Then roll defensive flourish for your Bard die roll added to AC
I remember having 30AC as a bard in +1 halfplate.
Cause I rolled max on flourish
Even with no magic items, a warforged in heavy armor and a shield with defence fighting style gets to 22, not to mention shield, shield of faith or Shield or subclass features
theres also beast barb's tail swipe that does a similar thing
Hello.
it also doesnt have a duration listed for the ac boost
Hey Im new here
welcome new member
Hi Im new here, I'm Ti Moth
I believe it's probably till you're done raging.
Hello.
Hey new here, I’m Nugget
Since you get your Beast features during Rages right?
Defensive Duelist for +PB to AC, too
You’re not supposed to keep the “I’m”
I KNOW THAT NOW
:D
Sobbing
How do we play it not like how to play DND like is it through an app or what
Depends on whose running
Ah ok
There's text games.
Voice TotM
Voice + VTT
Bcc I have DND beyond
Ok
i mean, the question is strange because DND and every other TTRPG that exists isn't so much a game with physical pieces as it is a composition of information that doesn't even have to physically exist
it is very cool but that also makes it hard to describe to people who don't already do it
True I have my very own starter pack and I got a dungeon masters guild book off Amazon
Ive was hacked everyone so don't click on any links I may have sent
All you need is a group to play with and some way to communicate. In person, text, voice chat, a virtual tabletop.
the barbarian is going literally blow for blow with an ice troll
Pluh
(hes level 8)
normal trolls are cr 5, that tracks
cr8 ice troll
still tracks a bit
true
Yeah the BPS resistance is huge
update: the paladin got dominated and smited the rogue
the paladin with 24 ac currently
and shield
Rogue as in a player or an NPC?
Because players shouldn't fight each other
they did not pass the saving throw for dominate mind
Oh my bad, I thought of a different thing
"Don't worry you'll dodge all of this" - the paladin about to roll a 30 on the rogue
guys, im in a session right now, and I used Locate Object with "dead body" - and the DM said that I didn't specify dead humanoid body, so the spell located what was presumably a bird. I personally am of the opinion that magic is intent based, and obviously casting Locate Object on "dead body" while investigating someone would be interpreted as my character looking for dead sapients, because literally what else kind of dead bodies would my character be looking for; would that be classified as railroading? obviously I would've specified fricking humanoid body if he was gonna instantly assume that wasnt my freaking target, sorry for rantish
Not railroading, but maybe a DM being a bit of a dork. Was your intent clear before casting the spell?
the situation was the party was talking face to face with a guy we knew was actually evil-evil, and I had a chance to cast it without being, like, "why are you casting"
I mean, I would've assumed so, were in a room with an evil guy and binding contract, but I didn't expressly state humanoid, I just said dead body
Can you ask for a minor retcon, there? If the scene's moved on you might have to take the L and be clearer with the DM about what your character is trying to accomplish before the cast next time.
yeah, we were all forced to sign the contract anyway so we're past it lol, thank u tho!
Hello
dm being mean
but he can absolutely ask u if ur gonna push the door or pull the door
"you push the door with all your might, a stranger passes by and pulls the door open, take 1 psychic damage"
lol yes exactly
I need some input..... one of my campaign members hasn't shown up, and they didn't last time they canceled last minute...... I have known them for years and the campaign is amongst friends but also like people have time constraints and it is like 2 hrs at the most lax that they have been late and at first, we are all chill, we decided to wait but at this point for just this session idk what to do.....
Is the new edition called dnd 5.5e ? Or 5eR
like I could let someone else pilot his PC or have them mindlessly just follow the group?
like I am probably going to need to pull him from the campaign and that is something I will likely do whenever I hear from him next..... but for this session I am kind of at a loss
First of all, talk to him abt it
yeah I plan on it.... the problem is tonight :/
2024,or 5.5e, yes
If he’s unable to, let his PC be present, but you control him. Usually not talking much
Tried calling them?
But yeah, put them in the background, don't involve them, they're just kinda "there" but do nothing, suffer nothing.
yeah I did X/ and I think that is the play at this point...
I mean, he can still be on combats, but you dont have to worry abt him that much he can just do simple actions, that way you dont have to worry abt rebalancing the combats
Oh, just take a goblin out, it's easy.
But speak to him later abt this. You’re putting an effort and everyone’s coming to have fun yk?
Tell him to at least try warning some time earlier
Control him right into a romcom with a questionable townie NPC
Echo is joking
Which Echo is joking
Am I? Am I really?
One lies the other always tells the truth
That one
Out of game problems don't call for in game solutions
There must be an echo around here
At least two.
If there is, I've never seen it
I have heard of it
I wonder if this makes you two
Well yeah, that's how SOUND works
Echo Echo
Alright alright I hear ya
And that’s…..
i wish i got into this sooner in life
Supreme 🗣️
No, you saw me, because that's how TEXT works
It's just an Echo
Now let's go get this missing player's char drunk so when he comes back to the table, he founds out his char got a drunken shotgun wedding to a kobold
Better late than never
also guys should i name my female psuedodragon sunny or sting
Bro dyk that movie scene with the guy awakening into conscience and he’s driving a truck running from the cops and there’s a tied guy who falls on the street?
Imagine he’s coming back but you tell him “Your PC got into a specific scene we’ll have to finish that before you continue” 😂
Hello D&Discord, just here to give you all a goodnight. keeper loves you! keep your valuables safe
So hey, general question, will the new "Ravenloft: The Horrors Within" expansion be official to WOTC and AL or is it more of third-party material?
It's an official publication
yeah, why not
I would like to call mine around some flower, maybe find some photo of some PD with black//red color pattern
I hold the (unpopular) opinion that anything WotC is making money off of in the DNDB Marketplace is fair game.
The new book is officially first party
Thats a perfectly fine way to run your tables
official, will likely get its own AL rules as its setting-specific content
Given that I am the entire table, yes.
I stick to printed offical material only for my games, If it's not worth printing it's not worth buying
I pretty much exclusively buy dnd stuff physically
I'd rather pay £40 to have a physical book than pay £30 for a PDF
I only use official stuff too. If a player of mine is particularly inspired by one of the things in some DDB-only product, I'll hear them out on it. I'm almost always saying no to third-party stuff and homebrew
I'd buy physical books if they shipped here
Same here. It's easier, and I feel like whatever character concept you could possibly have is already covered by the official rulebooks
I still use homebrew, but being pitched "please allow this untested homebrew" is almost never getting the greenlight
You only exclusively play Solo D&D?
