modified engine code (fork in this case) doesnt necessarily mean performance focus, but could refer to stuff like star citizen, adding features that are required for game to function, modifying features around your game design yadi yada

that being said UE5 is often shit because its often shit and all of those new UE5 rendering features are fancy and easy to work with, but arent really performance focus, such as the system to generate LOD levels for assets => its far from perfect and causes overrendering and wastes GPU time and thus hurts performance, in other words, the OG optimisation methods that arent unique to UE5 will make your game perform better than if u used all of those fancy nanite, lod generators, etc etc systems

it's mostly to do with how responsive your inputs feel. if you get really competitive then you can tell small differences (to a very minimal degree) up to like 120fps. 60 is fine for like. 95% of people. even 40.
