Of course you could get a similar effect with a wood elf
Since you only need at least 5ft more than 30ft
Pro tip: if you can consistently roll a 10 or higher on acrobatics, you can just continuously jump and ignore difficult terrain
Isn’t jump a bonus action
No it's movement
Huh good to know, I’m a fraud. That’s why I use Misty step
Also jumping is not acrobatics, it’s athletics
There’s the Jump spell
It’s to avoid being prone when landing in difficult terrain (2014)
thing I've been wondering
Where’s this?
it make sense for someone to have advantage on intimidation checks if they're above a certain size type and sneak up on someone?
I mean sure
ok ty
Stuff like that is pretty free-form on how you run it
apparently acquisition incorperated is partner content?
why is it listed as official?
Dragons can polymorph into people right?
Because it is
Some of them, yes.
Okay thank you
by that logic isnt critical role content official?
No need for that logic. Some critical role content is official, some isn't
is blood hunter official?
I hope so
lol
No
Hello again, friends
I.. am very sick 😎
Blood magic is cool, as, fuhh
rip
Hello very sick, me too
But most ppl use it. I use it to
Hello very sick, I’m slightly sick
Ok why are we all sick
The big brrr
I’m in Australia
That’s on you atp
We should fight our sicknesses in a WWE Free-For-All-esque fight
@bronze wave @glass granite
I’d lose ngl
I used the same pfp as you like 3 years ago
Spectacular proposal
Ouch, but touché
Imagine being in Australia and having to fight giant spiders and have your ground hook just to go to work everyday
Nah the spiders are tiny. They’re, what, 30cm?
Sorry, I measure In Freedom 😔
Well, a foot is 31
I’ll do it again
Don't you dare...
Jumping rules
Gwendolyn, I will slay you again.
Hi very gay, I’m Nugget. Hope you get better
Damn, my funny joke didn’t work
Generally pinging the entire server isn't funny lol
Were you about to ping everyone??!
I mean i doubt it would have pinged everyone
I know, but it's better to not get in trouble
It didn’t give me a pop up showing I could do it
Yikes
^ any moderately sized server has it off
And this server is a bit fatter than moderately sized
Absolute unit
Chonkz
I need a Dragon to play as in bg3, I was thinking white red or green
What
The base dragons are pretty broken when you just give the player control over it so it must be a pretty extensive mod
Technically I’m playing a half dragon that can become a dragon
You probably want to take it to #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers or #non-dnd-topics
Yeah, it ain’t considered dnd
I forgot, sorry, I just need a metallic or chromatic dragon
Chromatic, idk
But which one….. lol
hello
Hola
Play as a red dragon
chromatics are the ones related to tiamat right?
Yes
Hello
Said spiders are venomous too
Yeah but they're giant so it's not a dangerous venom
The rule is generally that the bigger the animal, the less deadly the venom
Biology is strange
Big scorpions are less dangerous than small ones, you know. Same for spiders. Deadliest octopus? The extremely small blue-ringed one
Oooh I know of them damn blue ringed octopi
Not if it’s magical
And, well, Australia definitely isn’t normal
Magiiic
It has been touched by the abyss, hence why demons live there
Australians and Drow are both people from “down under”
Well except for the fact that australians are humans and are not usually part of a murder cult-led society
That's a pretty big distinction I think
One of those is correct
gomornin
Goevenin
And drows can live to a thousand, which is not the case for australians.
Well all I said is that they’re both from “down under” I never said any more similarities
Hmmm, you sure? /silly
why not?
hello
elloing
Mornin
Goooooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
probably not if i had to guess
You’re just waiting for someone to say “I’m” aren’t you? -.-
Hi aren't you, I'm Slimmy
what yall upto this fine mornin
DAMN IT /lh
well honestly if you think about it at the end of the movie he made a big change, if you ask me i think that obi wan was still the worst part
What?
Nah, I’m trying to expand my arsenal.
For example
No, I’m not Just Waiting For Someone To Say I’m Aren’t You, I’m Nugget. You’ve known me for this long, and you still don’t know my name?
Imma keep us on topic. Uhhh… Bahamut
Wrong channel? Wrong server?
be serious, anakin is top 10 charecters of all time
Yeahhh go to #non-dnd-topics
I keep confusing his name with Baphomet
A mistake that would annoy both of them
Btw, you got so close to letting me dad joke you there.
Anywho, what’s your favourite silly NPC you’ve had in your game? Either as a player or DM.
in the last moments of his life he decided to go through more pain to save his only son
Off topic, plz go elsewhere
hi I am new to dnd so can someone tell me how the time works like how to measure time for long rests/short rests etc
ohhhh shit mb dawg
Dude. Wrong channel, wrong server
-# gasp, prey
Hi new to dnd, I’m Nugget. In all seriousness, a long rest takes 8 hours and a short rest takes 1.
Long Rests are 8 hours period, short rests are 1 hour period. This is found in the PHB
I tend to kill silly NPCs on sight.
How about stuff outside of the universe?
okay and how do we know the 8 hrs have been completed or not
There is no stuff outside the universe. The definition of "universe" is the totality of things that exist
Well, there’s between fiction and non-fiction
Like IRL and your DnD world
The DM just says the eight hours are done? I'm not sure I know what you're asking
Good silly npcs exist
alright thanks
The DnD world exists in the books and in my mind. Both are part of the universe, therefore it is part of the universe
The DM says the 8 hours pass without saying you get interrupted or anything. How else would the 8 hours be resolved? It's not IRL time.
Fair enough
I have yet to see one
Maybe cuz you kill them all
My dm made a silly caracter named steve, he was a goofy magician with the habit of talking to himself totally out of the discussion. Later he was the bbeg because my party basically nuked his village. The caracter was silly and goofy, yes, but once he had everything he wanted, we took him very seriously
#dnd-newcomers is much better for learning
Pretty sure he was the hero and you were the bbegs
The “retired” arch hag named Salo Kar, who literally just followed the players and kept setting up her shop wherever they went
However, she kept using currencies of neighbouring kingdoms, or asking for silly things as payment, like tears, or a toe nail clipping. At one point even asked for just a whole toe nail
Maybe, I mean for him we were the bad guys, that's true. But for us he was the bad guy, so... I dunno
You nuked his village.
Nuking his village was kind of evil
Even my BBEG, the god defier, would be horrified at such an action without proper justification
There is no ambiguity here
His village was infected by a zombi disease like in resident evil, we were afraid
That's no reason to nuke it. Those are zombies, there's no reason to be afraid of zombies
Okay thanks
They're like a comfort monster. Get some radiant damage. Nail one to a wall and use it for target practice
I would be 100% on your side if they were ordinary dnd zombies, but our dm like when his monsters are creepy and/or dangerous (if there is a reason for them to be) so no, we didn't wabted to be close the more of 5 of these
Moost zombie are unaffected by the radiation of nukes soo it might hurt more than it helps
what class would you actually want to be if it was you
Lolth. Probably a few others
oh lolth is a spider?
Miska is a demon lord but he counts.
yeah shes spider lady
I just assumed she liked spider webs
And an elf, and a demon, and a goddess
for context my only interaction with lolth and drow at all is in bg3
Lolth is the goddess of spiders and the drow, yes.
