I starting to question if ranged is even the best option tbh
I ask this for I feel optimization say range is better but I feel that only with some cases like rogue, and spellcasters
anything that limit spells. If its the kind of party i think, an anti magic field or silence would literally turn the party into weaklings
Well, my current character, for example, will be the Gloomstalker Assassin Combo (Yes, Chunky Crits are on the table)
And while i do agree, this is already flowing with advantage states. But this is 2 big things
- It is an advantage state that I can use for when my others aren't available (i.e. no places to hide)
- It costs nothing for me and is something they can do for very little
But if its like, A bard, cleric, ranger and wizard. Cleric and bard can go for close ranges
Cav is also surprisingly interesting
Lots of tank-ness, opportunity attacks, taunts, charges, and other fun goodies
That too, tho that be hitting the casters a lot harder
Extremely cold take: optimizers don't have a clue what they're talking about.
Honestly I feel they don’t take in account monsters, party members, and the occasional tight room scenario
Mine is a champion fighter, same critics. But i am like the main DPS of the group so i try to have both, range and close tools.
Longsword and shield and a heavy crossbow with repetitive shot so i dont have to load it and can attack more times
It's a group game. "Optimizing" a single character is meaningless.
i mean you can always use the swarm of tiamats. i think that is a very balanced encounter tht is difficult for ranged an up close attackers
That's entirely correct. They don't.
I have a bit of a take fine to optimize your character, but still think of party play
Yeah, but again, some caster classes can be tanky, Warlock, cleric, artificer and others can go for frontlines
Fair, but then you have wizard and sorc
Unless the entire party optimizes together, it's a bit pointless to indulge in optimization.
Well honestly we subconsciously optimize anyways
I have a modestly optimised 'Support Caster' XD
Specifically because she helps play to party strengths and covers most missing niches if needed.
Just can't easily replace the rogue until late tier 3 >.>
After seeing the "monkeys" i have for allies (not that i hate, i love them a lot, they just have lots of bad luck like my forced pacifism bard), i did kinda good optmizing a little bit.
"Not actively choosing the obviously bad game option" is very different than subconsciously optimizating.
then hope they win the initiative first and blast them before they get splashed.
Yeah that also true
optimization is fine so long as you don't start outstripping the party by a wide margin
min maxing should only be done if the entire party is min maxing and the DM is in on it
Power Players are outright not okay though
I mean the appeal of optimization is to feel powerful i suppose at least in my point of view. I like feeling strong as my barbarian is built only for combat prowess and thats it. but i think having too much optimization leads to other party members feeling less useful
i had an issue with that in one campaign where other players had a lot more trouble getting into participating because one persons character just felt that much stronger
Why you not choosing the Goliath Sorcerer?
Tho roleplay is free
I'm not against making a mechanically good character.
I'm only saying "optimization" is pointless if it's a single character, when it's a group game.
Optimization tbh feels min maxing
Optimization stuff
Part of good optimisation takes into account the party's general level of ability and tries to stay close to that level
Btw, why sorc use charisma and why not const? like, they have to convince themselves that they are capable of something?
it's fun c:
I've only iterated on my character like 15 times XD
I’d consider myself an optimizer, but I’m not sure what everyone’s definitions are.
True but with the stats and the carefully chosen spells it was a real "I can do everything" type of guy
Charisma is strength of will. Not just persuasiveness or deception.
And seeing synergy with specie features, roleplay aspects as well
Constitution works thematically with wild magic sorcerer... and only kind of.
And leaving plenty of hooks for your DM in your backstory c:
Yeah, i mean maybe the other players were not just not nearly as optimized but when it feels one player feels better at everything it ruins the want to throw yourself in there and let your character get screen time
Champion was almost my subclass instead of Assassin
Problems:
Double crit chance vs guaranteed crits for the first turn
No Expertise in Stealth and other great skills
Chunky Crits being active means that getting a firearm (yes, I already did all of the talking and research) and Sneak Attacks are only more deadly. Average damage now without spells and resources on a crit is... 24 piercing damage (1d8 + 4 + 16) but with a hunting rifle and getting to level 6 (3 for each class), it goes up to an average of... 65 piercing damage (2d10 + 5 + 30, then 2d6 + 12)
yeah but you get my point, their power is from their body. From themselves. But that is fair too
And having such an important stat also become a casting stat... no thanks.
I guess this is true, it also relies on the personality of the meta character
so i guess that STR wouldnt be a good idea too
Yeah, tho that can also get aggravating in a party with multiple spellcasters or they say we don’t have enough time for it ( when we actually do) for a ritual cast
or the person behind it
The only thing worse would be making dex a casting stat
So yeah. Rogue MC was a much better choice
one issue with that is the under optimized characters will REALLY struggle with those enemies
Meta gaming is when you using outside knowledge of the game for advantage, that your character shouldn’t know
dex get enough stuff on it ngl
AC, intiative, a lot of skills.
And a lot of spells are Dext save
Int & wis have the most skills by far
right my fault
Followed by cha, then dex, then str
I think what they're thinking is power gaming
poor con
Did those players assume stats are flavor?
Then con wont be a too bad idea beside it determinate most of your HP sometimes
And concentration saves
True! i mean i've never DMed but i guess there are always ways to handle things in a correct manner
oh true...
And yes, I think i did do the math right here. That's how game changing a better weapon and sneak attacks are with guaranteed crits
I find them different but similar
It's not too overpowered to make sorcs con casters, but it does stack basically all they need into a single stat
Well one of them that had a problem was that they didnt have any outstanding strong stat due to the rolls.
Make them wisdom casters and make clerics cha casters
:v wat
Cover them in a tasty sauce
This is why standard array is preferred by some people
Though it did always kill me that clerics couldn't use wis for religion rolls lol
need a proselytising CHA based cleric subclass
Imma be honest, it really depends what you mean by "optimizers".
yeah, i suppose all the issues were just situational. i mean it was just how the campaign was run ig
yeah, it would be a good exchange and justified too
They can now
and druids can use wis for nature
and both for arcana
Generally, the "big number go brr" crowd
Honestly it kinda vague in some ways
This is usually the go too
same, being able to do around 30 // 50 per round feel nice
But it feels more in line with power gaming or min maxing tbh
I’ll brb if you want me to pick up where I left off just @ me
I’m honestly not convinced that minmaxing and power gaming are different things TBH, it feels like I can never get a good definition.
Power Gaming is like min-maxing + main character syndrome
Neither are inherently bad. It really depends on the energy the player who is doing it brings to the table.
min maxing in and of itself is fine if the party and DM are all on board and expectations are set
a full party of min maxed characters going against a souped up level of danger in a campaign can be fun
Just like railroading isn't inherently bad. There are good and bad ways to do it.
Like, game theory isn't super duper crazy difficult, it's just that this server largely sees what would be considered "low-hanging optimization" because of its subject matter as the "public" D&D forum.
it's when you mix min-max with a standard party that you run into issues
especially if you cut in on everything and try to be the main charater
Trying to be the main character is problematic.
Being a main character isn't. The entire party are the cast of main characters. The story literally follows them.
The way I see it, having reasonable stats using point buy is optimized, multi classing for the sake of incredibly strong builds is only reasonable when everyone is on board with it
you're not generally going to be breaking much with point buy/standard array anyway
and if it is an issue, your dump stats can be targeted
Like if you want to hinder yourself with bad stats, that’s fine, but reasonably characters should be able to function in their primary role, whatever that is
Multiclassing is the fastest path to hamstringing a character.