I really don't like when my players try to shove homebrew in my face that could quite easily be accomplished by just flavoring a subclass
I'm quite against homebrew for players unless i know exactly what it is i'm allowing
Pretty much
Yeah, and I'm much more comfortable saying "This thing I made isn't working how I'd like, I'm gonna change it." to some stuff I made up rather than some stuff a player pitched to me.
Yeah.
I've had a few players in the past who were allergic to official material and i find it very difficult to accommodate for them
26 for passive perception and investigation. Now nothing can hide from me
Hi am new here were should I start with dnd
Except for anything the DM doesn't want you to spot
Yub
I don't really accommodate at my table regarding character options.
Echo is... scary? amazing? not sure
Is this what my player is aiming for? (as of right now they have 19 passive perception and investigation)
My general rule is that if it's 2024, you can use it. If it's 2014, i'd like to look through it before I confirm, and i'm very hesitant to allow homebrew that isn't my own or i've thoroughly looked through
Ask if they would like to reflavor the official stuff, if they still refuse then kick their ahh
D&D DM Yourselves
D&D The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox
D&D The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox Expanded
Among other things, I use those as tools and advice for solo DnD. Sometimes I use NWN as well and build battle maps, monsters, and my PC(s) in it. Aurora Toolset is very versatile.
My rules are if it's reprinted you use the reprint.
My rules are RAW until it's stupid
Did you took observant and expertise in both?
I had a rogue who wanted to completely redo his cunning strike ability because he just didn't like it and he was a triton so it didn't make sense for him to deal poison damage
I'm also intimately acquainted with NearInfinity for Baldur's Gate 1+2, so I can build adventures and encounters there if I want.
No they just have high wisdom, no observant feat
Coming this fall I'm gonna be able to scratch the 2014 corebooks off my content list.
I now know two people who still play BG1 and BG2
Same. If it hasn't been reprinted, use the old version. If the old version has some incompatabilities, then we'll homebrew together a solution. I have an Astral(5e) Monk (5.5) and we just went through the redundant features and replaced them with similarly powerful features that fit the theme of the subclass.
same, at the end of teh day rules are for make everything work and have fun
Yeah if I had a player that wanted to play Shepard Druid, I'd say "how about no"
I see, the highest one have for perception w/o the feat is 19, yes
Nah but I'd be willing to fix their features.
No it's 21, sorry
Tbf the only 2014 stuff I allow in my games is the expanded rules. I see no reason to use the 2014 core rules, since they're completely reprinted
There's some outlying subs that haven't been reprinted so they're still on my list
Prof Bonus goes up ye
Also the "rogue subclasses" in random books
Double that bonus by espertise
Like Ascendant Dragon Monk and Drakewarden Ranger in Fizban
Or the random 2 subclasses in the 2014 dmg
Giant Barb in AIby
Hello
And Lunar Sorcerer in the Dragonlance adventure
I desperately need the Fizban's and Bigby's subclasses to get a reprint
Lunar Sorcerer is a good call toooo
Reprints can be so disappointing. Daily reminder Shield spell got nerfed into oblivion, used to be a whole 1 Minute / caster level. Now it's a 1 round Reaction.
Lunar Sorcerer I could see when they do a Dragonlance setting guide
-# What an amazing profile!!
But it still good tho
It's actually 23 I think?, 29 if you also have expertise
Since NuWotCs motto is "setting guides? They're kinda sick." Unlike the old which was "boo setting guides. Booo!"
I have a Monk with 25 Wisdom so I think that's why
Not at the cost of a whole spell slot per Reaction to use it
Shield never did that in 5e
What edition was it nerfed from? Both 2014 and 2024 are a 1 round reaction
10 + wis (max 5) + 6(max pb)
Ouh i see
3e, maybe?
Level 20 monks can have more than 20 wis
Yeah that's no surprise.
Ahh i'm not in any way familiar with 3e
Yup
Magic before 5e was an absolute nightmare.
The AC is godly op
Especially in 3.x
It’s still a good spell, one of the best for its level
+5 lasted till the end of your next turn is hella good
Dodge Tank + Shield is good
Up there with Absorb Elements
I echo'ed your words
Can I speak to a Mod i need help
Go to #moderator-support
Not magic missile?
Reaction
Magic Missile is an action.
I'd say for 1st level damage spells, Magic Missile is probably the nicest
Ah i thought we talk abt 1st lv spell in general
Also magic missile is... I mean it's alright, but definitely not the best level 1 spell
I personally prefer guiding bolt
Well, the other issue is Mage Armor doesn't work for my water sorc, and Blade Ward requires Concentration, which interferes with Alter Self, which lets me breathe
Ye but you can miss a guiding bolt.
MM guarantees value which feels nice at those levels.
however, half a fireball is insane single target damage for 1st level
Guiding Bolt is as powerful as it is cause it's one of clerics only damage spells for awhile.
Plus advantage…
Man I love guiding bolt
Command, Dissonant Whispers, and Sleep are my personal favorite level 1 spells
I don't think i've ever seen anyone hit a guiding bolt
But that's because our cleric is really, really unlucky
The bolt didn't guide them
Like it's Guiding Bolt, Inflict Wounds, Spiritual Weapon and Spirit Guardians at 3rd and below. Rest is heals, buffs, debuffs
its a lot of things in one spell, damage, advantage, a good kind of damage
The bolt guided them to a miss
What are yalls favourite spell actually?
Mirror Image
bless
chain lightning
Healing prayer and eldritch blast
I personally am a sucker for Suggestion
Depends on my mood
Suggestion is an amazing spell
But high level spells, Ravenous Void. The own name its good for me
What would yall say would be the best 3 Battle Master Maneuvers for a ranged fighter
Phantom steed and leomund hut
Revenge storm is another good
Parry, Riposte, and Bait and Switch if you have a buddy with you
Is there a suffocation spell similar to Darth Vader's force choke?
