No im new to it
theres an official one just google "dnd character sheet" and go to the one that says "media.wizards.com" thats a pdf
i recommend finding a game and playing! Check out #find-a-game
I believe artificers can make bombs if I can remember correctly
A cleric’s role is typically dictated by their subclass. Like a war cleric is more likely gonna be a martial while a life cleric is typically gonna lean into healing
Ill go do a character sheet first
well artificers can make ANYTHING if your dm is cool enough about it
funny enough the only class that can actually make bombs raw is creation bards since they can make the firearms from the dmg which incldues grenades
my recommendation is to make a character who's specifically for a game, rather than making a character and trying to fit them into a game
Do i have to do EVERYTHING on the character sheet?
are you using d&d beyond?
Mine is. So I have him make firebombs lmao. But he's also a Bladesinger. I read into it and it's a very potent multiclass
In luna i trust
d&d beyond is the official place to get d&d content, and has a built in sheet builder.
Dndbeyond is a character sheet website/app
Oh ok
yeah that is also a great option
Yeah, I typically recommend building a character after finding a campaign an not before
I just really like the pdf since I dont really like dndbeyond for personal reasons
ultimately, yes. You'll want to essentially fill out everything.
Building a character for fun is fine, but if I’m looking to join a campaign, I wanna build a character that fits the campaign and party
walled garden, huh?
unironically the jocat character sheet video is a great way to learn how to read it
jocat is good, no doubt
jocat is so good when you dont got someone in your ear telling you he's corny for loving women that much
My character is more chaotic good than anything, because him having the penchant for setting things on fire and blowing up stuff is part of the comic relief that comes with the character
Guys im new at D&D so are my group of friends. We are thinking of starting to play and I am wondering if it would be good if i am the Dungeon Master even though I haven't played yet. I've read the basic rule book and will start reading the Dungeon Master's Guide book for pointers.
a lot of creators are good, and a lot have haters.
you got this! have fun!
I started as a dm for the love of god dont, it will make everything so much harder, just find someone to dm for you please or just someone to co-dm to make sure everything goes well
strong recommendation to try out some games as a player first, and/or watch some live plays
Go for it!
You can definitely start playing D&D as the DM! It's not required to be a player first, though some people will say otherwise.
Sounds like you've already set yourself up by doing your reading etc.
Anything we can help with? There is more to do as a DM when it comes to playing the game, but again, it's definitely doable.
?newdm
no? hm
I think most players that dont try to be problem players. Try not to be problematic or say anything about necromancers. I mean personally im not a fan of having undead within our camp or party just weird. I understand maybe not everyone can love nature like me... however I think we can all agree to not love death and zombies. Just a weird party concept with necromancers in general.
Might be only active in #dnd-newcomers ?
eh?
huh...?
Was referring to you saying "build a character that fits your table"
i'm still a bit lost
" I think we can all agree to not love death and zombies" was the part that confused me a bit, why wouldn't we like having zombies at our disposal?
the smell, and appearance? and maybe moral implications?
i mean sure, a good-aligned cleric of like, lathander might strongly disapprove
I'm confused
Okay so i have been thinking of watching some gameplays on YouTube, i will do that. I will try and find a DM who would be available for a gameplay and i will learn on the go (tried getting people but they dont reply)
that's the more party-specific side of things, you might piss off the ancients paladin and the good cleric, but not everyone
zombies have a tendency to not be repairable
Thanks to all with your recommendations! Really appreciate it!
yes, hence: make something that fits your table
yeah, but in that message it read like it was something that applied to all tables, so i was a bit lost
...making a character who fits a table? that ... should?
Set them on fire
no, the part that i explicitly quoted
did i say something about zombies?
druid did, i was responding to them
That was Drunk. Don't worry about it, let's move on.
Guys another question. How was your first gameplay of D&D?
i mean you could but why not have a Druid that uses their Conjure Animals to summon a boar that they light on fire and send at someone?
it was way back in like.... 1992? i played an elf who immediately died to a spike pit trap
i played a Ranger with Javelins who died to a blank letter full of anthrax.
Daft. But we were all teenagers aside from our teacher running the session, so it was to be expected. Stirges happened at some point.
low-level bladesinger wizard who rolled so well he ended up doing 80% of the party's damage while everyone else kept rolling terrible on their attack rolls.
My character doesn't work that way. He'll set any enemy on fire because he's just that crazy.
i thought "sturgis" and was like "your party went to a biker rally?"
Heh. Those mosquito like things, nasty little beasts.
yuh
a boar is perfectly fitting, then! most animals have a fight, flight, or freeze response, but boars only have fight! people put crossguards on spears because a boar would rather make its current impalement worse if it means it gets to charge you rather than run away!
Except my character is a Bladesinger/Artificer multiclass
i'm not sure if setting a poor boar on fire is more morally acceptable than raising a zombie
a boar will charge through your spear if it means it gets to rip you in half!
As a druid I like to save things that haven't yet started decaying. However if it has already began decaying. Allow the spores to do their job in world. I played full spores druid and didn't get undead. Im just personally not a fan of necromancers. I personally believe they should be bad guys and not apart of good party's. Even when I dont play druid or paladin or cleric I still dont like them. I never say anything I always let the wizard do their things. But im just personally not a fan. So within this I am claiming @spring light is right in saying before making a character. Find the table and see what's allowed and what is frowned upon etc.
don't worry, boars are anything but poor. they're an invasive species to pretty much any given environment because it's really difficult to make a creature that aggressive into prey
if a random pig or two can escape from its farm, their new young will be boars, who will then devastate the local ecosystem because boars are huge
Like the boar spear. Yeah. I know. I watch a lot of Forged In Fire. That's how I learn about all the different kinds of weapons the finalists make and why they were designed the way they were.
And as a player, this would be excellent to bring up at session 0 and work out with everybody.
now i wanna make a pig/boar themed barbarian
yeah, i interpreted the part of the message i quoted to be an universal claim that "we all agree on this" when it was a really table-specific thing, so this makes sense.
personally i do like them, among my existing characters my wizard would be thrilled that you can raise the dead, my sorcerer would be envious that he can't and the oathbreaker would congratulate you on no longer letting things like ethical implications keep you from using darker methods as what he views them to be: "a tool like everything else"
For some reason I want my character to wield a Xiphos style blade
as a dm, i have no strong feelings about what my players want to play - as long as everyone can agree and have fun together.
no intentionally antagonistic against other pc character though, i'm a meanie and that's where i draw my line
i have a DM who's said "now if you want to play an Aarakocra, i won't stop you, but you should know I hate birds."
eyeroll
i actually don't see myself playing a good-aligned cleric/paladin or druid anytime soon, idk, not my type of character. my tastes are closer to "power-hungry magician", which i guess is relatively common
Hey chat what are the rules on the 100 sided dice?
Is it very similar to the 20?
my wizard ended up arguing a lot with our paladin for that reason, he was very cold and ruthless
roll 2d10
With my luck
I would roll a nat 1 99% of the time
ideally your dice set will have "percentile dice" which is a d10 and a second d10 that goes by 10s
in a lot of games that focus on rolling a d100, you want to "roll under" so a nat 1 would be good
Isn't 20 and 100 supposed to be the best numbers in dnd?
there aren't a lot of 100s rolled in dnd
Speaking of which, are Xiphos style swords allowed in D&D?
if you are rolling a d100 you are probably selecting something from a table
like wild magic, or reincarnate race
at least that's the impression i'm under
I Bet my shiny metal @#$ I would get the worst roll
everyone feels that often, i rolled 9 nat1s in a row last night when i dmed
Daaaaaaaaaaamn
DMs can use d100 when randomizing magic items from a table - That is probably the most common use case
Image search... looks like a shortsword from here. Sure, go for it.
my warlock kobold picked up something fruit-like that he really shouldn't eat and when he does, he'll have wild magic surges for days. that's when i'm using the d100 next.
