I know some of the anker banks you can also force a port to output but idk if it would just auto shut off after a few hours

Question: anyone have any experience on a low end gaming laptop for travel that actually charges on a plane? Every time I fly the laptop I have doesn’t work because airplanes only accept low voltage.

#

Looking to get something before I go on a 24 hour flight next week that will actually play a game or two to help kill time.

ancient flower
#

I'm guessing you'd be limited to an igpu

fluid cargo
warped yew
#

I don't fly often, but I'd imagine the power output on planes would be more for phones, right? Anything other than a MacBook would need at least 45W

green stream
#

planes usually either have 5v usb or international ac outlets. if your laptop uses a lot of power it might just be better to find a power bank that has high enough wattage and is under the plane limit?

#

but that type of use case is basically exactly what gaming handhelds like the steam deck or rog ally are made for.

fluid cargo
green stream
#

yeah there are power banks nowadays that can supply 100w+ ofc running at that much power won't last terribly long with the airline limit of around 99Wh

fluid cargo
#

Exactly, I was hoping there was like a low voltage charger or even a backup battery I could buy that would give me a good amount of time or could alternate between the two batteries or charge them each as I switched kind of thing

#

But I’m not familiar with any of that type of gear

ancient flower
ancient flower
green stream
#

yeah if it's really just for gaming and maybe some light web browsing that might be the play. they are more efficient, decently capable, small to carry

fluid cargo
#

Unfortunately the handhelds won’t work for the mmo I was trying to play that would make a good time kill.

#

On that note: anyone know of a good laptop battery back up of some kind I can buy that might give my laptop a second life after the main one dies? 😝

the first one is a very popular choice I know of. Personally I'm more a fan of the digital watches in the lower price range

night lotus

I like the third, but worried it’s bulky.

west fable
#

i love casios

#

very accurate as well

#

(mine is) +/- 15 seconds a month

#

the vintage one is +/- 30 seconds a month though

#

1st option and 3rd option should probably work with the most outfits, 2nd option has a bit more of a bold colour which may work with slightly fewer

#

in terms of longevity though, the casio digital watch is almost certainly going to outlast option 2 and 3

#

and is absolutely going to destroy the battery life of the electro mechanical watches

#

option 2/3 would probably have a mere like 2-3 year batt life

#

the digital is probably going to have 10 years

don't be fooled by the resin band
in the.... 40 or so years this watch has been around, the resin has proven to be reliable, and even protects the watch better

#

which is why the gshock line exists

#

if you work in trades and may bang your watch around, it's better to have resin
a gshock may even be better though may be out of your budget

#

yeah far higher price

night lotus
#

I wish Casio made the second one

#

With a stronger band

#

And slightly more durable

west fable
#

i'd say casio is better known for their digital watches than their analog

night lotus

green stream
#

most of the analog style watches I know of on lower end start between 50-100usd

night lotus
#

I want more of a metal or this type band

west fable
#

Honestly though, if you're not going for the casios, it probably would be about similar to get a similar watch on AliExpress, there are a few more other brands around

I'm not sure if that watch has a spring clip for the band to be easily replaced but most do

The Radium Girls were female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting radium dials – watch dials and hands with self-luminous paint. The brushes would lose shape after a few strokes, so the USRC supervisors encouraged their workers to point the brushes with their lips ("lip, dip, paint"), or use their tongues to keep them sharp.[9] Because the true nature of the radium had been kept from them, the Radium Girls also painted their nails, teeth, and faces for fun with the deadly paint produced at the factory.[10]

i'm pretty sure the pi you have in that kit is the pi3b, which might have enough?

you could also use it to run pihole for your own private dns adblocker

Anyone know the best option for a PS3 cooling fan that is quieter and more productive. I assume in the twenty years since I got it there has been some sort of improvements

west fable
#

It looks like it's a blower style fan specific to the ps3

#

So any innovations for fans does not really apply to the ps3

#

It looks like you may be able to make it quieter with a replacement fan with 19 blades, and also a repaste of the die

#

If you haven't repasted the PS3 yet, the repaste probably would make the ps3 alot quieter by itself at lower loads

jolly pier
#

I did that already and I ordered a nineteen blade. It looks like the fifteen has a issue with the edges allowing air to just bypass reducing the effectiveness. Idk that's what I read I was thinking about the printed cap that helps the processor stay in contact with the heat dissipation so it isn't relying entirely on the thermal paste. Supposed to be an alternative to the eraser hack.

