now it's doing this which is pecking great https://your-face.is-ne.at/ujYRGZ.gif
I usually run all my monitors at 75Hz, but nvidia keeps resetting it seemingly at random. I just go back to the control panel and it's reset.
Sometimes my custom resolutions are disabled, and I have to click Customize and tick them again so they show up.
This has persisted through DDU, Windows reinstalls, motherboard, CPU, RAM, and GPU upgrades.
No, there isn't.
You're just gonna have to suffer.
And probably stop using custom resolutions
How do I get to the bios from here
You waited too long lol
Reboot and mash delete until the screen changes
Need to use the Media Creation Tool to make the USB bootable
Just putting an ISO on it won't do anything
So I need the exe
You need to download the Media Creation Tool and then run it to let it make the bootable USB
It takes a while to do it
Interesting
install linux on chromebook, use app to create bootable ¯_(ツ)_/¯
oh wow xD
Chromebook Recovery Utility and the Windows ISO looks like
Not sure if that is UEFI compatible or not but I guess we find out
some VMs can, depends on software i suppose
Hm
How about if someone did the media creation for me and sent me the file
Chromebook is from school so I have little control
That's not how it works lol
Can't send the bootable USB drive via software. It needs to be created from the tool or the ISO
So like you can’t zip it and send it ? I thought it was just like any other file
vintage trying to say its not something as simple as a file, the tool is required to format and setup needed files
there are usbs sold already set but they come at a price
Would Linux be the same
Yes.
If I have an existing bootable drive, is it just a matter of copy and pasting the files?
To turn an empty usb to a windows bootable
No, you need to use an imaging tool like Rufus or balena etcher
You could probably also manually dd a bootable image onto the drive, but I'm not sure if Chromebooks allow you to do that
They do with Chrome Recovery Utility
I posted a guide for it
Kind of a wonky workaround but it works https://superuser.com/questions/1612877/create-bootable-windows-10-usb-from-chrome-os
Nice
That complicates matters. Depending on the competency of the IT staff at your school it could be pretty tightly locked down
My laptop broke so I have limited options
unfortunate
i keep getting the "dcp watchdog violation" bsod
does anyone know of a way to diagnose and fix my issue?
Windows is more user friendly imo
That’s a lot of effort
no?
It's easy
Try Ubuntu or Pop!_OS
I think Pop!_OS is better for noobs
There is also the Pop!_Shop
I’ll install it alongside windows and see how it goes
Linux mint>>>>pop os
but yeah if ur used to windows, linux can be a little bit of a learning curve
true
If you dont have a compelling reason to switch, dont
I like gnome the most
pop os is garbage as a 1st os after windows tbh
pop os is good?
Manjaro is garbage
Now when making the jump from windows to linux
and pamac is garbage
mint is more simple to get since ui elements are windows 7 like
can somebody help me? My pc is stuck on the asus screen and I can't boot into BIOS but I don't have an OS
What do you think about Pop!_OS
uefi
uh
did it show your specs
when you boot?
try F11 or ESC or F12
idk
do you have a gpu
Nah
I can't find any GPU's.
Here are the parts I got. www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B078LWV8PZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
but what does the gpt partition corruption mean? I keep rebooting and my pc keeps taking AGES to go into the uefi or give me a error screen
a hard disk or ssd format will solve your problem
its not major at all
Hit F1
but what does that mean?
ok I hit f1
i'm in the bios
uefi whatever
Isp?
Null?
@crisp spire ?
Ok so now you can get into the bios for sure
now wait till ur readyto install the OS
we can format the disk using that installer yeah?
ye
i keep getting the "dcp watchdog violation" bsod. Does anyone know of a way to diagnose and fix my issue?
can anyone offer actual advice?
it just happened again and i reviewed event viewer and there's no related events'
i also updated some drivers but it keeps happening especially during gaming
i had the same bsod while playing dying light, GTA5, and rocket league
@crisp spire I tried to install windows but now it just blue-screens and fails to install, while taking like 10 minutes to give me access to the bios, this is with a new installation media
Anyone here good with DNS settings?
