The Serpent’s Lands

The Serpent’s Lands / Serpent’s Landing is a small settlement where the Serpentine Tributaries join the larger Serpentine River. The whole region is one of slow rolling hills with marshy lowlands between them which are home to meandering streams and rivers that work their way south eventually spilling out into Black Sphinx Bay.

Serpent’s Landing takes advantage of the stonework left behind by the elves in the region – most of the structures incorporate elven stonework and on the north side of the landing, many are built up on “foundations” of a grass-covered fallen elven citadel which was once set to guard this particular area. Other elven ruins can be found in the forests with a bit of digging, and there are ancient stairs in a few places that make climbing the hills a bit more convenient.

Finally, there is the “Kalen Path” – a road so old that it had fallen to ruin before the war with the elves. The remnants of this road can still be found in the forests where trees generally refuse to grow. While much of the stonework is ruined or overgrown with grasses, the route is easy to find as it angles up along the south side of Serpent’s Landing and then veers north. The old road is much more clearly visible to elves, and some of the old stonework seems to glow for them at night, guiding explorers north towards…

Today’s map was an experiment working with a real-world water system and then building up a settlement and game environment around it. In this case, I also kept the cuts through the forest that Quebec Hydro makes for their transmission lines and turned them into the old elven highway. I chose these rivers specifically because I love meandering rivers with oxbows… It is also an experiment with a bit more colour and working at a smaller scale. The map itself is 8.5 inches tall by 14 inches wide, designed to be printed on US Legal sized paper. It was drawn based on the Ruisseau Serpent in Quebec and has a rough scale of 1 hex = 100 yards.

yes this is VERY useful for combat, the blade design is a direct call back to the great German Zweihander, now! you can't really do murder strokes but you can half sword

this blade is VERY much usable

shoot! it looks down right great! like a mix of a bastard sword and zweihander, the shorter blade would be best for stability and for a sturdy and lethal blows at closer range

Tomb of Namotos the Flawless

Someone has found the location of the ancient tomb of one of the early emperors of Zorisz – Namotos the Flawless. This tomb predates the massive tomb structures of ancient Zorisz and is not built into one of the immense landmark pyramidal tomb structures of the late empire. The tomb was cut into the side of a valley, expanding on an existing cave that had been used by prehistoric Zorites for the quiet burial of their priests. These ancient crypts remain at the very back of Namotos’ tomb, although the ancient priests here were replaced with wax-sealed sarcophagi containing effigies of the elder priests.

Like many valleys in the region, the tomb valley resists scrying attempts – thus the team that found this tomb had to do it by exploring every nook and cranny and searching for sealed construction or secret doors. When they did finally find the entrance to the tomb, it was sealed by a massive stone plug that was then pulled away to get at the contents. Servants and porters of that party have returned to town with stories of the plug being moved and the ancient tomb discovered with a number of nearly-as-ancient grave robbers dead within.

The party that opened the tomb came seeking one thing, and supposedly they found it and departed – others say they died within the tomb and never emerged, and yet others that they did leave the tomb only to be struck down by Namotos’ curse shortly thereafter.

But no matter which of those stories you hear, the fact is that every imperial Zorite tomb discovered and sacked in the last few hundred years has been rich in treasures of gold, gems, and secret texts of communions with the ever-living gods of the empire.

It is time to get an expedition together and see what those who found the tomb left behind!

To use this with a VTT you need to resize the squares to either 70 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 140 pixels (for 10′ squares) – so resizing it to either 2,940 pixels wide or 5,880 pixels wide, respectively.

Getting deep into foundry now, this map is split in 4 with walls

and using a module called Multi Level Tokens

the players can go through doors, up and down stairs

and they can even see characters on other level's of the ship when it makes sense

and example of what players see

though players cannot see the white boxes

the players can go down into the hold just by jumping into the open hole down into the ship's hold

they can also go up and down stairs, into the captain's quarters and back out onto the main deck

Bought a 1" circle punch and pulled character/monster art into Token Stamp. Printed out a paper that had 30-40 tokens on it, punched them out, stuck them to the sticky side of the magnet, and put a epoxy sticker on top

So I've been working on a custom AR Lens for my character for the game i'm playing in for Jaspers Game Week!!

Dungeon of the Goblin Lotus

The goblin lotus is a vile mutation of the black lotus – like the “typical” black lotus flowers which grant strange dreams under the spell of sleep, the corpse-white goblin lotus brings nightmares and paralysis to those who breathe the sickly scent… and then tendrils reach out to consume the victim as they lay there unable to save themselves. The castellan of Basamy Keep keeps a small cavern of these horrid plants in the lowest dungeons of the keep where they are cultivated by a family with a hereditary lack of the sense of smell.