If disarming strike works with a ranged weapon like I remember, it’s one of the top three
I like augury, scrying, speak with animals, PW:K and fireball
Galder's Tower would be my favorite spell.... if it wasn't locked exclusively to Wizard spell lists
I don't think it is, but if that's the case then definitely take that!
Cleave
So I have a question if someone could help with. Im joining a group and the system we are using will be 2014. So I was thinking of playing a druid for wildshape (ive never played a druid before).. but they are giving us a free uncommon magic item. And was looking up items that would help. And 2 popped out at me, but not sure if they would work while in wildshape... the items are...
- Insignia of claws
- Eldritch claw tattoo
If anyone could let me know if they work while in wildshape I would appreciate it.
Mordenkainen's magnificent mansion has a funny name but i've never cast it
I’d say closest is Hold person/Hold Monster
claw tat wouldnt work in wild shape
Hold person ig, without the choke
Also, Galder's Tower being exclusively Wizard is utter nonsense since all of Galder's other spells can be used by any Arcane casters.
Not really
There's no spell that chokes people.
Darn, that would be kinda cool.
Meteor swarm, I keep a mug of 20d6 ready at all times
How do you all imagine Hold Person/Hold Monster? I personally thought the caster was forming an invisible hand to "hold" the person in place
So the insignia would work?
Melf doesn't get enough love either. The wizards get all the named spells
Homebrew one. Summons an ancient dragon.
I imagine it as the signals to your brain that make your body move are cut off temporarily and you can't move.
That's a good one
Being introduced to d&d by bg3, I imagine a bunch of spectral chains come and wrap you up
I mean imagine just walking up casually and KABAM, your enemy is floating in the air, choking!
BG3 has some nice spell effects.
can flavor power word kill tho
Nothing really does that
But it would be cool!!
Choking Rope Trick
Some of the best I've seen. Honor among thieves has some very creative casting too
I mean... you could try to grapple choke someone, but choking someone in D&D is rough
insignia would work because the natural weapons is still used in 2014
Thank you
Power Word Kill is something I hope to use someday
I always thought of it as force choke minus the choking, and a lot more paralysis
eldritch wouldnt cause most beast use natrual weapons instead of unarmed strikes
When my players are above 100 hp
It's a good one
The animation and sound effect I have for it in Foundry is absolutely haunting
I imagine there's no specific choking spell because there are a few cases where a creature doesn't need air and choking them wouldn't make much sense
12d12 goes brrrrrr
doesnt need to breathe
I mean, there's a Drown spell, though
Water elemental whelm goes brrrrrre
There is? I'm thinking of constructs or elementals where it doesn't make a lot of sense to choke a magical golem or force of nature
Nothing official.
Honestly another way I envisioned it is like JJK😅
Like summoning an ethereal being to "hold someone" in place while you slowly walk over to deliver the final blow
That too
So natural weapons arent considered unarmed?
Nope two diffrent things
Weird I know
Now if you wanted to drown someone.
Shove them overboard in a sea campaign then have your caster hold person them.
Ok thank you again
Ah wait. Not moving actually doesn't do anything I think.
That would be a horrible way to die
I am 70% sure that sort of language was removed from the 2024 books
now animals attacks are just
that
You know what'd be fun? Being a martial with waterbreathing then grapple someone and drag them underwater.
Yeah i'm pretty sure unarmed strikes are quite explicitly labelled as their own thing in 2024
It'd do literally nothing since you can survive 3 + con rounds without breathing but it'd be funny
Or just be a warforged
That only sounds fun until you remember it involves actually using the grapple rules
im talking about natrual weapons
Which the grapple rules are fun and fine.
So.. a Siren?
Just as the language of magical and non magical was also removed
That’s a very hands on siren
Grapple and drowning someone in a puddle is brutal for duels
Apologies, I thought the discussion was about the difference between unarmed and natural weapons
All of them are if you get close enough
it was what would work in druid wild shape in 2014 insig of claws or claw tattoo
the claw tattoo only applies to unarmed strikes and druids wild shapes attack more often then not use there natural weapons to make there attacks so insig would work
ohh right
Grapple someone, ask teh wizard to cast create water and then drown the enemy in that water bubble or poodle
theres also a funny interaction between that and a barbarbarians rage where you can add a +2 cause all animals use strength for there attacks
Ye a common multiclass was Moon Druid and Bear Totem Barb
If that's the tone of the campaign
I'm beating the crap out of fire with my fist
Its lovely
I make Dragons do this if they have a swim speed
like it?
Oh yeah on players it'd be great
I dont think thats what they mean when they were talking about the flaming fist
Nah, I believe we're fighting animate dragons breath
Jane
You know what'd be crazy?
Have a Dragon drag a player down into frigid water
Cause the cold clothes lose their auto pass on extreme cold if they're wet
Grapple, mold earth, decanter of endless water for a puddle.
Dunk
Would take a full action from the dragon though
Grapple doesn’t work with multiattack iirc (correct me if I’m wrong)
It does.
it wouldn't, no
Thanks
Wait I thought you could replace an attack with a grapple.
Or does that only apply to PCs
They specify they have to be specific attacks
It only does if the creature has grapple included with the attack like a giant octopus grapple
a Dragon would effectively forfeit their action to grab+drag. Multiattack isn't the Attack Action, which means no Unarmed Strikes from it, which means no Grapple
Huh.
Or a snake
Well you still have a PC drowning in frigid water.
Or acid or lava, depending
Not every creature can make unarmed strikes imo
it does?
Yep
How much
I think it depends on the depth.
I dont care how deep the water is I cast fireball
Yeah waters surface provides total cover
I don't think water offers cover tbh
I think it depends of its murky or not
only think I remember is that you do gain fire resistance if you are fully under water
Cover =/= Obscurement
Yeah you do get fire resistance.
thats why I always take elelmental adept and reflavor it as Hell fire
hello friends
I think ranged attacks do have disadvantage still
Unless they're certain ranged stuff, mainly throwables, and a crossbow.
yeah, using weapons sucks in water
Unless the creature has a swim speed or the weapon does Pirecing damage you have disadvangae on using it under water
oh wait
When making a melee weapon attack, a creature that doesn’t have a swimming speed (either natural or granted by magic) has disadvantage on the attack roll unless the weapon is a dagger, javelin, shortsword, spear, or trident.
