Just is the same when the SCAG stuff was put in Xanathar’s and Tasha’s
Or with Volo’s and Tome of Foes in Monsters of the Multiverse
Nealen is correct
Same song and dance for a decade.
idk it feels wierd that you need to read 14 because they did not remake it, did 24 not add spells in the book for the same reason?
Most likely. Or just made better to play versions.
Like how Befuddlement is a more fun way to deal with Feeblemind.
It’s always been that way.
Before even 2024 books came out.
4e was not compatible with 5e
Nobody said it was lol
While the volos stuff still technically exists, VGtM and MToF were explicitly tagged as being superseded by the newer option. And moved out of print and taken off of the DDB webstore for future purchases, with the release of MPMotM. Unlike say, Tasha's Soul Knife Rogue, and PHB 5e Revised Soul Knife Rogue
'14 5e and '24 5e are the same: 5e
Yet a lot of it was converted. The DMG variant rules are just 4e mechanics
Converted yes, compatible, no
so where is it in 24 then?
It’s still 5e
Just because it’s not reprinted doesn’t make it part of 5e
The revised rule set is still missing some things for me to consider it complete. The lack of downtime rules outside of Bastions is a bummer.
I just think its wierd to make a remake and then not do it fully and instead say its backwards compatible eventhough you changed a lot of them, can i just take the buffed verition of a boon why should i take the bad one
"Don't pick things that have been reprinted", done
Most of the reason for the 5e Refresh felt less like a needed change, and more like a "We need something big for the 50th"
No one's stopping you. Play however you like
I like the changes over all, I will clarify.
24 did good changes dont get me wrong, but i still think they buffed to much but left casters behind a lot besides circle casting
Casters needed a bit of a knee caping tbh
And they still got useful things.
Because thats not what the rules actually say
Yep Buffs are good. Nerfs are also good. Just raising the floor and not lowering the ceiling is how Power Creep sets in.
Like the new spellcasting rules opens up to more schenanigans, Druids and Bards can spam their abilities more often. Sorcerer gets spells. Etc
You use the 2024 rules and only if something hasn't been reprinted do you use the 2014 version.
Rangers can swap Spells over a Long Rest. Paladin pulled back to one Spell at Long Rest
bring back magical and non magical damage and then make like 60% of monsters resistant to magical damage lmfaooo
Now you're cooking
Admittedly the power creep in 5e has always sorta been. Nonexistent. What with a lot of ""the best"" things being from the 2014 PHB lol.
Quality of life on the other hand however
spell switching did change and is a buff, but that i dislike for other reasons
Yea, I had to spend some time explaining to a 2014 cleric that since this is a 2024 game they have to use the 2024 version of Spiritual Weapon.
How to make a looking for dm post
This is why from then on my games are 2024 only.
Those still exist, the distinction just doesnt matter (much)
dude, my poor DM, she's been playing for a while, right? she remembers rules from 3.5E and occasionally implements them on accident lmao
I wonder if people aruged on 4e and the 4.5e back in the days......
4.5 E did not exist
There is a command in #find-a-game you type out
4e was probably the most argued edition
Ive heard a lot of fun stuff about 4e
Different reasons
As for 3e vs v3.5
Base 3e sucked so bad it was less than 5 years before the refresh happened.
we get 4e rules, 3.5e rules, 5e rules, she's gotten better about 2024 but damn that's a lot of remembering
5 years is quite a while tbf
I’m not sure I agree with this. I’m fairly confident in saying that most of the content published after Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is significantly stronger than the stuff that came before it. Custom Lineage, Twilight Cleric, Fey Touched Feat, etc
Also if we are actually being honest, the 2024 rules for 5e didn't actually change a lot of the actual rules
Classes changed fairly significantly sure. But the base rules of the system? Many were a copy paste, many more were "the same but more clear"
wow are you all sure i can't just make a peacefull roll let's bygons be bygons... and say all editions are super good?
100% agreed on this
Yesno
Powercreep implies that (for lack of a better term) the ceiling got higher. The ceiling didn't really get (much) higher, but it made it easier to create a higher floor (aforementioned quality of life being a factor).
Sorry it was less than 5 years. New PHB MM and DMG 3 years in
3e is alright but 3.5e is so much better in every way
(related)
The difference between 3.0 and 3.5 vs 5e and what people call 5.5 is so huge its hilarious
Well my argument is that the ceiling did get noticeably higher. Though I guess the fact that it’s noticeable doesn’t automatically mean it’s that large of a quantity
thats even worse, "having" / "you should" build a character depending on arbitrary character classifications I agree with/ found is still not an argument tbh
Base Game was 3 years
AD&D 1e was 12 years
AD&D 2e was 11 years with a refresh 6 years in
3e was 3 years
v3.5 was 5 years
4e was 6 years
5e is 12 years with a refresh 10 years in
I think you mean OD&D to all the way to 5.5e
Next year 5e will be the longest running edition of the game.
I think 4e was the shortest aside from 0
If you don't separate 3e vs v3.5 considering those systems had massive changes in them
Yea ill be honest its not that its not noticeable, its just (to pull a random number), only like 10% at best
The bigger thing with the post tashas everything and all that is simply that dnd had a very large influx of people around tashas due to world events™️ that resulted in more chatter and more people "realizing" ceilings and all that (despite a lot of similar levels being achievable beforehand)
What paint works well with cardboard? trying to find something to make my dnd game more visually appealing
isn't that late for that since 5.5e is now running?
There was (for better or worse) a pretty large (online) community attitude shift around 2020, even if it was more subtle at first
its still 5e
I think you replied to the wrong guy there, lol
yeh xD
There is more in common with the 2024 revision of 5e as the 1995 2e revision.
Its still 5e
Even the initial announcement of it back when it was under the codename for UAs of onednd it was announced as a revision of the 5e rules "you know and love", which simply put, is exactly what it is
There’s no such thing as 5.5e. That’s purely a fan term. The 2024 Core Rules are part of 5e
As said ^
huh... i must of speak of fan terms x'D... so 2014 5e got rebooted to the 2024 5e
A lot of the usage that I've personally seen of the term 5.5 has been from people (for better or worse, often worse) wanting to make the rules revision "mean more"™️ or make it into something it isn't
(With some relation to this)
Think of it as a patch
tbh I mostly use it bc there ARE some distinctions as to how certain things work (or rather for character creation mostly as some stuff was remodeled there)
I call it 5e Revised. Because 2024 might be easier to type but that is too many syllables to say in words and has bad mouth feel
especially in terms of high power builds:
e.g. how MoP works in 2014 compared to 2024
But it is not a v5.5
i always thought that if there were new rules as a different it would be a different version.
Nope the 2e revision in 1995 disproves this
unless they change more stuff and do a "real" 5.5e I dont really see an issue with calling it that
especially since, depending on context of course, some stuff DID change and distinguishing here is not an inherently bad thing imo
ok
Or any time an edition has released a new rulebook that adds (or changes) to the base rules in significant ways
Which is every edition
- since there is no "real" 5.5E people know what is meant by the usage of "5.5E"
every edition of the game had multiplue sets of core books, this is no different
Ehhhhh not really like that.
Like I said, a lot of the usage i see of it is a (negative) attitude thing
does dnd have novels to read up on lore?
Yes. Thousands
4e PHB 2 DMG 2 and MMs 2 and 3 were not refreshes of the original but were more options. Not at all what the revised 5e is
theres A LOT of lore
3e never got the chance to put out more core books. v3.5 did not revise themselves.
and different universes that are kind of semi or not linked depending on what you want to know/ play
Btw I read the 2024 update to the Protection Fighting style and wow it’s so much better???
