If I just reincarnated would I lose elven accuracy 2024
-# I gotta ask tho, is there a need to optimise here?
true, if the system were completely 5%, so if you throw 100 times 5 will be nat20, but unless the page you are using have that kind of system. There is a bit too much random in your chances
I was urged not to talk about my party at all
In 5e it’s very specific you can’t
Does that…mean you should optimise?
But 5.5e it’s very vague only talks about taking the feat
I feel the folks in #dnd-rules would be able to answer that
Was trying to ask before exactly how useful were the kits and what uses they could have outside of the ordinary, i.e. thieves kit to pick a lock
Yeah some of them are kinda niche/not too helpful
Some are pretty neat tho
-# wait but what does that have to do with optimising?
Just asking if there’s really a need to optimise your build in a group of newbies
what should i do for my 2014 swords bard satyr rapier guy?
You should give him a liking for dad jokes
He went down the rabbit hole of wanting to hard carry his team and would monologue about his grand plans so rather than convincing him out of it, may as well refer him to a guide
Trying to hard carry a team almost never ends well in my experience
If i get polymorphed as an aasimar that is currently affected by inner radiance, does the radiance end?
(currently in game)
would appreciate a quick response, if possible.
It would never end well yes but its also too much effort to convince him out of it
Think of the endless complaints about his party having constant nat 20s but playing like toddlers
Gotta be golden and glorious.
If you aren't reveling in it all, partying with abandon, what's the point anyway/
Every moment is a riot /satyr
This is normal 5e? Isn't Satyr broken in that ed?
I remember reading that once upon a time on dndbeyond pre-WotC.
not sure? They get advantage on saves for spells
hmm lemme see
+2 Charisma, +1 Dexterity
35 ft spd
Can ram with your head (lol typo) for 1d4+ STR modifier
Magic Resistance
Mirthful Leaps (long or high jump, d8 roll, add the number of feet to distance covered)
Yeah that's pretty good X)
free +3 stats
plus MR, plus headbutts, plus jumping
It's going to be a rapier based swords bard
Nonetheless, as a racial, imba.
I sit where I stand on that, and remembered the right of it. : D
Wow thats incredibly busted
Yeah. Broken. Where's the QA?
Yeah. If it shows up in anything I DM, I'm going to negate the MR and just let the Satyr jump more.
For now, it's mostly trying to get some better equipment. And they're not total newbies, more akin to "first time trying this sort of class"
Anyways, would something like a Smith or Tinkerer kit do well at repairing and especially upgrading weapons and armor
still, would give him the chance of get some special item like horseshoes that give X effect.
Repairing? I’d definitely rule so.
Upgrading is a bit iffier
Well sure. That can happen with a particular boon for any race / background whatever.
But beside that, yeah, the MR is too much. Add more jump//speed or just upgrade the ram to a 1d6
idk how would work that ram tho, bonus action? can take it if Movement were made? etc. etc.
Agree. +3 free stats is already a lot. I forget all the CHA based classes, but like, Paladin, Warlock, Bard...that +2 CHA makes Satyr with MR busted for so many things.
In terms of the bard stuff like spells what should i do
i want a good amount of support
Haste is nice
Haste, need you to be backline but you can give a lot of stuff to a fighter//paladin//monk//ranger//barbarian
Any spell that heal is welcome honestly.
Identify need a 100gp pearl but can help in a lot of situations
Silvery barbs yes or yes.
What's the spell that prevents fear? Calm Emotions?
Another good one to have precast
i know i'll have a paladin and an artificer in the party
Zone of truth or Silence are spells that help in lots of situations
still, +2 ac, extra attack, movement. Haste is too good but dont break that concentration or that ally will be wrapped up like a gift.
Might as well have magic missile for the scaling, targeting, and something to vomit onto injured mobs
Anything to help in interactions too, think that you might be the best option for negotiations, talkings, etc.
Enhance ability maybe
Don't bards just inspire whenever they want for basically all passive checks, almost inexhaustibly per day?
Yep, can use it against enemies raging, fearing, etc. etc.
Heat metal can be really good support if used creatively
already using concentration for haste
Remember for ermmm.... Rayquaza love the concentration in spells.
Fair... oh wait this is all at once?
Or to punish the abrupt murder hobo in your group.
"Uh. No."
kinda, i wont recommend having more than 2 conc spells in the list
Nvm, 60% of bard list is concentration.
Heat Metal on the gold in the hobo's pocket
I mean it depends in what level but like concentration is fun
Heat Metal on just the lower portion of his Scale Mail.
Yep, but sadly you can only have 1 conc. Unless homebrew rules of having more than one.
oh yea Rangers also have this problem, i haven't actually measured it but i'd estimate a good like 70% of their combat-oriented spells need Concentration
What a hot day, isn't it?
Fair but I love managing concentration, trying to find what works best for the situation, others may disagree but thats my take! :)
some are understandable, they dont have too much list so the idea must be having one active on them and upgrade the attacks
Now that you mention it, it is weird that all the Ranger spells I packed are practically concentration
Rangers to me are Masters of None. Such a funny, gimmicky class.
Outside of Rope Trick
Sadly hunters mark and zephyr strike are conc....
Rangers are basically an RP class
Yeah. Perhaps it's time Boo's daughter, Yinsc, the unknown Rashemen trainee, entered the chat.
"I am half woman and half giant miniature space hamster. Die."
i kinda like the idea, i had played one session like a ranger hunter sniper.
Each bullet was lethal and almost took down a boss alone
I mean there's nothing wrong with that.
The class was literally made because someone wanted to RP Aragorn
i mean it'd be cool if Ranger's gimmick was that they can have multiple spells on their Concentration, but they just like, don't get to do that
the dm already said that boss might come back later so i know i will have a nemesis chasing me and i am mentally ready for it.
Wasn't aware lol.
That title goes to rogues
So it's been floating in limbo ever since?
"We uh, don't really know what to do with this. So here's some stuff...."
I guess so
as of right now Rangers are basically if Eldritch Knight used the Druid list instead of Wizards
The classes are not balanced whatsoever
I mean there's not just roleplay thats outta combat and thats where rogues and rangers shine
Except Rogues do everything Rangers do 100x better no?
Yeah and the whole... Enemy and explorer....its kinda wasted honestly
No its the other way around
Ranger does everything Rogues do but better if Ranger packs a feat
yea, Rangers try to be so many somebody else's thing that they aren't anything of their own
Or I guess the better way to describe it is, Bard does everything Rogues do but better
Right. Wannabes.
Which is unfortunate. They deserve to feel distinct, powerful, and interesting.
Oh goodness this is hard, no one told me picking magical armor was this hard for Ranger
I'm grateful for the nuanced response.
It's pretty hard to do that without the paladin effect
I can either make Gloom Stalker Ranger deceptively tanky or make it a glass cannon, what to do
Would just make a ranger good for all the terrains with the "Natural Explorer" and have a lil advantage in all the "Favored Enemy"
I wouldn't do all but maybe 2-3
Still never sneaking, stealing, or assassinating as well as a rogue.
What I think shines about ranger is not their combat ability but their ability in like survival campaigns or those that are very explorative
Except trying to rp survival campaigns is v boring
Better damage, has good spells, better at stealth because of PWT, can be great at out of combat healing with lifeberry
meh, for me is another kind of thing.
A ranger must be able to make the nature his terrain of playing, like the rogue can make the cities and towns his playground
The ranger must make the whole nature his playground
Better damage? Uh.
Too each their own.
Definitely better damage, Rogues don't have extra attack
Actually rangers don’t do half bad damage for a lot of the campaign
That presupposes level 5-6 can't remember
You have to Sneak Attack every turn to be on par with extra attack
Plus, if they do use their spell slots their damage increases even more
Oh yeah in T1 campaigns Rogues are much better
gtg
I think it comes to the facts that just not all classes are combat focused
Either way, I like Rangers. They are great flavor. But they are a gimmick.
Exactly!
Rangers are just too niche
I think they're just fine as a martial
They're the best weapon user in the game, and a good 6th member in a high op party
Better than actual martials
(2 wiz, 2 lock, 1 druidlock, ranger)
well, i can use that session i had being a ranger. I did all i can to make my character able to do lots of damage with 1 shot
Might ask if the dm let me instead of an extra attack get X extra dice of damage.
But each shot of mines were a kill and if not, left them crippled.
While the party... welp, they were trying
There's a good ranger rework that gets rid of spells for trickshots
Idk about a good 6th member, high op parties would just go full wizards and warlocks
Ranger hate in 2025 lmao
It's not hate
You have not experienced the art that is Gloom Stalker
Gloom stalker is peak!