A ranged weapon attack automatically misses a target beyond the weapon’s normal range. Even against a target within normal range, the attack roll has disadvantage unless the weapon is a crossbow, a net, or a weapon that is thrown like a javelin (including a spear, trident, or dart).
Creatures and objects that are fully immersed in water have resistance to fire damage.
thats underwater combat
Now I wanna run a kraken and throw PCs
I haven't fought anything like that.
more krakens needed
it kept throwing me under water so I couldnt use my spell 😭
Oh wait. There was a one shot.
But in an actual campaign it'd be fun to fight a titan or something.
Honestly ive been wanting to throw some stronger monsters at players but ive been thinking of weaknesses to give them as well to make the encounter easier if they figure it out
I make my players fight the enemies as they are or harder than they should be.
cook
Yeah but throwing in a monsters weakness to see if they figure it out by accident or on purpose is really fun
Cause I sometimes like doing repeat encounters
I have three titans written into my HB setting currently
One of them might potentially make an appearance at some point.
The three being a Kraken, the Tarrasque and the Colossus.
Can we create poles in here? I’d like everyone’s input on a conundrum I’m having currently.
I’m looking to see what a better name is for my company I’m starting up. We will be doing paid GMing as well as doing our own supplements and content that people can buy.
I can’t really decide on what name is better.
Ghost-Light Studios
Or
Black Lantern Studios
Dude I love the Colossus
I like ghostlight
Ghost light Studios
But it is close to Ghostfire
I also like Ghostlight
Thats the same reason I picked Ghostlight
Ooo we picking a name Ghost like does sound really cool
I respect the FR book creators for putting an adventure hook involving the Blob of Annihilation
I have a logo done up for black lantern studios. But I’ll change it over to ghost light studios.
Wanna see the logo? It has a different plaque depending on what facet of the business is being used.
I just love GH
Black Lantern does sound like a black light
Would suggest Dark Lantern but iirc that’s the Brelish spy agency in Eberron
Maybe I might have the Blob of Annihilation crash onto my settings planet for a short form t4 adventure.
Reminds me of low laturn
Have any of you joined up with an online campaign that you really enjoyed?
Many
yeap, although it was mostly DMs i was familiar with already
I enjoy my current circles for tabletop
I see. How does one go about joining those? Are there online forums?
Luck
theres r/lfg, #find-a-game , start playing (this one is paid tho)
It really does feel like it
I found my best dms by crying here (Do not do this)
Ha
Well paid isn’t really on the table for me so I think Reddit is a decent idea
D&D beyond forms is another thing people use
Oh wow yeah I’m alright that seems like a less than foolproof strategy
r/lfg is good for finding dnd games, its all systems but 9/10 posts are dnd 5.x
Oh i see
I've got a Blob of Annihilation readied up for a wizard's magical menagerie/prison. In my mind, the complex's entire ceiling is made of Magical Force, which reveals the Blob of Annihilation sitting atop the Magical Force. Should the Wizard need to quickly kill everything in the menagerie, all they need to do is remove the magical force barrier and a Blob of Annihilation floods the demiplane, killing anything on the inside.
That's pretty awesome
All my ideas are either stolen or very simple
Brain no good
Unless I'm in my bi-monthly brain good phase
Me when my character with a -2 Charisma modifier manages to be diplomatic enough to stop a fight
Im sending this to the guy who says I cant stop a fight with only a 12 in charisma
There is no better diplomacy than an intimidating prescence and the power to back up the intimidation
Nope, he was kind and cordial and even spoke their language to them
I still think its weird that theres a spell that can give you expertise but its 5th level
I feel like if a spell gives you expertise it would be like 2nd maybe 3rd level
its in a skill you have to be proficient in as well
Skill Empowerment seems like an over leveled spell tbh
As I used to be dm, banning Silvery Barb making me a bad dm?
Not necessarily
Common ban
I used to ban it
But now its in my allowed content cause I own strixhaven now (my policy is if I own it, its allowed unless its in my setting then theres species restrictions)
I have allowed it in most games, I make a book list for every campaign I run, and its only very recently I have cut down that list for some new campaigns
In practice it burns so many caster spell slots so that's a good thing
Yeah, its such a neat resource spender
I dont understand why people ban SB it gives casters something to do with there reaction besides just shield
I personally think if you ban SB, its a skill issue
I just generally dont allow Strixhaven since i dont run it
People ban sheild too
There are bad dms out there that ban all reactions
Boy ain’t no way 💀
there are many skill issues out there
Like you, pookie
What we need to do is ban dice/jk
Ive been wanting to make a grim character recently whos trying to redeem themselves
Average attack rolls ftw
10.5+ your to hit mod?
10+numbers. +/- 5 for advantage/disadvantage
some monsters are always a hit and some are always a miss
How do you mean
If you’re not rolling attack rolls then for some monsters it’s just impossible for them to hit and for others it’s impossible for them to miss
I mean the lowest to hit i know is just 0
Oh I thought they meant, "some monsters will always be good at the table, some will always be horrible"
I think even zombies have a +5 on there slam
I didn't think "hit" as in actually "hitting"
+3 actually
if your bonus is +7, then you hit up to AC17 monsters. If you come across an Iron Golem (for example), you're screwed
Dodge action to turn that +7 into a +2
Oh yeah, the party I DM has an AC of 16 or above, some monsters don't even hit them, that's why I throw saving throws at them
Dm also know as the almighty
Or some other ways to give disadvantage like the Sap mastery
Druid - 16 AC, Monk - 16 AC, Fighter - 17 AC, Warlock - 17 AC, Grave Cleric - 17 AC
I'm ngl I thought they had higher AC
This is actually.. surprisingly very low
I still think its bull that clerics cant start with Scale mail anymore
Give them some magic item for someone’s AC
the Cleric has a cloak of protection they don't attune to because it's sentimental, (it's from a dead PC who was a sorcerer)
Theres very few magic item that boost ac that everyone can se
Rings of Protection and Cloaks of Protection?
I see 3 classes that can use an armor or shield for an AC bonus
They sure can, starting gold is wonderful
I mean with starting equipment
Only one of them are using a shield
thats what I mean
not everyone wants to lug around a metal plate in there face/not everyone has war caster
I always take war caster cause yeah
And?
