i ALWAYS recommend java/C/C++ if you're dead-set on getting good, because they force you to learn fundamentals to be able to do like ANYTHING, and then you can repurpose those fundamentals on more "practical" languages like php/py/js. however, python's a decent starting point if you want to have a bit of a smoother learning curve
