how do i change my psionic spells from the aberrant mind sorcerer?
Currently you can't do that natively as the character sheet doesn't support dynamic spell switching in that way (this is something the team is aware of)
There are workarounds, including making a homebrew copy of the subclass and editing the spells in the copy when you need to
thanks! will do that
Anybody know if the race updates from Monsters of the Multiverse will override previous versions or if they will be available side by side?
We'll be following instruction from Wizards of the Coast on how to handle content. I am assured that they will make an announcement on that, then we'll take their lead on how to handle it.
<#dnd-discussion message>
is the deck of many things in dnd beyond?
yeah it is its a part of the dungeon masters guide i think
Yep, you need to own or have access to the dungeon masters guide to access it
gotcha, thanks for the help
So I have been shared tasha’s cauldron but can’t access artificer, anyone know why?
are you building the character in the campaign where content sharing is enabled?
How do I build a character in a campaign? I just press make new character
You should have been sent a campaign invite from your DM.
You gotta make the character with their join link.
Or you can make a character and then add them to the campaign later, but then you won't have the shared material until that character is added.
Hey quick question. Im making a race and i dont know what dice you use for slashing damage. Ive googled a lot of times but i cant get a straight answer
There is no 'dice for slashing damage'
This would also be a question better suited for #homebrew
oh. i just thought it was this chat because i need dnd beyond help
This channel is for getting help using the D&D Beyond tools and services, not help with D&D in general (including homebrewing)
Is there any way to apply right tool for the job for an armorer artificer correctly out of the box in ddb? So at 9 that feature makes it so your armor is split up into pieces and you can infuse each piece + you get two additional infusions as long as its on one of those pieces.
Thank you that was very helpful
Is there a channel for asking questions about creating homebrew items? or is this where i should ask?
#homebrew
If you can't see the channel, go to #880965682462875679 and select the maker role ✏️
thx got it
When I click the monster stat blocks in the Encounter builder my rolls keep whispering to me instead of being posted in the discord dnd channel we use. I notice my chars !import their chars. and that makes it use that channel. Is there some command I have to type that makes Avrae see me as dm and post the rolls in there? Also I have the Beyond20 plugin, in chrome set to not whisper. but it still does.
There are two things;
Firstly, you need to link your campaign with the !campaign command. If you have further questions on that command, I suggest asking in #ddb-avrae-help
Secondly, I would recommend disabling Beyond20 as the extension can interfere with the site and it's functionality
Oh, I use it because of foundry vtt
Okay Ill try disabling it and seeing if it helps. thank you. The campign is already linked when we started months ago
Regardless of why you use it, it can interfere with the correct functioning of the site
I found the issue, was a setting inside the encounter builder in the gamelog inside the builder there was a setting for dice rolls
Have the Jan subscriber perks been announced yet?
No, not yet
okay 🙂
If I preorder something, do I pay for it now or when it comes out on release day?
Your card will get charged at the moment of pre-order (aka now).
i'm making a subclass that gives spells that don't count against spells known for sorcerer. two spells for each spell level up to 5th. but for some reason when i try to make a test character for the subclass, it tries to make me choose one spell or the other instead of giving both. at first i thought it was because the spells were put together in the same spell feature, but when i separated them it still made me choose. any idea what i'm doing wrong?
Separating them was the right move. It's just that sometimes homebrew edits can take up to 15 minutes before they show up on the sheet.
Is that posted as a message anywhere in the homebrew maker? It seems like a common issue.
Yep
The sometimes is really sometimes, in general we're hoping for a five minute maximum, and they can show up sooner than that even.
I just meant that a message that says "It can sometimes take up to 15 minutes for changes to homebrew to appear."
Is buying backgrounds useful or is it something I can ignore
I know you can make a custom one
so if I do that. is buying backgrounds obsolete?
If you want to make a character with that background, or you want lots of options to choose from: yes.
A custom background lets you choose a background feature. Without purchasing additional backgrounds, you’ll have only the default background features available.
Alright.
So I can avoid backgrounds for now
And make one based from the books i own
hard copy
I am guessing buying individual stuff like the player's handbook spell bundle never goes on sale.
there are sales - and if there is a sale it will be announced on the site.
usually it's a % off type thing
Oh no - it's usually book-only.
ok ty
The individual purchases do get credited toward the purchase of the book, though.
oh
So if you buy a $2 background, the book gets $2 cheaper.
i see it is cheaper to buy the book than the individuals
Ultimately, yes.
This is a noob question, but…I’m coming up to the end of my subscription. Will it be automatically renewed? Or do I have to renew it myself?
It should automatically renew as long as your payment option is up to date/valid.
Thanks
I dont quite get why i get the "This homebrew Subclass does not have the necessary class features with the correct required levels." message. What are possible Triggers for this? Oh I see it is a known problem. Sorry for the double post
You haven't add a feature at each level the base class expects there to be a subclass feature
Well i do acutally and that is what confusing me. Or does D&D Beyond expect only to get only one feature per Capstone?
What class are you homebrewing?
Well i wanted to publish my Way of the Fighting Form i made on D&D Beyond
Yep
but i was able to figure it out
Perhaps it was because the display order wasnt filled out
This thread shows the expected levels per class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/23242-creating-subclasses-guide
If you have those and it's still complaining, you may need to hit the main Save button again to revalidate.
Of course, unless you're publishing it to the global community, you can just ignore those warnings entirely.
Hey there ... question about ?User Id Credentials for DDB. I'd like to switch from using Google Credentials to sign in to Apple but keep getting an error.
What kind of error?
@uneven lantern .. this one. It seems to take my Apple info setup, but trying to log back in with them I get ...
You’ll probably need to contact customer support for that one, then.
When you make a homebrew weapon can you change the base text that always shows up? I'm trying to make a cannon so I'm using the "pepperbox" as the base weapon. When I finish up the modifiers and everything on it and look at the weapon description it always pops up with the Pepperbox description above what I've created.
No, there’s not a way to change that.
Thanks, that's unfortunate
so i have a ranger playing in a campaign i'm running. they just hit level 3 and chose the beast master archetype. where on the character sheet do i find or add the beast they chose? or is that something that they will just have to roll separately for? like is there a spot where i can add the beast so that the attack and damage rolls are "clickable" for the rolls?
Extras
Thank You!! i never would have found that
so it gives them access to the stat block but they have to roll using the dice tray?
Idk what you mean by dice tray.
the little dice icon in the bottom left. they have to roll attack and damage with that as opposed to clicking on the attack roll button that you have for say the long bow
Right. Unless you use extensions that aren't endorsed by DnD Beyond and might cause the site to not work.
how do i change damage type or dice on a dice roll, like with toll the dead or absorb elements?
Make a copy of the spell and go into it's properties and change the dice
I deleted a named (and not yet started) encounter from the encouter-builder.
My monsters in the encounter are gone, but the encounter is still in my list.
Opening the encounter, gives me a "Making a Wisdom (Perception) check to find the encounter..." though.
It's not a caching problem, because the encounter is still in the list on another computer...
You’ll probably need to contact customer support, then.
http://dndbeyond.link/SubmitTicket
Be sure to select in the form that the issue is related to Encounter Builder, include your Username/Nickname and please include the Name(s) of the encounter and the URL(s).
I made a race that has ability score improvement but it dont show in the character builder. Is there something I can do to get it to load?
I'd suggest making a homebrew copy of an official race. Then you can dig in and see exactly how those were set up and compare notes.
Just be aware that homebrew edits can sometimes take up to 15 minutes before they show up on your sheet.
It's my understanding that Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse is actually just reprints and errata of existing content as such... Shouldnt there be more than just a few dollars discount or is it only a few dollers because I bought one of the bundles and that its full contents hasn't officially been released yet thus its not displaying discounts right
Hey I'm very new to Dnd as in never played, very excited to learn though. Could anyone explain to me how to find a beginner friendly game. Through this server or if I'm in the wrong place where to go.
You don't get discounts for owned content if its from another book afaik, so if you bought a spell from book A you wouldn't get a discount on the total price of book B even if it also contains the same spell.
I've had discounts like that before for tashas as an example as I owned blade singer from scag
@chrome crystal No, for two reasons
- D&D Beyond does not do cross-book credit for content shared between books (and never has). For example, buying Out of the Abyss (which contains several demon princes) will not give you a discount on Tomb of Foes (which also contains the same demon princes). Credit is only applied to the book for which you have purchased content
- Monsters of the Multiverse will not be replacing content you already own. The exact specifics on this have not been finalised, but the content of the book will not be a direct, one to one replacement
Interesting point you have put forward on #2... Especially as WotC have have talked about these being updates, especially on a one to one bases for a lot of the monster stats shared in their streams
That was the statement by Joe on the latest Dev update today
You can read a transcript here which also includes a link to the timestamp in the dev update
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/general-discussion/130483-hey-ddb-no-selling-m3-without-telling-us-whats-in?page=13#c255
I have a problem concerning character creation and content sharing
Ever since Van Ritchen's, it appears that I can't used Content shared stuff in creating characters
Things to check
- the DM is still sharing content
- you're making the character in the campaign with content sharing
- you can access the compendium versions
He is sharing the stuff
I am
I can read the books, if that is what you mean
And are you making the character within the campaign that content sharing is enabled on?
That's why
Yes that works. Thanks
You have to be making the character within the campaign that content is being shared
Got it
if you subscribe and make more than 6 characters, what happens to your characters when your subscription ends?