It's a sword that was used by the ancient Greeks. It's light, quick, and incredibly deadly
Or even a Gladius. It's very similar to the Greek Xiphos, but it has a more aggressive design
we got Longswords, Shortswords, Rapiers, Scimitars, and Greatswords that can be reflavored into any sword you'd like
Cool! My gladiator Mani has a flail with the striking head shaped like a skull.
Anyone else got cool weapons?
I see you guys speak of nat… whats that?
Gladiators and legionaires used the Gladius, with Gladiator being the sword's namesake. Like i said, its design is very similar to the Greek Xiphos, but it has a more aggressive design
flamberge, my beloved.
Natural 1 or 20, abbreviated as Nat 1 (or Nat 20) is when that big ol' randomiser shows that number on the roll.
Reflavor an existing weapon as one
They're important because on an attack roll a 1 always misses and a 20 is a critical hit, regardless of modifiers.
last night, one of my (3) bards ignored this kobold who said the sword in the stone was a prop his master enchanted to pull a prank on his friend later. they were in a cellar with a bat infestation, and pulling out the sword made a massive fart sound, which attracted a few small bats and a giant one they had to fight
the sword is a 1d4 bludgeoning wooden sword enchanted with the fart boom that adds a 1d8 thunder to it
Nat 1 or nat 20 also make the distinction between getting a 20 with modifiers, or a 1
Ooh, can you describe it?
Stupid question: How do i do that?
i have a Rogue with a shortbow that uses screws and a helix system to collapse into a tiny little pocketable geometry and string, and her other weapon is a reflavored dagger that's essentially a gauntlet with a Katar on it, which is bound to a spring system to make it concealable
Punchy.
i have no idea what to call that fart sword, but it got the point across that the wizard owning the cellar was the least serious person ever
Pick weapon you want it to be
Decide which weapon mechanically fits that weapon
Get dm approval
Congrats your weapon is now in game
Oh thats it?
tbf if you aren't making any mechanical changes you might not even need to ask the DM
Yep
Probably, but never hurts. Weapons are quite a central piece of a characters combat
also known as a flame blade or a wave blade. It comes in one handed and two handed varieties. Its called such because the blade itself isn't straight, but a has a wave pattern (~~~>) going along it's length. The reason for this design is open to debate, but the leading two theories is because it makes wounds that bleed more, and that its really good at parrying spears, negating their reach advantage.
Maybe the weapon you want it to look like doesnt fit the setting or the dm disagrees on what weapon youre picking mechanically
yuh
Ah, that one. Neat!
I've seen it in Forged In Fire
Pretty neat. But my favorite swords are the Katana, Khopis, Falchion, Viking Sword, Crusader Sword, Khopesh, Xiphos and Gladius. Scimitars are pretty neat too
wait nvm they can read that here
cast find greater table
that dm could very well do a 10 year timeskip and suddenly your pc is in their deathbed from age
Best spell in the game
“You find one made of Mahogany, that will be a few thousand dollars.”
Attacks that knock you prone while flying is gonna kick your ass
-# dammit
I never beat the spell save sadly /j
😔
i love my current table, i only wish they were more observant but i'm sure they'll get there
Aarakocra players wanting to fly, until they realize the Dungeons have a ceiling.
Just needs to be like 15-20 feet high to stay out of melee
Or a very simple ghost encounter charisma save
Oh and my other favorite bladed weapon - the glaive
You just break the ceiling, if it’s a building ur in the air, if ur underground then you cause a cave in! And who doesn’t love a cave in! :3
The spear has nothing on a glaive. Change my mind.
“You break the ceiling causing Rocks to fall and you to die.”
-# but it was funny :3
Truly getting to fly high now
Yeah all of the sudden everything is in caves at max 30 foot ceilings
If players flying just out of melee range is a problem, just give enemies crossbows?
looks at average 10ft high ceiling
-# breaks ceiling again
The places with a higher ceiling usually have creatures who can also Fly
Stunning strike :3
Crossbows suck. Unless of course you're able to make a repeating crossbow like in Terraria, then that's a different story
Its not as easy as you make it seem if you've read the monster manual. Simply flying can negate 1400+ monsters. Flying is incredibly useful in dnd
Raw^ now i agree give 90% of monsters ranged options
darn
I need to do that in my game honestly
Many of them have high saves, legendary resistances, and are half the name of the game.
I just had a thought
depends on the height of the ceiling tbh, melee is lul after like 20+ ft
Not necessarily
pre rolls death saves
“It was fun while it lasted”
Is it possible to create an arcane assassin type character? Like my character in Skyrim?
Large monster is 10 foot tall. If they also have a 10 foot reach they can get you
how
Most probably
Thats why I never understood dms who would fly 10 feet above the ground saying I couldn't reach them with a sword lol
as a DM if flying is a huge issue with your players, theres little minor ways to handle it as well. Perhaps requiring more rests after combat or ration consumption has to go up due to expending so much energy during combat
To add to nealen's statement, melee lul
Some monsters have 15 foot reach
If you are huge I think thats 20 feet tall? Gargantuan can be even taller
Arcane trickster, or if you’re talking conjuration daggers, soulknife
Fair enough
You can also do a multiclass like rogue assassin/wizard conjuration
My arcane assassin has the invisibility spell, bound dagger (basically conjures up a dagger made of magical energy), bound bow is pretty much the same
Legends of avantris and CR really made me wanna play DND
Probably arcane trickster then, just flavor a magic bow as being a bound bow
arcane tricksters
oh i didn't see every single other response saying the same thing, mb
I’d say go soulknife then find some way of getting invisibility separately (probably via a feat)
doesnt shadowtouched give invis, idr
My memory tells me there is a feat that does, I don’t know which one it is though
it says invis + one lv1 spell, i'm so smart
Hello? I'm new to DND and I need help?
yeah, a level 1 spell from necromancy or illusion, and a level 2 invisibility.
you'd need to get lv2 spell slots from somewhere, so a weird wonky multiclass
Hello?
probably not very preferable
you can cast them each once withotu spending a spell slot
Hi!
yeah i mean to cast more
I need help with certain things cause I'm new to DND
Have +5 in dex then expertise in stealth for an obscenely high stealth mod
it's at least three levels of a full caster to get lv2 spell slots to use shadowtouched's invis more, that's probably not worth it+ at that point that caster most likely has it in their spell list. i wonder if there's another feat that gives invis so you could use it more.
This may not be as good as invisibility but it is infinitely usable
roguelock 💀
Probably go to #dnd-newcomers
Im gonna be honest
Watching Stranger Things made me want to try D&D out soooo badly
I have played a bit of Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance before i have watched ST
a lot of folks got drawn into d&d from that
casts true polymorph
plays a druid
asks the dm reeeeeaaaallly nicely
it depends on how flexible your dm is with "flavor" but there is a bird race, aarocokra
I dont understand😭
there's 3rds party content; humblewood, which can definitely have an ostrich
i got drawn in by bg3, which is also common
another big draw. Critical Role also draws a lot.
Illusion would be the more appropriate path. I have no interest in necromancy
I have read a book of R.A Salvatore before… never finished it
he's saying "use the spell true polymorph"
or "be a druid and use wildshape"
Oh cool
or she. or them. i don't mean to assume gender.
True polymorph lets you turn various things into creatures, Druids have wild shape so can probably become one
bg3 prepared me for a lot of dnd combat rules, but multiclassing just isn't as good here, which came off as a shock.
multiclassing in 2024 is kind of. . . pants.
Hi everyone do you know where I can buy miniature painted for 40 $
Im he/him
a lot of things did really. like EB being good. coming from ray of frost damage being extremely easy to quadruple...
So you can turn a tree into a horse?
Usually people put their pronouns in their profile
Yes
yeah, i noticed it's even worse
True polymorph one of the most broken spells in the game, even more so in 2024 tbh because of some wording change
i wouldn't want to play current d&d as a player. . .
but as a dm it's really nice to run
i don't think i could make multiclassing in my table anywhere near as fun in bg3, but i wish i had the creativity to.
