My Review for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of the Zone (Part 1):

(Spoilers have been blacked out, proceed at your own risk)

Sound Design/Soundtrack:

Positives:

• Sound design for the guns is really well done, nice and punchy the suppressors sound realistic.

• The soundtrack is excellent and using "Dirge for the Planet" as the end credits song was a superb choice.

Negatives:

• Audio-mixing for dialogue is terrible, especially for Crow who wounds like you're listening to him from underwater, and the dude giving the briefing in Rostok sound like he was drunk.

Visuals:

Positives:

• Some shots (namely at 24:21, 39:35, 48:30 and 58:56) look really good, but 39:35 is ruined by poor lighting, and 48:30 doesn't feel like something out of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., it seems more like something out of the SCP universe.

Negatives:

• Film is too dark. Funnily enough, the nighttime incursion scene (which was actually shot at night) has better lighting than a lot of other scenes. Most egregious examples of poor lighting are:

1. The sequence where we're first introduced to Rostok, which looks like a Berlin rave because of the weird particle effects on the fire barrels.

2. The sequence where they're walking into the sewer pipe(?) and the following room with the pipe works. Multiple instances where my screen was literally black.

3. The sequence where they're clearing the hallways of the Army Warehouses(?). Multiple instances where my screen was literally black.

4. The scene that shows us the silhouette of || the giant brain head thing ||.

My Review for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of the Zone (Part 2):

Costumes:

Positives:

• I like that they tried to modernize the look of the mercenaries.

• The overall visual look of Crow's outfit was pretty good, as well as the outfits of the Bandits and Monolith.

Negatives:

• The Dutyers(?) in the briefing scene at Rostok look like they're wearing red cultist robes, I partially blame this on the scene's poor lighting.

• While I do appreciate the attempt to modernize the equipment of the Mercs, their costume design is just too much of a detachment from their designs in the original games and too "Tacticool".

• The fabric on the majority of the costumes looks incredibly cheap and of poor quality. While lower-budget compared to Hollywood, with the amount of money that was raised for this film, it feels a bit inexcusable.

• Despite my praise for the overall look of his outfit, the baggy-ass pants on Crow's suit make him look like he's wearing pajamas.

• I had no idea Brain was an Ecologist until I saw his patch, his costume design doesn't have enough visual distinction that makes it clear he's an Ecologist.

Writing:

Positives:

• I thought the idea behind the ||giant evil brain head thing|| was cool, original and creative

• While I don't personally think it makes the best sense as an explanation for anomalies, the idea of them being memetic and effectively spawned by the collective unconscious of the Noosphere is an interesting take on their potential origins.

Negatives:

• Dialogue could get a bit too cringey at times, some of the swearing felt unnecessary and out of place.

• While I love the idea of the ||giant evil brain head thing||, it felt kind of out of place for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and almost seemed like it was ripped out of the SCP universe.

• We're given no explanation for the ground-to-air cannon fire and in-air missile explosions in the background of the night incursion. It's just there and never explained.

My Review for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of the Zone (Final Part)

Cinematography:

Positives:

• The aforementioned shots at 24:21, 39:35, 48:30 and 58:56 all look fantastic

Negatives:

• Certain sequences have too many out of place and inexplicable jump-cuts (Nighttime incursion and the fight in the pipe works respectively)

Final Overall Thoughts:

While I don't hate the film, it left me rather disappointed and underwhelmed. I do appreciate the efforts to add onto established lore and build atmosphere, but these instances ultimately fell short and were overshadowed by the film's greater focus on the action and gunfights.

I think that the creators of the film are fans of more than just Anomaly/GAMMA, as in the Behind the Scenes video it was revealed that the 1979 Stalker film was used as an inspiration. However the final product does feel like it was tainted by the "tacticool" aesthetic that the director and producers seem to be such big fans of.

If it hadn't been set in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe and was instead set in the SCP universe or similar, I would probably have viewed it more favorably. Even with them watching the 1979 Stalker, it just feels like the people behind this film don't really get what S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is about and what makes it special.

Give it a watch if you really want to, but you're not missing out on that much if you don't.

Shadow of the Erdtree gave me a lot of the same vibes and atmosphere I got from S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and lots of people were decrying that as boring too.