Fav ranger subclass
Then swarmkeeper
Looking at ribbon features like favoured enemy and thinking ranger sucks is missing the forest for the trees
Gloomstalker is enjoyable, yea, but we've been hardstuck in the Gloomstalker meta for a bit now
Good
I just like the thematics of the subclass
Gloom Stalker supremacy
Favourable enemy i think is pretty flawed as it's entirely dependent on the DM how well that works
Oh, I wanted to ask something about me as a person
Is it a good idea to make small suggestions to the party about ways to solve problems?
Loose example: advising Fighter to help a blacksmith with work and errands to get better deals on weapons or upgrading his armor to +1
Are you the dm
That would be interesting given Bards were created as a hybrid of Fighter, Druid and Thief (there was no Bard back then)
Suggestions are fine yeah. It’s a collaborative game.
I'd send a dpr comparison graph if the channel allows images
Though it is up to the other party on whether or not to follow your suggestion.
I'd be careful about it as the DM but as a player you can definitely suggest it in game
If you're not the dm then don't say you may get +1 to stuff but if dm, giving players some options to start out with can be good!
Wanted to ask because I was seeing yesterday on how badly I was screwing up with optimization. I still want to make suggestions as a way to help my other party members solve problems, but I'm worried that I might be unintentionally pushing it
But the conclusion is that assassins barely outpace gloomstalker at level 1-3, then the difference spikes at level 5, maintaining a gap of about 50 dpr throughout the rest of the levels
Just don’t push it, friendly suggestions are in the spirit of the game
Agree
Swarmkeeper's a good sub too, they get Web
“So, my dear fighter friend. What do you say we burn some time at this kinda smith? Hone our skills, and maybe you might even get an upgrade! What do you say?”
Well, I'm not going to give it to them myself, I'm not the dm. My party is pretty well equipped for things like proficiencies, but could be used to their advantage. Let's just say that buying 1.5k gp plate armor is a time and place (level 4 and with a party budget of about 4k is not it)
Well yeah then use roleplay to be like (dang, we don't have the budget, maybe you can make a deal with a blacksmith?" And go from there
With that budget you might be able to acquire a musket eventually
For example, I myself was going to look for an archery contest and either win some prizes. Or at least, get some good rp in at the cost of some rolls or arrows
Mhm!
can i show you my character sheet a little bit?
Well, yeah. Muskets are 500 gp and it's a good chance to use the kits and slowly improvise my way into it being a late game hunting rifle
sadistic DMs would say otherwise
You might be able to craft some ammo with the help of an NPC or party member too
The only issue would be Loading
I guess that is the kind of optimization I want the most. Not feats, weapons, or playstyles as much as clever problem solving and looking out for the team while also improving yourself too
Gunner perk
Yeah if you see that consider getting gunner early
is gunner unofficial subclass?
Gunslinger is yeah
I spend far too much time thinking about the logistics of a world with magic and monsters
Gunner is a feat
Gunslinger, yeah. But gunner is a feat
Eh depends on the player
Great minds think alike
It might be best at level 6, if this next town gets me the musket. I can use my longbow until then
You can use both in specific circumstances
Everything is cool if the right people are there who enjoy it. Play ranger if you want, play different characters, play with weird homebrew, or none at all. Play survival or sci-fi or whatever. That's the best part of dnd!
my party was holed up in a basement, hiding from the feds while we wait for a smuggler, and i had to talk down our Fighter from blasting the guy at the top of the stairs because
A) if he's right and it is a cop, where are the feds gonna look when their guy that they sent here to investigate suspicious activity doesn't come back?
B) if he's wrong, what are we gonna do when the guy letting us stay here is pissed because we killed his friend that smuggled goods for him?
How can things like ogres and giants and dragons AND human(oids) continue to coexist
I played in a survival campaign and it was fun! That's my style and it can be someone else's for a different reason and not someone else's for their own reason
Shoot the musket with your longbow on the floor, then drop the musket and pick up the longbow.
For the rest of combat (after your first turn) use your musket
I could technically, but extra attack at level 5 plus holstering and readying a weapon counts as an action. So by then, it's probably best to just stick with the longbow and keep the musket for when I can swap
Magic and skill idk pure luck
Ok then how did one side not wipe out the other
Oh yeah by the time you reach extra attack the strategy goes out the window
As you said, stick with the longbow for that period
Which is the next level. We're at level 4 now
Oh yeah
I kept thinking yall were stilll lvl 3
You would think an organized civilization of humans with the power to do it would work together to wipe out a dangerous threat to them
Luck and fantasy world
Yes
Now my worlds have answers for this
Humans are far too petty for that kind of organization. They're too busy with internal squabbles over power.
No
Even irl humans worked together multiple times to wipe out tons of competing megafauna
Depends on the world
And that was WITHOUT magic
We leveled up this session and I took Alert
The funny thing was this session, I went before our Wizard and Druid despite both getting nat 20s
My worlds has reasons as do others and others may not thats the fun of dnd!
I saw
In my head the canon that the humans in any fantasy are the most Cruel if its needed the situation is there.
Other factions would care for a honorable death, having less casualties possible, loose less resources.
Humans dont, if for the humans they need to be the most cruel, insane and emotionless creature, for survive. They would
But still they would give first a chance of talk, get in a middle ground or at least solve it with words instead of weapons.
It's just a world building problem i see in most fantasy
Humans win because we are the most intelligent
In the world I built, I asked... what would these races be like if they didn't have to compete for resources? Maybe orcs, goblins, and kobolds wouldn't be so into eating people if there were easier things to catch and eat and if they weren't always being displaced by other races.
I may have to come to terms with that. But I made that suggestion to them and said more or less "Hey. This is a good chance for roleplay. Worst case scenario, we learn more about your character with a chance of side rewards"
If they take that advice is up to them. I know I will
I don’t care about the official numbers, off the top of your head, what is the average height range for dwarves in D&D?
4' - 4'6"
Good middle ground
120cm, or smt like that
4'8 max
The kind of creature that would be the kindest, help more people and try to do the things right.
Unless someone push enough to find out why others races choose to have peace with them.
Again, Cruelty, the most unhinged strategies and more.
make the phrase "you dont know the violence that took me for being this kind" a whole race
i mean i'd say bottom of the range is like 3'5" and top is 5'0"?
These numbers are all much smaller than mine. interesting.
It's not even cruelty it's ingenuity
I think we as humans overestimate ourselves
We are at the top of the food chain and it's not even remotely close
I think it's vastly underestimating humanity in general
Welp, if we considerate that in moments of irl story, we threw bodies with the plague on it to castles
Put poison in lots of rivers that provided water to cities
Put in stakes people just to scare them
Even use skulls and other strategies for intimidation of the enemy.
Etc. etc.
I wouldn't use that to represent the entirety of humanity
Think of it but x10 in a fantasy world. We are kind too
Ok but other humanoids species in dnd are just as smart and also we aren't in dnd thats for sure
Well, the tallest dwarves should be like average human I think, like 4’11 to 5’7 seems about right for dwarves and male humans are like 5’6 to 6’2 typically with exceptions both directions
This is a fantasy genre, though. I had to chase down someone carry 120 pounds worth of gear who was sprinting at over 25 feet/sec for almost half a minute
And the problem is we couldn't coexist with them one side would have to go
Ok?
Humans can do some crazy crap when they out their minds to it. Doesn't mean they all can or will
Same goes for other fantasy races
Think about it though other humanoids species just as smart along with dragons and other stuff. Angry gods affecting us. Tbf our intelligence is also our greatest downfall
How do we tell him
Dwarves live for like 200 years don’t they? And like, in the culture there are few things they respect more than a hard days work, they are like Vikings that like to dig and are kinda short and live for a long time
The only reason they're not is because we deliberately stopped killing them
Grizzly bears for example used to live all over North America and within 100 years they were almost entirely hunted out of the US
Simply because of how dangerous they were
And that's... bad?
No
They're not extinct but when another species is competing with humans they don't last
I mean kinda... but thats getting too deep into banned topics for this server
Right this is getting off topic
I just think in that way for humans, they would be the peak in terms of wars and more.
While other races have their ways, humans would adapt and be more smart in it.
Make the war their best thing
I'm not saying that I'm saying that coexistence is what's hard to believe
That's just how life works, I guess. I can get behind this. We aren't omnipotent, but often underestimated
If a dragon is eating people attacking towns etc yeah that's coexisting
Should I get the players handbook and monster manual? Right now I only got the dm guide
With that said, the silver lining about someone else trying to get plate armor at level 4 made me realize something for myself: trying to get generally late game stuff this early is not the best idea
Hunting rifle can wait, but a musket to improve into a hunting rifle is much better
A more affordable option would be the heavy crossbow
Longbow, heavy crossbow, musket, hunting rifle
But tbh musket is cooler
That is another one, but a musket is more my style
That, plus I prefer guns to crossbows
Yeeeeeee
Yeah, I got hooked on the Paciencia when I played Fallout: New Vegas
does anybody spawn with the HCB? it's always been a comical weapon to me because it's Ranged with a Push Mastery
How do I make a thing in looking for players? 2 peeps pretty much dipped in a campaign I'm in and we're looking for 2 to replace them.