Honestly I hate when people make bad characters on purpose. It’s never fun long term and just hinders the group.
Needs to be done very carefully, so as not to fall behind
Until you play into a paladin with like +5 to all saving throws minimum
It more so along the line the more I think about is what is optimizing in the truest sense in dnd, because dnd is a roleplaying war game that elements in that doesn’t involve the dice so what is it really?
I don’t mind if they have one incredibly bad stat for some story telling purpose
But anything past that feels silly
That’s fine depending on the party. But don’t be the guy who plays a wizard with 8 intelligence and drags everyone else down.
Most of the time, the only ones I think of are either fighter dips or hexblade dips
Unless that 'Wizard' is a fighter and their favorite spell is 'battleaxe to the face' XD
Of course
Yes, I meant like if you’re a barbarian with 4-8 int, I can work with it
But be good at your main role
Optimizing is largely just maximizing efficacy.
Which is a primary reason I require a narrative reason for people to multiclass in my games.
Oh for sure, the only time I’d consider this is if we’re doing like a combat heavy video game style campaign
Is it thinking of better backstory’s, building the character with how you want to play the character, thinking up ways to work with the party, thinking up ways to make your roleplay/tactical think better for it feels like half of this is even consider
Just let me make my dumb 3/4 caster in peace
So competent characters fall under that
Oh you don’t allow multiclassing? That’s interesting
To an extent, all chargen is varying levels of optimization, ya.
And it not just numbers
It's
Like yeah, it's one way to deal with the issue but at a massive detriment to player agency and build expression >.>
I think it’s fine if it fits thematically and they plan ahead of time to not fall behind other players
And it's in this comment that I'll return to my statement from the other day - I detest the term 'builds' in relation to characters, as it removes all narrative elements and treats them as a compilation of mechanics instead.
Correct. Actual optimization is more about the actual results.
if there's a problem, the first response should be to TALK TO THE PLAYER
so for my next character concept it is to be a conjurer wizard researcher, so in short how does one roleplay a conjurer without being too much for the dm or should i just constantly conjure up white boards?
Blah blah not in '24 blah
So why does optimization only go over stats, feats, and features and nothing else
All of the rules are technically optional rules, It's as core a rule as anything else
I mean, that’s fair. Some people approach it like a video game, which is entirely their prerogative
Shouldn’t it be called battle tactics at this point or number crunch
Aah, is it marked optional in 14'?
I think the issue is we’re all talking about different aspects of a rather board concept.
yep, that'd be it; it's core in 24'
Mhm
also one shouldnt prioritize "flagship" builds but prioritize roleplaying and having fun rather than makes a character set up for strictly for the fight
Because that's the majority of the "measurables". You can actually verify the "normal" efficacy of things you can measure, even if there are deviations.
now you should make your character strong dont get me wrong but busted characters are too much
Hello just behind, I’m Nugget
Setting up a character mechanically strictly 'for teh fight' costs you literally nothing because roleplay is free
'One' should prioritize whatever the table agreed is the type of game being played.
hear me out prestidigitation
There's so many mechanics not related to combat lol
I multi-class because none of the pure classes work in a way I like either mechanically or flavor wise and I can use it to acheive that
That are directly related to roleplay
Not to mention that roleplaying is part of every pillar
And? You can choose to not take roleplay specific spells or feats and still roleplay cooperatively and interactively just as effectively
what about wizards i can never seem to see that they are not fully their own class as elsewise they seem weaker than if you took another level of wizard
I would personally make a strong suggestion to stick to 1 class, but be open to multiclass
Sounds closer to bard
By what metric?
multiclassing as in wizard multiclassing to make them better
It depends on what you're trying to do
Wizard can be a decent secondary class if you want the level 6 feat off of bladesinger specifically
also valor bard for the same reason
Entirely unlikely that the same person who cares most about big numbers in combat also commits as much effort in roleplay
Me when wizard is indisputably the best class in the game
real
What does going 1 level in wizard get you that makes you better than going 20 levels?
Maybe I just don’t get it, it feels like I think of this game as roleplay and rpg but not one and the same at the same time
It's the quintessential caster
-# there's no best class silly
WIZARD! HELL YEAH!
That's a user issue then. I was merely saying that mechanically, being built for combat does not in and of itself harm the roleplay aspect
In a sense, this is where a lot of people fall into the mental trap (that I'm self-aware enough to recognize I used to fall onto) where, just because you can't/don't measure every variable, doesn't mean you can't use existing information to make inferences and determine what excels and what doesn't.
You're almost never going just 1 level in wizard XD
it's like the last class you would dip
Me when I beat up your wizard with my monk
I can't wait for Psion to cone out, I crave it.
random thought
Which was my point yeah
We're talking about people. You can't disconnect that fact.
combat itself is roleplaying, if the big bad that youve been leading up to for the end of the campaign and it dies in 2-3 hits then what was all that work for
can lycanthropy affect dragonborns?
That's the entire point of the conversation
Oh, I hate Wizards, but I think the wizard I have would definitely beat your monk up for lunch money, if he wasn't the most wholesome gentleman in the world
yes
I mean probably, I don’t see why it wouldn’t
That's not roleplaying thats a DM failure for not creating a balanced encounter
Outright barring someone from a MC, especially for a new player, would really dampen their creativity and their future experiences. Especially if there is no explanation to them about why it is being done
So take it with a grain of salt, but explaining why multiclasses are probably better explored when they have more experience in DnD would be much better than banning it outright
Like, you might burn 2 or 3 wizard levels for sorcerer for metamagic and access to subclass features
My wizard would beat tokii’s wizard
Tbh combat is designed to settle itself in 3 turns...
I miss when sorcerers were better (they weren’t really, but I can dream)
My wizard would beat all your wizards
thing that turns you into a type of mammal infecting a non mammal
Hot take, dragonborns dont have to be like, scaly and half dragon and all that
My Wizards a bladesinger with 30 int .w.
or bard for a bit of utility
Jokes on you my monk is broke
Multiclassing at all is strictly advised against for new players by almost everyone in this server so I'll disagree with that first point politely
splits you on spellcasting but that can be fun
Bro knows what the enemy will do before they do it
What are they then?
Foolish mortals.
Dont have to, didnt stop you to.
For.. two sorcery points a day? And 1st and 2nd level spells you can’t cast with your primary stat. I’d rather be two spell levels ahead
yes ik infecting isn't the right term but idk a better one
No, however, he had all of recorded history pumped into his brain by an Artifact
No like what are they if they aren't that? I'm curiouse what you mean
I don’t usually recommend multiclassing for newbies in the slightest
My wizard has 31 int to spite tokii’s wizards int
can be less scaly in general, have some hairs, etc. etc.
My monk has these hands
I've never played a wizard
Fair, just a mental loop, it like trying to interact fully with it mechanically and the roleplay just kinda like I am being punish for enjoying both sides of it
How dare, my Wizards the smartest mortal alive in the campaign!
I dont even recommend full casters to first time players let alone multiclassing
Bro knows what they eat with any investigations
"did you know"
YES.
At least, be more specific and say "Multiclassing is barred from new players due to complexity and likeliness of poor combat effectiveness. Exceptions are possible, but seldom."