All your characters become locked. You can then unlock up to six
Subscribing again unlocks all your characters
Thanks for the transcript, though I'll bring you back to the bilge water debacle... Where the story of what was happening changed like 3 times
The story on that never changed, but that's wholly unrelated
It changed multiple times and as a result DDB officially appoligised for all the miscommunication surrounding the contents release and how long it was going to be around for. Because of that I'm a huge sceptic of announcements.
I don't think that ever changed. They said it was only going to be a limited time thing.
I think you're conflating a change in plans with a change in "story". Plans can change due to unforseen circumstances, but as it stands, what Joe has announced is the plan at this time
If anything changes, that will be communicated
Best place to stay up to date on that is the Dev updates on Thursdays
Hi my background is a Cloistered Scholar and it says I get "a borrowed book on the subject of your current study ". How do I interpret that?
Answered in #dnd-discussion ^
is there a way to "unpublish" my work
i created a race with 4 subraces and published my work when i realized i forgot a subrace entirely. I can create a new version of the parent race but that removes all of its prior subraces and i dont really feel like entering 3 subraces manually again. Is there a workaround for this? (i have no idea if this is the right place to ask) also ping me cause otherwise i wont see this
Published homebrew cannot be removed, because doing so would cause issues for any character sheets that might be using it.
Generally I strongly recommend against publishing - you shouldn't be looking at publishing until there has been playtesting, checks for typos, etc. You do not need to publish to use homebrew, nor share it to your friends (who you are in a campaign with).
we dont use dnd beyond to run our campaigns, infact im one of 3 that use it only for making characters, also that doesnt really help my current dilemma as i didnt know publishing something would softlock me into not being able to edit it.
you can edit it tho it just removes the subraces that already exist. i would see this as causing more problems than leaving them in
The Homebrew Rules & Guidelines explain this and are something to be read prior to publishing (that is why the system gives pop ups stating to read them prior to publishing). Unfortunately, once something is published it cannot be changed. For Races with sub races, editing the parent race delinks the sub races. Again, i'd strongly suggest to not publish future content in case you need to make changes.
hello i was just looking for some information about how d&d is played i have just started getting exited to play but i dont know if i need to buy anything, does anyone know a website where i could look for some information
thanks for the help
Site is having issues:
Did the dev update happen yesterday? I can't see it on YouTube
Ah thanks
just read the homebrew rules and guidelines. It says
Please note that once you have published a homebrew creation, it cannot be removed. Once published, the creation can only be updated via the “Create new version” option.
However no where in there does it say that updating a race will unlink all subraces. I checked it doesn't. So even if I had read the guidelines this wouldn't have prevented my issue. I wanted to submit it so i could get community feedback and use that for further creations / updates
And i cannot find anywhere in the "guidelines" where it says i should have play tested my creations before publishing.
I realize that my origional question was if i could get it unpublished, that was ONLY because I couldn't properly update my race without my subraces being unlinked. after reading the forums this has been an issue for a long time. you say that updating a race could cause issues with current character sheets using that race, but what happens if i do update it and just make 2 different subraces and forget the rest, i feel like that would cause more of an issue.
With regards to testing, this is covered by the following:
Please ensure that any public homebrew content you submit contains all of the correct modifiers. Missing modifiers may cause issues with values not appearing properly within the character sheet/character builder.
Please ensure all properties/abilities (such as spells and modifiers) are listed in the description, as this is the only field seen when people view the homebrew listings.
There is an expectation that all submitted homebrew content works and has been tested to verify it works. It must have the correct modifiers and descriptions to meet this criteria
As for your issue with it unlinking races, yes, you will have to publish the new base race and the new subraces. It unlinks because when you're publishing a new version, you might change the properties of the base race in such a way that it invalidates how the subraces work, causing issues.
images for monsters and races won't show up for me and this is what I get if I click "Open image in new tab."
That's often caused by bad caching. It's typically fixable by logging out, clearing your cache, and then logging back in
That does not specify play testing, that is only character creation testing. Maybe i realized that some stats need tweaking and need to change something but i wouldnt know this without community support. Regardless i digress, It would be easier to update a race and have the subraces stay linked. If i invalidate one subrace i just edit the subrace problem solved. More problems would arise if i were to just unlink all subraces if someone happened to use them,
What you call 'character creation testing' is what is typically referred to as play testing, it's simply semantics. The point stands that if you do not think something is finished, do not publish it. If you think it's finished, but later wish to edit it, that's what the create new version option is for
That system could result in a subrace fully breaking, which would in turn break someones character sheet if they used it. D&D Beyond has an obligation to ensuring that published homebrew content has the lowest possible chance of breaking someones character sheet. This is why making a new version of a race unlinks it from subraces, as a precaution.
what is the 11 for exactly?
That's your ability score
You're best off asking in #dnd-discussion as this channel is more for getting help using the D&D Beyond tools
But you can find more information here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores
character creation and playing are different, thats not really semantics as I dont really need to use a character that i have created to see if my homebrew is working like i said.
im unsure how that system would cause a subrace to break and would really like to hear how such a thing could hypothetically would happen. I do have one last hypothetical question however. Say i created a homebrew race with 4 subraces. several people used a few of the subraces. Now i go and update that race but my subraces get unlinked. What than happens to the character sheets that have old, unlinked subraces? i feel like that would break the system more.
Nothing happens because creating a new version does not affect the previous version people may already be using
That's how the versioning system works; you publish version 1.0 of something and decide you want to refine it. When you click 'Create new version', version 1.0 remains live while you have version TBC in your creations but unpublished
You make the changes and publish version 2.0. This does not change anything for people using version 1.0, it's still out there and is still accessible in the version history of version 2.0
However, when people search for your item in the homebrew listings, only version 2.0 shows
okay, than why unlink subraces? how would keeping them linked break the subrace?
Im sorry if im being annoying, its just i "lost" about 10 hours of work on my first homebrew and im lowkey discouraged. but im here to learn so thats why im asking a lot.
For example, here is version 2.0 of an item I published
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4113122-huntresss-bow
If you scroll down, you'll see version 1.8 listed in the version history, which is still accessible
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/3834629-huntresss-bow
Because if you were to make changes to the base race and then publish it, with it automatically linking to the previously published subraces (base races and subraces can be published independently), there could be clash between features as the subraces inherits structure and properties of the base race
Basically, while Subrace A version 1.0, B version 1.0 and C version 1.0 might be fully compatible with Base Race version 1.0, they may not be compatible with Base Race version 2.0. However, if you were able to publish that base race and have it automatically link to these subraces, issues could arise
do you happen to have an example where the subrace and race would be incompatable
Ultimately it's measure to mitigate homebrew content from breaking character sheets as much as possible
No, I do not. That does not mean it couldn't happen
because i personally cant think of one where it could happen
this just seems to me like a fix to an issue that doesnt exist
or something that should be fixed that isnt being fixed
I am not a developer, nor do I have exhaustive knowledge of the full scope of what can be done with the race creation tools. As such, I cannot off the top of my head provide an example. That does not mean it cannot happen, ergo the tools behave the way they do
Wait, couldnt i just report my own content to get it taken down, update it and republish it?
You could, but that would be an abuse of the report system and could lead to you losing homebrew priviledges
do you know someone who would be able to give me an example where that issue could arise?
No, not off the top of my head. You just need to accept that's the case
I'm relaying to you what I know, I can't do any more than that I'm afraid
i just cant wrap my head around that ever being an issue
That's how the system works I'm afraid
like, ive only been playing dnd for a little over 1.5 years and i cant see anywhere in homebrew or regular dnd where editing a race would cause any issues with subraces
This has nothing to do with the rules of D&D and everything to do with how the interactive and automated features of the D&D Beyond character sheet backend works
It's entirely a programming matter, not a rules matter
im sorry, ik im probably being annoying with this at this point so ill just stop
Well, I've explained everything I can, so drawing a line under it is probably for the best
thank you for explaining what you can. i appreciate it
No worries
i saw you removed my "test" content. would you be able to remove the race/subrace i published aswell or no?
No, the test content was removed for violating homebrew rules (don't publish unfinished/test content)
well i mean technically my other homebrew is unfinished. i forgot one subrace
Then publish the subrace
Like I said, abusing/manipulating the homebrew report and moderation services to get content removed so you can edit it is against the rules
went back to edit, and coultnt
Make it and publish it
I'm going to stop this discussion, you've had the rules explained and this is going far beyond the scope of this channel
i cant create a subrace for a hommebrew race without editing it. my homebrew donsent show up
Hi! I was wondering how to add a spell to the mystic arcanum spell list for a homebrew warlock subclass. I added the spell to the expanded spell list in the subclass but it isn't showing up as an option under mystic arcanum
Mystic Arcanum is a base warlock feature and so cannot be homebrewed/modified
Oh 😦 thats unfortunate. I had hoped that it pulled from the warlock spell list
Nope, it's a base class feature and those cannot currently be homebrewed
As a workaround, you can leave your Mystic Arcanum unselected and add your spell through other means, like a homebrew feat.
Thank you for the advice and the tip!
Does anyone know of any coupons for DND Beyond right now? It is my birthday soon and I am looking to splurge! 😄
If there are any discounts it would be announced on the site and on their social network accounts. But as of right now there isn’t any active general discounts
Thanks for letting me know!
is there a way to filter Magic Items that allow you to cast spells in the Magic Item list ?