Never said it had to be for all of them
Only the Warlock is using a shield iirc
im assuming thats a hexblade then
Yeah I said 3 of them.
Cleric, Druid, Fighger
oh right, Clerics can use shields
I forgot about that
Clerics weirdly enough dont use sheilds enough
Yeah
I do through
It’s in their starting gear
I always run Shield + Cleric, I don't know why I forgot
The party actually had to fight tooth and nail for that shield
Ou why is that? I have shield and wondering if I'm doing something wrong
wdym?
Sorry who are you replying to?
Curious what the reason here is
Oh because you cant cast spells without a free hand
+2 AC is always nice
you need to do the VSM
the S needs a free hand unless you have a ruby of the war mage of war caster
You can always just doff your melee weapon while casting
doff is the wrong term for putting away a melee weapon
Well, you'll have to pick it back up, but still
Stow
I'm too tired to think right now
Sheathe
It's Doff now because I say so
One sec gotta sheathe my shield
Not all weapons have sheathes
Thank you
They do if you try hard enough.
Right! The free hand needed. That makes sense
you do run into another wall of needing to do the martial component cause that needs another hand free or an acrane focus
I let my player circumvent this by having their crystal arcane focus as a necklace as well, and then his character died
through im pretty sure you can also wear an arcane focus the PHB isnt really clear on it
Yeah
now his new arcane focus (Hexblade Warlock), has a crystal embedded in a glove of his
But for people like wizards its usually an orb or staff
If Wizards are so smart why are they hurking around a giant glass sphere
Just use wands like the rest of us
Cause a glass sphere has 100 times more aura then just some fancy stick
One meter glass sphere as a focus is a huge flex
Urizt gets it
don't be a coward, use a staff
Wands are clearly better
War thurible
they are not.
Ngl glass shpere makes me wanna be a wizard who only uses divi magic
Light on the wrist and easy to carry, and cheap
When have you ever used a staff as a weapon, as a wizard
it's not about the weapon, it's about the aesthetic
Flavor only makes sense with a character who has a connection to the divine tho
So happy I am flying back home tommmorow, having to book off 2 weeks of sessions for a family vacation has been rough
I will find you..
I feel like a weakling, I had to resched my session to this day because I just took a vacation, I'm already missing my D&D
good news is it's in 7 hours
All spells are divination if you're confident enough.
"In the spheres, I foresee a terrible accident befalling you... I cast fireball!"
Tarot Cards as a spell focus
The Great Glasses tell of your great fortune turning sour... silvery barbs
rolls 8 damage
Tarot cards are amazing ngl
I love my deck of many things
I love the deck of many more things
I was gonna make a wizard one day who draws who thinks they "got" a deck of many things
so whenever they pull a card they just cast a spell
3d6 hardcore is so fun, I did TOA like that
Did you know theres a rule set in dnd called epic hero fantasy where long rest are only an hour
and short rest are 10 mins
yup, very fun
Yes the optional resting rules in the 2014 dmg
There's also gritty realism where a short rest is 8 hours and a long rest Is a week
I thought that was interesting
Never used either, across 29 campaigns of 5e I have ran
Id prob reduce long rest to 72 hours instead of a whole as week
Hmm.. what should I put my players through this session...
I already know I'm giving them consequences for their actions
I still dont think I fully understand the role of dm in dnd
Mainly when it comes to rules
obivously your there to breathe life into the world
But there has to be more to it then just at
Referee. Make rulings in the moment to the best of your ability with the purpose of keeping the game moving and fun for everyone, including yourself.
Mmm thanks
Collaborative storyteller, playing the role of the VS in the narrative conflict. Conflict (narrative) - Wikipedia https://share.google/n6L6oxLly5iXcKr2W
✍️ word
You get to be an actor, director, teacher, improviser, storyteller, worldbuilder, and referee all in one
Don't forget that you're also a player, there to have fun as well.
imo the two most important tasks the DM pulls off are:
- referee. you apply and enforce the rules of the game and clarify ambiguities, making rulings for parts of the game which the rules don’t cover.
- keeper of secrets. you know information abt the world and fiction that the players don’t, and to find out more information abt the world the players go through you. you reveal things to the players as their characters discover them.
short rests 1h long rests a full day of downtime in a settlement is my default now
.
Another good skill for a dm imo is to use your players words.
If your player says something that gives you some kinda inspiration, keep it in mind.
Players who are very active at the table can be good sources of ideas.
Does anyone know hot to start a horror dnd campaign
First you start a D&D campaign.
Then you put horror themes and narratives in it.
Done.
You should also consider which horror you're going for
yeah horror is a very broad umbrella
How good of a cantrip is sacred flame?
I mean... it's alright
not my favorite
but it's still pretty solid
I take it for my clerics but it’s just aight
So and so.
It can have its moments.
Best cantrip to kill Zombies at least
Since their dex sucks and radiant is needed to kill through their Undead Fortitude reliably.
It is fun to just see how mangled the zombies get after you get them down for the 5th time
My group has been having people bring friends to the LGS to sit in on and spectate our D&D games these last couple weeks
Which you know, that's whatever, they have a friend from out of town over and don't wanna leave that person sitting alone while they go play D&D
But if that person is just gonna be sitting there looking so annoyed and bored like they hate being there, id rather they just not or that you not show up to that session while that person is in town
I'm not asking that they care about the game and what's going on in it, but I'd rather they not just be sitting there looking like they despise being there and wanna be anywhere else
Are they making nuisances of themselves? Interrupting the game or something?
No but the presence of somebody sitting there looking absolutely miserable and judgemental about us doing voices and such really brings down the vibe in my opinion
I dunno I just don't want somebody sitting there looking like they hate being there and hate what they're seeing when we're trying to play D&D
Like why drag this person here
That would harsh my vibe, for sure.
Yeah it really sucked it doesn't matter if he's actually interfering with the game or not
You got the space to throw them a sidekick sheet?
I'd rather he just not be there
Hey you wanna participate in this thing that you're obviously hating?
Yeah no that doesn't really work
One to mention to the folk involved, then. "You're harshing my buzz, man, you need to make like a banana and split."
With 2024 find familiar using an Owl, with the “touch” spell does the Owl need to be within touch range or just 100 ft?