She is also technically a Demon Lord (by the definition of "a controller of a layer of the Abyss")
Miska the Wolf-Spider is a demon "god" who happens to be a spider too, but he doesn't have a portfolio, and I'm like 90% sure he's dead.
actually this reminds me
justice for miska
do any races other than the drow and the
actually does the evil lady the gith worship count as a god?
that's a different tanget, do any races other than the drow have patron gods specifically for their race?
duergar i think
duegar are akin to gnomes right?
Vlaakith is not a god, no. She has not undergone apotheosis, but the Githyanki can believe so strongly in her that they receive divine magic, yes.
lol no dwarves
no, the duergar are to dwarves what drow are to elves
huh
the underdark version of gnomes r ‘deep gnomes’
I thought they were a subspecies of gnome mb
Dwarves have Moradin as their patron god, elves generally have Corellon, dragons have Tiamat and Bahamut (and Sardior though he is dead).
there are plenty of patron gods of the individual races.
god I wish I could slap her in bg3
that reminds me actually
They are a subspecies of Gnomes but they are also a standalone race in later versions
Like how Githzerai were a subrace until it was properly separated
do y'all think an obsidian dragon wanting to become the next god of gem dragons is a good reason for them to join a plot?
Githyanki and Githzerai are still the same species, they just differ in culture (which is manifested in their differing racial abilities)
lots of gods are aside from humans for whatever reason
this is a very big tangent
for more context
sure why not
obsidian is a rock tho
this obsidian dragon essentially became a vampire in a plot involving a few quasi-deities
It's still considered a gem dragon
I was told they were gem dragons
well gems r rocks i think
they're minerals, technically.
but point is: Obsidian dragons are considered gem dragons.
lol would that mean a gargoyle is their brother
No, because gargoyles are elementals of stone. while dragons may be elementally charged, they are not elemental in nature
well. not until they ascend to greatwyrms and manifest as their element, I guess, but they're still not Elemental Creature Type
Not dead. Just locked up
Sardior was destroyed and shattered along with the First World
Fizban's Treasury of Dragons
She may not be a goddess but she's the most powerful character in that game. No contest
still
I wish I could slap her so damn bad
Uh? Was someone talking about Sardior?
oh I misread which message you pinged me
MY BAD! Sorry, Slim.
mystra?
... OK well, Mystra is in theory more powerful than Vlaakith. So is Shar
tbh mystra seems like a walking contradiction
So Vlaakith is... the third most powerful character in that game
she looks pretty as all hell though
mystra seems more powerful then shar tho even if shars her mum
oh yh what abt elminster
Shar, at one point in history, created her own Weave
Shar is not Mystra's mother
Elminister is just a level 20 wizard which means he beats the likes of ||Raphael and Sarevok||
she created her? did i get the lore wrong
Vlaakith is nowhere as powerful as actual gods lol, I dare say she's weaker than the ||Dead Three Gods||
No Shar is Mystryl's mother. Mystryl is dead
Most powerful characters in bg3 is Mystra, Shar, Withers
mystryl merged with midnight and etc didnt she?
Mystra's mother was an unimportant human peasant
myrkul jumpscared the shit out of me in bg3
thought I talked the guy down but nope you're fighting a literal god now
No that's just an apostle
I did not care about the difference at the time
No. Mystryl died, the first Mystra was her reincarnation but not her. This Mystra died. Midnight is a human woman who ascended to godhood and took the name Mystra for herself
Because "Midnight" is a bit of an embarrassing name I guess
How do rangers get their magic?
Does Mystra count as an antagonist?
i always thought after cyric did his thing all 3 merged into one at the end
No
hey, im new to dnd. can anyone maybe help me to check if my oc would fit in dnd?
okay
Is the 2014 arcane trickster useful?
Be nice to Shar by the way. Lots of her children are dead.
Probably the best Rogue subclass
Alrighty
That might explain why she's so... Like that
Mystra is a neutral force
She just needs a cleric with revivefy
That gives shit suggestions, but is otherwise not working for or against the party
Considering the circumstances in which Mystryl died, that was not an option
Big sad
karsus was the first lolcow
wish is supposed to replicate an 8th level spell isnt it
I would not advise trying
It can kind of do whatever you wish for, give permanent resistances and stuff but it's dm dependant
And in the case of Mystryl there was simply nothing left to bring back
unless its a 12th level wish but mystra banned thos
It's a shame. She was the only competent goddess of magic
Just add a level 3 spell slot to your level 9th one
That's how i do high level magic at least
diy magic?
Yuh, just add your spell slots together
Ngl this is probably not real and too op but would be funny. Also give martials more stuff
wait so if im a sorcerer and i twin cast two level 9 spells i get level 18?
how didnt mystra fix this loophole? is she stupid?
That's not how twined spell works, at least in 2024
You can just add a level 9+8+1 spell slots though
That's not a thing
If you twin cast a ninth level spell (not sure many are eligible), you just cast a ninth level spell
sure it is if u study enough
Twinned wish was already impossible in 2014
Not all spells can be twinned
Cuz sorcerers didn't have wish, no?
They have
Can you imagine twin walls of fire to just lock down a whole room
Ohh, i see
No because Wish was not eligible for twin spell
I see. Use wish to remove that limitation
what if while u wish u just lock eyes on a target
Great. Your wish fails. Roll 1d100 to see if you lose the ability to cast wish ever again
"i wish to have our eyes locked forever" eyes of you and the person get bigahh unbreakable locks on themselves
"Mystra appears and says 'No, bye' "
Seriously, it is a huge mistake to cast wish to do anything but duplicate other spells
In desperation, maybe
gale must’ve been crazy powerful to bcome her bf or he was an industry plant
been wondering actually
Aren't there other effects like giving you or your allies permanent resistances? Also isn't replicating 8th level spells with a 9th level one kinda trash?
are gods immune to this?
Plenty of other effects, that you shouldn't use. Stick to duplication.
And no, it's not trash.
It duplicates any spell of 8th level or below and ignores material components
Why not just use the 8th level spells slot on it or the 9th with an upcast?
they prob have more tools at their disposal than a wish to use
10th level spell?
- no material components
- you can duplicate spells you do not know, didn't prepare or are not on your class list
Yes
yea if its mystra we’re talking abt
Immune to what?
wait that was a joke are there actually 10th level spells?
yes
the whole losing ability to use wish thing
You can duplicate ANY spell. So you can use resurrection without the costly components while being a wizard
Ohh, it doesn't require material components? Now it makes sense
No, not immune
Bear in mind, some spells due to their wording can't be duplicated. Like dream of the blue veil
There's one that like turns you into a god and takes 20 campaigns worth of resources
Can't duplicate that one if you don't have the material components, even with wish
Interesting
didnt rlly go well for the last guy who used it tho
is there a list of these anywhere?
Pretty sure they are not ayer accessible
I dont even know of they are of 5e or of older versions
Btw how do rangers get their magic?
on some wikis for FR lore, they’re not in 5e
You know druids? Like that but worse, and i guess a lot of training
In 2014 by getting to level 2
they’re called epic spells
I mean, do they train for them, do they get them from speaking to trees too much, from a druid teaching them?
Are there rare ones too?
