"Im going to cast haste on the enemy"
"Go on artificer, punch me in the face now"
Enemy got his turn lost.
@lyric idol @prisma mason
Something else worth noting about my team composition... we have a Fighter that has the Crusher feat. So in the rare, but still possible chance that he gets a critical hit on a big enemy... I then make every attack roll until his next turn with advantage
Why he fell for it I will never understand
I personally don't like relying on crits myself but shoot go for it.
Sounds like if anyone crits its gonna be absolute hell for the enemy
I was saying it ain't realistic to expect WotC to change DnD into Path of Exile where you just build a class from a giant endless skill Yggdrasil
The dopamine rush after seeing how you landed 4 critics in one turn might be illegal.
After that you need a recovery, a cleaning.
Crack would be healthier
If this were rick n morty they'd capture that feeling and make it into chocolate wafers or something.
Well I have an idea
They did it already, in an episode of the rick city and another with the pasta.
Ik thats where I got the idea.
Yep. You increase your chances of a critical, especially at 19, with advantage rolls.
The fact that they literally did this in the show completes this
but again, is a chance. That is a problem in most scenarios
True, but the chances increase dramatically
I wouldn't say...Dramatically
I'm not going to rely on crits, per se... I do solid damage without it, but in the offchance our Fighter crits a bulky enemy with bludgeoning damage, I could have (at level 11) 6 attacks + advantage + double crit chance + Lucky for optional rerolls + Hunter's Mark + Sharpshooter + Piercer for more crit dice
Combine all that with a Hunting Rifle + Gunner to remove the Loading penalty...
And let's just say you will need to pull up an app for this. Because there won't be enough d10s to do it manually
the problem i have is, idk if normally you can stack some chances. If you mange to drop the critic dice to 15, then would make you into a lethal death machine
Idk I think its fun to use my bonus action to tell my fighter to bonk away.
Lets be real. If you attack 3 times before getting champion, the chance to crit is 3/60 chance. When you hit champion, it becomes 1/10 which is significantly better.
Nah lowest you can get is 18
Yeah. I mean they could have found a reason to lower it to 17, but they had to draw the line somewhere.
As a level 18 champion iirc
In 3.5e martials could crit on like 10s and above at high levels
15th level is 18 crit
which is 3/20 chance. or 15% chance to crit with every attack.
Which is better then a 5% chance.
Yup
Do I ever feel like my luck is ever on my side enough to choose a class that relies on luck like that even if it improves my odds? No. But if ya feel comfortable then shoot.
Think of it like this. Your odds of getting a crit on an advantage is roughly 10% (39/400)
With Improved Critical lowering it to 19 or 20, the odds shift to 81/100, or 19%
39/400?
Don't champions crit on 18 at lvl 18 in 2014?
I feel like a math teacher. Your answer is correct but the method to get there has me baffled.
He's multiclassing 6 levels fighter so he doesn't get there.
Can play elf and roll the 3 dice with elven accuracy
Then 1-(19/20)^3
Chance of not rolling a 20 within 2 rolls is (19/20)^2, or 361/400, so (400/400) - (361/400) = 39/400
A 1/20 chance to crit
The chance that neither dice is a 20 is 19²/20², or 361/400
400 - 361 is 39, thus your chance to crit with a 5% chance is 39/400
1141/8000
I'm a human
Hi a human, I’m Nugget
Yeah my mind ain't mathing today. I see numbers but they don't mean anything to me.
yep, at the end of the day is numbers. Still champion have access to more fighting styles and the lvl 20 (even if you dont reach it is important to remark it) make you an giga hard entity to kill. More if we add ally healing or items
Healing cleric plus levels into bard and chef feet
It's cool. I'm not a math teacher, I just love actual math like probability
I need to know this stuff to comprehend just how terribly Lady Luck screws me over
Huh, I’ve never thought to format advantage probability like that. I’ve always done (19/20)^2
Exactly how I did it lmao
yep, this spell that make you heal in area around you and some counterspell or protection against instant death and your fighter is a monster.
Remember I get 2 extra attacks at level 11 as well
That's a 27% chance to crit. And by that point, a Sharpshooter Piercer crit with a hunting rifle in THIS campaign will deal a bare minimum of 42 + modifer piercing damage
That's just how my brain works. Doing calculations like that are faster when broken down into easier steps. Like 25 × 11 can easily be done by doing 250 + 25
I calculate same way as you, I just format in text as (19/20)^2 cuz it’s faster
(For me, cuz that’s what I do when I write too)
** eating popcorn watching how people use statistics**🍿
i kinda get it, i made a Ranger sharpshooter in a campaign i am. Each shoot was lethal
Oh no yeah, totally agree with you on that. I try to avoid doing manual large number multiplication in general so I just never applied it to that area 🙂
Except a boss that my party abandoned me against it
But against that last enemy i dealt all the damage against it, ended up down and "rescued". I will hold that against them for some time
Wait a minute... question
Just so I understand this, if you have the Lucky feat
You can roll the additional d20, then choose whether you will actually use the new dice and luck point
"Before the outcome is determined"
Right?
I ain't a numbers person but I will say that I will always prefer utility and CC abilities over a chance of more damage any day of the week.
@glass granite Did I get this right?
yes, what about it?
. . .
oh, i used one only time the sharpshooter feat feature and missed the shoot, first shot missed
we use 2014 but yeah, can use it for more damage, still i reserve the lucky for important hits and dodges
Call it sharp missing
That means that if I burned action surge and was willing to spend a Lucky Dice to get AT LEAST ONE crit, I have a 72% crit chance
i wasnt that sharp in that moment, still have resentment to the party. But the arti in that party is part of my mission
Bro is thirsty for the critic, what is that important that you need to critic and kill it down?
God!?
Still dont waste that much resources unless is a giga needed critic.
Fun fact: Lucky points was originally from AD&D Conan's Unchained from the 1980's as a character ability in his setting
- Homebrew rule in the campaign is Max damage on crit. Could you imagine the type of damage I could churn out with Sharpshooter, Hunting Rifle, and Piercer alone??
- I am a certified critical hit addict. If you went into my DMs and asked me about my favorite build in Fallout: New Vegas, you would understand (TLDR: brain gives me happy chemicals from doing enough damage to kill someone 230+ times over)
- It would make for some awesome dialogue when you know you're about to lay waste to someone/some people
"Good news for you... I have a bullet with your name on it. Bad news for you... I forgot which one it was, so I'm going to keep firing at you until we find out which one it is. Shall we?"
If you want to max the crit, why not do a Sorcadin? Hold person means paralysis which means autocrit, plus you have more spell slots for smite
At this point you should've been a artificer/fighter multiclass or something. Artillerist with that quote right there.
Alternatively just get a teammate to cast hold person
I just imagined a meme scene from the beauty and the beast were this beauty guy spam shooting a person with a musket
If it was 2014, Sorcerer with twin spell would have this guys mind blown.
8 shoots fighter with a musket would be funny
I mean gunslinger fighter is right there.
No, that quote would be for a one man firing squad (which would be pretty dang awesome as an alias). If you wanted a quote for that, that would be the quote I'm pulling up right now
With a musket, a one shot weapon, think that one turn is 6 seconds so the person loaded 3 shoots and shooted 3 times in 6 sec and then action surge and same thing but 4 reloads and 4 shoots
Yeah I'd buy a revolver.
"But again... I don't care about what it's DESIGNED to do, I care about about what it CAN do. I can gamble away all my personal safety at close quarters so I can triple up on items specifically to put stadium sized craters into the earth."
-Russian Badger
Safety is an option. An option I dont succumb too. I intend to keep for sticks of dynamite on my character so when I magic surge and roll reincarnate I absolutely will use myself as the bomb and bomb rush the enemy.