I often just distinguish right away: Are you aware/ using twenty-twenty-four rules?
i see
Disadvantage on all attack rolls against your ally for the whole round is great!
Really only 2e has done what 5e has done.
the humble ST throw spells.....
Oh sorry I wasnt just referring to those, just the "additional rulebooks that add onto or change things from the base rules"
Xanathars is an example from 5e that also changed (or added onto) the base rules quite a bit.
Biggest winner in the revised rules is True Strike
I like revised Divine Smite
at the very least its very high on the list yeh
so im taking a third level in sorcerer instead of multiclassing, but idk how to use my fourth known spell. i would like to get Alter Self, but our cleric doesnt do his job, so we need healing. my other two options are Enhance Ability (mainly for bear) and Wither & Bloom.
Nah, it's TOTALLY Assassin Rogue
true strike 2014 is essentially unplayable
It went from “reaction before an attack roll to give disadvantage on an attack”
To “all attacks have disadvantage so long as the target is always 5ft of you.”
Maybe talk to your cleric, mayhaps?
what do you want out of this?
Bladesinger teaming up with a Fighter, Ranger, or Paladin would thrive in that.
mechanically best, best "healing", funny spells?
guidance on which spell to take
You good, I was replying to Nat 40 saying this has happened every edition. When that is just incorrect.
Last combat my cleric was in, he was 5 hp the whole time but constantly healing everyone else
the guidance is entirely dependent on what you want from this, bc there ARE some clear cut better obtions
You could look at damage reduction stuff maybe?
My poor Tortle lad was on the verge of death but he was more worried about the rest of his lads
tbh imo healing is a waste unless you are already down , let me debuff the enemy instead
Web.
Divine Soul: Prayer of Healing
We got fireballed really bad and almost EVERYONE was way below half HP
pros and cons:
Alter Self
[+] i can progress my character's narrative
[-] no consistent source of hp
Enhance Ability
[+] more options, doesn't need to hurt something
[-] bear gives temp hp which doesnt stop death saves
Wither & Bloom
[+] necrotic damage fits my character, and it gives real hp
[-] must hurt something
thats why you have sources of THP
or healing word as a BA when they ultimately go down
I had said basically the same thing lol
okay so you dont want guidance on GENERAL spells, but rather on which one of these 3 you should pick?
^
yeah from the three
Between the 3: I like Alter Self
Keeping your allies from going down in the first place is still completely viable
Dms COULD be cruel and attack downed characters twice and just straight up kill them.
the only one without a real - is wither and bloom, since the "hurting sth" you would have hurt anyway in combat
How about Web? Stops melee guys from moving in close (or slows them down) and disadvantage for anyone tangled.
thats what revivify is for 🤷
Shang Tsung with Alter Self
Negating damage is a lot better than undoing damage after all.
trueg.. also i can discriminate between targets for the damage
My guy.
My Cleric is level 4.
cool
gentle repose and save them until lvl up lol
also depending on your dm he might hand out a scroll of revivify or sth
Gentle Repose food too
oh absolutely, I wasnt saying you cant, just that its not the best move imo
Your opinion matters not to me /not to be rude
upcasting e.g. command to give your allies a free turn during which they can heal themselves with a potion or attack the enemies and maybe even defeat them without you needing to heal them is just a better use imo
thats fair 🤷
Whenever I see people casual about revivify I wonder what diamond kingdom they living in.
You don't know the situation we were in so you can't say what the most viable option is anyway.
its more of a :
most dms/ players want to keep the characters alive so there will be opportunites (maybe even as story hooks) for them to obtain diamonds
Considering how the DMG handles loot I can see why
I know I cry Everytime I read it
Rolling up a treasure hoard “roughly every session” is a lot of loot
Everyone below half hp, completely surrounded on all sides, everyone had to split up to fight different groups to actually hold ground, I think healing them and trying to keep them up was the right choice because if one person went down, we'd all be overwhelmed.
I personally dont care too much about the characters bc I like creating new ones too, but there are people that would stay in a campaing/ drop it depending on if their character dies without a way to bring them back
i grow too attached to them
both are fine, but just trying to emphasize where the "diamond kingdom" might be coming from lol
if my boy eric dies i'm building a shrine irl
Plane of Earth probably
depending on the narrative death is not sth thats too relevant
It’s mostly gem stones and planes walking with casters or random portals are a thing after all
altough I personally like more high stakes stuff
I am usually a generous DM and will grant diamonds rarely in extreme deadly places.
I will never do it though if the character death is the result of character committing a stupid.
Also in FR Elminster and other Chosen of Mystra just run around restocking dungeons.
which ttrpg systems have the best lore?
I am dead set on stockpiling as much gold as humanly possible to buy gemstones
My DM answer to the player wanting infinite spell components.
"Out of stock."
best in comparison to what?
This might be a better question for #non-dnd-topics if it's just about general TTRPGs!
I think people need to realize that reviving someone isn't always an option and definitely shouldn't be
ok
An adventure should have stakes!!!
Souls can refuse revival spells
If you're saving the universe fron Lord Murder Death, you should fear for your life
A lich can just eat your soul
Only revivify.
And reincarnate, I believe
Soul chips, when the bag is filled with only "air" but you ain't mad about it
Soul's still gotta be available to receive calls
Or there could just be a situation where you either die trying to revive someone or get the hell outta there lol
i thought spell components weren't expent unless explicitly stated?
Which diamonds for revival are
This was about a conversation about diamonds
i see.
How I start a campaign:
Get 50 gold
Buy a gem
Chromatic orb achieved
Happy
All ressurection can be denied per the DMG
Hm, well shit
So you could cast Wish and the soul can say “No”
I thought chromatic orb consumed the component? 😭
Why would you refuse ressurection as pc though
Nope!
One thing I am not a fan of is the Dead condition doesn't mention that if a soul isn't free it can't be revived.
Nuh uh
Want to play a new character for the player.
Has had enough of life for the PC.
Sometimes. Death is a satisfying end.
Probably because some characters would think coming back from the dead is heinous, maybe because they died an honorable death, maybe because they're reunited with someone in death ect
“Why waste these resources on me?”
also I just realised that the magic jar spell is essentially an instakill with a CHA st lol
So you can't torture an army of soldiers to keep on fighting even when they are broken beyond repair and only wish for death, bummer..
I mean, if your character has already achieved what they sought to do, and then died, I feel like that's a pretty satisfying end, if you get ressurected and have no more motives that's just milking a dead cow
nope, you could extort the soul tho e.g. if you dont come back I do X to your loved one
Yeah things like making Zombies are just putting actual Evil into a corpse, not grabbing someone’s soul.
If my Warlock died, he'd probably refuse revival because he'd most probably be reunited with his sister in death
takes notes
Used to Resurrection has the soul must be willing and free.
They removed the free part as far as I can't tell. So imprisoning souls is less of an assumed course.
What if you are their loved one
Me when get infused with evil™
You can't, you just extort the body, not the soul
Because the Alignments are actual forces of the multiverse and the evil half’s power makes undead things.
depends on the options your dm gives you, if you have a way to let the soul know, then yes, you could extort the soul/ being
Would it be morally wrong to resurrect your dead spouse
but other than that you cannot force a resurrection
depends on context I guess
The Material plane is just the dead center of it all so they get all of the alignments.