Format the drive
Yep what you need
how I do dat from the bios?
but the install media doesn't work either lol
I am waiting on my friend to bring me a new usb to install the windows installer and try that
cause those are 2 seperate issues
the BIOS thing and the install media thing
I downloaded DNS Benchmark earlier, because I'm trying to figure out what the best server is for me. I get frequent lag spikes on Xbox, so I'm attempting to manually edit the DNS. I went through the process of benchmarking, and found the domain which the software claims is the best. I just want to make sure the domain is safe before I switch everything over to it
Dns benchmark is garbage tbh
Where do u live?
Long Island, NY
So yeah primary- 1.1.1.1
secondary- 1.0.0.1
Thats the cloudfare dns
Should be the best one for you
Nope
The bios is telling you the disk is corrupt
The windows install media isnt installing because the disk is corrupt
Same issue
Reason: Duplicated text
OOOOOOH
No but I was talking about the slow bios boot, that was happening even before I inserted the media
What i mean that with my install of windows I could get better support for my pc then
It’s probably just error checking the hard drive
may b
Remove the hard disk from ur pc and try
Its an ssd that has nothing on it, its not even formatted yet because I haven't been able to get into windows PE
A windows install will do nothing to get you support for a hardware problem
PE?
Do I only need to change the preferred DNS servers in the Network Connections settings on my PC and the Network Settings on the Xbox? Or is there another location I need to switch?
You can just do it in router
That applies it everywhere
I mean that I can get supportassist or some remote assistance so they can troubleshoot anything they can idk
Are you choosing to boot off the installer @grand bramble
yep
boot priority set to the flash drive
So u want a software to fix a hardware issue
Honestly rma the ssd
If its brand new
I just mean that since this is a new motherboard AND SSD that came back from an rma TODAY, it has to be a software or firmware issue
I just rma'd them
Does ur mobo have bios flashback?
Not sure how to switch the DNS settings for the router. When I type the Gateway number into my browser, it brings me to a page from my ISP, where I can see the SSID, password, and security type. Doesn't allow me to change anything there, at least as far as I can tell
dunno, probably but dunno how to use it
and I had the latest bios on my old mobo and still had the same problem
So ill help you in a few hours because i gtg rn
Any other tabs?
Went back to the main dashboard and found the DNS settings for the router. These numbers are nowhere close to the ones on the Xbox lol
Should I try typing these in prior to the 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1?
We can check when i get back
No problem glad I could!
How do I run my monitors at their advertised framerates, then?
The "native" refresh rate is 60Hz. The box said 75Hz.
Clearly the box lied
so do I sue acer or..?
No? You'd spend more money than you'd get back from the suit
Also I'd have to sue ASUS because my other 75Hz monitor does this too
I'm joking obvs
75hz vs 60hz is also so minor I don't think most humans could tell the difference.
Now, 60hz vs 144hz on the other hand.
That would be a big enough discrepancy that I'd she.
*sue
I can tell immediately when I get back to my PC if it decided to reset all my settings.
It is very noticeable to me.
It doesn't seem like a huge amount but 75hz is 25% more than 60hz
See if you can do in the windows settings and not Nvidia control panel
now NVIDIA has the Hz reset again 🤔
However the refresh rate option does not even go to 60Hz
oo I was able to change it here tho
let's hope this sticks. Thanks for the help!
Np
what is going on? every so often, google chrome will just crash my computer. clicking on a yt video, switching tabs, it will jsut glitch and give me a grey screen, and the only way to fix it to force turn off my laptop from the power button and turn it back on
Stop using chrome, it eats ram for breakfast
Best browser firefox or duckduckgo
Because google is using your ram to send them your data
Eh
I did a tab by tab comparison with Chrome and FF once
The difference was negligible
Love using Ublock Origin
I have found AdGuard to be better than Ublock. Couple snuck through Ublock, none sneak through AdGuard
(they do have an actual browser lol)
I set up the filters per a guide someone posted here, mebbe it wasn't the right one
Ublock let through a couple of FB ads
Hmm aight
In the sidebar
Also I get the radio ad for DDG’s browser every morning I drive to work
i know but i just like chrome better than out of all of them. its sleeker, runs great and is ez to use
i used to use firefox but switched to chrome
that
vs that
chrome looks way better
the 1 thing i like abt chrome better is that the websites under the search bar are just pinned websties, on chrome its recently visited
but i think im gonna switch back to firefox
only thing
is a lot of extensions i use on chrome
arent on firefox
like preMiD
whats chromium
not at all
They really fixed stuff recently
I can have over 200 tabs playing youtube to start running out of ram
Chromium is the basis for chrome
It's kinda like pure android with no skin
I would never anyway lemme go check out my edge rewards from browsing
what grey screen
scroll ip
how do u get rewards from browsing if ur not using egde
edge
I see no grey screen
this
notice how its called EDGE rewards?