Same way druids do I guess. A ranger is kind of a hybrid of druid and fighter
yeah they’re coloured blue in the menu screen
How do druids get them?
So I'd guess any answer that would be appropriate for a druid would be for a ranger
What about legendary?
pretty rare man ur gna have to upgrade ur item discovery
Rangers get their magic by their own connection to nature. They live among it enough that they've learned to walk in step, much like a druid does.
I see, alrighty
Though I flavor quite a few ranger spells as being "little tricks" they've picked up, whether from others or by their own invention.
One other spell where it's kind of useless to duplicate it with wish: Teleportation circle
You still need to draw the circle on the ground, even with wish. So using it with wish does save you maybe a bit of time, and the rare inks and chalks. But you still need to have ink or chalk on you to draw
... Or maybe you could, like, use your sword to carve it on the dirt?
Or items with some "legendary" past story
like the poo scraper from bg3
Tell me about that😳
its a knife u find in a coffin in someones basement
it used to belong to a quasit named shovel
the description is smth like “the abyss isnt the darkest place this knife has seen”
depends on the quasit
Kind of underwhelming that a legendary horror like the tarasque, extinction manifest, is such a weak thing to face if you know the mechanics of the game, especially in comparison to other BBEG's like Vecna, Tiamat, Demogorgon or Orcus
tarrasque as a bbeg seems underwhelming tbh, its more of a weapon so ig thats why its weaker compared to the others
Hello
wsp
Am good
okay
....absorb elements and vortex warp were removed from artificer?
while the 5e one is absolutely a disappointment, you have to remember that the goal of most Tarrasque encounters isn't to kill the Tarrasque... it's to stop it from wreaking havoc by destroying whatever village/town/city the players deemed important to themselves.
It's not really a big deal. The tarrasque isn't there to challenge high level players with potential death. Of course they can kill it, what matters is the destruction it wrecks and how long it takes them to kill it
The tarrasque is really not meant to be an active threat. It's a large animal that roars and stomps around with no malice. Avoid it, evacuate, kill it. But there is no story around it, not inherently.
Good Godzilla movies are not about Godzilla, you know?
Or in the latest Superman movie. There's a monster, it's dangerous to regular folk but not really to the heroes.
Not every Superman villain needs to be Doomsday or Zod, yeah
Plus, if you’re underwhelmed with the lethality of it, start modding it. Add new damage types, more dice, more health, scarier abilities
Give it an attack where it picks up a house and throws it 600ft or something, just to disrupt the typical strats players might try
If I really want a world-destroyer that can kill PCs and flatten civilisations, I use Tiamat.
Throwing a random prompt out there I had as I'm planning out my latest character now
plus, if your tarrasques aren’t scary, use them at lower levels. Level 20 players might not be scared. Level 15 players will be.
To be fair, at level 15, you still might be able to solo the tarrasque without taking damage if you prepare well
Use King Ghidorah too
The captain of a ship in a coastal garrison who's a Paladin, would this concept work
It requires a very specific build designed to beat a tarrasque, and a DM who’s unwilling to improvise a very plausible ranged attack
It should probably go in #character-discussion but just throwing it out here now
why not?
It doesn't feel very level 1-like
mind if I get your DM opinion?
The captain thing came from me wanting to assign the soldier background
No, it doesn’t
That's true. Maybe a lowwer rank or captain of a tiny squad and make being captain of garrison a goal
Or unofficial captain. Only in name
Good thinking
That works too, but outside of aquatic campaigns it may be hard to justify this character
Why adventure on land instead of doing sea stuff in a garrison
I just wrote down "... unofficial captain of a one-man fleet"
Let’s end the convo on this channel for now
Yeah good idea its getting out of scale
I don’t wanna be smited
I have a weird idea... An NPC in the game I'm running is actually a serial killer. And I have been thinking about a way to reveal it.
Or at least hint at it.
Have someone caught them worshipping some questionable god, Loviatar (a bit more subtle) or Bhaal (less subtle)
There's a succubus going around town charming nobles into making certain political decisions. I think I can hint at what he is if he kills the succubus because she successfully charmed him. Because when he loves something or someone, his first desire is to kill it.
i've considered it too!
Nah, he's an atheist. In the sense that he doesn't care about the gods
Now how to communicate it with the players?...
If that happens, and they find the succubus butchered, he'll just claim he resisted the charm
Walk into the room as it’s happening?
As he's finishing killing her? Yeah, could work.
Some deluded monologue could seal the imagery
Sure
There isn't any way they'll reach the "he killed her because he was charmed because he loves killing the people he likes" conclusion though
Not by themselves
If they go investigate the person you can mention that moost of the victims look like close family or friends.
Hence why I suggested the monologue. Might not be the clearest, but it’s something
does anyone know of an all girl or afab party/server?
No, but look around in #looking-for-community perhaps?
thank youuuu
Sounds like Toga from MHA's logic
is there a channel for dnd questions????
What is your question?
So like I have this idea of a character, and I want her to start out like uhmm
Like she has magical powers (??) or sorcery when she was born and she’s like supposed to be destined to become a sorcerer but she decided to become a bard is it okay to do that kind of character???????
Ohh right right thanksss
anyone else slightly dissapointed with the new arti?
I am disappointed whit the subclasses (they needed to define your build but most of them are just a bit weak)
New Alchemist is pretty good
The level 9 feature needs a rework by my opinion
haven't looked at the subclasses yet, but they removed infusions which makes alot of things kinda eh, they also made it so you can't attune to any item regardless of species/class requirement and expertise with tools.
also it's not hard to be better than the old alchemist, was giga cheeks in 2014
also strangely enough RaW you can make a +1 antimatter rifle now, so technically speaking it is very strong if your dm allows it
as an infusion at lvl 2*
all the subclasses I have read needed a small buf
What's the book with the new artificer? Is it official now in 2024 then?
Yes, it’s called ebberon: forge of the artificer
Oh wicked
For now it’s only available to dnd beyond subscribers :(
Are dndbeyond subs the only people who know the list of changes to Artificer then?
You can look on YouTube or if you know someone whit content share you can see them
Bet, although it seems like they have a free public article
New artificer subclass is nice
I like them they just need a small buff
i'm just waiting on re-animator artificer now to become official
gimme bio-ficer
that does make me think. Anyone got any predictions on the books of next year? My only thoughts are ravenloft and dark sun to start
Those are pretty much the two books I can think of
Pretty much everything else we’ve seen so far in UA post-2024 has either been published or lines up with a hypothetical horror book or something at least reminiscent of Dark Sun
im kind of dissapointed there has not been any announcements yet personally
I need a Good chonky new Forgotten realms campaign that can build off of some of these amazing regions in the new setting guide.
it's already been a full year since the last direct
i dont think they have the same Media apparatus as they did before at all
so many new faces at wotc since last year, and many old ones out
a post on dnd beyond would be fine to announce things, everyone looks there
Agreed. I'm just wondering why nothing's been said yet
any large conventions coming up that anyone knows?
How would you guys make a player roll for composure?