Not really. I plan to get a firearm at about level 6-8. By then, I will already have Gunner, which means no Loading trait/penalty
Buy a revolver. No need for feat.
Counterpoint: d8 < d10
Counterpoint 2: I get to headcanon it is a lever action
Counterpoint: Buy a lever action.
1 point diff
or get bald
Lever actions aren't available, from what it seems like
Besides, even if they don't exist there, it would be fun to pretend like it is one. I mean, come on... 3/6 inhumanly accurate bullets in 6 seconds?
Wdym by this?
my ally fighter (another player) got a gun and i fear he commit arson with it.
i went to the bathroom in a moment of the session while they were talking with a shopkeeper and when i came back we were all inside of some cells. It seems they got a heat up argument and they tried to punch him.
Luckily the people got at night hypnotized by some harpy's singing that was our objective in the mission, those harpys. We escaped and went behind them
I cant even go to pee without them putting our butts in jail 🥀
Perhaps so, yeah. But there are 2 things you have to remember for here
- Dice from critical hits are guaranteed to be max damage for this campaign
So while the damage normally isn't too big of a difference, d10s means that my critical damage without modifiers go from 24 to 30 - The way my character is built means that I still do high piercing damage, even if the attack doesn't crit
Uhhh... how can you commit arson with a firearm?
idk, he didnt had it until we managed to take care of the harpys
I’m planning on running a Christmas themed 2 shot or something, and need villain ideas, current top contenders are Mariah Carey(but evil), something Halloween themed and uhh that’s bout it, pls help
(Not krampus)
Odin who is tryna steal Santa's mantle
@fossil hollow All this to say that if I could make the choice between the 2, hunting rifle is more appealing. Even though I am a sucker for high damage crits, I still very much enjoy roleplay factors. It makes a hunting rifle more appealing while having good uses (besides, having a revolver means everyone will think you're just a cowboy)
Mariah Carey(but evil)
Thats hilarious
yeah buddy.... copy and paste this in #looking-for-dm
do it before someone delete it
I'm saying that arson is the criminal act of deliberately setting fire to property
yeah you are 4 people should be easy peasey to find a DM in the LFG channels
the shopkeeper were selling bombs and that stuff, i wanted to buy the recipe for his bombs so i can make some in the base. They were almost making us into being criminals, Its wild im hte sanest of that party...
Yeah, I think Mariah Carey finally passed the strength check to be unfrozen (she gets frozen again after Christmas)
Anyways, that's more or less my plans for my character
I tried copying it into there, don’t know if I did it right 😅😅😅
I get to do so much piercing damage in a quick burst while also having good options to help in other places
picture this: four rogue tortles
Oh. And did I mention that I managed to get my hands on a silvered shortsword in case of piercing resistance/immunity?
Hehehe, sharp metal stick
check in #dnd-newcomers if you need help in that
Ooh, I wonder if I can take the silver from it and find a way to convert it into ammunition...
Newcomer frequented here, put that information into the set layout that the form gives you
Or at least, find a way to have a wizard enchant ammunition to help it overcome resistances and immunities
You’ll have to ask your DM
its nice to have many tools. I plan to add for second fighting style throwing weapons so i have:
Sword//shield
Heavy crossbow with repeating shoot
Daggers that i plan to coat in poison and throw
Molotovs for AOE damage and fire in case that physical dont work
i didnt made any molotov yet or fire bomb, but i plan to after we finish this last mission that we are in.
I suppose we'll get there when we get there
Indeed
But yeah. TLDR: my brain will give me happy chemicals from the beeg numbers I make
Zhentarim Tactics + Riposte + Sentinel is Awesome.
You hit me? I hit you. You miss me? I hit you. You go after my friends? I hit you.
i like big numbers too, for now playing fighter and ranger let me do it. Someday i might do magic big numbers
Hey yall, I am looking to see if anyone has recommendations for a weapon for my new character? She is a blind fairy, using the blind fighting style and she is a Drakewarden Ranger.
2014 or 2024 rules?
Also having a blind character is rough
Give her a funny oversized revolver and each time she shoot she got 5ft back
- Drake will kind of be my eyes, so to speak
Love this
A super long bee stinger (rapier)
a whip would be funny cause then you could flavor the crack of the whip as helping you echolocate
Hey, this is actually a solid idea
Ooh, that’s interesting. I like that a lot.
Your stealth would be nonexistent, but hey. One problem at a time
Do you have a plan around needing to see for the purposes of some ranger spells?
I guessed he could like, saw the things in other way around him for being blind. Like some magic sight or essence sight
The telepathic nature of the drake. I’ll usually be riding or being carried by it, so I have “line of sight”
I mean like mechanically, certain spell require you to see the target
Or target area
i think the GM is being loose with it in this case, if i had to guess
First session: A god gave you all a gift for gaining your trust, every one of you all are restored by a problem or disease (now isnt blind anymore)
If they are then that’s fine, if not you’d need some way to see, such as via Find Familiar
i dunno if "curing" the blindness is exactly gonna support the character fantasy?
not to speek for lordraccoon but it sounds like they want blindess to be part of the characters identity
true, but depend of how they manage the "blindness" in general.
if they make some Toph from avatar i would love it
i just know that if i specifically made a paralyzed character in a wheelchair and the GM tried to "cure" it episode 1 i'd be so mad
The character is blind, thats a very big part of their character. They got blinded by the drakes acid, and the drake is repaying a debt.
would even add it like a balance "your character is blind but can sense the vibrations around him and use it for know the intention of the enemies" +3 initiative
we got two raccoons now?
She was my main inspiration for the character
turns out there may be more than just a few raccoons in the world, yeah
A paralyzed character that use a living armor for moving would be peak honestly. That is a way to make it work instead of... wheelchair but i get your point in that other thing
Basically all armorer artificers.
the galactic baseballer has more rivals... hows the trash bin economy?
Is your DM willing to homebrew the Drake to allow you to perceive through its senses to get around the sight requirement for your spells that need it?
Just on a mechanical level, not necessarily a narrative one
I gain a telepathic connection to the drake.
That’s not the same as sharing sight
Yep or an special item that the character have but cant be unequipped and replaced unless it attune and spend X resources//time on it.
Any Dispel magic would paralyze you and any detect magic would have advantage against you
Nor is it the same as being able to see a creature/target location for the purposes of spells
The drake will transmit “pictures” of the battlefield to me, essentially what they are seeing at that particular moment
For example, Hunter’s Mark specifies it applies to “a creature you can see”
flooded, there's too much trash in the world
So then it seems your DM willing be homebrewing a bit which is fine, it takes a lot of the inconvenience of blindness out for spellcasters
I’m surprised the base Drakewarden didn’t get a full sense-share like Find Familiar does
Blind fighting style also allows me to see. “You have blind sight with a range of 10 ft. Within that range, you can effectively see anything that isn’t behind total cover even if you are blinded or in darkness.”
within 10 ft
I mean theoretically you could have it just info dump the scene of the battle to you through telepathy and you have to create an image in your mind from it
I mean more so outside of it, unless you plan to solely cast spells within 10 ft of you
not the same as seeing for the purposes of targeting
is looking at a static picture going to help you hit the enemy 30 ft away
I mean, do I really need to cast spells outside of 10ft? If I can only perceive the world as 10ft around me in any direction, all I would know is that, blind to everything else
range exists
you also dont fireball within 10 ft of yourself... thats kamikaze
tbf do rangers get fireball
fair nough
I just noticed Brutal Strike push (barbarian feature) doesn’t have a size limit unlike the Push mastery and Push Maneuver (Battlemaster)
also, being blind means attacks against you have advantage i you cant see them...
There’s quite a few stellar AoE spells for Ranger that you’d hit yourself with
Do they? From what?
