+3 from Charisma modifier then +2 from Proficiency Bonus
It changes it from Dexterity to Charisma
It's not additive
oh cause its finesse weapon
+1 from Dex
gotcha
vs +0 from STR
Word I understand now - ty!
No problem
T^T i have another question,, what are these ????
If something modifies your stats (like say a magical effect) or overrides your score (like a magical item) you can use those fields to indicate those modifications.
Score changes it to whatever you place in it
Do we need to adjust them ? and if yes how do we do that ???
You usually shouldn't need to touch it in the first place
Generally you won't need to touch them
ohhh... Thanks !!!
It's just something that you'll use if you fight something that changes your ability scores like a Shadow
Ok i get it now,,
why is there +2???
Im really sorry for asking a lot, im really new to dnd so i dont know exactly what im doing
You add your Dexterity modifier to damage
Oh so its dexterity and not strength,, ok understood
It depends
If a weapon has the Finesse property then you can choose
DnD Beyond just automatically adds whichever is higher because that just makes sense, and you always add Dexterity to ranged weapons not Strength
Finesse property ???
Click on the weapon and it'll explain, but each weapon has some properties
Finesse means you choose between Dexterity or Strength, Two-Handed means you need two hands on it to attack , Versatile means you can hold it in either 1 or 2 hands for different damage, etc.
Finesse are the dexterity-ish melee weapons like rapier, dagger, shortsword, scimitar, and whip.
Thanks a bunch !!! the way you explain is so much easier than other discord server members
No problem
Aberrant Mind - Psionic Spells. We don't currently have a method to allow swapping these spells out. We are looking at solutions for this.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/bugs-support/87774-tashas-cauldron-of-everything-issues-and-support
In the meantime, you can make a homebrew copy of that subclass and change the spell that way.
Oh okay thank you!
Ummm hi I need some help with integrate the campaign into discord the issues is that two server have a VERY different out come when we do the (!campaign (with the campaign link))
the first one which is mine have full effect of showing what kind of roll it is and what modifiers the character have with a box name
While the second one is just Roll a d20 with out the modifier or what roll it is. How do I fix this ?
The player needs to link and select their character as well for the roll to appear formatted
I did link my character in the second campaign
The format still didn’t show
Here I make a cap scene
This both rolls from dnd beyond
That 5 is supposed to be survival check with +3
Are they just rolling a dice instead of clicking on their survival bonus?
I click the survival bonus
You click the survival bonus for them?
Are you using any extensions like Beyond20 that might be interfering?
No not to my knowledge cause the only difference is
This one is my campaign that I start several months ago
And
This I just help the new dm do the (!campaign) thing
Have you tried removing and re-importing the character?
Hmmmm I’ll try that then
I've seen more than one report of this recently in #ddb-avrae-help; one appeared to be Beyond20 related (and was resolved by disabling the extension), and one did not appear to be related to that (and I don't believe there was ever a resolution for it)
It did help huh guess it work like a battery rules XD
@wanton shard thanks for the help good sir
When in doubt...
Yeah but the bot need some tuning that for sure
And Man dndbeyond dice roll really bad for my account lately
Is there something that needs to be done to access homebrew spells from DDB on my game server?
If you're referring to via Avrae, you need to add them to scrollrack, avrae's homebrew spell management system
Avrae can't currently pull homebrew spells directly from DDB
Scrollrack? Huh. Never heard of it.
You can set those up here:
https://avrae.io/dashboard/homebrew/spells
Scrollrack?
That was a mistake on my part, I was misremembering
Is there anyway for me to add a feat to my character sheet? Free of VH or an ASI?
Yep! On your sheet, go to the Features & Traits tab, scroll down to Feats, and click Manage Feats.
Sweet thanks
My dm is running feats a little differently, I feel like I’m gonna like the way he does them
You start with a feat, can’t pick feats at ASIs and if you want one you have train to get it
And I like that, gives people a reason to be practicing with a shield or magic and such
Okay... so now that I have time to actually look at this... Concerning the Avrae Spell Management System... how do I pull a spell I created on DDB into my tome on the Spell Management system?
Tomes are imported automatically. !tome list will show your available tomes, and you can use !tome <name> to switch between them.
!tome server will make your active tome available for the whole server.
(BTW, we’ve got a dedicated channel for Avrae support — #ddb-avrae-help)
I'll move to that channel then.
Hi,I'm new to dnd and i just wantes someone to explain to me how this works
This channel is more for help with the dndbeyond site, but DND is a TTRPG where the world is run by a DM, on the fly
TTRPG = Table Top Role Playing Game
DM = Dungeon Master (sometimes called Game Master)
All games are as different as the players sitting at the table (or remotely at their keyboards).
Welcome! There’s an excellent guide here on how to use D&D Beyond.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/754-how-to-play-dungeons-dragons-using-d-d-beyond
For more information on the game itself, I’d suggest heading over to #dnd-discussion. There’s a bunch of other helpful links pinned to the channel there.
I'm trying to add a custom attack action to a character sheet, and despite what I enter for the damage (2d8) it shows on the character sheet as 1d8
Is it possible to have a shield displayed as a weapon on my character sheet?
No, it isn't.
@dapper pond a work around a lot of folks use for this kind of thing is to make a custom action
click your actions menu, manage custom
and add a custom action labled "shield"
: )
hope that helps
Hello!
Just bought Guidmasters Guide to Ravnica but I cannot create a Druid of Circle of Spores for some reason
The option doesn't appear AT ALL so any help would be appreciated
Make sure you have Magic: the Gathering content options turned on
Yeah, all the Ravnica and Theros content is behind that toggle.
why can't i attack with a staff i just get text
We'll never know!! The suspense.... 👀
can anyone assist me how homebrew works on ddb?
Those dialogues are from Beyond20, a third party extension that isn't supported by D&D Beyond
As such, we can't help you with any issues you may be having with your sheet, as it's being modified by an app we have no control over
You'd be best off contacting the developer
If you disable Beyond20, it should function as intended.
The best general advice is to find some official content that does what you're after. Then you can make a homebrew copy of it and see exactly how that was set up.
But if you explain more about what you're trying to do, we can give you more specific advice.
so I used a site http://dungeonsandhomebrews.blogspot.com/2019/05/5e-homebrew-class-priestpriestess.html?m=1 this here to make my homebrew and I get this message on the website in ddb
I dont understand
The first thing I'd suggest is to Edit and Save again. That will retrigger the validation process.
One other important thing to know is that those warning apply only if you're intending to publish this for community use.
ahhh gotcha
If this is only for you or your campaign members, it will be shared with them automatically. You do not have to publish and those limitations won't apply.
gotcha and how to I apply this to my cleric?
You'll have to go into the character settings and make sure Homebrew Content is turned on, then you should be able to select it just like any other subclass.
^Make sure to save it from the main homebrew page. Not one of the subpages
One other quick publishing note, since you said you got that from another site:
You're only allowed to publish your own original creations.
So even if those other issues were resolved, this still wouldn't be eligible to publish.
But again, it's totally fine for private use. 👍
yeah I wasn’t planning to publish it anyways just use it for my own private campagne
Is anyone else getting authentication errors today? I tried to access my characters, and I keep getting kicked off. I can find them on my phone using mobile data.
Do you have any browser extensions, VPNs, ad-blockers, etc. that may be interfering? Are you getting the same results if you try in a different browser, or a browser using Incognito mode?
I'm not sure. I just keep getting the ring of death. I've allowed cookies, I have no ad blockers as far as I can tell.
What browser are you using?
Google Chome. I have a feeling the network I'm on is blocking something.
If you log into D&D Beyond in Chrome's Incognito mode, are you still getting the errors?
That's a quick litmus test whether it's some browser settings causing the issue
Yes.
And no local settings (firewalls and the like) that might be interfering? Kapersky anti-virus software is a known troublemaker.
I don't know if they are, tbh.
I can tell you this wasn't happening earlier this week.
Scraping the bottom of my tech support barrel here, but have you tried resetting your modem/router?
hey, I just started this thing, and I have no clue how to start a game. Help?
There is a plethora of information for new players pinned in #dnd-discussion, primarily these posts here:
<#dnd-discussion message>
<#dnd-discussion message>
There are many ways to play, either in person with friends or at your local game store, or else online (with friends or with new people!). If you are looking specifically here for an online group, you can either post in #750812887697588356 using the pinned format, or else contact the DMs for games you're interested in joining from #looking-for-players. Most online games will take place using some kind of voice chat (often Discord, as it is convenient), but every game is different!
thanks
trying to create a new arcane trickster but it doesnt let me select the lvl 3 option. only gives me theifr
its for a 7th level game
Do you own the Player's Handbook on D&D Beyond, or is it being shared with you through a campaign with content sharing enabled?
i have not recieved the campaign invite, not do i own the digital phb
nor
that must be it...my other one has it enabled from the campaign
The only subclasses that are available for free are those included in the Basic Rules. If you are planning to play in a campaign where someone is able to share the PHB, you'll have to join that campaign (or one with the shared content) and create the character there.