That is like the plot of Honor Among Thieves
If you raise them as an undead, yes
If you resurrect them and restore them to life, probably not?
whats that
The dnd movie
Depends on a few things, do they wanna come back? Do they come back as zombo? Do they become immortal / age gap between you and them becomes too large ? Are they in unimaginable pain when alive?
ah I see
Say, you can't move on, they're ready to move on, but you can't, so constantly you resurrect them hoping that someday something would change
I mean if they actually try to die over and over then yes, thats morally wrong
They don't try to die they are just very unlucky
I mean kinda, for one ressurection isnt as easy but i still think he would have revived his wife if the barbarian woman (forgot her name) didnt die
Well, as mentioned, a soul can refuse resurrection
But a body cannot refuse being brought back as an undead
The Soul isn't brought back as part of the Undead being
Most of the plot on the movie is centered on letting go
Ill take your word, been a while since ive seen it tbf
That's Frozen
wait hold on, so if they refuse the first time, can they accept the second time their body gets revived?
The soul only comes back if its willing
The 2023 DnD movie. Probably the best we got too.
Can you spam someones soul with revive requests?
Lmaooo
Yeah. It's just costly... unless you're a certain Barbarian subclass
"Honey, come back, I know you've died like fifteen times but I promise this time I'll keep you safe"
A person can also choose to have their soul reside in a Ring of Mind-Shielding if they have one, fun fact
I have a qustion to that... coudn't you use a resurrection scroll?
Zeallut barbarian doesnt consume the gem when revived
Oh yeah the 2014 Zealot negated Raise dead components
Also the genie warlock lantern thing? Or am I miss remembering stuff?
souls can refuse
Does it not need it or not consume it
ok that makes perfect sense
No, that doesn't do the same thing lol
'14 Zealot Barbarian
yeh I just saw, thats funny ngl
Doesn’t need it
Resurrection is consensual because you're asking
Raising undead isn't because you're forcing
You need to cast the Spell. So it consumes the material component. Spell Scroll too
Also making Undead isn’t bringing anyone back to life
Indeed
It’s just making a monster.
Undead isn't life, resurrection is very much life
I was talking zealot barbarian btw
Raising Undead is only a Material matter. No souls involved
I'm pretty sure I asked this before and I forgot, where do people in DnD go when they die?
the lost souls?
depends on what you are playing
not sure where to ask this. I am a novice DM and my new group has asked to do a dystopian adventure (divergent/hunger games) in high fantasy. I'm looking for a premade campaign and modules to buy on roll20. Does anyone have any suggestions since i dont know all the books
are they conscious in the afterlife? how can they consent to being revived?
And which setting
Oh. The caster doesn't need the Material Component if its reviving the Zealot
Spell Scroll's probably consumed though
huh... time to question life.
John the life pork is calling 📳
It is specifically stated they know of the casting and they know who is doing it.
doesnt have to be concious, could just be a brief moment of : hey: come back and if they refuse they go back to nothingness
It’s magic, making sense isn’t usually on the menu.
I wonder if they would know if I had a Disguise on 🥸
Me when I kill and resurrect the atheist npc to prove/disprove there is an afterlife
or if a changeling used shapechanger
Yes because they don't get a view screen. It is like sending, they just know.
Well in DnD the Afterlife is a known thing
I wonder if there's a "Do not disturb" feature in the afterlife
Like wizards can just travel to them
DnD, if you will
They can summon creatures from there.
Planescape is so fun
how exactly?
Plane shift
Magic
All the Outer Planes are afterlives.
ah interesting, didnt know that
Yeah each plane is based on an Alignment
They look at who you were during life and send your soul to an outer plane.
I wonder which afterlife is the best one to go to
Based Kelemvor
mechanus for sure
So if you are Lawful Good you go to Mount Celestia, Arcadia, Bytopia depending on how Lawful or how Good you were
Arcadia for the very Lawful + good
Bytopia for very good + lawful
And Mount Celestia for in between
So long as nothing gets in the way of the system of course
Like a Lich or Devil can yoink souls
Kelemovr becomes god of the dead
Uses his best judgement to become a moral and just god.
Other gods get pissed because one guy is assigning everyone
Submits himself to his own test
Fails
Removes all of his emotions
Damn played himself
Well he and Mystra were good aligned people. And they wanted to be good gods. Mystra only gave magic to good people. Kelemvor was very lenient on bad souls.
Then their number one op Cyric accuses them of not being fair and balanced. "Incompetence by Humanity"
I sometimes have like a moral ambigurity with the concept of death sometimes. Especially with magic that can bypass it
You sometimes need to write a reason why they can't get ressurected for example
Which was fun to see in the DnD movie they had to adress that fact
im running my own Naruto themed homebrew dnd campaign and i have a filler arc coming up (a player cant show up) so im doing a one shot with the group, i wanted to do something unique with an interesting fight and a possible twist but im struggling with writing a one shot for this filler session. looking for ideas or suggestions so dm me or reply to this, you dont need to be a naruto fan its just a naruto rekin over most 5e rules. thank you!!! (kinda looking for a one shot co-writer)
Beach episode
bleach would work but like what arc, and can it be done in 2-3 hours thats the hard part
Tournament arc
Does anybody have a campaign open for new players?
we have already done one of those :/ i kinda want top do something with a crazy twist at the end
Flashback episode
flashback isnt a bad idea, i could take them back in time but they would probably just refight a previous enemy and that could make them bored :/
I remember watching Kaiju number 8. Their filler episode was the team was following their leader on an off day and it was just him shopping.
thats a pretty cool idea but unfortuantly their l;eader rn is being chased as a rouge ninja, since this is a one shot i have to avoid the mains story of my campaign so that wouldnt work but i like the idea!
Don't share your age, it's against the rules.
Is it?
timetravel arc
It is
go back and fight the villian as young
Why I feel like it shouldn't be especially to find campaigns that aren't 18+ that kinda sucks
the problem is, they have been sweeping most fights, if they went back in time they would completely level the enemy, however i could do something where i merge the 3 most difficult bosses into one fight..... thats actually kinda sick of an idea
Situation, location, opposition, complication. Aim to hit the three pillars of combat, exploration and interaction.
You can say if you meet the criteria or not, but not share your exact age, here's the rule: #1133105121853714563 message
Ok that makes more sense
exactly! yes but man its hard to hit those in a 3 hour only session so im strugglinggggg
Also, you can delete posts you've made.
Have you heard the gospel of the Five Room Dungeon method?
ive seen a youtube video i think but im not familiar really, the only issue is i mean i really dont have like the core details of the one shot, i didnt know if anyone here played a super remembable one shot i could reflavor for naruto
Hmmm... what if they had a train to catch?
its a naruto campaign so not exactly sure what to do withthat lol
-# I'm not familiar with Naruto
basically just imagine normal 5e, but ninjas instead of adventures
What's this 3 bosses fight you mentioned earlier?
well basically they have foughten 3 bosses that were kinda tough but they rolled the bosses (players are op) but what if i put these 3 seperate fights into one big fight? the only issue is, idk where the bosses sheets went (homebrew sheets) lol
Remake it from memory and your players could remember them too
ig uess my only issue is all the detils surrounding the session, like this would have to be some type of shared nightmare or something, i cant have the bosses come back actually in verse (no nercomancy in naruto really) so id have to make a short story and a reason why they are back fighting our players when they were all from different arcs and locations
Whats a good Cr10 monster for a vampire servant? Ideally a brute type creature.
genjutsu
have them roll multiple Con saves (the first ones are "poison" that makes them more susceptible)
followed by the real con save
so they have a shared "dream"
the absent player is the only one that "succeeded" and was dealing with the person that cast the genjutsu in the meantime
hence why they arent there
Helloooooooll
lolhi
Hru?
good, recently made a fishermangod canon to a reality where i accidentaly dropped my +1 knife
Yes i like being vague in context
Peak?