yea..?
uninstall chrome and install again
It has edge in the name lmao
i use edge
ur a psychopath
Thank you I know
Edge is decent nowadays
I mean its there
its come a LONG way from ie days
Id say Opera is better but im too lazy to install it
im gonna be called weird for this but
i also like browsers depending on the logo Lol
because some browser logos
make my taskbar
look like crap
yep
And I think there are artists out there that make the logos but themed differentlt
So just take one of those images and slap it on
neither
Opera bad when it comes to security
lotta leaks
Yeah true
slow
Edge is cool but it uses a lot of ram sometimes
all browsers
no its faster than chrome from my knowledge
slower
brave and chrome are built off off chromium
yea thts what i want
You can even end the processes
only thing is brave has 💩 hardware acceleration
im probably gonna just stick with chrome
bc
extentions
ill just reinstall chrome
Dont all browsers have hardware accel?
so no more grey screen
I know chrome does
chrome with adguard adblocker slaps brave
Implementation differs
Yeah edge also has hardware accel
Oo just found out you can set tabs to sleep earlier
All I know is that it sometimes interferes with screensharing on discord when its off I believe
oh it does defo
Edge has a cool feature that I use on my school laptop that csn let you set a tab to open as soon as you start the browser
I use it to open my To Do list on google classroom
almost all browsers have that
Guess ive only seen it on edge since its the one I use the most
I have Chrome set to auto open all the tabs I had open when I closed it. Super useful. Home page is programmed to my email.
Edge has been based on chrome for at least 6 months or so
Nah brave is faster it has auto adblocker cookie blocker etc so loads sites faster
Yeah this works or cntrl shift t does the same in most browsers
Bad hardware acceleration puts it behind chrome with adguard
ive got a laptop with windows 8, and my mom doesnt want to buy a new laptop and its much better then her current machine. Is it worth updating it to windows 10? and if so, do i update it or do i have to pull it off of my pc to a flash drive, if thats possible
or is updating to windows 10 still crappy
Windows 10 is soooóo much better windows 10 was never crappy especially compared to 8
It's quite easy, you should be able to use windows media creation tool
Just back up any important info
ty. no important info on it, deleted most files bc i didnbt think i could do it anyways
resetting it wasnt working
so i got windows 10, but it didnt delete my stuff
disc auto opened
as well as some other stuff
ima have to delete the stuff manually arent i
If you look at the pattern of major Windows releases, Windows alternates between good and bad. 95, good. NT, cringe. 98/SE good (my favorite tbh). 2000, garbage. XP, so good it's still used. Vista... we all know about Vista. 7, epic. 8 was ambitious and fell way short. Now we have 10.
The majority of problems with Vista were actually third party drivers
Not saying it was good but the problems mostly weren't MS's fault
Fair enough but that meant that you essentially NEEDED to have a device that was designed to run Vista. If you tried to upgrade your XP system it was almost guaranteed to be problematic.
Yeah I mean I'm not old enough to remember before vista but Windows 10 has always been pretty good imo
No more Windows 8/8.1 mess
Agree
98 SE was always my favorite. I could never get that OS to crash except on purpose.
But I'm not gonna still use windows 7 cuz yano security support and stuff lol
That hot garbage was absolutely foul LOL
Yeah I'm pretending that it was rolled into 2000 and moving on
Don't forget N editions too
I understand it can be useful for school etc
But windows 10 s is being shipped on budget laptops now which is such a scam imo because it's like 100$ to unluck the ability to install not ms store apps
Switching from Windows 10S is free https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/switching-out-of-s-mode-in-windows-10-4f56d9be-99ec-6983-119f-031bfb28a307
Switch out of S mode to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.