How do concentration spells work
When you're concentrating on a spell, it will end if you cast another concentration spell, or if you fail your concentration check (constitution saving throw) after taking damage
You can only concentrate on one spell at a time, so if you cast another concentration spell the former ends. Additionally, every time you hit you do a con save to keep concentration
Annndd pink just said everything I meant to say
Yeah but you pinged them for higher visibility
So the spell gets casted and I have to concentrate to keep it active?
Ye
Ight
Spells that have a duration but don't have concentration, like Longstrider for example, will be able to persist alongside concentration spells.
I always thought I had to concentrate for that long to cast it
-# you can also drop concentration on a spell for free at any time
Once it's up, concentration is free. Doesn't cost an action or anything.
Nah that’s different
That’s spells with a casting time of more than an action
Which you generally don't cast in combat
Unless it's like some once in a lifetime thing.
is knowledge cleric fun or good?
The owl needs to be within Touch range of the target you're wanting to cast the touch spell on; but you can be up to 100ft away from the familiar while doing this
People left you hanging lol
The owl actually needs to fly down within range to use spells with Touch
Oh speaking of timing
Versatile and knowledgeable (because, well...)
Useful if the party lacks a skill monkey. Read thoughts is a bit of a weird flex, but it's there. Obviously good in exploration, investigation and similar, but can also be useful in a dungeon to figure things out.
Knowledge Cleric is fun skill utility
They're very skill focused cleric subclass and information focused
Their 2024 version is a bit nicer since they get 3 spells per domain spell levels instead of 2.
Knowledge Domain gets so many nice to spells to always have prepared
They're great utility tbh
Ye their new expanded spell list really fits the "knowledge" theme alongside their features.
Lots of ways to find stuff out.
The word "Detect" is in my spell list like 4 times
And another nice thing is their Mind Magic which let's them use a domain spell for free with channel divinity
Yeah without material components for something like detect thoughts and identify
The not needing material components being the big kicker
I took Augury on mine just to keep the theme going
Also I think it would actually be useful in CoS
Then Legend Lore and Scrying for free later on.
Cast Legend Lore on Strahd
Get major spoilers
My DM really overstated the danger of that last session so my character didn't die so I didn't get to play my replacement character
Like I was kinda looking forward to
5th level though
Dude just told he doesn't like most high level rogue abilities are for combat😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I don't know what that sentence means.
They are not satisfied regarding the fact they have learned that most of abilities rogue class in Dungeons and dragons get past high levels are usually meant to be used in combat, rather than social interractions or exploration
Why so many unecessary emojis?
Because i am genuinely not sure what do they expect from a martial class
Ahh okay, but the low level ones continue to work pretty great.
And I would consider Reliable Talent somewhere around middle level.
There's some that have a different focus, right? Inquisitive at least. And doesn't Assassin come with disguises and such?
Arcane Trickster continues to gain more Utility spells as they level by dint of accessing the Wizard spell list.
That's got value.
D&D as it stands is still focused on combat first, with exploration and interaction being secondary. There are options but fewer of them.
My friend was complaining about how theres too many classes in dnd 5e so I hard drag him through 4e and 3e to show him just how bad it could have been
Since I can telepathically talk to it as well use action on it’s turn.
Hold action: the moment I say “go” using it’s 60 ft of fly to fly down towards ally and fly back up.
Oh wait using a hold action uses up reaction. And that
Uses up the moment they need to do touch spell..
No, because it needs its Reaction free to channel the spell through it. So you don't have a Reaction available to move.
So it needs to be already touching the target before your turn comes up. Have the owl fly to the intended target and land on them if they are friendly.
Hmm noted
…I just realised it says I can summon a CR 0. I summon Commoner so I can just summon a dude in.
Would I be able to choose what he wearing or holding?
I assume it would disappear the moment it dies.
Dang it’s a I summon friend spell.
I was thinking about using Find familiar for my Cleric.
I would summon a Common Knight with high AC just to Be able to avoid hits. But sadly can’t attack back.
Or a spider attached to the martial.
Find Familiar lets you summon a CR 0 Beast. Not any CR 0 creature.
Okay good to know.
Knights are CR 3 creatures so even if you could summon a humanoid (which you can’t), they’re too high of a CR
Commoners aren’t just any person. They’re specifically, commoners. They use the commoner stat block, that’s the equipment they have
Characters with armour, weapons, etc are other stat blocks
FF only works with beast no?
||Giant Fly my beloved||
I still don’t think that should work
Giant fly should be a construct not a beast given the context of what it comes from
It does following RAW and at sanctioned events the DM us forced to oblige
There’s a lot of silly things you can do raw
Yeah, it's clearly not intended
You can use the sane logic for making the Lion a Construct so I doubt they can make that errata... However, CR 1/4 fixes it. Tbh it could also use an attack
There are Beasts which don't look like Beasts at all (Tomb of Horror has a few) so Giant Fly is at least more beast-y than that
No the giant fly is apart of a magic item which is why it doesn’t have an attack
And it's the reason why it wouldn't be an option outside of DDBeyond, which happens to list it as part of it's database structure.
The very fact that it comes from a Rare Magic Item is why I would disallow it for Find Familiar. Because a 1st level ritual shouldn't get you the benefits of a Rare Magic Item.
Exactly
There's no need to errata something that isn't a mistake.
Ebony Fly (Rare). This ebony statuette, carved in the likeness of a horsefly, can become a Giant Fly (see the accompanying stat block) for up to 12 hours and can be ridden as a mount. Once it has been used, it can’t be used again until 2 days have passed.
I just said "it should be" not that "it is"
Wait until you hear about 2 Lions which are part of a magic item
As a player, how do you deal with clique?
It matters in my game and that's all I need.
It didnt even have a CR in 2014 which means it couldnt even be vaild for FF
Making one? Becoming part of one? In-character? Out-of-character? What?
No clue why they changed it
No it wouldn't have
Also you still need that specail mount to even ride the flying creature so
Becoming part of it, both in and out character
What do you mean both in and out of character?
Your question is too vague to answer.
very vague
Then, just leave them then? There is no clear answer to deal with clique
You'll have to give a lot more context for anyone to even begin to try and answer without making a lot of assumptions.