Yeah, pax was last weekend
dang. that takes that theory out the window
I mean, over the past couple of years they did a big “DnD Live” event near the beginning of the year to give a sort of roadmap of all the projects they’ll be working on in the following year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we get another one this year. Plus, between the change in leadership and the relatively recent release of the 2024 books, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re just waiting out a bit before announcing what their next big projects are.
that makes me think. Was the roadmap for 2024 finished when they announced the 2025 line up?
well considering that every announced dnd book (game books not novels or other things) are out now
fair, they've gotta keep the hype train going somehow
i just hope we get a full module next year rather than an anthology
Wisdom or Charisma save.
Agreed, several hopefully
I could imagine it as deception too.
Deception could work depending on context
I.e, NPC offends party member, but they’re trying to not look upset
the only theory I have is the venger/red wizards one because of the hints in the FR book, but i know I talk a bit about the guy so I'm trying to lay off a little on that theory
other than that, I don't know if any other hints or teasers to new modules could have been planted
Or hiding your fear, masking your disdain. Though ultimately it would be more Will then, I suppose.
Which leads back to it being a Wis/Cha save.
I can believe that. Depends on how deep you want to lean into it, it could be a Wisdom save (e.g. vs 8+Insight) to try and keep your poker face, and then a Deception check with advantage or disadvantage to play it off.
Going off hints is going to disappoint when you build up expectations, like with the vecna one
Quite.
yeah, Vecna was a missed opportunity situation. Though I suppose with the former it was more just their presence raher than a plot unfurling so I suppose my expectations haven't been raised too much
what if monks had a 1d10 hit die
No, they’re supposed to be super agile but frail
Take the Tough feat if you need more HP.
from my experience I have seen 4 monk players and every time they roll to hit it is like they are rolling a d10 instead of d20
I guess that's why i want them to be less frail
like they usually hit like once every two or three turns (with flurry of blows!)
and it just feels weird
The only hope I really have is the same I’ve had for years: full adventure modules to accompany new setting guides
It's just the dice. They have the same odds as everyone, don't worry. Monk damage tends more towards the average because they tend to roll more attacks at lighter damage than single big hits.
I’m not holding out on said hope, but a man can dream
it just makes monk feel weak to me, since I never saw one perform well
Itd be interesting if eberron got a full one
They promised one years ago, but they haven’t really mentioned it in a long time
thats wild, the monks in my games are unstoppable, Louise of the Luxon Guard in my Exandria game folds Dragons like dirty Laundry
Yeah I’ve never had an issue with monks at my tables
Depends on how you rate performance. They've got abilities other martials haven't, defensive features, superlative mobility. A monk that just swaggers up to the enemy to apply fists isn't using their full toolbox.
I had one do a backflip over a ledge onto the second floor balcony of a room above the balcony of the room they were currently in.
The only time I’ve seen monks falter at my tables is when the monk just wants to focus on hitting the boss a bunch and not using the multiple other features they have that aren’t directly damage dealing
They do not perform badly all the time, I promise.
if you can't speed up killing the enemy in any way, no matter how flash or fancy your tools are you are gonna do bad
Oh wait we're talking DPR?
They can kill an enemy pretty quickly in some scenarios. I also wouldn't use DPR as a total judgement for how a class works in combat. It isn't just about the damage.
This feels like a pretty close-minded way to look at how combat works in D&D. By this same logic, a healing-forward cleric, like a Life cleric, isn’t good in combat because they focus more on keeping their allies up than they do on damaging their enemies.
Open Hand.
Want someone to be clear to move out of danger? Addle. Need to open a gap or force an opponent into a huddle for an AOE? Push. Want to drop a big target to get dogpiled? Topple.
Your DPR is only part of your contribution to the party's combat effectiveness.
- Monks can definitely do damage
- This really is a bad take when you have really powerful Support classes
Hello there guys! Im artist and i produce miniatures! is this group good for sharing my artworks?
I think you may have misread my message lol
thanks a lot val!
I was going to say nvm because a Lich was going to come say something that would've been definitively correct. Take their word, not mine, I don't live here.
that's probably what you're looking for
Yep #dnd-minis for minis and #dnd-arts-and-crafts ! Be sure to check the pins and channel description for the rules!
I can't imagine the table this happened, beacuse generally, I have never seen a Monk played bad. Including my own.
Tbf, you can play something pretty poorly in combat, that's just objective. Though if your attention is more on RP, then it probably has purpose for being poor and in its execution of being done poorly is thematically correct.
Is that like the best support subclass for Monk?
I love playing characters unoptimally for the sake of RP!
i'd rather say that's bad luck than anything to do with monks being bad
wait what fr?
My cleric, for example, he can only cast necromancy and abjuration magic.
He never was allowed to explore much in magic outside of the domain of abjuration growing up, and barely knows anything about the other schools, and even in his exposure to the godly magic that would allow for access to these spells, he has innate trouble understanding and executing them consciously and without guilt.
Necromancy is the exception because it is literally his god's big thing.
idk i have been told constantly that healing is mid to ok at best with a full on build and that dealing damage will always be better then healing and the only good time to use it is either when they are downed to insta pick them up with healing word or if you are that one cleric subclass that lets you use the max possible roll instead of rolling for a heal
though 2024 version made me consider it more
The right healing/support build is just as effective in combat as the right martial build, even if the character DPR is low
Not saying a full healing build could kill a full martial build, but it would take a while I presume, mainly because of how much healing they would be doing.
This is why so many games (many of which are based on D&D) have “roles” within the party
Not all of the characters in a group deal a boatload of damage, but that doesn’t mean everybody else in the party is less effective
Clerics can be much more than healbots
This doesn't even matter, PVP is no measure of anything because the game isn't designed around it.
Refer to this.
The whole of the game typically does not just adhere to combat.
The whole of the game is RP, because even combat is RP.
Yeah!
Don't confuse "RP" for "social."
I did not.
I think some of my favorite RP is non-social based RP. I'm really into thematic scenarios, yk?
Not even just, but also intimate as well as intellectual focuses on topics and discussion. Discussion as in discourse, not literal conversation.
Tavern Brawler says
Damage Rerolls. Whenever you roll a damage die for your Unarmed Strike, you can reroll the die if it rolls a 1, and you must use the new roll.
If your unarmed strike is enhanced to do an extra 1d4 and both are 1s can you reroll both one time?
That'd be on the dm; tavern brawler assumes no homebrew, so only the one die is rerolled as its singular
Bot an unreasonable ruling to reroll both, but there's no ability in the game that it needs to account for currently
the enlarge spell gives you an extra d4 of damage, so thats not nesssisarily homebrew
Does it actually say you must use it? Why's that a restriction?
I don't understand why WotC nerfed Plans/Infusions known for Artificer
I don’t really see it as a nerf, even if it’s very different from what it was in 2014
What happened is that they are no longer called Infusions. Instead their former infusions were made into regular magic items that they can now create just like they did before. It's basically a name change, with the added benefit that now things like Returning weapons are added to the the list of magic items everyone can get.
Yeah, it’s really not all that different than it was before. A bunch of the old infusions that weren’t magic item replications were either turned into magic items for the purpose of replicating, or the features granted by said magic items were turned into Artificer class/subclass features.
Or in the case of Homunculus Servant, got turned into a spell instead.
Is ruby of war mage good on arcane trickster 2014?