Anyone else having trouble getting the character/monster art to generate on the combat tracker?
If you open the advanced filters, there’s a box called Attached Spells. If you put a spell in there, it will find items that grant you that specific spell.
Thank you
howdy, is there any groups or channels out there that advertise for players who would like to play their first game with other first timers or something along those lines
This is more of a #dnd-discussion question (this channel is for how to use the website itself) but many "looking for group" posts will say if they're beginner-friendly (and a fair amount are)
thank you, i appreciate the insight, ill look around that channel you mentioned then
hey how would I roll dice without the 3d dice showing up
Use Avrae, the Discord bot - no 3d dice involved
how many sheet can my player have in a campaign on master suscription?
I already know I can have 5 campaign and 12 players each.
But how many sheets can the players have?
99
Isn't that just for the subscriber, not my players?
the campaign can have 12 players, 99 characters per player.
i can't log in with my google anymore I click log in with google and it doesn't do anything
does anyone know how to get a homebrew construct to work with Artificer, I've made a custom Homunculus Servant and none of the hitpoints or anything auto translate
it won't, sadly
yeah you gotta to the calculation yourself and just update the statblock manually everytime you level up
How do u change the range for spear of back biting
You can change the range of items
hey I was wondering if anyone could tell me how ability scores and modifiers work because I don't understand it
Your ability score on the left determines your ability modifier on the right.
Your modifier can also be calculated by subtracting 10 from your score, dividing by two and rounding down
For future reference, this question would be more suited to #dnd-discussion or #dnd-rules. This channel is for questions on how D&D Beyond works
ok thank you
Hi sorry I think I post this before I don't think I got a solution yet I can't use custom portrait in dnd beyond character sheet every time I try the image in the portrait turn into black screen
I'm wondering if there have been any updates to the Sidekick system in DDB. I was away for awhile and I'm scrolling through update posts, but thought I'd ask here as well.
Is there a better/new way to handle Sidekicks aside from the Extras panel or adding a homebrew monster?
Not yet
Has the sorcerer spel slot multiclassing bug been reported?
What sorcerer spell slot multiclassing bug?
Those spell slots look correct to me.
afaik, your character's number of spell slots is consistent with an 11th level caster per the multiclassing rules
These rules, specifically:
You determine your available spell slots by adding together all your levels in the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard classes, and half your levels (rounded down) in the paladin and ranger classes. Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the Multiclass Spellcaster table.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#MulticlassSpellcaster
it shouldnt have 6th level slots
Yes, it should.
Take your 5 levels in sorcerer, plus half your paladin levels (6).
That gives you 11, so your spellslots should equal row 11 on the chart linked above.
Which includes one 6th-level spell slot.
Was the option to lock the sidebar in character sheets removed? I can't seem to find the buttons when opening it
It's only present above certain screen widths
The side panel can't be locked open it it's covering information
Do you know which widths? I used to be able to keep it locked but not anymore
I don't off the top of my head
You could try zooming out your browser, too.
It worked, thanks to both
Can you delete characters?
Yes, you can.
Is that on pc?
It's the same on desktop and mobile versions of the site, last option on the right
What would be the easiest way of manually adding a spell that goes beyond what my character could normally learn. If I'm a level 5 Wizard and have learned all 14 of my spells, but then I take the time to copy a spell into my spellbook, I'm assuming there'd be an easy enough way of adding it to my character sheet on DND Beyond.
Wizards can learn unlimited spells, you just keep adding more
So where would I add that on DND Beyond, it's saying I can only learn up to 14 at level 5
Wizard doesn't provide a limit on the spells you can learn in the system
Are you sure you're not reading the number of spells you can prepare?
Yah, I have 6 prepared spells out of the 14 known spells, yet going to my spellbook, I can't learn more
That's just telling you how many you currently know
Add another spell, it'll say 15 known
But they're all greyed out and won't let me
Those are cantrips, wizards are limited on the number of cantrips they can learn based on level
Ah oops, those are the cantrips, never mind
Yah, sorry about that. That was throwing me off
For example, I've given my level 2 wizard 45 spells
You can also do this from the character sheet
Yah, that works fine for me, I was just thrown off seeing all of the spells that I couldn't learn, but I didn't realize that was just the cantrips
Go to the Spells tab and select 'Manage Spells'. Then expand the 'Add Spells' option at the top
And Wizard is the only class that can learn new spells without leveling up?
Without any special feats or items, yes
This is covered in the wizards spellcasting trait
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#ClassFeatures
The spell you get is always aviable and does not take up a slot for spells you could prepare or pick. It's it's own thing. That however would have been a better question for #dnd-rules
Thanks. And my mistake on posting here
yeah this channel is more for help with the D&D Beyond website but its ok, no harm no foul. Just keep it in mind for the next time ;)
I am trying to set up a campaign as DM, another player is sharing their content with me.
Testing the combat tracker, I can't seem to roll monster's things. I just don't have any buttons on their sheet at all.
is that because I as the DM do not have a subscription?
Correct - currently the rolling from Monster statblocks is a new feature, so only subscribers have access. Any Sub will grant though (Hero OR Master)
alright, I shame
Hello, a campaign member gifted me (the DM w/ Master tier sub) the Feats from the Player's Handbook. Can this be shared with my campaign or can only the entire Sourcebook be shared?
It will get shared 👍
In fact, you don’t even have to be the one that owns it for it to get shared. Your player could have bought it for themself and it would still be shared with the rest of the campaign (through your sub).
It doesn't show in my Shared Content area though
Under Content Management?
That doesn’t effect character options, only what books people can read.
It’s mainly to stop players from reading ahead in whatever adventure you might be playing.
Since this isn’t a book, that doesn’t apply.
So, I've bought some player options (spells) recently and I can add them to my players character sheet, but they can't see it themselves, but strangely they can chose spells from XTE that I bought last year when I had a subscription. Do I need to subscribe again for them to be able to chose?
Yes, you need a subscription to turn on content sharing.
ok, because they could still choose XTE content after my subscription ended so I wasn't sure
How do I write the command for limited uses stuff like Ki or sorcery points?
that's Avrae isn't it
Me?
@spare timber Aud is asking where are you writing this command? In avrae or in the homebrew tools?
oh, in the homebrew tools
Hello All, I'm trying to create a feat that allows use of some specific spells, but I want those spells to still require spell slots. Whenever I do it currently it comes up as "Cast at Will"
is there a way to enforce spell slots on this or will I have to do it with charges?
You need add an Action first (like “Ki Points”). Save it, edit it again, then scroll to the bottom to find the Limited Use section.
I wanna make a home brew subclass for cleric and it’s first level feature is a lot like hex blades curse for warlock how would I go about setting that up in the homebrew for dnd beyond
In that case, I’d suggest making a homebrew copy of hexblade. Then you can see exactly how it was set up and recreate the parts you need.
Thanks ill try it out
We've got a shared campaign with friends, the dm has the subscription to share content yet when one of us tries to make a sheet with the shared content that content is not showing up. Any clue what it can be?
Are you making the character in the campaign itself?
Yes
I triple checked that XD
And the dm can edit the sheet, and he then has the options
But not when trying himself
If the player goes to this page, does it say their account entitlements are in sync?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/marketplace
Are other players in the campaign seeing those shared options?
I will let him try that
Well, I can but I got a lot of content myself. Dont know about the others
No, those entitlements were not in sync
Clicked that, going to try again
It worked, thaaaanks
Is it possible to add homebrew skills using a homebrew feat? Or would we have to add those skills to each sheet by hand?
Gotta add by hand.
Thanks, shame. Would have been nice to slap each player with the feat and be done
Hi, I need some help with adding feats on ddb character builder
It just takes like two seconds to make a new skill.
Homebrew or regular?
Just go to manage feats on your sheet not the character builder.
Can add all you want.
Nope
Unless you mean your level 4/8/12 etc feats or ASI?
Yes, those
And do you own the PHB?
4/8/12
I don't own the PHB. Another player who has a Master subscription owns it, we are in the same campaign, and content sharing is enabled
You're sure you're making the character in their campaign?
I can access the full PHB book on the site, but the feats don't show up in the builder
Hmm...I think I have an idea of a workaround
Let me test
You have to make it using their campaign join link.
You can just make it separately.
You can only access shared content on a character that exists within the campaign where content is being shared
What does your sheet show when you try to add a feat?
And what level are they?
And just to be clear, your sheet selection should look like this:
With it saying a campaign you're in.
My top character is not in a campaign, so they wouldn't access shared content when I edit them.
Yes like that
And there are no feats listed?
Nothing except firearms expertise
I'm trying to take Magic Initiate, which has no prerequisite
Are you in any other campaigns?
No
If you go to this page, does it say your account entitlements are in sync?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/marketplace
Hmm, strange.
This fixed it
Thanks for the help guys
I was wondering where on the site does it say you have to have a current subscription with reoccuring payments setup to gain the dice?
If I subscribe then cancel the reoccuring I dont get the dice. Even if I setup a year payment.
Which dice are you referring to? The subscriber perks dice?
Yes
You only get the perk for a given month if you are subscribed during that month
As far as I'm aware, this months perks haven't actually rolled out yet, and the perks aren't always dice
As for where it's said you need to be subscribed to get the subscriber perks, here you go: https://www.dndbeyond.com/store/subscribe
There's also a subscriber perks FAQ too: https://support.dndbeyond.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500008809442-Subscriber-Perks-FAQ
Pertinent questions
When I subscribe, do I get all past perks?