Oh wait I just reread the message
no i was asking
cause i'm pretty certain they don't
Blind sense
spike growth entangle, yadda yadda
limited to 10 ft. again. people can exist and attack you from farther
Attacks from further than 10 ft away
Also yeah Ranger actually gets more AOEs from their base class compared to the other two Half casters (base class)
Fairy. I can fly. 10ft above the field, cast an aoe
still missing the point
not d&d... but ttrpg.
I've got my maid character's carry capacity up to about 5 and a half tons, at a light load.
Thats fair. I would not expect an arrow to hit me in the spleen. Ranged attacks would have advantage
i think we've already established that the GM is playing a loose game with how this blindness works, from what i can tell
Ofc not
All I know at the moment is that I am allowed to “see” through the drake. Still will be very blind.
definetly worth a convo with your GM, then. there's a lot of implications that can come up when playing with blindness
would be good to know ahead of time how y'all wanna play it out
Yeah, I plan on having a detailed session 0 with him
I believe there are specific channels on this server for folks looking for games. 🙂
This is getting a little too common
new to the server?
@golden latch we ask that people not solicit for games outside out looking for channels.. please check out #find-a-game to see how those channels work. You can respond to threads in #looking-for-players to get started.
Any posts outside those channels trying to get games will be removed.
Oh im so sorry
Don't be sorry! I hope someone mentions the specific channels. 🙂
It's hard to find a game. I play 3.5e, and it's even more challenging than trying to find a 5e game.
This is so confusing XD
Im not used to such a complex server.
Its really cool tho.
Interesting
Hi so sorry, I’m Nugget
I have a rooster named Nugget.
???
Why are you sorry?
Hi so sorry, I am Numi!
Anyways, i wish i cad copied the text i sendt.
Its a bit annoying to have to re write it, but oh well, thats on me, mb XD
Hi
I have a nugget named rooster
A Rooster Nugget?!?!
My long lost cousin?!
Non-sequitur: But when the raccoon PFPs and the frog PFPs finally clash, I don’t know which side I’ll be on.
For me it's the raccoon. Frogs are explosive breeders, the death of one is ecologically less significant
leave it to steve to fabricate conflict between groups to keep us divided 😔
Join my side, we have popcorn 🍿
Better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war. 😩
Samwise Gamgee might disagree
besides we all know the real enemy is cat PfPs
Romance of the three kingdoms.
i don't think my pfp counts as a cat pfp 🤔 (it's armor king from Tekken, who has a jaguar mask iirc)
....right?
Close enough, release the popcorn
I want popcorn.
alright fine who am i fighting? 🗡
let's veer back towards the topic of the channel (D&D) and away from avatar wars please
Very well
so what animal fits what class the best
right right, anyways. battle master fighter or psi warrior fighter? which y'all like more?
Battle master
There’s a 3rd party cat species for 5E called Felis. They’re more like house cats than cat people. We use it and it’s really dope.
Any similar 3rd party for raccoon or possum or frog people? https://imgur.com/gallery/d-d-felis-race-homebrew-updated-GzuvdIM
grung of course is good.
I just like the manoeuvres (except for the fact I can never spell manoeuvres)
Rogue is something cat like, barb I can imagine being dragon or a bull
I get dog vibes from fighter
either that or paladins
Golden retrievers for paladins seem very fitting yeah
Oathbreaker Golden Retriever. 😭
I believe Humblewood has a racoon based species..
Is there anywhere here I can post a picture? I wanna see what other DM's might think of a homebrew stat block
You can use a reputable file hosting service and link to your image statblock that way and share it in #homebrew
Can you give me a rec for a reputable service? I think I only know tiny pic
Google Drive? OneDrive? Pretty reputable.
Cool thanks !
Also reputable choices
can probably also direct link it from another discord server
Thank you
I usually will link from another page but on the same discord server lol wish homebrew let us post images but what can you do
I'd be careful with this as the links may end up getting blocked and your account possibly banned for suspicious links
not all Discord servers are reputable lol
can i test something?
Let's not
So uhh
Where would someone start to get experience as a DM?
By DMing?
Just... Just keep DMing to gain experience. It seems obvious. Which means that I am probably misunderstanding the question
Okay. How can I find my first game to DM?
You could start with a couple one shots, get some of your friends and run small things
Get players and start running?
Easiest way would be to read through a pre-made module, and then try to find some players
Running the game. Not literally running
Okay. Where can I find pre-made modules?
Sprint!
?tag ddb claim
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
^ Free stuff you can claim on DnDBeyond
By buying them or downloading free ones
Thank you!
DMsGuild also has free and pay what you want options
Okay. Where can I find that?
If internet search isn't working for you, you can find it here: https://www.dmsguild.com/
Thanks!
I'm currently running The Fortress of the Yuan-ti, which you can pick up at archive.org; however, you'd have to convert it to 5e.
wha goin on? :3
Hellooo everyone!
that uhhh
that is a pfp
Its a pig
of all the pfps every used it's
it's one of em
This is odd people seem to not like my pfp
Anyway back to D&D...
i cant claim the stuff that goes to the cart for $0
it asks me a for my telepohone number, but refuses to accept the telephone number
For DnDBeyond?
Did you include the region code? e.g. US is +1
yes
Huh weird
worked on a second refresh
did we hear about any other releases
I don't think anything else has been announced yet
but I suspect things are in the works
do you need some more adventures?
im not counting the compilation books or the variose setting guides in that
I got my DND module, Escape From Phlan. Time to study up
what about quests of the infinite staircase?
as i have not ran anything in the MTG setting books, keys, radiant citadel or tales from the yawning portal as campaigns
oh ic
cover to cover, some chapters ran twice
If I got an adventure published, you said yes to running it, right?
do you wanna do a trial run of my adventure?
Look for some fun 3PP adventures, though I don't know any that would exactly match your style, as a lot of the ones I'm more familiar with are pretty heavily narratively-focused.
they dont print them and ship those here
tamms, last thing i need you doing is giving reccomendations to my dm
whats 3pp?
I feel like DriveThruRPG definitely isn't just stuck to the US.
i aint paying import tarrifs
whats drivethrurpg?
Website, I believe.
i got you a very free adventure that is technically drafts but very much a workable mega dungeon
You finished it?
keep at it Enid
DMsGuild is a online storefront run by the same folks behind DriveThruRPG and Roll20 and Demiplane (yes they own that too) - DMsGuild is officially licensed to sell D&D products (legacy books) and has a special license that allows folks to create and sell D&D materials that allow them to use more than just the SRD under the DMsGuild license.
I'm guessing that would be taken care of on the shipping portion, methinks.
yeah, none of what is on there is worth paying all those extra fees for
In the same sense that D&D books would be hit by import tariffs.
im kind of prickly about what i buy, if they arent putting them on store shelfs here where i can go and grab them i am not going to buy it, and i dont buy pdfs
i get staff discount at the shop i work at running games
Fair enough, though there's definitely worlds of stuff that can be found, especially considering that it's not like WotC employees materialize out of nowhere.
do i need the entire encounter and layout done for you consider the adventure?
they tend to be burned
or dropped
an idea is just that untill you are finished working on it
im of the opinion that if something is not easaly accessable, its their loss not mine.
I mean...all of that stuff is easily accessible.
guys i finally found my back story for my half-goblin rogue/sorcerer, their parents were originally adventurers in the same party
i cant go buy a copy off the shelf, so it sure insent
Do you like dming as your job
riddle me this dndbeyond
i have 2 pouches in my entire inventory, no coinage, no other items. nothing, zilch, nada
Weight should be 2 lbs. but it claims 7...?