Not sure where else to post this but here we go:

I recently got a 500mm Warbird from Volantexrc, and it came with a brushless motor and a 2S battery as compared to the 1S batteries of the 400mm warbirds I’m used to flying. On a whim, I swapped out the 2S battery that came with the plane for one of my 3S batteries meant for my Eflite UMX planes, I have never seen such a small plane reach easy 50 -55 mph in level flight before and I’m terrified to keep flying it like that.

I’m not concerned about the actual electronics issue regarding overheating as the absolute LEAFBLOWER that is the prop on 11.1v moves enough air through the inlets to easily cool the battery, motor, control board, and receiver. The problem is I’m not particularly sure that the poor brushless motor controller will survive such a load for long

#

And the servos seemed especially responsive under that load.

west fable
# slim juniper Not sure where else to post this but here we go: I recently got a 500mm Warbird...

You're overvolting the RC by like 30%
The specs on the store doesn't say what is the tolerance of voltages for the plane; just that it says to use 2s batteries

If you keep using it with 3s batteries, you might blow some board up from an overloaded resistor or something, but this depends on if they're using off the shelf parts or their own boards, as off the shelf parts may be designed to work with a larger voltage range than something custom
E.g. looking at the Matek F405 board, that supports 3s-6s (9v-30v)

Personally I would stick with using 2s unless you can disassemble the plane to take a look at all the boards to determine if it would be fine with that much more voltage

slim juniper
west fable
#

Probably wouldn't risk it then unless it's cheap enough to get another if it breaks

wraith steppe
#

What carrier/region?

sturdy jolt
#

Version currently. USA.

wraith steppe
#

The pixel 3a launched at a very attractive price

#

I'd say it depends on what upgrade / financing packages verison offers

#

I use a pixel 2 and 3, both on project fi, used to use a p1, and the p2 on verizon before that.

sturdy jolt
#

Well, I'll likely buy it without contracts n stuff, since I'm on a plan that I believe is flexible.

#

I outright bought this one, and plan on outright buying the next

#

So is it still a good deal for today? Or is there another better deal at the (I guess sub 500$) price range?

wraith steppe
#

I'd investigate your plan options first. I originally bought the pixel 3 for "$800" but that was free financing over 1 year with 0 apr, 400 back in credit , I'd look for similar deals

#

I'd actually recommend looking into buying used off swappa if you want an unlocked, no strings attached phone

#

pixel 2's, 3's are cheap now

#

If you get a pixel 2, just ensure to get the US/NA version, the CDMA version

sturdy jolt
#

Interesting, but if I wanted to get something new just in case, are there any other options? (Non-used hardware)

#

I've had issues in the past with used hardware overall, and rather not have to deal with any of that again if you're wondering.

wraith steppe
#

Something like a new pixel 3a off project fi using their financing deal, trade in credit, and referrall bonus.

sturdy jolt
#

Idrk too much about phone plans nd stuff, rn I have a version plan paid on a monthly basis

#

Can I just remove the sim card from this and put it in the new one without contacting Verizon?

wraith steppe
#

Assuming your current phone is using the physical sim for cell # on cdma, and also for LTE (it should) - you'd just have to ensure you buy a carrier unlocked new phone

sturdy jolt
#

Alright, is the amazon listing for 330$ a good one to pick up?

wraith steppe
#

Idk, depends on seller, but for an unlocked, 100% new pixel 3a, (around) $330 is market price, yes.

wraith steppe
#

Seems fine. Personally, I'd grab a like-new pixel 3 for $220 off swappa vs 330 for a new 3a without any incentives like financing/credit.
But it's a great phone for $330 anyway imo.

ive heard fnatic reacts are pretty good

#

but they are only $70 so if you are looking to spend more, you could probably find something better

ashen umbra
#

alright i'll check those out

#

it would probably be better to spend less money

#

I mean all i need is just an upgrade from these skullcandy hesh 2's i have

#

lmao

#

those reacts look pretty cool

amber fiber
#

ya the only thing is i dont think they have 7.1

ashen umbra
#

i see

#

do you have any experience with sennheiser or beyerdynamic by any chance?