Could you be a DM for me and my friend?
Is the knew starter set good?
I still am. Because I've been playing for a while.
I hear it’s very, very good
yes. also the stranger things set is good, and heros of the borderlands.
The one whit helfire club
heros of the borderlands is FANTASTIC 10/10 i love running it
a lot of high-level spells just make delaying them awful
and it has such a nice smell
How much it cost
A few of the uses are:
“Hi BBEG! You’re a rock now! Have fun spending eternity on this random beach!”
“And then I cast true polymorph and become an ancient white dragon”
Its like 1,200 bucks for us
I have the Stranger Things set lmao. Just because it's Stranger Things
i don't really offer that, have you looked in #find-a-game or on the roll20 website?
true polymorph is the one of the best 9th level spells
Not yet
i don't think that's quite right. . .
that sounds like a non doller currency
We don’t know their currency. Could be like that
you're probably right, i read "us" as "USD"
pesos?
Im in South Africa its R1200
$1 = R18.70 or something
ah yeah there it is
oh south africa? my favorite youtube d&d guy was from there. but he doesn't make d&d content anymore.
Whos that?
In europe i think that one dollar is like one euro
ehhh not exactly
His name is Guy, the channel is How to be a Great GM
There was a very silly change made in 2024 (correct me if I’m wrong) where they removed the rules that:
A: you can’t true polymorph into a construct
and
B: you can’t use legendary actions while polymorphed
one euro is a little more valuable but prices tend to translate 1:1 so things tend to be a little more expensive
is british
Okey
peak and they buffed shapechange
Wait $1 = R16.37 now??
I know this is kinda random, but can I polymorph an enemy into a penguin?
I dont know of dnd exsist in europe like in us
yes
Yes
Pretty sure the Legendary action part was always a thing
you can certainly try
$1 = £1.17
Do dnd exist in europe
No in the 2014 MM it specifically said you couldn’t do that
Would it still try to kill you?
dnd is a global phenomona
I don’t see how that contradicts what I said.
I am unsure if they retain their personality or not tbh
I think that in us there is more dnd club
Oh yeah I worded that badly, my bad
There's a lot in America. But I can't say I'm in a club per se. It's more of a local group than anything
dnd was made in the USA so it has the biggest hold there for sure, Loads of us here in Canada have been big into it too
Wait no im confused, what did you mean by this?
Here in the uk quite a lot of schools have dnd clubs
You do know if something isn’t reprinted it’s still a rule right?
Ok i didn’t know
things are still rules even if new options got added
Dnd exists in Europe
Ohhh yeah ok
It’s all 5e after all
an englishman got me into dnd, its big over there for sure
It’s big
I don't know what got me into D&D TBH. I just got into it out of curiosity.
I guess so. So all of the stuff at the start of the 2014 MM applies to 2024 dnd unless it’s specifically changed in the 2024 rules?
Yall know any other online places where I can find a game for me and my gf, we are gmt and minors.
I searched Guy on youtube and found the weirdest stuff
Yes that’s all of 5e’s content
#find-a-game will give you instructions
No i meant outside of the server, god knows ive spent ages looking in #find-a-game.
theres r/lfg
But Stranger Things made me love D&D even more
also hi nerds
Whats a GM?
Why didn’t they just repeat that whole section again then? Bc of this those who have played 2014 and 2024 will rule true polymorph differently to those who only play 2024
Game master / Dungeon master
Game master. The person who runs the game.
There are other servers that have looking for game channels
Oh
👋
Could you gimme them please ?
I Didnt like the end (NO SPOILER)
If the monster and the stat blocks weren't carried over, then they don't exist. At least at the moment. They can always show up again in another book later.
Anyone do retro campaigns?
Oh I’m not in any, I just know that there are
Wait, there is another server in in with one
Meaning?
Ik. It felt rushed and incoherent.
Delightful Derek with the MVP performance tho.
I’ll just private message it to you
depends on what you mean. Use current stats with an older module. (eg 5e character classes in one designed for AD&D 1e etc.?)
Thank u.
(Can’t post links to other servers here)
Older campaigns like Cult of Vecna
I would join if you are recruiting
Not really what I’m talking about. We were discussing true polymorph, which is kinda nerfed by some rules in the opening section of the 2014 MM, but those rules are absent in the 2024 version
My friends and i did that to celebrate the first episode of Stranger Things S4.
That was a freaking funny campaign
In your opinion its beter mike or eddy as a DM
"How to be a Great GM"
QUESTION
Can i create my own monster and add it to my campaign?
yes. look at existing monsters and see if you can just reflavor or reskin one, to start.
I like Eddie. He was great. He was way more animated. Plus he's funny
Found it
Once you're familiar with monster design, you can 100% homebrew your own monsters.
And if that doesn’t work then use the balancing stuff in the DMG (dungeon masters guide) to make it at least relatively balanced
Remember: increasing hp makes fights longer, not harder.
Oh. Well 5e 2024 in general revised a lot of things, but there is nothing mentioned officially that says, "whatever wasn't changed, is still the rule" either in the 2024 books or in any Crawford interviews last two years. For example that rule on flanking/attacks from the rear are no where to be seen. Just a DM's call
Hes more England than South Africa, can hear it in his accent
he'll now and again mention that he's in south africa
Yeah that’s what I think. The other person thought that the 2014 stuff still applied
Oh okay
if you're serious about wanting to be a dm/gm, i'd really suggest watching his content. i still rewatch videos of his.
I will thanks
Matt Coville is another useful guy to watch
it's not localized everywhere but you can find a dnd table in most countries. it's pretty much everywhere in europe though.
Colville? Coville? i forget which
I will check him out
Feral goblins hopped up on jungle juice with the charge attack of a boar (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/4775805-boar) instead of nimble escape? Just a thought.
writing this down
If my character saw that, he'd just set them all on fire while laughing like a maniac
he can certainly try
An admirable strategy!
One gold star for you my good sir!
Maybe i can build my own DND table? My uncle does woodwork
That would be really cool
eventually, sure. i'd try playing first and see how you like it.
Yeah definitly
Well yes, but that's their default reaction to most things as I gather.
demoted to very elaborate coffee table if you end up not liking it
It’s a good reaction!
He also tends to go overboard sometimes. Like in the Cult of Vecna campaign when after Vecna crumpled to the ground, he he hit him over the head with a stick he found to see if Vecna was down for good.
Maybe on my first playthrough i should set every npc on fire?
i'd advise against it
very sad dm noises
generally i feel very exhausted as a dm when i have pcs that are murder hobos
Maybe not
Ruining the whole story and all quests
so very rarely are there actual murder hobos at my irl table
My character only sets enemies on fire
that's a good way to get uninvited to the game, tbh
Murder hobos make me want to give them a 3 vampires 2 archmages 5 red dragons encounter
🤣
murder hobos make me say: "No, that doesn't happen."
hi peoples! probably not the best place to go but anyways i would like to start dnd but no clue where to start ive made characters online but ive never done a campaign but would love to! any advice helps
Nah, I’d wanna make it personal. A single ridiculously powerful humanoid
Just have an old man with seven gold canaries walk up to them, that’ll teach em not to mess with important npcs
(This is a joke, do not do this unless the party are really annoying)
Nothing ever happens
Although the best choice is just to kick them
No need to escalate it
it's usually with minor npcs in my campaigns, my players saw a kobold in a cute king costume and sneak-attacked it the first thing. i spontaneously invented an enchantment that nullified the hit and cast thunderwave on them. then dialogue ensued and things went nicer than just murder.
Im stil cracking😂
welcoem to the hobby! You're gonna have a lot of fun.
It's good practice to make characters, but it's even better to build a brand new one especially for the campaign you join.
Check out #find-a-game or even the website roll20
My character will do less violent things with NPCs. Like poke them with a stick.
no mercy, roll save for the thunderwave
the npc is poked.