No, you only get perks for the months during which you were subscribed.
If I unsubscribe, do I get to keep these benefits?
No, the benefits will be removed if you unsubscribe.
**If I resubscribe, will I get perks that I missed while I was not subscribed? **
No, You only get perks for the months during which you were subscribed.
**Do I have to be subscribed for the whole month to get the perks? **
No. As long as you're subscribed at some point during the month.
If I subscribe for a few months then take a break and then renew my sub do I get the original ones I had back?
Yes!
And as for the specific query about reoccurring payments; all our subscription tiers and price plans are reoccurring (there isn't a non-reoccurring option)
Hope this helps
Is there a section on the site that I can see subscription history?
Yep, go here https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/marketplace and you can see any active subscriptions you may have as well as your payment history for past subscriptions
I dont see the subscription history.
Eh, its not there. Another question, Does DnDBeyond send a notice email before the new subscription charges?
There isn't a pre-warning, when you sign up there is mention that subs auto renew and that you agree to it. The renewal is based on the date you sign up so you can set calendar reminders if that helps?
I wanna make a home brew subclass for cleric and it’s first level feature is a lot like hex blades curse for warlock how would I go about setting that up in the homebrew for dnd beyond. some one told me to make a copy of hex blade and did but all i showed was an action for hex blades curse. am i doing somthing wrong or just not supported yet
i has question: I use D&D Beyond for a lot of the reference for my homegame, mostly monster stat blocks. When Monsters of the Multiverse releases, including the changes made to lots of monsters, will D&D beyond's listings of those monsters change as well or will there be two versions of them?
I don't believe they have announced how it will actually be implemented yet, because WOTC hasnt told them yet
How can you use Wildshape best in Encounters, both as player and as DM?
not a DDB question, Mirih
How do you set a custom crit range on a weapon?
You can't.
can a artificer using "resistant armor" re-apply the infusion to change the resistance or would he need a different piece of mundane armor?
It says you choose it when you infuse, so re-applying the infusion should let you choose again.
so you are able to re-infuse items?
You can replace the infusion with a different version of the same infusion
cool thanks!
This isn't help but I'm curious, are there plans for the Tal'dorei campaign guide getting ported into dndbeyond?
EDIT: nvm, should've searched before asking
Does anybody know when we will recieve january subscripton perks?
No word yet I'm afraid
sorry, maybe I wasn't clear, I meant in the Encounters tool of DBB...
You can't wildshape within the encounters tool. The player would instead have to add the creature to their extras and reference it there, using the manual dice rolling option for attacks and such
thanks, was afraid of that... the 'extras' are still not supported by the app, will this change any time soon?
DDB doesn’t provide specific ETAs for such things, but you can vote for it here if it’s something you’re eager to see.

@wintry barn you want this channel for help with the DnD Beyond website 🙂
Do you have a link to your sheet?
And you can't select a race? Screen shots might help
Well they won't have a link since the sheet can't be made without a race, class, and ability scores
Hmm, true, it would just be an error.
A screen shot of where the problem is would help.
A link can be provided to the character builder in process usually
You should be able to go to the "my characters" section and click on edit on your character in progress.
Does that answer your question @wintry barn ?
Can you post a screen shot?
Can you provide a description or screenshot of what the issue is exactly
You're not describing the issue in a way that I understand.
@wintry barn so what looks different for you?
This is my race section screen. When I click the blue arrow it let's me select that race.
Hi all. Is there any place where the information discussed in the dev update on youtube is posted in text format?
So in case the giant blue banner ribbon across the top of every single DDB page isn't alerting you, DDB finally got permission to put Mordenkainen's Mon...
That’s one specific quote from one specific update.
I think they were looking for a place to get recurring transcripts of each episode in full.
Does dnd beyond have an changelog?
The best way to find out what’s new, though, is to check out the weekly Dev Update on Twitch (and later on YouTube).
mmh I did mean for like a campaign
Can the DM of the campaign see the adjustments player make? @modest pelican @uneven lantern
No.
There’s not a record history of changes, no.
Is there a way to roll dice as the DM, but not allow the campaign members to view this roll? Or rather, can I roll dice on the website freely?
Yep, there's a dice button in the bottom left of the encounter builder and combat tracker. You can set your rolling target in the game log to 'self'
Is there a way to store items in a Bag of Holding through the DDB character sheet?
Yes. Add the bag of holding, click on the item you want to put inside it, then click the “Move” button at the bottom of the sidebar.
OK, thank you
This may be a silly question how do I create an echo knight on DDB?
I created a level1 fighter - but if I level it up to 3 there does not seem to be a way to make it an echo knight
well at least I am must be doing it wrong
I'm signed in and I own the content
You would select it at level 3 under Martial Archetype.
hmmm
You need critical role content enabled as well
nm I am crazy first I did not have cr enabled then I did not see the EGtW bit I was looking for "Echo"
Operator error
thanks
Hey there I am having trouble with the subclass creator. Trying to add a bard spell list to a rogue subclass I am making. What is the proper way to do this? I have a class feature called spell casting where should I go from there, I tried adding bard into the class section of spells under the class feature and it is only giving me one spell option in the character editor instead of allowing me to add spells in the character sheet. Any help is much appreciated!
On the main page for your subclass, there’s a box called Additional Spell List. Put “Bard” in there.
Thank you!
Alright, so I want to know if it’s possible to have some of my real books wired to dnd beyond
Is that possible?
Not in any easy kind of way. You could use the homebrew tools to make like magic items or subclasses, but there isn't "I own the books so I get it on DnD Beyond" deal.
Homebrew is fun!
Yeah except for the part where I have no idea how to do it
I own 14 books and I want my DM who’s halfway across the country to be able to use them
It's not that easy, but people can help and you can work it out. Or you drop the money on the things you want on DnD Beyond.
Oh, yeah that would be a real drag. Except for the Artificer, I think pretty much anything official can be homebrewed for free if you try hard enough
I guess
That's the price you pay for wanting to freeload an outside source into what I believe to be the best tool for making dungeons and dragons accessible for online use.
Here’s the issue, it’s either a fickle resource that doesn’t like to work, or a stable copy with less availability
I say this as someone with the Legendary Bundle on dndbeyond and slowly adding to my library of physical copies because, darnit all, it's an awesome game that I want to support.
I'm probably not doing anything this weekend. I'd be willing to walk you through thing's I've learned about the dndbeyond homebrew system.
Good luck. Check the forums, they got lots of useful info
Thanks
Anyway, I came here just for this, and now that I know what I need to, goodbye
Well I'm several glasses of rum and a session of Ravnica in through evening. Goodnight
for some reason players that join my campaign dont have access to my shared content
Things to double check
- You've still got content sharing enabled
- Your entitlements are in sync
- Their entitlements are in sync
- They're making characters within the campaign
entitlements?
Go here https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/marketplace
If your entitlements are in sync, you'll see a message saying so at the tope
If they're not, you'll see a sync entitlements button
Yesterday I asked about getting dev update info in text format. Someone said the best way is the dev update on youtube or Twitch. I'm really looking for the tl;dr of the dev update.. Someone else suggested the ChangeLog on DDB. That is a great suggestion, and I didn't know it existed. I'd still like the tl;dr of the dev updates, particularly recent changes and the roadmap, but the ChangeLog is pretty good. Thank you everyone!
Whoa, look at that
A text version of the dev update is something that used to happen, but was incredibly labour intensive. More efficient (and thus less prone to disruption) means of generating a transcript are something that's being looked into
As for the changelog, it's accessible from the icon at the top right of the screen (the two circular arrows)
hi, can I add an already created NPC to my campaign or I need to redo it through the "create unassigned character" thanks
hey is anybody else having trouble pulling up character sheets on firefox?
Yep! Just use the campaign invite link and you'll be able to select an existing character to add.
Working for me on both my desktop and mobile Firefox.
hmmm i guess lemme restart firefox then
thank you!!
I can't find any dragon's wrath weapons other than longswords or greatswords when I search from my sheet's inventory on DDB. Am I missing something?
That's intentional, I'm afraid.
The problem with creating all of the possible variants .... there's about 50 weapon types, 4 different status for the weapon (slumbering-ascendant) and IIRC 8 damage types (different dragons). That would be 1,600 magic items we'd have to build.
I know that addons like Beyond20 aren't really a DND Beyond feature so I may not be looking in the right place for help, but...
Is there a way to make the 'custom' dice rolls on the Beyond Character Sheets (Rolling the dice in the bottom left corner) show up in Roll 20? They never get sent to the VTT for me.
I honestly have no idea. You'd probably have more luck asking the Beyond20 folks.
Ok, thanks.
So I keep buying my subscription and it says the purchase completed and the subscription works for like an hour then cancels why does it keep cancelling?
I’d suggest reaching out to customer support for that one.
https://dndbeyond.link/SubmitTicket
Without looking further (which would require a support ticket), it sounds like payment is failing - I'd check with the card/bank/payment method to see if they are blocking anything.
Ok
I was thinking that just wondered if it was an actual issue or it was just failing
how do i change skill proficiencies in background if i dont have the option bar? (my dm made all the books available to me)
What do you mean by "don't have the option bar"?
option list like you have with class skill proficiencies
maybe it's called drop down bar?
like it saying Athletics and not having 'select a skill' as a dropdown
yes
it's locked to X and Y instead of saying 'select a skill' twice, a dropdown each to pick your background skills
if you pick the skills from your background in a class or race, then you can pick any skill in the background. I guess.