In a few hundred years when that planet becomes more sufficient in magic my character could get a message from a great great great great, etc son of a fisherman family that turned into noblemen from being the origin of discovering magic.
Dang nice XD
So hru?
I’m good thanks!
Hi im starting to create an adventure and imm starting the world building were in the -300 dr adventurer was transported in to a land out of time. My question is there any significant civiliisation of human in the years -300 dr of forgotten realm.
Yeah, so does WotC. They still won't give me physics-appropriate damage calcs for Summon Iron Wall in the air so it splatters whoever's below.
@hot marlin :3
Thx
I would, Im with you on this
Cause I'm pretty sure dropping 800+ lbs of SOLID IRON on someone from any height is a whole hella lot more than just d6/10 ft
but i think you can make up the rules yourself too
Me my dm and the other players also strive for realism and this would be allowed if proven to work in world, slight issue might be that the enemies can use it too
No no, that last bit's perfect. Players can do whatever they like.... but enemies are just as capable.
I like your takes my fellow dnd'er
Sure, you wanna pull out a Bag of Undead Beholder Holding? Don't be surprised if an enemy has something similar prepared at some point 👀
Behold, Chest of Flaming Zombies Holding
Oops, now your boat's in danger of catching fire
That did happen to me
My vampire spawn noble chased down the party at sea, combat was even until the wizard burned a huge hole in the side of his ship with fireballs and he had to spend the rest of the night and following day under sea to bot die from the sun
yeah, crushing traps can do a lot of damage
This is legitimately one of the best ways to get players to realize create water shouldn't do the broken things they want it to do.
so is falling IRL (usually)
but once u bring physics into the game, a lot of things break down ....
I mean the main argument is to turn it to ice no?
but in regards to that the overwhelming consensus is that spells do what they specifiy, not more
Unfortunately no. There's plenty of people who ask 'well, the lungs are an empty container, right?'
I mean, if players can Create Water and freeze it midair before it hits the ground, that's totally valid, given that water is 8 lbs per gallon, but they'd have to legitimately accomplish it
Also, they'd then be totally vulnerable to having it done to them at some point in the future, which is completely fair.
ahh I see, well no bc they occupy a creatures space which is defined as a 5x5 ft square
Lungs are technically an empty container, but if they're trying to cast Create Water like that, treat it as Drown (5th spell tier)
They're not an empty container by any stretch of the definition.
not really no, bc its not really an OPEN container
they dont know if the enemy is e.g. swallowing so it would be closed, therefore the casting fails
also its not about empty but OPEN
the "empty" argument you can somehow facilitate bc otherwise you couldnt cast it outside either bc theres air also
page 19 of the new DMG comes in handy here for sure
Since when do we read around here? ||/s||
It really doesn't matter in any regard. A creature isn't a container.
i recommend it
somewhat depends on context and e.g. corpse/ creature definition is iffy
A creature is an organic container of biomass, ackshually.
and an "empty" skull IS a container e.g.
so the question is when does it count as empty
When someone INT dumped?
Very simply, mechanically, a creature isn't a container.
All the other silliness can get thrown out.
Okay, but it's still a squirming SACK OF FLESHY BITS
Also, creatures have lots of container-like space inside for digestion
But again, I'm all for these creative methodologies..... but those who abuse them will most definitely find themselves on the receiving end as well.
The big question to ask as a player when getting ....creative... is, "How would I feel if the enemies could do this?"
Also, I hear what you're saying, but objectively, a monster is just a mobile lootbox.
If it takes time and planning, I feel like it should be rewarded. If it's just some 1 minute "this instantly kills them" cheese, probably not.
No no, by all means, let them have their 'insta-kill' moment. They'll be smiling right up until the enemies learn from the experience and use it themselves.
Oh the joy of finally being able to add a villain that makes genuine plans on killing them
The biggest argument I've seen is no line of sight
Legacy Water Walk used to send underwater creatures rocketing back to the surface at 60 ft / round. I'd totally let them use that to kill something with The Bends..... then have it being used on them by spellcasting undersea enemies.
There is no LOS between you and the target for the spell (their insides that actually store whatever atrocity you want to commit)
I mean, that's easy enough to solve with Wizard's Eye
Long as they stay in range of your extended magivision, at least.
I remember one time I made a 20 step plan using an expensive gate scroll, DM said the dude I was targeting had omniscience
hi
Your DM sounds like a real piece of work
Campaign imploded 2 months later
Yeah, that tracks.
Im now in three brand new campaigns and all of them are pretty fun
nice
Curse Of Strahd, Curse'd By Strahd, and Frontiers of Mirari
i wanna try and be in a dnd campaign and literally just be the healer
always curse of strahd this, strahd this another
No one "how is Strahd?"
Undead, obviously.
His heart might not pump anymore but that dont mean he dont feel something
As a cleric main myself, it's fun or bad depending on the group
Cursed, that's how he feels.
Also, I'm 99% sure vampires have functioning hearts
Oh, poor creature, hope they find a cure for that someday
well i wanna be the healer cleric
So life domain
ye
Life Domain is the healiest healer that ever did heal
It's fun, just don't let people take advantage of your support
Yeah, I've got a character involved in Cult of the Dragon shenanigans, too. https://www.dndbeyond.com/avatars/53428/460/1581111423-157446052.jpeg
Hell yeah
Although im still adapting to the paladin gameplay, it's hard to act like I don't want loot
Life domain heal so good they also heal
I remember when I made a power build healer for fun, I coulden't even die if I wanted too
Observe my special move... running away!
Clerics are the slowest of the classes I think?
Besides maybe Wind Walk? They don’t have much mobility.
Im pretty sure there's a spell that can activate another stored spell under certain conditions
Word of Recall maybe.
Kind of like a mobile temporary glyph of warding
Assuming of course you aren’t dealing with a monster that negates teleportation
DM has to hate their players if they counterspell healing and teleports
Shoutout to Demiliches and that weird mouth monster
Oh it’s not even a Counterspell. It just happens when you are in their dungeons.
It’s like trying to cast Plane shift in Barovia, get hit by a big no and waste slot
I remember when I had a DM that hated the idea of me resurrecting my teammates so much, they added wounds on enemy nat 20's and if I revive them
[Tier 4 campaign btw]
Just limit diamonds, e-z
We didn't have components
DM skill issue
Wanna know what did really, like really really anger me?
I should do that one module that says “no” to healing, ressurection, and teleporting
Also has the rule of “disadvantage on death saves (which are DC 15)”
We had this party wizard that was dropping like 700 force damage nukes, but as soon as their character died they suggested that we add components
Like, dude?
Maybe that should be my next campaign. Just that meat grinder of a module
First day of DMing at my school's dnd club:
-40 kids showed up, 30 of which didn't have characters. We expected about 15-20.
-Most didn't know how to make characters
-We had one handbook, one notebook with brief descriptions of classes.
-Absolute Chaos.
Gotta get the basic rules PDF ready.