It’s fine to kill npcs, just don’t be mad if this happens to you some day
"The npc calls the guards"
i didn't think that would be a good enough solution to get my pcs to talk with npcs. i assumed they'd just try attacking again, and in this event i'd tell them to roll initiative
i mean if your character actually WOULD be an idiot and jerk, then yeah sure okay.
My character sometimes acts like an idiot even though he isn't one
reminds me of a gag dnd thingy on youtube. Assassin was roleplaying getting his assignment, and when the player heard his target was an old man with the gold cannaries... just his face as he realized what was happening OOC but couldn't say anything IC.
the old man with gold canaries
hey it's make believe, we should all feel comfortable to be silly sometimes
oh it's my favorite dreadwyrm
I hear DND is like Skyrim, and can sneak upon a blacksmith and steal all his weapons and gold pieces
That is absolutely peak, was is the old man with the canaries Im thinking of or were they trolling the dnd veterans?
unlikely.
not impossible
you can certainly try
wait, feeding dragons is banned? damn!
Im kidding i saw it in a video "XP to level 3"
blacksmith is a retired level 20 adventurer
If any game is remotely close to DnD, it's Knights of the Old Republic
good skits
Wait like Star wars?
i am guilty of retired lv20 adventurer in my very first campaign
It's a Star Wars game
Oh
The skit never made it far enough we saw it, there were distractions on the way with the other PCs meeting up.
Would being in a polygamy be alright?
that'll be a discussion for you, your dm, and your table.
Dang
What about irl?
I'm actually looking for a online group 🤷🤷 to start a campaign I'm new to this and newish to the game I've been apart of a couple lol but I use discord ( of course) and DND beyond
this isn't the server to discuss that
check #find-a-game and the website roll20
Probably go to #find-a-game
I thought i could just make someone laugh but obviosuly i failed🤦♂️
Thank you
Knights of the Old Republic uses DnD mechanics and stats. It's a pretty fun game, but nearly impossible to find
i have a wizard running an inn in an unusually oversized demiplane, so i guess he works well as a retired lv20
Ok that’s peak
I call it "the last resort", it's a spa + inn for high-level interdimensional travelers and you need a very specific scroll to get in from anywhere
Is lvl 20 the highest level? Or is there no level cap?
In one of my campaigns the party is accompanied by a bound evil from the dawn of time in the form of a talking cat shaped thing called mogget
(Yes this is a book reference)
I was thinking of running Obelix as an in keeper lvl20 retired monk or barbarian I’m not sure yet
without homebrew, level 20 is the cap.
I love that, kitty
Interdimensional like Rick?
it depends. some dm will share their content
there's rules for playing past level 20, but its mostly just getting more feats at that point. 20 is the effective cap.
yeah sure. like rick.
ah yeah, right right. i forget about that because it's kinda... blah
my party's heading to the abyss and the last resort serves as an extremely safe place to long rest. issue is time passes significantly faster in there, because the wizard's also speedrunning aged wine in the cellar. so staying too long can advance things too much outside.
And as much as they are bound to serve the party, it doesn’t mean they have to be nice, so i get to have fun with sarcasm when roleplaying them
Paragon levels my beloved
I've done Rick and Morty campaigns before. Pretty wild, broh.
Speedrunning aged wine was not somewhere I thought that would go
i kinda wanna go and grab the rick and morty box
i have the content, it's kinda... meh.
but i do like boxes
it's like, 7 days outside is 1 day here, and 7 months if you go in the basement
wait, no, the inverse?
english is confusing, at times.
I have both Stranger Things and Rick and Morty. Although I prefer classic DnD because I can be as insane as I want, as long as it's within reason
Boxed sets should make more of a come back besides just tie ins and starter sets.
Give me my dark sun setting guide in a boxed set.
if i want to play as a player, i player pf1e.
I wonder why people leave this sever after getting a game started?
I get the idea, and am using this as a campaign premise at some point. (Wizard speedruns aged wine but it destroys the time stream or smth)
I have an npc like that, he's the severed floating head of a lv20+ tier wizard who was disturbed by a kobold raiding his crypt (yes this is a reference to nash'rah)
they have fulfilled their purpose
LMAOOOO that's so funny
say, I've got to ask. Has anyone ever had an idea for an NPC but never knew where to throw them in?
Yeah. Came in got what they wanted and got out.
Still make no sense tho, because you can still use it to find more players for games later
Mine is a pretty much direct copy of a book character (Mogget from the old kingdom series) as the campaign was set in that books universe
now he follows the kobold everywhere and can be persuaded only by this kobold pc to help in combat by a very high roll
🤷 i can't claim to know the mind of everyone, but that seems the most reasonable to me
Idk, that doesn’t make much sense tho
Yea. But this community is not everyone's cup of tea. There was a bit where it was kinda rough. And not the most welcoming place.
Does he still have all his spells and stuff?
And besides it's an open server. They can always just come back.
True
yeah, but he only ever uses 3. a fire cantrip, lv3 fireball, or "delete that general direction" on a nat20.
It just seems strange to me tbh
I want to read one of my DND books cover to cover but I can't decide which ones, I've got all the core rule books (MM, PH and DMG) for 1st edition, 5th edition and 5.5e aswell as a bunch of other books for 5th edition (e.g. xanthars book of everything) thoughts on what I should read first?
any other time he's just floating around yelling insults
“Delete that general direction” peak
humans are strange in general
player's handbook, then dmg
Especially in dnd
Reading the whole PHB is probably the best starting point.
especially anywhere. humans weird yo
the kobold needs to rp a convincing reason to make him help or he rolls persuasion with disadvantage, but on a nat20 or 25+, you get 20d20 damage in a 180ft cone with a dex save dc of 35. also turns that part of the map into a pit of lava.
Whichever one corresponds to the version you are actually playing.
this is my attempt at trying to get my pcs to rp more
Fire dmg?
everything he's willing to do is fiery destruction
Mogget is also fun to roleplay because we have a low intelligence character in the party, who mogget tries to convince to take off his collar (which unbinds him)
"do it and i will buy you lunch"
"...two lunches?"
"oooooh nooo my collar is tight i'm choking save meeee" (fakes passing out)
Any time they greet him he does “can you take off my collar?”, then everyone collectively says “NO!” and he goes “worth a shot”
I have decided to tell the players (who are low level) that not only is the binding spell on mogget powerful, it is in fact more powerful than them
Just to warn them off
Saving this idea
my barbarian would instantly ignore that and wrestle with the cat
As I say to my players when they try to grab/hit mogget
you can try
I mean he looks like a cat
But in reality he is cat shaped
This makes a lot of difference
Peak idea
Mogget would probably remind them what whisky ages too, and so they should diversify their business
they can enthuse about how their (insert party members) are stupid, worthless maggots who can never do anything right
Yeah this is exactly it
i got two wizards, one's a very nice inn owner in the demiplane, other guy's the flying head
Im good
I meant the Demiplane one, though the flying head one would be a funny interaction
flying head's from before mystra put a limit on spells and has been in a rejuvenating sleep since before that, so he has no idea why all the mortals of the current era are "pitiful at magic"
that's also a banger idea
Mogget and the flying head would probably swap stories about “the good old days”
Also some convos like “ohhhh that volcanic apocalypse was you! So cool! I was the flood a couple centuries after”
"any mortal born after -332489256792 cannot cast spells... all they know is mcdragon's, charge they spell slots, perform, be bisexual, eat hot chip and lie"
“Hot chip? Ewwwwww! Fish are far superior”
(Mogget has been in a cat shape so long he is now obsessed with fish)
boomers
Hi! Does someone know how to start playing D&D i always thought it looked a bit interesting but never kenw how to start
At one point in the book series I took mogget from he was put into an magic sleep type thing (Im not going into specifics of the plot) and only woke up a few times a year, one of those times was when someone managed to catch a REALLY big salmon, he then woke up ate it then went back to sleep again.
