is there an open source nvidia control panel alternative? It keeps resetting my monitor settings and it's driving me crazy

#

I usually run all my monitors at 75Hz, but nvidia keeps resetting it seemingly at random. I just go back to the control panel and it's reset.

#

Sometimes my custom resolutions are disabled, and I have to click Customize and tick them again so they show up.

#

This has persisted through DDU, Windows reinstalls, motherboard, CPU, RAM, and GPU upgrades.

tired orchid
#

No, there isn't.

#

You're just gonna have to suffer.

#

And probably stop using custom resolutions

paper cedar
#

How do I get to the bios from here

strong surge
#

You waited too long lol

vestal ibex
#

Reboot and mash delete until the screen changes

paper cedar
#

Bet

#

Thanks

#

I got a windows iso on a usb and reset but it still ain’t going

strong surge
#

Need to use the Media Creation Tool to make the USB bootable

#

Just putting an ISO on it won't do anything

paper cedar
#

So I need the exe

strong surge
#

You need to download the Media Creation Tool and then run it to let it make the bootable USB

#

It takes a while to do it

paper cedar
#

I got a chromebook so how would I do that

#

Can’t open executables

strong surge
#

Interesting

last gorge
#

install linux on chromebook, use app to create bootable ¯_(ツ)_/¯

strong surge
last gorge
#

oh wow xD

strong surge
#

Chromebook Recovery Utility and the Windows ISO looks like

#

Not sure if that is UEFI compatible or not but I guess we find out

paper cedar
#

Can vms access flash drives?

#

If so then that would be easier

last gorge
#

some VMs can, depends on software i suppose

paper cedar
#

Hm

#

How about if someone did the media creation for me and sent me the file

#

Chromebook is from school so I have little control

strong surge
#

That's not how it works lol

#

Can't send the bootable USB drive via software. It needs to be created from the tool or the ISO

paper cedar
#

So like you can’t zip it and send it ? I thought it was just like any other file

strong surge
#

No, it's not

#

Has to be formatted a certain way, etc

#

SO it's bootable

last gorge
#

vintage trying to say its not something as simple as a file, the tool is required to format and setup needed files

#

there are usbs sold already set but they come at a price

strong surge
#

Right, it's not just a set of files you pop on a drive and boot from

#

:/

paper cedar
#

Would Linux be the same

tired orchid
#

Yes.

paper cedar
#

If I have an existing bootable drive, is it just a matter of copy and pasting the files?

#

To turn an empty usb to a windows bootable

dense mirage
#

No, you need to use an imaging tool like Rufus or balena etcher

#

You could probably also manually dd a bootable image onto the drive, but I'm not sure if Chromebooks allow you to do that

strong surge
#

They do with Chrome Recovery Utility

#

I posted a guide for it

dense mirage
#

Nice

paper cedar
#

Can’t use that

#

It’s blocked on my Chromebook

peak notch
#

bruh you using a school chromebook or smthn?

#

broke ass smh

dense mirage
#

That complicates matters. Depending on the competency of the IT staff at your school it could be pretty tightly locked down

does anyone know of a way to diagnose and fix my issue?

cinder mauve
#

ew windows

better

paper cedar
#

Windows is more user friendly imo

cinder mauve
#

no

#

try Pop!_OS

#

Pop!_OS is easy to use.

paper cedar
#

That’s a lot of effort

cinder mauve
#

no?

#

It's easy

#

Try Ubuntu or Pop!_OS

#

I think Pop!_OS is better for noobs

#

There is also the Pop!_Shop

paper cedar
#

I’ll install it alongside windows and see how it goes

crisp spire
#

Linux mint>>>>pop os

cinder mauve
#

Pop!_OS is better

#

then mint

crisp spire
#

but yeah if ur used to windows, linux can be a little bit of a learning curve

cinder mauve
#

true

crisp spire
#

If you dont have a compelling reason to switch, dont

cinder mauve
#

I like gnome the most

crisp spire
#

pop os is garbage as a 1st os after windows tbh

cinder mauve
#

Manjaro is garbage

crisp spire
#

Now when making the jump from windows to linux

cinder mauve
#

and pamac is garbage

crisp spire
#

mint is more simple to get since ui elements are windows 7 like

cinder mauve
#

Arch Linux is good

#

not easy to install

#

but the aur is nice

grand bramble
#

can somebody help me? My pc is stuck on the asus screen and I can't boot into BIOS but I don't have an OS

cinder mauve
#

What do you think about Pop!_OS

cinder mauve
#

did it show your specs

#

when you boot?

#

try F11 or ESC or F12

#

idk

grand bramble
#

naw its showing me this:

cinder mauve

do you have a gpu

grand bramble

it now says the uefi is corrupted lol

yes

cinder mauve

I dont see it there

#

How did you get a GPU?

