Your mitigation will increase up to your ships full bonus, depending on your ship. A sally for example maxes at 300%. After that the defense stat don’t matter UNLESS you have an officer that uses stats. So like Zhou would increase mitigation even more than just your bonus with stacked defense (until you get to game max mitigation at 71.x%)
So you might have a base mitigation stat, then could max ship bonus with defense stat, then add zhou mitigation with more defense stats

Check if you get to your max ship bonus. It won’t go higher than your bonus. Separately, I’ve found it has trouble calculating officer bonus stats. If you’re using an officer like Zhou you may have to hit a hostile and see your mitigation amounts

And lastly, the game maxes total mitigation somewhere between 71-72%. With all your ship, officer, research/favor bonuses, mitigation can never go bigger than that. So max mitigation in pve and PvP should always be your goal there. Once it’s maxed focus on other pieces

yeah G3 has been smoothed out quite nicely and G4 is improving too but G5 is still very rough progression wise with a lot of high hurdles and some content that was clearly designed with paying players with primes etc. in mind

I actually avoided the silent hostiles for a while after they were introduced. Now I'm fairing better against them, but they were really difficult at first.

As someone who was 51 with Xindi and 52 with Silents, both were doable doing just 1 chests. This was with a T4 Ent A and a Talios that was maxed for my ops.