It's arguably more easily accessible, in the sense that you can likely find a nice print shop to make it for you on your own time.
the ma majorty of my games i run unplugged away from a computer, im not gonna pay import tarrifs, or for local printing
the last time i got a quote it was like 120 bucks to try and print an rpg book pdf
Depending on pages, not entirely unsurprising; that's why mass printings are so important.
exactly, and if they dont find my market to be worthwild, their loss
How do I make the mega dungeon interesting towards the end?
I'd acknowledge that it's a loss to you too, considering how much stuff you'd be losing out on.
Treasure.
Hello
(From what I've seen on Canadian book tariffs, it's gonna hit the consumer regardless, it seems.)
By breaking the rules
With megadungeons, normally you have been through a lot of normal encounters. The rules have been followed
Yeah set up like the dungeon has very specific rules on how it works, then the finally is wildly different
But the last encounters? The final thing? Let it break the established rules
the finale? ooooooh! i have an idea for the BBEG of the mega dungeon!
Maybe the lowest part is the corpse of a dead god with its mouth open and you need to enter through it to enter the necrotic dreams of that god!
Sorry, I have been playing a bit of a... Certain game.
Which I shall not name. For it is an evil thing.
what do you expect out of a dnd game?
My favorites have a strong story, good tempo, high highs, and terrible-feeling lows, along with the feeling that the PCs are just "there" and not amazingly special in the ways that they sometimes appear to be currently.
In other words: If the game is telling me I did a good job, I tend to lose my sense of immersion because I think the PCs should ideally be intrinstically motivated to complete their goals.
So I just realized something about Sorcerers is that their meta magic works with Magic items.
yes
For me a good DnD Game one that elicits an emotional response from the players.
I expect the frickin' players to get along with one another. mutters.
oh, learn something new today
Could I tell you guys about something mildly concerning that my dm did in our last session?
How one would justify multiclass to sorc?
"Oh look, it seems that some ancestor of mine was a caster and now i have powers"
Sure. I'm up for some drama I'm not involved in.
Some people are late bloomers.
They awaken to their inherent magical power after some sort of realization
whats the subclass
Pretty much
My paladin got mind controlled and touched without his consent, but now we have a new harpy companion.
cuz bloodlines arent the only way to get sorceror powers
Fighter
ooohhhhhh, ermmm.... wild magic would be funny honestly
how do I not dm a mega dungeon?
So, are you going to tell us about this 'mildy concerning' thing?
is taking his time to write, let him be
me? i dont think i was talking for a bit.
Fair.
Like, Exploding myself with that wild magic? good, i will be close to the enemies.
Regeneration, resistance to all damages
But at the same time turning into a plant or a sheep left me giga vulnerable.
Just saw one that make a F·$@!&% unicorn show up.
could easily have been your oath magic going wild after being controlled
Literally say that an unicorn show up for 1 minute bro i would giga laugh my ass off for that
Okay~ So I play this cute lil snowleopard tabaxi druid (Circle of Winter~) named Murua. Murua is non-binary but not in the typical modern sense of not aligning with either gender. Murua doesn't REALLY understand gender because they were abandoned as basically a baby, and lived most of their life alone.
So Murua responds to like any pronouns and doesn't take offense to any of them because they're just like vibing ya know, and they have a very silly personality
Now the issue...
We had a shopping episode, and I mentioned I had a list of some stuff I wanted to buy, but it was mostly stuff for my partymates (I've been low-key carrying like every combat scenario so I'm tryna buff em up)
My DM was like "Oh, I got this one just for you." and he called it "The King's Cloak" I haven't looked up the item since but basically as he described it, it would turn Murua from silly little non-gendered cat, into very masculine gigachad memes with an almost entirely different personality for some mildly better stats.
I declined it and we moved on, but I was just like why did he want this for me...
to be clear the gender thing with Murua is like a non-factor in actual play. It's come up MAYBE twice. if I was like being annoying about it I'd maybe get it but like @~@
Really you could become a sorcerer in ten million ways
If it's bothering you this much, just ask the DM why they thought it would be great for you.
You could stub your toe on a magical rock
that's so confrontational thoouuugh
Direct communication is the most effective kind.
Not really
Its almost like my Bard, just that he is giga dumb and wont understand the term of gender. I will have to lie how we made peace with the harpys and why we have a new harpy teenager in our team.... god gave me a ring of regeneration please
Also hold on, personality changes from a cloak?
There's nothing "confrontational" about it. You're just asking. It's inquisitive, not accusitory.
Also I was bummed out cause our shopping episode was like 90% just joke items, and I didn't get anything from my wishlist lol
which again were no items for me
just ones I thought would be neat for my party to have
A cloak that turn you into a gigachad sound funny tho, would do jokes with that. Put it in some giga cute character and saw it turn into a jojos
And if you're not able to ask them directly, then let it go. Don't let it be a concern to you. Either it bothers you enough to do something about it (talk to the DM) or it's just unhelpful clutter in your brain.
take it and sell it later. You can use it for many things
I’d just talk to your dm, or get over it
For a leader that have insecurities and want to look better, more advantage in some persuasions, etc. etc.
could i become an oathbreaker?
Or ask the to reflavor the item lol
iirc he said something along the lines of "You become completely obsessed with yourself, and think you are the sexiest thing alive."
Depend, what is your oath and why you would break it?
Anyone can
I'll probably do the latter lol
Id assume either they dont understand your vision of the gender trait and that you dont want it changed
Or they are having a laugh and are just a silly type of DM
Id recommend asking innocently about it
vengeance but idk yet.
Both reasons are no cause for conflict
it's probably nothing tbh
So let it go. 🙂
A wild child who doesnt get genderroles being offered an item that interacts with that imo is not sus
That’s fine, if it bothers you I’d bring it up. What’s the worst that can happen.
They screams 400 slurs at you? If they do is that rlly a game you wanna be in?
I agree, but I'm direct like that.
It's rewriting their character to be the opposite of what they are
In other scenarios this would be very sus but in this case it sounds very innocent
lel
Real
Sure but like I don’t think it was done maliciously or forced. If I was the dm idk if I’d even be aware of this issue
And it’s best to nip it in the bud. Bring it up rn so it doesn’t happen AGAIN later
But the next time might be worse who knows
Yeah that's why I was kinda saying if it does happen again yeah
Oh the other thing with it is he said the change it causes would be permanent (I assume it'd be like a curse removal sort of thing) and I think he genuinely thought at the time I'd be like 100% down for being gigachad meme but I don't know why lol
What is "gigachad meme"?
Its being amused by hypermasculinity
Make it into a moment:
when you saw the entity you want to take revenge. You sense how something in you snap then you are starting (insert some offensive action, extra points for chocking) you sense how the divine power inside of you start corrupting by the anger and resentment until the life of that entity wipe off from his eyes and you can sense the darkness surrounding you.
Congratulations, you became an oathbreaker
Think gaston from that disney movie
Also I might try doing a dungeon generator and then running through the dungeon solo and see how it goes
oooh i love that
this one
In this case, strong jawline, musculature, and EGO
Johnny bravo
Yeee
Maybe they suggested it facetiously?
the only reason I can think of is we are in drama class and I played Dio Brando one time for a warm up lol
The only way i see this being an issue is if you actually do identify as genderqueer and the DM knows this character is an expression of that and is trying to ridicule it or force you into a gendernorm
Genderqueer? whats that?
Thanks, you get the idea. Dont just "now im an oathbreaker". Give it a reason of your class and ways.
Like an example, i am using a Fighter, champion that was a gladiator in some foreign arenas.
Justifying his class and subclass.
Anything that isnt cis
Yknow they were probably making magic items for everyone and thought of that dio impression and decided to make the magic item.
I has returned! whats the current convo?
And make it into a change, a scene.