Type /looking-for players
The DnD equivalent of seeing the rule of "make a con save on a hit higher than twice the max hp or die instantly on a fail" then going "Alright bet" and using a weapon to kill grunts 200 times over
more if you have any artificer or Crossbow expert feat. For the reload thingy
This server is big, really big I just noticed, might leave cause anxious and maybe just find players else where
Bro... isnt that serious
It’s fineeee
I recently found two good players here. We're having our second session with them tomorrow.
Mb for being extremely anxious? I just have really bad social anxiety disorder
Oh good to know!
Granted, I was looking for niche players, so I only had about 8 people contact me...
How long did that take?
A day?
Damn...
Be picky in your post.
Yeah wish I could go back and edit it. I made it in a rush
3.5e games are hard to find, so I can usually find interested folks quickly, but they're not all quality folks. I'm really pleased with the two I found from here, though.
Oh you do 3.5e neat!
Good point, at the same time i dont read minds. Still relax, isnt that big at all, people is chill, channels are slow.
Etc, etc. The best way to overcome some stuff is training on it.
If the thing get too overwhelming then do whatever you need to relax.
Wait... how can a Ranger get a spellcasting focus?
Captain Planet style
2014 rules, preferably without massive investents
Uhhh probs little nature things
This is an important discussion. Christmas Elves are literally just Gnomes. They’re short, they like like to build and tinker and sometimes even invent, they look a little bit weird, no depiction can agree on what they look like and both Elves and Gnomes are type of Fey thus leading to the confusion
You may get lots of folks contacting you about your game. You don't have to answer them all right away. Just take a breath and remember that you have something in common with everyone here: we all like to play D&D.
I mean yeah
Asking because I may need a spellcasting focus for higher level spells
Flavor it to an item or just make it being a symbol or gesture for each spell
Hunters mark being 2 fingers pointing a creature
Zephyr being a snap of the fingers, etc. etc.
Make the item you are affecting the spellcasting
Arrows, bow, boots, etc. etc.
I hope so, only had two but only one actually was elligible for the kinda lackluster things I said I wanted
A good chunk of spells have a material component. Would prefer to avoid it when possible via a spellcasting focus
If nothing else just say component pouch and move along
Gnome halfling
Generally speaking, yes.
Less flavor, more "Wait... do I even have one...? Oh, crap, may want to get that sorted out ASAP-"
Yeah, any option work honestly.
Even a ring, a collar, etc. etc.
Most dms won't care just explain it away as you have a pouch or like a sprig of mistletoe as a spell casting thing
Just talk to your dm about it is the main thing
Makes sense for a Dwarven nation to have a strong secondary population of Gnomes?
Yeah like have dwarves never the primary laborers and gnomes work on making gadgets for them
I hope dnd branches into incorporating more things inspired by more mythologies
The feature says rangers can use a druidic focus for their spellcasting focus. There is a little table with examples.
One such option is a sprig of mistletoe
i once had a ranger who cast Hunters Mark by releasing a little flying creature that would fly to the marked target and look at them like O-O until the spell ended, in which event it would return to the ranger
'14 with Tasha's gets Druidic Focus
That's cute
Welp, having a familiar doing that would be an epic way to see it
And by working together they have quickly become the most technologically advanced nation on the continent, inventing rudimentary steam power, electricity and pistons, and giving the players a side quest where they can help in the invention of the train
They have fridges... something that other races dont. So they conservate their food differently
Ye! heck make them have access to precious tech resources like lithium to make batteries
i might play a Beast Master with a companion that does that very purpose, yea. i just need one with Hover that can fly up and stare at people with it's big ol' eyes and doesn't actually do antthing to beligerate you
Hi I'm new and i wanted an option if this is a cool character concept or not I have an idea about a sin who is casted outside or hell and loses almost all he power and is basically just mortal
Ravens do the thing
A Ranger with a lots of ravens, some are familiars, others are there for the feast
There are two human Nations, both of which are neighboring the Dwarven, one that’s kinda just chill and has a rather diverse population and is considered an ally of the dwarves and the other that are like, human supremacist and have been at war with the orcs for the last 40+ Years kinda just wiping them out, how much does the ally nation benefit from the Dwarves advancing technology? And how will the rest of the world respond as well?
oh ravens can hover? i'm looking at their statblock and it doesn't say they can
or is hovering not a thing they write down?
Fly yes, hover im not sure
but you have my idea there, some epic on it
no wait, ravens dont make groups, crows do....meh, doesnt matter
Howdy y'all
A staff is a spellcasting focus for druids idk why it wouldn't also be one for Rangers.
But moon sickle is your answer
yea i need a flying creature that can hover that i can reflavor into a nondistinct insectoid that the operator doesn't call anything that isn't just The Drone. they never say what manner of creature it is, only that its name is The Drone and it sees things
The Dwarves invent straight up fridges you think? Maybe, or maybe they come up with the orginal idea and someone else like finishes or improves upon it to make it the completed product, both have their benefits
I don't think spellcasting focuses are really locked to classes? It's more just that's what focus you get from the class, but you could buy something else?
Moon sickles are class specific. But staffs i think will work
idk, but i read that one time about how each race have their ways to conservate food.
While some ferment it, others dry it or cure it. Dwarfs tech let them have fridges
Ty LadyIsLay, it was your encouragement that ked me to updating my thing in the replies in hopes for new players
I haven't seen moon sickles, I think, so I don't know anything about that ^^"
Just the ranger and druids spellcssting +1 etc.
Every spellcasting or half caster has one.
I have a new character idea and I really want to find a new campaign to play them in, cause my current DM cut us back to only one campaign a week instead of two :(
Dwarves invent little mech suit or big robot guys like the dudes from Skyrim?
Well there is find a dm so you can look in there
Heck yeah, that'd be cool take after big daddy from bioshock maybe
should make my kobold fight equip a club weapon? (the one's that bonks an enemy)
oh, yea, a hummingbird statblock does exist that has the Hover attribute
Changing their weapon can also change their CR so be careful with that
I hate to be that guy but can anyone help me understand a west march campaign ive been seeing a few show up but they weren't my taste but that's probably because I dont understand them
True. I'm just sort of anxious about it cause I've only been playing with this one DM for two years and I'm worried about joining another group, yknow? I got bad social anxiety and it took me a while to get used to these guys
What’s your character idea?
Make it a big club that 2-3 of them swing. For dramatic affect
Like swinging with a log that causes a aoe.
my kobold is short i don't think he can carry it if it's heavy
Ah, I'm thinking dhampir shadow monk ^^' Got ideas for backstory stuff but obvs that would need workshopping for specific campaign and whatnot
Yeah I feel that, most people are open and welcoming just post your thing mention that and the right people will come to you
Ahh I thought you was talking encounter lol
If i do this then that can that do this and this do that either that thing doing this
💀
O.o
But you're doing that
but is it ok if i make the kobold equip the Club ( the head bonking weapon that cavemen use)
Ive played one kobold cant remember. But he was a barbarian ancestral guardian
mine is a fighter still creating it
Interesting idea. Do you play online?
I do, yeah ^^
By default?
Way of shadows monk is so fun!
Or do you need something special for it?
I've never played a monk before ^^
My go tos are usually cleric or rogue aha, I'm a sucker for sneakiness
Tomorrow, my party will face a monk... with snakes for hands!
Hii guys
Yeah, Im finally playing my last class after 8 years so it csn take some time
Snakes for hands???
What's your last class?
hands made of snakes?
How does a 3.5 Monk play?
The characters I've played are... Swashbuckler Rogue... Homebrew bladedancer Rogue... Grave Cleric... Storm Sorcerer... Death Cleric...
It has snake heads in place of hands, and snake bodies in place of arms.
IDK. We'll find out tomorrow. I've never played a monk as a PC.
Monk power!
Fighter surprisingly
Playing it for a one-shot
Never multiclassed either?
Ouuu
Or you're saying full blown fighter.
Ok but like in general? How are they designed to play?
Ive multicalssed just not into fighter ever
Is anyone starting a new campaign?
Interesting what's the level?
I've never multiclassed before, but in my current campaign we're doing gestalting
Level 5
1d8, average BAB, all good saves.
What subclass ya going.
What BAB?
They're stealthy usually. BAB = base attack bonus.
Build a bear???
Base Attack Bonus, older edition mechanic
Well I have one player who wants to be a reborn fighter and basically everyone else currently has fallen through it seems, I think that combination seems pretty fun. Maybe we could look at setting something up if things turn out that way and you’re interested
I love charisma characters so Im going for banneret or however you spell it! Im happy to check this off my list!
Possibly, I'm probably gonna be shopping around for a little bit
Banneret my beloved, if only WOTC didnt make it so mediocre :(
Never heard of that sounds fun
And you're the DM?