You have to do an "upgrade" though, meaning you need to either buy an upgrade key for the version you're moving to or you need to have a valid retail key.
Nope, I've done this on multiple Windows 10S laptops. You all ready have a valid key. It's one way though, can't revert.
Mb they fixed it before you had to pay like 100$
Why is it a fix when ms still says it's free?
Because you used to have to pay 100$ to get Windows 10 home
Huh, Windows 10 S is home. Why would you want pro for home use?
I have a 3600x and a VERY nice RX 570
I'm on pro too for VM purposes
I'm on Pro because I got Windows 7 Pro for being a Beta Tester and Windows 10 was a free upgrade so........ I don't even use VM's XD
No it's not, windows 10 s only lets you download from the Microsoft store
I'm on windows 10 pro because i got it for free through work 😎
Seems a lot peeps have it for reasons like that XD
Yeah, I only have 15 years in IT. I don't know what I'm talking about. 10S was MS way of creating a Chromebook. I give up.
My Computer Boots from ESXI 7 anyway I can update my BIOS
any idea please
My computer is Tower Dell
Hey
I have x570 gaming x mobo
Im stuck in bios and when i click on save a and exit then turn me back to bios
The problem solved
hello every time i start me pc there windows showing getting reading dont turn of
off
y this every time showing should be only when update right?
If it doesn't stop and you have to turn it off and on again, reinstall windows imo
Alright, ive been recently experiencing this weird thing going on with my pc, so I could just randomly be doing anything and my pc will just shut off and turn back on again, kind of like a restart, but it happens out of nowhere, out of the blue. It just happened to be like 3 times in 10 minutes and im starting to get a little skeptical, anyone have any suggestions on why this is happening?
cause im kinda desperate for answers.
Alright, looking at the little LEDs on my motherboard a second before it turns off it flashes red, then white, then green. Turns back on and the cycle repeats
Are you running any overclocks
only on my ram, for xmp, also i managed to fix it with some help from some friends, all i needed was a bios update apparently
Nvm
Just turned off ani was typing my second sentence
Somethings still wrobg
Wrong*
On my phone now
if your still available, you have any suggestions
Can you open event viewer and see what's there
Alright its open
alright, ive had it on for roughly around 7 minutes now
Open it full screen
Open critical
Okay download whocrashed
Ye
Hit analyze
Can you scroll down?
ehh try hit the link at the bottom
i already did my bios just now, ill get the rest of my drivers downloaded
So I dunno how many people will be happy with this...but the latest Windows Update FINALLY FIXED the HDR Washout with Snipping Tool! Finally! Sorry but I'm excited because the pain to copy and paste and crop screenshot images....
You know about windows+shift+s?
I mean now it's fixed. snip and sketch is the replacement of snipping tool..(old win7 for me) but it hated HDR. Looks like that's no longer the case. Only took like what, 5+ years to fix?
sudo apt install flameshot
apk add flameshot
doas apk add flameshot
that's alpine
You forgot root privileges. Permission denied
meh im part of the wheel group
And?
and i rock like that
Permission still denied
boo. edit the sudoers file
You think I have sudo?
dunno, what does id say
should be able to su if alpine
could install sudo if you wanted too. Tho i work with containers so rarely need too for what I want them to do
more than one way to 2+2
Yup, and I already have one way. I don't need two
So I picked the lighter weight and arguably more secure way to do it
heavily depends on the flavor too. default rhel/centos/fedora :/
You can change that
Bob how many oses do you have on your pc?
This is my laptop
PC is win10 and debian, laptop is alpine
Side note, getting this on alpine was a bit of a pain
absolutely. not for job stuff 😦
How does that make any sense with regards to the question?
haha I just saw that! My bad!