The Fighter subclassing into Warloc
The artificer subclassing into cleric, etc. etc.
Make it epic, sad or whatever you want but make it good
IRL I'm cis, but I do generally prefer playing more femme characters
That's probably it tho
Yeah
I think for my solo dungeon run I may perhaps try a fighter dwarf :>
do you mean multiclassing?
Tho I feel like I'ma be slaughtered by traps
Dodge them? Duh
excuse me I'm trying to post in #looking for players but says i don't have permission. How do I get permission?
Real
It was an example, you can do that too with multiclassing and would be okey for me too. I mean it with the subclasses, some feats, etc. etc.
gotcha
do you guys wanna hear why my silly lil druid tabaxi is so fun mechanically though?~
The whole cat-person thing has me disinterested. I can't get over my aversion to furries.
But yes, tell us!
Get mascots, some pigs or something small, rabbits. Throw them into the dungeon and let them trigger the traps
That's what a Bag of Tricks is for.
You have there meat and they will clean the path of traps
Also not a furry guy or like Druids but let’s hear it
crates of chicken is the cheapest for your buck. And if they get flamed, you have KFC on the spot
I'd throw myself in to protect them
Did you read the information in #find-a-game?
I mean I kinda hear ya. I still haven't played a shifter or tabaxi. I wouldn't bring that to the server though ;-;
A Bag of Tricks has an assortment of animals that you pull out at random.
Survival of a bunny.
Dawg if their was like a cute pig if fight a balor
But... rabbits be good eatin'.
I love tabaxi while having zero love for furry culture. Beast races in fantasy are usually different from furry stuff
I do like eating rabbit I actually had rabbit curry not long ago
Minotaurs, owlin, tabaxi, leonin and loxodons. I love them
They remind me of furries too much.
the "my mother is a siren and my father is a minotaur" joke character is something i wont mind trying
Better than me, I’d eat the bacon with balor. CR19 creature talking about fight them 😭
Beast races always seemed gimmicky to me idk why
You would be the bacon sorry
I'd be like Gandalf
Dead?
Warforged race simply better.
Aren’t Minotaurs like unplayable due to their insane hunger for human flesh?
Ac doesn't matter if they take fall damage!
My goat machines
Their what
Dudes just love chowing down on people
Actually there's a playable PC minotaur. But it's trash and stupid
If not then idk what is a way to clean a corridor with traps.
Cant be a familiar for not being a caster (fighter)
Can pick up a monster and force him but would fight back.
A chain with a weight would break against some traps
What its great
From what i remember Minotaurs have like an insane urge to consume Human flesh
Whats so trash about minotaurs
The fact that they're playable
They too big
The playable race not the creature
Yes i mean the player race
Minotaurs shouldn’t be playable
Now monster minotaurs? love them
Why? theyre cool
So they're a Circle of Winter Druid which gives them a few cool traits. Main two that are neat are instead of Wildshaping they get this feature called "Winter Spirit" which basically gives them a Gaara Sand Shield but made of snow (mechanically just a lot of temp HP), but they also get "Slippery Magic"
However what makes Murua so fun is they carry around this giant staff that their mysterious parent left behind, and it prevents them from using things like feline agility. However this isn't a problem because big stick can whack!
They've recently acquired the feats Fury of the Frost Giant, and Frost Giant's Strike. Which when combined with a good Absorb Elements reaction and Elemental Bane Cold on the previous turn, lets Murua whack with their big stick for a minimum of 17 damage and a max of like 38. But because of all their traits and feats this attack forces the target to make a couple saves, that if they fail then they fall prone, and have their movement reduced to zero.
I wanna play one someday. I had one as paladin in my game and it was fun
I like imaging what would happen dungeoning with a minotaur in the party barely able to fit
The fact that they exist is the problem. The fact that they're cool is even worse.
Reads all this and nods like she has some kind of clue as to what you're talking about. (I only play 3.5e).
What is so bad about it?
The fact that they exist.
Had a minotaur companion one time, he was too hasty and violent. Kicked a door down and got surprise attacked by a corpse eater
Failed his attacks and then got tilted and left. We said it was decapitated
Why is them existing bad?
The TLDR of it is Murua is practically unkillable, and gets to whack people with a big stick for a lot of damage, and if someone gets whacked by big stick they are basically crippled.
Well, the manner in which they came into the world is pretty sketchy. Pasiphaë and the bull and what not.
I mean they are eternally hungry and have the urge to eat humans whenever they are around them, it’d end up with them making constant wisdom saves to resist the urge to snack on Humanoids
Not the player race
note that DnD does not always follow IRL mythology and culture for their origin. In most parts of dnd lore, theyre cursed people or creation from the demon lord Baphomet
Theyre a different variety
and yeah. Dnd minotaurs arent exactly like Astarion
I had a acid dragonborn barbarian that used to melt down bones with his acid spit as a snack :>
Making minotaurs playable is a bad move for two reasons. First it creates a dissonance between PC minotaurs and monster minotaurs. Second, it turns an interesting, well thought-out and versatile monster into cute cow people.
In terms of older editions, its too many magic items and a lot of damage in a single attack for a regular rogue to be doing :/
That's fun~
Eh, they did it well in Theros (their first release in 5e)
You ppl hate fun smh
Druid~
"Whittle Guy" syndrome makes me tired.
Imagine not liking cute cows
More power to people who like it.
The one i saw wasnt cute
Theros is a setting made for greek mythology that works on its lore. Theros minotaurs are fine. MotM minotaurs are not
I mean it’s your game dude! play as all kinds of stuff
but Im just a widdle cat
I like the separate cuts of cow. Just not all the cuts and the leather still together and alive, yknow?
ok, i will agree i hate the art for minotaurs in MoTM
Ok hold on what the hells
And also: Dissonance between monster minotaurs and playable minotaurs affects the game negatively
I just googled motm minotaurs. Thats horrid
Could be worse. Could be that stint where critters made Firbolgs cow people.
I like those firbolg way more actually, depending on the art
Meh you can argue that playable minotaurs are only half minotaur to keep balance. I get why they don't just go and hand players a playable minotaur in essence.
It's completely incongruous with what firbolgs are. Tho especially when the minotaur is right there.
There are countless ways to make playable minotaur not break the game imo
Half Minotaurs don’t exist
Nobody said anything about them breaking the game
It is. I was disappointed when i saw og firbolgs though
I think people should just play whatever manner of silly creature they feel like
Also, full disclosure: I hate beast people in general.
Fun fact, a child of a Minotaur and a human women will always be a male minotaur
if the stats are broken or whatever give em new stats
They can. Magic, curses, or ah..the...uh regular way know.
I think a fantasy species that's basically "animal anthropomorphised" is lazy, shameful and unimaginative.
The regular way just results in Male minotaurs!
I don’t know if i’d use hate but i’m kinda with you
Players should be allowed to play what they like.
Within the confines of what the DM allows
neat fun fact
bats use echolocation to find bugs midair and in the dark, and they basically fly around swarms of bugs and scoop them up like a whale eats krill
I think its fine because so many people like them
I let other people play them but yeah...I'm never touching them myself.
