After talking to a lot of other players on my server we have all pretty much decided that this new Flashpoint event will ruin the game for anyone who cannot dedicate most of their life playing STFC. That said everyone I spoke with are going to stop spending any money on STFC with a very good possibility of quitting the game entirely.
This would be a very good time for the development team working on Flashpoint to cut their losses before losing thousands of players.

But in general, skipping research is bad if it's appropriate to your level
Without the artifacts and favors out there now, you could easily skip over a 10% to 50% hull research node, but skipping over research nodes around 1500, or more hull, would be a bad idea.

The answer isn't really cut and dry. It depends on your ops level, whether you are a free player, low spender, moderate spender, etc..
Some can safely be ignored while others would be a great detriment to you if you didn't do them. You can always ask people in your alliance, or on this discord server, if something is safe to skip or not.
The game also throws material at you, through events, for the previous tier you were in. So if you skipped a bunch of G2 research, once you enter G3, the game is going to give you a lot of G2 material through events.
I skipped a chunk of G5 research, and I was easily able to finish it within a few weeks after entering G6
But to answer your question, yes, you will be completing most of that research eventually 😁 keep in mind, that research has grown over six years. So you're not expected to complete it overnight especially if you're a new player

from my perspective (late g5) i can say, once you got all the specialty ships and are done with most of the late g3 loops it becomes easier. bajor is still a great material and shippart source but you dont need to farm daily maxpull of jem hadar anymore. doing those solo armadas with a cube and cutting 2-3 enemies after every armada makes it quite enjoyable.
mirror becomes easy the moment you can mine with your nsea, farming omega trellium on sunday should suffice for maxpulls for 7 days.
the gorn eviscerator is a different beast. either you go and farm there daily or you tune it down from 3 chests to just 2 and enjoy a happy farmfree week (once a week a full cargo should suffice)
voyager and monaveen get archived from ops 51 onwards, big help to get rid of hirogenhunt and mining horror.
talios.... yeah, it takes time to reach ops 58 to archive that but on the other hand, you can refine so many nanos that you are finished way before.

krenims are done the moment you get your favours higher and your relativity researches. the amount of loot you get from these invaders far surpasses what you need.
same with revenant and continuum, hitting up and you will drown in type 03 directives. polygon are hard to manage, i give you that.

New 61`s today have options going to 70. At launch rushing to 66 was the smart move skipping the UC. But for those fortunate enough to have their vindicator maxed for their ops, it’s a whole other game now. The T15 cube is still vital imo, but the vindicator is truly amazing in pve, and can do your daily’s all the way to 70 easy. Definitely options

I start 3-4 of them all the time. I never run out of planetary charts. Do you have the reliant? You can't do a lot of those away missions unless you have a reliant at a fairly decent level.

You need 2400 to max pull the charts. Plus the uncommen every 1.5 days.

I just leave my reliant in a low level system and do the khan challenges everyday, and then do the FC khan upgrade which gives tons of Joachim affinity. Then I upgrade joachim, and since he's maxed, it all converrts to common credits which is an unlimited supply

Yes, you have to be careful and speed them up right. It may not work EVERY day, but it does every other day.
But if you do it right, you won't EVER run out of PC

After mk2 should use something like Picard bev Demarco as bridge crewing for the polygons.