You can also create it yourself for free using the homebrew tools
figured. i just dont wanna have to buy another phb for digital. already have the hard copy
Which is why homebrewing the content is valid!
You can also buy individual subclasses, spells, magic items, etc. piecemeal for a fraction of the cost. And anything purchased from a sourcebook will subtract from the total cost if you decide in the future to purchase the full thing
whats the rate to buy like the rogue subclasses?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook
Individual subclasses are $1.99 each (USD)
I bought the Source book bundle but does that mean any of my players can read the books now? or do they only have access to better character creation while in my campaign?
I wasnt sure before i shelled out the dough
As far as I know, content sharing only happens when at least one player in the campaign has a Master Tier subscription and the DM of the campaign has enabled content sharing for that campaign.
Right but what does it share? @edgy oriole
Whatever content has been purchased by anyone in the campaign
Hi, I just joined DDB (hero level) to use the Character Builder, because I had found that someone else had already homebrewed the race I wanted to use. I added it to my Homebrew collection, but I can't figure out how to select it as a Race in Character Builder. Am I overlooking something obvious?
In the character settings there are a bunch of toggles to filter what content your character can pull from. Toggle on homebrew content.
Oh, interesting! I had set the toggle to allow homebrew content when I started the char, but I hadn't saved any homebrew content at that point. I had to re-access the character settings screen after getting the homebrew content to make it show up on the race selection page.
I don’t know if I should ask it here or in #moderator-support but I’m gonna ask it here as to not bother the mods, is someone allowed to post twice or more before 7 days has past between the posts if each post is a separate game in #looking-for-players, or is it just you post then for the next 7 days you can’t post again until those 7 days are over or?
Is there a way to add dark gifts from Van Ricahten's guide to Ravenloft through DND Beyond yet?
Not yet. It should be supported as a part of the General Features System coming some time this year.
Nevermind saw a guy put a homebrew up as a feat
If you have multiple games, the best option is to post them at the same time, either in a single post or back-to-back.
If it is content from Van Richten's Guide, note that users aren't allowed to publish homebrew content that's not their own (including official content). It's fine to homebrew it for personal use, but publishing it is not allowed.
Hi, just wondering. How do I check what email for DDB I've linked my Avrae to? (if possible at all)
Are you logged in? You can go to your profile, click the My Account button and it will show you all your linked accounts to your DnDBeyond account (Google, Twitch, Apple, and Discord).
Nope. I'm logged out currently, and can't recall which Gmail I've used for my DnDBeyond account
Can you log into your gmail accounts and look back in your emails for anything from DnDBeyond?
You will need to know which account you login to D&D Beyond with.
That's what they are having trouble with
If your account is from before April 2019 it would be a Twitch account.
I don't believe I used a Twitch account, no. I'll try looking back through my emails though. Thanks for the suggestion 👍
If you know what your account name is CS may be able to help.
I know the account name, yeah. If I can't figure it out, I'll try customer support then. Thanks
I don't know if this fits here, but anyways:
Is there a way to homebrew a stackable magic item?
What exactly are you trying to stack?
I want to make a special ammunition for the sling
I don't need it to let me roll something, I just want to have five of them in my inventory without taking up space
Ah, so you want to be able to adjust the quantity.
Yes
You could definitely do that directly on your sheet as a custom item.
Go to Inventory > Manage Inventory, and select Custom Items in the sidebar.
Thank you! : D
Or if you want an actual homebrew magic item, you can make a copy of something like Arrows, +1 and adjust it as needed.
Actually, there’s a Sling Bullets, +1, too.
Sadly this does't seem to be possible. If I use them as a preset the program wants me to decide on a base weapon, which brings us back to the previous problem. But a custom Item will work
Oh yeah, I see what you mean. 😕
Can I force the unarmed fighting style on a character?
cause Ranger allowed it in UA but doesnt anymore
You can leave the Fighting Style blank from within the Character Builder and either create a magic item or feat that grants the same benefits as the fighting style, or else create custom actions on the character sheet that otherwise display the same information for your Unarmed Strikes (and remove the standard Unarmed Strike from being displayed as an attack)
I downloaded this Homebrew class a while back https://www.dndbeyond.com/subclasses/412010-dragon-rider
Now I am in a new campaign and made a ne character but wanted to use this subclass. However I cant figure out how to choose the dragon egg????
Unfortunately, as this is homebrew, it's up to the individual author to make it usable. It appears from looking at the subclass that the 3rd level feature comes with egg options, meaning when your character chooses this subclass at level 3 in the Character Builder, there should be a Dragon Egg Bond pane with a drop-down selection box—provided the homebrew's author did not mistakenly choose the "Hide in Builder" option for this feature.
rip i used to be able to select one and now i cant
so... is anyone else having snags with adding the rolling feature to homebrew content? i've used the extension on the builder but its put the correct notes around it but then doesnt appear as it should once out of the builder 😦
Which extension are you making reference to? D&D Beyond does not currently offer any extensions for generating rollables for homebrew monsters. There is currently a forum post detailing how to construct them: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/106856-adding-rollable-tags-to-your-homebrew-monsters-for
I also recall other members here creating tools to generate them.
Each target regains hit points equal to [roll]3d6+2[/roll] . Once you use the acorn, it can't be used again until the next dawn.
such as the above
At a minimum, you'd need [rollable]3d6+2;{"diceNotation":"3d6+2","rollType":"heal"}[/rollable].
That is the syntax for automatically rolling within the forums and comments, but does not work for homebrew creation descriptions. Currently, only homebrew monsters support the use of rollable expressions, which are different from what you've posted. A full detailed account of them is in the forum post I've linked above.
That's for rolling dice in forum games
That doesn't populate the dice formula needed for the game log
ohhhhh, well from the image i've posted i thought i'd be able to add it into the homebrew content for ease of use but never mind.
Also, I believe [rollable] only works for homebrew monsters at the moment, not magic items.
no worries 🙂
It's been previously mentioned that they would like to support rollable buttons anywhere on the website that you'd expect to see them. Currently (as spamandtuna says), it's only available on monsters.
Yeah, the dice syntax is only for monsters and has to be entered manually as it's quite complex
In the meantime, you can set that up as a Custom Action directly on your character sheet. Just go to Actions, hit Manage Custom in the top-right corner, and you can add it in the sidebar.
thats fine 🙂 thankyou for the help though 🙂 i'll do it once the item is found by the character later today 🙂
How do I make a homebrew item on DND Beyond that gives all damage I deal get a +3?
All damage from that weapon, or all damage from any source?
any source
(well anything requiring an attack roll but I'm not worried about that)
I don't believe there is currently a modifier that will allow for flat damage increases to all of your attacks. You can certainly customize every attack to have a Damage Bonus of +3, but will have to remember and manually track whether that changes in the future
I just don't know what modifiers do it properly
I don't mind adding multiple modifiers
I'm trying to think if there's some official content that does that, but I'm coming up empty.
If there isn't one, it might not be possible.
it's a custom item either way. it's +3 force damage to anything you hit with
Best guess at the moment is Type: Damage, Subtype: All, Fixed Value: 3.
But I'm honestly not sure if that will actually work.
At the very least, there's no existing magic item using that modifier.
I mean, I can always mess with what you told me and hope it works
it didn't seem to add the damage to eldritch blast, but it did for my dagger
Nah, looking at the Magic Items that use Damage in general, I don't think that's gonna work. 😕
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items?filter-type=0&filter-effect-type=2
There is a Bonus > Eldritch Blast Damage modifier. You could combine the two
oh right
If Type: Damage, Subtype: All works for your dagger (as in, for regular weapons)
There is no all in subtype for me
that's what I tried first though lol
the cold modifier didn't affect the Tentacle either
I can do it all manually, it'd just be nice for it to be automatic
Ah, it's Melee Weapon Attacks? Then yeah, you'd have to mix and match various damage bonus modifiers to approximate what you want. But as with customizing the damage of all of your attacks, you'd have to stay wary about every new attack you add to your sheet, to see whether it's included in the item you set up or not
And if you're making this extra damage all force damage, simply adding the number bonus won't reflect that
We're using avrae for the attacks and stuff, so I can add a -d 3 everytime I attack.
DND Beyond doesn't have everything lol but that's okay
If Avrae is automatically tracking immunities and resistances, you'll want the extra damage to actually be force damage
AKA -d 3[force]
I didn't know that I could do that. good to know
There's a few other Avrae tricks that would make this easier, if you want to jump over to #ddb-avrae-help.
Created the custom action
how do I import it into the sheet?
I'm not sure I understand exactly. How did you create the custom action?