If I have the physical copies of books, but not the digital ones in DDB, would that be a problem if I was to join a game online? How would that work?
either someone in that game will have to do a content share with you so you can use the tools, or you add in things you want to use with the homebrew tools.
It's not that big of a problem as long as everyone knows how to look stuff up on their preferred medium and there's a level of trust between everyone in the game to allow physical dice rolling/book lookup alongside digital. My group has some players using DnDBeyond and Avrae and others who play with physical sheets and dice (I manage the sheets in DnDBeyond for these folks).
hi everyone! i'm trying to add a reaction to a homebrew monster, specifically - halo of spores. what's the command to add reactions? is that even possible?
Hi, Do we need to buy stories to create campaigns?
By 'stories' do you mean adventures?
Yes
If so, then no. Campaigns aren't linked to purchased content and you can make them without owning any adventures
oh thank you
When you use the sharpshooter feat in dnd beyond, how do you generally approach it, just make the normal attack/damage rolls and do the -5/+10 in your head or are you adding two custom attack actions where you have one with your ranged to hit -5, with zero damage and then another with the +10 to the damage roll? Or do you other more optimal ways?
That's more a question for #dnd-discussion
don't see that channel for some reason
Under IMPORTANT INFO look in #880965682462875679
thank you!
Change your background to “Custom Background” instead.
I'd suggest adding a second copy of your weapon, then click on it and open the Customize section in the side menu. In there you can adjust the stats as needed. You might also want to rename it ("Longbow (Sharpshooter)" for example) and set the weight to 0.
👍 thanks I also got that suggestion in #dnd-discussion
Works neatly :)
How can we start a new campaign? I mean, I created a new campaign and my friends joined. What should we do after this part? Is there any button or sth to make campaign start or is it just story telling or sth like this?
The campaign is a place to collect the characters and share content with other players
Actually playing requires a DM to run an adventure
☝️ Which you do by yeah, telling a story.
Understood, thanks 🙌
What is the grant type comped within the marketplace?
Free monster?
The company gave it to you, for whatever reason.
I think they gave it to everyone for some reason. I don't remember.
Originally that was released as a standalone purchase for charity, but then it was reprinted in Fizban's.
Maybe they had to make it comp those if you purchase the book in order for everything to work properly.
If you want another "comped", you can grab a free set of dice here. 😜
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/dice/frostmaiden
Nope. Physical purchase does not unlock digital.
You can use the homebrew system to replicate pretty much anything you have in text.
Just don’t publish it (you can use your unpublished homebrew creations without publishing)
Alternatively, you can purchase just the parts you need -- like a specific subclass. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Why is the dice rolling feature on dnd beyond very laggy these last 2 days? (is it just me?)
Do you have hardware acceleration turned on or off in your browser?
If it's off it might be more laggy than if it's on.
Or if you have an older or lower spec computer.
newer
Hi I have an issue. I have been trying to make a couple homebrews recently and I was trying to give the homebrews a cantrip, but everything I try seems to fail not giving the cantrip outright and not even access to the cantrip. Does anyone know how to fix this or am I just doing something wrong?
Hard to say without more info. What kind of homebrew? What steps did you take to add the cantrip?
Note also that homebrew edits can sometimes take up to 15 minutes before they show up on the character sheet. You might have done it correctly and the changes just hadn't caught up yet. Worth checking again before you make any further changes.
so the first of the two is a race that I was trying to put the dancing light cantrip on and I had gone in made it a race feature and added it in as a modifier/spell/additional spell, I left it alone with the spell and modifier one for about a day but the spell never showed in my test of the race. The other one is a subclass for warlocks, trying to add the Vicious Mockery cantrip to, tried the same ways and even tried adding it in as an action, damage could never be adjusted, but I was more impatient with that one never really giving it more than a few minutes to update so I will try to let it sit for a while with that one.
What I’d suggest is to make a homebrew copy of an official race that gives a cantrip, like tiefling. Then you can take a look inside and see how that was set up. Should help you figure it out.
ok thank you
I seem to have encountered a bug. I am creating an item that replicates the effect of Mage Armor, so that I can actually see the AC. I accomplished this by basically using a +1 studded armor, calling it something else and removing the weight. 13 AC + Dex. Then I put Requires attunement on it. Now it acts like just a regular studded armor, 12 + dex.
I have replicated this on multiple items, where the enhancements are ignored when I require attunement.
Is this a known issue?
Are you attuned to the item?
Down at the bottom of the inventory section, there's an attunement section
You shouldn't need attunement unless you turned that option on in the magic item. Equipping an item should be sufficient to change your stats. I think your mistake is modifying a piece of armor. Just make a wonderous item that adds 3 to unarmored ac
You can also add a bonus directly on the character sheet
Hi there, when I buy a single item or monster from the shop, can I import it into FoundryVTT ?
DDB doesn't have any official export to Foundry. If you're using a third-party tool, you'll have to ask its creators.
I use ddb importer module. Characterimport is no Problem, just want to know before i spend money
Like I said, you'll have to ask whoever created that import module. It all depends on how they've set things up.
Without knowing the specifics of the module, that's not a question we can answer.
D&D Beyond does not provide support for or endorse the use of any third party extensions. You use them at your own risk ultimately
I just preordered the new Mordenkainens book. When do I get access to that?
When it releases in May
May 17th to be precise, as stated on the marketplace page
I figured. Wasn’t 100% sure if I got it like the day before or something
I want to add a spell to my GOO Warlock's Mystic Arcanum. I've made a homebrew copy of an existing 7th level spell, Reverse Gravity, and under "Available for Class(es)" selected "Warlock - Great Old One." But the spell isn't appearing.
I have homebrew enabled on the character sheet. Does this subclass specific functionality for adding homebrew spells to Mystic Arcanum just not work?
It doesn't appear if I set the Available Class to "Warlock" either...
I'm seeing forum posts that say DDB has no way to modify the Mystic Arcanum feature, and others that say making a homebrew spell works.
--ah weird. it appeared after I selected a different spell on the list. huh
Sometimes homebrew edits can take up to 15 minutes before they show up on the character sheet. It might have just needed some time to catch up.
Hello
I made some sheets in DDB, and want to share them with my players here at Discord.
Why can't my players see the Note section where Bagground storie are placed, and why can't the players see their spells?
Those are hidden by design decision because many folks play in games where that information is supposed to be treated as secret and get revealed slowly as the game progresses (or not at all). So DnDBeyond decided to just make that data be non-public.
As far as spells - how are you sharing these sheets? Do players have a DnDBeyond account and log in and access the character in a DnDBeyond campaign?
But how can I get to share this information with a specific player?
If you're using DnDBeyond campaigns, if the character is in the campaign, you can make the character be unnasigned and have the player login and take over that character.
I sent them a link to the sheets I made. Don't know if they login from their own.
Maybe I'm not understanding everything here - hopefully some staff/moderators can jump in and assist more.
How can I move the generated characters form "My character" to the "Campaine"... Only seem to be able to generate in the Campain.
There is a campaign link in the upper right - using that link it will prompt you to pick which character you want to attach/load into the campaign
You'll need to do that for each character you want to bring in to that campaign.
Only the person who owns the sheet (the player) and the person who owns the campaign that character is assigned to (the DM) can see the Notes and Descriptions sections.
If the missing spells are homebrew spells, then getting everyone into the same campaign should solve that issue, too.
Once you’ve got the characters added to the campaign, make sure you click to Unassign each of them on the campaign page.
So, If I made the Sheet... But is the DM, that sheet is as if I was the player to?
Then send that same invite link to your players and they’ll be able to select that character for themselves and get full control.
As the DM, you’ll still have full access to view and edit their sheets as well.
Well... I still don't get it... How to move one made character, into the campaign
Open up the campaign link in a browser window/tab
You will be shown a list of your characters - select the one you want to bring in to that campaign
That character should now be attached to the campaign
I got to step away for a bit
Thanks... That helped ❤️
Can I clear a Game Log in a campaign?
Not currently. I believe that request has been made to the devs so potentially later on down the road there will be a way to "clear" it. But not right now. Sheesh, real life keeps pulling me away. Laters.
So just used code FUZZY10 in the checkout and it discounted $3 on a $99 purchase, that isn't 10%. Am I missing something? the items in my cart aren't bundles or already discounted items..
What are the items you're purchasing?
The coupon is a 10% discount on one book, If you purchase multiple it only applies to one.
Is there a way to homebrew non-magical weapons? There may be another way to deal with my problem, but I can't see it. I'm looking for a strength-based bow...
Nope. No way to homebrew equipment.
If you add the finesse property to a bow in the homebrew section, it should use the highest stat.
Alternatively, you can add a normal bow to your inventory, click on it, and open the Customize section in the sidebar. There you can adjust its stats to match your Strength instead.
Or you can add it as a custom action. Just go to the Actions tab and hit "Manage Custom" in the top right corner.
Ah, thanks. It'll still be a magical weapon for all intents and purposes, but I only want to be able to roll for it.
Do you mean just hard code the modifier, etc. then update it as the stat changes? Didn't think of that! 🤦♂️
Thanks all.
Why is it when I want to create a Homebrew, using Beyond, I only get a limited amount of Templates? Does Homebrew not work with Campaign Content Sharing?