Fighter that has rp options i like it.
Yeah but its pretty good low level besides I love roleplay and charisma so thats my thing (my friends joke about how even when charisma shouldn't be in the character I make sure they have a giant charisma stat)
Yes,
should i use chainmail armor?
Ikr! It allows you a skill proficiency and too heal others using second wind at level 3
It is Christmas
Ok so what are you planning? Sneaky flurries of poisonous attacks before hiding again?
wut?
Jingle bells everyone will hear ya coming lol
XD
I made a character that was a Drakewarden Ranger but I didnt get to play her 😔
i don't get it?
Its a song
TBH, I'm not entirely sure. I had been focusing too much on the abomination, and now I have to figure it out. I think just straight up flurry + utilising Spring Attack to get out of the way after an attack. Step up, attack, step back.
By Mystra, it's hard to find a game to play in.
Currently I have a warlock, rogue, bard/monk, witch (valda spire of secret class fir those who dont know) and this one-shot fighter!
Like the chain will be moving and rattling. Id wear it if thats your best ac. If it becomes a problem then sell it and get something else.
You should give it the ability to slither into crevices smaller than their size.
i mean is it recommended for fighters to wear it?
Recommend looking at "looking for players" or to make a post in looking for dms
It can change into a tiny viper.
I did. A lot of the games are on Friday or Saturday. Both days I'm not available.
And I'm not sure I have enough gumption to start up a game of my own ...again.
Dang thats rough well if it doesn't go well you can post again in a week and go from there
I think baby snake hands is a great idea. Baby snakes release the most poison don't they?
I had a little look through looking through players and a lot are American times 😭 Gonna wait and see for more posts later owo
If you do make your own game im down to join 🙂
I can only hope.
In D&D, the larger the snake, the higher the Difficulty Class of the poison, usually. This is because larger snakes have more hit dice.
You and everyone else, mate.
So can a level 20 artificer make the Playstation 2
Looking around is always good, feel free to let me know if you’re interested. Good luck with your search
Maybe we need to bewitch some people into being DM's.
Thank you :3 I will do, good luck finding players as well!
Lol. No. The god of Copyus Strikus will smite thine artificer.
The fun thing about fighter is not having to worry about DM psychology and guessing whether or not their the kind of DM that reward picking exploration spells as a caster.
I just meant theatrical in real life baby snakes release more poison because they cant control it. It was just for flavor for the delivery not really mechanical wise. But yes this is true.
No worry, just fight, as a fighter.
Larger the snake larger poison molecules for sure prolly.
Fashooty
Thank you thank you.
A Ploystation II
Have fun with that snake pit of baby snakes encounter I know you're cooking in your head.
Fighter is made for that only, fight.
There are few subclasses that give you tools for interact or more
But in general, fighter is the problem solver of the fights
The enemies are hte problem. SOLVE THEM.
Well good night everyone. Have a good night
Hahaha nah it was baby snakes as hands. Sounded fun. Like you cut off the hand it grows back kind of thing.
Gn
Goodnight!
I actually say Battlemaster and Echo are reasonably fun classes even for the exploration part of the game.
*An Eldritch hand reaches across the realms and reaches into the depths of your Artificer's soul, ripping out its spirit and binding it to a contract to serve out the rest of eternity at the feet of the being S'on y Co'orplted
Nice, but still. Solve the enemies
Limiting fighter to only combat limits your options, thinking bout how they would act outside of it
Give them that special effect that work for solving problems, oh yeah
DEATH.
Lots of ways to solve the fights. But in terms of dps you're prolly right. Yall fighters be pushing out insane damage.
its what we are made for, bows, greatswords, swords, axes, heavy, medium, light armors. Anything of that
the biggest problem is hordes, even using Cleave dont let you kill them all easily
- alot of amazing builds still require 2 level fighter dip. So fighter is included in that.
But in terms of rp you can rp is anything. But with those stats when it comes time to roll. Ya get what ya get
Honestly wish every class in D&D didn't require level dips for truly majestic damage.
The only problem in fact is, your tools against casters is, killing them before they cast.
Beside that, going for throat, book, pepper//dust bombs for blinding.
You dont have to multiclass
Fighter is fun for many bonks, I like many bonks. Fighter also has fun role-playing opportunities. I like fun role-playing opportunities. I like Fighter
Just there's nothing in the game like action surge.
There's a universe where every class feels like a perfect powerhouse.
This is true
Damage isn't everything?
Everyone always wants to multiclass paladins. Not really realizing they can become demigods ||For one minute|| at level 20
Says someone who has never experienced the awesome power of Fireball
Imma be honest, I have no idea how to multiclass effectively. It always just seems so daunting
For now my roleplay in the party is kinda leading them.
I have a bard, paladin, artificer and another fighter but im kinda taking the lead in lots of stuff.
And try to make them be alive most of the time
Will give the lead to some of them someday tho
No, says someone who plays support characters and claims all damage done by people under their Bless as mine.
Step one: Choose Ranger
Step two: multi class into Fighter 3
Step three: ???
Step four: grofit
Smart
Fair also class is not the only thing that determines roleplay species and background also do, and they also influence your playstyle somewhat
Honestly sometimes support is everything
My character rn is a gestalted Death Cleric/Phantom Rogue for maximum spookiness
If I can find a game, I'll probably play a Cleric or a Monk.
is BG3 Cannon due to haveing books with the cast now
Or mebbe a sorcerer...
how about a paladin
Nothing like being in a field of shadows with 25 of em.... then we all climbed in a tree and I cast plant growth.
No...?
I love different things them jsut damage, healing, tank, distraction, utility, rushdown, dps, its fun
I find that Control, especially stacking control classes in a party, can trivialize fights.
Bg3's basically canon in some ways sure
There's bits and pieces of info that were referenced from other campaigns
Focusing only on damage and combat fir that matter limits you to the possibilities
I take the microphone in some talks, last time was with some harpies, their singing was leading to people to jump for accident to their death.
My charisma is low so i act like my words arent well said sometimes and tend to sound aggressive.
"Look, im not angry at you all for what happened, is in your nature. But i have to put a stop to it, move away from there, stop singing or whatever but stop, or we will stop you."
Harpie: Are you threatening us?
"Not threatening, promising, people is dying and if we were in the opposite places, you would do all you can for protect your people. Like im trying right now without killing you all"
Harpie: you right, we sorry.
Yes nothing also like teleporting the whole party away from a aura affect etc.
Yeah, thats a super cool way to roleplay a fighter! I love it!
But when that enemy still has like 130ish health. You're all in great danger someone's down someone's about to go down..... fighter finishes the fight.
But sometimes speaking with commoners or some others is hard.
We have a companion that is kinda traumatized and my character is too kind with him
I need a way for a mob of town guards to destroy a large stone building without magic. Explosives aren't really accessible. Anybody have ideas?
Or being a good trap disarmer, or skill monkey, or idk the name but out of combat support like with prestigidation, illusion, and high charisma
Hammers
Commune with nature
trebuchet
Speak with animals, speak with plants
Building is a tad bit too large for that to be quick enough for the effect I desire. They also don't have any siege weapons on hand
Yeah, thats my favorite oart bout dnd, some people may focus on the combat but I love the roleolay and the nuances of two the characters interact
dang
2-3 of them big log lol jk stone door? We have any viking experts?
local freindly giant
Exactly having a mechanical role isn't just combat. That's why instead of combat and roleplay. I like to do mechanical and roleplay
Man trying to stay a barbarian with any amount of mental stats just feels bad?
How low can ac/hp really be on a barbarian before it starts to become a problem
How did genghis khan son breach china?
You should look that up with Marco polo.
Battering ram
By going around the wall, obviously /s
it 😒 the principle
There is the joke in our group that im giga bad talking with womans.
Like other many jokes on it between us.
I will build a cabin beside a river and build some stuff on it
i need great hair care
I mean at least in the show Marco polo. Marco polo introduced siege weapons to the Khans. I just cant remember what siege weapons they used.
If you're under 12 dex 14 con its awfully dangerous
This is why 14 dex 16 con is important
good thing i brought this elephant
Love the nuance
But Barbs are so straightforward that you shouldn't go below 12 dex 14 con
I was looking at 16 14 14 8 12 11
That’s after racial bonuses
Now were talking rhinos and elephants
That's historical revisionism. The Mongols had siege weapons. Though, actually, they solved the wall quite easily: they just broke down the gates
Or you could forget metagsming and have bad stats or unoptimal stats for fun. That's always good for roleplay and leads to more drama in combat
Con's not the best but it'll work
hope you know how to shrink it buddy, it doenst fit anywhere
Well the story was Genghis never could do it. But his son's did
We have a word for that kinda playstyle (assuming it isn't agreed by the full table)
We call it griefing
i made a reference obscura
I just figured for their story. Stone wall they could do whatever the Mongols did
Genghis did a good chunk of the conquering himself, actually. He was the one who got past the Great Wall, specifically
Hmmmmmm... I mean ig but it is also like especially in a campaign where roleplay matters more, having bad stats or unoptimal stats can be fun. Make a smart barbarian or a strong wizard. The game is about having fun and if that means minmaxing then thats great but if that means caring more about roleplay then combat or stats thats also fine
Gygax himself said a good adventurer. Should have have at least 2 stats 16 and above. Dont quote me lol
But, the Mongol breach of the wall is a little different from what I'm going for here. I want them to destroy, or at least heavily damage this large stone structure, not just get past it
He said something like that.