"manage custom" click on that
create it
Then if you've created it directly on the character sheet, it should be ON the character sheet. In the Actions pane. If you want it to display as an attack, be sure to toggle on the "Display as Attack" box in the custom action
Activation Type is another helpful field there, if you want to control which section it appears in.
(It'll be at the bottom under Other by default.)
oh thank you
Hi. If I make a homebrew spell, can I link to that spell with [spell]spellname[/spell] in a stat block or item description?
While there are unofficial workarounds for creating tooltips for homebrew spells (which are subject to break at any time if D&D Beyond changes the way tooltips work behind the secenes), the default [spell] tag will not turn your homebrew spells into tooltips as it would with official spells. The same goes for any homebrew creations
Does that mean there are non-default [spell] tags?
Ah, no, sorry. Poor choice of words! I meant natively creating a spell tooltip with the [spell] tag (the default method), rather than the code-based workarounds (that aren't officially supported)
Oh, ok. Thanks for the info.
You can use a normal web link, though.
How would that look?
Like a standard green link, similar to what you see when an object or feature refers to a section of a particular book
You just copy the URL for your homebrew spell, then use this button to add it in.
If you view the page source of something with a tooltip, you can see the way the tags are interpreted to create the tooltip using HTML. You can emulate this yourself by finding the syntax for the homebrew thing you're trying to tooltip, then replacing the necessary bits with your homebrew version. For example, here's how heat metal looks when it gets its tooltip added via [spell]heat metal[/spell]:
<a class="tooltip-hover spell-tooltip" href="/spells/heat-metal" data-tooltip-href="/spells/2141-tooltip">heat metal</a>
The href and data-tooltip-href will need to point to your homebrew spell information, like so:
<a class="tooltip-hover spell-tooltip" href="/spells/####-homebrew-spell" data-tooltip-href="/spells/####-tooltip">homebrew spell</a>
Bear in mind that this is unsupported officially and may potentially break at any time.
And this is how you would enter that HTML
Alright, thanks 👍
Hey it worked. You got a typo though: it has to be data-tooltip-href="/spells/####-tooltip
Thanks again.
Ah yes, my error! Good catch.
Hey all. How can I make a dragon slayer weapon automatically roll damage for dragons?
It does it automatically on roll20. Ive messed around with DDB for abit trying to figure it out.
DnDBeyond has no way to know if you're targeting a dragon or not - so as of right now, you must roll that extra damage seperately.
What you could do is create a custom attack using your dragon slayer weapon as a model and add in that extra damage.
I'll have to see if I can do that while using a homebrew dragon slayer as an option. I havent been successful as of yet.
Yeah I'm starting to think the best you can do is add a custom attack that does 3d6 slashing damage - which still means you have to hit two buttons - the Dragon Slayer weapon normal roll and damage, and then the special attack roll to do the 3d6.
I'm trying to make a homebrew weapon that can be any melee weapon. I started making it from scratch and it says I'm required to pick a weapon type. I go make a copy of the Vorpal Sword and then edit everything to the item I was making and hit save and it tells me the same thing. In the drop down menu there's no broader category to use. So how can I make something that has a varying weapon type but the builder doesn't even allow it? How is it able to be done with things like Vorpal Swords and Holy Avengers and other similar items? Any help?
Also still I can't get the entire language description on a background I was making. What is the character limit or is there a way around it? Anything further beyond what I have now gives me an Internal Server Error and a zombie beholder.
Currently DnDBeyond doesn't have a way to create a weapon that is not based on the current D&D weapon types - and a single weapon type at a time at that. So you would have to make versions of your weapon for each existing weapon type to accomplish what you're asking.
so, not sure if this is the place, but I'm building a paladin on the website, and would like to give him a custom oath... is there some way to do that?
And I'm not sure what the issue is for the language text you're having issues with trexdrew.
I suggest creating a custom subclass by copying an existing subclass and adjusting things to make your own.
This will also help you see how they've build these subclasses.
ok, will try
Oh lord ok that's a lot of work I guess I'd just make them as needed
For vorpal sword and the rest, they create a separate item for each base weapon.
Once you’ve got one made, you should be able to just copy it and switch the base weapon.
At a certain point I can't add a single character past what I have in the box or it crashes and gives me an internal server error. If there is a better way to show you what's going on I'd love to provide it. Maybe a screen recording on my phone if allowed?
That was going to be my plan yeah
Yeah, if you’ve got a video we can pass it along for the team to take a look.
Sure let me grab a screen cap that fits in the discord limits to files and I'll post it in just a second
So in the video you can see that I'm at the absolute limit of characters in that text box. If I type even a three letter word it crashes completely. I have no idea what's going on but I can't finish the text with the rest of it.
Just to check: do you get the same problem in another browser, or on another device?
Yes it happens to chrome, safari, and opera GX on both desktop and mobile
Unlikely to be a local issue, then.
I’ll pass this on and see if I can get any answers.
Please and thank you! It’s just so strange
Oh and please do update me on any info you might get. Either tag me here or just DM me, both work just fine.
Will do!
Hello there!
I've taken a bit of a hiatus from the ddb site for about a year now and I wanted to re-download the Theros race pack which I've bought in 2020. But all I can see is my order history and not the actual files. Any idea on how I could get access to that again?
You will have to download the Theros book on the app, which contains the race options you purchased. Although you only purchased part of the book, the app needs the whole source downloaded
Is there any way to get it on pc as a pdf?
No, D&D beyond does not provide pdfs.
The only offline content we support is the ddb app
Ah I see, sorry for being a bit thick. Is the app available on pc too or is it only a mobile thing? Also can I at least access the content from the ddb site itself?
since if I go to the Theros sourcebook in the compendium all I see is this
Android and iOS only I'm afraid
Yeah, there's no download option on the site. You'll want to go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
D&D Beyond
Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Fifth Edition (5e) Races. A comprehensive list of all official character races for Fifth Edition.
Thank you! This helps out a bunch ^^
I want to purchase volos guide to Monsters via dndbeyond app but it somehow doesnt register that i added my money on googleplay.
That would be a problem with the google play store rather than D&D Beyond
If the funds you've added to your google play account aren't registering, you'll need to contact them
Hey Can anyone help me with creating a hombrew subclass?
i have a lot of trouble with it
What part specifically do you need help with?
how about oll of it
but it keeps saying that this subclass does not have the necessary class features with the correct required levels" and idk what to do there
Which class are you designing for?
This thread can help you with that one:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/23242-creating-subclasses-guide
just an Arcane trickster for the rouge since i do not have the money for the source books
There is a nice quick reference here that shows which levels you need features for, for each class: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/23242-creating-subclasses-guide. Druid is an interesting one due to the Circle of the Land requiring you to have a 3rd-level feature (which can just be blank)
A Rogue should have features at levels 3, 9, 13, and 17.
Also, once you have added every feature, be sure to click Save from the main subclass page. This forces the auto-check
yeah i already checked the thread but it doesn`t help me
One other important note, though:
Those validation warnings only apply if you're attempting to publish your homebrew for community use.
However, you can only publish your own original creations.
If you're rebuilding Arcane Trickster, it should not be published, and you can safely ignore those warnings.
yeah no i don`t want to do that only for myself
Have you clicked Save on the subclass main page after creating your 3rd, 9th, 13th, and 17th-level features?
and i also want to give that subclass a spellcasting abuility like the normal one
As long as you create the ability called Spellcasting, it will automatically be granted at that level
Make sure you set these fields under Basic Information as well:
or is it possible to put a spellcasting abullity on an existing Hombrew subclass
Yes, it is. Although there is no control over spellcasting table, it's automatically applied depending on the base class. As long as you fill out the information that spamandtuna screenshotted above, if you include a feature called Spellcasting, the character will have everything automatically granted according to the class spell progression table. You can also give a character Pact Magic, although I haven't experimented enough to know how it works with every class. Since I know the Profane Soul blood hunter Pact Magic progression differs from warlock
IIRC, "Spellcasting" vs "Pact Magic" still works the same, depending on the class.
ICYMI, you can also buy just that subclass instead of the whole book, if that's easier.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining price of the book itself, too.
But to get the spellcasting you need, it's just those four things:
- Set "SPELL CASTING ABILITY" to "INT"
- Set "CAN CAST SPELLS" to "Yes"
- Set "KNOWS ALL SPELLS" to "No"
- Add a Class Feature called "Spellcasting"
Whenever someone is able or not busy, could they answer a question for me? I'm new to D&D Beyond and have a Homebrew/Subscription question.
Just pop the question in here, and we'll be here to help!
Thank you Halfwing!! So I'm helping run a FFXIV campaign and I see that I'll need Homebrew... everything! I realize though, I'll need a subscription to use other peoples Homebrews, unless I make them myself? My main concern is, how can I share Homebrews with my friends (I'll be using Avrae) if I do end up purchasing a subscription? Will they need a subscription as well? Or should I just create my own Homebrews?