Key word mortal
-# ehheheheh
Wizard can work if they read their spells
also has wide enough access to things where they can be useful in most situations with a little help from the party
Lowkey dragonborn is the best species to be
All that int, just to be rizzless
He's literally got expertise in all Intelligence skills and it's always a +20 to his Intelligence checks 💀
It's nasty
That is extremely formal for a DM rule for a game
They wont. They never do. But also Wizard is the full caster I'd recommend against even more than say a cleric that can always change their spells around and not need to manage a spellbook
My wizard has expertise in all skills, as a testament to his superiority over tokii’s wizard
My (hypothetical) wizard has 30 in all stats through Planar Binding+Diabolical Deals
Checkmate sir
My Wizard also has a dragon "Daughter"
My wizard has a Cloak of Billowing so I'm afraid you're both outclassed here
My fighter has 30 in every stat, just to spite the wizards here
Ok you win
We’re on equal footing then.
AND he's a whimsical ass Harengon
wizard has the least additional class features kicking about so you can moreso just focus on the spellcasting bit
There are systems that focus more on either or.
My first artificer has a silver dragon daughter now that I remembered
Who needs to learn when eldritch knights get spells ingrained in their head, checkmate nerds
The answer is 'too late to be enjoyable'
my paladin have an Harpie adopted daughter
No joke, our groups barbarian has one of those and some golden scale mail armor of gleaming and I’ve never heard of any more fabulous looking barbarian than his
My answer is “I spam cantrips and shield or absorb elements, idk”
My Wizards got a Spirit/Song Dragon, fitting as he's a Bladesinger, he drew the Dragon Card from the deck of many things
Everyone’s laughing until the fighter casts fireball
It doesn't have to be formal, but it is a good explanation that the average person can get behind
My wizard when they have Elminsters elusion active: 🤷
I just say
“I usually don’t recommend multiclassing for beginners, it’s the easiest way to make a weak/underwhelming character and it’s more complexity that usually isn’t needed”
My Wizard when he's just a better swordsman than your filthy casual of a fighter 🧐
Artillerist Artificer with Spell-Storing item, Fireball on the figther's sword XD
Very nice very nice, how are your greatsword skills
it's the LITERAL
BOOMING BLADE
My monk doesn’t need weapon, he needs money to punch
Who needs a ranged weapon when you can cast fireball 10x per day
Then fighter hits you like 12 times in a single turn
The “humble” Invulnerability spell
I will say, fighters are some of the best for beating legendary resistance too
who needs weapons when you have Eldritch blast
Who needs Eldritch blast when you've got a big toe
The 'humble', don't let the martial character get close to you XD
welp, if you want to be 100% epic, you can put marks of spells in your armor and weapon. Considerate it like your "spellbook" thinking that fighter get the knowledge to access to spells
I simply barely touch the Tarrasque with a toe and it DIES!
Maybe the eldritch blast was the friends we made along the way
The humble grapple, knock prone, chain down with an immovable rod
The humble Misty Step
The humble misty step
And that’s without action surge
LOL Tokiiiii
Using a pilar like a weapon and hitting the pinkie of the tarrasque.
Eldritch knight, humble misty step to you
2 whole misty steps?
I have said this before and I’ll say it again. Misty step is good on approximately 100% of characters.
The Humble Planeshift when the Fighter bores me
the humble 'silence' 😶
Nobody is getting away from the eldritch knight
The humble subtle spell
the humble counterspell
Meanwhile the counterspell in my backpocket
“It’s getting a little too humble in here.” - Oath of Glory Paladin
Just kidding! It's a gun!
then you just counterspell the counterspell XD
the humble divine smite
The humble constitution saving success
The humble immovable rod firmly planted in your prone body
Jokes on you. My Wizards been pumping weights
BEHOLD
The BARBIDIZARD!
The humbler moving 15 feet
y'all are getting hit with befuddlement
The behumblement
It’s always funny to think about some dude just loving to fight and throwing hands with an ancient dragon, a giant and a god tier spellcaster
Me when Befuddlement is an Int save and I'm playing the Int class 🧐
Same, my fighter has 30 int
The humble portent nat 1
The humble indomitable
I can't wait for Psion to come out, I really wanna play a Metamorph Psion
If he was on a fighter perhaps
Literally just be Alex Mercer from Prototype 💀
The humble
“Stunning strike+grapple+shove+darkness-cuz-im-a-shadow-monk” against all spellcasters
I just wanna play a genie paladin, some goofy human running around without armor and swinging blades with smite lmao
Genie paladin is out
I can’t wait until I can stare and pose menacingly and/or glamorizingly
Just gotta play a rune knight fighter, slam that ancient dragon to the ground
My Genie Paladin didn't use armor and duel wielded. He perished, alas, he fought a Lich so the party could escape the shadowfell
I’m waiting for a new campaign to play it in
I’ve got it ready to go
Mfw the dragon knows how to use hit and run tactics
My next choices are either open hand monk, lunar sorcerer, thief rogue, or abjurer wizard
Thief rogue is a lot of fun
Not when they’re grappled, knocked prone and have an immovable rod sticking out of them
Indeed it be
get your grubby little hands on everything. that was my first character
ESPECIALLY fun as a changeling
part of it is dependent on another party members selection between all doing a thief rogue or a draconic sorcerer
Should I play a paladin or a rogue next I wonder…
Paladin
Rogue
palague
Monk, always go Monk.
CORRECT ANSWER
Mfw the dragon presses the button and goes back to flying
Get silly with it and go wizbarian
BARBONK
Barbonk is an extraordinarily good point
I’m already playing the 2nd warlock of our current group and I find I like it better when there’s no duplicate classes, but especially not doing duplicate subclasses, and ESPECIALLY thief rogue. There ain’t enough magic items in town for the two of us
You're welcome for the awesome name
wizbarian rage is just nerd rage
Mfw when the rune knight is literally overpowering them in str and keeping them pinned to the ground
The power of umm actually
ERMMMMM YES I AM A NERD, BOOKWORM IM STUDIOUS
If you don't like MONKS then I will obliterate you (in minecraft)
Wizard/barbarian is when someone slanders your favourite book/movie
Not a chance an ancient dragon is beating a rune knight in str checks
Uhh….Raaarrgh! /Am I doing this right?/
"Im gonna beat you up for dissing my sci fi telenovella /srs!"
I can't wait to play my Centaur Barb
wizbarian is me typing a first year undergrad level essay defending my favourite character
I still prefer Barbizard.
I like Barbarizard
I'm the CEO of naming things
Hi the CEO of naming things, I’m Nugget
A Druid Monk?
That's a Drunk.
I do like that muscle wizard that popped up a few months back that's basically barbarian with a handful of flavoured spells.
I still think bardlock sounds like a ship from 2014 Tumblr
Bardock from dragonball
The dragon just needs to succeed once
YES
Dr. wholockian
A Monk dipping one level in Barbarian for the Rage is good for the BPS resistance if nothing else. Of course you couldn't use any Monk abilities that cast spells during Raging, but that's just character management
Sherlock x someone’s bard oc
Sorcadin?
No
Paladerer
I’d just be worried about the stats there
sorcadin sounds like the name of a character from a 1980s fantasy book trying to be the next Wheel of Time
A Druid Cleric?
Nah, that's Deric.
wym?
Well, you need a base 13 strength to multiclass into Barb, and monks already are a bit MAD
yeah like some sort of 80's space movie with arbitrarily weird names like zalacknear
or palard
Names of the characters in jason X
A 13 isn't bad, just take one from one of the other stats.