What are yalls thoughts on doing campaigns entirely solo, dm and party
I don't care about the name change, I care that the maximum known (not active) went down
I am told this is called "writing a book"
But in all seriousness: One-player campaigns can be good if you're willing to surprise yourself and go with what the dice tell you.
all of my high level artificers lost track of how many they had past 6, and i have had artificers in level 20 campains 3 times, this is fine
Hello
Huh, you know I hadn't noticed that but how often are you switching up your infusions and using .. 12 .. different infusions over the course of a game?
@humble cairn is ruby of the war mage good on a 1/3 caster without a focus in their base?
Rogues usually have a hand free so its not a big deal i would say for the ruby
When i was playing Artificer, I had 2 or 3 I would always use and the rest would be niche stuff that I prepared based on scenario
Are you specifically building a sword&board character?
No, a rapier/crossbow one
Then I wouldn't waste a magic item choice on that, just get a component pouch.
Darn, I didn't realize other people were having a hard time tracking 12 infusions known.
It felt much easier to track than Druid wild shape or prepared spell casting in general to me
Alrighty.
The other reason I don’t mind Artificers having less available “plans” now is because they have features that allow them do things destroy one for a returned spell slot. Now that you have less Plans, it makes the decision to burn one to regain a spell slot more impactful
they mostly just locked in their build and the rest did not matter
I think the Plans are also built a little more around the Artificer using the Magic items, not so much them sharing said Magic items.
Like you can share your replicated items, but the idea seems to feel more like Artificer gets priority when it comes to using them, whereas in 2014 Artificers could make more infused items and spread them out across the entire party and hold onto a couple of items that exclusive to them
The amount of plans active stays the same, it's the amount that they can choose from when selecting which ones are active for the day is lower.
That’s still not a bad thing imo
Especially considering that list will grow as more magic items are introduced into the game
In my campaign we use bonus actions for using healing potions. Is it possible to have a baboon familiar summoned from find familiar to use its bonus action to give you a potion?
Because often times you can just replicate any Common/Uncommon items available, so as more of those items because available in the game, the more options will be available to pick from.
Sure, but why not just use it from your inventory?
The list of magic items that they can choose from to decide what they know grows, and the amount active stays the same, but the amount they actually know is lower.
Also a baboon can’t carry that many potions
It's more akin to reducing how many spells a wizard has in their spell book without changing how many they can prepare and constantly adding more to the overall list.
I am guessing this is 2014 rules?
Since it is specified for the bonus action healing potions in your group.
Unless you mean 2024 then all potions are bonus actions.
I suppose it’s a matter if the version of find familiar has any restrictions on magic item use
Again, I don’t really see an issue, but to each their own
prepared spells are no longer tied to abilitie scores eather and are a set number per level, so this has had some changes too
There's effectively 3 lists. It's the second list that got reduced while the 3rd stayed the same.
- The magic items that an Artificer can choose to know
- The magic items that an Artificer knows
- The magic items that an Artificer has active from the known list
Yeah, it seems to be kind of a universal design choice that doesn’t seem like a big deal to me
The wizard was just meant to be an example of another class with effectively 3 different lists to keep in mind, not the exact numbers per list. The class spell list, the spells in their spellbook, and the spells they actually prepared from their spellbook. Artificers' Replicate Magic Item is like that, where they have a list of items they can choose to know, the items they know, and the items they have active from the known list.
@frail lintel please do not randomly ping users who are not actively speaking in the channel.
I don’t think it’s a specific calculation, it’s just more are available as you level up
Generally it was class level + attribute modifier
Not gonna lie, I kind of prefer that.
its on each class level up chart as a fixed number in the new rules
Say I go down or if I want to flurry.
But yeah, I find it weird that WotC nerfed list 2 without touching list 3 (need to do a side-by-side comparison for list 1)
- The magic items that an Artificer can choose to know
- The magic items that an Artificer knows
- The magic items that an Artificer has active from the known list
looking at it, almost assuredly not a simple formula bts
gives more per level early, fewer later
its less punishing to have a low spellcasting stat now, which i am going to experiment with in my next hardcore 3d6 campaign
which class, i was looking at sorcerer
Hello everyone
hello!
What are y'all's favorite classes
Fancy
You know I half expected to find a heated conversation on automation and stuff
It's been like this often those last few days
arcane trickster rogue
makes sense, they are very magical
Fighter! 💪
fighter is a bit basic let's be real; but sorcerers or warlocks are awesome
paladin is cool
battle master is cool, it's practically a spellcaster
Warlock? Monk? Ranger? Paladin? Wizard? One of those
My least favourites are rogue, sorcerer, barbarian and artificer. Oh, and blood hunter but that doesn't count
Wouldn't be caught dead playing one of those
That discount spellcaster
How many level 1s in theory would it take to defeat a Wraith (CR 5 creature)?
In theory 1
Noice
What's the catch
i think the rng is the catch
BONK
Excluding extreme lucky scenarios ig
cool
7-35 damage melee attack that could drain max hp, ability to summon specters from dead corpses, 67 hp
That's a lot
Well on an actual note I have no idea the lvl1 chars can vary in str and rolls. And idk the wrait block ngl
I'd say a lot. If you get hit by the wraith at level 1, you're dead.
And normally my answer to that would be to battle them from range, but they fly. 60 feet of movement
And they go through walls.
according to this thing, 3 l1 fighters could do it https://battlesim-zeta.vercel.app/
no clue how this thing does its math tho so grain of salt
Per the new DMG, you’d need about 20 Level 1 PCs to take on a Wraith. And it would still be a moderate challenge.
Also ya intitive, if the wraith goes before everyone they are all automatically dead
That being said, Tucker’s Kobolds. With that many PCs, you could probably do a decent amount of damage against a single combatant before their turn even starts.
That said, when their turn does come up, there will be casualties.
A lucky fighter with 19 ac and magic initiate wizard for sheild and true strike could solo a wraith if they were lucky
If they were lucky, yeah
Sure, you can solo anything if you only roll 20s and they only roll 1s
Hmm, thinking of ways to justify a single level 1 Paladin could survive an encounter with a Wraith like that in the sea as part of a backstory
Give me that kind of luck, I can take Demogorgon
I use wraitths against level 2 and 3 parties all the time
I could just make up some silly reason like the Wraith retreating for whatever reason before the killing blow
Yeah that thing is nonsense
ya someone showed me this the other day and it seems wildly different then when i just play out encounters as the party to balance stuff, but so does every other tool out there for that matter
if it's in backstory, you can bend the mechanics a little. Maybe they had a few allies who died in the effort? They struck the killing blow, or a damaging enough blow to scare it away.
i think i'll just keep playing out encounters as the party to check balance
Running away?
Running away is always a valid option
whew easy week for my table, event is giving me something they want me to run.
i really don't like running someone else's content ESPECIALLY when i don't get to see it weeks in advance so I can really chew on it.
but oh well, i'll take a gift when i get one.
i usualy design my quests to mean the fleeing is failure
They got dragged and nearly killed
Ran away
Fought one with tons of help
"He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day."