I think that was meant as a reply to my post
yes it was. went to click you and it scrolled up! That's funny
Nothing saying you can't change it if you're the sysadmin
which is also true. I'm fine with sudo, rarely use it for my setup
anyway..thought i'd share the snip and sketch hdr fix. linux tangent aside 😉
help! i wanna reset my computer but it says this. I have 2 usb thumbdrives with 64 gb if needed
im currently trying to download the windows creation software or whatever its called, its creating windows rn
ok so the install media worke dbut
new proble,
how the heck do i navigate this screen? i literally cant navigate it because theres no mous no buttons to work it with
i cant move the mouse
like it wont work at all
use your arrow keys
when i use my arrow keys it only navigates the selected box
and i can’t switch boxes or anything
@neat heart
sending a video now
i hit spacebar and it worked/ LOL
UGHH
i don’t want to upgrade it either
i just want a factory reset
i have the usb thumb drive with the windows media on it
Tab to select things, enter to confirm it. You'll see a rectangle around selected items. It's perfectly fine navigating without a mouse in the installer.
If you're in a text field you'll see the blinking cursor.
Hey I'm unsure if this is the right place to ask but anyways, I was out of town over the weekend and while I was gone had my pc mining using nicehash, I noticed yesterday it listed as offline but just figured maybe my apartment lost power or something and my pc shutdown. anyways I come back today and it just is open on the bios, and whenever I hit exit on the bios the pc just rebooted to the bios and not windows. After completely shutting down the computer and turning it back on it booted right to windows. Could that have been a botched auto update or something? I'm really confused at what happened
Looking at event manager I can't find any info on why it shutdown only events referring to an unexpected shutdown on 5/28
Still could quite possibly have been a brief power failure. If it was unexpected, I'd say it almost definitely wasn't an update
Alright, yea the logs continue normal and then all of a sudden just stop on 5/28 and then I have logs dated from when I was trying to reboot it today mentioning an unexpected shutdown
I'd say that some sort of power issue is probably the most likely issue
Alright, thanks I just want to make sure there isn't something else wrong I need to address or look for
If you continue to run the rig for long periods of time, almost every modern BIOS has a setting where you can have it automatically reboot after power failure. If you then have nicehash set to auto start on launch, it should bring everything back up for you
Alright, Ideally I won't be out of town again for several days on end but thank you!
Only gotcha there is that windows isn't designed to be kept running for long periods of time, so you might start running into some performance issues after a day or two
should i get some help for my pc
bc when i try to update it it fails every time?
Open an admin command prompt and enter these commands:
sfc /scannow dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Then reboot and try the update again
A special Windows event is coming June 24th. Microsoft is poised to reveal the "next-generation" of its operating system. https://t.co/GA5fAlKEZM
windows 11?
idk
MS already said years ago they're not doing anything past 10, just updating the core and interface of 10
It's hard to speculate, maybe we'll get leaks as the date approaches
What about NO OS AT ALL, we just directly run the software we want to use
yes
Tell your bios to boot straight to CoD or something lol
is that possible
I mean, theoretically sure but it would take a complete rewrite of literally everything

i want a new look to windows tbh
Yep windows mimicking intel 14nm... very soon we gonna get windows 10++++++++++
or maybe this announcement will just be a windows 10 arm
which i know already exists but its not very good lol
compared to what apple is doing with m1 and rosetta...
Yeh probably just a new line of Microsoft branded notebooks running arm or something
You mean kinda like dos?
In the absolute minimum sense of the word. I think grub is probably more fully featured at this point
Yeah I could see using a bootloader like that working
Have you seen grub invaders?
Yes
Yup
waiting for grub valorant
That's the one. Space invaders launched directly from the bootloader. No other os required
But imagine gaming with 100% of the hardware at your fingertips instead of wasting all this memory and CPU time on a background OS
Who says only one program could run at a time? In my theoretical system it could be seamless to transition from a small menu overlay
So a task scheduling operating system? 🧐
It might appear that way but I mean more like the OSD for your monitor kind of overlay, and having two programs run simultaneously would be trivial by simple multi threading.