I have a rtx 2060KO

crisp spire
#

Nah

cinder mauve
#

I can't find any GPU's.

crisp spire
#

its saying the gpt partition is corrupted

#

just hit F1

cinder mauve
grand bramble
#

but what does the gpt partition corruption mean? I keep rebooting and my pc keeps taking AGES to go into the uefi or give me a error screen

crisp spire
#

a hard disk or ssd format will solve your problem

crisp spire
#

its not major at all

cinder mauve
#

thats all

#

for now

grand bramble
#

ah, how would I go about doing that?

#

I don't have an os yet

crisp spire
#

Hit F1

grand bramble
#

ok I hit f1

#

i'm in the bios

#

uefi whatever

#

Isp?

#

Null?

#

@crisp spire ?

crisp spire
#

Ok so now you can get into the bios for sure

now wait till ur readyto install the OS

we can format the disk using that installer yeah?

#

i had the same bsod while playing dying light, GTA5, and rocket league

grand bramble
#

@crisp spire I tried to install windows but now it just blue-screens and fails to install, while taking like 10 minutes to give me access to the bios, this is with a new installation media

sly heath
#

Anyone here good with DNS settings?

crisp spire
grand bramble
#

how I do dat from the bios?

crisp spire
#

From the install media

#

Not bios

grand bramble
#

but the install media doesn't work either lol

#

I am waiting on my friend to bring me a new usb to install the windows installer and try that

#

cause those are 2 seperate issues

#

the BIOS thing and the install media thing

sly heath
#

I downloaded DNS Benchmark earlier, because I'm trying to figure out what the best server is for me. I get frequent lag spikes on Xbox, so I'm attempting to manually edit the DNS. I went through the process of benchmarking, and found the domain which the software claims is the best. I just want to make sure the domain is safe before I switch everything over to it

crisp spire
#

Where do u live?

sly heath
#

Long Island, NY

crisp spire
#

So yeah primary- 1.1.1.1
secondary- 1.0.0.1

#

Thats the cloudfare dns

#

Should be the best one for you

crisp spire

The bios is telling you the disk is corrupt

The windows install media isnt installing because the disk is corrupt

No but I was talking about the slow bios boot, that was happening even before I inserted the media

#

What i mean that with my install of windows I could get better support for my pc then

crisp spire

It’s probably just error checking the hard drive

Do I only need to change the preferred DNS servers in the Network Connections settings on my PC and the Network Settings on the Xbox? Or is there another location I need to switch?

grand bramble

windows preinstallation enviornment

that's what the windows installer runs on

That applies it everywhere

Not sure how to switch the DNS settings for the router. When I type the Gateway number into my browser, it brings me to a page from my ISP, where I can see the SSID, password, and security type. Doesn't allow me to change anything there, at least as far as I can tell

and I had the latest bios on my old mobo and still had the same problem

kk

#

For the motherboard rma they said some skews were broken

grand bramble
#

some cpu socket

#

pinhead skews they said idk what that is

sly heath
#

Went back to the main dashboard and found the DNS settings for the router. These numbers are nowhere close to the ones on the Xbox lol

#

Should I try typing these in prior to the 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1?

crisp spire
sly heath

Done. I'd be ecstatic if the lag subsides

The "native" refresh rate is 60Hz. The box said 75Hz.

tired orchid

Clearly the box lied

warm osprey

so do I sue acer or..?

tired orchid

No? You'd spend more money than you'd get back from the suit

warm osprey

Also I'd have to sue ASUS because my other 75Hz monitor does this too

#

I'm joking obvs

tired orchid
#

75hz vs 60hz is also so minor I don't think most humans could tell the difference.

Now, 60hz vs 144hz on the other hand.

That would be a big enough discrepancy that I'd she.

Stop using chrome, it eats ram for breakfast

#

Best browser firefox or duckduckgo

Because google is using your ram to send them your data

By going into properties I believe

Which is rare for me

crisp spire

brave and chrome are built off off chromium

winged dagger

I think you can press shift + esc on edge to see whats taking up memory

#

Yeah

cinder mauve
winged dagger
#

You can even end the processes

crisp spire
#

only thing is brave has 💩 hardware acceleration

cinder mauve
#

im probably gonna just stick with chrome

#

bc

extentions

#

ill just reinstall chrome

winged dagger
#

Dont all browsers have hardware accel?

cinder mauve
#

so no more grey screen

winged dagger
#

I know chrome does

crisp spire
#

chrome with adguard adblocker slaps brave

crisp spire
winged dagger
#

Yeah edge also has hardware accel

#

Oo just found out you can set tabs to sleep earlier

cinder mauve
#

does hardware acceleration work

#

i found how to turn it on/off in chrome

winged dagger
#

All I know is that it sometimes interferes with screensharing on discord when its off I believe

cinder mauve
#

oh it does defo

winged dagger
#

Edge has a cool feature that I use on my school laptop that csn let you set a tab to open as soon as you start the browser

#

I use it to open my To Do list on google classroom

winged dagger
#

Guess ive only seen it on edge since its the one I use the most

I have Chrome set to auto open all the tabs I had open when I closed it. Super useful. Home page is programmed to my email.