A single level 1 Paladin is still running the risk of taking 21 Necrotic damage from a wraith, which don’t forget also decreases their HP max by the same amount
whenever i got hired to run a con game they allways give me way to much and i spend 10 minuts getting it onto a post it note
my weakness is running content i didn't come up with.
or at least content i can reflavor/chew on
"We're not retreating, we're advancing in another direction!"
i have ran conbat with everything in the monster manual so im ready for anything
yea, but i'm a very narrative-forward kind of GM
I need a compelling reason for why they're hitting whatever they're hitting this week
"Go hit this and get paid" is so weak narratively.
but whatever.
you ever made your players have to defuse a bomb?
at some point, for sure.
The context is that they're on a boat in sea, boat suddenly broke in two so the character was rowing their own boat towards it which is when they saw a wounded Wraith and two severely wounded people
I like Knome's take on it though
so am i, i improvise that on the spot, urgency and motivation are key
Wounded wraith, sick, done. It was partially attacked, you dealt the finishing blows.
i just dislike that the event hasn't even given me the material for what they want me to do on sunday.
Bet
it prolly won't be till saturday evening, or the day of the game before i get my hands on it
but at least it's not the last style of event, which was an unmitigated disaster.
ah thats just normal for my workflow, im not gonna crack open the new chapter of dungeon of the mad mage till i sit down at the shop for the session
i like having all my ducks in a row at least 5 day ahead of time, so i can continue to chew on it and present something i feel really good about
ah, and in the next 5 days i got 5 sessions so each day is new
yeah, i just run the 1 weekly in person game.
my online game is paced and framed entirely different
im running games for over 30 hours a week and prepping for under 2 hours a week on average
Hello
Welp the new forge of the artificer book is shipping to my house. Can’t wait to make another eberron campaign.
I’m sad artificer wasn’t included in based 2024 edition
Since it’s quite an established class now
artificer has never been a "core" class
Cause it isn't a core class
I get that but I mean if it’s meant to be a new edition or the game it would’ve been a nice update, otherwise for ppl who aren’t dms ur kinda just paying for the book to play artificer, again
old artificer still worked, still works
Idk if it’s really an “established class”
and ever since 3.0 when artificer was introduced, it was never a "core class"
It's mostly DMs who buy the books
It isn’t a new edition also
Literally just the game getting patched basically
Also artificer is always released in an Eberron supplement when it's added to a new "edition"
Paladins are tho 😼
Ok?
I put quote around it cause this time it isn't a new edition, but keeping the tradition
he's the #1 paladin fan, so a chance to brag about paladins.
^
My gut says that Artificers are really close to becoming a "core" class, kind of like how- yeah, like how paladins and even monks were later core.
paladin has been core for a long time
Another reason why it's not core is probably due to its complexity
It's a lot of word lunches and misunderstandings
Weren’t Monks and Paladins in the PHB since AD&D?
yuh
Yep
Or was this preAD&D we talking about?
I assume artificer wasn’t in core bc it’s kinda an odd class? Like it’s pretty unique
They were, which is why "core" might be a little misleading. But paladins used to be something you'd progress into rather than take a level 1.
(Actually, now I'm not sure. Let me double check that.)
Artificers as far as I'm aware only exist in FR and Eberron too
Of the 12 core classes, only 1 isn't seen in 1st Edition
And they're pretty synonymous with Eberron
Ye Artificer is kinda not a very normal fit in a lot of places
Warlock, Sorcerer, and what else?
Or were some of them supplemental?
Excuse me, correction, two: 'loks and sorcs, yes
But yeah back then, Paladin and Ranger were subclasses
Warlocks in 2e
Sorcs in 3e
What about Barbarians?
Barbs were in 1e
what are we considering 1e?
I don’t remember Barbarian in my AD&D PHB but that could have been supplemental
Hey yall I recently decided to look into buying minis for my campaign to finally step it up a little so its more "immersive" does anyone know where Id be able to get some affordable minis?
Perhaps #dnd-minis can help you?
Most affordable in the long run would probably be getting a 3D printer and making your own
i bought a box of very cheap prepainted minis off amazon. they're good for generic "human" npc.
But otherwise I buy the ones I need individually from a shop on ebay.
honestly ur best off comissioning a 3d printer in bulk tbh
let me check it out
Minis are insanely expensive if you want unique ones
Do what Gygax did, cheap toys from the dollar store /jk
Honestly yes
any recommendations of 3d printers to get?
how complex would u say a subclass has to be?
I could ask a friend or my brother but you're better off googling
and any advice on adding new skills to basekit classes
I think the best example of how a non-core class becomes core is the warlock. It's recent
Use army men and pennies, etc
complex? Nah. unique, yes.
For example, the "official" Tarrasque mini is 400 dollars
Fr??
Yep
Yea quite pricey imo
im doing a hollowknight game set in a custom kingdom inspired by norse mythology
The warlock could have gotten completely lost among the hundreds of 3rd edition classes, yet it's the one that survived to 4th and 5th edition. Maybe neverwinter nights 2 contributed, but it isn't the only explanation
Most people that use minis ime have someone who 3D prints them
Like my family, my brother and a friend 3D print so they always have minis for their characters
i've spent probably. . . 150? 200 bucks on all my minis, and I've got something that's suitable for just about any occasion.
But i like prepainted
alr ill see if I can find someone locally who can do it ty
Sora, you do realize most minis are pretty cheap, right? It’s only the ones aimed at “collectors” that are ridiculously overpriced
this is quite correct.
I don't really trust the 20 dollar minis from Temu
most minis are relatively cheap because they are GOING to get banged around and probably broken.
thats not bad 100-200 isnt absurdly highh if it does cove rmost occasions
Mind if I dm you?
Pfft, 20$? I’m buying 2-5$ ones at most
yeah MOST of my minis are in the sub 5 bucks range.
im thinking of making a guide for my campaign on some custom mechanics but im a little worried itll either be too plain or get out of handf
Mine are all metal, so they don’t get that banged up
I thought minis were like min of 60 or higher
i.e for those whove played hk, i want to add a nail bounce mechanic
Where are you buying your minis???
If you search Amazon now for "dnd minis", you'll see boxes that have like... 50 assorted minis for like $50. I don't know if that helps.
My brother just bought his own printer to make custom minis
Gucci?
Scams R Us
are y buyin gucci aaa warhammer aaa disney promoted aa figures or summin?
okay, if you're buying warhammer minis... i can see it
Yeah I think I'm thinking of Warhammer minis
innit
boxes of warhammer minis are yeah
Cause it's like 80 dollars for a basic Sisters of Battle set.
Honestly Im still looking for game mainly cause I just dont have time anymore I barely even get my weekends free but im willing to hear you out
thats why i started 3d printing, i have thousands of minis
I wanna get a 3D printer but idk if I'd have the room
Can a paladins mount attack while the paladin is mounted? Speaking of the find steed animal.
@spring light is giving my players a chance to regain spell slots after a kill too op?
Nope
Find steed has some abilities it can use but the mount itself can't actually attack
you want #homebrew
Depends on the chance
ohhhh i cant see it for some reason on the tab mb
There's a certain longbow in bg3 that allows you to regain a level 1 spell slot on crits, and that bow was really bad so probably not
Personally I'd avoid something like that unless it's like gotta roll a 5 or lower on a d100
Cause spell slots exist and are expendable for a reason.
Funny thing: a pseudodragon’s sting isn’t an attack (at least in 2014) so you can use it without an action as a chain warlock
Huh
That’s what I thought but I can’t find it in the players handbook. Can anyone give me a hint 2024?