When removed from the plant proper, the flowers and scent still cause paralysis and horrendous nightmares and the castellan uses them in interrogating prisoners and to reinforce his heavy-handed rule of the locals. Some of the tribes of the regions where the goblin lotus originally comes from also use it for nightmarish vision quests and coming of age rituals in search of their demon priests.

Knowing that the garden is an obvious target for local insurrectionists as well as those who try to gain their use for their own ends, the castellan has several necrophidiae prowling the dungeons under the command of a shadow demon who takes particular pleasure in seeing the goblin lotus being misused.

The 1200 dpi version of the map was drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and is 9,600 pixels (32 squares) wide. To use this with a VTT you would need to resize the squares to either 70 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 140 pixels (for 10′ squares) – so resizing it to either 2,240 pixels wide or 4,480 pixels wide, respectively.

The Lost Reliquary

Ancient temples to dreaming gods that predate Great Zorisz can be found scattered around the hinterlands of the Principalities of Black Sphinx Bay. Forgotten in the jungles and swamps east of Khalefteg is this sturdy structure dedicated to a once-popular local toad-like goddess of leadership, rain, and nature.

The statue of the toad-goddess was torn out of the structure by explorers from Holy Zorisz during the heyday of the empire. The rest of the sturdy structure was left alone for the elements to take care of (seeing some irony in the rains washing away the temple as it is reclaimed by nature). What the explorers did not find at the time is a set of secret stairs leading down to the reliquary of the old temple.

But hunting through the once-secret codices of the Emerald Hawk society, an old map of the locations of the seven temples to the goddess Mara has been found, and it indicates the method to open the secret door into the reliquary beneath… and it appears that the Emerald Hawk society was unaware that they had this treasure map in their possession.

So now we set forth into the swamps and jungles to find this temple again, and to see what treasures prompted the crafting of a secret vault beneath it.

The 1200 dpi versions of the map were drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and are 17,100 pixels (57 squares) wide. To use this with a VTT you would need to resize the squares to either 70 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 140 pixels (for 10′ squares) – so resizing it to either 3,990 pixels wide or 7,980 pixels wide, respectively.

Friends, I just finished a new map, I decided to share with you right away, because why not?
I will also be glad if you find a place for it in your story. To make it easier, I'll also attach some simple ideas and a short description for inspiration:

You are shaking in the cart all day, you stopped feeling your seat 3 hours ago, and now you finally stop. You see a small customs post in front of you, which includes several guards on duty, a stable and a smuggling warehouse. A sturdy man in a helmet with a slight smell of alcohol asks you to prepare a wagon for inspection. You hear that someone unknown sneezed under your wagon. The customs officer hears it too.

** Additional ideas for your story:
**

• A forbidden item of a wealthy merchant was arrested at this customs office, he asked you to secretly steal a forbidden item from a warehouse.

• The heroes are trying to cross the border, but they were stopped at the customs, something important belonging to the adventurers is forbidden to be imported (and perhaps some of the characters look like a wanted criminal), the customs officers talk boorishly and extort a bribe, and your fists itch more and more.

• The adventurers agreed to work at the customs post as workers, a busy day awaits them: smugglers, punitive squads from a neighboring country, a raid by a group of goblins, and much more.

I'm a lil' late in echoing this sentiment, but I can't recommend enough keeping up the practice. Every artist started in a similar place as a beginner and they opted to take an art journey to learn and grow, and you absolutely can, too!

Aaaand you'll save so much money in the long run teaching yourself how to draw your characters. It takes work, but it's worth it, imo.

Yeah honestly, practice is the way to go to improve your art. Maybe watch some you tubers or whatever whose focus is art to get some tips here & there, some of my personal favorites being Mark Crilley (hope I spelt that right) and draw with Jazza. Some basic ones I know, but they helped me improve at least somewhat

Oh, and if you're looking for a little more structure with your learning -- because it can be so difficult to be self-taught with no real direction -- I'd recommend some of the lessons in DrawABox. They're free! https://drawabox.com/

It can be a little dense and repetitive, but it provided me with some direction and a foundation for understanding art fundamentals until I could start teaching myself as I grew.

Don't feel pressured to race through all the lessons or even complete them (I didn't!), but I can't recommend this enough for beginners -- or people looking to go back and un-learn bad art habits.

So all of my campaigns for the last 20 years have taken place in the same world state of the Forgotten Realms. There is a character that ties them all together, Hos Drifter an immortal Warforged who runs the cross campaign guild every party are members of, the framing device is Drifter Writing a Story.

So I figured I would make some art of the Warforged himself in his office, writing.

as you just draw and get experience you will inhabit what kind of art you want eventaully