Flavoring is free, you don't need 17 int to roleplay a genius
Players who metagame summon the destiny ghosts who only the metagamer can see and they drag that player character into hell
True, I’m the goal is a barbarian who is a folk hero; but in the way that he’s like really helpful around town
something something it's impossible to not metagame something something not all metagaming is bad
is it realy metagameing
First death in our campaign was due to not metagaming. I just dont know how to feel about it. We all felt it was a succubus. But we all played along when we thought someone else was charmed.... it sucked.
I agree i think trying to mid/max in general misses the point of DND
it just what is optimal
I mean I didn't mean ti cause an argument I was just trying ti say that its not always best to only focus on the stats, and making best character
You should optimize your character to the level agreed upon by your table
In this scenario i think an intuition check would be allowed
Having a gut feeling something is wrong
I think we failed. I was the wis and I think i rolled a 2 or something
For insight
That's probably just poor planning on the dms part
I was just trying to say that like. Not having the most optimal gameplay or even good gameplay is fine. Its fun that matters...
you wouldnt put your highest ASI in to your classes non main stat then again paladin and some others have 3 main stats
Though maybe fighter might be better for what I’m going for?
Well it was also our choice to listen to the chick saying her brother was getting captured in the other room. + the player was role-playing very well. "I got yall i got yall. Ill protect her yall go find her brother. Ill watch yalls backs from here"
Had a player try to play a sorc with 16 int and 12 charisma. Didnt understand why we were happy with that
Hi
Idk i think there would probably be a better way to run that
You see, the thing is I would. Even if its suboptimal, I think it could make for great storytelling, that was all...
Well to be fair we were searching the dungeon. He walked into that room first and untied her. We were in other rooms.. before going to the that room. We didn't see the charm action etc. It was honestly our fault for splitting up in a dungeon.
i did as well i hated it i was useless
Oh in that case it seems fine
Ok... to each their own...
That's just example X of why to never split the party
Her mentioning brother my brain and everyone else's immediately went to incubus
So that would be metagaming.....
You could ask the DM if your characters knew what succubi were
That would be their call tho
Yo.
i would thimk in a universe where devels and demons are at least rare i would say a adventurer would have heard rumors or storys
💯
We learned that day
Had a ceremony and everything for him.
It was just alot of players choice as well.
We prolly were too hasty to find the brother just incase. Etc I mean idk i was newer to dnd back then as well and I didn't wanta metagame. I rolled insight failed terribly. But def should have asked those type of questions. As well as other members of the party.
Some level of minmaxing is nice as a respect of sorts to both your fellow players and the table rather than going completely random about it
Granted if the table is about messing around and griefing to begin with, disregard what I said
Flaws are fun especially with rolled stats
I don't think it shouldn't be allowed or anything like that or even discouraged I just think DND has a lot more to offer without trying to do that
I guess a metaphor would be like, you should at least put on sneakers when playing basketball, unless everyone agreed you can, and it'd be fine to, play with slippers
The sneaker wearing player is not "minmaxing" basketball, it'd just be common etiquette
My tortle had a 5 in dex because his legs were traded in for his powers as a warlock.
If youre doing it too be such then sure thats griefing but flaws work well in characters and story telling
Because DND is less a game than it is storytelling, like if all the characters are perfect pristine without flaws it can detract
But thats just imo...
But again, at the same time I don't think there's any wrong way to play dnd as long as everyones having fun
Where do we draw the line with doing it too well
Big on the fun part
We have 8 constitution apologists the other day
Thats up to each table
So why are you at arms about Barb being at least 12 dex 14 con
I always raise my con as highest stat. I normally try to hit 17 then at level 4 resilient in con to make it 18. Thats like standard for me regardless of class.
You are a hero then your con better be leagues over commoners
In terms of health and sickness along with everything else.
Even without that they already are
Im just saying you don't always need to be. Saying you need to at least be something limits others. Im here advocating for freedom of choice not griefing
Average commoner is level zero with no skills
Sounds like griefing to me ngl, but yknow this channel is a mixing pot, the point of it is that there's no consensus
Im saying adventuring in harsh climates. (Most tables dont run that) but yes health is constitution. But in reality con is definitely flavored as being able to resist things that would bring you down otherwise. Elements, poisons, exaustion etc
Imo griefing is to do it to hurt others/for no reason. Giving your character flaws and story telling using their stats isn't but yeah I already said that. It really doesn't matter in the end
Or at least hurting for selfish reasons imo
the answer here is simple: if your table is comfortable with characters that will be bad at The Thing™ then you can play those characters. some (perhaps most) tables will not be comfortable with that
Yeah
I want a 8 str 10 dex 12 con Barb because umm, funny? Gonna ignore the glares from the DM and other players, they aren't understanding the true art of roleplaying
in general, the point of a build is to do The Thing™, so that's why most people have an aversion to builds that are shittier at doing The Thing™. but storytell how your storytelling partners want to storytell
Hexblade barbarian?
Does that work? Lol
I feel like thats poking fun but if you're party is ok and it makes sense for storytelling why not especially in a roleplay heavy campaign
Like John Carpenters the Thing™
Moreso John Tumblr's The Thing™
Or it's clobbering time the Thing™
Or is it the hand on Adam's family?
Characters have their Things™ that they do. Generally, you want to be good at your Things™
Like what about a kinda week teenager whose father pushed them into being a barbarian after he dies but he isn't ready for it yet as he didn't complete his training and isn't very good at it yet
Sometimes it can be fun to be bad at your Things™. Plenty of people don't enjoy playing that or with that at their table.
True like a bard dumping charisma.
Yeah your bad songs are cute... but what are you providing
As long as you're not actively a detriment to the party
Or a warlock who got a really bad deal with their patron because they have low charisma
A warlock who dumped Cha is…
Even for roleplay purposes, don’t do that
I mean a warlock who is being bullied by their patron into every decision would be pretty funny
Don’t dump your primary stat (the one your class depends on the most)
By virtue of not providing as much value as someone who was built to actually be effective at doing their Things™, you are being detrimental to the party by playing such a character. The only argument is in a case where the group as a whole is okay with you being a detriment in that way.
at least if you are dumping Charisma on your warlock, use Summon Greater Demon spell
I think mechanically tho you don't want to do that
But I mean my opinion isn't really popular or wanted here and I need to do something else maybe so yeah
I think I’ve pivoted to being an evil DM kinda-
That's like handing a soldier in war a NERF gun. They are an active detriment because they are a useless body on the field, and they could be much more useful if they had a real gun. Don't give your character a NERF gun unless everybody agrees that a NERF gun is chill
Eh... different hours different people
It works a lot better narratively than mechanically
i am generally a constant. my opinions are inescapable
Don't fudge the stats but you can still RP it
I just like roleplay more than combat thats all
I do as well
For asi do you take skill expert?
Sins of Sprigonia OST:
track 20. Count Voros, The Man Who Lost It All
Track 38. Last Stand (Voros’ Sacrifice)
Even if you like it more, dumping a really important stat is gonna make you really weak (arguably useless) in combat. Just because you prefer one doesn’t mean you should neglect the other completely
My opinions are objectively correct any who disagree will have rocks fall from the sky
Sometimes...
Ik it isn't good...
Bards, rogues, rangers, knowledge domain clerics…
It is good
😭 I kinda feel bad about this one but
Someone’s gotta sacrifice themselves against the first and possibly last fight with the bbeg…
I like it on some builds with my observant. Pushing passive 30 if ya also getting adv
The man who sold the world
Enhance ability go brrrrr
Or Sentinel shield
That too
I mean Ive had a 8 strength barb carry multiple fights and had a drsmtic sacrifice after accepting that he wouldn't live up to his clans expectations
Did…
Huh
Did they use Dex weapons?
Hey hello! I wanted to ask if anyone have a bot for dnd cubes, I have some from VTM and world of darkness, but I would like to have some (if you have) for dnd rolls
Avrae
I tend to go with what fits thematically rather than any thing else tho... ik thats unpopular and has gotten me yelled at by several players
No
Download avrae to your server
Thank you so much! ☺️
I find it mildly concerning if a dumped strength barbarian is carrying fights
No problem avrae has lots of options for your characters as well.