Jason X mentioned, rage brewing.
Barbizard moment
BARBRIZARDING!!!
This is the hundredth time I’ve heard people casually mention hating Jason x. Why do people hate it I’ve never watched a Jason movie
I cast... PUNCH!
My hammer will show you why this movie is not representative of my favorite series! #PWNED
modern dnd campaign setting barbizard who really really really wants to be thor
It's the worst movie in the entire franchise and it takes place in space for absolutely no reason besides the fact that there was a small trend where things would be put in space
Technically it's called Friday the 13th
Does he like murder people in space
Yo guys, I have an idea for a campaign I’m DM’ing. If you all would be so kind I would appreciate an outside view on it
YOU DID IT! you found the plot
Yes.
Yeah but nobody’s there for the Friday stuff theyre there for Jason
yurrrr
Is his mom in space with him
no
Is it anything like Event Horizon
why
Flips a table
And hes just angry for the heck of it because space teenagers are having fun
Are the teenagers like Martians or are they on a school space tour
they are just humans with very weird names for the most part
No, they're literally just people.. and an android.
what the hell is going on here
Jason x
Jokes on you, I plan to play a Jason x themed campaign
Let me innnnnnnn
I call dibs on being the Slasher
i want to be a clumsy space teenager who loves baking with a stupid name lke gerber life program
noooo not dbd
What would fried dragon scales taste like
probably like fried fish scales but tougher
Hold up, let me bust out my Alligator Snapping Tortle Beast Barbarian for it
Be a mutated swamp freak
Ooooooh unga bunga
i have a doughmancer wizard subclass that i will use as soon as i get it working and i have the opportunity
Be warned, im making baking harmful
Basically, It takes place in the abandoned city of damine, Which was planned to be a place of great fortune, prosperity, and wealth, A city made of gold. The world’s greatest lords and ladies were invited to live in it, Given the chance to ‘begin again’. The only problem was that the city never opened its gates, A great catastrophe left it abandoned, Only inhabited by the remnants of dead people and the ghosts, And covered in a bright red cloud, Which could kill any man who so much as breathed it in wrong. A shining monument in the midst of darkness, Luring treasure hunters to certain doom. But it isn’t finding it that’s the hard part.
It’s letting go.
Clearly a student of Mung Daal
Oh, I forgot that channel existed
You take the moon and you take the sun!!!
yesssssss, its all about having a big bread golem companion and im making it very customizable
What happens if i eat the tootyfruit??/
bad stuff but now im going to turn around and pretend not to notice you reaching for it. "and i'll eat it" yup even after i just told you not to
Is it bad that I know the inspiration?
It turn you in a sentient stink cloud like kenchi over their
The inspo is straight gas, And I already told my players the inspiration for it.
Radda radda
Baller DLC from a Baller game. Feels like something you could actually make work in DnD too. Maybe you could let me join?
i can feel the 👉 👈 lol
Sure, I’m still setting it up, But can you make the time?
Give me details in dms
Alr
Nah. I'm just also passionate about the inspiration source
Less the finger touching, more the sparkling eyes
haha yeah was just goofin off
Guys how do we feel about the advice of
“If the players can do it the dm can as well”
i felt cringe writing that ngl
As a player, Yes, Please
fair game
Ok yeah that was what i thought as someone online said it was a shit take
Like i get being creative and targeting one enemy to kill them faster but if the dm does the thing now thats being a mean dm
I wouldn't take much stock in anything said about dnd online outside of here
Cause here if someone says some wrong stuff, someone will correct them and it usually doesn't devolve into crap flinging
Ok yeah thats what i thought as i think they took it as a blanket term rather than specific encounters
Like there's people online that think challenging your players makes you a bad dm
Ok cool im glad we are all on the same mind when it comes to it
Bruh my second encounter is challenging its meant to represent that they arent always strong enough for the fight and you might need help from others
(Players vs big thief band, then towns guard shows up to help)
Fair i think im the ladder tbh
I love combat and the roleplaying aspects but perma deaths of a character are strictly for the end of the campaign cinematically unless they wanna swap out characters or side mission to bring them back
the most deep i would go is a more survival kind of game, an example to settle it is "The long dark"
that is my greatest fear as a player. losing my character to nonsense
or just losing my character in general
i like them, i made them for a reason
Almost had that happen to me twice my last campaign
and maybe some permanent injurie but that would be rare
ive had so many character deaths and so many backups im numb to them dying
I like having resources be pressured and long rests being available when you're nearly out rather than after like 1 or two encounters
Nah perm injuries are strictly cosmetic if they impede gameplay thats a curse
Missing a limb but there is a system about using replacements.
Yeah, you can get an special item that is easy access but you can get a better for a higher price
i wouldnt mind losing an arm if i get a special cool replacement one
Oh missing limb homebrew is one of my favorites to mess with
like melinoes or a metal one
I always use artificer armorer and play as fullmetal alchemist but artificer
Hey i need my armor, “why”, because i need my right hand?
Its more the idea of it for me, A cold place where any animal would attack you like wolves, bears and moose (jaguars later added to the game). Would add lots of other animals, enemies, etc etc.
Make that Freezing is a risk, lack of food, water too. Sleep is important and sometimes there would be some events.
The aurora making animals more aggressive but you can access to more stuff, Storms, etc. etc.
Some injuries needing X treatment, needing to make campfires and mark maps, etc. etc.
Give an example
i make many characters with something already messed up about them because its cool. i guess i just find replacement arms or legs cool. especially if the replacement arm or leg is something cool. i had a fighter with a metal arm that was going to be her main source of damage was just punching with a hunk of iron
Question. Anyone know some other servers for alll things DnD? Asking so I can broaden my search areas
This one.
I mean this is the official D&D discord ran by Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes D&D
Key word being other
Not sooooo hardcore, i dont want my players to just get too frustrated. If they dont F€$&it up in lots of ways tehy will survive. Only need to be aware of some stuff and more
And otherwise you can try the discord of many things, maybe greenwood's server?
Discord of many things has a neat community
Like drink water without boiling it, raw meats too, sleeping in a non safe area, etc. etc.
I suppose that is true. Just wanted to see other servers that were available
We went down the rabbit hole we think it is good advice as no one can break necks gauge out eyes and other actions like create water in lungs
But the person who i heard it said that it was a bs rule as it was blanket like everyone having silvery barbs or doing unfair actions like targeting a specific player constantly like how normally groups target enemies all at once
So we got it all sorted out
Could check some of D&D community servers posting in #looking-for-community
im not yet, someday i will try it, maybe i mix that and Darkest dungeon in one so i have an excuse to add monsters and be less harsh
Unfortunately, it is quite flawed in some areas. In particular, all it can take is one person who hates you to make sure you'll never enjoy any of the good again
How nice survival campaign unfortunately
The humble good berry: 🍇
you can say that for any server...
Yeah, i dont mind honestly, if they manage in any way to survive, warm, eat and sleep properly. Beside some fights against monster and wildlife. im good
Valid honestly personally im not experienced enough to make a survival session so ill have to do some research
the thing is dont making it too hassle for the players
same
, in my head i have the theory. Not hte practice
But thankfully im good at improv which i feel is the number 1 skill a dm should have
Ah yes no more healing for good berry
or find someone to cast regenerate, though that's real pricey O_o
Yeah.... "replacements" would go to wood and other many. If you have a wood replacement you dont get prof in the weapon you are holding anymore. Maybe there is an already made system and i dont need to build up everything, i wont be surprised
So dms i have a quick question as a challenge: what is your response to the infinite wish x simulacrum combo
no
5% chance to perma death
seconded. no
you aint Mansoon
so, each time rolling a D20, if oyu get a 1. You instantly die.
