peak!
I got around the flying thing by just having them have a climb speed until level 3 when they finally get a fly speed
I sorta wanna do Exemplar but it feels outrageous
Hoiii
Hi hi
if a DM tells me they haven't indulged and made some absolutely vile homebrew at least once, they're lying to me
Everyone’s got homebrew skeletons in their closet
not even skeletons I've got an utterly horrifying sword that hasn't even seen use yet, it's coming out for the first time tomorrow
Artifact that, at it's max potential, can deal up to 14d6 damage (which takes a lot of time & luck to get up to)
Okey!! im bad with some puzzles sorry!! didnt knew the hand had those much bones and now it look weird an... and is in the closet so no one see it....
Solly
Why do I feel like all my Homebrew creations are tame?
Ring of The Devoted
This ring has 1 charge, and it regains 1 expended charge daily at dawn. When you become frightened while wearing it, you can use your reaction to expend 1 of its charges to become immune to the frightened condition for 1d4 hours.
While wearing this ring, you are able to recall most things from yours and other religions, allowing you either advantage to Religion (Intelligence) Checks or you can use your Spellcasting Modifier in place of Intelligence, this effects do not stack. However, your devotion has lead you turn away from False Truths and Deceits, granting you disadvantage on any Deception (Charisma) Checks you make while the ring is worn.
Damn, going back I definitely need to clean my grammar.
oh yeah that's relatively fine
My homebrew ranges from “that’s kinda cool” to “oh dear god…. No….. don’t”
Waterborn
-# Starting Feat
prerequisite: race: Water Genasi
Your exposure to the water has allowed you to shape it with ease.
- You learn the shape water cantrip, and can have two active portions of this cantrip at once.
- You can cast two actions of Shape Water in the same Action.
Someone explain to me why the Water Genasi don't just start with Shape Water... it has never made sense to me.
I don't think most of my homebrew is disgustingly overpowered.... or at least, the stuff that I choose to be overpowered is overpowered
Mine get complicated
I like the idea of incorporating some Larianbrew into campaigns for the weaker/questionable classes/features
I will say one thing: GREASE BEING CONCENTRATION ALWAYS PISSED ME OFF
Wait is it conc cuz I checked and it didn't say the puddle is conc
wait it's what
Wait. They must have changed it. I always remembered Grease being concentration. That's why I always threw Gale away to be forever camped.
The Wizard
Yeah, I don't like Wizards.
it's not conc, looks like it never has been
I remember venting to my friend so hard about it being concentration.
Could it be because I was playing Early Access? Was it concentration then?
no clue
Most of the games that are advertised here are online. You would be better off going to your nearest game store.
If u want to learn how to play however #dnd-newcomers is a good place for you to go.
hello
Which damage type would you say is more common, acid, psychic, force or necrotic?
Force is the LEAST common, followed by Psychic.
Necrotic and Acid are actually relatively the same level of common.
I was about to argue that necrotic is rarer but then I remembered the last time I was hit by an attack that dealt acid damage was like years ago
Yeah. They’re equally rare
And each have a creature type that generally deals that type of damage
I'll never really get the hate for flying from certain DMs.
Flying loses a lot of its power if the flying person goes melee
Or if the DM remembers Bows exist.
Its like darkvision, if even one person in your team doesn't have darkvision and needs a light source in the dark, suddenly its moot
As do spellcasters.
You're asking me to make a 2D battlemap 3D. That's a lot of mental work on top of everything else.
My rule is the following:
- You can use your Flying Speed for roleplay.
- You can use your Flying Speed in Combat, but if you take damage you have to roll a constitution save to stay in the air or fall prone.
Sometimes I pull out a gun.
God dayum, nerfed it into the ground
I’m not leaning to one side or the other I’m just saying I think that’s a pretty big nerf
-# Literally /j
Well, if you got shot you'd forget to flap your wings. It only makes sense.
So your dragons never fly?
Considering that the majority of encoutners will be inside buildings and cramped places, I don't think it's particuarly arduous to remember "Oh yeah you're ten feet up at most."
yeah but that's also not how the mechanics of the game work
If you stub your toe do you forget how legs work?
This rule is mainly for Aarocokra and Owlin whose wings are their hands.
I don't get the problem with flying. It's not complicated. All you need is to remember the distance between the character and the ground.
neither owlins nor aarocokra work like this
Making a 2D battlemap 3D is not " a lot of mental work". It's one number
My brain is tired. I just looked it back up.
in official art for both of these species, they have separate hands and wings
I was just about to say, they both have six limbs
I don’t wanna take sides or anything because I can see arguments for both sides but I myself am fine with flying players
You're right lol.
Seriously, what is it about flying PCs that intimidates people so much?
90% of arguements I see is "It's more work and I hate it."
And 10% "They cheese it too much and I hate it."
One number is more work?
Well, considering that my rule was based on having the same limbs for flight and hands, I must say that I have no reason to not allow flying.
So therefore I guess I'll allow it.
It's the most common argument I see about it. I personally don't think it's very hard to track at all, especially on roll20 where you can just add a little number on the token.
Aha! I now see where I was confused:
Earlier versions of D&D had illustrations in which aarakocra did not have both arms and wings. Instead, their hands were akin to those of bats, with fingers part way along their wings. Yet in 5e, the illustrations for aarakocra picture them with arms that are independent of their wings.
While it may not be true, this is probably what I internalized.
One number. You just remember or write down a number for the character's altitude. That's it. This is not "more work". Now, the one difficulty I could see is in figuring out the distance between two characters when flight is in play but... Pythagoras gave you all the tools two thousand and five hundred years ago
Hi, at what stages of the game do the players have the strongest impact when making decisions for levelling?
It varies wildly between classes and subclasses to be frank.
Level 3-6 I'd say
Because some include lots of important choices, others are basically a railroad.
Level 3 is when you pick your subclass, level 6 is usually when you might plan to multiclass
But level 3 is probably the biggest by default because Sublcasses
level 6-8 is where most multiclasses tend to happen
Which ones offer the most choice?
Level 3 is also where you finally dig yourself out of the "Die when looked at funny" hole
Thing like Totem Barbarian, which includes multiple selections to pick from in the majority of their subclass feats.
I'm a big fan of having many options and paths to build up one's subclass.
IT's why I like Warlock Invocations so much.
If you scrying someone under the effects of nondetection, do you get to know that nondetection was why scrying failed
No. You can certainly deduce it, but you don't automatically know
Shift is almost over for today
Only thing I could really think in my head and try to reflect on is
Actually, probably not the best thing to say. nvm
whats everyones favourite background?
Yeah let's not, don't turn this into therapy lol
Favourite background is probably soldier, just seems like a good all around thing
Not quite that deep this time, but yeah
Level 3
And hard to say for a background. This current campaign doesn't really seem to care too much for backgrounds
Wizard and Warlock
Which is a shame, because soldier would be fun for talking to other groups
I always see backgrounds as just text blocks for stats, I rp around my backstory not the background (which is an extension of the backstory)
EXACTLY! i mostly choose criminal for the alert feat
I will say this, though. Wizard in the team is quite pleasant to talk with. He's giving me genuine thought out advice, which is definitely a pleasant experience
My background has come up many times in my campaign. But that's mostly because I actively chase the fact that I'm in the semi-secret Wizard Order of Scribes, with many hidden libraries and associates scattered across the lands.
Which, silver lining about me, small things like thay can lift my spirits up a good bit
Scribe Wizard Money Gang.
That's the way to do it.
If your backstory is presented to the DM at the start of the campaign in some document and you personally, never mention it again. It's probably not coming up.
If you make a point of going to the tavern in every town with a missing poster for your sibling. It's probably going to become relevant.
