Well, there is a reason to cap your FPS also, if only because you use less energy and don't have big spikes. It also contributes to the longevity of the card that it doesn't have to work unnecessarily harder than necessary just to get 200+fps, even though it can achieve an absolutely playable 60fps with less power.

I used to do stuff like that sorta. For SoC, I knew where all the mutants came from (other levels where they spawned) how they entered a level, where they went to and what type they were. However this only worked for SoC, since the latter two games were more spawn on demand. This is why SoC is the best of the three, for what you can make the game do, when you know where men and mutants travel through multiple levels to get to their destination.

I kind of miss Clear Sky. I played the heck out of SoC and CoP but I just can't get Steam Clear Sky to play without insta crashes ):

It's supposed to help with crashes. When you say insta crashes do you mean you can't walk 100 feet or it crashes a time or two in an hour of playing?

Well iirc, and it's been a minute, if it didn't crash at the menu starting a new game, it would crash shortly after loading in. I think I tried a year or so ago, Paid $9 on steam but it just wasn't stable for me at all so refunded it.

The other two played fine. CoP being the most stable for me

Sounds like you may have gotten your game settings too high. Clear Sky has sunrays that really tax your graphics and may need to be adjusted before you start your game. GSC toned down some of those features for better performance for CoP, due to a lot of people complaining about that.

I literally had to buy a new graphics card in 2008, since my graphics card that played SoC in 2007 couldn't handle it.

Yeah that was one of the visual features I loved most about the upgraded engine where the godrays in CS lol. I would think a 4090 would handle it but it might be a deeper issue than gpu performance.

I upgraded to Vista back then just so I could run it on Dx10. It played fine for me then. Not sure what the issue is now other than the fact that it is through Steam this time.

It never hurts to fiddle around with the game settings to increase performance, if something keeps making your game crash. When I say increase performance I'm saying decrease the slider bars to lower settings.

There are no Ultimate Physical Editions on GoG. They're all gone as far as I know. You can buy the Ultimate Edition which is Digital only.