Atp just print out an application form 😭
Lmao yeah
But personally I do hate it when people bring pre-made characters to campaigns that don't fit them
I have to pray to Jesus that no-one's a Druid in my campaign
What did druids do 🥀
Halsin
Bc it's centred around a secret race of Druids whose forest is being threatened
i love u halsin
I don’t see why a Druid couldn’t be allowed there
And I swear, if someone seduces something on the first session I ever run, I'm just throwing something
Why do you hate fun? /s
In the world, a Druid has not been seen in over 100 years. They're thought to be a long lost race
they will seduce. ive seduced a door. it worked
Plus they have more stakes, maybe, and more willing to try and help
Oh, all Druids
Granted, you have to communicate that to the players
True D&D horror story: I tried teaching some friends how to play D&D, and in our first sessions one of them was playing Bloons Tower Defense the whole time and barely interacted at all. The other one tried to seduce every female NPC that showed up.
I truly shed a tear whenever a new D&D player thinks it's just a dating game
So just have them be from a different circle
.
Ofc it's not, it's Dice Dating v'24
And?
Thats still a druid, which are supposed to be rare in their setting
Easy plot, someone outside is a Druid somehow, now that secret groups wants to know how.
I’m still for having Druids tbh
I don't know who's in my campaign
The player characters are meant to be special after all
Druids aren't a race 🤔
They can just be the rare people themself after all. We got angel people as a playable race after all.
Do you have any way to communicate to the players at large?
I mean as in it's a secret group of people
This sounds like a secret implosion waiting to happen 🤔
You mean a secret sect?
Yeah, ik, but they've already created characters
erm actually
That’s concerning
Mhm
That seems like an issue on its own
FIREBA-
NOOO
Because that's what the absolute chaos of a today's session was
word of advice, make a discord
Fine, fine. Skull Trap!
okay fine meteor swarm
Antimagic field
Will there be any campaigns available to play on this server?
As a Deity of Goofy, I negate thy Antimagic Field to allow a silly to happen
Campaigns on this server, no. But theres a lot of ads for them
I'm aware, I don't know who's joining my campaign, so I'm going to have to pray to all the gods that theyll listen and maybe join a gc
Look at #find-a-game , this server doesn’t host games tho
Ok thank you.
You just mentioned you had a session, you should know whos in that session
Just a reminder that you don’t need to accept too many people into your game
i joined a session that had like 12 people.... the combat was......rough to say the least
Nah 12 people is way to many, both slogs down combat to a grinding halt and doesnt allow for any individual character moments
exactly. i didnt come back and i dont think they even realized
Alright i did my turn, time to wait for 45 minutes
The Waterdeep party I'm in when combat starts: "We are going to beat you to death!"
And then they do so without theatrics! Very much beat to death.
Can you imagine such a simple party?
I mean, theyre true to their word
We've got a Rogue, Monk, Barbarian, Sorcerer and Cleric (Me)
Combats are pretty damn fast lol
Sorcerer all lonely in the back
Actually cleric might be there, depending what type
counterspell
Subtle spelled
I'm mostly mid to backline
I'm a Knowledge Cleric, though, I'm a Tortle and have like 19 AC, when we reach level 5 imma be Spirit Gaurdian-ing pretty hard
I also have wizard magic initiate frome the Sage background, so I have shocking grasp, Ray of Frost and shield as some spell options lol
Fire
If the three of our martials don't beat someone to death, I'm kinda there to defend the sorcerer lol
Neat
I may or may not have the highest AC And a bowl of water elemental control
Been playing a paladin for a couple sessions now and god i love high AC
We call the Water Elemental I summon from it "Whirlpool" he's a unit
Dm doesnt, which makes it better /hj
I was playing some Fighter, feel nice hitting many times and hard.
Next level extra attack and 2nd level spell slots. Should be doing better damage
So far ive been underwhelming in fights, just tanking hits
Oh yeah playing Fighter is wicked amounts of damage.
The fighter in my Tuesday game (Not that one Tokii) is constantly doing 100+ damage a round.
Blade Pact Warlock is pretty fun, you're almost always on par with the Fighter if you invest until action surge and their 20th level extra attack are added in
His action surges hurt
Or any Fighter feats.
Warlock has difficulties with AC and HP.
Indeed
I just so happened to take the tough feat with one of my Lessons of the Old Ones invocations lol
And I bought elven chain!
Also helps the fighter in the party you are in is a Multiclass which is actively weaker.
But my other Tuesday group fighter is a monster with how fast and how hard he hits.
Damn Ti-Moth smh.
Level 1-20 group so they have so much loot hoarded up.
I'm surprised our characters even make it through combat encounters, honestly >->
i wanna know your guys' opinion on something: if a DM let you join a campaign, say, session 2 or 3. And you join. The DM doesn't tell you until you get there that youll be playing a pre-made character, the character of another player who dropped. how would yall feel about that?
I mean sure. You shouldn’t have a character made ahead of time.
100% terrible
Characters are made during session 0 after all.
do everything to kill that particular character or straight up tell them u dont like that
depending on if other stuff happened and malicious compliance
but best course of action is to tell them you would like to play your own character etc etc
so im not crazy??? i joined and there were aspects of that character i wasnt comfortable roleplaying. their response was "well theyre already integrated in the story, so..."
I think I'd play it for a session then ask if I can make a character before next session as I prefer to play my own
Oh, then like.. leave? Lol
You're not supposed to just fill in for someone's character because they leave
i did just that, then got chewed out for being 'unreliable'
see just kill the character then so they dont do that to someone else , revival spells dont work if u dont want your soul to return
so i left lol
Then leave the table
Even then you can also ask to modify the character to how you want to play them as well.
terrible dm for sure
oh alright then, thats the more mature option for sure but Im petty
well it was backstory stuff important to the campaign. guess what in involved.
I mean u could just change that, it doesnt take much
just "insert new character"
i asked if i could, he said it was important for the campaign
or "hey would u be ok with you being a relative to that character so we can carry on the narrative"
I perfer new table
I would've said
"Then make the character an NPC? I'm not looking to play someone else's character, I'd like to make my own or I can just leave."
i already left, but i wanted to know if i was suer crazy for telling them i wasnt comfortable
Hi ❤️
he chewed me out man i was so confused
Valid reasoning 100%
sounds like a him problem, you were justified
You are not getting very good luck on your dnd games are you 💀
now i'm scared to find a dm T_T
Gooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
No wonder the last player left, this dm sounds like a child
thanks guys i feel validated
Heyyyy I'm good, thanks
The roof
i wonder if she really wrote her backstory or if he did.
oh what I would give to be able to send the scary move GIF xD
Ill do you one better: the sky
what happened to the niffler btw, if its now a "dead platypus" xD
Hi good, I’m Nugget, good morning from the Land Down Under
Ah, most aren't so bad. People are people. People mess up. Some people are more mature than others.
You're in a chat full of people right now, many of whom have or will DM.
Like any hobby/activity where you spend a lot of time with the same group of people, you might find sometimes you do and don't click, and good communication helps wonders.