I mean, not completely trivial, you're gonna run into context switching at some point, but sure
Might be a good place to use a rtos
What might be really interesting is if you had your standard OS running on two cores only and then have the remaining cores cores dedicated to whatever intensive programs you need to run
Automatic core affinity
weggOS
hey one of my friends pressed on windows explorer in task manager and pressed end task and their computer has been on a black screen for like 10+ minutes with the pointer
Restart
cant you also just do win + r lol
yep fair point
anyone here happen to have experience with Deepfakes? I want to run stuff similar to what wombo.ai does (animating a still image), but with my own custom stuff.
im not sure if deepfacelab is the way to go with that, im also reading up on something called First Order Motion model, but im really not sure how to use that. if anyone has experience in that and can point me in the right direction that would be awesome 😄
yes deepfacelab is the key
too many tutorial in yt how to train your own data set
bunch of images in any angle
no blur allowed
too many lib besides that also do it like https://github.com/deepfakes/faceswap
deepfake uses = gan method
@shadow jay i think i found what im looking for
https://github.com/AliaksandrSiarohin/first-order-model
but...
got a lot to learn if i wanna do this
first step
figure out how to use python
lol
Fun way to learn how to code
If you put windows in hard drive does is make you pc run slower??
Yes
when you open something it slow too
If it's on the HDD, yup
hello, Im trying to download a 3.6gb iso for vista and chrome is downloading in kbs. It should be mbs but I don't know what is making it slow. I got a CAT8 Ethernet cable plugged into my laptop aswell
Probs the place you're getting it from
Ohh alright, I'll try another website.
Yeah. It was the website I was downloading it from, thanks!
Why are you downloading Vista
Also why did you buy cat 8
vista is the best... duh
@tepid silo do you happen to know anything about what the channel bonding specification would be for the comcast issued gateway?
kind of specific question lol
i cant find anything on google
i learned about it doing training videos at best buy today
i know 32x8 is the best, right
is 32x8 what comcast issues though?
yea, thats kinda why im researching lol
oh theres no rush lol i can probably figure that out on my own
was just confused because we get about 300mbps hard wired
Hmmm....log into modem and see how many channels are bonded. And what the snr etc is
Getting your own modem ensures you can take advantage of the over-provisioning by 20% that Comcast does. (If you have a 100mb plan they allocate 120mb to account for their modems being garbage)
Appears that way, what model is it?
Upload always slow. Youre probably 10-20 up yeah?
CGM4140COM
25mbps up yea
wired or wireless
google search says that it is 32x8...
That only means 8 channels available on the modem end of things, doesn't mean you'll actually get that many
tbh there's no real reason for cable modems to have slow upload to begin with, even 5 channels should carry 100mb no problem
Yeah it should do your 650 down no problem
Something something signal something, you know the answer lol
Look on the bright side, at least you don't have to worry too much about impedance matching on top of all this 😂
So, maybe someone here has experienced the same issue or has some kind of solution. I have 64 GB of Crucial Ballistix 3600MHz RAM (4x16GB). In every single RGB software that's available as well as things like OpenRGB, the software only detects 2 of the 4 sticks of RAM that I have. That being said, in terms of storage recognition, my PC recognized there are 64GB of available so that's not a concern. I am considering getting a new kit of RAM, thinking maybe that's the issue but honestly im not even sure anymore so any and all suggestions would be appreciated. My motherboard is the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master (Rev 1.0) and i have a Ryzen 9 5900X for my CPU. Please @ me with any responses. Thank you!
use RGB fusion
@crisp spireRGB fusion has the same issue
the RGB profile for RAM only applies to 2 of 4 sticks of ram
Follows the slot @molten bronze
if there r 2 sticks in any slot and 2 empty slots, works fine
as soon as i fill all 4 slots I begin to have issues
and sometimes it works but 99% of the time it isnt cooperative
i mean im considering another RAM kit but i dont wanna spend $700 on new ram if it isnt the issue
yea. I mean i may just go 1 stick at a time
and see how that works
Hey guys. Having a preparing automatic repair repeat outta no where today. Any advice on how to fix this and any idea what may have caused this? Using windows 10 and a new build by me about 6 weeks ago.
What kind of storage are you using for your boot drive?
Did anything update? Can you get into troubleshooting mode?
Cannot get into anything. I did not update anything today or recently that I can think of.
do you have a Windows bootable installation drive?