Though, DM’s do scale difficulty to fit the party…
Combat etc you can even do monsters vs pcs in combat and avrae records everything)
I will check it out :3 thanks
I just played well and used my abilities wisely
Im a good strategy game player so I can make up for bad stats mostly
Wanta create a monster. There's coding for that. You can add a singular rat. Make it ac 20 with 200 hp and condition and resistances etc. Just alot of coding but in its simplest form just add avrae
Could you give some examples of these strategies?
I wanna learn
Lifeline strategy help here.
I've been in this server for 868 days and have sent 15,327 messages. That's an average of 18 messages a day. However, in my most prolific month this year, September, I sent 1,669 messages, which is an average of 56 messages per day. God save me
Well I tend to use some creative techniques such as using my high intimidation to scare an enemy off a ledge that was fun but I also planned my rages for full affect and carefully selected magic items... it may not sound like a lot but being creative in combat really helps
Touche. Can get a headband of intellect. Ogre gauntlets
Youre set with int and str.
Wow cool
I am just a player now, I will tell my master
I am a world of darkness master usually, but I miss some fun dnd interactions so hope will be able to play
Even tho my master seems to not be able to give me and my party a game because of his job :((
Poor dude working now and has only 2 days to rest for new years, 1t and 2nd of January, that’s all
But bot still will be helpful, so thank you ☺️
How high did you have to roll to get someone to jump off a cliff?
Im so sorry I read that second line like you was a gremlin fidgeting with their hands lol.
The voice in my head "ill tell my master."
But yeah sounds good avrae is awesome all on discord
The Influence action is an underrated one, but the DC for that must be quite high
So I’m curious
Avrae creates the combat for you and its all fluid. Ive even just winged it with a homebrew monster. Gave him giant ape health and changed the ac to 17.
AHAHHA
Yeah try better Draco Malfoy voice about his father
Discord being stupid. I talked right in their face while walking forward and then they kept backing up and then splat
My master will be hearing about this bot
Wouldn't it be dependent on the DM?
It would be, as many DC’s are
Yeah but like most dms are open to creativity
Ik it isn't really valid but its the best I got ig. Idk I just dont really wanna be judged
Yeah and all ya do as a player is copy the link from dnd beyond and run !import (link) you're character will also be in avrae.
But i do, i want judgment.
I want!!! 5 alchemy jugs
I want a donut. Or 982.
Cool
I just waken up so think slow a bit especially considering that english is my third language, could you explain me which link? What is “dnd beyond”? Is it an app?
Dnd beyond is a website that let's you create your character
Or an infinite pizza sílice
Using wish for it if i find a way
Well ok...
You can also use gsheets for avrae
Omg I was making those in roll20 or photoshop list from google 👀
Your table can simply just get the base form of avrae for the dice. Or you can add the combat and get your characters installed etc. Its just fun to go !sb and look at spellbook. Or !sheet to look at sheet. Or !a to look at your characters available actions etc. But to run a game stuff as simple as !r 1d20 +5 etc. Then yall calculate everything.
That is perfect, love gsheets
when was the last time an npcs death crushed you?
totally not asking for evil dm reasons
O no, I don’t have money for this my hobby
Or a genie,
1 infinite pizza slice
2 adamamtine javelin that travel x5 my speed and distance and have return weapon feature
3 a pseudodragon that is part Phoenix so is an eternal creature for my future generations
Anyone know any ways to play dnd online without roll20
Dnd beyond is free
On discord w owlbear and avrae
Foundry, dnd beyond, etc
Thank you
Oof…
Sorry bg3 reference but ||them Harpys man||... I was kinda crushed
I mean- the only one I can think of was when my first character found out his parents died half a year into the journey. Under the impression that they were alive the whole time.
That was the first time I was legitimately emotionally harmed by dnd
emotionally harmed? what
Emotional damage
I think the npc that crushed me was my backstory was a Goliath that fell of a cliff essentially after a blue dragon attacked his home. He was then raised by firbolgs. ... well dm had some of the other boys survive as well and far into the campaign we met up with them. Just for them to be working with the blue dragon. They were totally non chalant about it too. It wasn't death but it was essentially "me or my comrades will eventually have to kill you" type moment. I snuck into their camp by burrowing for some rp lol
Damn…the nonchalant part would drive me insane (in rp) because wow-
Peace everyone. Nice talking to you all. I may join back in the future but Im too nervous to stay in the server for the time being. Peace.
May your pillows be cool
Well the blue dragon was the bbeg the whole time. Then my "cousins" were like "if you actually get to know them they are kinda cool. We spread everything equally across the army" just basically meaning they were in good company and being well taken care of. So it was like a almost how on earth am I gonna convince them to leave. They were trying to recruit me after that for the rest of the campaign. Even tried to capture me once but I got free.
I have a campaign today and we’re missing a player and the idea is floating around of like making a character collectively that someone would play each long along side there character and that person would change each time just wondering if yall have ever done something like that
Ty bye bye
Is it quest time or are they in town?
I’ve heard of it, never done it
This would be the first section of the campaign so not sure but pretty sure it’s a village
Well damn nice on your rolls there. Fkkd up from the bbeg tho
We had a player at first but he canceled on us after making ten campaign a 4 player one so that’s why we’re doing this
Nice rolls on the no jailed escape?
Or sarcastic on the not convincing them lol.
On the failed capturing lol
We were totally in another tent with 2 humans and I was speaking giant to them in the rp hahah
ah the language barrier trick for rp
Not quite an NPC death, but when my character in Witchlight was searching for her father, only to find out after performing for one of the hags that the mask she was wearing for the performance was her father. Left me chilled
Yeah it was like 40 something guards worth of army. Other big things cant remember. I looked to my comrades and simply quietly "run" and I casted a 5th level fog cloud. My monk jumped near above the cloud and I turned into a earth elemental and borrowed. Then used the tremor sense on the casters trying to dispel magic. Simply grappled and buried them in the sand. But monk got away cleric teleported. I stayed and took out their tents and structures along with every spellcaster and seige weapons.....
Earth elemental with fog cloud/ burrowing with tremorsense with bonus action healing goes hard
I think dm genuinely tried to capture us there lol
His mouth kinda dropped on the 5th level fog cloud hahahah
💀
Hello, friends
Grappling with a earth elemental and pulling pcs under us kinda something dms dont do... but as a player ir seemed very useful
This kinda reminds me of the time my Wildfire Druid was blasting through an army of undead with burning hands and other AOEs and using old conjure animals because the party was trying to make it through to a toward that was being seiged to help the people being attacked, I don't know how many undead he killed, but he killed so many that the dm herself said "Damn, has Vaskhir ever considered being a Druid Warlord?"
Wildfire is my favorite subclass to play
Ive rpd that so much lol with the casting from the wildfire spirit level 6
I was the only person in the party with huge AOE's so I absolutely decimated the seige
Yeah teleporting the whole party as a bonus action every round and the level 6 ability is just so fun
He was also wielding and fighting with a Sun Blade as well, now that I remember
Druid with a blade huh? Ok lol I see ya
It was him and the Storm Herald Barbarian, they were very close friends and rivals, so that's why he fought with his own sword lmao. He wanted to prove that he didn't always need magic, but in the siege his magic was their greatest aspects
I remember the first time getting staff of woodlands. Dm surrounded us with demons trying to run to a siege the wall was in front of us. Dm luckily favored us in giving us space lmao. Because my character decides to encase the party in wall of thorns albeit great idea. But I think thats 4 squares and there was 5 of us. So yes we just had to deal with flying demons after that. But we were squeezing lol. That encounter was awesome
Dm downed me and wall drops. Round goes by I fail a death save. Player gets me up and I turn into a water elemental and engulf the large demon
It was epic!
That was moon tho not fire.
If I understand correctly, for craft in dnd you need a lot of down time. So, if you never have that downtime, there's no raw way to craft magic items and it goes out of the window
Is there some items in artificers Replicate magic item + common magic items tables that are very-very useful to have one per day, specifically in ToA? I'd say cheese level useful
Hmmmm...
Wonder what a drunken monk or swordsman would be like in dnd
And no. Dwarves don't count
Drunken Monk is already a monk subclass and you'll need to be more specific than swordsman. Lots of folk have swords.
Maybe something like a chef of sorts who tastes a lot of "exotic" meats for certain dishes
So less a sword and more akin to meat cleavers
Reflavour the slashing weapon of your choice, take the Chef feat.
Or just proficiency with cooking tools.
Reflavored handaxes?
If you like, sure. Can you throw a cleaver? Hong Kong action movies say you can.
Could fit pretty well. Just not sure how to fit being drunk in it. Would be cool to have something like a penalty to dexterity and intelligence checks, but a small bonus to the other 4
It's a style, not a requirement.