The majority of problems with Vista were actually third party drivers

#

Not saying it was good but the problems mostly weren't MS's fault

vestal ibex

Fair enough but that meant that you essentially NEEDED to have a device that was designed to run Vista. If you tried to upgrade your XP system it was almost guaranteed to be problematic.

#

Hey I'm unsure if this is the right place to ask but anyways, I was out of town over the weekend and while I was gone had my pc mining using nicehash, I noticed yesterday it listed as offline but just figured maybe my apartment lost power or something and my pc shutdown. anyways I come back today and it just is open on the bios, and whenever I hit exit on the bios the pc just rebooted to the bios and not windows. After completely shutting down the computer and turning it back on it booted right to windows. Could that have been a botched auto update or something? I'm really confused at what happened

#

Looking at event manager I can't find any info on why it shutdown only events referring to an unexpected shutdown on 5/28

dense mirage
#

Still could quite possibly have been a brief power failure. If it was unexpected, I'd say it almost definitely wasn't an update

proper burrow
#

Alright, yea the logs continue normal and then all of a sudden just stop on 5/28 and then I have logs dated from when I was trying to reboot it today mentioning an unexpected shutdown

dense mirage
#

I'd say that some sort of power issue is probably the most likely issue

proper burrow
#

Alright, thanks I just want to make sure there isn't something else wrong I need to address or look for

dense mirage
#

If you continue to run the rig for long periods of time, almost every modern BIOS has a setting where you can have it automatically reboot after power failure. If you then have nicehash set to auto start on launch, it should bring everything back up for you

proper burrow
#

Alright, Ideally I won't be out of town again for several days on end but thank you!

vestal ibex

Getting your own modem ensures you can take advantage of the over-provisioning by 20% that Comcast does. (If you have a 100mb plan they allocate 120mb to account for their modems being garbage)

hoary nacelle

that is good to know

That only means 8 channels available on the modem end of things, doesn't mean you'll actually get that many

#

tbh there's no real reason for cable modems to have slow upload to begin with, even 5 channels should carry 100mb no problem

In every single RGB software that's available as well as things like OpenRGB, the software only detects 2 of the 4 sticks of RAM that I have. That being said, in terms of storage recognition, my PC recognized there are 64GB of available so that's not a concern. I am considering getting a new kit of RAM, thinking maybe that's the issue but honestly im not even sure anymore so any and all suggestions would be appreciated. You've probably already checked your boot order settings, but also try toggling legacy boot mode on and see if the Windows bootloader comes up.

Were you able to boot to the recovery menu tools on the flash drive? If so you can always nuke your boot partition and rebuild it. It's obviously a drastic step but I've had to before.

How much do I gain from disabling indexing on Windows really? Thinking if it was even worth it. Also O&O Shutup10 I disabled telemetry, automatic updates, updates in general excluding drivers, and turned off Windows Defender. It regularly fails to suppress windows from attempting automatic updates and telemetry. I've done registry edits, services edits, and the other one I can't recall atm. Only successfully suppressed Windows Defender from running. The rest Windows keeps fighting with me on it and it's annoying. Still have no idea how I deleted Windows Defender off of my laptop. I would recommend not learning them by trying to minimize your computer

You're playing with fire that you don't understand

cinder mauve

I understand the common sense risks of lowering walls. Not firewalls, but you know what I mean. I'm not invulnerable.

crisp spire

I remember the last time I stripped windows down to the bare essentials

dense mirage
#

Firewalls aren't really that much protection from most attacks

crisp spire
#

There were like 5 things in the menu that comes up when you press the windows key

#

and half the OS was stripped out

#

including explorer

dense mirage
#

Firewalls are common place enough that most attacks will either go around them or penetrate right through them

cinder mauve

Wouldn't Linux be worse security wise in comparison. Or does the kernel make a big difference?

crisp spire

dense mirage
cinder mauve
#

Non Microsoft I'm saying

#

Constantly as in how often?

dense mirage
#

Additional. most attacks out there are targeted at windows user

#

Constantly as in hundreds or thousands of work hours every day

#

Maybe more

#

Linux is what keeps the world running

#

It needs to be hardened

#

Combined with the better security work to start with, an actual robust firewall available, and most attacks ignoring Linux anyway, it's much more secure

#

And most of the attacks that are targeted at linux will be targeting servers and data centers, not common users

cinder mauve
#

Doesn't sound invulnerable if it's something as simple being scanned from time to time. What I'm getting at is security because like Mac OS, most things aren't programmed for it? Am I getting this right?