Any homebrew in your collection (whether you created it or added it through a subscription) gets shared with your campaign automatically.
There might be extra steps to get it all working in Avrae, though.
Particularly for homebrew spells, items, and monsters.
Omg.. thank you for this info, that helps a lot- for some reason I couldn't find a basic (any homebrew is shared with your campaign) or else I'm just silly and overlooked it!!
I'll be sure to try getting it to work with Avrae but I'm happy knowing it's added, sub or not! You have been a wonderful help!! 🙏
We've got #ddb-avrae-help as well if you need a hand there. 🙂
AHH!! Thank you! I just joined so I didn't even notice!! ❤️
Welcome to the fun, then!
When I select Warlock from the 'Games Rules / Spells list one of the Spells 'Armor of Agathys' does not show on the list of spells., yet when I go an look at All spells, it does show as a 1st level spell available for Warlock. It just doesnt show when using the Warlock as a Filter.
They're ordered first by spell level, and then alphabetically.
Is it there if you scroll down to the 1st-level spells?
NvM, found it now
This isn't currently supported in the homebrew modifiers. The best way to give this to your players would be to have them track it manually
This has come up a bunch in my experience. There's nothing official that grants a flat HP bonus, and so no such modifier exists. The closest thing is something like the Tough feat, but that is tied to extra HP per character level, not just a flat bonus
That said, I suspect they’ll need to add one for the upcoming Boon support.
Whether or not that would also work with items remains to be seen.
If it's part of the larger Generic/Universal Features System, hopefully it would! 🤞
There is a new system in development that aims to make the creation of new material much easier on D&D Beyond, for both the DDB team and by extension the users that create homebrew. Regardless, no current modifier exists to grant this type of HP bonus
Is there a RAW item that just gives +1 to all damage rolls?
Not a weapon, but an item that affects your damage
I don't think so
espacially not both melee and spellcasting damage rolls
you can use +1 weapons and wand of the war mage as magical alternative
Or else customize the attacks manually
Do I ask about homebrew questions i.e how to and limitations in this chat?
#homebrew would probably be your best bet.
Thank you
Does anyone here know how to add a roll table to a spell in the DNDBeyond Homebrew Creator?
The easiest way is to just copy and paste it in from another spell.
Otherwise you need to click the Source button </> in the toolbar and add it in through HTML.
I was trying but I can't for the life of me remember any spells that use a table lol
Conjure Animals has one.

I'm having a scarce time trying to find people to start my first ever dnd session and I'm not sure where to reach?
You can use the #750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players channels to find a game. Be sure to read the pinned post in each to learn how to use the channels.
So I ran into this problem myself with a subclass I was making for Druid and it didn’t have a LV 3 feature. Is that true if I just make something blank and click the “hide” buttons it’ll work?
It really frustrated me at the time because Circle of the Moon doesn’t have a LV 3 feature and works just fine on DDB but a LV 3 feature is required. It made no sense at the time but I didn’t think to just make a blank feature at the appropriate level.
The homebrew system is designed off the free subclasses from the basic rules - thus for Druids it functions off the Land Druid, not the Moon Druid. The land druid gains spells from level 3 onwards, thus has a level 3 feature.
Yes you can do a blank feature at that level and hide it in the sheet and builder.
Very interesting thank you for the insight
How do I add "damage advantage" to a weapon on dnd beyond?
I doubt it's possible lmao
Answered in #ddb-avrae-help
I might have missed it but I can't find a high-quality blank version of the DDB PDF character sheet anywhere. I have been using it for a while and I am hoping to print a bunch of them for a game at camp. Is there a high-quality/printable version of the sheet anywhere on the website?
the DDB PDF is just the one provided by WotC, basically
You can find it in the last section of the character builder, by clicking "Export as PDF"
he needs a blank one.
oh also, grats on mod status, Jace
It's editable. And thanks!
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll clear all of my character's info and use that.

Hi I got another question with the dnd beyond link with discord
How do I make this even
Like my character got pictures and everything but my friends didn’t
Have they properly linked Discord to their account, and are they using any addons in the browser, notably ones that link to VTTs, as they do break the website and will need to be disabled to function properly.
You might also have them try deleting and re-linking their characters in Avrae
Oh god not again 🤦♂️
Oh no! Same problem as before? Well... You know the drill 😅 "Have you tried turning it off and back on again?"
They need to make sure they've linked the character (using the !beyond <URL> command) and set that as their active character using the !char set command
Thanks, fixed
I have a problem with sharing character sheets (sharable link, not the pdf version) from ddb. Whenever the recipient clicks on the link provided they get a message saying they’re no longer logged in and can’t view the sheet.
How can I resolve this?
Perhaps a silly question, but is the person you're sending the link to logged in?
Not a silly question at all, some of them doen’t even have accounts, but even those who have can’t view the sheet even when logged in.
Also: the sheets are “public” so I thought they could be viewed by anyone regardless of being logged in or not
That was my next question 😄 Would you mind sharing the link here, so one of us can have a look?
pulled up just fine for me, @wanton shard
Yes, I'm seeing the character just fine as well. If it's only certain players that are seeing this error, I'd recommend having them try disabling any browser extensions that may be interfering (Beyond20, AboveVTT, any VPNs or ad-blockers) and trying again. Also trying in a different browser or in an Incognito browsing window (that they've logged into DDB with).
This is what my friends see
What about those who don’t have a ddb account - the sheets were visible for them up until just recently.
Hmm. Let me see if I can find an answer for you about whether this has changed recently... In the meantime, are they able to view the link if you send the regular character sheet URL, and not the shareable link generated from the side menu?
And this is the group of them that are logged in?
Yes for some reason even the ones who’re logged in
Even logged in in their current Incognito browser?
Regular URL changes nothing sadly
Some of them aren’t that tech-savvy, can’t expect incognito browsers. Default iphone/android browsers only I suppose 😅
Mmm, lack of tech savviness makes this slightly more difficult... I'm simply wondering whether any of them are able to clear their browser cache and try again
It's difficult trying to nail down this stuff when performing tech support while so removed. Especially since I can't reproduce the issue myself! I'm logged in and can see the character sheet, but viewing it while logged out makes it so I can't
That's the only difference I'm able to spot
Hello, i have a problem with the D&D Beyond Twitch Extension , it doesn't update the value of our HP
Hi Denki! Similar concerns have been brought to the team in recent weeks; the current update speed appears to be related to server-side caching, meaning you should see updates every ~15 minutes or so at present.
Ok thanks for the fast answer! Will this be updated in future ? :)
That's a good question, and one I'm not qualified to answer! I do know that the proper people have seen the request. Outside of that, D&D Beyond does not give ETAs; keep an eye peeled on future Dev Updates!
Thanks a lot i'll keep an eye on it! And have a nice day! :)
Hi! Do you know how to add axiomatic properties to homebrew weapons? I've added one from the homebrew section and got something in a campaign that would add those properties. I'm not seeing any options in the customization area. Thanks!
What do you mean by 'axiomatic properties'?
We just finished the lighthouse mission in acquisitions incorporated, and there's an axiomatic weapon reward. I thought that it was a plugin to my existing weapon, so I was looking for a customization option. Now I see it's a new weapon, but still trying to find where the options are to create it. Let me paste in what it says in the book
I'm trying my hand at creating some homebrews but unable to get them add to my D&D Beyond account correctly to get all the features to come up. Can I please get some help.
||Modron in Need||
||The pentadrone Stevie wants to travel back to Mechanus, and the characters could assist by using downtime or franchise tasks to make that happen. Research or schmoozing might gain information from knowledgeable sages regarding existing portals to Mechanus, or unique rituals that can open a temporary portal.
If the characters are successful in helping Stevie get home, the pentadrone thanks them by removing components from itself that reassemble to function as an axiomatic weapon, a rare magic item that requires attunement. When an attuned wielder hits a chaotic-aligned creature with this weapon, the target takes 1d6 extra damage of the weapon’s type.||
There currently isn't a way to automatically roll the extra weapon damage (either in general or against a chaotic-aligned creature), but you can create a custom action on the character sheet that will deal the proper amount of damage, in the event that you hit a chaotic-aligned creature with the weapon.
Awesome! I'll see if I can figure it out. Thanks!
Could you elaborate more on what problems you're facing? If you have some extensive work to do (rather than quick help with a specific modifier), it might be better that we hold a discussion over in #homebrew, otherwise we'll certainly try to help
I got all the concept down and everything is just that whenever I go to put it on the website I'm not sure what goes into what spot
If you're looking for help explaining what every part of the homebrew builder does, there's a quite thorough guide here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/76031-demystifying-homebrew-updated-with-spells
Hey on the combat tracker, is there a way to make it default to roll to everyone instead of Self?
For monsters, specificallyt.