Should probably get back to work now. Would love to talk for a bit more, but not sure what to say other than what has been said
It is very likely that during my next session, I'll be turning from a Fairy into a Winged Centaur due to Plot. I am excited to see how it all turns out.
Custom. Backgrounds are feature blocks. Backstory is where it's at. Although, twist my arm and I'd say Acolyte or Sage. Magic Initiate is just so useful.
Custom is always nice, Druid backgrounds confuse me cuz nothing feels like its the absolute best
Lots of "just good enough"s
Outlander :P
Finally off work
W
Artisan. I boil it down to the Origin feat, then work it in from there. Love me a 20% discount from Crafter
Out of curiosity, what would the best background be for a sniper?
I only remember the soldier background, and it's okay. Idk if there's anything better
Outlander
mm
guys, how would yall update kensei to 5.5/2024?
Give them weapon masteries
best feat for an eldritch blast focused warlock?
im a variant human so i get that juicy feat (not war caster pls 😭 )
uuuh
ngl warcaster is really cool, you can't risk loosing a spellslot because you broke con
Spell sniper
i once did a shenanigan with warcaster and sentinel, really fun stuff
Sage
nice option as well, if you can see yourself sniping people in your campaign, goes well with the ranged eldritch invocation
i like metamagic adept
More for ignoring cover and the melee disadvantage. Not often having more than 120 range is particularly relevant.
Weapon masteries, remove the silly bonus action 1d4 to ranged weapon attacks (it's so bad, at literally any level the extra unarmed strike probably does more damage than 2d4)
I cast command word breakdance
aw dang. Seems I gotta breakdance now!
I punch like the drunk monk I am
Roll to hit i guess
Oh interesting how many punch
Okay lets see here…
so 6 🙂
You…miss boblin the goblin
🥺
Boblin breaks it down, roll a charisma saving throw
19 🕶️
You recognise this as the average goblin battle of the dance
i cast
guidance on his saving throw
thats a 21 now (you're welcome i just saved you from dying)
Tysm
Boblin the goblin seems to be challenging you to a good ol’ fashion dance battle
WAIT: we never rolled iniative...
Folk, let's not get too much into RP joking or not 😉
ok
Yea sorry
sorry
No worries!
Just prefer to keep this channel clear for discussion, and save RP for the games we join- we don't actually support RP on the server, because that's more for your own games and spaces. Nothing wrong with having fun, just wanted to slide in here before it got too into it.
Now the real question- do you think Boblin the goblin is the same goblin in all games? Is there a Boblin-verse?
in a parallel dimension, boblin is called goblin
shrugs and walks away
We are all Boblin
Are there pros and cons on getting digital PHB, Xanathar, etc book copies?
Pros:
- easier to search
- Don't take up space in house
- Useful for online games and content sharing with friends
- auto updates with errata
Cons:
- Subscription means that if you loose that sub, you loose access most of the time
- Often doesn't work without internet
- Can't get the cool alt-covers
- Can't scratch that collectors itch
- Can't easily pass along to a friend/family in future
Boblin is canon as the goblins best breakdancer trust
Thanks!
guys, can a monk dash twice a turn? aka once bonus action and again with their action? in 2024
and that'd be 30x2x2, or 30+30+30
Sure, monk can do it, rogue can do it too. And it's 30+30+30.
(assuming your speed is 30)
tx
i did not find the 5e thing for monk weapons, did they make it subclass specific? Or not yet added?
Good morning dnd pals
Monk weapons?
idk the name in english, lemme grab tasha
(By the time you can bonus action dash as a monk, you can move 40ft instead of 30, but yes)
Criminal or Carouser
oh i cant send screenshots
Dedicated Weapon (Optional)
Also at 2nd level, you train yourself to use a variety of weapons as monk weapons, not just simple melee weapons and shortswords. Whenever you finish a short or long rest, you can touch one weapon, focus your ki on it, and then count that weapon as a monk weapon until you use this feature again.
The chosen weapon must meet these criteria:
The weapon must be a simple or martial weapon.
You must be proficient with it.
It must lack the heavy and special properties.
^ this
This was partially rolled into the 2024 monk default rules, as they now have a larger selection of monk weapons.
only light martial weapons tho
Yep, not as expansive as the Tashas option. You can ask your DM if you could still include that option with 2024 though.
Tasha's is still current, but it was always optional, so ask your DM.
Where do I go to post a game?
Maybe his dream is to fly
Harder for melee attackers to get them probably? Are they a species with flying or are they casting the spell "fly"?
Thet just like to cast "fly" that's all
Please read the instructions in #find-a-game . It will tell you how our looking-for channels work
Yeah, it's pretty cool. I understand the preference.
neeat
Ah, well, its concentration and only for 10mins at 3rd level.. so i would assume they can only do it a limited amount of times a session.
Not to mention if you hit them in combat while flying, they fall.
Learn some caution real quick when you fall 60ft
But also, yeah.. flying is pretty cool
The thing is
Idk how to treat flying rule....
No one in my dnd campaign want to fly
2014 doesn't have flying rule.
damn
Hm? It does have rules around flying. That is, it mostly just means freedom to move to places you could not otherwise.
Chapter 9 2014 PHB.
Flying creatures enjoy many benefits of mobility, but they must also deal with the danger of falling. If a flying creature is knocked prone, has its speed reduced to 0, or is otherwise deprived of the ability to move, the creature falls, unless it has the ability to hover or it is being held aloft by magic, such as by the fly spell.
New player, if you are lurking this channel rn, watch out for the DM making you go prone mid air or whipping out ranged creatures
And if flying turns into a trivializing problem. Move encounters indoors or add ranged foes.
Trident is a ranged weapon with topple mastery great for dropping flying targets to the dirt
What do you mean?
Ah, sorry, just backread the chat, I understand
Still waiting for throwing rages to not be scuffed af tho
Why watch out? Players can also do the same to creatures the dm uses fly for.. if you expect to cheese every encounter with fly, a good DM will challenge you and make things fun again.
Playing smart is as fun as being able to cheese sometimes
Also for extra safety, take Resilient:Con if enemy tries to use Topple(DM may set the save dc to something ridiculously high but its unlikely), it'll help out with concentration saves as well
Monsters don’t always or at all have masteries I think most prone effects are dex or strength saves
Dex ones are for ones with a mount? I think?
Let him fly
The first time my party encountered a beholder and it was hovering up in the air at the far end of what was basically a shooting gallery, they cast fly to get the fighter up to it.
Fun times for anti magic cone.
Did no one have any type of bow?
They did, they were not expecting the anti magic cone.
it's really annoying that i can't buy waterdeep: dragon heist physically outside of the US
i much prefer physical copies than digital but i don't seem to have much of a choice as it's not available on amazon or the UK wotc store
Try cex
i did check - it's out of stock
unless i'm buying a used copy for £80 it seems impossible to find
I'll explain later
managed to get it on the US amazon for pretty cheap overseas shipping
but i still wish there were more 2014 books on the wotc international stores
how do i play a Chaotic Good character?
my characters have mainly been evil or neutral some Lawful good but never Chaotic good so i'm stumped kinda
doing whatever is right by any means necessary?
i imagine a vigilante like aiden from watchdogs would be chaotic good. good dude, but questionable methods
Think Anti Hero
surely an antihero would be closer to evil alignment?
an objectively bad person that people support
honestly I think the best example in recent media of Chaotic Good is Spiderpunk from ATSV
would like Katniss Everdeen from the hunger games series be considered a Chaotic Good character?
cause usually when i think Chaotic good i think of rebellion
Neutral Good imo
Either that or neutral good, based on what i saw in the movies
There are no flying rules. It's just another form of Movement that allows you to go Up and Down in elevation.
i mean it highly depends on what your definition of "good" is and what violates that, like you can't really use a modern concept of "good" because all modern problems can be solved with diplomacy and nonviolence and the people who do not allow you to do so are objectively evil, but in a fantasy setting you don't actually have the modern technology or situation that allows for this circumstance and morality becomes a much larger answer than "if you hurt people on purpose you're probably evil"
If you're determined to use Alignment, these are the best guidelines I know of, from years of hammering away at understanding it.