I believe you need to actually own the content when creating homebrew based on existing content. Content sharing doesn't extend to that I think.
Damn, so I have to copy-paste a lot of stuff then 😔
Unless this is a bug, hopefully it is
Or make it up yourself, yes.
Also don't publish anything based off of official non-SRD material.
Anything you create, even if not published (e.g. made public) can still be shared/used in your own campaigns.
im new at d&d, i need help
Welcome! I suggest hanging out in #dnd-discussion and check out the pinned messages on that channel.
This channel is for supporting DnDBeyond website, services, and mobile app.
thank you
It isn't a bug, it's by a design. You can only copy content you own
Yep. Shared character options work only inside the campaign that's sharing them. Since the homebrew system is not a part of any campaign, it does not apply.
Do you need to be a subscriber to be able to share your character sheet with people? My character is set to public, but the shareable link I generate doesn't even work when I use it myself 🤷
Nope, character sheet sharing is available to everyone
What might I be missing then? I set the character to public, I press "Share" and copy the shareable link
Can you paste the link here?
okay, now I am confused. I did try it in chrome
there it works
doesnt work in firefox
this is just weird at this point
but at least something
right, doesn't work in incognito mode in chrome either. Just normal chrome 🤷
Can you paste the link here?
Removing a homebrew feat fixed it
Hey I'm on D&D beyond trying to build a character sheet but i keep getting an error message
keep getting this message
Whoops! We rolled a 1 on our Authentication check. We're heading into town to visit the blacksmith for repairs.
Try again after a Short Rest.
I'm not a mod or staff but one thing to double check is to make sure your browser allows 3rd party cookies, that any browser extensions that may interact with DnDBeyond are turned off (Beyond20), and that you're not behind a VPN - these things can sometimes cause issues with default DnDBeyond functionality.
Okay - can you open up your browser developer tools and check and see if there are any error messages (red text) in the console tab of it?
Also - maybe try logging out, clearing browser cache, and logging back in.
yeah no still not working
this is the code it gives me if thats any help
f002f843177f4515980b306ed99cb4b4
version 5.22.3
not sure what any of that means tho
Probably useful code for some of the DnDBeyond developers
Welp. Not sure what to do. Give it 30 minutes and try logging in again?
Hopefully staff/mods can jump in and help out.
can i @ any of them or is that a no no?
Do you get the same error in another browser? Or on another device?
(But yeah, please don't directly ping any of the staff. They work hard, and it's the weekend.)
Yeah i figured my fault
The only other thing I can think of is some network security thing messing with your internet/network requests
maybe
like are you behind a company firewall?
I'm using my college's free wifi
ah... maybe
yeah but they could be doing some generic "block stuff from these domains" stuff in the back which may prevent DDB from working correctly
or other network requests manipulation
gotcha I'll try when I'm at home and see if that works
hey guys quick question
I am trying to use the DnD beyond twitch integration, its worked in the past but now its just coming up "not logged in" but I am logged in so I am unable to set it to the campaign
Hey, so is there a way to homebrew a feat or item that can set a floor/minimum for the dice roll for an ability similar to how the Bard feature Silver Tongue makes your Persuasion or Deception dice rolls a minimum of 10?
in the encounter builder, can i put a character sheet in as the enemy for my players?
also, does the encounter builder account for the action economy? does it list 4 CR 1/4 as harder than 1 CR 1.
It uses the math from the DMG
And you can’t put a character sheet but you could put in a manual thing. You probably want to use an NPC instead anyways.
You can make a homebrew copy of that subclass if you want to see exactly how that was set up. Pretty sure it’s just text, though. I don’t think it actually effects the digital dice at all.
Not sure if this is the right spot, but as of yesterday I seem to be having issues connecting my dndbeyond extension to my campaigns, which used to work pretty decently in the time before.
I've tried clearing my cache, cookies, reconnecting everything, removed the extensuion etc
same here
Honestly glad someone else has it as it means it's less likely something I've screwed up!
Hey, im creating a custom class for my next campaing (i already have permission from the DM) im using DBD cause it makes the process a bit easier. the only issue is my DM doesnt use DBD and i cant seem to find any way to share my creation with him so he can just view it without us being in a "campaign" or publishing it (which has its own slue of issues)
am i missing something or is this not possible
Im also using DBD cause i suck at creeating characters, i always miss something so this just expadites the process
You would have to share a campaign or publish it for your DM to see the homebrew directly. However, you can assign it to a character and share the character with them.
i cant publish cause its not complete yet and "we strongly recommend you dont publish any work" is something i have gotten every time i publish something and want to edit it (if its a race/class with subraces/classes
I dont want to start a campaign cause again, he doesnt use DNDB (im one of 3 people in our party of 6 who uses DDB) and i dont want to share all of my work
making a character and sharing that seems like a bad idea cause you dont really see what is specifically from the class and whats from the race, it all is kinda just there, and if the class has options or subclasses (which it will) that would mean more than one character(of which i wont have enough free slots avalible).
im not trying to argue with you or anything, its just that for me none of these are really great options and i was wonering if there was just like an option to share this one class im making.
Under the Features & Traits tab on the character sheet, everything is specifically separated between class and race features.
But I’m afraid those are the only options available.
that doesnt show options tho does it? like a fighters fighting style? it would only show the chosen option
i mean, i could copy everything to word but i know id miss something lol
thanks for the help anyway
Yeah, it would only show the selected option.
rip 🤣
Unless the DM created a campaign and you add the character to it, but at that point you could just send them the link to the subclass itself.
Yeah, id want my dm to look at all the possible subclasses so we can weed anything out that shouldnt be there, i dont just make classes / races for me. if someone else wants to us them in our campaign (its unlikely but hey we can all dream big) than i want them to be able to customise their character a bit.
ill just make a word doc, wont be the first time
Good luck!
thanks!!
Hi, I have an old DDB Icespire Peak promo code from the Essentials Kit that was never used. Do they expire? I've tried to use it, but it hasn't worked.
It should still be valid. This article might have some answers:
https://support.dndbeyond.com/hc/en-us/articles/360025446474-How-to-redeem-the-codes-from-the-D-D-Essentials-Kit
How do i roll for companions like the homunclus servant?
Thanks!
You can't currently, extras doesn't support dice rolling at this time
Quick question. If I buy the Monster Manual on DDB, I'd have access to all the stats from that book, right? But if I don't buy it, can I still add any monster from it to the encounter builder?
If you have homebrewed your own copy of them, or have access through campaign sharing to them.
Great, thanks
And, does the discount code work for preorders? I'm debating between getting the Monster Manual (which I have a physical copy of) and Monsters of the Multiverse
The current code should work with pre-orders I believe.
Thank you 😁
You can add any monster to Encounters, even if you don’t own them. You just wouldn’t see any of its stats — only the name.
Ohhh okay. So, having the physical copy of the book would give me the information I wouldn't be able to see in Encounters
Yep
Alternatively, you could use your physical book to recreate them as homebrew monsters and use that.
Or you could buy just the monsters you need at the moment. Whatever you spend on those gets credited toward the remaining price of the book itself, too.
Glad to know, especially the Encounters part. Guess I'll be preordering MoTM, then. Seems like I'll get a bit more mileage out of it.
Thanks for the help
is there a way for me (through a feat for example) to give my character more ki points than base? the DM allowed a bit more so i would like to put it in my ki point section of the sheet but don't know how i would go about doing that if it is even possible
You can add a separate set of checkboxes, but there’s not a way to alter the existing ones.
that is good enough, how'd i do that?
A feat would probably work best. Give it an Action called “Ki Points” with an Activation Type of “Other” (both so it shows up beside the existing one).
Then save it, edit it again, and look for the Limited Use section at the bottom of the page.
coolcool, thankyou
Ok so I made a blood hunter whos order is order of the profane soul which should allow me to use blood curse of the soul eater but that just doesn’t show up in the drop-down selection for blood curses. The character level is 20 and the prerequisite is level 18 so I’m a little lost.
I believe you gain it automatically for your level 18 feature as a curse that doesn't count towards your total
Must’ve missed that part of the description thanks
Is there any way to make a homebrew class? not a subclass just a class, i found fourm posts from 2017 saying "its in the works" and im wondering if its still in the works 5 years later. i cant seem to find it anywhere
There isn't. Classes are incredibly complex and are not currently supported by the homebrew tools
oof
Hi, I'm very new to D&D and Beyond has been a massive help. I've recently set a character up where I want to include the Elven Accuracy feat, but it just doesn't appear for me. I've switched off prerequisites and it hasn't helped. My character is an Elf Wizard. Please let me know if anybody can help 🙂
Do you own the book where that feat is published? To access character options you’ll need to own the book on DnDBeyond, purchase the specific option, be in a campaign with content sharing enabled and have that content available, or use the homebrew tools to create it for personal use (do not publish it).
Hello! I have a question regarding homebrew on Beyond. I am trying to homebrew a Fighter subclass that uses it's own custom resource (kinda similar to spell slots but there are only 4 at first then it goes up to 6 at 15th level) and I want the custom abilities I'm giving to this subclass to consume the resource with each cast. For now I just have the resource set as a special action with 4 to 6 charges that reset on long rest. Does anyone know how to create a custom spell slot-like resource?
There’s not a way to have it auto-consume resources. You’ll have to manually check each box when used.