...what?
I think I should finally do what I thought I'd never do again
Sorry, I meant in 2024
In 2014 is is an attack
How do you post in looking for players?
I should buy Strixhaven, so Silvery Barbs is once again allowed in my games
idk how the book has it worded, but i'm gonna tell ya if it's an attack i'm still gonna rule it as an attack at my table.
Though i also think familiars should get their own actions....
On crits? bruh
current d&d has all but killed familiars because there's no real need to have or use one. which is a shame.
In 2024 it’s just a saving throw within range
No attack roll
huh? familiars get used so much in my games
lucky.
not a single familiar has been in my tables.
nah, i have to keep swatting them like flies
Not every table is the same.
yeah i haven't experienced any Familiar problems tbh. They're basically Help Action machines until they get caught in an AoE
I mean their mounts
yeah, help action in combat, scouting outside of combat, blindsight with bats, cats doing all sorts of things
Really? How?
yeah idk. they're reasonably powerful given the level of spell
I thought pact of the chain warlocks could resummon on their familiar for free :(
does not waive the mateial compotnet
nah they still have to use the Material components
damn what for?
That’s why I said I thought
because the monsters get annoyed with the owls in their face
no one ever needs a familiar, but they can do a lot allright
Mostly familiars are a good item dump
Just give attunement items nobody is using to the familiar. Feels better than wasting them
And if the item comes with the ability to cast a spell...
ah, i never had anyone try to attune a familiar to a magic item, good way to lose things
Most familars can’t wield itens
Some can, but like… a cat isn’t going to be able to hold a wand of fireball.
If you're giving that item to the familiar, it means you were already okay with losing it
some folks dont have that level of forethought
can a dragon count as a warlock's patron? im making one of the main villians in my campaign a dragon and i wondered if the idea of them having like servants to send after the party would make sense
I gotta say, I thought it was an easy bet to make.
It definitely should qualify. There isn't a Dragon subclass for Warlocks, so they'll need to simulate it with another subclass
It certainly beats letting the item stay useless in the bag or selling it
And if you give your familiar something like a ring that lets them cast lightning bolt, things become a whole lot easier
i have defintily had people give the necklace of fireballs to a familiar and send them down a hole
iirc there’s a line about flavoring the fiend as dragon fire instead somewhere
You're still bound by the hard rule that familiars can't attack, so that somewhat limits your spells
what would u say is the closest? and the dragon is a blue dragon so should i just give said warlock like alot of lightning based spells?
With a blue dragon, there really isn't anything that fits. Maybe fiend?
Fiend has a lot of fitting things for a red dragon
Draconic bloodline sorcerer or drakewarden ranger may suit your needs better than warlock but yeah fiend would be closest
Some of the fire spells could be swapped for lightning spells
I'm about to doom my future games /j
By getting into hell and killing an absurd amount of demons?
by buying strixhaven so silvery barbs will be on my allowed content list from then on
You monster
For the Firebreathing Dragons, I would do Fiend. For a Blue Dragon, there isn't a great Warlock Subclass that fits. I might suggest Genie for Djinn cuz I think that does Lightning stuff, but you're pretty SOL for a Blue Dragon Warlock sub.
what tool is responsible for crafting out of bones?
Depends on what you are making
Stuff™
Bones is a material after all. How you use the material is what the tools are for
making larger bones, clearly
I will make a tarrasque out of those villagers yet
lol
but no, i thought about minor trinkets
Maybe jewelers then
Depends, but for larger monsters I'd prolly call it Mason's Tools
Like if you wanted earrings or amulets of bone then that’s jewelers.
But if you wanted armor and shields then smithing is likely the way.
ya they are metal
Ngl clockwork amulet fire af
These are hostile NPCs yes? You dont have to find a subclass. Just give them features and spells you want
Dont let player character classes limit NPC variety
Give them the dark shadow alchemist class
what are people's thoughts here on the idea of "circus parties" in their campaigns
What's a circus party?
a party of PCs composed mostly or entirely out of non-standard fantasy ancestries (basically anyone that isn't a human, elf, dwarf, halfling), especially in a setting where said non-standard fantasy ancestries are very rare or atypical
Sounds pretty interesting
e.g. a party with a kobold, minotaur, genasi, and a githyanki would be a circus party
100% makes sense
Circus party sounds like a party of bards tbh
Bards, monks,fighters, and Druids
People who struggle finding others of their race will likely bond together if they meet
Also rangers, a traditional member of a circus
chat if a raveloft game was made then what would the campaign of it be
Ranger is the ring master
Barbarian for rage strength feats
The big muscly guy lifting iron bars is a staple of classic circus
Rogue as the guy who robs the audience. Or mastermind rogue running the circus
And magician because sleight of hand is good for that
Or throwing the knives
Sleight of hand is 50% of tricks
the monk is the dude who juggles everything
Tbh I am think about what species I want to play as a rogue
Don't forget about the artificer the guy who made all of the inventory, the circus tent and the stage
changeling rogue would go so hard
If the dm allow it
Ngl magic users fit a circus the least
I think they fit a lot
The only classes i dont see fit that well are fighter and wizard and maybe artificer
Ranger/druid for animals, warlock and sorcerer for flashy magic, bard for the crowd, rogue for sleight of hand and maybe knife throwing etc, monk for acrobatics and feats of endurance maybe, barbarian as a strongman
Wizard could do flashy magic too but i think the flavour of most wizards flows with it worse and charisma isnt their core stat
Illusionist Wizard
I admit I hate those kinds of parties.
I firmly believe PCs have to be part of the world they live in. People who have a stake in the societies, the politics and the culture and who are a product of their environment
PCs should inform the world, I think. Not be exceptions to it
I don’t mind it. Adventurers are already super rare no matter what setting you’re in anyways, so if they’re all playing species that are super rare I don’t think it’s the end of the world.
They can still be natives
Noone said they dont have stakes just for not being the same race
Of course but the stereotypical circus party consists of people who have nothing to do with the world.
Sucks when your friend is the DM and you get into a argument with him outside of the DnD session about unrelated things and they decide to be childish and kick you out of the Campaign server
i can understand it. i definitely don't agree with that last part though, since PCs are supposed to be metanarratively different from everyone else on the sole basis of being the main characters and driving agents of the story
Sure if you find a way to make it work, that works. The exotic species do not necessarily disconnect. But they often do
Would a multiclass warlock / cleric character be interesting? Have to play balance of power between their deity and their patron. Surely it's not optimal but I think it could be fun
Sure
oh right circus. i thought this was just about the species
Yeah, characters who don’t make sense in the world are a no-go for me (which is part of the reason I’m hesitant about letting players bring premade characters into a campaign), but their species doesn’t really matter aside from a couple of edge cases.
most of my players have an idea what their charicter is before they join the game, as long as its using the options i have greenlit its fine
Like I wont let someone play a Warforged or Kalashtar in a non-Eberron campaign because their lore is so closely tied to the lore of the world that unless I literally just drag and drop from Eberron into another setting, they don’t feel like they make a lot of sense.