**Lawful **means..
.. you like that rules and laws that govern behavior exist. That's it.
Lawful does not necessarily mean (although you can make a character that behaves like this if you are going to an extreme) ..
.. you follow every law to the letter. This is nonsensical, people's morality does not change simply because they cross a border, nor do they have some omniscient ability to tell when they are breaking a law.
.. that you simply follow a personal code. Everyone has a personal code unless their sense of self is so unbalanced that they don't even know themselves, so this isn't a good metric.
Chaotic means..
.. that you think of your own reasons for doing things before you think of what society or other people think. That's it.
Chaotic does not necessarily mean (although you can make a character that behaves like this if you are going to an extreme) ..
.. that you go out of your way to break laws or flout societal mores. This is childish and simplistic.
.. that you are insane.
**Good **means..
.. that you care for the wellbeing of others and would rather not harm them if at all possible. That's it.
**Evil **means..
.. that you don't care very much for the wellbeing of others, you mainly only care for yourself.
It's very simple:
Good: Your character is willing to sacrifice their comfort and health to defend the lives and dignity of other people
Chaotic: Your character is not willing to compromise their belief for traditions and laws.
That's it. It stops there.
Your character will break laws and traditions, and your character will defend the lives and dignity of other people, even at a personal cost.
Oh god, we talked about alignment one too many times, the great Incubus is here to educate us
It is indeed how I am summoned to this lowly plane of existence
Honestly, I think it's better to ignore Alignment and just write a decent custom personality.
This is your infernal calling
so my character is a drow in waterdeep, she broke away from Menzoberranzen and fled to the surface, she worshipps Elistraee as a druid of dreams, her background is scribe, she basically wants to "break the mold" of how Drow are perceived on the surface, would that goal be Chaotic Good or would that be something else
Goals do not have alignment, people do.
It's a fine character goal to have, doesn't really matter what Alignment it is, just leave Alignment blank and run with that personality.
Only creatures can have an alignment. Goals are not creatures
Animated Goal Post would like a word with you
I was about to say "unless it's a magically animated goal post". Damn you
Alignment really doesnt have a big impact on gameplay unless the dm is doing something specific with it
i understand that but acting withing my goal is what i'm trying to do, so what would my character look like if i was Chaotic good and had that goal in mind? thats what i'm asking, how do i play it and if it doesn't fit that what would?
the DoMT has a card that changes alignment which i've always disliked, as it's hard to just flip how you act as your character because of a single card draw
yea alignment is a two dimensional three by three system which does not have nearly enough coordinates or dimensions to possibly define even a fraction of a fraction of a percentage of what a person is
you can't tell players 'you're not allowed to do that because your alignment doesn't support it' without causing some disagreement
I could use that goal and probably make characters of each Alignment. I suggest you just stop worrying about Alignment.
It would look like a female drow, probably of average height and weight. A worshipper of Elistraee, so I would expect some religious iconography on her person. A scribe, so I would expect the usual calligraphy material on her person.
and if you have to utter the words "It's what my character would do" when trying to murder hobo oh boy will the DM (and the rest of the party) hate that
I would say that if CG is your gut reaction, go with that.
I think that attitude could fit something like CN ("anti-establishment"), CE ("make them pay"), or even neutral ("show the truth").
But to the above, yeah, I would just take the path of least resistance and move on! ✌️
my players tend to play their characters based on how they personally would act in response to a situation lol. we tend to ignore alignment
The free rules are HERE and they describe Chaotic good as thus: Chaotic Good creatures act as their conscience directs with little regard for what others expect. A rebel who waylays a cruel baron’s tax collectors and uses the stolen money to help the poor is probably Chaotic Good. And that's it, which is pretty sparse, but does that describe the kind of character you want to play?
You do not have to put anything in the Alignment spot, just so you know.
for example, i have a character who is absolutely convinced she is in the right because she and her people are being influenced by a God who cannot show itself nor speak to them and can be misinterpreted easily because of this, but its influence at the site of her village is so powerful that it actually tampers with their instinctual inclinations
Genuine question
Remaining spoiler free, but how bad could it possibly be traveling at night in an average DnD/CoS campaign?
she thinks she is Chaotic Good
she is Lawful Evil
this isn't a coherent system at all
lmao
More dangerous than by day, that's about it.
Not meaningfully worse than travelling at day. The problem is poor visibility, but poor visibility also affects your enemies
Okay, I'll be perfectly clear with this next part. I am trying to explain this, not complain about it
ok thank you, your input has been valuable
So in conclusion: Alignnment doesn't really matter for character creation and interpretation
I don’t like the alignment system it’s silly
if alignment wasn't so core to an outsider's perspective of what DND is, i would genuinely advocate for its removal
I do genuinely wish it were gone.
But I was asking because the Druid kept insisting that traveling/playing at night was very dangerous because of what could happen
Part of me agrees, we don't know what could happen. Other part of me is thinking "what could possibly be out there at night that would be a massive problem to deal with?"
Vampires and werewolves! :>
(I don’t actually know for sure that’s speculation)
hint hint: the moon is actually the eye of a much larger creature
(this is a joke made with no context to the original discussion)
What could happen that wouldn't happen by day?
Sadly there's big love for identifiers so there will still be a vast amount of people enjoying the idea of being called "chaotic this" or "evil that"
For context, we were stopped by Izak and a few guards on our way out of the town, and we finished the fight in less than 3 rounds. Only took, I think... 25 damage total tops, and most/all was just friendly fire from an AoE spell
The module quite literally has a more dangerous encounter table for night than it does for day, so
Maybe there’s some vampires and werewolves in the vampire and werewolf setting, they’re typically not out by day
But I’m sure it’ll be fiiiiiiine
That's what I want to know. Like, what would be out there that would be a massive problem? And if there is something, wouldn't it still be a problem during daytime?
Nope, nothing. There is literally nothing that could happen only at night and not by day.
yea, if it wasn't so fundamental to what people who haven't played DND think DND is i would say to discard it entirely, but because of its iconic aspects to what DND is(n't) i would say it should just be explicitly listed as optional
Werewolves are not any more nocturnal than anyone else.
You're spiraling. Pretty sure you've been over this before already. Is there a point to this that is going to matter or change our entire collective opinion that you should leave this group?
So yeah, travel by night if you wish
I've calmed down for the most part and am thinking of compromises to make with the party. Wizard and Paladin are pretty great to hang out with
Didn't you just have a session with them? Kind of your "last chance" kind of thing?
How did it go? ✌️
I see I am missing some key context here
Probably a bad idea to stay with this group. I think I'm going to disengage from this topic entirely and no longer reply to anything regarding it.
I do appreciate that it's been less and less prevalent through the editions.
So, the current issue is that other party members are insistent that we don't travel at night. But maybe I can let them deal with these next few combats, get a level up, and try to show them that nighttime wouldn't be the huge issue they think it is
Oh. Sessions are Saturday afternoon
If they don't want to travel at night, who cares?
I kind of do care... hard not to as a vampire spawn Gloomstalker
yea maybe in a hypothetical 6e or 5.5(2)e we'll have it marked as optional and have a little notation in the Big Book of Words that it isn't a good system for quantifying people
The problem is that there indeed slightly higher chances of getting lost, and poorer visibility. Though that could play in your favour
I'm sorry, your characterr is a vampire spawn?