I am suffering, half my conversation contribution is gifs 😭
Hallo, DM here
Hallo, neither here
Well, someone mistook it for a platypus, then someone killed me
Sooo
☠️
🙏🏻
makes sense I guess lmao
May he rest in a pet cemetery
rest in pieces :)))
Me crafting the most horrifically depressing plot full of darkness and betrayal
Then I slap in a dog! ||The dog Is actually a vessel the BBEG is trapped in and the party will eventually set it free.||
yeh the campaign that would have started like 2 months ago? that no one (even the dm) bothered to organize other than me had their session 0 like 2 weeks ago and everyone showed up, other than the dm
It's definitely not morning here but good morning nonetheless
in person btw, so you can have both here and there
Time to think of how I could make a warforged or autognome monk who's powered by 80s to early 2000's music.
|| And then they will have to kill the dog , as it begs to be released from the BBEG and finally die in peace and meet his original owner ||
understandable
theres a lot of hype, if u want to start go to #dnd-newcomers
theres a lot of reading to do
||No, the Dog and the BBEG are ine in the same, there was never a real dog.||
Or should I put this in character discussion?
probably
Me creating an evil dark edgy gritty dark fantasy campaign based on Black Metal and opening it with a "horse walks into a bar" joke:
but how about an old classic: the steam engine
sound used to power one that powers your warforged
|| so the BBEG went potty outside by the tree? 😭🙏🏻 he'd get mocked so hard by a bard ||
Viva la John Carpenters; The Thing
"That dog isn't real!'
I don't know where to discuss my character since discussing character is only for 2014 and 2024... so IDK what to do at this point. X'D
I dunno why I'm spoilering it. I haven't even started the campaign yet.. and probably won't for a while lmao
homebrew?
D&D first edition
#dnd-elder-editions probably
I'm not gonna be in it anyways so I don't mind
Someone give me some bleach / a lobotomy I don't wanna exist rn
With this treasure I summon!!!!
where my mind went unironically
yup yup
you are my speciallll
Roastimg the bbeg before he even reveals himself
They retconned everything
Hello chat
Hello
Hi
Hello, Alleycat
What if I told you he was completely immune to cantrips and up to level 3 spells?
So I haven't actually tried, but how difficult is it to make an Enspelled Armor/Staff/Weapon that works properly with the dndbeyond homebrew rules?
Doesnt prevent emotional damage
They are still dealing massive aoe psychic dmg
its just crafting an uncommon item no? (depending on the spell I guess) but its just normal crafting rules right?
Its an Elder Entity, I'm sure it doesn't feel anything (Which is why it'd be immune to fear, charm and other things, I'll have to work on his statblock)
He's also immune to psychic damage in particular
or is there sth else u mean by this
What if I threw gale at it?
"nuke incoming"
Like, making an Enspelled item that works properly, with the charges and the set DC/spell attack bonus, etc. The Homebrew system for dndbeyond is fiddly and difficult to properly parse
There is any waterskin that its infinite water or something like that?
Gale as an improvised weapon
I dunno, it'd probably destroy his mind?
you mean for homebrew spells? or in general, bc why not just recycle other enspelled items and copy the spell effect onto it?
"kaboom? Yes Rico, kaboom"
alchemy jug technically
Doesn't Gale exploding destroy.. EVERYTHING?
not all at once but kind of infinite, AND YOU CAN MAKE MAYONNAISE
?
The Enspelled Item by default doesn't have any spells in it, it just has the rules for it
Alchemy jug has a daily limit doesnt it?
MAYONNAISE ON AN ESCALATOR
yes
but it still produces "infinite amounts" over time with no real input
His bomb can level a city the size of Waterdeep
Can I drink from the alchemy jug like a milk jug
sure why wouldnt u
how do you become a good dungeon master?
It can produce milk too, it can be a literal milk jug
Warlock pact
Practise and patience
I mean just add the spells you want, for DC consider what you find appropriate, if its hard to come by, make the DC higher, if not then not
Ah, then that case..
Good luck destroying an Elder God with a lowly nuke smh
if it proves too effective, lower the DC, or take inspiration from poisons of similar cost, e.g. low / bad poisons usually have a DC of 13, while the better ones get up to 19
so 13-15 should be ok for Tier 2 imo
Gale is not a lowly nuke 😤
or depending on the spell a bit higher actually
how does it get better than a nuke?
2 nukes
ok maybe a tzar bomba
A netherese orb nuke
mhhhhh
It's netherese flavor
Wrong
I'm commissioning Dispater to make a nuke for me
funnily enough, making a nuke really isnt that hard (at least the steps are simple, the materials are whats hard to come by)
so in the setting of dnd you could make it work as long as u have some steam punk elements
I'm a gale romancer 🥺, he just wants to eat my shoes once in a while
It’s probably obvious but I am also a Gale lover
Oi, handyman! Can ya make a handy BOMB? With extra devil power?
And 4x4 on a raft, give it axel grease, a shimmy and a spine an-
I couldn't tell xD
I simply hate everyone in Baulders Gate
based
Shovel is nice
Real OG's live in waterdeep
Gale is from waterdeep lol
Yeah xD
Not my concern!
Tbf even if I didn’t like Gale I’d still love tara
I don't consider Gale a real individual.
||Anyone who Beds Mystra is instantly a loser in my eyes||
🧍 elaborate
Don't worry, I can fix him
That might be a spoiler, I apologize lmao
is ok tokii
I DID fix him
I also did
Also tbh the games like two year old I don’t think it’s a but deal
Real men sleep with Demons,
Just like my Goliath Elements Monk
He has a demon husband
Uh huh
Okey but does your man have 6 Arms?
Does your man have a tressym? Checkmate
Ah a Tokii'ism again
Yeah, actually, I believe
I've never played Baldur's Gate, so it probably a big deal to me if I ever sat down to do it
Then they habe good taste
A Lawful Good Monk Demigod with his gay Chaotic Evil Nightmare Shepherd lover
It's amazing
WHY DOES MY BRAIN DEFAULT TO MALE PRONOUNS ON EVERYTHING
I did mention they were guys
because habbits?
Because it has been the default in the English language for literal centuries.
Good
TwT okey back to topic
Gale has a cool beard tho
Pipe down, get back in the Waterdeep chat.
And a cool earring
Gale is best wizard because he is the dumbest caster in his current hemisphere
Gale is the dumb wizard representation I’ve been waiting for
Low wisdom wizard at it's finest
I wouldn't say Dumb, when regarding a wizard, I'd say lacks wisdom and common sense
Gale: uwu ||I need to impress lover! I know I will tinker with thing that killed lover and show her I can master the thing that killed her! ||
Certifiable idiot behavior
||Oh oops I have a bomb in my chest…hmm…oh I just got an Illithid parasite, better not tell anyone I might blow up||
||Mystra don't even love you, Gale, you simpering simpleton!!!||
Gale: ||You know the arch wizard of a civ with flying cities? I am better? I am built different.||
Whoop- folk BG3 Spoilers!
sighs poor Tokii, Lord of goofy
It wasn't just ME
||this is literally his character arc||
That being said I like it when characters are flawed like that. It makes them more realistic
On another note, if I catch any of you playing a Spellfire sorcerer, I'm coming after you.
Cheers folk! Remember we got #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers if you want to rag further on our favourite magic boot disposal.
I ain't even mad at Mystra anymore
||Leave my nuclear bomb alone /j||
I am, she needs to be out down, permanently smh
i am this close to making freaky remarks
TBF there is no better alternatives lmao
Not that the WizardTM is perfect but Mystra is her own whole can of worms
lemme take a walk outside
i'm a spellfire sorcerer x'D
Real chads know the best Deity is Helm
Weird way to spell ellistrae
That's my Warlocks Patron, actually
Ellistrae is a dare I say D tier god.
Still the best one
Murlynd. Your rootin, tootin, 'fire-wand' shootin' sherrif-paladin god of artificery.