And i dont want to make Warforged just… robots.
youd have to homebrew it
i have had the ebbron book greenlit in a lot of campaings and never ran a ebberon campaign
Hey so I am new to dnd, if I find one of those campaigns on StartPlaying would it be best to inform the DM before I join that I do have a toddle and baby so they be in the background sometimes when we play? Or would it just be better to not really since I don’t have a seperate room for my pc?
as a professional dm that is on Start playing, i would appricate the heads up, but having a baby nearby is not an issue, so long as you can mute your mic if they are making noise
Like I don’t want people to feel uncomfortable if I have to have my camera on an my toddler is playing in the background or I am holding my baby to feed him
Oh most definitely I have the Elgato Wave 3 I can just like tap it to mute it
Id recommend talking to the DM of the campaign youre looking to join. Some wont be okay with it, but others might not mind.
having a like, kid sitting next to you asking questions every few minuts, that has been an issue though
id give a headsup and talk it through with the table
You won’t know if you don’t ask
and if you dont ask, and end up with people who dont like it, youll have a problem
Yeah that I would try to avoid and my girlfriend is usually good at wrangling her if I am doing that, I would try to select a campaign that starts closer to her bed time
one of the old DMG's does say that getting babysitters is a best practice, and i agree with that as a Dad of 2 and a DM, if my kids are in the room i cant run my game
my kids are older, and would want to play too, but this is adult time
thats why my games are either after their bed time, when they are in school or i have left the house to go run at the shop
Unfortunately financially that wouldn’t work I mean I am hoping in a couple months she’ll start doing sleepovers at grandmas once in a while, she’s 2.5 yrs, trust me, me and my girlfriend would love a reliable bay sitter so we could have late nights again
Yeah, taking care of kids mid-session is harder on the DM than on players imo. DMs already have to focus on running a session, I imagine wrangling kids while you do so is tough
DMing kids is the true pain of DnD
yeah im a full time stay at home dad, i need my DND games to be for adults as i need there to be a difference in the two parts of my day
Okay so I should definitely maybe just choose ones after her bed time, I’m on the east coast so maybe if I find a dm on the west coast that might work cause I work a 9-5
Players can kinda shut off their mic for a few seconds here and there doesn’t disrupt a session as much as when DMs have to do it
Lmfao do real
She’s also at that stage where she can repeat EVERYTHING
Yeah like me muting my mic wouldn’t be a problem if I am not currently like my character talking or something
But I saw that some people want Cameras on and unfortunately my pc is in my living room
yeah my sessions online at night are usualy <t:1764730800:T> or <t:1764732600:T>
and my kids bet time is an hour before that so i have wiggle room for issues
just got 3 spammers in my DMs from this server in the space of a few minutes. Wow.
yeah they have been busy
how do i never get these
bots scan the chat for keywords i bet
Why does the notification for the meeting thingy immediately add me into the call with max volume (my phone is on mute)
ive always been insanely blessed with not getting DMs from strangers to the point where i feel i want some
Your kids go to bed quick enough? I’m so jealous when I put my daughter to bed I have to read her line 3 stories then she wants me to read one of my books (Eragon, Percy Jackson and I recently found out I can’t read 4th Wing to her lol)
also do you have dms from strangers turned off?
this includes all kinds of servers and sorts of strangers. they just dont go for me
I don’t
never have. unless a recent update changed this, nope
Just turned it off, which is a shame
no, its a 45 minute process that starts at about <t:1764725400:T>
but its a routine so they go along with it
I know a guy that bans warforged outside Eberron, tieflings and aasimars outside of Planescape.
Same for genasi and the likes
One time I was playing DnD with my ex friend and my daughter decided to yell at me”Stinky DaDa” lmfao
I can understand no Warforged outside of Eberron, but no “planetouched” races outside of Planescape feels excessive to me.
Unless it's a theme campaign I don't see much reason to ban aasimar or tieflings.
im running a one shot tommorow with everything greenlit. i got a centaur monk a tortle warlock a human sorcerer a warorged barb a Shadarkai fighter and an undecided player
Pre-made charaters into a campaign... what?
I missed something it appears
im strongly against banning things from the PHB
if you dont own all the extra books thats one thing, but the PHB is the baseline
Soul knife rogue is interesting
Agreed. Especially with the new PHB, where the species are written in a setting agnostic way that allows them to fit anywhere. Even if they’re more rare in some worlds than others.
Is there any books off of D&D Beyond I should buy before I look for a campaign in StartPlaying?
just the PHB i'd say
the DM should be able to provide things if you are playing
then it strongly depends on the setting
I'd recommend the PHB. I would also recommend not buying it on D&D Beyond
not everyone uses dnd beyond, you may not need to buy any books on there
i reccomend having a physical copy of the PHB as a player thouugh for sure
yea i think, of all the platforms i've seen DND played on, people use Beyond the least
like usually it's either theater of the mind or it's a VTT like Owlbear or Foundry
Wait you can do three attacks with soul knife
Depends! If you're running certain settings, some of the PHB species are simply extinct.
See I know plenty of people who play using DDB. It’s just not the greatest platform for anything other than character sheet building atm.
Finding a physical copy can be hard if you don't live in a big country. Also expensive
Or unavailable due to the campaign's story
Though I am a fan of how their Maps feature is coming along
Is that Players Hand Book?
Yes.
yeah, never played in a game like that, all the settings published for 5e by wotc have everything in the PHB and more
How fun is Tomb of Annilation to run?
if someone has the money to pay for sessions on Start playing, i have faith that they can find a players handbook
Well, there is Dragonlance. Which says Dragonborn don’t exist (as they canonically don’t exist in the setting), but gives insight on how to allow a player to play one if they really wanted to.
I very strongly recommend getting a physical version rather than relying on DDB.
so much fun
Probably one of the most fun
Agreed. We had a haregon in our curse of strahd campaign
sure they do, the draconians are a huge part of dragonlance, its just a bit different.
Which version? There’s a 2014 and 2024?
Damn I would hate that.
the new one is what you should be getting if you dont have either in this day and age
Perhaps. I'm playing in a paid game and could definitely afford a digital phb but our dm shares one. To buy a physical copy though it would be like thrice the price if not more
But I think I kind of despise Harengons as a concept
It was pretty fun actually. They died though
Okay thank you so much, sorry for all the questions lmfao
Well, the book itself says that Dragonborn as we know them don’t exist in the setting. That said, one of the suggestions in the book was to play a Dragonborn as a reskinned Draconian who found a way to defect from Tiamat and her forces.
a DM on start playing should make it clear exactly what books they are using for the game, i know i do
I think my fist character is gonna be like a Bard Austin Powers and widower
Normally a session 0, or even pre-session 0, should start with the list of material allowed
i seldom ever play the standard fantasy races personally
Half Elves/Orcs are also gone
So sad
And the list of optional rules that will be used
What ancestries/species come in the new Ebberron book? Warforged and what else?
Exactly, its a bit different then the usual vibes but its doable
Yep, that’s what I said. Technically Dragonborn don’t exist in Dragonlance, but it’s not like you can’t make it work.
Warforged, Kalashtar, Khoravar, Shifter, Changeling, and I believe one other that’s escaping me at the moment
its 5, you got em
oh nice the gangs all there, I thought they left one out
Changelings and Warforged are fire ngl
the real shame is that Warforge werent in Monsters of the Multiverse when all the other ebberon ones were