Price to pay for resurrection
As for the visibility part, the point holds even less water when you realize all of us have dark vision. Not a foolproof plan, but far from sitting ducks
I dunno not wanting to travel by night seems pretty understandable to me
Frankly I think you're too worked up about your party not going out of their way maximise your new playstyle.
just have someone cast Light on one of your weapons for as long as you wanna be seen tbh, unless you aren't playing with friendly fire then you should be fine as far as Gloomstalking goes
It's a Team Game, not a You game.
I think there's a big difference between trying to maximize something and going "if we travel at night, I won't burn up like a Minecraft skeleton"
I've had about 50 collective sessions of CoS and never did the pcs travel by night, it's a thing.
Darkvision has extremely limited range.
Wear a cloak.
what is dnd about? i understand it's partially about collaborative storytelling, but what aspects are there outside of that?
This seems like something you should discuss with them, not us
Can’t really help you here
What do you all think of the Exploring Eberron book that lanuched on D&D Beyond?
It's Make Beleive with Friends, that's pretty much it.
60-120 feet isn't that bad at all. Definitely limiting, but not that bad. Also, much harder to sneak up on a party when someone has a 20 on Passive Perception
You're there to have fun with people you prefferably like.
*make believe with rules and funny math rocks
i'm asking as someone who's familiar with freeform rp
The most fun you can have with your brain, involving dice
Don't have one yet
No, that's not enough. For travelling, that's nothing.
Also, I'm more concerned with getting the upsides than avoiding the downsides
i don't have a particular understanding of the intent behind the instantiation of "rules"
When something is following you, it's tracking you from far more than 120 feet
not that it's not appealing, but it's something i don't really get
When you're travelling ideally you want to see far further than 120 feet. If you're limited in range to that, your chances of getting lost or of being attacked drastically increase
But again, it's not really a big difference
there's dice rolling (very fun :DDDDDDD) and some basic addition and some aspects of lawyer simulator on top of the storytelling
I guess you do have a point. But I am grasping at straws for a compromise
You mean you don't understand why people aren't just freeform storytelling without rules to limit their imagination?
basically, yeah o.o
Rules give you a framework and reference point, and sets expectations
what's the advantage to this?
I think that for many people, the idea that there is some sort of a simulation of a world that is not just made up as they go along is more fun. There are also people who like the idea of being able to show mastery of the rules of a game and gain progression and "win" at things.
Inspiration, having an actual framework to work off of, having everyone on the same page, etc. etc.
when you have an infinite sandbox and infinite fingers, it is very hard to decide on what to do with your infinite box of infinite fingers because none of them look like anything, but by painting some of the fingers, you can get something that doesn't look like nothing, and then you can set things up off of that
People who like to be challenged and master skills don't like it when they win just because someone else said so. They want to actually achieve things with mastery over something with defined rules.
Otherwise it's just Calvinball, where people make up rules as they go along. Might be fun, but doesn't feel like you're actually achieving anything.
Those upsides being?
Having actual defined rules also helps avoid Schoolyard level "My infinity plus Sword ignores your stupid Infinity Defense, I win forever goodbye."
So I guess we're getting somewhere.
On one end, most of the dangers we fight will not be limited to time of day.
On the other end, vision will definitely be a problem for a majority of the party should something try and track us.
But wouldn't that be where I benefit as a Ranger?
The only ones I can see is that the downsidee apply to your enemies too
Invisibility + Sharpshooter
What I am hearing is that you want to nerf the entire team in order to buff yourself.
Sharpshooter also works by day
It is quite dependent on advantage, though
And there are plenty of ways to get advantage
Which, I learned the hard way at level 2. Trying to use that without something to help just means you kind of miss. A lot.
take the Eldritch Adept feat for Devil's Sight and then cast Darkness exactly where you're standing and you get the same results
the mastery aspect makes a lot of sense to me.
i guess it's less a problem of "adding rules" i have and maybe more just like. some kinds of storytelling will never be possible in a group setting. and that's like fine i guess. that's fine.
iirc you can anchor it to an object that is being carried so you can anchor it to your bow and move around too
Asking "why rules?" is a different question to "why groups?"
you cannot be in the line of sight of an enemy
yeah definitely. asking "why groups" would be silly. i just misdiagnosed what was going on at first. i had thought it was a rules thing when it wasn't
Before you start thinking on this further, bear in mind that the Hide Action is, obviously, not something you can do in front of people.
Because waving your hands and going "You can't see me." Doesn't magically make eyeballs stops working. Which is something too many people seem to forget.
Wow. Did not think i coukd set a world record for "Back to the Drawing Board" speed runs
No offense. That just fell apart fast
what level are you? are you near an ASI? do you have TCE?
Hide is also redundant with invisibility, you don’t gain any benefit from being hidden and invisible except that while hidden enemies definitely don’t know where you are
i am still asking you to cast Darkness on a lantern at your hip and take the Eldritch Adept feat to get Devil Sight so you can see through the Magical Darkness
5
And yes
What about shadowsorcerer?
The problem with that is they'd have to multiclass to gain access to Darkness.
Rangers can't get Darkness?
And my MC choice will be Rogue
It's not in their list
oh, damn, i thought they had it
Huh, feels like they should be able to cast that
i know, right?
And I'm gonna be honest, I think you're trying way too hard to base yourself around Umbral Sight
Yeah. Under other circumstances, my Wizard or Druid could help. But the Druid especially hates it when I ask for this sort of thing
i mean i think an aspect of it is Vampire Spawn which means they would be instantly incinerated upon the sun witnessing them
Hello, friends 🧐
Overly relying on it being Dark leads to a problem you will find throughout the entirety of your campaign. The sun exists, torches are a thing, magical lights are common.
Hello Tokii
Okay, just for context, my current damage with a heavy crossbow is 1d10 + 4 per attack
The idea is that darkness is advantage, and advantage means Sharpshooter
So it becomes 1d10 + 14 per attack now
Most things and places have people that like being able to see. Therefore rarely are you going to be able to readily use darkness to your advantage.
if your Wizard can cast it, just Circle Cast it with them so you can have it at your hip for like 8 hours, or get the Druid to join in for 24(?)
Light doesn’t pass through the area of darkness, so if you cast darkness in the air could you create a non magical shadow on demand?
this is also possible, but it wouldn't follow you
Boblin the goblin shall return. With his breakdancing gang
Both of those are very unlikely. Druid especially, she likes to rant about me asking for help on that
I don't wanna deal with more of that if I can help it
Tonight is the night I play my Bugbear Ranger 🧐
Reach out and poke somebody with 15ft of Reach
Go out and bug some bears :D
you can easily shoot her with the "dawg asking for collaboration in a team game is a minimal expectation how could you mad at me?"
What character clichés would you imagine in a party made up entirely of druids from different cycles?
Wildfire Druid pyromaniac
Boogieman x2
Evil Druid that exclusively propagates invasive species
His name IS actually Bogey lol
Hi. I heard the tarrasque could only be defeated with a wish spell in older editions of dnd, but i can't find any book that mentions it. Does anyone know where that rule was introduced?
XD
It's Bo-gee
Not
Boogie
Tried that. It did not end well. Taking a small break from that server for a bit. Should give you a basic idea on the level of frustration it caused me
I'm gonna be honest, you're probably just too fixated on Maximal Optimization in a group that doesn't much care about such things.
Again
This isn't about maximum optimization
This is just me wanting advantage at the ready to rapid fire sharpshooter attacks
Maybe it is in character?
Given you're bending yourself out of shape to try and get your +10 damage without too much of a penalty? It does sure seem like it's about optimization
He's a depressed Bounty Hunter that works for the Zhentarim and has a wife that hates him 🔥
Bounty Hunter too? Nice
"My wife hates me, but, I think I'd rather be home over this shit..."
Reminds me of the one gorilla meme with his wife
+10 extra damage per attack is pretty huge, though
Flower Power hippy Land Druid who is all peace and love, but actually terrifying once angered.