(Almost) anything can be a throwing weapon if you're drunk enough
But then again, I can make them close to perpetually drunk
And just have the stats reflect that
Then ol reliable of human fighter
That would be the simplest way to reflect it, I feel.
Or, play a certain race to tie up the element together. What would be the best ones?
Pass. That's getting into cultural stereotypes.
Well, not like stereotypes
I'd say use any race that are completely and utterly unrelated to the concept and it will be the tie up
Something like an Orc and say that the Relentless Endurance fest is just the alcohol kicking in. Something like that
Like I dunno, aarakocra who has alcohol intolerance and thus always drunk from the smallest amount of cider ever
That I can get behind, but I'm also one who'll say something like: you want the dwarf features but want to look like an orc? Go for it. You come from a clan of rugged stoneworkers or something.
Okay, new question
What exactly is a variant human?
Hey um I'm running a campaign for the first time so if anyone can help I would like that a lot
Pop your question in #dm-discussion and we'll see what we can do.
Think of it like this. Mountain dwarf, good for melee, bad for the concept of being secluded and rugged (character is relatively cheerful until the inevitable outburst from too many buttons pushed)
Any human that's not using the default feature set. Usually used to represent folk of a specific culture or lineage.
Species isn't personality.
Either way, I think I got it narrowed down to 2 options
Progress!
Variant Human or Half Orc would be the 2 I'm currently considering the most
2014 rules, huh? No worries. What feat would you pick if you went v.human?
That is also 2 good choices. Which i suppose would be fitting for the 2 moods. Mellow and cheerful, Chef. Heavy hitting with a chance of sadism? Slasher
Probably better that way. Getting comfortable with 2014 rules
I used the ultimate advice and talked to my DM about rule of having original of magic item to use Replicate magic item ability that really bothered me
All I achieved was reluctant agreement that it is indeed home rule and not RAW (after a lot of debates and consult with another very experienced DM) and all i can get out of it is some small thing as sorry (so basically nothing since nothing was offered after all).
If anyone has any idea how to have fun with artificer concept in ToA setting as battle smith without any time for crafting and without Replicate item, I really need your help
I’m a big fan of skill expert, gives your character a really good use right off the bat
Gives you something your party can count on you for
Knuckles the blade bard chef
artificer just doesnt work as a class if you cant make the items
I guess the concept of the character for now was that their family was familiar with hunting and had a particular craving for exotic or some would say "forbidden" meats. After a particularly feisty monster, the meat was a little bit addictive and resulted in the whole thing being eaten. Whether it was a curse, disease, or who knows what, the character now has a condition that makes them perpetually drunk (or a constant craving for alcohol, if that would work)
Weapons could be handaxes reflavored either as family heirlooms for hunters or were originally parts of the monster (very loose example would be like if it was a crustacean's claw hand as a gauntlet. Or at the least, weapons the monster used)
So basically I'm stuck until I change character or DM, since I know for a fact I won't be granted ability to craft anything in the jungle, the game is 90% of the time in the jungle, and I can replicate only things I already have (+ infusion spot and active infusion spot)...
yeah you need to talk to your DM. Either they relent and allow you to play your class as intended, or you need to be able to redo your character or make a new one
like, the crafting isnt super necessary but replicate magic item/infusions are
I've already talked, they believed their interpretation was RAW and it took a lot to convince them otherwise, so now its home rule and thats it
I have all other infusions besides Replicate magic item (at least)
ah okay that is important info. i thought this might be a 2024 artificer
so you can do other infusions, then its not too bad
not a great house rule by any means but its still a functional character
Nah, it's 2014 at least
I'm glad we didn't go into 2024 because his thought process about it the same, it just would be even worse for me
So now I'm trying to invent some way to have at least some fun as an inventor character without ability to craft anything or "invent" things on the fly at every level up
Maybe some common magic item that I can buy and then replicate every day for something powerful/fun to do, or maybe some infusions in 6-th level range are particularly good...
I guess here's a tricky question
What module has the most varied and/or extreme enemies? Loose example: if Cthulhu is actually in Call of Cthulhu
Character may be very curious about eating one of the tentacles
My Dm just ghosted our group 😔
Oooooh, I know the PERFECT species for the class idea
Red Dragonborn, reflavor the fire breath as them pulling out a torch and lighting the breath
They cant keep getting away with this
Third dm im reading about in here within 2 weeks
Dont they know the spiderman motto
I’m really strong and I’m sticky?
No uncle bens last words
You can add a fourth, it’s not quite ghosting but a group I used to be a part of and still hold some love for is unfortunately going through something similar
It'd be nice if folks could at least say something before leaving. Whether it's "I'm sorry, I thought I'd have the time and energy to commit to this but I don't" or just "I'm not vibing with the game. Rather than try and spend time fixing it. I think it might be better just to call it"
It’s always a shame to not at least end on a strong note
I get why folk ghost. And sometimes it's a protective thing ( I've ghosted a DND DM who I really, really didn't want to risk conflict with) but yeah. Folk are often a lot more understanding than people think and just saying that you're not feeling it anymore is at least some communication.
I do appreciate that most DMs in my past have at least chosen to let people know when they can’t continue
I’ve heard of both
I’ve seen both players and dms ghost on some level
Never as far as just leaving without a word mid campaign but on both sides I’ve seen players and DMs go quiet
Unfortunately not uncommon with online games. On online in general. Wish we could influence the culture more just to make it more acceptable to give any sort of communication even if ones mind is already made up they're gonna quit.
Question for chat
If someone's profession were to be hunting, tasting, and cooking exotic meats, what would their tool proficiency be? Cook's Utensils are not an answer (already taken from Chef
Probably rulebooks. I was going to say Brewer's Supplies, maybe?
Why not?
Okay, I forgot to give valuable information
They are almost always drunk, often by choice. Think like a "drunken master" type of character
Which, that would make sense if they know of ingredients to make their favorite drink from their original homeland, but isn't very common in an average medieval European setting
Think like an "improvised" rice wine
Yeah, a friend or 2 was helping me out with the character
Is there a way to cast spells with items in hand (perform somatic components with both hands occupied) using magic items and without the war caster feat?
I made the idea of having it be a Red Dragonborn to do that little alcohol trick where they light the breath on fire
But also have them lie about not being able to do it on their own just so that way they had steady access to alcoholic beverages back then LOL
It's too good of an example for an actual Chaotic Neutral
If one of the items is a spellcasting focus, I think you're okay.
It is,
but I can't find any rule stating it I will just ask in #dnd-rules
Material components: "The spellcaster must have a hand free to access them, but it can be the same hand used to perform Somatic components, if any."
which part of the book / which book
And it goes on to explain about using a focus instead of mats, etc.
PHB spellcasting focuses?
Spellcasting, Components, page 105 in the 5.2.1 SRD.
Found it
in the 2024 PHB it's
Chapter 7, Casting spells, Components, Material, Paragraph 1
Drunken master all the way. It's also a good touch with the rest of their kit
Well that begs the question: what is their go-to bar order?
The only few things that's missing is a DM to share the books to equip the Chef Feat, making the backstory, and searching for a campaign with a heavy amount of exotic monsters. I can only image their struggle not to see Cthulhu and not think about what the mouth tentacles would taste like...
Makes their own. Silver lining, never has to worry about BYOB again
So they never go to a bar for drinks?
Surely they get lazy once in a while
Well, not exactly
True. Never is quite extreme
They could ask fellow bartenders on tip offs for ingredients
Ooo nice
Besides, it is a little hard to look at a midieval European DnD setting and find people who know about or can make rice wine
Ah, D&D has tomatoes, chilli, coffee, potatoes. That's not European.
Good question. Haven't thought that far. They might enjoy the jerky in rations, but could be hit or miss
Let em have rice.
RICE
Also, I never said that it would be nonexistent. Just uncommon
I mean, beer and wine from grapes would by far be the most common and well known alcoholic beverages
Favourite hangover meal that’s not more alcohol?
Plenty of settings will have regions where rice makes sense to be the staple food. Or corn and maize.
That assumes they're not drunk. Try again /hj
Damn good point/j
Exactly
-# for legal reasons, do not try this at home
Goes without saying
Not a drinking guy irl, but a close second to a hangover dish would be a dish you would want to make at 3 in the morning. And that goes to a diner style breakfast, hands down
Btw before you run this character ask in session zero if anyone has any bad trauma with alcoholism
I assume this is not meant to romanticise alcoholism in any way shape or form, just to add flavour to a character
Well, sure
I just think it’s important to note that is is an issue, so some people with poor past experiences might feel uncomfortable with it
Worst case scenario, I can just make smaller changes. Like the fire breath going from totally never needing alcohol to as a neat way of having a portable campfire/stove
And I can keep my character's same craving passion for exotic meats
But thanks for the reminder
If you DO get the alcoholism O-K, There are actually magic items that straight up buff you whenever you Embibe lol
Researching it again and perhaps buff was the wrong word, but... Amulet of the Drunkard might be something to ask your DM about, lol
That could actually be helpful, especially if they can brew their own on the spot
Yup!