Personally I'd love a RAW errata with it actually having a CR 1/4 or tbh higher if there were some way for it to be a magical Beast summoned by the Warlock as that sounds awesome
You need a 50gp mount to even get on the thing
No, I mean none of us know enough about the situation you're talking about to even begin to try and answer.
That is already a step ahead and for proper travel that is more than fair
Well, use Grammarly if you have difficulties in understanding this, I'll type whatever I have in mind....regardless it's grammatically correct or not
Exotic harness is what you need
Grammarly won't give me more information about your situation.
I heard DMs online say no mount other than horses should be able to be used so RAI can go wild
RAW you need an exotic mount to ride a flying creature
Saddle, you mean?
In the West Marches server I have joined, a DM recommended me to be active on online roleplay
Takes a lot of gold
However, it's so difficult to either start or join the online, because most players have their own cliques due to their irl campaign experiences
also very heavy to get around when the mount dies
RAW if going purely for min-maxing you'd never look past your Owl so I feel like Giant Fly is getting a bad rep when you can have advantage every turn at level 1
advantage every turn isnt that hard to get
Dammit, the topic gets mixed up
you can also just kill the owl
Thanks to this....Monday Night RAW nonsense
This takes time, just keep playing with them and get to know them over time.
Its sunday
Sure if you use a Ranged or spellcaster against your low level party
At level 5 everyone can fly or teleport anyway
Giant Fly is still cool tho, ignoring using it for flight
Does your DM just not have ranged attckers at tier 1 or something?
Tier 1? Sure
Will it be a good idea to consistently ask them? Getting invited to join a RP in first try feels like gambling
Is everyone stuck to using melee or
I don't think it matters at Level 4 tho
Cause if thats the tier 1 play sounds easy as hell
There's really no other way. Just keep showing up. It takes time to build relationships with people.
Tbh Tier 1 is supposed to be easy
Most of the Tier 1 campaigns here recommend or only allow pregens because they're meant to help new players first. Tier 2 has that too, tho clearly less so and I'd feel bad for players jumping into a level 5 Bard
The biggest bummer tbh is that Tier 4 isn't popular as that'd be the best meat grinder tier
Because tier 4 isnt popular at all
Yes
It'd be a funny end to characters though, going the full arc from humble adventurer to failed demigod
It's a headache. Players can't remember half the stuff they can do and the half they do is nonsense. And if they haven't worked their way up to it and become invested in the world, it's General Zod time two minutes in.
Trust me I can hardly remember half the thing I can do at the higher end of tier 2
And thats me when I play wizard
The main reason I play wizard is cause they dont get that many class features
Druid my beloved
Druid is the biggest criminal of that overall imo
Give me all the complexity and I'm a happy player
You either always turn into the same animals or have to keep track of every animal you know that your character has seen in and out of game
Yes
It gets boring over time
I haven't done so yet but under the 2014 rules I kept track of the soap and whetstones I was using
At least the spell list is good
Animorphing is always a blast to me
KCD?
I have no idea what that abbreviation stands for
back in 3e where druids couldnt use metal objects or armor
But druids are the best for survival based games
And now in 5e you can have a Lamp
I have dark vision
Rip Outlander foraging
Man, roleplaying as an orc is pure pain
What are you waffling about?
Didn't Orcs become much easier in 2024 compared to Evil in Volo's?
Everyone who gets good roleplay.....are human-like species
You mean a stereotypical orc or
It's a video game. Your character's social skills are impacted by your appearance and folk may react negatively if you roll up covered in blood and mud.
This
then dont?
Oh nice
Social Standing is always fun
You can be a smart orc or something
GORK SMASH
If anything rping as an elf is even more insufferable
MORK KRUMP
What is an Orc but a cursed Elf anyway
Elfs live longer and are more stuck up
Their own species, with no relation to elves.
Just like Dwarves actually
In my Grim Fels game, the First Folk were elves, orcs and dwarves. All were massively in decline at the start of the game, but the orcs remained most present.
Elfs live longer then Dwarfs too
Yes, folklore and Tolkien books have them 100% seperate
Pretty sure elfs over all are just the longest living race outside of class feature and all that
and warforged
One specific class' class feature too
Oh I didn't even know oops
Undying Nature
Beginning at 10th level, you can hold your breath indefinitely, and you don't require food, water, or sleep, although you still require rest to reduce exhaustion and still benefit from finishing short and long rests.
In addition, you age at a slower rate. For every 10 years that pass, your body ages only 1 year, and you are immune to being magically aged.
At least both Warlock and Druid share having mediocre class capstones
thats not its capstone
It's also better than Druid's
also 2014 druid had nearly the strongest capstone
just inf wildshapes
inf hp
you can also cast spells inside your wildshape
Druids deserve it for being a bit lackluster
timeless body was at 18th level
they also got beast spells
Wizard is only strong is cause the spells it has access to ngl
my party just exhausted their resources on a weak encounter 😭
How murderhobo are they?
They arent murder hobo they just arent the best
Hopefully they know to run
Dnd players dont know what running is
sounds like a great way to teach that preserving resources is a good thing
Murderhobo behavior then
Ive had mutiple TPKS on this one encounter thats made to be ran away from
granted thats also cause aura of murder is cracked
running away in 5e?!?
Aura of murder has to be my favorite monster ability through out
I never had this issue in PF pods...
all of 5e
5e has a tendency to make players feel like superheroes and superheroes don't tend to run away froma fight 😄
Yeah but when the enemy can go invisable and give you vulnerbility to a damage type they seem to be really good at doing running is a amazing idea
Superheroes also never get stinky it seems
I use magic to keep my self smelling fresh
I like the idea of a wizard smelling like flowers while standing on top of a septic basement
Simulacrum being called a illusion spell is still wild to me
I had made this perfect copy of me!
Its an illusion but it can also do whatever I can do
Yes it can also cast wish why do you ask?
And bring back healing and fertility necromancy spells why you're at it
De-aging
The community should write 6e
Not a good idea
I see no issues
Ah yes, the community, famous for having concise, organized and agreeable ideas
That's why
I veto adding "kidnapped by One Direction" as an official adventure module
Making players home brew become in game balance speed trying not to laugh
Just wait till we have to contend with the writers that want spell points to become the default
Still see no issues here
We’d have like 100 more Sylunes vipers
Everyone starts as a Commoner at level 0
Alright I force myself to level up to 1
Whoa you now have 1d4 HP and 1 spell slot
Wouldn’t it be two?