this reminds me of a video i saw earlier, one guy throwing a MASSIVE fish next to a kitten
i just imagine your npc like that now
wizards born after the second sundering can’t cast spells. all they know is fireball, read scroll, get infected with a ball of netherese energy, use cantrip, and hide
Peak
Just buy some dice and join a dnd club
what is vtt
Vtt?
i meant online
also i live in australia so there's no clubs
EXACTLY
— Mystra
Virtual table top I think
You can play online too buy i think that its beter play V with frends on a real dnd tablet
you can check #find-a-game or the website roll20
all they know is arcane recovery they spell slots
check local university clubs and libraries, if there are no game stores
Sadly game stores don’t run dnd where I am 😔
it's still an anglophone country, so there are probably a decent number of dnd tables hosted around unless you live in the less populated areas
There are a lot of school dnd groups though
i know there are a bunch in melbourne, especially
free cosco membership? where
In MY DAY, we HAD no arcane recovery. We had to conserve our spell slots carefully. And we were GRATEFUL — Mystra (Midnight)
Whic is the best tipe of dwarf In your opinion
the one you have most fun playing
We DIDN'T NEED IT and we were FINE
I never had arcane recovery, and I turned out FINE!!!11
In my opinion mountain one
Just GIT GOOD all you ZOOMERS
Zoomer wizards 🙄
okay next time i make a pc i sorta want to play a boomer wizard
Wizoomers
well, not to the pre-sundering extent. or maybe yes, to that extent...
so a typical greybeard?
Is anyone up for discussion? How do you feel about homebrew weapon expansions ? Like Sabre, cestus, etc.
Back in my day we didnt have these fancy spell focuses
Ask the dm to let you use 2nd edition spells or smth
Play a super old elf wizard who just grouches about everyone else
We had to get the actual materials for our spells, you new gens have it too easy
naaah, those are nice grandpas in my experience
i'm talking truly insufferable old man who complains about the youth
Idk how well 2e spells fit into 5e
would this be fun for everyone else at the table?
(It would probably be with some balancing)
In my day, we didn’t have w a r l o c k s or s o r c e r e r s. Casting with rizz wasn’t a thing. Also, if you picked a school you were arbitrarily locked out of another school. And WE turned out FINE
i think yes, in my table we have characters who have beef and it's generally funny
Damn really the only way to get magic was learning it huh, no cheating
It would probably consist of saying “well back in my day” and “in the good old days” a lot, and that’s kinda fun ngl
back then they were just called "magic-user"
Is 3d printed miniature good to paint because online i saw videos of guys that say that is hard
it's part of the rp when the cleric finally has it and casts silence centered on greybeard
Yes!!! No “having inherent magic” or “tricking an Eldritch abomination into giving you powers”. Kids these days
Party of young adult adventurers and their geriatric wizard friend dave
grouchy characters work, if you make sure to include the table with the discussion and concept.
But THESE DAYS, any random can get magic just for being nice to a devil! It’s not FAIR!
it depends.
i can vouch for my table that we love exactly this sort of thing
Wath you mean?
it depends, on skill level, print quality, and patience
Probably depends on your 3d printer quality i imagine
Message me if you want to play right now. I will DM, it shall be peak fiction
Just wandering I'm new to this server. Is there a place where I can get four or five people to play with over voice chat.
im looking for a few players
Hey guys trying to post in find a DM but it brought me here and wont let me post looking for a DM 😅
I will DM right now
Thanks
can i join?
Add me, make a server I have 2 campaign options
Hii
Im looking to get a DM for a group of 5-6 😅 4 of the 5 are new to d&d so wanna do a one shot to see who will stay then invest into a longer campaign 🤷
when for your group? I'm off work today, I am down for that
I think when we were spit balling times Friday evenings would work best for the group as a whole but could look at moving/seeing what time works for everyone
I work from home so you can DM and we can discuss more 🤙
What is the best or your preferred way to manage character sheets? Fillable PDFs? Pen/Paper? Beyond?
I use Foundry so sheets are handled in it. Tho generally as a player if I can use Beyond I will
I like Beyond, it's a good assistant.
What ever your use too, I love old school pen and paper but dnd beyond makes it simple, I often still use both tbh 😅🤣
Play in person so i like my physical one
Beyond, but if I don't have access to something like paid content, I go with PDFs
I’m the DM and have found myself managing 3 of my players character sheets for them (newer players who enjoy playing, but don’t seem to care to spend time outside of the game). I’m trying to either make it easier for myself OR gearing up to offload that work onto them
Dm puts a lot of effort into the game, its not that much to ask players to do that tiny little bit of effort they need to put in themself
dnd beyond 100% it takes 2 seconds to set up for new players haha
The other reason I’m asking is for creating quick characters for one-shots and things like that. There aren’t a ton of pre-mades out there. I ran a level 3 one shot recently for 3 new players and had HOURS wrapped up in just creating the characters for it and them. Fastcharacter.com is great, but I’m not a fan of the layout.
But it's not a great teaching tool. It won't correct the things they do wrong, though it is a great assistant once you do know the rules.
Exactly why I’m asking. I’ve been hesitant to pay for the service or give them any money for digital. But just joined a campaign as a player where he has content sharing and it really is a very smooth and easy experience
Tbh, a player who will not learn their sheet is a player who is not long for my tables.
I would agree, but it’s my girlfriend, another very close friend, and his son. If they weren’t so close to me I wouldn’t be as forgiving. And they continue to play - 25 sessions into our campaign now
After 25 sessions id hope you know your character sheet
It’s not that they don’t know it…. but they don’t manage them - meaning level ups or any updating at all it’s on me to update the sheet and print off a fresh one
None of those 3 even know what it takes to create a character from the book
Aaah, thats like half the fun for me. But to each their own i guess
Haha, well I agree!
Tbh.
Your GF should put in the work.
"Hey [Insert nickname], this is important to me. I need you to learn this. If you want to continue to play."
So I guess I’m having all the fun… lol. But it can be a lot sometimes. Right now we’re good as the updates are small
But that one-shot recently… the time i invested for 3 meaningless level 3 characters was ridiculous. That’s on me though for trying to make everything too perfect
Can you get away with stealing characters from movies and games if you just gender bend the character?
It's DnD not Scythe or Gloomhaven.
It's not that complicated
Beyond is very confusing to me but that might be because I haven't played for long
dnd beyond is terrible for teaching folks the game imo
Yeah
Beyond 's character builder has not stood the test of time. And the Revision Launch didn't help
This is the sort of feedback I’m looking for. I can make sense of it, but I have a feeling these same 3 players might struggle
Yes, it's a good assistant once you know the rules, but it's a terrible teaching tool.
Exactly
agreed
Yeah it gave me a headache the first time I tried to use it, I use foundry now
I find it to be a great tool. But I know the rules. It's smooth and simple for people who already know the rules.
you don't have to do the paid version of dnd beyond. Using paper sheets makes it way more complicated. All they need is to pick a class a race and a name for their character and hop into a narrative. They don't need to learn the tiny details like ALL of their equipment gold and the backgrounds alignments and religions. Let them fall in love with the game first. THEN they will look into the more complex side of designing a character
dnd character sheets arent even that complicated
how does chasracter design work?
I just built my first character on there for a campaign I joined and I find it to be pretty awesome to have all of the information right there (how a spell works for example).
what do you use for it online?
I wonder how fun a champion dancer bard be
Also DndBeyond has in my experience encouraged the DM style of Everything Is Allowed All Of The Time
Which while fine is terrible for new DMs.
Well we are 25 sessions in. They seem to like the game and they already have characters with options the free version doesn’t offer
How exactly?
New DMs. Going hog wild on a system that they have not mastered yet is asking for confusion and complication.
There's a reason why the starter set doesn't come with every subclass option or species option.
It is much more beneficial for a dungeon master to learn the game at its core first and then start adding more options for them to keep track of.