I don't bud
can you make one?
Here is a list of common causes:
Issues with Windows Registry
BOOTMGR (Windows Boot Manager) file corruption
Missing or damaged system files
Issues with the hardware driver (hard drive driver, motherboard driver, graphics driver)
Other unknown reasons
Thank you I'll try and do that thanks.
Good luck
@distant cedar I had to reinstall Windows to get any software to recognize my RGB memory. One more thing you can try.
...
Hey all im currently having a problem thats driving me insane :/
All of my programs (besides important windows stuff like files, settings etc) are not opening. They open, freeze, then close. Ive ran Sfc /scannow multiple times but it says there is no problem found. My current version is 21H1
A full system restore is my last resort
Emsisoft scan
Whats that?
Antivirus
The installer closes when trying to download it
No other machine….
Ill try booting in safe mode
Well it found PUP malware, hopefully deleting that fixes everything
PUP means Potentially UnPopular software, it could be nothing or it could be sucking system resources like Nos4A2
after that is gone
Seems malware bytes never detected any malware
Did you ever run it manually?
Yes
Interesting
Its detecting nothing else
My apps are actually working now
I can once again play tf2 and rust

Sure
Is it normal for System to use up 100% of my HDD
It stops using my hdd whenever i start an application
Is it just like running windows defender or something along the lines?
Depends on what it's running
If it's an HDD and not an SSD, yes, it's possible but it shouldn't be all the time
My laptop was horrible about that until I installed an SSD, Windows was just flogging it
It stops after awhile but uses it for a good chunk of time after startup
I have an SSD which windows runs off of so idk why system uses my HDD
After startup is normal, yes
huh, that's kind of odd TBH
What is installed on the HDD?
Everything that isn’t windows or Kerbal Space Program
Aight
If that's all that's on there I don't know why it would be using the HDD and not the SSD
Hey guys. Yesterday I posted about my PC not loading and going into 'preparing automatic repair'. I tried a number on things to troobleshoot by loading install media to a flash drive etc. I could not get anywhere doing anything recommended online for system restore, etc etc. Now the PC does not load anything and I just get a monitor logo screen TUF Gaming. Could my GT710 graphics card have been fried? It's not even 2 months old? I run a 5800x, X570 pro WiFi, 32gb ram at 3600, 1TB M2, RM850 AND 2 Asus 144hrts monitor one on DVI other on VGA convertor to HDMI? Any help is desperately needed at this stage. Thank in advance.
I could buy a 1660 super if that would help? My PC is not even that old and I'd settle for a full factory reset at this stage if it would work.
You've probably already checked your boot order settings, but also try toggling legacy boot mode on and see if the Windows bootloader comes up.
Were you able to boot to the recovery menu tools on the flash drive? If so you can always nuke your boot partition and rebuild it. It's obviously a drastic step but I've had to before.
I just so confused right now how everything was fine 24hrs ago and now I have nothing :(
I can even get to recovery menu I don't think.
If you can't even get the USB to load the next thing to do is clear the CMOS
Sorry bud. I'm very new to PCs. What is CMOS and how do I clear it?
(This is from Intel but applies to all desktops)
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000025368/processors.html
Defines CMOS technology and how to clear CMOS using the jumper or battery methods.
Will check this now. Thanks.
Battery method is typically recommended
Did you make sure to have pc unplugged while taking out battery?
Yes indeed
Is there a software that can tell you exactly what is bottlenecking your pc? I’m upgrading my pc part by part and I want to know what to upgrade in order
Your pc will never not have a bottleneck
Just tell us your specs and we can help ya out
Ryzen 7 (I forget the number), b450 tomahawk max, GeForce 2060, 650w power supply, 16gb ddr4 ram
I think the power supply was gold rated
Been a while
No need for a motherboard upgrade? Let’s say I upgrade to a 3070
Nope
Nice. Only need to spend 3k in that case
PCI-E gen 4 doesn't do anything for GPU's, PCI-E 3.0 just fine
yes
Motherboard upgrades are only really for cpu upgrades
Maybe check what Ryzen 7 you have, if it's 1st gen i would recommend an upgrade but everything else is fine
4th gen 5800 if Amazon isn’t lying to me
Ohh then i wouldn't change a thing for now
Hey guys. Im back again asking for some brains. I built PC for the first time about 5 weeks ago. Everything was working fine and on Monday it just went dead before going in to preparing automatic repair loop. I tried various things before dead... system restore and I had 2 different shops look at it... both said it is the motherboard. ASUS TUF GAMING X570 PRO - WIFI (beta bios). I swapped this with a new one and im getting the exact same problem. I cannot even get into a windows installmedia off a flash drive. Nothing. Only bios. Please can someone help if you have any idea?