Think you just insulted like half of eastern-asian culture XD
but hear me out, being a cat is really funny. I get distracted by shiny objects. if you put me in an enclosed space I am unlikely to want to leave. I get to hop on my paladin's shoulders and just hang out
And greek and egyptian and americas
I do have to say that the Chinese Yaoguai and related concepts are omitted from that last comment.
what? I dont think theres much of those in there.
honestly id rather have a catgirl player than a kobold player so i cant judge that much
I’d argue in the rush to make everything playable and unique you run the risk of making everything mundane
But like you are a person sized cat. You aren't an actual cat
Thats half of DND characters when theres treasure or a secret to find anyways. Don't even need the fur.
or a gnome player, or a lizardfolk player, or most tieflings, or
That's the issue. Nobody plays them like a people. They see them strictly as the animal they're based on. While inheriting a cat-like sense of curiosity is fine you have to think of your character beyond just. "Ooh i'm a kitty"
Tbh i’d even go as fat to say Goblins and Kobolds shouldn’t be playable either
There's a lot of animal yokai and Yaoguai for one
Yeah, but not half animal half human
i approve of goblins only because goblins are cool and can make logical adventurers
its usually animals/spirits pretending to be people iirc
lol I love you and kas having completely opposite issues. I'm not sure who to debate with lol
Goblins I am okay ish with. But. After that I am like stahp
I like Yaoguai. First because Yaoguai are not... Like, a species of things. Yaoguai were all born as animals.
I adore kobolds.
Goblins make a lot more sense than others i will admit, but also it should be treated as a rarity
I am so happy the slime man is setting specific.
yeah id ask for a goblin backstory
Plasmoid?
my cat I feel is like pretty equal parts cat and person
All species are setting specific techinically a DM can ban any they see fit
I've written goblins and kobolds into my world as core races. Lizardfolk to a lesser degree.
I also don’t like it because it ties into the ‘goofy little dude’ thing which i detest
Warforged and Changelings. I'll never swap from those 2 races. 1. Because robots and 2. I'll never need to use disguise magic ever again.
YES! That's why I dm. No darn warforged or furries or dragonborn.
There are setting neutral Species such as those in Monsters of the Multiverse.
yeah there are certain races that players have a tendency to make cartoonish gremlins instead of like, mature adults with brains
Weird
you guys are so anti fun lol
Not allowing warforged is a crime. I want to play as the very first artificial intelligence in DND.
And yes I know I can ban them. Like I do changelings all the time.
Warforged isn't core in 3.5e. 🙂
Anti-your version of fun i guess, but i’m not yucking your yum!
warforged is pretty specific to eberron
And Nerath
What's wrong with "Just a silly lil guy"
Same reason i hate rogues
So there's no crime in my saying 'no Eberron races'.
The very first artificial intelligence in DnD is the first golem simulacrum or homonculi
You can rewrite them to fit into Fae'run since both the wonders and Nimblewrights exist
trying to have a campaign with a level of gravity instead of a slapstick cringe-comedy
Nothing wrong with just a silly guy. At is base. For me is tired and over done.
I’m just not a fan of goofy characters or campaigns
I’m completely fine with them as long as they have enough depth to expand on
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! There was a wild emogla here... and I didn't catch it.
theyre not core in 4e either
All it does is become oversaturated and thus unfunny
Goofy and interesting aren’t mutually exclusive
why did i say 4e, i mean 5e
i wanna see a goblin pc where the goblin is dead serious and like an underdog warrior whos striving for greatness
I long for the day I am presented with the chance to drop my oversized staff to use my feline agility to save my friends
Nott the Brave
Also hi Dizzy, I haven’t seen you on the server for a bit
I wanna see a goblin PC where the goblin is serious, but also murderous and vicious.
No Eberron races is tragic when there's changelings which is a whole other fun race to play.
nott really
If I have to get through 40 hours of Goblin PC to get serious. The Serious is the variety.
That's cause normally I just dm you instead lol
Play them in Eberron.
Nott is hella goofy in her own right. Shes played by Sam of all people
gimme a goblin where the backstory is literally you were a faceless minion/bandit
Eternally just stuck in Eberron is pain...and tragic.
That is like saying watch one piece it gets good 750 episodes in
Are half elves back in Eberron 24 book?
yes and no
Technically yes. But they have their own name.
Changelings are a fantasy staple. Blocking them off seems strange but play your way ig
since when
European folklore
Yup
yep
My tabaxi is deeply lonely and lived a large portion of their life being a walking natural disaster that everyone ran from. Then they made friends and so now they're keen to keep em
I block them off because 90% of my experience people have made them as an excuse to violate boundaries.
so many stories of babies being switched out
ah i forgot to do my european folklore homework i was too busy doing my american movies homework
whats the new name for half elf?
Just because something is a fantasy staple does not mean it should be playable.
Korovhar or something
You know what else is a fantasy staple? Demon gods.
Wats wrong with changelings
And I say that I must respectfully disagree
I would say characters like changelings, Goblins, Kobolds and things like Tabaxi and Tortles are things i would ask from a better/more experienced player
Does anyone know if the new Forge of the Artificer conflicts with the Tasha's Artificer?
Dragons are a fantasy staple. I'm still not going to let you play one.
Thats...actually rough. I was gonna make a joke about now if people wanna be racist towards halfelves they gotta say the correct name but I realized this is DND and a lot of those kinda people filter in and out.
This I will agree with
For me. Changelings just invites problem player behavior.
And why is that?
tortles on that list?
it completely changes several core features
Like sure go ahead, but why are YOU here?
Like what if you don't mind me asking?
so its okay if I use "half elf" because ... i think if i said half elf, more people understand me?
Though, less so kobolds and maybe tabaxi
Changelings definitely tho
why not
curious as to why tortles
because I have my own opinions and my aunt taught me to respect other people's perspectives
"Oooh I am going to shift into the princess's betrothed and get information out of her in the bed chamber."
You don't understand. I am asking why you disagree. Meaning what is your reasoning
Sorry I misread that
Mostly only found in Chult to my understanding so how did you get to where the Campaign is taking place? What brought you here?
ah, localization thing
So would the advice be to not get the new Forge of the Artificer if I have an Artificer in a current campaign?
I have booted no less than 8 changeling players over the years. It is not worth it.
Does your table agree with using the new one or no?
as a side tangent i think id really love it if players were more willing to be local to the starting area or the area of the campaign instead of being errant murderhobos
Whereas your run of the mill Human fighter, duh obviously you’re interested in guarding this caravan/delivering this message however the Campaign would start
Actual yikes behavior. Misread that as "looking for behavior in her chamber" but I reread what it actually said and it jumpscared me.
THIS. Like, if I give you a detailed plot-hook / story entry... why can't you come up with something remotely local?
They aren't sure yet. No one has it, and we didn't know how significantly things would change.
I will preface it by saying i lean definitely more towards the realistic side of play i guess, more logical
I am aware that that is not an issue with the species but rather the specific people. But when an option attracts a type of player. Remove the option.
To be fair, that is also a staple of the genre. And a lot of genre. That is how king Arthur is conceived. If your character is villainous, that's probably the sort of thing they would do. But it requires table agreement. And the understanding that most of your teammates might kill you if they find out
It's also super gross.
Yes. Villains do gross things.
i dont think they should be on thye player side
I believe player freedom is how a good game is formed. Bogging oneself with the rules breaks one of the most important ones of all. Rule 0. What I meant by what I said is that yes there should be restrictions but if the game has it why stop it? If you truly trust your group you will know they won't cross a boundry you set
Villains. I don't run with Evil PCs
especially when in this context, that doesnt seem to be the type of behavior allowed at Kas table...
Well I've been in a few games that were enhanced by a villainous PC. It is rare though
The bottom of the alignment chart is straight up not allowed.
isnt every game though
But yeah. Point taken
I am a first-time DM. We have an evil PC in the party. It's fine. They're not stupid about it. I told them it would only work if they could find a way to stay motivated to working with the group to accomplish "goodly" aims.