Her whole thing is no cloths, dancing, and you don't gotta be evil 👉 👈
i'm personally a raven queen enjoyer
Yep
Raven Queen is also great
Vhaeraun was an option, but I didn't want him to deal with getting his power from Lolths evil brat of a son
Ah yes Hela herself- I mean Wee Jas- I mean- /jk
Best Low Wis Artificer representative in fiction in general I've found is Uncle Ford from Gravity Falls
I like Vhaeraun, truly underrated Drow pantheon member
YES
“You’re math cannot defeat my gun” Ford vs a D&D&D Wizard
Raven Queen is the Goth Gal you keep seeing at the club until you realize they got -5 levels in personality.
Nah rhats shar
I think Ford is an Idiot, Stan is definetly the intellectual between them, I don't care what anyone says smh
They have it in common
I had my best DM moment with a player who played a character connected to her, I very much have a soft spot for her now
Shar gots personality. It ain't a good one but she got one.
Also true
i love that shes a literal crow collecting shiny things
Her personality is being a hater
So are most Evil deities, let's be real
Based /jk
Nah bhaal’s personality is uhhhhhhhhh
Malar is the most based of Evil Deities
He said “most” not “all” evil deities
She should have more friends considering it is in vogue to hate Mystra rn. And she has been Mystra's number one op since the Days of thunder
Like Vecna technically does his bit for self improvement than being a hater
I mean how can you not hate a god who's so bad at staying alive 😭
That’s actually true weirdly enough
Can't wait for Shar to smoke that Mystra pack
Lolth mean while is absolutely a hater
She will just pay Cyric to do it again
Then block him on all socials
Tiamat too as hatred is part of her gimmick too I suppose
PLEASE, that's the ONLY reason I like Cyric
Tiamat is cool
Anyone who kills Mystra is alright in my books
Best god that stands on bidness. Gilgeam.
He took "Dragons Sucks." And ran with it to the end.
His 3e key art is decking tiamat in the face.
I dunno, Hoar and Tempus are pretty good at standing on bidness
War is their bidness
When he returned to Toril he saw a bunch of dragon people in his land. And that just would not do.
I love and hate the dead sibling they gave them in Fizban's to give them and Bahamut a reason they split (good because I like the dynamic, bad because I wish they gave us more canon important gem dragons)
Tempus is actually pretty chill
Technically from my understanding
Bahamut and Tiamat aren't ACTUALLY siblings?
Sardior more like...
Snoredior
Hated them dragonborn so much he summoned an army of demons and restarted the blood war.
"I may have caused the worst possible outcome but MAN [Censored] them Dragons!"
It worked out. As of 1501 them dragonborn lost all their lands, retreated to a mountain home and their nation is so insignificant its not labeled on maps anymore
Im kidding, I love him, I just wish he had more lore
All at the low low price of starting up one of the most dangerous conflicts ever a SECOND time
Yeah, I requested my DM for him to have smth to do with our new Ebberron campaign, at least his prophecy being at least an interpretation of the Prophecy
Gilgeam: Worth it. I got to watch Dragonborn run and cry to Sultana Songal, and I got to watch the Imaskari die to their Mulhorandi subjects a second time Life is good
If you said this sentence to a victorian child I think they might explode
FOR THE LAST TIME, THEY WORKED IN THE MINES, and in the factories. They'd be made of the HARDEST STUFF imaginable, and here would just ask if it meant they would still need to work overtime!
They could handle any food many say would obliterate them. No worse than the coal in their lungs. /j
Fueled on nothing but nicotine and the aching void where whimsy should be
I started to disagree with the saying "dont make players roll for it if failure and success are not both possible".
That’s a saying? I thought it was “don’t make players roll if the desired outcome is impossible”
Or rather a paraphrased version of that
I typed wrong
Ic
Okay, how come?
Im saying even though sometimes some things are not exactly possible how players might want them or failure, but it can be like half success or half failure, OR another completely unrelated outcome from the desired one where it would still help players even though when the desired outcome is impossible
hi!
Or even, you can't fail this, but let's see how well it turns out.
Gooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
YESSSS
knowing you did ur worst and still succeeded is still so good
guys its 1 am for me...
is it common/normal for games to be more than once per week online?
I would never, and I would never be able to
ah
we r gonna do that (face to face twice the week) for only once because we missed a week, but its just for once
Uncommon but far from unknown.
i see, i was just hoping to find a new d&d game that meets pretty often as i hate to wait haha
thanks for the response!
Are rangers bad ?
Not really - just a class that doesn't always meet some folks expectations of what a ranger "should" be
No. Rangers have been good since 1e
Yk I thought so but I was watching a video and the comments said otherwise
Yeah. People follow Youtubers sometimes too much and believe everything they say. So to get "views" many Youtubers will do what other Youtubers do. And if that means crapping on a class they've never played, to get clicks, they will do it and their subscribers will repeat the nonsense.
The answer is that everything is good, but some things are much better
So rangers are good, but they’re by no means broken
How do I report a scam user to an admin?
i think GMs should make players roll for every single thing because rolling more dice equals more fun 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I love ranger, my third fav class
But the fun part of DnD is to not try to be some character that one shots everything but instead just have a fun story I think I get it now
This feels like how I’d explain the chaotic evil alignment
Hi I'm new any advice I started today
Yes, that’s why it’s fine to play whatever class you like, including Ranger. They will absolutely do well (we’re really talking minute differences anyway)
The lower the roll, the better the outcome. Always use the lowest number you can on any dice roll
My only complaint is that rangers should’ve had better QoL improvements like all the other classes did in 2024, and somehow WOTC did the opposite and gave them a bad feature instead
And if you are in a bad situation, use dash for every action you can
Pretty sure it's bad if you get low numbers on a dice roll
Was gonna say, high numbers tend to be better for most things
hai guys
I’d ask what class you’re intending to play, but clearly you like hitting things
No, it’s mitigating bad outcomes. And don’t forget to mention that your backstory hasn’t been explored enough, especially if you’ve been in a dungeon. And always include how you are a loner and do not wish to talk to your party. It’s realistic and immersive
so lowkey i really wanna learn how to play dnd and learn a bunch of stuff abt it bc its always interested me :3
quick question for everyone, what is everyone's favorite 2024 dragon design?
Dnd newcomers is a great place to start!
Ok ty guys
I'm planning on being a soldier or a ranger
But I want my character to be human
Metallic dragons all the way, they look so good
There are a bunch of resources I recommend. But mostly, I’ve found listening into another party’s campaign makes it easier for newbies. Also don’t forget to read the books and let yourself ask questions or need clarification. The #dnd-newcomers channel is perfect for that
Go to #moderator-support and state “can I speak with a moderator?” and wait for a private thread to be created
For me its the black dragon
There’s not really soldier, fighter is the closest equivalent
Unless he means the background
oh okkk tyyy ^^
Oh sorry
Its ok
Ofc, always feel free to ping me in the dnd newcomer’s channel. I’d love to help with anything at all, but I’m not staff so I can’t answer any server related questions, nor do my opinions reflect this space’s values
Totally forgot there’s a background like that, but that sounds like a good character
But tbh I've been interested in dnd for a while but you know it's just so expensive
Then I found the mobile app and got it
I just share the books with my parties at the table or let them borrow
My dm just lets us use his books yeh
x2
For me dnd is like “omg a fun social game” and “yay, solo dnd for relaxation and me time”
Which If I really like dnd I'm probably going to start buying real dnd sets
Wait you can play solo
Yup! I play solo often, it’s different but doesn’t involve any other player characters so I can as in depth wherever I like and skip whatever I don’t. And I can get up and leave for baby whenever
I don’t always want to interact with others for my hobby, and sometimes I’m just way too tired for group play, so I just use resources (mostly free) and play for myself
So it that online or in real life
Yes. There are some pre-written solo adventures. Others you can use certain regular pre-written ones and solo it, but it takes effort not to read ahead of what's coming.
hi
Ok
Ahh so hype for my game tonight, they are deep in the dungeon, very few spell slots, no hit dice and a boss fight a head. One player died 3 times last session
Sup guys
Roll to tie your laces, ooops NAT 1, you accidentally tightened the laces along your heels so much you cut off blood circulation to your feet.