Please let him find happiness by the end of the campaign I want my poor boogeyman to be happy :(
The Cat freak Shepherd Druid
Not really helping your case.
My character's main thing is built around sniping
He'll probably die lol
It's Descent into Avernus and brother boy only has a +1 to Con due to stat rolls lol
And you can do that, without sharpshooter, and fixating on being in darkness 24/7 in every combat.
Noooooooooooo 😭
TO get the maximum amount of shooty gloomstalker goodness.
Did you find a barrel yet?
Grim life of being a bugbear
As a sniper i would rather take the lucky feat than arbitrary invisibility
You didn't see my boss fight at level 2
Missed both sharpshooter shots because no advantage, then did 5 damage and a 22 to hit the one time I didn't sharpshooter
Advantage is lowkey mandatory to get good Sharpshooter moments
With my luck, I'd take Skulker for a Sniper
I believe in him, he can do it!
That's level 2 buddy. It's low level, you're not going to be doing 50 damage.
Sessions are Saturday afternoons
Good point
I can see why your group acts very irritably to you.
Is there a place for maps on this discord to post and to take?
It isn't the damage that is the issue. The larger point was the accuracy, especially because it's only gone up one point from 8 to 9 over all these levels
And then, soon, I'll be playing a Warforged Circle of the Forged Druid fella soon
Naming the lad Sentinel because he's gonna have the Mark of Sentinel and, well, he's a bodyguard lol
thx
Problem with playing the first levels is that making specific abilities is really not that viable. Youn need like minimum 4 i would say but even thats a stretch. Lvl 1-3 you are basically less capable than a soldier in my eyes.
Autobots! Rollou-
Nah, he's gonna be more inspired by...
Ramattra from Overwatch personality wise :p
Since I think a Robo revolutionary fits Eberron
Anyways, that's my 2 cents on the matter. If anyone has any good advice for how I can get advantage often on attacks as a Gloomstalker (soon to be Assassin as well), let me know
Use PWT and really sneak around
Afterall, with the destruction of Cyre and House Cannith, it's probably hard for new Warforged to be created if they even are at all anymore
That doesn't require supposedly handicapping or otherwise needing synergy from the team
Use high ground to your advantage
How would high ground work?
What is the build so far? And are there any extra rules of note?
Worked for Obi
Naturally. But seriously
Oh nvm it'd be a homebrew rule
Sniper build. Sharpshooter, Piercer, CBE coming up
high ground is only in baldur gate
Oh thought you had the character already. But is it lvl 2 only?
They're level 5 now
For you. I'd go with Skulker & Alert
No, we are lvl 5. I just mentioned level 2 because failing to hit the boss for meaningful damage made me really need to prioritize accuracy, mostly advantage
Does 2024 dnd have samurai fighter? They get advantage as a bonusaction in legacy
not to mention that your luck is god awful
Samurai is xgte i think, but it is compatible with 2024
samurai isnt out for 2024 yet
Not reprinted but you can still use
i don't know a single DM who doesn't allow legacy expanded rules to be used alongside the 2024 core rules
Wait rogue has bonusaction aim now right?
steady aim, yes
that was a tasha rule but its a base rule in 2024 yeah
Skulker is a little enticing for later. But define "lightly obscured"
weak
Its a light level below bright and after dark
Well technically... that's Dim Light.
Obscurement below heavily and above none
Dim Light
Don't mention it
Seriously. Don't mention it
useless
"such as dim light, patchy fog, or moderate foliage"
Kay...
minos prime
i just installed D&D from Steam each time i try to create account its redirect me to 404 page, anyone know how can i create account?
Define "Installed D&D"
There we go. I can get that at a later level
how do you install dnd
do you mean dungeons and dragons online, the mmo?
Because that's kind of like saying I downloaded more RAM
i downloaded dnd chat
yes
that may not be a question anyone here can help you with, although the link to the game's discord server is .gg/ddo
you are living in my shadow
they can definitely help
What? It’s a pen and paper game. How?
Wait there’s an MMO? Neat!
there's been an mmo for a 14 years, it's just incredibly niche
Anyways, Skulker could definitely help me get said Invisibility without total darkness
There's been a great many D&D games over the years
Is it that Neverwinter game with Strahd in it?
tbh i thought this server for the pc game
No this is the official D&D server, mostly aimed at 5e, as it's what WOTC is selling.
Thanks for the help, chat. I appreciate it
neverwinter nights is a separate thing, didn't know it had strahd in it
What the hell would Strahd be doing in Neverwinter?
this is for the TTRPG D&D, not the videogame. it's easy to mix the two up
Strahd got a sick animated trailer as DLC or an expansion or whatever it’s called
thanx
Neverwinter nights has a few of the modules as add ons
Well, that was a rather angry remark from that person
But eh. I got bigger fish to fry
It's not a busy channel, but there's #dnd-media here. That channel is for talking about other D&D media like TV shows, movies, and video games.
"Hello Darkness my old friend~" 🎵
ok thanx sir
So, DM does allow swapping feats on level up
weak
Go straight for the Jugular: ASI +2 DEX
So I could also take Skulker with this new one. Although I wish it didn't have to come at the cost of the other good-
Could you not? Please?
...come at the cost of the other good feats. I could swap it out for Poisoner of i really needed to
ASI +2 Dex is very good yeah
weve been over why posion is the worst damage in the game
Not really needed tho. Rolled stats, CBE will push it up to 20
Yesterday, my party almost went so hard on a prank, my character would've left the group for good
it's also weird that there's Poison (the damage) and Poisoned (the condition) and neither are really that good
its cause so many things are resistant or are just flat out immune to the damage as well as the condition
aren't like, all of the Underdark enemies resistant to it? or is that the Abyss?
you'll never see my cloudkill coming
So, if i wanted to
I could make a loop with the Poisoned and Restrained conditions. Requires setup, but is definitely funny
IT's a side effect of WOTC runnin on the game design of "Slap a bunch of resitances and immunities on to crank CR."
My 2014 Warlock is TRYING okay? (Primordial Snake patron)
Don't forget Poison, the rock band from the 1980s.
theres a player race thats immune to posion for gods sake
WOTC for the entirety of 2014 D&D was BAD at monster design
lol
Anyways, gotta head to sleep
and Poisson, fish that live in france or something
Catch ya later, chat. Thanks for the help
i have a spread sheet of all monsters that resistant/immune to damage types in dnd
And it's probably like near 80% for immune to poisoned.
There's a chance you're either a stardew valley player or an optimizer
Because they slapped that on Everything
Force: -2
Radiant: -10
Thunder: -38
Psychic -74
Bludgeoning: -132
Necrotic: -140
Slashing: -156
Percing: -160
Acid: -160
Lightning -238
Cold: -316
Fire -348
Poison -778
this is immunity btw
_>
wow that posion is a lowest negetive number
i mean if you keep manacles you could just do that to them because Poisoned is also Ability Rolls but other than that idk if it's helpful
negative 778? oh boy!
there are 430 more monsters that are immune to posion rather then FIRE
Does ignoring resistance also count for immunity
With the Immunity to poison being basically free, you'd expect the majority of D&D settings to include nothing but POISON SWAMPS ala FromSoft
for stuff like posioner then no
No, Resistance is Resistance, Immunity is Immunity
So you can't even bypass immunity through a cost
getting around immunity is nearly impossible for a player to do
unless its "non magical"
Resistance is Half Damage, ignoring Resistance means you full damage to Resistant things, Immunity stil flat out ignores.
Then I shall homebrew poison to surpass force
Good luck getting it approved, foolish player
I think even if you give something a Vulnerability via certain spells, Immunity still doesn't care.