Yeah unless I'm running an evil campaign (which btw at session 0 I set that they cannot do THAT behavior) I usually require players to at least be Neutral. They can be greedy scumbags and loot goblins and lean towards the unlawful side but playing a good campaign as an evil character usually doesn't work.
honestly it would be interesting on the inverse; like if you're a player and you have some important NPC you're into and have gotten on with, but then you find out you're talking to a changeling one day, and NPC is missing, and what did you do with them?? interrogation scene, aaa
Evil PC’s require an insane amount of nuance that you’re not going to find unless it’s in a super long term table with people you know are good players.
i mean, i got a table of menaces who would do that, but we arent comically evil about it
People also have a tendency to view Evil = random acts of chaos
The First light changelings are actually quite interesting as they can actually turn into beasts and are more noticeable
Yeah. Most of my players come from the Internet. And there is a 0% chance a random is getting that level of trust.
and i love the vibe of that table who are just a bunch of hoodlums doing work
I fear you misunderstand. I was asking you to explain why you disagreed when I said that something being a staple of fantasy should not mean it is playable.
people think that to be chaotic evil you need to kick babies and eat orphans, when really you just need to be a chaotic neutral character but more of a selfish bastard. or be causing chaotic and evil impacts on the world, ALA evil minions
Yeah evil for sake of evil canevil.
I have a long list of options not allowed in my games tbh. It's a spreadsheet now hahaha. That is for my free games. I am more lax for the paid ones.
I answered the question but I will rephrase. I didn't mean all staples of fantasy. I meant the staples included as game options for a player to access.
I mean you can be chaotic evil and not chaotic yourself, you might look to sow Chaos through orchestrating it behind the scenes
I have a long list, based on my first game.
yeah often your impact on the world matters more than your personality
Buy that is a non-sequitur. We were talking about the logic behind whether or not something should be a game option.
Assassinating political leaders, stirring up rumour and innuendo, setting people against each other
chaotic-stupid isn't acceptable at any point in the good/evil axis.
or lawful stupid
any alignment- stupid really
It helps I can kill many undesirable options by saying. "Forgotten Realms only"
I still can't believe that emogla got away.
I believe it should because as I mentioned player Freedom matters to me and my groups.
its a pikachu clone, let it be
Buddy we tend to pick up randos a lot in DND. Usually I have faith in humanity they won't cross the line, but sometimes especially with newer players unless you set a strict boundary they will cross it. I'd rather prevent some problems from happening then have to play clean up.
I mean i personally view Chaotic as meaning less interested in what is percieved by the whole. Chaotic Good = your own moral compass and thoughts, lawful good = What society deems is good
Oh, I disagree, since some societies can be more neutral than lawful.
That was going to be my next caveat
Society can also include places like... Menzobarranzen or whatever
Lawful good isn't "I'm good because the law says so" It's more "I am good because I follow a code of ethics"
That is set by the law, so a Paladin serving a Just lord is lawful good to my mind
Naw. More like, I follow a GOOD code of ethics.
Evil PC's are kind of fun tho ngl if you run an evil game
Yes but... The discussion was, in that context, that some (me included) argued that minotaurs should not have been published as PCs. So that doesn't matter
this is cathartic
this is why I don't like typing here
I don't think that's what catharsis means.
"I dont think that word means what you think it means"
lawful is because you follow the law. Good is because you follow a moral code of ethics. A Lawful Evil character exists because they act terrible but their evil falls into the confines of the law.
Evil PCs can be fun with a high level of trust. Anything less than it's asking for a bad time.
Lawful Neutral = These are the rules for better or worse and we’re sticking to them.
Lawful Evil = These rules are just straight up bad for the majority but we’re going to follow them
anyway, thanks for bingo, alignment in DnD discord
LOL
i think ultimately since alignment is descriptive rather than prescriptive,
what actually matters is your impact on the world as perceived by the world, not your internal thoughts or beliefs. Because the main point of alignment is to determine where you go when you die in this edition :p because we got rid of alignment spells
been a good solid month since last time i feel
Is alignment even a thing in 5e?
Yes
its on your sheet
Yep
yes. Unfortunately
I agree to an extent
It is but its not and shouldn't be reinforced
I meant dull
Even if the rules are good for the majority a character can still follow them and be lawful evil
There's too much nuance to the point where you could mention it as a label/flavor tops
I always play Lawful Chaotic. I arbitrarily decide whether to follow the letter of the law to a tee or completely spit in the face of it whenever it is most inconvenient for my DM!
yeah thats called being a lawyer/landlord/loan shark/HOA karen/etc
I don't play 5e, so... I wouldn't know without asking. I don't know what the sheets look like.
oh ok
That is just chaotic.
Even if said lord is secretly waging war against poorer nations with the help of the paladin. Is that always good?
Damn it your right!
Chaotic petty to be exact
Lawful evil my beloved
poor DM must be in shambles
Try Chaotic Lawful next time
By that point is the lord even just
you can have lawful good vs lawful good fighting
I think that’s where alignment isn’t nuanced enough
its not. 9 boxes to describe morality isnt ever nuanced
bingo
Alignment is only meant to be hard coded for the outer planes.
And dragons!
because extraplanar embody them
nah, theyre still individuals. Even if most of them will follow innate tendencies
Its really not nuanced but DND players usually make up with flavor and additional character traits for what the character system lacks.
I have to say i’m mixed about the Dragons having set personalties almost
I play 3rd edition.
even then Wotc seems to ignore that mostly now
the whole fun of different types of dragon is looking at their lore descriptions and how that relates to their type, otherwise they're all the same but red or blue or white or green
I hope its better then OSE... I'm tired of PCs dying 😄
Red Dragons are always cruel and evil, why is that? you can be greedy and not cruel
There's a bajillion dragons nowadays of various shapes and colors WOTC says we gotta categorize them to make them easier to RP
You know. I have been thinking, we talk a lot about adversarial DMs. But we don't talk enough about Adversarial Players.
Specifically MY Player characters dying.
dragons having cookie cutter personalities 🚫
dragons having common trends but still recognizable as iconic from each other
because greedy and not cruel is a green or blue dragon
Alignment is not that complicated. It started as a way to say "our characters are on this team and we're all on that team against this other team". It had no reason to become more but it did
All dragons have greed in their personality, no matter the family
Even metallics are still greedy. Thats part of being a dragon
found the dragon
Not always. There are exceptions
But Dragons live solitary lives for the most part, except in rare circumstances
They just center thier greed somewhere unique
H-how?! My shapeshifting is the ultimate disguise?!
So their personality should be dictated by their experiences
There have always been exceptions to hard codes by and Large Baatezu are Lawful Evil, Modrons are Lawful Neutral, etc.
The only dragon I've seen that doesn't have greed seems to be the Song/Spirit dragons
the metallics are almost all social, and blue/red/green chromatics are also fairly social, if only by warlording
Their flavor of greed is knowledge (at least in the newer books)
I remember reading an rpg horror story where a Rogue put down they were true neutral and they were outed as evil by a "lawful good" paladin and instantly smited on the spot because they were "evil" despite the Rogue not doing anything
I mean all dragons have a need to accumulate more wealth for their afterlife
what are they, egyptian
greens dont really warlord as much as they gaslight, gatekeep, greenboss
isnt that blue
Imagine a dragon that hoards people but like adopts kids and not the traditional way they usually do
No, blue are mafia
oh yea
shrewd and calculating is blue
this is literally blue dragons
This is why we make sure PvP must be agreeable between both characters for it to happen in session 0 tbh. Or disable it altogether too but I find that less fun
Both. But blue center more on creating hierarchies of servants rather than play on people's psychological weaknesses.
"Welcome to the family. Where we are first"
Blues are more more political you might say
blues are the secret kings of the kingdom
The Dragon Princes of Murghôm are all of different types and typically get along.
kingpins
I feel like a Song Dragon would have a hoard of adopted children
Silver dragon moment
one must wonder if the dragon adopts children for their benefit or because it wants to have a positive image
My PCs found a bunch of people petrified by a medusa. If they awaken another one, it will be a silver or gold dragon in disguise. 🙂
"I just think they're neat" -The Dragon
Copper Dragons too
Hey, the new copper dragon art literally has one babysits all types of dragon wyrmlings
The Gang teaches a silver dragon that slavery is Bad.