Seems like a fairly mediocre combination, to me.
I guess in that case for all the additional options if you want those yeah. I have the homebrew thingy so when I DM I can add all the homebrew versions of stuff to have access to other content
I really have preferred physical books and physical sheets up to this point (we play in-person)
Just thought of making them a little more punchy
I have seen over the years plenty of dungeon Masters getting overwhelmed the point of nearly quitting the game because of all of the options they allowed. They were not more judicious in what was allowed and what wasn't.
should i use roll20 or beyond for character making?
My initial reaction to playing around on the Beyond platform after creating my character were positive - but I haven’t had a chance to use it in a game yet (session zero for that campaign is coming up - it’s an online game)
Beyond (imo) is better than Roll20
You can decided what allow or not when making the campaign, and it depends on what you really, so honestly I have to disagree with what you said
I personally prefer roll20 cause I can punch in text blocks manually
It's more modular but if you prefer to have the aid (and also have a tad bit of spare money laying around) then DND beyond is def better at that
anyone wanna join me and wrangler for a campaign rn??
We need at least 2 or 3 more people
My biggest dilemma to jumping into Beyond at this point is cost. I own the physical books, needing to nickel and dime for digital access doesn’t feel great
Question: What happens if a Werewolf bites a druid while the druid is in its Wild Shape?
At a guess, same thing that happens to everything else.
what kind of names should i use
Alternatively, druid in wildshape gets the poisoned condition. Drops wildshape? Still poisoned.
like greek?
DnD Beyond is great up to the point where you want to do anything the system doesn't have coded into its platform.
Not really
is milestone or xp better
Depends on the setting and your character. Absent further information, go with what you feel like.
This is something you would need to discuss with your DM and group.
oh
Dndbeyond is great for ease of set up tbh and frankly you are more likely use the base system of dnd than use things outside of it
If you're just jumping in and making a character on Beyond realize that this is a group activity and in an actual game you would be making your character with input form your group and DM. You can do it now, but it's just for practice.
And honestly if a new dm wanna use homebrew, well that’s on them not on dndbeyond
I love DDB for what it does do right. Been a legendary bundle holder since 2017. But the platform has it's fair share of issues.
I agree
Like not automatically adding bladesong ac buff to ac
Or atleast not having a setting similar to rage
I might be old fashioned but personally I much prefer making a paper character sheet at least at first. Online tools are limited by being online (DNDbeyond needing you to buy books online to add things for example). I like the freedom of a pen-and-paper sheet
Or when editing modifiers to reflect such not showing up on rolls
One of the problems that plagued the company when it was independent was they learned about a lot of the rules stuff when the public did. And so everything was ad hoc as quick as possible.
They've been owned by Wizards of the Coast now for almost 5 years. And that feeling really hasn't gone away.
I get that, but not everyone can do it in person and frankly you have the free books and you can homebrew some spells
Ad hoc?
To clarify, I mean that even if I were to play online I’d still make a paper character sheet at first
That’s just me though
WOTC also inherited a lot of tech debt that they just haven’t been able to fully fix. So instead of taking the time to fix the basic framework, they just sort of stack on temporary fixes. Which often times leads to further issues in the future.
Yeah am talking with my dm now thank yku
It’s like patching the hull of a ship with bandages and duct tape. It doesn’t fix the root problem.
Oh yeah and some of that tech debt was caused by learning about things late in development. Constantly attempting to announce new things only to put them in beta and alpha for eternity. Didn't help either.
Like Sigil
That was a completely separate tool
Fair
Because for some reason they felt the need to announce two separate vtts
Yep. Like when they introduced the Optional Class Features from TCOE. DDB wasn’t designed to support it, so they took a long time making it available.
And let's be honest, nobody could have foreseen that they would do a complete refresh of the system 10 years in
To the point where it was never available in UA, it only became available once TCOE officially dropped.
The late stage in which they learned information was the reason why they stopped doing UA in the first place. Because they would learn about a new UA drop when the public did
I think that’s also why they generally stopped supporting UA too. There were too many things to throw into the framework that potentially wouldn’t be published anyways.
I got to play as V1 today
One thing that I do miss about pre acquisition. The home page felt more like the home page of the D&D community than it does now.
Yeah I’m not a fan of the new UI
Now it's advertisements and product dives. Less articles about cool ideas, highlighting third-party content creators, celebrating the game in and of itself.
Don't get me started on the mess that is trying to learn about Official DnD play via AL. The fact that it's relegated to Discord, and a forum post is stunning.
Yeah it feels less community based now than it did before
what is SP and GP?
Silver piece and gold piece
silly points and goofy points /j
so i need to start Wretched?
the Lifestyle
If the WotC marketing team can hear me.
Plz Less Aabria Iyengar and Neil Newbon (Both are lovely) and more focus on the community itself with things like Highlighting content creators, or Small indie devs on DMsGUILD.
Gotcha. I honestly don’t recall what dictates what sort of “lifestyle” your character starts with. I think some 2014 backgrounds do, like Guild Artisan, but I could be wrong.
Couldnt you just choose?
Its just limited by starting gold because if you have only 10 copper, you cant have like most of them
Isn't it about money ?
Yeah the lifestyle. Is not necessarily a background tool but it's a on the average day. How much money does it cost for you to stay alive.
Yes but you can decide how much of your money you want to spend
Might just run out fast
And depending on how much you spend, is the quality of lifestyle that you have.
Yup
Very handy for things like downtime where you'll give out 10 days and before you do any stuff in downtime you have to spend your lifestyle money.
I mean...maybe the character makes bad financial decisions
I dont see why this would be predetermined
I just put "Moderate" Every time I make a character
Its player choice
"Ok jeff how much money do you live off daily this week?"
"Noble"
"Well you dont have enough so that will only last 2 days"
Don't pick any staring gear just to have money for better lifestyle
Today Jeff has Ice Soup for breakfast
Yeah so in theory you could live a Wretched lifestyle today and an Aristocratic one tomorrow based off how much money you’re willing to spend
Best possible lifestyle is a consequence of starting money, but you can always go for a worse one
And if you start in a quest already, you might have enough gold by end of day to afford noble
Today's quest: Find a job
You know?
I forget to spend money with lots of my characters, most of the time it's because they just don't really need to buy anything because I'm typically chill with the equipment I start out with lol
Hi I am looking for people to play with between 5-9 GMT over voice chat or video and I was wondering if anyone would want to DM me and play. I would be looking for about 4-6 people to play with. Btw I'm new ish but I have played a bit
If you wanna find a DM too go use #looking-for-dm
Hell, My Tortle Cleric can't wear armor, he already wields a shield and doesn't really use weapons, what would he need?
You get magic items while adventuring
Does his shell count as armor
Buy shell decorations
Yes, Tortles have an Unarmored Defense of 17 at Base
Lmao, just the pink fuzzy Dice
would a Rogue make a good gunslinger?
Get a paint and paint your armor/house a new colour every week
His Shield gets him up to 19 AC and he's got Magic Initiate (Wizard) from the Sage background and the shield spell lol
(He also got Shocking Grasp and Ray of Frost as some decent attack cantrips from it too)
Depends
I guess if you think about sneak attack as QuickDraw
I never really got the idea of a gun user rogue, even with a silencer, a gun still makes a lot of noise
Honestly, I think your best bet is Fighter or Ranger ....
Or, Awesome alternative, A Warlock invested in Pact of the Blade
I want them to be aware of my presence.
Then why play a Rogue?
the agility
Play a Monk with a gun instead
One high damage shot kind of works for a sniper type
Even in gunslinger setting I played Rouge as William Knifeman
But yeah lifestyle is meant to be a hole in the bottom of your character's gold bag.
my character's not religious
Monks aren't religious in D&D
Not all the time
Atheist Monk
They just train to hone their bodies and minds
No character is forced to have religion in dnd. Though there are many compelling stories with religion
Even Clerics don't have to be "religious" or follow a God
what about Fighter?