Yes! If you open the game log on the combat tracker page, at the top there is an option (right under Game Log) to change Send to (Default) from Self to Everyone
omg you're a life saver. been driving me crazy
Another great way to learn is to select one of the official entries as a template when you create your homebrew. Then you can dig in, see exactly how they set it all up, and adjust it as needed.
But if there’s a specific part your stuck at, we can point you in the right direction, too. 🙂
I think that's good for right now I was trying to get something set up to where they have to choose between three skills and gain expertise and one of those skills but it wasn't letting me do it so I'll look at it and see how is setup
If you have access to the Skill Expert feat from TCOE, that would be a good one to check.
What kind of homebrew is this for, though? Feat? Subclass? Magic item?
is there any way to set source limitations on random characters? I want to limit to PHB and Ebberon only.
At the moment, no. I'll pass this along, though!
i am kinda new to online dnd and i do not know what to do
There are a number of excellent introductory materials pinned in #dnd-discussion. If you take the time to go through those, you should get a good overview of what D&D is and how to play it. The YouTube series Handbooker Helper is another good one! The basic rules are also available for free on D&D Beyond (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules). Once you're to the point where you think you're ready to get started but don't have a group all ready to jump into, there are DMs looking for players in #looking-for-players, you're welcome to post with the pinned format in #750812887697588356, and the community here is generally happy to help you build your first character in #character-discussion. If you have any more questions, head on over to #dnd-discussion! 🙂
thanks
thank you. this would really help for those meat grinders
So can anyone help me get around the dnd beyond way of the kensei
What do you mean by "get around"? Are you trying to use it correctly? Homebrew it yourself?
So I was wondering why out of all the ranged wapones you cant chose a gun
And if there's a way to get around it
Firearms are kind of their own special separate category. You should be able to either make a homebrew copy of the subclass and add the firearms to the feature (I think, I haven't tried this myself), or else customize the attacks (either the weapon itself or by creating custom actions on the character sheet) to represent what you'd get from making them a kensei weapon.
It looks like there's no way to homebrew the firearms in. The best course is probably to just leave the ranged weapon choice unselected, manually add firearm proficiency (since you'd gain proficiency with the type of firearm you chose as a kensei weapon), and otherwise customize the action if required.
I sent off a message to try and regain access to online account. Who can I PM to get help with logging back in?
What happens when you try to log in?
is there any way to make weapons like the longsword use a stat other than strength, for example what the hexblade gets, to use charisma, is there a way to add that onto existing weapons, preferably automatically
For hexblade specifically, you can click on the weapon and open the Customize menu in the sidebar. There will be an option to mark it as your hex weapon, which will automatically use your CHA.
Alternatively, you can use the same menu to manually adjust the To Hit and Damage bonuses as needed.
hey guys, for an item im making rn, im trying to add the proficiency modifier of the character to unarmed attacks
i've made a modifier on the item, the modifier type is damage, the modifier subtype is unarmed attacks and the additional bonus types is proficiency bonus
but it doesn't seem to apply on the character sheet
do any of you know what im doing wrong?
Is there a way to take over ownership for a character who's player has left my campaign in DnDBeyond?
No, not if they've left. If you can still contact them, ask them to unassign the character sheet in the DDB campaign if it's still there.
Okay, thanks.
Hi! How do I create a dragon character?
Do you mean a dragonborn?
not dragon-born or folk, I mean like fing dragon
That's not possible within the official 5e rules, so there is no way to do it on DDB. If you wish, you may try to use DDB's homebrew tools to do it, though I think it unlikely that a DM would allow that, so be sure to check with them first.
your best bet is Dragonborn Sorcerer: Draconic Bloodline
all the dragon-ness
You could potentially use Custom Lineage with one of the Draconic Options UA feats to make a dragon character.
But there’s not an official dragon race. Dragonborn or kobolds are as close as it gets.
But again, you can use the homebrew tools to build any race you want.
cool thanks!
You can also make a homebrew copy of an official race, like dragonborn. Then you can see exactly how it was set up and adjust it as needed.
All- quick question is there a preferred way to get ddb to use + ammo in rolls for a crossbow ?
That is currently unspported.
np thanks
can i recreate hex weapon using a feat?
like, get it to show on the char sheet just like hex weapon does?
also how do i make those boxes you check on the char sheet for uses per day
You can click on your crossbow, open the Customize section in the sidebar, and manually add a to hit / damage bonus there.
If you want it displayed with and without that bonus, you can add a second crossbow with those same customizations, then also change its name and set the weight to zero.
I added a new player and character to my campaign but if I click on the link to the sidebar to view all the players on the character sheet, they don't show up in the list from the other character's sheets
I added them 2 days ago so I don't think its an issue with the campaign page updating
They won't appear in the list if their sheet is set to private
I don’t think you can do the Hex Weapon one, but you can add checkboxes. Just create an Action, select a Reset Type, Save it, then Edit it again. You’ll then find the Limited Use options at the bottom of the page.
davyd said if i ask someone who own the book how its structured maybe i can copy it, i just dont know anyone who could help me now
Yeah, I was looking and didn’t see an answer there.
It might be hard-coded into the site instead, which would prevent it from being recreated for other things.
can someone help me with my movement stat. as a barbarian i should have a lot more but umm its 20 ft right now
Can you post a link to your character sheet?
There are a few reasons why this might be the case. Most likely visible when you click on the character's speed and see more detail
You are heavily encumbered. Carrying too much weight
oh i see
It was set to public
Variant: Encumbrance
The rules for lifting and carrying are intentionally simple. Here is a variant if you are looking for more detailed rules for determining how a character is hindered by the weight of equipment. When you use this variant, ignore the Strength column of the Armor table. If you carry weight in excess of 5 times your Strength score, you are encumbered, which means your speed drops by 10 feet.
If you carry weight in excess of 10 times your Strength score, up to your maximum carrying capacity, you are instead heavily encumbered, which means your speed drops by 20 feet and you have disadvantage on ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws that use Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#LiftingandCarrying
If your DM isn't using this rule, you can turn it off in the character preferences
I see a fair bit of that comes from 2 chests, and an abundance of rations and torches. If you have any sort of cart or pack animals that can share the burden, you can also override the weight of any objects you're not actively carrying to 0
and thats why i say ddb is terribly made when it comes to user freedom on homebrew
also wym, there was nothing refering to hex warior in any of the user usable areas?
I made a homebrew copy of that subclass, and these are the only modifiers there for Hex Warrior:
• Proficiency - Medium Armor
• Proficiency - Shields
• Proficiency - Martial Weapons
Which means it might be keyed off the subclass name or class feature name instead.
im mildly infuriated at this
As for the state of the homebrew system itself, this video offers a lot of insight.
https://youtu.be/0PpDv2zmFhc
im not mad, im just disapointed at ddb
ik my bearings arround the system, it just constantly disapoints me
Remember that D&D Beyond didn't launch with homebrew support, so a lot of stuff was hard coded (rather then form based) because there was no logical reason at the time to make it form based
Check out that video. I think you’ll find it enlightening.
Going through the entire system and changing every single hard coded feature into a form would likely be a bigger undertaking than anything previously done
They talk all about how the homebrew system came about, why it is the way it is, and the things they’d like to improve in the future.
that does not answer any of my questions
I'm not saying it would, I'm explaining why some things are the way they are and why they haven't been changed since then
i wanna know when they plan to do anything if at all about the homebrew support
The video @uneven lantern linked is the most recent information on the homebrew tools
does it cover the near future of them?
It covers as much specificity as can be provided at this time
aigth, yes or no question, are they going to change it in the near future?
D&D Beyond doesn't provide timelines, especially for such a vague period as 'near future'
Update notes on the change log as and when new features and updates roll out
Suffice to say, there are improvements they’d like to make. When those improvements might come has not been shared.
But the weekly Dev Updates are the best way to find out what the team is working on and what’s coming next.
i followed those for a while and i find almost no diference between the subjects talked about, and since they deprecated trello, i cant even filter what migth be of my interest
im confused, ddb says we can add spell lists via feats but i selected the warlock list and it does not work
i am attempting to make epic boons as home brew feats however it dosent work
the current one i made was the boon of fortitude
and i did this
@thorn sandal
Taking a look right now, give me a sec
Okay, I think you may just need to remove the dice count and die type and it should work.
I’m trying to share my characters via link, but it’s not showing up despite the privacy being set to public. This is what’s appearing when we click on the link
Same for the url of the character sheet
Shouldn’t be
Don’t got any on my phone
And I have been checking with the in app browser
Here’s the link
The link works fine for me
Really?
What the heck
Are the people attempting to open the link logged in?
You have disadvantage on perception for proof
Ah, that is a recent update me do thinks
Did they change that?
It appears that something may have changed recently preventing certain sheets from being visible by people that haven't been logged in. It's been brought to the team's attention, but no news yet to report on that front
Gonna leave it to Halfwing from here on out, cheers
Weird
I checked with the other character links I’ve got, but the same thing kept happening. Should I just make a copy of it and sees if that fixes it for now?