Can even expand it beyond servers, ye.
Though as a proper answer, I'd likely rule it as the simulacrum counting as "you" for the purposes of not being able to cast wish again if you fail the chance (With player being aware of this ruling)
Id say personally, “as you cast your spell you feel something grasp at yourself and it pulls the magic away from you as you cast but not making you feel it has lost it, as you feel mystra herself denyed the effect”
Some are just more power trippy than others. But that's why I said Discord as a whole, not anywhere in particular
? DoMT doesnt have mch power tripping?
DoMT has pretty much zero power tripping, ye.
Yeah, last time he only beheaded the peopel with numbers in their names
all i know of is the mods instantly nuking bots
Who/what is DoMT
Fair enough. I got the message
Hey sorry folks we do need to be careful here as one of our server rules is to not bring off-server drama to our server.
I apologize
A different D&D Discord server, with a large focus on homebrew. (It's the tag I have.)
Uh oh
yay!
so. alignment discourse again?
No worries - thanks for your understanding!
martyr me
No problem. Just a little annoyed over what could have been over there
i have cool ideas i cannot execute
no dm and just bad at making it in general
well i have one but i get more ideas faster then new campaigns
The other semilarge D&D Discord I'm aware of is DnDNext.
Could you logically be a penguin as a race
Specifically like a australian little blue penguin
oh ive only ever played online
Because I wrote 2 pages on a homebrew for one
if you have love in your heart you can create anything. you could make it very fun, like faster movement speed on ice and no issues travelling on ice
i think it would be a lot better if it was in person. probably preventing issues with distractions
Create Water
well most people ignore that spell so it woud require that choice
Create Water, Goodberry and Leomund's Tiny Hut
Yeah i wish i could play that way it would helo me feel more immersed, people can read emotions better, see peoples faces, more cohesiveness better interaction
Also Tiny Servant and Unseen Servant helps
ye, That's more or less how the ALPG handles it
Wish. Casting must be in front of the DM and only
affect characters within that session. You may not use DT
to recover from stress. Losing the ability to cast Wish can
only be undone by wishing for a reroll. Effects made
outside Wish’s effect list are at the DM’s discretion. All
effects of your simulacrum casting Wish are experienced
by its character and an inability to cast Wish extends to
their future-created simulacrum and Wish cast by deities
(Divine Intervention or similar class features
-ALPG 2026.2
That doesnt even work anymore, at least for 2024
also Elementalism and Create Food and Water
Circle of Dreams Druid level 6 is also relevant c:
and the 2014 outlander background feat
you just have to make a party of all small characters so half rations are now full rations
Well yeah but it limits to playing in one playstyle which i dont think many people like to be put in the box
i think it would be more fun to play as you are and adapt in order to survive
which is why many survival campaigns ban those spells/feats
less so leomunds and the dreams druid one but the ones that make food/water and the outlander background
yeah that would make sense
Ban spellcasters for survival campaigns, there's always a way to circumvent things
Thinking of making a new campaign, focusing on pulling inspiration from dystopian novels. Anything think they'd be interested, or would it be seen as stirring the pot?
eeh, spellcasters are fine, just remove spells that trivialise the core challenge
I mean, Dark Sun is a thing for a quasi post apocalyptic setting and touches on some of that as far as I'm aware
You're probably fine with more dystopic themes/settings if you find those interesting; just need to find players who want to run it
Presently waiting for them to announce the upcoming expansion booklets as Preservation druid is likely in there and it is my prefered druid subclass by far c:
and is likely/rumored to be in that setting
Well the apocalyptic subs honestly I'd be very surprised if they do make it to print that it's not in a Dark Sun book
Cause
Circle of Preservation is the one Druid Circle left on Athas that preserves the last bit of nature left.
Gladiator was a class added in Dark Sun 2e
whats going on? Dnd?
Defiled Sorcery is a given as well
in this server? nahhhhhh
Since the Defilers drew from Athas itself for power and turned it into a barren wasteland.
And Sorcerer-King Warlock is just as blatant as Gladiator Fighter and Sorcerer
also the UA for psion which I understand is apparently also tied to the setting
brain blast
Is it another intelligence based class?
Since regular magic isn't a thing for common people in Athas
na, things would be still harsh
It's reserved for Defilers and Sorcerer-Kings
all three subclasses in the UA were interesting as well
Dark Sun's a good setting to run in if you wanna restrict species options as well
agreed! I hope for a fourth subclass as well.
Since most species in Athas died or were killed
So I’ve noticed that characters can apply things equal to their proficiency bonus, like orcs add hp relating to their prof bonus when they dash. But it doesn’t specify exactly which bonus. Like what proficiency bonus would it use? How do I determine it?
The proficiency bonus
I don’t believe I understand your question. It…is your proficiency bonus, the one that scales on your level
Proficiency bonus increases with level its flat across all things
wait, it increase with all the levels or with your class level?
It increases by character level
There is only one Proficiency Bonus
im asking in the sense, if i multi class to like 4 classes, my proficiency still level up?
Okey okey
They all scale to your current level
Yes cause general prof is tied to character level not class level
level 1~4 +2
level 5~8 +3
level 9~12 +4
level 13~16 +5
level 17+ +6
okey okey
I advise against MCing with 4 classes tho
But what does general prof apply to in terms of rolling
Does it literally only do stuff for class features and spells
Whatever your prof applies to
i assume youre referring to Multiclassing?
Yes
I did, but I know what I'm doing
still not the best though XD
If you’re proficient in a saving throw/skill/weapon/spell attack, you add your prof mod to it
Your to hit modifier, spell dc, skills that you are proficient in
And any features that use PB bonus outside of it
im creating an abserd character
ill have one of everything
if they didn't want you to be level 1 in every class they shouldn't have made it possible to get 13 in all stats with background + point buy
They encourage all styles of play it seems
How do y'all find ppl to play w 💔
i found my grp trough discord tbh
Friends
i said one day hey i wanna run Curse of Strahd and looking for players
Scrolling r/LFG and the various LFP discords
also play Adventuirers League which is good for one offs with moderate scheduling delays
Really quick n dumb question. How do you submit a looking for dm post. I like, did the command and filled out the thing. But Idunno how to make it actually go n post.
The buttons disappeared after I filled out 7.
i mean if you are looking for a grp i think i might squeeze one more player in a campaign that i kinda wanna start after new years. mind you its gonna be a very long campaign
I mean yeah feel free to msg me about it. But like, trying to make the post so peeps can skip the obvious questions of 'what time r u available' n such.
Neat ass system, might as well use it.
Be a DM
????
Profit
my friend finally is willing toupgrade his recording equipment 😭
maybe we can actually film sessions 😭
Anyone else feel honored someone wants you to teach them dnd?
i tried it. now i am a forever dm
I’m still new to dm’ng so I feel honored that someone wants me to dm them.
I'm amazed folks come back each week. 🙂
What does range (x)ft/(x)ft mean?
Like 150ft/600ft for range? I’m curious because I’m creating a ranger character and he gets a longbow and that’s its range setup
Normal range/Long range
In long range you can attack but have disadvantage
Ohhh. Thanks!