#

i was looking at those beyerdynamic dt 990s

calm mural
#

both are pretty premium, my nod goes to beyerdynamic though

#

i have the mmx300s which are wonderful

#

but if you have a standalone mic it would make more sense to get nice cans without a mic

#

but those are definitely not in your price range, i didn't see you were looking at $120

ashen umbra
#

i see, thank you

#

i do have a stand-alone mic

#

and i wasn’t really looking for a gaming headset-more like a professional looking pair of headphones that i can listen to music comfortably

#

i also wear glasses, so it complicates the process

calm mural
#

yeah, any of the studio sennheisers or studio BD cans will do you well then

#

i can't attest to glasses fitment though

#

the mmx300s are a pair of their studio headphones with a mic on it more or less

ashen umbra
#

now i just have to find a way to convince my father to allow me to purchase them

#

i'm sure he'll be fine if i mention that they are a german company lmao

calm mural
#

audio technica makes some nice, affordable stuff too

ashen umbra
#

yeah

calm mural
#

i can't say enough nice things about my BD headset

ashen umbra
#

hahaha

calm mural
#

imo light years beyond my sennheiser set from a couple years ago

ashen umbra
#

sound good

#

sounds

#

from your experience, how is the comfort overall

calm mural
#

i have a gigantic head and these are, without comparison, the most comfortable pair i've ever owned

#

now that's highly subjective and ymmv

ashen umbra
#

hahah

#

my head is average sized i'd say

#

how about the tension?

calm mural
#

i often wear it for 8-10 hours at a time and what tension?

#

it's very secured but i never feel a pinch or pressure

ashen umbra
#

yeah i was looking for that model actually

#

just waiting for it get cheaper

calm mural
#

yeah that is a nice set of cans

ashen umbra
#

so they offer an 80 or 250ohm

#

i don't have an amp

#

so should i get 80

calm mural
#

some motherboards will have a soundcard that can adjust its impedance

#

so it depends on what motherboard you have

calm mural
#

yeah but you'll definitely need an amp for that

ashen umbra
#

i can always get one

#

what would happen if i didn't get one though

calm mural
#

if you're fine getting an amp then those will be fine

#

probably wouldn't work

ashen umbra
#

meaning no sound

#

or low quality

#

?

calm mural
#

no sound

#

too high of an electrical resistance for the power to go through more or less

ashen umbra
#

oh i see

calm mural
#

you can get decent amps for like $50

ashen umbra
#

i'm currently using a gaming laptop

#

but i don't know if they can run 250ohm with the onboard sound

calm mural
#

i'd be astonished

ashen umbra
#

is there a way to check

calm mural
#

check the manual to see the range of impedances it can power

#

but it probably has a range from like 4ohms-60ohms

calm mural
#

the manual of your laptop that is

mellow glen
#

@ashen umbra I was looking to get headphones and had to decide whether to get the 250ohm and an amp or spend more for the 80ohm or even the 32ohm and save the money from the amp

#

What's your total budget for headphones+amp?

ashen umbra
#

i dunno

#

probably around 140 max including amp

#

potentially up to 160

mellow glen
#

I ended up getting the Philips Fidelio X2HR which is supposedly very similar to the DT 990 and has an impedance of around 32Ohms

#

They cost $115 and can be run on any device

ashen umbra
#

oh i see

mellow glen
#

But then I ended up getting a Dragonfly Red amp from a friend for just $60

ashen umbra
#

can you link it?

#

the headphones

mellow glen
#

Let me find them, there are several versions

#

@ashen umbra It's this one

#

It costs $145 for some reason now

#

But there's also a cheaper version that doesn't have removable earpads

#

If you wait I suppose you should be able to find them cheaper

#

I got them for $115

pine carbon
#

dem some expensive headphones

strange perch
#

@ashen umbra visit a music gear shop, try on different headphones. What someone else might prefer/think sounds good, could easily sound horrible to you

topaz adder
#

grand cypress
#

#

Will I swap the slots their in

topaz adder
#

#

I helped a guy once with corsair ram, same issue kind of, and him changing the slots worked perfectly.

grand cypress
#

I swapped them and I will update when I'm at the desktop

#

That's a problem my pc is turning on and off now

#

Obv it stopped when I say that

topaz adder
#

yeah give it a sec.

grand cypress

Nope didn't work I'm on the desktop and it's not detecting my ram still

#

And now I can only use 8gb of ram

#

It's the black and white bios I have before it was the black and red

#

Should I flash back and how do I do it

mellow glen
#

Hi

#

I'm looking to buy a laptop but need help choosing one

#

So, my budget is max $1,500 but preferably closer to $1,000

#

I'd prefer 15" but 13" is fine

#

I'll be using it for basic stuff most of the time since I have a PC which I use for intensive tasks, but I would like a GPU if possible to be able to do 3D modeling and play games when not at home
