get ot put into my ability scores?
I used an ability score roller
No
If you’re using Point Buy, you have 27 points to allocate using the point buy table.
ok
If you’re rolling, you roll 4d6 and keep the highest three for each individual score.
You don’t add the scores together.
it doesnt have to be
usually all the numbers are rolled at once
and then you can assign them individually
i mean if you chose your class and had a whole idea about it and then ended up having a 13 str as a fighter that wouldn't be great now would it
yeaaah
Making a character without a DM/game is essentially practice. Not everyone uses rolling for stats, and some do it differently (reroll 1's, rolling them in order matters, etc.).
ahhhh so I should find a DM first
You can make a character, just don't expect to use it as is.
☝️ Especially if you’re rolling for your ability scores. 😅
ahhhhhh ok
Most DMs like to see the rolls in person.
well then I should find a group to be with first then XD
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d suggest using the standard array for your ability scores.
Then if your DM wants you to roll, you can do that later.
Come up with character ideas, try making a character to understand the process, and yes, find a group.
I played once but a long time ago
trying tog et back into it
I kinda got into the games and thats what brought me back XD
I remember playing a very very pseudo version of the game back in highschool with some friends and it was very fun
Just bought the dnd essentials bundle and a players handbook I’m new to dnd anything else I may need?
Dice are nice, but you don't need them.
I bought so many things back in middle school.. but never had friends to play with. I had the Dragonlance box, Forgotten Realms box, Ravenloft box, Spelljammer, Council of Wyrms, Birthright.. wish I still had all of those.
Ay yo dnd camp sounds rad
Know what kind of character you want to play?
Ayy alright sounds like you are all set
Hi, what are the main platforms that people use for games?
Uh do you mean in general or are you trying to play onlineb
A lot of people sit around in person at a table and play
Its significantly more fun with paper character sheets, physical dice, and no screens
To be fair it can be hard to find a good table that is also near your living quarters and also accessable and also you can meet up on a consistent schedule. I don't know why I said accesable and near your living quarters they mean the same thing.
Generally r20 for if the DM is free to play, or FoundryVTT if the spent money on the service, Both are free for players still so check out their forums to see if you want a game on a specific platform
I highly doubt this is the only dnd general chat section
there are 37k ppl online right now
yet we can go entire minutes without messages
For what?
Thanks
Where can I find places to play irl
That's the hard part
Look on yelp, facebook, warhorn, meetup, or search for local comic or game stores
Schools, libraries
There’s a good article here that covers some popular options for playing online.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
There’s an official organized play system called Adventurer’s League
Chapters run locally

Perhaps ask in #1029833015423143957 to avoid spoilers? Or in #dm-discussion for general DMing advice.
Hii I’m a huge newbie, never even played or watched a game before, and I wanted to know if anyone had a good online group recommendation that could help me out with playing n such? :D
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
Not at all 😂 Is it on here?

Thank you! Should I watch Critical Role’s series? I’ve heard of them and seen fanart but never watched them, would it help out?
That's up to you. It's entertainment and doesn't really represent how a real game would be played (the cast are all professional actors by trade).
Matt Mercer is also a voice actor and a veteran DM. So don't expect your first game to be as polished as theirs.
Ah I see, thank you so much!
Read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos and if you have any questions come back here to ask. There are plenty of people who can help you out.
Will do!
i started a feminine male high elf warlock, how do i choose a secondary class?
that is multiclassing
you need at least 13 in one or two certains stats(depending on the class) to multiclass into or out of another class
you will gain 1 level of that class, and class levels are completely seperate except for proficiency bonus
im completely new to dnd and dont understand any of what you said
cause i have 14 in str
ok so on your character sheet, you have numbers
yes
anything else 13 or above
ohhhh subclass
you can pick whatever you want for those, but i think warlock calls those patrons
yeah but how do i get a subclass or "patron"
are you using dndbeyond's character builder
yes
ok go into the character builder, go to class, then you will see Class Features
there will be a glowing blue box called Otherworldy Patron
click that, and you can see your patron choices(there is one free patron)
oooooh okie
yeah its the fiend
can i send you my character sheet so you can go over it?
and see if i did ok
Did you make the character on dndbeyond? You can link it here
Uh I don't really know how to start this but uh, I'm completely new to dnd and I have no clue what to do. (Also I'm starting the school day soon so I might not respond, if I don't, fear not, I will somewhere at 3:00pm UK time)
(Ps if you saw this twice its because I accidentally posed it somewhere else)