I will become the dm if it is what it takes
There's a warlock that ignores poison immunity in book of ebon tides, also gets a poison hunters mark, it's not particularly strong.
it would even out
yep, sadly
so if you give something that has immunity to posion vulnerbility it would become resistant
As far as I'm aware there's no such rule that states that.
true power becomes true resonposablity
i just wish there were more diverse things like Poison That Blinds You
no
immunity means you take no damage. vulnerability means you take double damage. double of 0 is still 0
no matter what order you apply it in, Immunities turn the damage to zero
That's what spells are for. WOTC couldn't even be bothered to do Diseases outside of like ONE adventure.
nvm then
as long as you have a pretty linear storyline, it's fairly easy to DM a oneshot
To the point that they just ripped Paladin Immunity to disease out in 2024
quick mathz
yea i could cast Blind/Deaf but i want more ways to make people blind
that just proves my point that getting around elemental immunity is nearly impossible for a player
sand
yeap
Noxious poisoner feat (or epic boon?)
Requires the poisoner feat
Your poison damage ignores resistance and immunity, and enemies who normally have neither resistance or immunity to poison damage become vulnerable to any poison damage you deal
time for melee attacks to go all out.
why did sorcerer get buffed btw?
why wouldnt it?
Because everything got buffed pretty much
A DM that does not let you temporarily blind someone with sand is a bad DM. THis is my only opinion oiin the quality of DMs
it was wizard lite in 2014 too
wizard spell list sorcerery points
Except for Paladin, that got slightly nerfed and didn't change much
profen in con saves at level 1
Now poison needs good spells
cloud kill
only thing that set it apart from wizard was sub classes and metamagic. might as well not have existed
bro divine soul is RIGHT THERE
I will make cloud serial kill
... thats subclass
It had fewer spell choices then Wizard, but not by much.
sorcerer is one of the best classes in the game
My Attempt at having fun
But I guess i need to make more tough calls if I am to survive without more direct planning with the party
hence lite
i think it's called like Ray of Sickness which isn't totally terrible
and they just gave it innate sorcery for whatever reason
only thing that set it apart from wizard was sub classes and metamagic. might as well not have existed
I am aiming for stuff that would make chronurgy wizards blush
what about there saves
Then you'll be dissapointed because chronurgy wizards are just wacky unbalanced homebrew pretty much
minimal. you can pick up resilient con
yeah but that saves you the feat
half caster full caster muticlass?!
If they're homebrew, then why do they get recommended so often
were so back
They're Third Party stuff
... sorcerors are multiclassed with paladin and warlock so much
not as much since you know the rule changes
palasorlock is stil a decent build though?
not worth having to be level 6 tho
i multiclassed Warlock and Fighter to make a theoretical three-quarters caster
Imagine they get the short end of the stick when brought into 24, and their features are like
"Level 3: you gain a digital clock. Once it's battery fades, this feature is lost"
huh?
all classes get there subclass at level 3
...
3*
you know what the usual palasorlock level spreads were...?
Playing DnD made me realize I use a lot of filler words like "okay" "um" and "yeah", gonna have to change that
i primarily use the Fighter level for Push mastery and equipment
i've realised i start a lot of sentences with "you guys" when i DM
im going to push you off a cliff
i got spider climb
I wish there was a barbarian specialized on unarmed
dhamphir lineage does wonders for my safety
Yeah, made me realize I also stutter sometimes
you still fall 500ft a second
i start climbing
in 6 seconds i mean
I feel like they're the best suited class to punch people in the throat, but only monks get to do it properly
i dont like the new dhampier compared to the lineage
yeah, loss of ancestral legacy is something im not a fan of
Math does not check out
which books have dhampir? i was looking to play one
creatures in dnd don't have a falling speed, they technically just shift from one elevation to the other in a single round
van ritchen and astarion's book of hunger. the latter is digital only
thats just how dnd works as stated in xanther guide
otherwise, falling is instantaneous, regardless of distance
but they do..?
i swear they don't
i coerced the DM into giving me Breastplate (later purchased some Halfplate+2), a Warhammer, Glaive, and Heavy Crossbow, plus i took Repelling Blast for my EB so i have like 3 different ways to keep people away from me and one way to stand one square from them and still use melee
500 ft per round is an optionl ruling
Ah. I was using 9.8m/s squared
D&D 5e, a creature falls immediately to the ground, but optional rules in Xanathar's Guide to Everything state they descend up to 500 feet instantly, and an additional 500 feet at the end of each of their subsequent turns. Damage is (1d6) bludgeoning per 10 feet, up to a (20d6) maximum
oh damn okay, never knew that
do note that xanathar is technically optional
true
Look y'all it's this or terminal velocity calculations
that's my bad lol. i thought i'd read/heard somewhere that falling creatures just fall whatever required distance in 6 seconds
Where is this from
nah they just splat
thats the base phb ruling
Xanther guide to everything
oh right lol, i'm half-correct. xanathar's makes more sense though
Based 👍
losing your footing for 1 second then immediately going back down to the base of the mountain 😭
i assume you prefer the van richten one?
I mean that specific quote.
myself
what's the difference between the two?
yeah, but the new one getting necrotic damage resistance is also pretty neat
i'll have to see what's cheaper lol. a dhampir swashbuckler rogue has been on my mind lately
yeah but dhampiers shouldnt just be dhampiers your suppose to half something half vampire '
not to mention they removed the hungers
new one:
- lost ancestral legacy
- lost no need to breath
- bite rider effect is limited within the next minute
- gained necrotic resistances
- bite can use str on the attack roll
the hungers was a flavor table
Writing this D&D campaign is thoroughly exhausting to get right 😅 I’m only 20% done and I have half of the world built with 2/3 of the story still a mystery
a lot of 2024 just threw flavor out the window for combat
Astarion's book of hungers
Looks inside
No hungers
that was reccomendations. also, astarions is literally a vampire oriented book, so, makes sense they focused on the vampire flavor
nad it makes me angry
You'll find a lot of that in dnd books tbh
you may burn yourself out if you do it all in one go. i'm halfway through my campaign and still don't fully know how it'll end
take breaks and decide the next steps of your plot after you've been through the world a bit
Astarion is the name and face of the book anyway.
yeah but its a lot more noticeable in the new nooks
Eh its prevalent in older stuff too
he was more of a spawn rather then a dhampier tbh
the two are often used interchangably
Its basically a biography when you actually read it xd
Ghosts of Saltmarsh.
Is about sailing around doing stuff in saltmarsh
they shouldnt as spawn still burn in daylight
I’m taking a break for a bit to prevent burnout. I’m mapping out the next steps but I just got to where they reach a rising action moment and understand the worlds circumstances more. I have…16 chapters to go?
like, jander sunstar has dhamphir/spawn kids
Tomb of Annihilation.
It's a jungle hexcrawl for 90% of the module
dhampier dont have supersunlight sensitive or whatever its called
ofc, kid in question resents jander and wants to kill him
sounds daunting - ensure you're leaving enough wiggle room for players to be making their own decisions during your campaign though. it's a collaborative story, not a novel
plus the way dhampier and spawn are also different
besides a very loose wider plot, i only plan a session at a time
also spawn can become true vampires while dhampiers cannot
am i the only person who doesn't like how baldur's gate-themed the 2024 books have been so far?
Corporations gonna milk.