Any enemy you shoot at that is > 150 ft away from you is at disadvantage, and > 600 ft you cant hit them
Unless you have some specifics, sharpshooter i think dont make you have disadvantage
yep, feats can modify it
idk if some spells too but that is something to take in consideration
Yeah no spell does that
any idea if Arti infussion does? any of them
Nope
spells typically dont have a long range and a short range in the first place
They mean manipulate the Long range and short range
some for example Ranger spells modify the attacks, zepyhr strike is an example.
Yeah that doesn’t manipulate ranges. That just adds damage like smite
Modify the attacks but yeah, its understandable too
Cute pfp
Hey guys. I’m currently looking for a DnD campaign. Does anyone have any open spots? I use dnd beyond btw
Not for this channel. If you want to find a game you need to use the #find-a-game channel.
Okay thank you
thanks :p
Normal and long range. It means that you can still attack from 155-600 feet away, but it will be at a disadvantage
Is there any roles or channels I can post about this in? Search hasnt helped me rn.
In #looking-for-dm ?
If you completed the form it should be in there unless there was an issue with it
Yeah I filled it out, the message is still hanging there, the buttons disappeared. Do I gotta like redo it?
Did you submit?
Not sure, the button disappeared after I filled out 7.
The Submit button just disappeared?
I'd send a snip if I could. Aint any buttons anymore.
Maybe try redoing it? Copy your answers so you don’t gotta rewrite everything
Aight just didnt wanna give the bot a heart attack.
Hopefully it doesn’t
Hokay that worked. No heart attack created for the bot.
Merry Christmas Adventurers!!!!
Question
if someone has lost the ability to cast a wish because of stress. Can someone else's cast wish to remove stress from the 1st guy and gain the ability to cast wish once more?
Hello
Can you use spirit guardians an spiritual weapon at the same time? People on the internet are saying yes but in dnd beyond they’re both concentration spells. You can’t cast a concentration spell while another one is active right?
Correct
Spiritual Weapon is not a concentration spell though so you can have both active at the same time
It is Concentration in '24.
In '24, you can, but only as a War Domain Cleric, since they have an explicit casting of it where Spiritual Weapon does not use Concentration.
I’m playing 5.5e and it says they’re both concentration spells
That's what I said.
Have I been playing the wrong year of DND for over a year now?
No, you have it right. They are both Concentration.
The only exception being War Domain.
Ohh I see I got confused
Anything beyond the listed options is entirely up to the DM, really.
Personally as a DM? I'd allow it. Risking your own stress to remove someone else's sounds like a fair risk 😛
So as a life domain cleric there’s no way to use both simultaneously?
Correct. Life Domain's niche is all about healing on top of healing.
War Domain worships gods of war who, via Channel Divinity, can produce Spiritual Weapon without concentrating.
Ahh I see
Well this sucks. How am I supposed to be useful to my party
I'm assuming that's sarcasm. lol
Oh?
Using glyph of warding to help allies cast spells instead of making nukes
Because apparently that’s too “OP”
According to who? It's an abjuration spell, after all.
"Step on glyph. Glyph does this." That's it.
Do you think I could use glyph of warding for a spell like healing word?
Put glyph on individual pages of a book and throw at vampire who almost TPK the entire party
Wouldn't Cure Wounds be more sensible?
Vampire see book pages an triggers the explosion on one page, causing a chain reaction of 78 damage in 1 turn
Tomato tomato my point still stands. Would that work?
I don't see why it wouldn't.
in yalls opinion, what is
- the best fighter subclass
- your favourite fighter subclass
Battle Master for being well-rounded, Eldritch Knight because I enjoy gish characters.
what source is battle master?
Player's Handbook.
on dnd beyond i only got
champion
arcane archer
cavalier
rune knight
samurai
I quite enjoy Arcane Archer, and I was excited it was in Unearthed Arcana, so I know we're getting an updated version soon. Magical Arrows, because why not?
thanks!
What's the most evil thing you guys have done in DnD?
As a Player or as a Dungeon Master?
Let's say both, both is good
Err, as a player-character, my cleric abducted and tortured someone for weeks, kept them alive through healing spells just to keep doing it, and did so in the guise of the victim's loved ones.
As a dungeon master, I don't know, probably whatever minor inconvenience to a player.
My bbeg slaughtered millions sooooo
Player prob murder a church out
I did the turn a handshake into a inflict wounds trick.
That's messed up. I love it.
I genuinely can't remember what I said but it was something like "It's ok, I forgive you, I won't remember you."
Transformed a towns children into permanently happy murderous gingerbreadmen
Honestly valid.
Had to? You didn't include any alternate methods?
Wish spell? They were level 5
No, like have it have been a curse then undo it or something.
No it was just a christmas oneshot so rather limited
Oh no they were gone. That was on purpose
Fair enough, if the focus wasn't on stopping a curse, then it wouldn't fit.
I was just surprised. I found it a fun idea for combat
To this day they call me horrible for it
I mean yeah.
Its just happy biscuit men
Children turned into something still means that they were children.
Ive done worse imo but i am told this was the apex of my dm villainy
Sounds like something an old wive's tale witch would do
Agreed.
If they were gingerbread men, what would've happened if it rained
Eeeh they were magical
Magic baking that prevents the dematerialization of baked goods in ill fitted weather sounds like a dream.
No, but I think eating a donut in Florida mid hurricane would be hard.
If im that sad, i wont care if the dough gets soaked
"We kept on asking could we but forgot to ask why"
Because I am legally allowed to go to a Krispy Kreme in bad weather.
I should introduce more baked goods to my games. With like little effects, feels like we need that.
i murdered 50 goblin children at the same time
i told them to line up for cake then uhh
What was their alignment
aganazzar's scorcher (poof)
Oh, linear i see
chaotic evil
i cant miss a few, the spell is in a line
Imagine asking 50 people in a line their alignment so as to judge whether you should kill them or not. Wild stuff because they'd think you're insane and would all say they're mostly decent, not knowing of what exactly an alignment is.
OH YOU MEAN THE GOBLINS OHHH I THOUGHT YOU MEANT THE PC
Alignment
Line
Alignment
Linear
gosh im stupid
Threaten some Harpies that were giving problems to a village.
Made my words clear, if they dindt stop their singing, i would cut their wings and finish them off.
Beside that for still being kinda new i didnt did nothing bad
Trying to stay cool isnt easy when your whole team are psychos.
Only threaten? I commend you for that
Probably erase part of a continent from existance
Mh?
I didnt had to, they understood that their nature harmed people and i dont had any bad intention. Only another one protecting like they would protect theirs from anyone else.
But said them that if we had to came back i wont even give the chance of talking
Even if i am a fighter and my speciality is solving the problems makers, im trying to give space of talking. Wasnt a good idea, any creature that approach 10ft from my party is getting dropped
Evening
Oh my
How much of the continent
I think it was about 40%
What did you do
we accidentally merged multiple planes of existence into one area of the continent
That’ll do it
How do you accidentally do that
we know of someone that for accident summoned Vecna and like 1 or 2 bad gods at lvl 2.
You will be surprised
as reborn you cant be put to sleep. can you be put to unconsious ?
Boys
artificer
Can a level 3 wild magic sorc survive in astral plane if yes how
Merry christmas chat
🎄 🤶
Sure. Being unable to sleep doesn't make you immune to the unconscious conditon.