Hello hello
hi
hello
@tardy karma welcome, this is the newcomer chat for people new to D&D
Thank you! ^-^
np!
Hello 👋🏻 I joined early hours this morning but just wanna say hi! I’m hoping to get started on the character sheet and such today so I may be popping in here for any help if that’s okay!
Where can I find info on sublasess
Hey! I’m UK time too! Maybe we can help each other out!
That's what the channel's here for!
oh nice!
The available subclasses are listed inside of each class.
(There are also additional subclasses found in other books.)
But generally, you unlock your subclass somewhere between levels 1-3.
And then it grants you additional features at certain higher levels.
They're essentially your specialization within the class.
Hey new here how does everyone find groups to play, still learning the game but want to try beyond what I am currently doing
Welcome! #find-a-game can get you started there.
Thanks it is very confuing haha
lol
Short answer, then: if you're looking to join as a player, I'd start by browsing through the games posted in #looking-for-players and replying to any you're interested in.
I'm just wondering, would it be beneficial to watch a game session before participation to understand the game better? if so would watching like youtube or twitch help?
It can help, but it's far from necessary, for a few reasons
- Your average game session won't cover all, or even most, of the rules, even the basics
- Every table is different and approaches things in different ways
- A lot of tables use house rules and that can confuse things
what would you reccomend?
I don't have any recommendations for learning about the game tbh
oki no worries
But recommendations that I personally enjoy?
- Critical Role campaign 2
- Dungeons & Dragon Queens
- Exandria Unlimited: Calamity
- Harmonquest (not D&D, but very D&D like)
https://youtu.be/MNcpxqT_WsM give this one a try there is only 3 players so it’s not to hectic
You will probably be fine reading and watching explainer videos, but if you want to see some 'real play' that is entirely by-the-book, and features beginner explanation of the rules, the publishers put out a video of their staff playing the original Starter Set campaign, Lost mine of Phandelver.
THe only downside of this video is that you might want to play that campaign yourself, so perhaps don't get too far into it! You'll get the basics from the first parts anyway.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgNRe76o4_8&ab_channel=Dungeons%26Dragons
okay thanks! I've been watching the Handbooker helper yt series to understand better as i like to see the explanation visualised compared to just reading. I'll have a look thank you!
Thanks I will see what I can find... figuring out the time zones is a challenge
Hey everyone!
hey Samson, how you doing? 🙂
Ahhh I can't complain just started the weekend 🥳 how about you?
I'm good thank you for asking, just chilling at the PC for now
do you have any experience with DND?
I have RPd a lot in different mediums, I've never done full on D&D before but been wanting to for a while now. How about you?
i have zero experience haha, i'm hoping to learn though, hence why i joined this server 🙂
What is a good choice for a deity for a dragon born paladin
Bahamut, the platinum dragon, god of justice
Which Oath are you thinking of?
What is an oath?
Its the paladin's subclasses
Ohh
Yeah I hav no clue about that
I guess my oath wud be to protect everyone around me like in my party at all costs
What do gods do btw?
Like in a few words
Which gods even exist is going to depend on your campaign setting.
It depends on the setting and the DM.
As are their specific roles within that setting.
So that's probably a question best discussed with your DM.
Ahh I see
^ What Spam said. I run Forgotten Realms, which does have an established pantheon, but the gods are distant in my games. So it’s highly dependent.
I would recommend having a loose idea of what you're looking for, though.