And considering the Second Wind, it could be just them tilting it all the way back to get that last drop that's a little stuck
TRUUE
There were a few other ideas I had
Was originally going to go Half Orc or Variant Human, but I thought of Red Dragonborn to do the flame trick people do
Yesss
Friend decided to make it part of them by lying about needing alcohol to actually do it just so they had a small supply on hand
Oh I love that
Peak Chaotic Neutral activities (technically Lawful/Neutral Evil from that, but whatever)
That friend must be really really smart. And handsome too /j
Red scales with orange and yellow accents near the mouth. If you can’t fireball with a spell, be a fireball in spirit
I was going for more human than dragon. Kind of like 80/20 ish
Anyways, I wonder what kind of interactions they would have with a Mountain Dwarf (potential drinking buddy + bludgeoning damage to tenderize the meat)
Or possibly a Lizardfolk who has quite a mew misunderstandings with how others think they'll help (that was NOT what they meant by curing them...)
Might have been a little too late-
A lil?
If you're strictly playing an original '14 Ranger, Tasha is not the default.
A little too late, but i got that sorted out
xan someone please share the link to the quick character maker thing?
DnD beyond?
the thing where you input species race name ect and it auto generates one
Auto generates? I’m not sure which one that is
yep, that's DnD Beyond
DnD beyond is the most popular character creator, if that’s what you’re looking for
Hm
oh I thought you were talking about the quick build feature in DnD Beyond
Ran a crit fishing build today. Half orc, champion/berserker. Reckless attack every time. Loads of fun
I think this is gonna be my go to build. I love getting crits
Same here. Maybe if I find a campaign with smaller more common fights, I can pull out the Assassin Gloomstalker
Whats special about that combo? Never seen it used on any of my few runs
Its the classical nova damage build, all your damage is packed into the first 2 turns
'14 Assassin 3/Sorcerer X is good for crit fishing.
Hmmmm
I dont care if im doing magic or martial. I just love telling my dm "thats a crit btw"
2014 rules. Gloomstalker is great for initiative and adding an attack on the first round, Assassin gives advantage on enemies who haven't attacked in the combat yet and guaranteed crits on attacks landed againsg surprised opponents
Wait, first 2 turns?
I got sad when I saw inflict wounds is a save in 2024. I absolutely loved critting with that one.
But I put it on my 2014 cleric so I can feel that rush again, rofl.
Come to think of it, 2024 kind of shafted a lot of high damage options
Sharpshooter, Assassin and Gloomstalker don't get the huge benefits
Assasinate is such a one trick pony, how was it nerfed in 2024?!
Yeah that's somewhat true. They fixed some things but destroyed others. I don't bother running spiritual weapon or inflict wounds anymore. (Unless I'm a war cleric, then spiritual weapon is fine)
And now my BA on my 2024 cleric is mostly never utilized
Extra damage on sneak attack equal to rogue level, first round only vs a guaranteed critical hit on surprised targets, first round only
It's just underwhelming now. Kind of a shame because of how well 2014 Assassin pairs with Death Strike, if you can get to it
It makes sense for balance reasons
Not always a good thing, I guess
Not really, martials are already weaker than casters, they need all the help they can get
Is it worth taking feats instead of stat increases?
I wanna run a war Cleric for my next campaign but I’m uncertain if I should go more spell based or try to balance it out
This depends on a lot of factors like: how long the campaign is, your DM's play style, what you want your character to be able to do.
Generally, I'd say make the first one an ASI or half feat.
He speculated we might reach 15 lvl or a little bit higher by the end, as for what I want to do , I just want to cast spells effectively (mainly supportive wise with a few dmging ones here and there) and be able to hold my ground with melee attacks
I was thinking of picking the weapon master feat so I can use melee more effectively
Random question
What class would fit best if I wanted to make a character who fights via boxing?
There's four good contenders:
Monk, Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin
Monk and fighter i get but how do barbarian and paladin fit?
Don't those use weapons
Axes and Giant slabs of metal that are vaguely sword shaped iirc?
They don't need to use Weapons.
While both Paladin & Ranger (& Fighter) do get access to Unarmed Fighting Style, '24 Paladin can Smite on Unarmed Strikes.
Unless you're playing with '14 rules, its hard to use Smites on Paladins' Unarmed Strikes
I'm not familiar with those.
I mainly consume dnd media for the world building.
guys i need help lol... 6 bandits + 1 thug against 6 lvl 1 PCs.. is it good?
is it too easy or is it too hard
By the numbers nearly matching the party's number, at a glance, its "balanced". Give me a moment to look at the CR calculations
thnksss
So you can do it way more than before for less damage basically.
depends a lot on battle setup as well. and player abilities. and how deadly the bandits act.
Do the players have any spells to do aoe damage to hit multiple bandits at the same time?
Do the bandits have to spend a round dashing into melee range?
Do the bandits ambush and surprise the players? (initiative in their favor)
Do the bandits focus fire, and take out squishy targets first?
Do the bandits melee strike a downed player to give that player instant 2 failed death saves upping the stakes?
Do the bandits have an ulterior motive or specific objective (steal an item/chest of importance) they would focus on instead of just attacking?
Its considered a "low" difficulty.
The main difficulty comes from the numbers in the enemy side
Hello 👋
Sure. Use average damage for the attackers so the party can see when they're in trouble (crits do max so 1d6+2 becomes 8), feel free to have some more bandits run in if the first go down too easily or the gang to break and run if appropriate.
also 6 players is very powerful. expect the. to be able to handle more difficult battles because of the pure amount of actions and spells at their disposal.
"Balanced" in terms of action economy.
I forgot to ask this but between these 4 which do you recommend?
If you want some magic & armor, Paladin & Fighter. If you want no magic & more hit points, Barbarian.
Monk is usually recommended whenever Unarmed Fighting is considered but not my go to. Its simplicity in design is... kind of pigeonholed
i had 6 players at lvl 3 (with very good stats and an uncommon magic item each) handle a modified legendary cr 8 death cultist fight, but then again, they managed to delay the regular cultist backup so they only had 1 boss to focus on (and some ritual nonsense)
I mean i personally enjoy observant. Especially if ya can get your hands on comprehend languages/speak with animals etc.
Makes sense and running out of "ki" for attacks could be framed as when a boxer becomes "gassed"
But I am very tempted by the fighter's action surge.
I would say, overextending if placed in (video) game terms but yeah, same concept
May I ask what is Overextending?
if you use 2024 dnd rules, i think most if not all the general feats available at lvl 4 give a +1 to relevant stats amd additional benefits. example: warcaster gives +1 to wisdom/charisma/intelligence and also gives advantage on saving throws to maintain concentration, and allow spell opportunity attack, and remove somatic component of spells (can be wielding sword and shield and cast spells)
"Modified" what did you take away from the monster?
gave it additional legendary actions
Just doing too much and comboing into a terrible situation
The fact that dnd is older then my literal mother feels so weird
thank you
thank you very much.. I think i'll 2 more bandits
Cheers mate
2 more thugs 👀💀 make the players experience fear (hahaha) just kidding….unless…???
2 more bandits
a bandit riding a wyrmling 😎
hahaha
“The Wyrmwrangler”
Reinforcements can always come running in from round a corner/ burst from concealment/ out of a doorway.
bandit: “lets kill and loot them quick before the others get here!!” then they can either show up or not, but will definitely make your players sweat, even after the fight is over…
Equally of note, intelligent creatures that lose half their numbers in a fight are very likely to break and run, withdraw in good order or try to negotiate terms.
Iirc, works too with eliminating their leader
maybe their leader was a tyrant commanding through fear, maybe they will thank you for killing them :p
guys how can i make a drakewarden more useful 😔 my guy barely does anything important during combat and gets dogged immediately when an enemy locks on to me
You can fly
At level 10 🤣
"He was a jerk and we hated him. Let us cart our mates off to the healer and we'll call it quits, alright?"
we're level 3 rn
What's your build looking like right now?
I LOVE THIS VERY MUCH THANK YOU.. i'm currently dming them now.. all of them are beginners to dnd and this is my first dm lol
Dogged mediated when locked on in the case for anyone that isn’t sitting on 18+ ac at low levels
glad to help, have fun! and better to keep things flowing instead of taking long pauses to look up rule clarifications. do it after the fight for next time! 🙂
Technically lv7 via Grappling
idk how to list builds for dnd but he has +3 to dex and +2 to wisdom/con
he uses a shortbow, and has ensnaring strike fog clous and entangle
Yeah unless the DM is like "no"
Alright so zephyr strike, especially if you're being targeted often, will be your bread and butter. Keep your distance, keep your dragon either near you or near an ally.
Are you 2014?
And what's your ac looking like?
You could bring up half cover rules
