Clip studio has a gradient tool, so I clipped a layer to another that I drew those polygons on and I made a light blue to peach gradient and then took a soft air brush to brush in the other colors

I suggest starting just with simple pencil and paper to get the general feel of things. After that it’s more of finding the right tools for your needs so I’m hesitant to make any specific tool recommendations.

I actually used to take pictures of my sketches in my sketchbook and use an app on my phone to color them in.

Unfortunately the app I use is literally unfindable BUT as long as it's an app that allows Multiply layers you're golden.

From what I've searched yes, paint.net has both image importing & multiply layers which you can use to color in your sketchbook sketches digitally!

Using a multiply layer is as simple as creating a layer, setting the blend mode to Multiply, and then coloring in the photo of your sketch. If you don't know how to change the blending modes of layers in paint.net or how to get a picture of your sketchbook drawing into paint.net, I suggest finding a tutorial cuz I've never used that program specifically.

What the multiply layer does is it colors your photo without covering up the lineart of your sketch. I did this technique drawing a DnD character actually

So, you draw what you want on paper,

take a photo of it with your phone or other digital device,

Import it into paint.net (fancy word for 'put it into' usually these programs use the word Import so you wanna look for that in the program.)

Create a multiply layer above the picture of your drawing,

And then just color it in 👍 I will say multiply layers do make the colors look darker, so you should use brighter colors than you'd usually use and it'll look correct once you color it in. If you want to paint in with white, use an Overlay layer instead & adjust the opacity (fancy word for how see through it is, most programs have an opacity slider linked to the layer you've selected)

An app I used before I bought procreate was Autodesk Sketchbook and its base version is free. You can get a monthly subscription for more features but the free version. Does the trick for me.

Was going through my gallery and found my bf’s dnd character in the first campaign we did. That one fell apart cuz of boundaries being crossed but I kept all the pretty art I made from it.

Photo bashing is also a great way to just your ideas of something to have a visual form. It’s a skill in of itself so don’t be discouraged by the learning curve. I used it myself recently to visualize my groups possible BBEG or at least how I pictured it myself, it’s still rough but good to know I can use it as alt to sketching from nothing. Spoiler due to gore and severed body parts

Here's my question for all the DnD miniature designers and painters who use 3D printers: what are the pros and cons of using a printer for that subject?

I can't speak from experience per-se as I only just recently got my printer, but basically: 3d printers are difficult for miniature making because the sculpted details get lost in translation at really small sizes. I hear resin printers are much better for miniature making. Not saying that it's impossible with 3d printers, just that it does take some sculpting work still if you print it really small.

I'm slowly working on drawing all of my players' characters.

Here's my sister's Tiefling-Warlock: Dev

Shunned princess kept locked away so that the kingdom of Rootstead would never know that the king and queen gave birth to a Tiefling. They had bleached her skin and hair, they had ground her horns down to the skull, they had cut off her tail, and they kept her locked away in a tower under the rouse that she was very ill and needed constant care.

One day, dev had enough, she sent out a dark prayer, and a dark entity answered. The entity gifted her the power to escape and claim her freedom. While she was escaping, she grabbed the crowned jewel of the crooked kingdom, The Sickle of Rootstead, out of spite - her wicked and corrupt parents don't deserve to rule, nor do they honor the history of the kingdom and this Sickle.

When she escaped, her diety gave her one more gift, and restored her appearance to her natural tiefling look.

The kingdom has since sent out flyer and guards under false pretense - a tiefling (matching Dev's original appearance) broke into the castle, killed several guards, stole The Sickle of Rootstead, and kidnapped the bedridden princess - though they have no idea that her appearance no longer matches the description.

The other players dont know about her past. They believe that Dev is just a ruffian and a vagabond, who likes cheap dive-taverns and sticking it to the man. They have recently discovered her Sickle and are buying into the idea that Dev broke into the castle to steal the Sickle, though she adamantly denies the claim that she kidnapped the princess - the rest party has yet to put all the pieces together, and my syster is playing into the character and the mystery perfectly

Just personal preference: try to make it so that your character's "shtick" can be seen at a glance. If the character is crafty and artistic, incorporate things like a small tool belt or ink/paint stains somewhere on the clothing. Unless they are intentionally trying to hide something or mislead with their appearance.

First off, lovely rendering. The eye size seems perfectly fine but based on real ravens, might be a bit too forward. I would suggest duplicating image and liquify tool to maintain the whole piece to check but yeah, a real raven would have the edge of its eye be just behind the end of its “lip” as seen below