It's worth a shot, although I'm not sure personally whether it's only certain character sheets that are affected, or all sheets.
Sorry to hear! For what reason are you sending character sheets to people without accounts?
For dm approval in a pbp server. We use avrae to play, but the sheet links need to be reviewed before using that character
Avrae is still able to read the links though
If it's just a sheet review, you might try generating the PDF and sending that to the DM, in the meantime
didnt work :(
There currently is no way to give a flat HP bonus through modifiers, unfortunately. That will likely be coming with the upcoming generic features system
In the meantime, you can add 40 hit points either through manual override (be sure to uncheck "reset max HP" whenever taking a long rest), or else by turning on manual HP and adding the 40 extra HP from the character builder HP management
Bonus - Hit Points is used for these:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items?filter-type=0&filter-effect-type=1&filter-effect-subtype=192
It’s for items that restore hit points.
However, official support for boons is currently in progress, so that should all be working as expected later this year.
ok ill just skip that one
okay guys. desperate for some help here. Im trying to get a custom attack sorted out, and on my character sheet, the value isnt updating. I have two attacks and one displays the proper to hit value and the other doesnt. both are configured exactly the same way in the Actions setup menu and im poulling my hair out. can anyone offer some advice/tips?
These are both actions that have been set up directly on the character sheet through "Manage Custom" from the Actions pane?
i am currently using the homebrew building a subclass, and i have a character set up to look at the live changes with.
Ah, good. Not good, but I have an answer! Homebrew edits can often take 15-20 minutes to update on character sheets, due to caching. Which means it can be time-consuming editing a single action and waiting for the changes to populate. You might move onto another subclass feature in the meantime, if you have more!
It also helps sometimes if you've waited the 15-20 minutes to bump the character level up and back down, to force a new fetch
Well thats better than learning its not working due to a glitch. Thank you. Trying to put in my custom gunslinger and making it work with this stuff is honestly a bit infuriating (but satisfying when i get it working)
I know what you mean, about the satisfaction of getting something properly set up! 🙂
and just like that, its updated to the new value.... thank you for that info on caching as i had assumed it was live haha
now i can just hope they add the ability to replace in book features so i can get rid of the cleric abilities in the future
or the ability to add classes as a whole
Is the page not working rn?
I'm trying to make a custom axe and it sends me to page not found every time I want to save
Do you have any extensions that may be interfering? Beyond20, AboveVTT, ad-blockers, VPNs...?
Actually yeah, AboveVTT
I have adblock but it's paused in DnDBeyond, so it shouldn't be a problem
It's best to disable that and try again. As a third-party solution that isn't officially supported, it has the possibility of causing abnormal website functionality
Okay, I'll give it a try. Thx
Okay. I have another question. I am trying to add a +1 to damage rolls with ranged weapons. I have this set as piercing in the modifier tab in homebrew, but it does not seem to add the modifier when i roll with a custom or vanilla weapon that does piercing damage. The bonus that I have applies as it should, but not the extra damage
What kind of homebrew is this? And what modifier did you use?
a custom gunslinger, and i have it set as Damage>Piercing>+1
So a subclass, then?
I can at least confirm that Damage - Piercing won’t do the trick.
That’s used for things like these magic items that deal extra piercing damage for their own attacks.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items?filter-type=0&filter-effect-type=2&filter-effect-subtype=55
If you can find some official content that has that effect, you can make a homebrew copy of it to see how it works.
The Archery fighting style only applies to the attack roll, not damage. Bracers of archery only boost the damage of longbows and shortbows specifically…
@uneven lantern (sorry if im not supposed to @ you but i went to eat dinner) i have tried adding the Bonus: Magic +1 to it and will see how that works, its the same thing added to the ammo+1. If that doesnt work i'll keep trying to find something
That one’s for magic weapons, and adds the Fixed Value to both the attack and damage rolls for that weapon.
it also doesnt seem to work for custom stuff added in as well. so back to the drawing board again haha
it works for my dagger, not my custom added revolver
Yeah, not every modifier works in every scenario.
By and large, the system was designed to support the official rules, so each one usually has a specific use case.
And it’s often a matter of figuring out which ones tie to which rules, then working backward from there.
well.. a strange work around could be to create the revolver as a type of homebrewed shortbow, set those values accordingly, and then rename everything
That could actually work, yeah.
Or if this is for private use anyway, you can just manually add those bonuses to your revolver right on the character sheet.
it is for private, and i try adding that to the revolver, but it doesnt seem to take. Am i right in trying to add it to the Fixed Value beside the 1D8 attack blocks?
No, for the homebrew you’d just put the text description. No modifier at all.
and just add it manually?
Then add a revolver to your character sheet, click on it, and open the Customize section in the sidebar.
oh i see what youre saying
You can manually add weapon bonuses there.
is there a way to grant extra range on weapons via feats?
If you’re adding a set number of feet, like a bugbear:
Modifier Type: Bonus
Modifier Subtype: Melee Reach
Fixed Value: 5 (or any other number of feet)
If you want it to scale, kind of like spell sniper:
Modifier Type: Bonus
Modifier Subtype: Weapon Attack Range Multiplier
Fixed Value: 2 (if you want to double the normal range)
reliable as always, thanks!!
just say it all in one message, don't flood the chat with sentence fragments.
....but continue.
Ah my bad. Anyhoo, for the Samurai's level 3 bonus proficiency, I chose Persuasion. But before chosing it, my modifier was +3 as I had 16 CHA. After obtaining the bonus proficiency and chosing it for Persuasion, shouldn't the modifier be +6?
Level 6 by the way
...hm... standby, lemme check a thing
what is it now?
It's still +3
no, he's level 6. he multiclassed.
Actually, I didn't multiclass. I'm Fighter/Samurai
Fighter, Samurai
...regardless, post a link to your character sheet and let me take a look. I may not be a mod, but long as it's public, I should be able to see the numbers.
...why is that number blue...
Which number?
You have an override in the Persuasion skill
I see
I was literally about to ask if there was an override somewhere.
What do I do to fix that
click on the Persuasion skill. unless Sorce wants to take over
What Neut said!
And do I reset the override to 0?
you overrode it, so just, erase the override
currently you're locking it to be +3 no matter what
so you just wanna remove the thing saying it's only +3
You might want to refresh, it's not displaying as blue when I load the sheet
you're good. 👍
Thanks a lot fellas, you guys are champions. 💪
Heh. try to be.
I did a custom background but it doesn't seem to actually show anything I selected on the sheet.
apparently it does the Homebrew caching problem. give it 15 minutes
Juuuuuust one more thing. You guys use Avrae? How do I cast bonus action, like Fighting Spirit or Second Wind. What's the command for that
I gave it 3 days. But I'll see 🤔
there isn't. Avrae doesn't natively support class features. However, if you use the !level and !class Alias from Verbose Character Tools, it will automagically create counters to track it!
I can give you the link to the workshop for Verbose, one moment

Aliases for setting up counters based on levels (!level) and race (!setrace), along with managing additional cvars (!manage) for display on !vsheet, and also !vsheet.

It shows my skill proficiencies now and Land Vehicles, but still not Sea/Air Vehicles 🤔
Sea/Air Vehicles isn't a proficiency that exists in D&D.
We added it accidentally, due to a mistaken reference to it in one of the Eberron books, but have since removed it almost everywhere.
Unfortunately it still pops up here and there, as fully removing it would break some existing homebrew.
so you're telling me that House Agent Lyrandar is meant to be Sea and Air Vehicle proficiencies, not Sea/Air as one?
also hi Stormy.
There are two vehicle proficiencies:
- Land Vehicles
- Water Vehicles
I can't speak on behalf of Wizards of the Coast. If they issue an errata for that, we'll change it up. I do know that we're told Sea/Air is not a valid proficiency.
and hi 🙂
Aberrant Mind Sorcerer can change one of their Psionic spells with another from a different class. Is there a way to do this in DDB?
Homebrew the subclass.
Yeah, currently that option isn't natively supported
The current best workaround is to copy the subclass as homebrew and edit the spells
Gotcha, thanks
But the team is aware of the need for a native solution
is it just me or is the DnD beyond page down? i can't get access to my characters.
I'm having no trouble personally, at the moment. Are you logged in? Interfering extensions (Beyond20, AboveVTT) disabled?
Yes i'm logged in, and none of those enabled... 😦
And are you navigating to the characters from Collections > My Characters and clicking on the character? What sort of error are you getting?
Yes, but once i click My characters it shows a clean page with Create a characterand even that doesn't work
I'm not sure why Create a Character wouldn't be working... But have you by chance accidentally logged in with a different method? It may be very likely, given that your characters section is completely blank... If you've purchased anything in the past, and you go to your Account page, does it show your past purchases?
