First one was unique and paved the way for many future titles to follow in it's footsteps. I did enjoy it, but would never replay it now, I tried once but it had aged. 2 was honestly just ... yuck. They removed a lot of the stuff that made 1 fun. Things you don't normally think of as fun like inventory management, ammo types etc. So it was nice to have all that return with slick polish in the two later titles.

Looking at Clear Sky, for example, with the Vintar VS in the Great Swamps early in the game, you don’t have the ammo or money to repair it, and it’s the same with late-game weapons in Call of Pripyat. Weapon upgrades serve as a way to balance things out.

Not advocating for it! But game piracy is a bit deeper than just cataloguing it as stealing. Think about a few scenarios.

Guy 1 has no money (wouldn't have played your game via legal copy) > He plays a pirated copy of the game > He talks positively about this game to other people that, otherwise, wouldn't have considered trying that game out

Guy 2 has a crappy system > He plays a pirated copy of the game to see if it runs alright > Game runs fine so he buys it to get all the privileges that come with "owning" it (Achievements, updates, etc)

Guy 3 just pirates it because he just... pirates stuff. > Ends up liking the game so much that he feels compelled to pay for it and have it on his library.

I've been on the skin of the last two. There are many indie game studios that advocate for piracy if you lack the resources to play their games because they see the value on someone that wouldn't have played their creation otherwise.

As I said, it's quite a complex topic really. For me, Stalker is one of my favourite games, so I'm 100% buying it, and keeping it if it really works well on PC. I'm really really hoping it does. I want to feel like spending the money was worth it.

This little talk reminds me that I originally downloaded a copy of Cyberpunk to try it out last year, 3 years after the infamous release, and I FREAKING LOVED IT SO MUCH that I felt guilty, went to Steam and bought the copy right away. When Phantom Liberty DLC dropped I got the copy immediately, so that's 60 plus € that I spent on Cyberpunk 2077 due to initially pirating it to "try it out" without the stress of the Steam 2 hours policy.