Thanks. Happy Holidays!
ok thx
There are cases where reborn are immune. The sleep spell, for example, specifies that creatures that don't sleep are immune.
like consuming menga leaves as a reborn race
Additionally, the reborn race does specify that magic can't put you to sleep. So I'd say that gives immunity to, for example, eyebite's sleep effect as well.
also get advantage against poison would be a great race to make a witcher like character with
doest need to breath to
Quick question I've been wondering - if you were to get a critical hit, and the attack uses a piece of ammunition that is coated in a damaging substance, does that substance's damage also double as a result of the crit?
Iirc no.
Haven't used poisons much yet though. Just about to start with a poisoner necro bard.
Wonder how that relates to curses. 🤔
It depends on the DM honestly I've seen it happen in some tables with similar situations and each DM has their preferences
lvl 4 paladin, cast find steed. sells horse at market in next town i gets. profit. repeat next town
Level 5 but I like the spirit
Also the steed summoned by find steed would be worth lots since it can be a fey, celestial, or fiend, and look the part
I dont think the scam would work if you dont pretend its a normal warhorse
ahh yes lvl 5 is when it gets lvl 2 spell slots
also the scam would blow up in your face at some point
ah wel suits an oath breaker just fine XD
Yeah, definitely
If someone's rich enough to purchase a phantom horse, they're probably rich enough to hire mercenaries
i asume find steed would just look like a regulaur warhorse if i make it so ?
Huh, 24 find steed got funky. Cool. Ask your DM, rudolfhertz.
I love 2024 find steed
i had a fun moment at the last dnd session where a ranger got a big of tricks and wanted to sell of a summon to a butcher for some free gold
im like wait i can do that to
You can do that until the butcher realizes they've been swindled I suppose.
Find steed go brrr
kinda hoping to encounter a Wight or a wil o wisp as a oath breaker early in in the next fiew sessions
il be so happy with a wil o wisp pet
boost my save dc as high as posible
Anyone have answer 👀
Who will regain the wish?
Monkey paw'd by the DM
Since it's not one of the defined uses of Wish, it's up to the DM.
First wizard casted wish and lost it because stress, second wizard want to wish the first wizard to remove stress entirely and be able to cast wish again like of stress never happened
Who's campaign has even made it to 20th?
Ah good to know
4 year ongoing campaign and we are level 13 :3
What's the most desperate thing you guys have done to get out of a situation?
fleeing
Divine intervention
Make deal
Used an invis potion and just ran
Time for my flight
I sure hope there wont be any random encounters
merry Christmas all!
Blowing myself up to take down a Balor most recently. uhh...
Jumped up onto the arm of this ice construct thing in an effort to go after its head while simultaneously avoiding its devastating likely one-shot attack. Keeping the attention of some dangerous animals to distract them so the rest of the party can get away, including jumping down an ice slide to avoid getting chomped. (these ones are all from the same campaign)
did it work
oh yeah, all three of them worked.
My character died to the Balor's explode-on-death, but it was totally worth it
perma death?
You went off with a bang, huh? What an explosive ending.
We're only level... 6? or maybe 7 at the time. So we collectively took down a CR19 baddie with my sacrifice. I basically Gandalf'd. lol
my next character to be introduced is gonna fill the same niche but in a different style: I'm playing an Arcana Cleric rather than a wizard :3
Are they a relative of this dead character and will "avenge his kin"?
Nah. She's an inquisitor for the god of magic, and... assuming that I'm allowed to have a bit more memory than the rest of the party on introduction... is specifically going after the sorcerer-king that set us into this dungeon castle to begin with
She's doing it for the love of the game "You have abused your magic and so I am come to remove it from you."
that is amazing
I love playing Annabelle. One of my few "active clerics" in that they are explicitly tasked with going out in the world, rather than moving around just to serve people.
Like, my forge clerics typically are just wanderers who can defend themselves, but offer their services to villages as they roam as blacksmiths.
Merry christmas
Became a bomb
I didn’t make it. Probably because I exploded
Twice
Ah, "The Gale" as they say
I was the Gale before Gale
is it just me or is Hypnotic Pattern just an objectively better spell than Confusion despite being lower level
Yes it is
Confusion is a flavor spell
well that sucks
considering a 4th level spell is pretty powerful late game thing for the average DnD campaign
Anyone know how a level 5 Eberron Artillerist can inflict the incapacitated condition
that's kinda stupid
anaesthesia
I need to use it in combat
syringe with anaesthesia
my opponent is a druid who can wild shape into a dire wolf with 50ft walking speed
gas chambered rifle which fires syringe with anaesthesia
ok but is there a spell - in case I can't get anaesthesia
What spell supersedes Yolande’s?
Spirit guardians
incapacitation is a pretty powerful condition reserved for spells like Hypnotic Pattern and Sleep
Or if you're a druid, conjure woodland beings
i dont believe artificers get those
Isn’t that a cleric spell, not a wizard spell?
what this druid would do is
cast moonbeam -> wildshape -> run away -> control moonbeam and have a large pool of HP
It is, but it doesn't stop it from being a better spell lol
I've managed to build an artificer which can do ~31 - 35 dmg avg per turn
counterspell the moonbeam AFTER the druid wildshapes
they wont be able to recast a spell, and reverting back to their human form wastes the wildshape
Well yeah but it can’t be superseded because there’s no situation where you need to pick one or the other
they cast moonbeam first and then wildshape using bonus action into a direwolf - also I don't think artificers have counterspell at level 5
aquire it externally somehow
im sorry if ur question is simply "how can my level 5 artillerist artificer beat a level 5 moon druid in 1v1 fight" the answer is they can't
Mr incredible: Better spell is better spell
Ah yes, there's your problem. Trying to do pvp in dnd
good point - sad shit is magic items are rare in this campaign ;-;
Not a system for PvP I feel
pvp is fun but it sure as hell isn't balanced and you have to just be happy with the outcome
I don't feel the same lol
No need to feel that, its explicitly not made for that
Then my feeling is correct ig
Well sometimes the DM uses PC class templates for strong bosses like once there was an optional fight for the party with what I can only guess to be at least a level 5 trickster domain cleric
not level 5 - level 10
I do weird things with blocks
that's fair but then it would be your entire party ganging up on 1 boss built like a PC class
yea well our party was level 2 to 4 at that time of 4 people of which 1 PC was absolutely incompetent
Always got one person with mostly odd scores
Bro had a decent build but he ended up RP'ing in the middle of combat
He would do that
I am pretty sure his char was like a scared as char (think zenitsu from demon slayer) but man you don't have to intentionally fall down
I think combat takes enough time as it is without someone tryna do stuff
He just fell prone to add flavor or something - shit made me mad
As long as it doesn't drag put their turn, rp in combat can be fun.
Well it ended with them dropping to 0 HP and the enemy himself having to heal him
I am pretty sure the DM just didn't want to kill one of us this early so he just had the enemy heal him
But dropping to the deck, that's got mechanical effect, impacts your effectiveness. Sure, if you're shooting from behind a barricade and want to get total cover, it makes sense, but that's not the feel I'm getting here.
yea hence the incompetency
Well, the behaviour you reward is the behaviour you encourage.
I mean he quit now so idc - but man I would have left him to die if it were up to me
Games got consequences
That might have been more interesting for everyone. A character dying because of what you did means what you did mattered.