Copper dragons learning the spell for freezing age just to hoard more wyrmlings lmao
tbh if i was a powerful dragon or demon lord or big bad guy id probably go around collecting people i thought were neat too
found the brass
or was it bronze or copper
which one of those three metallics literally kidnaps invites bards
"Where are all the dragons heading?" "Coppersteins island."
Bro discovered colonialism and slavery
wild
In one ear and out the other
Song/Spirit dragons spend most of their lives masquerading as humanoids. In Fact they actually prefer it to their draconic forms on most occasions
are you really an evil overlord if you dont conquer and enslave people tbh
ok, its copper that are the ones that kidnap bards (?)
The Pereghost says: "Yes actually."
to this day i still cannot differentiate the stereotypical/common specimen of those three metallics. Silver and Gold are the only ones who stand out the most
i think its because metallics just dont usually come up
Yeah the other three metallics suffer from an identity problem
This is because they have the good boy side of the allignment. Don't even get me started on the Gems
One makes jokes, one is a mercenary and one... I don't know. One lives near the sea, one in the desert and one... I don't know.
Oi, gems are neat
i just pretend everything but metallics and chromatics doesnt exist
Gold Dragons are basically Batman
Nah, more martian manhunter
If you're playing in the official setting you kind of can't since they do actually impact it
just amp up the hermit
bronze are lore hoarders and live in coastal caves, so they're allies of wizards and hermits and druids
Lung Dragons are the best dragons
Because they aren't dragons.
without the weakness to fire
Lung Dragons are Celestials
They have the best design
Though do remember that the only good dragon is a dead dragon.
still pissed we dont have Lung Dragons introduced in Fizban. Curse you Bahamut, would it kill you to visit the ones in Kara Tur?!
anything happening in the official setting isnt real unless its mentioned in the module im currently playing, therefore ive never seen them so they dont exist
Something I am thinking about is have a Frieza saga like campaign. But for my Frieza-like bbeg I just use a Greatwyrm's stats.
This guys never met a copper dragon
That's fair
I think every designer at WotC would pop a vein if Kara-Tur was described in 5e.
Plus they would have 3 Transformations
just go to Cormyr, purple and amethyst dragons are more common there
The bros of Dragons
cant they at least Neon Kamigawa it
Okay. So like
brb let me hit up the cormyr module
Cormyr is fantastic, my favourite PC was Cormyrian
The dumb Eldenser thing. Right?
That's a trap? Right?
por que
oh wait! it doesn't exist!
They only did Fae'run in the book on the forgotten realms that just came out. C'mon Wotc where is Kara-Tur
It's been reduced to simple references
Cormyr is in Faerun
Kara Tur is still in Faerun
Nope
Not even close. Thats like saying "America is in Europe"
Eh? Is it not on the East side?
It has to be a trap.
You mean an undead Dragon, possessed a sword. For the leader of Dragon Slaying Knights who fight the cult of the Dragon to spread out of Cormyr to the rest of the world and get out of Cormyr.
An undead dragon has convinced undead dragon hunters that he is the good one.
No it's on another continent. It's in the Forgotten Realms not Fae'run which is a continent
Better to say Kara-tur is part of Toril.
don't you have like the giant faerun map?
This whole time i thought Kara Tur was just East of THay and shit
Kara-Tur is the Eastern half of the Supercontinent Bharyar.
Faerûn is the Western half. Zakahra is the Southern portion.
Of the Planet, not of Faerun
I do!
too many small letters, brain hurts
they all go flying off the page
Dyslexia moment
Technically it is east of Thay. In the same way that Japan is East of Germany
To get to Kara-Tur travel east of Thay through the plains of Taan until you get to the Quyoya Desert and pass the ruins of the Dragonwall.
Give me your best D&D books to read por favor !!
fair
So Thay is supposed to be Germany
the new forgotten realms books have been a joy
Kara-Tur is east-asia, Zakhara is the arabic peninsula. Which is also in asia but not east asia.
ok guys i have a question unrelated to setting
If you're in a dungeon and you're guarding the dungeon, how do you keep the bugs out? do you get pets? what kinda pets? other means?
The new Eberron book is great too
... You know what, it kind of fits.
it is! could have used more monsters but oh well
I cannot say you're wrong
gelatinous cubes
Thay has a certain... Holy German Empire thing going on. Except with the Zulkirs replacing the electors
What about Dragonlance? Worth?
If you are south of Thay head to Murghôm and cross Gbor Nor, head into Semphar and brave the Jumpa Gorge and the mountain nations of Kharazari and Ra-Khati.
you dont need more monsters
i feel like the roaches and flies would just run away from it
invisible to the naked eye
i could slay with just the SRD, but i love these books
Jello to the Black dragons
Gelatinous cubes and swarms of centipedes & rats.
question was how you keep bugs out of the dungeon though
okay that works for hallways, but what about cluttered areas
Homonculi tasked with cleaning. And yeah Ti may be right, a gelatinous cube is excellent at cleaning and security
Gray oozes
But maybe not so good at pest control though
Easy. Hire a wizard
they can hide in the walls
were oozes the true answer all along
Fifth level wizard spell: Servant Horde
While gelatinous cubes are invisible, they have a smell and make noise when they move.
theyre Jubilex's answer to all the pests of the multiverse
i imagine its a very long squeek
Jubilex IS the pest of the multiverse
while a swarm of rats and centipedes would work i think the tradeoff of having swarms of centipedes and rats is almost worse
No, thats another demon lord. I dont remember whose the lord of flies though
If you somehow find a way to teach prestidigitation to homonculi, you've got the perfect cleaning system
Jubilex is clean up
Baalzebub is Lord of the Flies.
does it actually kill bugs tho? i think it just cleans
Or Beelzebub, as we call him in my campaign.
it cleans the same way it cleans adventurers that it passes through
You need an artificer to summon it first tho
"Lord of the Flies" in Hebrew is pronounced Baal-Zebub. Belzebuth. Is there a Belzebuth somewhere?
prestidigitation
I think thats the name of an Archdevil
It is.
Homonculi are not summoned, they're made. And wizards can make them
it traps and melts them down
we were talking about the cantrip not the cube.
ive only been talking about the cube??
i replied to a different person?? talking about the cantrip??
and you replied to that with cube
Artificers can summon them using the new Homunculus Servant spell
oh im blind
is ok we all are
Hi blind I’m Nugget
Nah you good it literally came out today
I have a rooster named Nugget. He's not blind, though.
nom
he can't do math, he can't read, what else can't he do
live and learn
fogot you can't post gifs but I was gonna post a gif of The Nugget Cave
hanging on the edge of tomorrow
Oh. Well anyways an artificer is still not necessary but they do make them more easily
true.
can't artificers make the mechanical wonders?
I thought that replaces homonculus servant
that and warforged depending on the setting
I'm speaking mechanics
It doesn't
they can be made but both still exist
how interestin
The New Artificer basically removed infusions but made Replicate Magic Item the core class feature
they solved the issue by making the other infusions just magic items
yeah I was sure that mechanical wonders being in the last book was meant to replace homonculus servant entirely
I think making it into a spell is very clunky
The Mechanical wonders are a setting specific machine whereas the homonculus is setting agnostic
it's for that reason
Clunky initially but actually very thoughtful in retrospect.
Now what we need are rules for making golems.
But we also need those rules to make it basically inaccessible for PCs
Only way for now is the Manual of [Insert Golem}
We don't want the Create Magen + Necromancy Wizard issue again