The baldurs gate heros became prominent heroes in faerun so it makes sense they'd show up in FR books tbh
Im doing my best to leave openings for story alteration and various possible endings so that I can work with the possible endings they choose or whatever they decide to do along the way. I think I have enough for 2 sessions so Im stopping here until I can playtest and take notes from what went well, what’s missing, and what didn’t get explored or didn’t go well.
i do wish there was more on waterdeep, but i think they did a good joke showing the dale lands, icewind dale, and calimshan well. im tempted to run icewind dale because of the new book
baldur's gate is yet another reason why dnd became so popular again
I…never finished baldurs gate
Waterdeep greed
I'd never have touched DnD if not for bg3
see
I want to finish it
fair enough, but i do get a little burnt out seeing all of the bg3 characters when there's so much more other interesting lore that could be touched on
that said, im running Descent into Avernus literally today, so i need that expanded BG section
yeah it's a little overmilked, they should really get to making an equally likeable dnd game
i love descent into avernus such a good book
i'm the same, but now that i've played more d&d than i have bg3, i'm just a bit sick of seeing Karlach or Astarion everywhere
thats a take. its one of the worst written books ive seen
that aint gonna happen probably
Oh that reminds me, only the story is homebrewed. I’m following RAW stuff and PHB because I don’t want to make it too complicated for people to follow stats and resources.
true its just of my favorite books
Never played past the tutorial, maybe we can play sometime
Great pfp BTW. Loved that movie
I know, which sucks. BG3 will probably forever be the only good Dnd-to-video game adaptation
only saving grace for DiA for me is the existence of Arkhan the Cruel
Thank ya thank ya
BG3 was lightning in a bottle
the only premade campaign i've seen not be called the worst is curse of strahd lol
All Warlock (next dnd IP game) can do is not do the same thing its dev studio did with Dark Alliance 2021 (they fired majority of the people behind that game so theres that)
youre telling me i can still use dragons in hell? sure, sign me the [Redacted] up!
what CoS is is complicated, but iconic
the first book ive ever played Lost Mine of Phandelver
mostly due to the team behind it - larian is an incredibly good development studio. BG3 would NOT have succeeded as much if it was made by microsoft or ubi
I’m trying really hard to just have an ending area that the party can enjoy rather than an ending point so the story adapts to what they’re about and how they tie in. I also picked an item that each player of each class would find and become important to their backstory near the end
oh, Phandelver is peak
i loved every second ng;
Phandelver was my first too
Phandelver is easy to run and easy to enjoy, love it
that's pretty cool tbf, i need to get into more specialised magic items
My wife even enjoyed it
only official campaign i've ran is HOTDQ, never played in one
You poor soul
i had a LOT of fun with hoard
I basically just found an item that either required a specific class’ attunement or something of a significant value to a race so that way the history leading up to them tied in and allows them to choose how or why it’s important now
You deserve so much better
It's kind of a meme at this point. Tyranny of Dragons really isn't a bad campaign
ive never seen anybody run it
It's like 4/10 id say
Certainly a lot better than many others from 5e. (Looking at you SKT)
chapter 4 SUCKS. it's a good plot but some of the execution is awful - i changed a lot of it from chapter 4 up to skyreach
is eye of ruin any good?
you will not slander my best boy like that
not the worst but its chapter 4 can really ruin a run of it
If Tyranny of Dragons is 4/10, then I don't know what that makes of Storm King's Thunder
I am also making sure I play it as myself so I can feel what I’d want to happen as a PC instead of a DM so I know “Oh I wanna explain my reasoning or talk about my backstory here” so I can catch those opportunities and give the players the steering wheel
its... a module
negatives
the travel rules in chapter 4 of hoard are literally just "roll a d20 for EVERY day of this 40 day travel. on an 18, something awesome happens"
It's a waste of ink and you know it.
SKT is -9/10
yeah it plays from 10 all the way up to level 20
one of my best campaigns used SKT
vecna: eye of ruin
the giant strongholds keep it from being a -10/10
As a gaming product, it's mediocre at best. As a work of "art" it is souless, cynical and borderline evil.
i will not be hearing slander, especially not from a fiend who wants to bring down the ordning and drag all of giantkind away form annam's creation
I live and breathe hatred of SKT
We both know it wasn't SKT, you were just stealing ideas from it.
SKT is best as something to be stripped from its barely skinned bones
... ok, its pretty good if you steal the general dungeons and thats it
If you had actually ran it as is, you would be in a sanitorium from the 30s.
Yeah as written it is uncontested worst module
i suppose it's difficult in any capacity to create a premade campaign that works for any and all party compositions whilst keeping the plot completely detached from them
its just "here's dungeons, go buy SCAG and go crazy!"
and you go buy SCAG and youre like "alright, what the hell am i supposed to do with this"
whats the best module in your opinion
sell it at scalping prices
module or campaign?
I mean you would have been so traumatized by how bad it is, you would have time travelled back to the thirties to get a cell in one of those horrible old-time sanatorium where people usually sent their family members to be lobotomized
waterdeep dragon heist or dungeon of the mad mage
i may or may not be biased to waterdeep now
dragon heist is my pick too, i'm a little ways into it with my current group but it's already more fun than hoard of the dragon queen
Curse of Strahd, Waterdeep, Phandelver
But mostly, the anthologies are superior
i love infinite staircase as well
Most modules have issues or need to change, what makes a good module imo is that changing or fixing it is worth the work
If only because even an average adventure anthology is naturally superior to a good longform campaign
also i really dislike that waterdeep's gold currency is called dragons. every time i mention "100 dragons" to my party, they assume the city is/was under attack
Which makes ToD conflicting
for anthologies, its:
- radiant citadel
- saltmarsh
- Drgon delves
- candlekeep
A good idea for ToD is to not tell the players its ToD
One has been forgotten and screams in horror
i feel like im missing one
ToD?
Yawning Portal.
cause theyll expect dragons and will have to wait a long long time
is tales from the yawning portal any good?
Yawning Portal is good
There's no bad anthologies, just the occasional mid adventure in one
tyranny of dragons - it's Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat combined into one
oh. ive played, like, one dungeon from it. but zariel was the one running it for some reason, so i feel like i cant speak on yawning portal from the changes made
As with any anthology, it varies. But all adventures inside are above 5/10
ok
sees name: check out
Like if you want a Dragon module, always go Dragon Delves
yeah yeah
idk
Only ToD if you wanna throw the whole first half of the adventure in the Forge to be rebuilt, and tinkered
planescape uses a different cosmology to forgotten realms right? i've never understood the outlands and all that
i swear im gonna play it within the year incubus, please dont drag me down to the abyss
its the epicenter of the multiverse, everything in the great wheel cosmology surrounds it
i lowkey kinda hate planescape not the adventure itself but because i swaer if ONE more player ask me for a anti matter rifle or a laser rifle im going to skin someone alive
oh right. where does the material plane sit in terms of the outlands? by the 2024 DMG, the material plane is in the centre, which is what confused me upon reading planescape lol
wherever its from
well, yesnt. Sigil itself sits in the astral plane last i remember
dungeon master's guide
i love how confusing everything is
thats dnd for you
when youo deal with multiple planes of existences, and a myriad of settings, it adds up yeah
My major issue with Planescape is something truly unforgivable. /j
My health won't let me run more than one 5e game and I really wanna run a Planescape game so how dare it be so damn good
i had to read the 3e planescape book on a pdf just to get a general grasp of the planes
another thing that gets on my nerves as a dm is people who try to apply physics to magic
in what way?
Wym
like no you cant spawn mage in inside that guys LUNGS
Ye I'm glad the new DMG calls out people like that
my take: dnd physics is magic. Magi, Exploring the Labyrinthe style
Oh ljke people going “can I create water in his lungs????”
i mean, the way i'd rule it is someone's lungs isn't a place you can see
there are mutiple spells that go outside the bounds of physics but ok
no, as in magic is just their rules of physics
keywords their rules
exactly that
not ours
Yeah that would irritate me too
people think they’re being clever but it’s really just laziness and a cop out
If someone tries that at my table, they hear a sarcastic chuckle then are reduced to atoms by the sheer power of the sun.
and/or trying to meme
the full concentrated power of the sun
there was a player that was saying im gonna use create water to make a 10 gallon ice cube above his head to crush him
in the palm of my hand?
Material plane is on the center.
Think of the Planescape as a spinning wheel and Sigil is the axle under the center spinning it.