I am gonna find a way to beat the druid now - I did discover moonbeam has conc and I can force 2 saving throws in 1 turn
so maybe I just endure the moonbeam and try to ruin the conc
Won’t they just cast it again then?
they would have to turn back into human - cast it - and then wildshape again
I feel like that just puts you back to square one tho
Are you running the 2014 version?
A straight fight doesn't sound like a good plan. What if you thought like a villain, gave them something else to worry about?
2024
then no, save is only once per turn
we sometimes run PVP battles amongst ourselves when no GMs are around to do any sessions so it won't work but in an organic fight I would win by just using the environment
very little for you to do then
artillerist is not a class designed to dish out damage against a single opponent
it's like trying to beat an oath of vengeance paladin with a swords bard
very little indeed
I am pretty sure a tournament is gonna happen soon (it's a westmarch and we basically decided to do a tournament arc b/w all the PCs)
I could try to do something their
Are tournament preps allowed
as in prep time? ofc? access to the battleground beforehand? idk I will have to ask the DM but most likely no and even if it is it would be against the tournament rules
Yeah prep time, and what level does this take place
My char would be level 5 by then (currently level 3)
theirs might hit 6 or stay at 5 - honestly the only real threat I am pretty sure I can just gun down most other casters because I have the tough feat and very high con
martials are a joke even with the new weapon mastery
Are you a ranged combatant?
yes
A full caster too? Nice
no half-caster
artellerist artificer
Oh I see, beware of Warlocks and Wizards then
Warlocks I can see - but given how all classes can just swap spells at long rest I doubt wizard class will see much use
These days dwarves wives won't clean the coal dust out of your beard or give your beard a trim when it gets singed when detonating rocks.
Share if you still proudly groom miners
That sure is a sentence
It indeed is
both
Boldest part about it is to assume that only wives do the beard grooming.
Imma cast modify memory and forget I read that
Why are you dunderheads shocked over wholesome matrimony
I’ve never played a dwarf, ever
I really should try one
-# And dwarven toughness won’t hurt hehe
Are they good at all?
Good? Good at what?
Hold on I'm forgetting an english word
Hill dwarves are really meta
Species generally are on pretty equal footing when compared to the impact that classes have.
That's alright, there's a lot of those.
the only species I've read up on are Dragonborns and Changelings, primarily because my first character is a changeling
I can only speak for 2024 dwarf, but they’re pretty good
Temporary tremorsense, free extra HP, poison resistance
think if I use shapechanger to look like someone's relative, then use my bard's +8 persuasion I could make them do anything? or nah?
That does sound good
What's the best class to use the mountaindwarf medium armor profiency with?
Persuasion isn't mind control, so nah
Darn, maybe if I get them to believe that I'm actually their relative and use deception 🤔
Probably not. If I were the DM in this case I’d just give advantage on the roll
Anything that doesn’t have medium armour proficiency
I want my character to be cartoonishly evil
I'd definitely make sure the other players and the DM are ok with that.
definitely, I've had them check my character sheet and they seem to be okay with the idea
There is a general assumption that you aren't evil, because d&d is mostly about heroics.
Are they a newish DM?
Wizard can conjure full cover if they win initiative
How?
Wall of force comes at level 10
nope, very experienced
before that I am pretty sure I can just walk around it
inb4 "minor illusion" (doesn't work)
minor illusion is an illusion I could just shoot through it
Alright, then sounds good to me! I hope you have fun with that character, but always keep the fun of others in the party in mind as well!
Yeah, and the rest of the party aren't really that heroic either
if I remember, one guy is schizophrenic
Rope Trick, its invisible and while they are inside it technically counts as "from another plane"
They just shoot cantrips from inside
attacks / spells can't pass into or out of it
so they can't have a sanctuary and attack from it
given how many creatures it can hold
and how they are a sitting duck - I can just stand around for 1 hour waiting for them to come out or rush in - (just stand around waiting for them to come out tbh)
at max they have like 6 to 8 hours of rope trick if they spend all of their spell slots on it
Just peek out and then return back
the way my offense system is set up - I need to be standing at 1 spot still to be able to deliver
6d8 + 1d6 + 5 dmg per turn
(they can also just pull the rope in)
Yes but the space remains there and it is invisible but my char can memorize the location
so they just stand around waiting for the wizard to come out after an hour or like 8 hours
none the less - that is a temporary solution
Has anyone else had problems with being able to post in the looking-for channels?
Have you used the commands in #find-a-game ?
It's working now. Discord must have been lagging.
Assuming monoclassing, Sorcerer
Wizard is nice too
I can tell you the worst: monk
Dwarf Monks sound funnier than they should be
Watch those stubby legs kick someone really hard
Drunken master dwarf monk
Good one
Sounds like a misremembering to me
Christmass party with family
Time to sit on the couch the entire night reading DND wiki
Do you think questioning rulings after the session is problematic player behaviour?
Depends on the spirit of the questioning
I know that’s a little unhelpful but I think there’s a difference between constructive feedback on rulings and complaining about it in bad faith
No. If a DM thinks you reminding them of a rule, in a respectable way, after session, is problematic, Id think a few things of said dm.
But it depends on how it was brought up and how it was talked about. If it was done in a disrespectful or inconsiderate way, the questioning wasn't the issue, the player is.
I see.
How would you bring up, for example, that your gnome should have gotten a saving throw against being knocked prone too?
I've got to agree with horizon, that is probably the best way to go about it
though I suppose it's based on the condition of how he got knocked prone
Well you show them the feature allowing such a thing, and any rule tied to it, asking if it would apply, thatd be a good way to start.
But keep in mind, dms word is law in campaigns.
Getting attacked by a Wolf.
it might just be me but I'd just have that be an attack roll if he got pounced
Okay.
Lemme check, but if they are just following the statblock, should be fine.
Yep in 2014 it was a dc11 str save or be knocked prone on hit, in 2024 it is automatically applied if medium or smaller on hit.
So if you are playing 2024 rules, and made no save on being hit to be knocked prone, that makes sense.
ngl it would be interesting if they had a counter for it where if the attack failed, the character could react to it by throwing the wolf off
Lots of on hit no save conditions in the 2024 MM
is there any dm's i can ask an opinion for??
What is it?

Favorite magic items? I personally enjoy Ythryn Mythallar from Icewind.
Either the Fochlucan Bandore or the Cartographer's Mapcase for the items I've used in character the most and to the best effect.
Cloak of billowing
Longsword flametongue
Absolutely huge respect for a magic item that does absolutely nothing except for billow like it’s in the wind all the time
Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
LONGSWORD FLAMETONGUE
Maybe it's magical fire...
Scroll of tarrasque summoning
Is Depression considered to be a form of Indefinite Madness when considered by Greater Restoration?
I don't see any wording in Greater Restoration that discusses anything even close to that.
ah, it's in the curing Madness section.
you could maybe put that under "46–50 “I find it hard to care about anything that goes on around me.”"
but my question now becomes why are you wanting to shoehorn something so complex into that table? Are you trying to cure a PC of a way they have decided to play?
Hey random question but how do u guys flavor psionics on your character? Like through the feats or subclasses, because I play a level 4 psi warrior rn and enjoy but I’m always unsure if I’m describing things right like
Is purple spectral light wrapping a blade for psi empowered strike for instance something sounds fitting?
If anyone could just talk abt what they’ve done for psionic stuff that’d be helpful!
do you know Sue from The fantastic 4?
Some stuff like that
How would you write the distinction between Manes as an individual creature and Manes as the group of creatures, since they're written the same