Is there are way to increase a monk's ki save dc using the Modifier tab when making a magic item?
I don’t believe so.
This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to share your content in a campaign you're a player in without also being DM?
so long as someone has turned on content share, yes
Is there a way to unpublish a race/subrace?
No.
So if the GM has content sharing on, and I got the subscription that I can do so in my own campaigns, how do I share my content in that other GM's campaign?
as long as content sharing is turned on in the campaign all content is shared no matter who owns it.
you don't have to do anything, sub or not.
Ah, nice. I can be lazy then. Thanks! 👍
Hello 👋
AT some point in 2020 I was experimenting with homebrew items and published one of them... I revised it a few times, but now when I search for this item I end up finding all of its previous versions. Is a way to clean up?
You can remove all but the active version from your collection.
The GM doesn’t have to be the one to turn on Content Sharing either. If you’ve already got a Master Tier sub, you can do it yourself, even as a player.
Does the coupon code only work once? I was thinking of buying 2 books and apply the discount code separately.
Yes it is only for one book purchase
Question: I have 5 characters already built and not part of any campaigns and plan to use them as DM NPCs and just created my own campaign. But when I try to add those 5 pre-built characters to my campaign there doesn't seem to be any options, only recreate them all by scratch again, am I missing something here? is there a way to add pre-built characters to campaigns? I am a Hero Subscriber currently.
- You should just make NPC statblocks instead of PC sheets for your NPCs.
- When you open the campaign invite link, you may need to scroll down to the "add existing character" section
- Go to your campaign
- Copy the invite link
- Go to the invite link
- Select one of your characters
They'll be added to the campaign
Repeat for all other characters
perfect thank you, kinda roundabout way of doing it, but works
It's the only way you can add characters to a campaign
I figured if there was a button to create an unassigned character, they was a button somewhere to assign one of your own characters to your own campaign or something somewhere.
Hi got a dumb question for the artillerist eldritch cannon ,I can shoot it more than once right, force ballista to be specific
That’s a question for #dnd-rules. This channel is more for technical help with DDB itself.
But it’s one hit every time you use your bonus action for it.
So once shot per round, effectively.
Until you get more cannons at later levels.
I have a friend that can't find Dark Elf in the races, isn't that in the base PHB?
Yep, under drow
Have they purchased the PHB/is it being shared with them via content sharing?
It's being shared with them
And they're making the character they want to be a dark elf in the campaign that it's being shared with them through?
As far as I know yes
Confirming now
Do they need to add the character to the campaign before they can access the shared content?
Yep
If I get an error when I try to send a private message in DnDBeyond's forums, does that mean the person has me blocked?
It depends on what the error message says
It gave me the zombie beholder
It just wouldn't send and I had no problem sending a private message to someone else shortly before.
That could be caused for multiple reasons; they may have changed their nickname from the one you're trying to message or their account might have been closed
Impossible to say
I believe they're still active and have the same name. We kind of had it out in a forum thread last year and I was kind of trying to mend things to rejoin a PbP group we were both active in. But if I'm blocked I won't bother them further.
I mean I get it.
Awkward situation to find oneself in though.
If you suspect there's a possibility they may have blocked you, it is best to assume they have and leave it at that
Crossposting from #homebrew
I literally can't figure out how to add a spell list for a subclass.
I'm trying to add the Bard spell list to the subclass but it's just not taking. Every time I think I've got it, I reapply the subclass, and then go to the character sheet and check the spells list and You do not have spellcasting or pact magic spells to manage. The spells that appear for your character were gained through other class features, racial traits, feats, or items.
Other changes I make to the subclass apply properly, but I can't add any spells
What class is the subclass for?
Rogue
(Which also gets the Arcane Trickster subclass that also (SUCCESSFULLY) adds spells)
Did you copy the Arcane Trickster subclass as your starting point?
I did not, because this subclass differs far too much and I didn't expect to get hung up on this
Then it won't work
So I have to start over from scratch after getting literally everything else
You can't add spellcasting to a sublass for a non-spellcasting base class unless you're modifying a copy of a subclass that already does that
This is literally the last part of the subclass to add
There's a part under the subclass description that says "Can cast spells?"
Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight are the only two that do so and so if you want to make a Rogue or Fighter with spellcasting, you must start with copies of those
Not all fields and modifiers function in all circumstances. The presence of a field or modifier does not mean it'll do anything
So what you're telling me is the last two hours of stumbling around this janky mess of a homebrew builder has all been for nothing
Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight have the ability to add the spellcasting feature (spell slots, etc) baked into them at the code level
Well not for nothing, you can make a copy of Arcane Trickster and copy your work directly over
That'll be quicker than doing things from scratch
To add spell slots to a subclass, you just need to give it a class feature called “Spellcasting”.
(Or “Pact Magic”, but you’ll end up with the same spellslots as an Arcane Trickster either way.)
I think it's supposed to be AT spellslots anyways?
I don't know
So all I need is a class feature called "Pact Magic" then?
Maybe its because you need access to spells to use the expanded spell list
I have "can cast spells" turned on
Ok, my bad sorry
Yeah, keep that on, too.
And make sure you’ve got Bard listed in “Additional Spell Lists”.
You should also know that homebrew edits can sometimes take up to 15 minutes before they show up on your character sheet.
That worked!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/subclasses/1151983-jester
If anyone's interested. It's for a friend of mine who's used this homebrew in another campaign.
Thanks to @uneven lantern for helping me get the spellcasting working.
No, I don't know why they took Rogue as their base class for this
I'm pleased to be wrong in this case, much kudos to @uneven lantern
One of my players has a pet that i put under extras, but it does not appear in the android app. It just says this section is under development.
Any idea when that will work? it seems like a large section to be missing, especially for rangers and druids
There's no ETA I'm afraid, D&D Beyond doesn't do timelines
You can vote for it here, though, if it’s something you’re eager to see.

I keep finding more and more practically required things to play the game that arent implemented. 😭 yet there are new dice released constantly.
Making a new dice set takes a lot less time than re-programming the character sheet, is why. Probably not even be the same people working on it.
Because the app team is a completely different team from the designers who make dice
If you’d ever like to learn more about what the team’s working on, I’d suggest a look at the weekly Dev Update on Twitch (and later on YouTube).
Two entirely different skill sets, the release of dice has no effect on the development rate of the app
thats kind of true. graphing deisng can be time sonsuming, especially on animated dice.
For the app, the code already exists for online, or in the case of a single page that shows every character in the campaign in the app. Port
One of the features i really wanted exists only in the app
It’s not as easy as “Port”.
a single page the DM can have to see the basic stats of all the players
But they have been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to make code more reusable between the site and the app.
I wish porting from the website to the app would be so simple. If it was the mobile team could take a holiday! 😛
That's not how it works I'm afraid. If it was that trivial, it would beg the question "why haven't they done that then?" Getting the app as feature complete as possible is a benefit to D&D Beyond as a company. Delaying features serves no purpose
The app is it's whole own architecture designed to function in a very different way to the site, pulling data from a different system in order to facilitate offline functionality. It is not just a port of the website
A friend of mine programs android and iphone apps for businesses. He said something like a lot of apps are programed as if they were a website and use the build in android browser apk, so the app is technically a website, rearranged and designed to look like an app, so it just takes the business website and makes it look app like and work applike, but its just a website in a browser. If that makes sense
Yes, a lot of apps do that. The D&D Beyond app doesn't though
But as mentioned, best way to stay up to date on feature releases is to tune into the Dev update on Thursdays
ive stopped looking at that. I have found threads for features being implemented that are years old before. So who knows what is actually happening internally
DnD beyond may be lacking, but it is still the best for sure. Just wish they would invest more in their development team
Is there a way to add in a homebrew non-magical item?
Not in the same way as a magical item, but you can add a Custom Item directly on your character sheet and give it whatever name and description you like.
You can also add a Custom Action on the Actions tab if you want to add an attack or anything.
Alternatively you can edit the weapon properties of an existing weapon to match what you want in the homebrew builder
How is the rod of lordly might used on ddb because I have it attuned and equipped but it isn’t showing up as an attack option
Also how would I go about the damages of changing the kind of weapon it is
There’s not currently a way to attach attacks to magic items like that.
Your two options would be to either add the weapon described by the rod (like a +3 mace), then change the name and set its weight to 0.
Or create a custom action on the Actions tab, by hitting the “Manage Custom” button in the top right corner.
Alright thanks
I'm in the editor trying to stagger racial elemental resistances for a race I am building. I have tried everything I can think of but it's not working. I'm trying to avoid giving all resistances at level 1. Is there something I am missing?
is there a way to add the 'dueling' fighting style bonus or do i have to do that manually because its not appearing when i equip only one weapon
longsword but i guess versitile doesn't count?
You have to have a weapon equipped and flagged as duel weild
It does on the one hand ez, but not when you two hand it.
Wait, you said dueling (I need more coffee)
So it only adds to the 1d8 damage, not the 1d10.
ooh, gotcha
Dueling 100% works the way its intended to on DnD Beyond.
thanks for the help
Np
Anyone?
So like fire resistance at level 1, lightning at level 5?
Exactly
You could try adding them as Options. Set the required character level and check Is Granted, then add the necessary Modifier.
Haven’t actually tried it myself…
I tried that already
But that’s the only means for specifying a character level I can see.
I tried that but it only allows the base resistance type. Whenever I go to add the other options it either doesn't give them or puts them all at level 1
Might not be possible with a race, then. I can’t think of any official races that do that (other than with spells).