Okay that’s kinda funny ngl
then there was another player who said im gonna cast sun beam through a magnifying glass to increase its damage
Kinda why Sigil and the Outlands are shaped like that
i seriously don't think i have the brain capacity to fully understand the planes lol
i wonder why its not the city of wheels
i'd allow that, that's sick as hell
dont worry, neither does anyone in world.
I mean at least they’re trying to be creative? they should probably be applying it to other things though
wotc writers room is just infinite monkeys on infinite typewriters
yeah but when saying im gonna be doing stuff like 20d10 i gotta say no
it would not surprise me if that was the current case
I understand the planes but my brain is weird
i understand the plans cause i came from 3.5 it
i refused to to even touch 4e cause nasty
Planescape is ljke the middle part of a spinning wheel or something
need a little bit of neuro-spiciness to understand the secrets of hte multiverse
i came from 5.5e last year so unfortunately i know nothing about the deep lore that was 3rd edition and previous
Admittedly my only real exposure to Planescape is planescape torment
i should play it...
My exposure is from my Tuesday game currently
dude i kinda miss 3e because force dragons were the coolest thing ever
3e was good
Tho it's mostly just Sigil
i wanna run planescape but someone here will kill me if i dont play torment first
4e was uhhhh. Yikes
they were also the strongest thing in the game by that point
It's not hard. It's just a model representation, it's not meant to show how they actually look.
even still, there's just what feels like a lot of conflicting lore depending on where you're looking - and no book contains the absolute full picture
the great wyrm force dragons were cr 59 fun fact
Good morning dnd pals
That's just part of being a long time product that keeps on going
Although I think 4e streamlined some stuff well, overall 4e was just bad
It was easy for me to grasp when I first started playing AD&D, because I was an avid Dr. Strange and Thor comic reader. And both characters frequented various planes of existence
4e was good as a system, it was just handled badly by the company.
it was a whole another game which is why it was disliked so much
Why was 4e so infamous? I started playing in 5e
5e is just 3e but a lot of the stupidly complex stuff removed
Yeah that’s not even getting into the writing choices
like the cr cap being 30 instead of 60
They based it off of MMOs which were big at the time which made the gameplay different from 3.x
i can't remember what edition it was, but i swear there were like 40th level spellcasters at one point
dnd mmo was BOUND to fail ngl
lol I know it’s one of those old Reddit jokes which is why I avoided it but yeah. DND is not an mmo
But it had a lot of corporate related issues which were the actual big problems.
Neverwinter is alright
im not gonna lie i also miss the bigger size charts
What I mean is that there were Roles in dnd.
AD&D had no limits (for humans) on what level they could be for any class. Basic D&D had upper limits of 36th level
like Colossal and Colossal +
Defenders, Leaders, Controllers, and Strikers.
Oh yeah remember when nonhumans had level caps for no reason lol
Classes fit under those umbrellas with their own role powers and class powers
i like monster roles
3e level cap was level 30 im pretty sure
The most popular 3rd party monster source book is just a ripped from 4es monster manyals
No there were reasons for the level limits, because the non-humans had innate abilities, which gave them an advantage from the begining.
and then there was the stupid crazy epic boons
A lot of 4e has led to a lot of popular tabletop products
true
Dnd still kind of has roles but it’s more like expert or priest
4e itself was just handled badly and before it's time.
Yeah didnt pathfinder originate from people being upset about 4e
i agree with that
Like what a lot of people you see here and on reddit want is 4e hilariously enough
path finder is just 3e but a few things are added in
The most liked parts of 5e came from 4E
true
First edition, certainly, Second edition is a different thing entirely
2nd edition is more modeled after its predecessor and 4e
second edition is.. interesting
But those were already available as options in 1e or Basic editions
I haven't played TSR era dnd.
ive played so many ttrpgs
But yeah I think a good comparison is 4e is like a Van Gough of ttrpgs.
cyberpunk red pathfinder 1e and 2e dnd 3e 3.5e 4e 4.5e and 5e and 5.5e
Not liked while alive (4e was liked but not to the degree of other editions) but after it was gone and as time went on
cyberpunk red was really fun ngl
I mean, you can still go bigger then Gargantuan, litteraly nothing is stoping you, it's just basically where they thought was enough
Cause 4e was inspiration for a lot of current successful other ttrpg works
we need to go BIGGER
Gargantuan is a category
Its just the catch all for anything bigger than 20x20 ft^2
like the aspect of a god should not be the same as a oversized god zilla ripoff
MCDMs stuff
Daggerheart took some combat rules from 4e
Pf2e
Lancer
again, categories
i know i just think they should bring back Colossal
Tiamat can still be the size of a city and be Gargantuan while a Tarrasque can still be building sized and be in the same category
or just Gargantuan+
Then of course 2024 adapting more 4e into 5e
But if they add a size above gargantuan, what is stopping them from making another above that? Then another and another
that said, Greatwyrms being bigger than cities will always amaze me
Also what will the hit dice look like?!
Colossal+
How’s everyone doing
Gargantuan covers litteraly everything 4x4 squares and up. It doesn't restrict you, slapping a new word on for 5x5, or 6x6 doesn't really add anything
But there’s no point
I usually keep the standard Gargantuan size on maps but for non-combat I'll use more accurate sizes.
Exactly.
i need to express just big the many handed one is
And once again, hitdice, if they did add a colossal size, would its hit dice be a d100?
Then use your words in describing it :V
the Theros version was Gargantuan and depicted as the size of mountains
What's it's size
size of mountiants as never ending said
And since we’ve opened the blood gates, if they make another size above that, what will that ones hit dice be?
still a d20
The Fire Giant Scion being bigger than mountains
das the Theros one though, not the crazy Hekatoncheires from yore
just bigger
Then make them gargantuan. Ez
Gargantuan is an excellent category to just encapsulate everything bigger
again this me just nit picking but i dont think a big lizard and something thats described to be the size of montains should be on the same playing field
If there’s no difference gameplay wise, there’s no point
Make them gargantuan, plop down an entire token or miniature that takes up the entire map, youre done
or what if i beocme a tiny bug and use reduce on myself
adding a plus here seems... to add just a plus
then what
then its under Reduce
If you feel a neurotic need to call it Super Ultra Mega Turbo SPecial Gargantuan, then go ahead, but it adds litteraly nothing, and isn't neccesary.
whats after tiny
Tiny
If the only difference you’re looking for is just names then… just describe it that way
im gonna crush you
the creature still shrinks, to be fair
You could say they're a creature so titanic the very vision of them gets dimmed by the atmosphere, like a boat near the horizon. You could describe that their height is so immense that it seemed like whoever made such creature into being sought that it could touch the heavens merely by lifting it's arm
its size category doesnt change. But it does shrink still
writring this down
At this size, you just have to think on what goes hard and double down on it
Just look at Yormungrandr from God of War and start describing it
Jörmungandr you mean?
and then put Tiamat's mini to symbolize the head
i still think its funny that a level 17 rune knight can still suplex that thing
When it walks, the very earth feels like earthquakes were merely children, in face of the calamity that it's steps ensued
ive seen both spellings used
SUPLEX
tbf, thats their level 18 feature
nothing is technically stopping the Rune Knight from matching the size either
Hey, Ti!
You get to deal with a depressed Bugbear today
go full Kamen Rider on it, and if i hear someone saying Kamen Rider is goofy you should ki-
exactly but to grapple you only need to be within one size of it
have you seen those videos of people able to move people around by twisting their ear or arm? Same thing
so a huge creature can grapple a gargantuan
... dragging tiamat by the horns like an angry mom is funny
i wish he had more cr 30 threats
Rune Knight's maximum RAW size is 6 by 6 squares
i wanna see what dnd can come up with
we have like, 3 in official DnD right?