Never played Baldur's Gate?
Which one
You need not know more
Real cRPGcels are out here playing Pool of Radiance
Computer game with ADnD 1e as the engine, what could go wrong
Guys can anyone play right now?
I’ve play 2e
As good as commodore 64 games could be
I do remember there being a good emulator for Linux so that isn't too bad
And no C64 here here plz
Die Vecna Die was such a fun time
Fake 16 bit support goes hard
If I could pick a non 5e module to be ported to 5e, id say we bring back the modron march
I’m actually trying to do that rn
It takes a stupid amount of time
I feel like recent popularity kinda forces Forest Oracle as a contender
Play what?
No like dnd
Like is it possible for y'all to play rn or you only play once a week

wait I just realized something. Someone mentioned that Giant Fly is only a creature RAW because it's in the DDB Creature list. Just for my sanity, this isn't true right? And if it is, does that mean that Boomerang is also RAW? (It's technically in a list, even if not in any book)
I mean yeah it’s barely even a creature
oh you were probably who said that yes
but is that actually how RAW works and does that make the boomerang an option for AL?
Boomerang is just a returning weapon no?
basically yes, but it's also a Boomerang
I know boomerang isn’t listed as a base dnd weapon but throw weapons exist for a reason
I'm asking about RAW rules here as it's actually really funny to use a Boomerang as a Fighter, and the list even lists +1 to +3
Oh I’ve never heard of it cause it’s from princes
Yeah that book is like hardly ever used
Again I did say base dnd
Meaning PHB
It is a magic item from princes and I think DDB it has to be in there for database purposes. Its a DDB thing IIRC from a previous conversation regarding this.
people do say it isn't RAW and following any logic it shouldn't be but if what you said is true with Giant Fly being RAW because DDB lists it, then Boomerang should too
It also doesn’t have its own proficient
The boomerang is a ranged weapon, and any creature proficient with the javelin is also proficient with this weapon.
oh it was never printed in a book anyway
has anyone ever played with 2014 DMGs Speed Factor Initiative rules
Yeah it is just a DDB thing IIRC.
Yeah cause it’s from princes
How does it work?
Yeah, they added the base item in DDB to make the magic item work.
Yeah Boomerang was never a weapon, just a magic item
it is but again, if that's what makes Giant Fly RAW then this should too?
It’s a magic item
oh wrong reply... to that message, no it isn't technically
It was made in DDB due to an old limitation when that module was released
And again the only reason I personally don’t think the giant fly should work is cause in 2014 in didn’t have a CR
storm boomerang is a magic item but the one I linked isn't
tbh if we could still follow the 2014 rules I'd have a lot of fun with Origin Feats and multiclass combos but alas
2014 doesn’t have origin feats (kinda)
everyone declares intended actions, you roll Initiative with modifiers, and then go High to Low
starting again at the top of each round
Spells are slower than Daggers etc
That’s awful
seems somewhat interesting, I just wonder how it pairs with Ready Actions
I doubt it takes into account of the spell uses all 3 components or what if the spell uses no components IE meta magic
There is so much common items that are so... good but for a common life
every replacement feat implies it is the same feat but updated so you can end up with bonus to your stats and a stronger feature if you could use the replaced feat if there wasn't a hard rule on 2024 only in AL and following the "what's updated" and errata blocks and changes in RAW
I mean it says the DM can add stuff like that, the table it gives it just a starting point
I mean what’s it name did start the trend of backgrounds giving feats
Book of many things
Those being rewarded and ruined
There’s also wild spacer and rune carver
Also about that the main reason 2014 backgrounds didn’t give feats is cause they gave other benefits/roleplay elements
Life would be nicer with some
Chest of preservation = Perfect fridge
Bottle of Boundless Coffee
Heward's Handy Spice Pouch
Thermal Cube
Clothes of Mending
Cleansing Stone
yep, still rip Foraging
Ive never had a table where foraging was a thing we did
10 days on adventure and I hope your Druid prepared Goodberry
or rather than your have a Druid but
Create water is also a must also anybody can obtain good berry
at character creation sure, going for Magic Initiate (Druid)
(almost feels like a waste to do so)
Rune carver
You can cast good berry up to 3 times a day without wasting a spell slot
is that still legal?
Of course it has other good spells like fog cloud chomo orb
It’s from Bigby’s so I don’t see why not
You can also invoke a rune inscribed on an object you are wearing or carrying and cast its associated spell without expending a spell slot or using material components. Once you cast the spell in this way, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.
does anyone know if kobold fight club is updated for the 2024 mm?
I don't believe so, it's still 2014 from memory
What what what what
guess i'm going medieval with my encounter balance then
Kobolds are dragons in the new rules
it does use the 2024 DMG rules as a basis for its encounter balance. What I do is just use a 2014 monster with an equivalent CR to the one I want to use from the 2024 mm
works out fine
that'll work, thank you
Do you think that if the older races get reprinted that goblins will be fey?
Potentially. There's prescedent for them being fey in the 2024 MM and iirc the new eberron book features non-humanoid playable species
I know it makes me so excited
I still cri about Giant Eagle
I’m hoping for one of each player race gets
And yeah changelings are fey so i'd believe a goblin fey species
Yeah they are
That thing is a celestial now
yes 😢
I think almost all the giant beast are no longer beast
most still are
Quick question can i dump my int till it reach 5 and then use the remaining points to increase my charisma till it reach 18 lul. Itd be so funny having a warlock thats dumb as rock but still can rizz tons of girls
No
Those three plus the eagle are all four non-beast giant creatures
Not with point-buy.
Point buy has a max of 15 and a min of 8
You need to do it manually yea, by dm approval
What gnome said
Right, but none of us are your DM.
15 is the max I think points after 13 cost double the normal cost
I mean sure but that's homebrew and against the direct rules of the game
Starting with an 18 in all of your physical stats would go crazy
Call yourself Toji at that point
The ability score costs represent the entire range your stats can be with point buy
Or monk would be even more broken at level 1
18 standing ac +6 to hit doing 1d6+4 in damage
That’s without background bonuses
Mornin
Str, dext and const or you mean all of them?
Physical stats
yeah, those are the physical
Then yes