Roll for push a door and get into the house, Nat 1, the house in on fire now
More like, only the door is left standing
We finally got a new UA, I can stop tweaking now!
Roll to get out of bed, nat 1, you fall out of bed and hit your head on your nightstand on the way down, you're unconscious for the next hour and are concussed, -1d4 from every roll you make.
Congrats, you opened the door so hard and there was someone behind the door. Its the guy that was about to give you all the info you needed for finding the legendary alchemy jug.
You smashed him so hard that his brain is all around the room. Revivify doesnt work, use true resurrection or wish.
the temptation to make one about going to the bathroom, nat 1 and you slip, hit your nap against something and die.
yeah
i mean hell, wake up, make a con save, on a failure you pull a hamstring and have a halved movement speed
Literally just the dnd honor among thieves scene
yay

yay sound effect
Where do I go to flame DMS who kick everyone and block them without a word?
I don't want my character to fight while wearing a backpack but also want the storage for items
and I don't want to just throw my bag on the ground before combat starts
any suggestions?
If the backpack doesn't hinder the character for combat, why does it matter?
Or invest in a riding dog or horse that can carry your stuff. But Alternatively can be killed or stolen and might blow stealth rolls.
just for aesthetic and roleplay purposes
I don't think wearing it while fighting fits his character
Hate to tell you, but lots of combatants in real life carry lots of equipment with them as they fight
Bandoliers are fashionable
I just flavour most characters as not having packs while in combat and it works well enough
it's the sorta thing which can quite easily just be handwaved
but also, if you're established enough and have some budget to pick up magic items, a bag of holding might be what you need
bag of holding is video game inventory if that's what you're looking for. it's often depicted as a small bag rather than a full on rucksack
You could flavor it like a crossbody sling bag. Little more aerodynamic looking
Bag of holding is also great. Smaller profile by far
that was my intention but the campaign is just starting and the dm doesn't want anyone starting with a bag of holding
I'm hoping I can get one relatively early game tho
Have you considered the Humble Artificer/j
I already made my character a sorlock
You can pretty easily just not address it and act as if in combat your character doesn't have a pack on. Pretty common in games as far as i've seen. I've actually never seen a DnD combat where it's assumed players are wearing packs and its relevant
(/j = joke)
Unless the DM says they have to account for it, which usually doesn't come up
Is that smth you need to account for Ender?
I don't think so
It was just personal preference
thank you for the suggestions
What warlock subcalss?
Hexblade
Hello
2014 Net
5e is bad because you can't make an effective bloons td build
4e fixes this
I feel like it’s gotta be between darts, sickle and club.
But club can be shillelaghed
Are we limiting it to mundane weapons?
Yes
Yeah I’d agree with sickle & darts
What's the btd build in 4e
Sickles are just a worse dagger
Wait……
Darts…exist
Hey, I'll have you know Rune Giant Barbarian loves them
For the Druid that wants a ranged weapon without using cantrips
Or do Druids prefer Slings instead
Epic
Epic indeed
I love slings because of the Homunculus abuse strat with it (have them attack with the magic Stone touched stones with a sling and it uses your stats to attack)
Ez triple multi attack lol
Do you think +2 is a good modifier?
I have a paladin and I have +2 in charisma so, I don’t know if it’s good number knowing I would have proficiency in magic
(Starting level 1)
Proficiency in magic?
Yeah +2 is the standard for most secondary stats
I mean, my spell cast ability
+2 is fine though yeah
Okay!
Just know when you get Aura of Protection you need to max your Cha. fast. One of the best class features in the game
anyone thats played a paid DM game, has it been worth paying for over a non-paid game? or is it just the same but you paid for it?
I've known paid DMs but don't play, usually you're getting the same adventure they've run XX times because it's not worth their time to prep something different for your group, so I think they tend to be a little railroady
It's definitely DM dependant, but my experience was better props occasionally (like voice changers/maps, etc) but not much else
Is it a good idea to try and have our Druid prepare PWT so I can prepare Zephyr Strike?
Asking because idk if it's just simpler to take PWT anyways and leave Druid to it
Druid has more spells that are in stiff competition with its level 2 spell slots, Rangers should take up PWT duty
I mean, Druid has 10 prepared spells
Plus a Mark of Handling
I've got the ones from Gloomstalker and 4 prepared spells. Probably for the rest of the campaign too
Just trying to have Druid swap Entangle for PWT
Druid should keep Entangle, you take PWT
More lockdown isn't bad, you also can't use Entangle at the same time as PWT
Casting time is an action, almosy forgot
And Druid's better spells are all concentration
I'll just drop Zephyr Strike, then
Most of Druid's better spells are concentration in general
Fog Cloud is a nice double edge sword. It blocks most casters because they can’t see, both ally and enemy. It also removes opportunity attacks because you can’t see each other. A neat balancing move.
More of a “change the terrain of the battlefield” type spell
Probably not going to choose that. I will start taking Rogue Levels soon
Good luck!
I also only get 4 prepared spells, and I'm taking AE, PWT, Entangle, and CoE
Dropping your character’s versatility for specialization is a useful tactic. Hope it pays off.
CoE especially will be fun for when I start making Potent Poisons
Poisoned condition makes escaping Entangle harder, restrained makes CoE's poisoned arrows harder to miss
So D&D seems to be putting out UA subclasses like a madman, since the beginning of 2025 there's been like a dozen UA subclass drops, often containing specific themes like arcane, psyonic, apocalyptic horror.
I wasn't following it at the time, but my understanding is there was only a handful of subclasses released as UA from 2014 - 2025, they've probably already released more UA subclasses than all of 5e
These subclasses also don't seem to match upcoming books as far as I know
Does anybody know what these subclasses are being released and tested for? Or is it a big mystery
I don't think we have any officially known books and dates coming. But I think one of the books supposed to be coming is related to the Red Wizards of Thay.
That's true I remember hearing about the Wizards of Thay release.. but that would more likely be an adventure which usually don't contain many character options 🤔
Yeah I agree.
And each of these UA drops contain minimum 4 subclasses
Maybe they're just trying to figure out which class fits the horror theme best and then they'll just release one 😂
Same for Arcana and Psyonics and the others
All I know is player options sell books. Maybe they have a bunch of smaller books coming based off specific themes/topics.
Eberron Forge of the Artificer was laughably small and full of player options. So maybe stuff like that.
I'm hoping for the reworks of the older subclasses, specifically Shepherd, but also dreading it
so remaking some of the previous subclasses + more kinda makes sense
Idk about you guys but i hate playing edgy characters specifically those kinda of rogues, as my most recent one is a detective rogue like character rather than a thief