Fighter is a good option for a Gunslinger
Probably the best martial option besides like.. maybe Ranger?
But the Archery Fighting style works with guns
And it's worth noting that in many of the D&D settings, being an atheist is equivalent to being of flat earther. You don't have to have belief that they are worthy of worship. But denying their existence in many D&D settings. Is dumb.
Yes I am also aware that Eberron is an exception to this.
what is Eberron
A setting
Steampunk fantasy setting for DnD
would magipunk be a better word for Eberronn?
I'd say less "Steampunk" and mire "Magipunk" as all technology in Eberron is powered by magic
Oh...Steamonk character
I only use the word that the Wizards of the Coast design team have used.
whats the difference between acrobatics and athletics
The difference between a football player and a gymnast
cool
this is why I feel like non god aligned clerics don’t really make sense in most settings aside from eberron
Funny analogy considering their world is flat from our perspective (mostly)
what is vex
like a curse?
anyone down to play a campaign right now? I will be DM. Peak fiction promised lol
And of course people will confound that religions in D&D have to be similar to religions in real life and they don't.
Many people in settings like the Forgotten Realms Revere the gods. Most don't pick one. They worship them all. Even the evil ones. And worship is very transactional
Mastery property.
I think Vex is that if you hit enemy with an attack, next attack within the same round is done with advantage, but I don't remember all masteries yet.
This is very true and a common mistake I see newer players making especially with Forgotten Realms. The gods in that setting arent like modern monotheistic religions. They’re a lot more like the gods in, say, the Ancient Greek pantheon. They’re worshipped and respected but they’re not role models or “good guys”.
At least in the forgotten realms. Knowledge that the world is spherical is decently common knowledge
You can make up any God you want can't you ? Since all that matters is if there's enough beings with souls that believe in that God.
And when it comes to flat world, at least here in our real world, we have known that the world is a globe for far more than 500 years.
Depends upon the species and the setting
The Ancient Greeks knew that the earth was a globe. It’s possible earlier societies knew as well
Characters are free to believe what they like.
Kuo toa are like the "this rock is god now" species right ?
I'm wondering if anyone would want to join me and two other people in a campaign
According to D&D yes. A Cleric can't just make up a god, and expect to be able use any abilities or spells that specifically request a god or pantheon's help.
I'm having hard time getting in to role of believer so it wouldn't seem like I'm playing joke character. One day I would want to play Cleric...one day or night
Its not believer
Yes lol
Its fantasy. Theyre real
You have to roleplay that
You dont have to roleplay a blind faith character in dnd because in dnd faith isnt blind
Yep
You back a sports team? Have a favourite celebrity? Favourite TV show?
Think of it like that. Religion is fandom with a songbook (in the sense of how to apply it in a roleplaying game about elves and dwarves etc).
You can but dont have to. Id say its actually kinda weird in a world of magic to not have seen "proof" of your deity yet
Hi guys, I was near a few months ago then I forgot all about it. I think these are new people or you guys are new people or maybe I’m just in a different server but nice to meet you guys all.
It's very much. "Hey Umberlee. Here is a sacrifice and ten gold to your clergy. Don't sink my ship."
How would cleric behave ? Like do you spread your word everywhere you go or do you just live by some ideology ?
Both is possible
Exactly, that’s why I love playing cleric so much. You can do so much roleplaying wise with their god and how their faith manifests
You could be on a holy mission to stop something or you could just be a cleric on the side and the campaign story is actually so important it dragged you from regular duties
No need to soft sell your idea, I think it has merit.
what is an Acolyte?
Buddy, you got to use Google a little bit
A religiously initiated person
-# Points up at the office with a solemn look
you dont need to answer them (the questions) im asking whoever will answer
A novice. Initiate. Beginner
Check out the free rule book that is available to read for free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Or check out the very helpful people in #dnd-newcomers
So you could also be sorta secret cleric ? Like you have God, but you don't speak of it because you may consider general people undeserving. Specifically like some God tied to knowledge or something ?
Yes
And one thing about faith in Dungeons and Dragons is that very rarely is one religion evangelizing that their faith is the one true faith. A cleric of Ilmater is not going to typically dissuade you from following Torm, or Selûne.
So they don't compete as The one, more like "Your gods values suck" ?
Most ppl worship more than 1
Yeah and “good” clerics generally speaking get along well with other good clerics
Also if every religion in dnd tried forbidding the worship of others, it would be… absolute chaos
Clerics i think just generally feel very very aligned with one but they wont spit on the rest usually
There are a few occasions when that has occurred. Cryic the Lord of Lies has called himself the One True God.
And there was that embarrassing moment when Lathander tried to remake the gods in his image. Both failed.
Isn't something that would Sharrans do ?
I can imagine some of the lesser or middle deities stepping in themselves
Shar is evil
what does UA stand for again ?
Evil religions are a lot more dismissive of others
Think it's more "make respectful observance towards as appropriate," if you ask me. The Umberlee example, for instance.
Eh, a lot of the time it’s just a few crazy gods trying that
Shar Does not necessarily deny that the other gods exist
Umberlee is a special case
Shouldn't she want them to be forgotten since that's like the end for them and like her theme ?
Yeah but Shar is evil and doesn’t get along with most of the other gods
But worship also doesnt mean dedicate yourself to the deity
I mean that sounds like correct thing to be done by God of lies... lying.
Or the... what's the one about song and dance and life? I bet folk all turn out for her parties with a little offering of some kind.
Its just a bit of "oh youre good and i hope you help us"
Shar is Loss.
It would be very appropriate for someone who lost someone like a child turn to her to find comfort in that loss.
Is Selune goddess of gain then ?
hey guys what would be some good thematic adds for a Jabberwock fight?
"Lady Shar, take from me this love that has become a burden on my days."
She’s the goddess of the moon and navigation/travel
Moonlight. Stars and Navigation
I don't know if that is true. That might be true in your campaigns. Clerics are definitely the proselytizers in D&D, whether as a PC or NPC is player or DM's call. If you have a temple for a god, you don't just build one for you only.
People turning to shar just need a live Laugh Love doormat
"Finding your path"
Shar is the goddess of taking Ls
So is there a god of gain or something close to that ?
In context?
Gain is too general. Gain what
Money, Gains (muscles), generally good fortune at trading I guess so God of Trading
No
Hold up, I heard that name in BG3
Yeah kinda, but there are also definitely allied pantheons and religions who wouldn't really poach each other's followers.
Waukeen’s Rest?
Yes, BG3 is set in Faerun, one of the D&D worlds.
Yeah, so I would assume it to be some trading outpost
That's cuz it was. It was a rest stop for merchants
That...makes a ton of sense. I have it connected in my mind with lightning staff reward only
HAHAHAHA SAME
that thing goes so hard when you dupe, dual-wield and then use it with spike growth
Umberlee is the temple in the pott of bsldurs gate
Ilmater is the cloister outside the city
Most important gods are in bg3 tbh
I think certain gods also have stronger presences in certain cities
no bahamut my beloved
There are more though. Far more
Guess if I played Cleric, I would want to play Church of Broken God aka Adeptus Mechanicus. Believers want to achieve eternal life by becoming full constructs eventually.
Bahamut is there!!
Broken god is ilmater
He’s choosable as a patron deity
There are over 29 pantheons just in Forgotten Realms.
Its not at all mechsnicus
not what i meant
(I also love Bahamut and Tiamat)
My love for the FF bahamut transferred here
Ilmater the broken god is very strong with christian vibes tbh. Hes kinda jesusish
But different enough to be seperate
Damn, I guess he doesn't allow his followers to attain eternal life by becoming constructs ?
Not sure
probably doesn't have a stance on it, but you could homebrew smth
Ilmater is also the god with the most named saints in the realms.