Yes i can see my past purchases, my annual plan, and all the sources i bought
Do you have any other extensions or software that may be interfering? Ad-blockers, VPNs, or the like? Have you tried logging in using a different browser, or an Incognito browser session?
There you go, it was Ad-block, but i always have my ad-block on and it worked just fine before... thanks a lot for the help i really appreciate it.
No problem! 🙂
I’m trying to alter the profane soul blood hinter subclass by changing the int spell casting modifier to charisma but now it says I can’t learn any spells
So for the encounter builder, is there a plan for it to have 'macros' like the character sheets where you can click on something and it will roll stuff for you?
combat tracker
ohhh I see, dang you need a sub for that, is that just in Alpha?
The combat tracker is in alpha, so it's subscribers only
However, you can roll for monsters from the encounter builder and (if you've selected a campaign to build the encounter against) they'll appear in the game log
I see, thank you!
Hi, follow on question, where exactly do I go to roll in the encounter builder? I click on the monster and I don't see anything that I can roll with.
Lemme check something quick
My apologies, I just checked the update notes and that feature is currently in alpha, even in the (in beta) encounter builder
Sorry for giving you the wrong info
Yeah, it's currently available for subscribers only (like the encounter builder).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/changelog/966-monster-dice-rolling-for-the-encounter-builder
Once it moves into beta, it will be available for everyone.
assuming I've already considered the balance implications around this: is there a way for a magic weapon to grant expanded crit range within the DDB homebrew system? I totally understand that I can just put it in the description, but is there a way to make rolls reflect this?
There is not yet a way for digital dice rolls to automatically account for expanded crit ranges.
But you can manually roll a crit if you right click or long press on the damage box.
thanks!
I'm creating a custom magic item. The item allows the character to make one extra attack whenever they take the attack action on their turn (so a level 5 fighter with the item can make 3 attacks with their action instead of the typical 2)
Is there a way to include this modifier in DnDBeyond's homebrew creator? There's a similar effect in official DnD content, so I was hoping there would be something, but I can't find it.
There is a modifier, but I’m not sure whether it will work for your case.
Type: Bonus
Subtype: Extra Attacks
Fixed Value: 2
That will allow whoever equips it to make two extra attacks (for a total of three).
But I think if there’s more than one of that modifier (like with a fighter), the system probably just takes the biggest number.
They wouldn’t stack.
is death saving throw proficiency not on the list of available things to add to homebrew races?
I don't know which official race has that, but presuming one does I'd look at it to see how it was done.
so how do you use your dice on the mobile version
also my character is in a campaign but I cant see the log
on mobile only
regular web version is fine
Sounds like you might need to turn on dice rolling first. Open up your character sheet, tap on the character portrait, and select My Dice from the menu. Make sure “Enable Dice” is turned on.
I dunno about races, though I know it's a monk base class feature
level 11 or so, I think?
Hai! I’m new here and wanted to ask a question about dnd beyond: if i get a subscription then it means i still have to buy sourcebooks individually because i’m assuming there aren’t any for free with the subscription?
ah, level 14 - Diamond Soul: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/monk#DiamondSoul-241
Beginning at 14th level, your mastery of ki grants you proficiency in all saving throws.
Additionally, whenever you make a saving throw and fail, you can spend 1 ki point to reroll it and take the second result.
Correct. Neither subscription unlocks any paid game content, but the Master Tier subscription does let you turn on content sharing for up to five campaigns. That lets everyone in the group share their purchased game content with each other.
Oh cool!
If i lose my subscription what happens to the characters i have and campaigns (over 6)?
you choose 6 to keep unlocked, the others will lock until you either go under 6, or resubscribe.
So if someone made like 100 characters, then they have to delete all of them until they get 6?
If they do not resubscribe, yes.
but if you know that you aren't going to resubscribe any time soon, you can export all of the characters to PDFs first, for easier reference should you choose to reopen some character slots.
When your subscription ends, all of your characters will be locked (not deleted)
You will be then given 6 unlock credits so you can keep access to 6 of your characters
The rest of your characters will be locked and inaccessible
If you resubscribed, all your characters will be unlocked
Thank you
Here is as good a place as any
Although to preface that: The site issues that you may have experiences a few minutes ago were the regular maintenance period. Typically happens for a few minutes this time of day, and I noticed it myself a few minute ago. Seems to be over by now
Many thanks @wanton shard ... it sorted itself out just as I was prepping NPC's etc 🙂
Is the list of Domain Spells not meant to show up? I get them added to my spells correctly but I can't actually see what the list of Domain Spells is
Where are you looking for these to be visible? On the character sheet? In the builder?
Hmm. Let me check on a Light cleric, it's possible that feature is accidentally hidden. Do you see anything in the Features & Traits section of the character sheet?
No, but I'll send a screenshot of it too
I know the Twilight cleric has domain spells listed, because that's the character I just pulled up
Yes, interesting, it looks as though many of the older cleric domains don't list the Domain Spells as a feature in the builder or sheet. I'll pass this along 🙂
Thanks
Drow Weapon Training racial feature doesn’t appear in the character builder when you pick Drow
The list cuts off at Drow Magic, and you can swap out the Weapon Training just fine with TCoE Customize Your Origin option, but it doesn’t show up as a base feature listed on the character builder.
Thanks for the report! I'll pass that along.
Is anyone else having issues with character portraits not showing up on the sheets?
I see my character's portrait in my character list, but not on the sheet. And no portrait is showing up for other character sheets.
Others can see theirs, however.
The above is the campaign list from the character sheet.
There's always a chance that this is a result of some interference by an extension (Beyond20, AboveVTT, ad-blockers, VPNs, etc.). If none of those are the culprit, try clearing your cache and cookies. Some have reported that clearing their cookies fixed the issue. (The team is already aware that some users are experiencing this)
Okay. I'll try that. Thanks.
is there by chance a time line of planed updates forthe site and avrie bot ?
Neither DDB nor the Avrae team give timelines on their planned updates. Updates are announced when they are complete, rather than when they should be complete.
ah
ddb mobile app says i’m being “shared” Tasha’s & Xanathar’s? yet i don’t own either one and the only “campaigns” i’m in are ones i’ve created
Is content sharing enabled in either of those campaigns?
And have other people been invited into those?
If so, it’s likely one of them purchased those books.
You can learn more about content sharing here:
https://dndbeyond.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115011257067-Campaign-Content-Sharing-and-You
My DDB account is linked to an Apple account, but I just inherited an old iPad and the DDB app doesn't offer the option to log in with an Apple ID. Is there a limit to the number of times a user can change their linked account?
There’s no limit.
You can also have a sign-in from each provider attached to the same account.
So you can add a Google or Twitch log-in and still keep your Apple one, too.
You can handle all that here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/account
But unless your old iPad also has an old version of the old app, it should allow for Apple sign-in there.
They added that sometime last fall, IIRC.
Apple ID requires a certain iOS version to be available
Thank you. Do you know if there's a way to download the old compendium app? The tablet runs an old OS. The only app I see in the store is the DDB Player app, pre-consolidation. Thoughts?
so if it is an older device you wont be able to use Apple ID (thats an Apple restriction, not a D&D Beyond restriction)
I am hoping the compendium app is still available so that I can read my adventures without my desktop.
It would be the same on the old Reader app - if you arent running iOS 13 or higher oin the iPad, the Apple ID login is unavailable
the iOS is stopping it - it has nothing to do with the app
Also, the old reader app is decommissioned - anyone who has it installed may find it works (but ive alreayd seen users with issues with some sourcebooks not opening because of lack of updates).
We do not support the old app anymore
Yeah it's iOS 12. Thank you for the background info! I appreciate all your help.
Hey all! I'm kinda new in DnD and in the moment I would like to try the Divine Soul option.
I got the Xanatar book but I just can't find the option to do one, how do I get there?
(Sorry if I misspeled something, english is kinda new to me)
Did you purchase the full book or just the compendium?
Full Book!
When you go to create a Sorcerer, you should be able to select it under Sorcerous Origin.
With the app, I do not know if it changes anything
@uneven lantern Can't find it. 😦
When I click on it it just says what a mage does
Just to confirm, you're trying to create a new character using the Divine Soul option, correct?
Yes! A human!
Cool. So in the mobile app, you can go to the Characters tab. Then you should see a "Create New Character" button at the bottom.
Ok, going there!
You probably want Standard character creation.
The first page is your character settings. You can probably skip past that for now.
Second page is Race, where you can choose Human.
Ok, just get there!
Third page is Class. Pick Sorcerer first and hit Add Class, then find the Sorcerous Origin box and pick Divine Soul.
It got jusr Hit Points, Proficiencies, Spellcasting and Acarne Recovery
just*, Sorry, my english is horrible
Arcane Recovery is a wizard feature, not a sorcerer.
OHHH, That's explain a lot
Pick this one
Where can I hide my face around here?
Oh, no need. Translations are tricky!