There's also the possibility that it is possible and we don't know it. That's the frustrating part
Hey all, I've got a strange problem with one of my players characters and I'm wondering if I've missed something. They are a 2nd Level High Elf Wizard (Evocation). As well as the three cantrips they have chosen they also have Mending on their spells list. If I go to Manage Spells, it doesn't appear in their spell book or the prepared spells there. What's going on?!
Can you provide a link tot he character?
Ah thanks. I knew I must have missed something! Greatly appreciated.
Hey, so just to ask: When pre-ordering a sourcebook, in this case the monsters of the multiverse, you already get access to whatever available content is in there or until the release date?
For clarification purposes 😅
Pre-ordered content becomes accessible on the day of release
In this case: May 17th
Ah, oki
Hello, I am a new and will be DMing my first custom campaign soon, but I ran into an issue. How can I adjust the Encounter Difficulty level ("nerf" or "buff" a monster) to fit better into the encounter. Do I just do it on my head and hope that the numbers match or is there a better solution?
If you want to modify a monster, you'll want to use the homebrew tools to make a copy, and then make the changes
I just don't know what to change. That is my big issue :/
Okok
Easy-ish ways to tweak an encounter on the fly: add/reduce HP, add reinforcements or have monsters run away, and add in environmental effects
I purchased an annual subscription and have an email saying it's been purchased but now my account is saying I haven't purchased a subscription
Does ddb ever run sales on sourcebooks?
Might be worth checking you've purchased it against the right account (the one you're logged in as)
Yep, although none right now
Can you put equipment in a costum background?
Sure?
The twitch extension has been DOA for over a week. https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/bugs-support/131607-dndbeyond-twitch-extension#c9
Good day! I am having some trouble with the twitch app, last friday I wanted to stream with it, after using it for a really really long time. But as of ...
anyone know a way to fix it? It was working on the 23rd, then it just broke
how?
in a background you chose you get equipment, can you put equipment in a costum background?
If you select “Custom Background” for your character, you’ll need to manually add any equipment. It won’t show up in the Starting Equipment selector.
ok thx.
Uh, I think I have a few questions about overall combat for d&d. I think I understand some of the few components, like initiative and saving throws. But thinking about it from the top of my head feels like I'm killing all of my brain cells.
I suggest asking in #dnd-discussion or #dnd-rules for any specific questions - this channel is for support of DnDBeyond website, Discord, apps, and services.
alright
Random question: Is there a way to turn a PC into an enemy sheet? I've begun the build of a few high level encounters as leveled characters, I'm going to change them but it seemed like the easiest way to start.
I mean you can just use a PC sheet for a monster although typically monsters just use a monster stat block since they don't really need/use levels or class/race features and instead have their own abilities and options. I would suggest looking at existing monster stat blocks and even maybe deconstructing one via the homebrew tools to see how they were built and consider if using an existing monster stat block as a base for your own homebrewed monster would work better for your needs.
So my subscription went out recently because my visa gift card ran out of money and I forgot to switch it to another card. So I subscribed but it still won't give me my characters.
I generally use a PC stat block to start the design, and then adjust the general skills to be more specific/flavored to the creature! I just don't want to start the sheet from the beginning (Especially adding spells, since that can be a beast to add all of the options.)
I recommend using the homebrew tools on DnDBeyond to take a monster and create your own version and add on any features you need/want to spice it up. Just make sure to not publish it but you can still use that monster where you need it (except in Avrae Discord bot but hopefully that will get addressed someday)
I'm trying to homebrew a weapon. Is there a way to override the damage that the base item provides? I see that you can add damage, but I need to replace it.
There may be a better way to do it, but you can set the base weapon to be there one that has the damage dice you want, since the base weapon won't show up anywhere, just what you name it. IE I want this mace to be 1d12, I set it's base weapon to be a warhammer and then call it "Heckin' big mace"
haha, I just did that. Tis a musket now 😂
You're probably going to have to click finish unlocking
I fixed it I just had to wait until tomorrow
my grave cleric reborn lineage has Decompose as a cantrip, but I did not learn it. I has both Delete and Always Prepared beside it, which I have never seen happen before. My race seems to show no implication it gave me the cantrip, nor my class/subclass (which gave me Spare the Dying). If I try to Delete it, the page crashes and, upon refreshing, I find it is still there. I'm not too fussed about it being there as it suits my character, but I really want to know where it came from or if it's some sort of bug? How is a good way of looking into what feat or such it is linked to/come from?
It's probably homebrew belonging to someone else in your campaign.
100% is homebrew that either you or someone in the campaign has (and incorrectly setup)
If the owner removes it from their My Homebrew Collection, it should solve the issue.
oh yeah, we have it as an optional cantrip thanks to Critical Role content that she has on I think but I'm not sure how it got there is the issue. I did not learn it and none of my feats, class or race gives it either. Plus it simply will not let me delete it. It's really odd
none of the others characters in the campaign have this issue either, just mine
The issue is that whoever created it set it to be accessed by the subclass you have, rather than the class - cantrips shouldn't be assigned to a subclass because it breaks the sheet (with the always prepared and the manage/delete option)
oh I see! I am the only cleric, so that makes sense
to make a cantrip available to a subclass (and only that subclass, not the class), it needs to be added to the subclass itself (so a homebrew copy of the subclass). When using a homebrew copy of the cantrip you can add it to the class, but adding to the subclass causes the issue you see
(as you can tell I've seen this pop up enough to recognise it on sight 😛 )
The first step to solving it, though, is to talk to your group and find out who it belongs to. They're the one that will need to fix it.
yeah, I just let DM know and it was in their collection, so they have removed it. It still seems to be showing in my sheet though, even after toggling between domains to try and refresh it. I will ask around the players to see if others have it in their collection too. If not, I'm pretty stumped!
thank you though! this has put me on the right track. Worst case scenario, I can't remove it and I will let DM know to ignore it
Might take 15 minutes or so for the character sheet to catch up.
thank you!
hey everyone I just cannot use dice lately. it's slow and glitchy. It's like this in both Firefox and Chrome. Hardware acceleration is turned on. I disabled all extensions. I can't make it work
Is it an older computer? Did you try clearing that cache?
Also certain browser extensions can interfere with normal DnDBeyond functionality
They said they disabled all extensions.
oof I can't read.
Is there any way to update my card info for the subscription?
On subscriptions started prior to December 7th last year - you would need to cancel the sub/wait for the sub time remaining to finish, and then start a new subscription.
For subscriptions since Dec7th, the subscription management page allows you to update your payment method.
Hi, all! Hopefully this is quick. Is there a way to send a message within D&DB to players in a campaign I have?
Maybe through the forums if you know their account name?
Ah, thanks. Yes, I have their account name - so hopefully they see their messages!
Hmm. They've never posted (not surprising) but I don't think there's a way to find them to send a PM? Am I missing something?
You can send a private message (or group private message) to another member(s)
If you know their username, can just add to the PM (although i do agree, right clicking and send message is way easier)
Could you guide me through some of the clicks? I can't seem to figure it out.
I've tried going through their character sheet. And I can't seem to search them using the Forums.
Oh, I see what you're saying. I can send a PM to a random user but then change the "Recipient"!
us original mod squads set a fancy PM us URL which we added to our signatures which should effectively let you edit to easily send to another user, let me grab and I can PM you (otherwise everyone will click and Ill have a million PMs)
Ah, no worries. I'm good!
Looks like I can either click a random user like I described or just straight up go to the messages icon ( 💬 icon next to my profile) and then click New Message.
DNDBeyond still has extreme difficulties showing images.
And before anyone says it
all browsers, cleared all cookies and cached images and files, incognito, no extensions.
Is there a way for me to access the collage of spirits
get VRGTR
You can either purchase Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft or purchase it individually for $1.99.
Anyone experience this issues. I'm signed into beyond and tried refreshing by signing in and out. Uninstalling the extension and that... kind of stumped.
Thx for wanting to help
Then in race go here:
Click on Origin Manager then you can change your ability score.
Thx for the help
No problem.
Is there a way to batch/group delete stuff from my homebrew collection?
Nope
Is there a way to add a homebrew race as a prerequisite to a feat?
Nope, not at this time
any outlook on when creating homebrew classes will be added to ddb? seems like its been in the works for about 5 years now
It has not been "in the works". It's just something people have expressed an interest in wanting.
It might never exist. Their primary goal is just recreating existing content. Maybe moving towards a VTT since the dice rolling is expanding as well.
looking at forum posts says otherwise, as there is staff members from ddb saying it will probably be added in the future
back in 2017
That's outdated information.
DnD Beyond also doesn't do timetables. The most they do are the Dev updates and forums.
You can offer feedback on the forums or on #ddb-feedback that you'd like that, but it isn't something that they have anything public to share on currently.
i was just wondering if or when it would ever come out since there has been forum posts with moderator and staff member replies since 2017 (latest i found was 2019, but that was short research im sure theres more somewhere)
indicating the possibility of such a thing
but if its not gonna happen whatever ig, not much i can do about it
Should be noted, "probably added in the future" doesn't mean "in the works"
It's an often request feature, but one that is also incredibly complex
well, the actual post said "planned for longterm roadmap" which to me would indicate that it is in the works
It's planned for the longterm roadmap, not "currently being worked on" which is the type of phrasing that would indicate it's in the works.