Funny though i have a broken mother in my game which is mechanicus
The broken god, the crying man, and the Lord on the Rack
Because it wouldn't be that hard to do right? Like if you add little bit of Artificing to Cleric and you would get someone believing in Machine God and trying to become machine themselves.
Him and loviatar are just best buddies
Loviatar is hilarious
What do boobs have to do with being a god ?
Most artificers would worship Gond. Lord of the Craft.
Its a medieval torture device
NOT that sort of rack
lmaoooo
Ooooooooooooh, that makes more sense
omg
Rack is any construction built to hold something, like torturees, a sword and armour or tanning hides
So he's like also patron of the tortured? Physically and mentally?
Ilmater? No
He is endurance through hardship
Hes kinda the god of compassion, endurance yeah
Hello everyone, my name is Lughaidh (Lou-ee). I am new to dungeons and dragons and I am looking for a cool group of people to play with. Where can I find one of those?
Wouldn't that be tied to crafting rather than becoming machine yourself?
Welcome to the hobby!
Check out #find-a-game or the website roll20
Thank you so much!
The application of creating a war forged kind of individual. Doesn't really exist in the Realms. However, when asked for suggestions on how to play one in the Realms. The Gondian Artificers of Lantan were cited.
Hello
I imagine it more like. You willingly give up your fleshy arm away so you can replace it with magical prosthesis because your goal is to eventually be Adam Smasher
Looking for honest feedback on LegendaryTabletop.com devices. They look pretty cool, but I don't know if they work with the DnDBeyond VTT. In fact, I'm a noob at the whole VTT thing. Before I go plunking down $3000 on a LegendaryTabletop, I want to know that it'll work with this system.
Feels sus
Didn't sigil get shut down?
Sigil is closing in like six months
Rahhh I’m so excited I’m gonna play my 2nd session ever this weekend w my friends 😼😼
Nice
While prosthetic limbs do exist in the Realms and other settings. They're not necessarily common to the point of doing it out of desire rather than necessity.
It is very exciting to begin dnd and having the first sessions! Though the first campaign I was ever in was kinda a flop it was still learning experience
I'm a noob. I don't know anything about Sigil or getting shut down. Looking for a solution where I have a portable 43" or larger touch screen TV with all the fog of war, figurine placement and detection, playability with all the adventures I buy here, etc.
Sigil was D&D’s official VTT that was expensive and difficult to use
Also limiting too.
What if you would search for the technology? Kinda like forge domain, but instead of focusing on armors and weapons and mines, you focus on ways of creating constructs and eventually how to convert yourself in to construct. So...Construct Domain so to speak
Sadly it will be. Probably the only thing, besides the character sheet that made it worthwhile to visit the site
Such a god does not exist in the Forgotten Realms to my knowledge. Nor and in the other setting. At that point you might want to be looking at individuals like Primus. Lord of the Modrons. Or creating your own
would the equipment section of the fortgtten realm hero book having them listed as for free not imply some level of common placeness?
Sounds like Mechanus
just wondering not sure who common , common magic item is meant to be
I mean, I could, but would it make sense ? Do you think there's enough beings that would want to achieve eternal life by becoming construct. Enough beings that believe metal is stronger than flesh.
They are common enough to be available. Nothing says they are common enough where the public at large are cyberpunking themselves. And the new books focus heavily on Calimshan. Which features magitek heavily. That wouldn't necessarily be the case in Rashemen or Uthner or Dambrath.
Like how prosthetics are today is a good way to look at it. They are available should you need them. But people aren't going around chopping their hands off to get one.
Do you know if the Legendary Tabletop can be used with any VTT?
I could see a very competent artificer looking at it as an option, and his friends looking at him like he's nuts
Isn't that because they aren't as good yet ? Since eventually when prosthetics get advanced enough you basically get Cyberpunk.
I'm considering about making Cleric, but this sounds more like possible homebrew Artificer subclass.
I see exoskeleton stuff as being much more likely than replacement limbs
Wouldn't that be just Armorer Artificer? I went for cleric first because this is not just about the technology, but the belief that making yourself construct is da wae
Why not just be a war forged with a human soul?
That's kinda like the goal, but you won't start a new game with final boss fight won't you ? Becoming Warforged-like is the goal, but the path to it that's the fun
In DnD a Prosthetic Limbs is a magic item that has 100% the same functionality as a regular limb.
The only detector is he wouldn't work in an anti-magic field. But most people don't want me to those in their day-to-day basis
I'd be more interested in trying to maintain humanity while being perceived as a machine
Thats cool
It echoes cyber psychosis from cyberpunk
I have never played cyberpunk so I have no clue what that entails
You basically plugged one too many Christmas lights in to your brain and now you see Grinches everywhere
You stop feeling like a person
That is very cool. In a current campaign I am in I am playing a warforged (homebrewed a little ye, the entire campaign is) it is very fun to play warforgeds
My most played is probably Human fighter. Peak fantasy
I keep playing (draconic race) (full caster)
I wouldnt go cyberpsycho
John D. Baldur standing next to Wizard that can drop meteorites on snap of their fingers
I normally just play Dragonborn (specifically WHITE, for some reason) and fighter as I love dragons but because of my warforged character I love warforgeds now
I've played a Warforged once.
An Armorer Artificer named Vanguard
Highelf is the best race
I love yapping about my warforged character
I can't imagine why my message was blocked but I'll rephrase I guess; "I like Tieflings."
I can favor gameplay over rp when it comes to class, but not when it comes to race
You misspelled half-elf. They combine two best races in to one.
My Warforged fella was an absolute unit, he was the parties main Frontliner. Their... dare I say.. Vanguard!
He loved throwing hands as much as he loved solving complex runic equations
pointy humans
Hey guys
Discombobulate
Can someone teach me?
My warforged has a long history of backstory that even if I try to summarize it I would not be able to because I want to say all the details
I wonder if Half-Tiefling could exist and how many traits would they retain visually
Just a tiefling
Not all tieflings have equal intensity in their infernal features
Thats also why dnd removed halforcs and halfelves
His first combat was against a snow tiger.
The party was being chased on sleds, everyone was panicking because they didn't know what to do, Vanguard backflips off a sled does a superhero-esque landing and punches the tiger straight in the face lmao
You just pick one fullrace and flavour them as less or more x or y
Albino Tiefling without tail and only single horn...and maybe a one hoof
That’s cool! I should mention my warforged name is Blood Clott, the name has a reason if you want me to tell you. The first combat he had to experience was- I don’t remember their names but those creatures that have a chicken and snake combined body
But their milk tastes after cinnamon or some shit the creator said
My Tiefling had Goat-like eyes, Ram horns and Cloven hooves, his skin was as blue as a strangled corpse though lol
My tiefling could almost pass for regular human, but had shark-like features that gave her away.
I also have a goat-like tiefling lol. I love how much freedom there is with designing them
The marbling is deep
That’s so cool and pretty sounding!
Was she Wereshark?
Vanguard is named Vanguard because he was always the first and Frontliner into the fray
No.
Blood Clott was named Blood Clott because they collected blood from willing patients that would donate their monthly blood to get rid of it to feed vampire spawns and Blood Clott (Clott used blood as fuel to keep working)
He was also very heavily armored
A Stone fella wearing full-plate, well, the Full Plate was augmented into his body, but yeah
I have a half-dragon with legolas-esque hair from his elven half
Nice
otherwise he's a scalie
Dragons are cool
so true, spit your fax lesbian vampire
To which side does he tip ?
i'd say 90% dragon 10% elven in appearance, but he's short and a bit wimpy due to birth defects
if there's an art channel my paladin drew him
I'm not a big dragon person, but my favorite Dragons are Copper Dragons for the Metallics and Black for the Chromatics... I guess my favorite Gen dragon would be Topaz? Lol
Yass
I really like White dragonborns, no clue why I have just always ended up playing a white Dragonborn. I think I have managed to play 3 just white dragonborns and two of which are fighters
I can kinda imagine it
Imagine saying dragons are cool in a dnd server. smh my head.
