You can change shape keys with vertices like you-know-who has it. This can also be changed just for static purposes as a more subtle configuration option. This doesn't make much sense in a blender, but for a whimsical unit, it's better to use as few bones as possible in the model, so this simplification makes only optimization sense there.

• In theory, this can also be changed with scripts that connect not the bones to each other, but the vertices of the model. This is more suitable for the interactions and physicality of the object so that it directly feels the pressure and so on. But I've only seen this xxxx in very elaborate rigs.

Optimization really matters for game models or VTuber models, sure, but if it's for the sake of art and rendering, it doesn't really matter. I think see your point but I'm not a game developer, I make 3D animations so optimizing armatures isnt really necessary. And by the way I used the game-ready rig, and it's heavily optimized in terms of bones and such. There's just a single bone for the ear as I really didnt want to put much effort on a little detail.

If the rig was production-ready, then I'd probably rig some parts with Bendy Bones or Spline IK (along with drivers or complex constraints if I need an advanced rig)
Regarding giving Shape Keys to the ears, I'd say it's unoptimal since they're gonna have real-time physics. (and you could waste more time by doing so, but you do you)

It's an addon for Blender that allows you to turn multiple objects in a collection on and off. In addition, they are keyframed at the same time. you have to have the collection selected and then press collection on or off. the addon is visible in the sidebar when installed