It is here! Thank you very much!
oh bloody come on I thought everything is good now but when the game start it all gone..........
@earnest bloom Do you have a problem someone can help you with?
let see ...mr. Halfwing know I think he respond to my problem
The issue you were having with Avrae?
is there anywhere where i can find people to play with that are around my age?
While we can't guarantee age (sharing personal information such as age is against server rules), we do have #750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players
If you're going to post in either channel, please use the pinned post format
yes avrae and the dnd link
use to be full of pictures and details of rolls
but when the session actually start it's gone just d20 number now
Are you using any extensions on the D&D Beyond end of things?
not to my knowledge
I would verify that, some extensions such as Beyond20, AboveVTT and ad blockers and VPNs can interfere with how the data is sent to discord
Failing that, check that everyone has the right character set as active on avrae
You can see who you've got active with !char
You can see a list of all linked characters with !char list
And you can switch characters with !char change
They also need their DDB and Discord accounts linked. You can use !ddb for instructions or to confirm if they’re already set.
I think I did all of that though
ah
I think I know what the problem
Beyond 20 application
That'll do it, a lot of the time.
but it use to be ok
That'll mess with things a lot
Updates to the extension and/or D&D Beyond can cause the way extensions mess with the site to break things
Beyond20 messes with dice rolls a lot, resulting in some of them not registering as anything other than generic rolls
but come to think of it other player are very new they didn't have beyond 20 though
same issue with me too hmm
I'd suggest having your whole group run through !tutorial beyond to confirm that everything is set up correctly.
Question, how do I add a AC bonus to a non armour item in homebrew
like the cloak of protection
When in doubt, if you're able to access the item in question it's usually best to create a homebrew copy using that item as a template, to see how official items are set up. That being said, the modifier you're looking for is Bonus > Armor Class (fixed value = AC bonus)
(Edit: Sorry, got ahead of myself and added the wrong modifier.)
I have six ddb characters who are all greyed out, and I'm trying to get them to join a "new" campaign. easiest way?
This likely means they're either locked (from a lapsed subscription), or else already in another campaign. In the first case, you would need to either re-subscribe or re-create the characters from scratch. In the latter, you either need to remove them from the first campaign, or else create a copy of the character and join the new campaign with the copy.
hey somebody anybody! when you make a campaign on DDB is there a way to link it to one of the prewritten adventures that you own on the website?
Not really - a campaign, as of right now, is a way to contain character sheets in a group, have notes on the campaign, and provide a shared dice log, and allow content sharing (when enabled).
I know the DnDBeyond devs are working on building a shared play "surface" (whatever that may end up looking like) and perhaps there may be more connections to official published adventure modules.
The dev updates are probably the best way to keep up to date with what's happening and seeing the direction they are going.
Out of curiosity, what would linking an adventure do for you, ideally?
Is there a quick way to make a slightly edited version of someone else's published homebrew?
In this instance a sub-class
Nope
Sorry
Hey! I am leveling my bard up after a dungeon with a sun king! We went from level 5 to level 7, sooo, I need ideas for another 3rd level bard spell ( I have Mass Healing Word and Hypnotic Pattern Already ) as well as a 4th level bard spell. I feel like I need more damage spells than anything, but what do yall recommend ?
This channel is more for technical help with D&D Beyond itself, but the folks in #character-discussion can give you a hand. 🙂
so im making a variant warforged race and having issues making a portion of the race function properly visualy it works but functionality on sheet its not doing what its ment to and its breaking my head to figure it out pic is what i have
but choices dont work as intended
trying to make it s based on ur choice (via class, etc) ude choose your skin type and set the ac based on that instead of wearing armor
but when doing a modifier on the choice for set armor class doesnt quite work or just adding modifiers for bonus doesnt seem to work right not sure what i need to change to just make it act like wearing no, light/medium, heavy armor
it's not armour
it's just a set you may need armor proficiency for
it's not armor, just AC
true got ahead of myself when typing but think i fixed it after ripping hear out cuz it just bonus ac with no modifiers setting it for example =6 with no mods would set ac to 16 then add dex mod after wich i capped at 2
and that works?
@hollow solstice Have you got a link to the character sheet that you think is broken?
its not much broken, its now more of a reminder that i have to pdf my character sheet every prior level up
most recent character sheet
Can you link to the actual character sheet on D&D Beyond?
The PDF won't give any information as to what might be wrong
its giving me that invalid authenticator on chrome again
I actually did the same thing, homebrewing the old Warforged, and something I think might be important is adding two different versions of Darkwood because it can't currently find out if you're proficient in it or not so you'll need one for light armor proficiency and one without it
Is there a way to check items, spells, etc without having to actually download all the books?
I have a constant internet connection, but I don’t want to fill up my IPads storage (lot of work stuff on there as well….)
Use the website.
Takes so long……
and personally the mobile website is kinda shit (IMO)
It also defeats the point of the app if I always go for the website anyway
Those are the two options available, as the app is meant to be accessible in situations where people don't have access to the Internet as well as when they do.
The app is not just a weird interface to the website, it is its own contained thing.
I am trying to type this in the FIXED VALUE section for Homebrew race but it won't accept it.
Modifier: Set->Subtype: Unarmored Armor Class->Fixed Value: 3 is not a valid number.
That field is strictly for the number, with no other text. In the drop-down menus above that field, under Modifier you would choose Set, then under Subtype, Unarmored Armor Class
Ah okay. I set it as Bonus.
I believe you would actually WANT to set it using Bonus
Set > Unarmored Armor Class will probably give them a flat 3 to AC
It still gives the same error as before after changing it to set
I'm assuming you're looking to have AC equal 13+DEX?
Hmm. If that's how the Draconic Sorcerer is set up, then yes. It's been a little while since I've done Unarmored AC bonuses, taking me a moment to get things arranged to test for you
Yeah. It does 10 + Fixed Value.
Interesting that it's Set and not Bonus
Set defines a new AC calculation.
Aha
Bonus adds the number to whatever calculation your character is currently using.
We'll see how it goes after making my character with HB race
Yep, that makes sense. Thanks, spamandtuna 🙂 Gotta start flexing my homebrew muscles again
if only robe of the archmagi did the same
But yeah, dex gets added automatically.
If you want to limit / eliminate it, you need another modifier.
What that modifier is, I don't remember off the top of my head. 😅
Set -- Unarmored Armor Class Max Dex Modifier, maybe?
I'd have to double-check the actual name.
I won't probably have that problem. Its always max 20 for dex. Usually
what is this months sub perk
I don’t believe it has yet been announced.
ok
also how does it work
do you get it for every month you are subbed
or the first month
Correct, you get the bonuses every month you are subscribed. I believe all of the information can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/news-announcements/107245-news-announcing-subscriber-perks-june-perks
thank you
Hope this is the right place. While looking at a character the page fails a API check? is anyone else having this issue?
Can you provide a screenshot of the error screen?
I've just refreshed the page, if it happens again I will
Heya, question. So I created a homebrew feat and it is currently in my homebrew collection. However when I click manage feats on a character sheet my homebrew feat doesn't show up. Any way to fix this?
Do you have Homebrew content enabled for that character?
Oh my god, I am so dumb. So sorry for disturbing you with that. It worked, thank you so much!
No worries! I do it myself all the time
Can confirm^
Hi, I have a problem with my Sorcerer. I don't have the option for Metamagic Adept at level 4. I created a brand new character in the same campaign and the option is there. But my existing character doesn't have it as an option
We have TCoE and enabled
You own TCoE yourself, or is it being shared with you?
I own it
also I'm sharing it
This is the new character I created (100% same campaign)
This is my main Sorc
Yeah, if it’s the same campaign and it’s showing for one, it doesn’t sound like a licensing issue.
Can you share a link for the sorcerer’s sheet?
If I go to Features & Traits, it says that character already has Metamagic Adept.
Which at least explains why it’s not showing in the dropdown.
how is that possible? I've just gone to level 4
Can you go to Features & Traits > Feats > Manage Feats and see if it shows in there?
Yeah, looks like it was manually added there.
😐
If you click Remove, you should be able to select it as your ASI instead.
It might be less confusing to show all options in the drop down, but have it checked or grey if already selected?
Hello all! Quick question...Our DM is allowing optional class features. I want to add Warding Bond to my Paladin but I don't have it in my known spells list. Help?
I've got "Optional Class Features" turned on in my preferences. Am I missing something?
You've got to turn it on both on the first page of the editor and then turn on the expanded class list on the class page of the editor
or whichever feature, really
Yeah, on the class page you should see a tab for “Optional Feature Manager”.
Just a quick one if anyone can help? Am I overlooking something, but i can't seem to find forest gnome on DnD beyond. Any help is greatly appreciated, hope you are all well. (side note I am very new to all of this)
@west echo rock gnome is the free gnome. You'd have to purchase the forest gnome to use it on DnD Beyond.