youre gonna have to reinstall windows using the media creation tool i think
sounds like corrupt windows install not motherboard
or downgrade the bios to non beta
Thank you for responding. How do I remove the current one? Do I need a new SSD? I cannot even boot to my stick with install media on it. I'll format the disk and start again I guess?
ehh try donwgrade the bios to a non beta first
then install windows again if that doesnt work
I can't seem to allow programs to do anything in C:/ProgramData. I've tried just about everything i can think of and been googling for a while but with no solid results. I've ran into this problem several times before, I don't remember how or if I resolved it. I only ran into it again because I was just trying to install the epic games launcher. Here's a screenshot of the error. I'm using an administrator account and I've already tried giving the "Everyone" group full control of the ProgramData folder. Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions appreciated.
It'll most likely depend on the software, so not really worth checking
How much do I gain from disabling indexing on Windows really? Thinking if it was even worth it. Also O&O Shutup10 I disabled telemetry, automatic updates, updates in general excluding drivers, and turned off Windows Defender. It regularly fails to suppress windows from attempting automatic updates and telemetry. I've done registry edits, services edits, and the other one I can't recall atm. Only successfully suppressed Windows Defender from running. The rest Windows keeps fighting with me on it and it's annoying. Still have no idea how I deleted Windows Defender off of my laptop. Still trying to repeat that on my desktop.
5600X/3080/3600Mhz cl14
Tried cleaning up Windows as much as possible. 0-1% utilization at idle
Is disabling indexing make a meaningful difference on a higher end computer, or should it only apply to something like my ASUS VivoBook that's pretty crappy?
Sounds like you should try linux
Inconvenient
So is going through the hassle of disabling all those other things but if it made an impact it would make more of an impact on not as powerful hardware
I'll elaborate. I can't play certain games on Linux. My bad for not being clear.
Dual boot linux?
Why?
Whats wrong wit h mac os
I think macos icky but that's just me
Also hackintosh effort
I can make an efi folder for you if you wanna try it out
itll be pretty much plug and play for ya
I like making hackintoshes
Hmmmmm mayhaps i could always through on my old sata ssd so don't have to partition my nvme
Could you do that with a 5600X/3080?
Why would I want to dual boot with Linux? Mac OS I get, but I'm not so keen on complicating going from games to basic work on something with a bunch of compatibility issues. Sure I get a handfull of programs actually run better, but Adobe suite of applications weren't working. Then again that was a long time ago last I checked.
Ofc
Afaik adobe support is weak yeah but didn't know you wanted to use adobe ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Ofc?
Well that and a lot of non steam games, forgetting that roughly 30% of titles on steam don't play nice.
Of course
Hence the dual boot, game on windows everything else you can do on macos/linux
Some dude who was testing steam games and giving them colored ratings through proton? Or whatever it was called developed by Steam.
Mac OS for programs like Final Cut Pro would be cool.
Oh so it's called proton. I was doubtful because all I can think of was ProtonMail.
I think it's proton I'm not 100% sure tho
Yes
just wanna point out game support is loads better on linux than macos tho
Oh I never even think about games when it comes to that wasteland of recreational content that is Mac OS
All business
THE EXCLUSIVEEEEEESSSS
The programs that come with Mac OS and the integration with iPhone. The privacy and control of Linux, and the compatibility of Windows. Dream os
Final Cut is like an apple product?
LMAO NOPE
You're already breaking your windows to the point of causing issues, so why not
Doesnt break windows if you dualboot macos
Excuseee me? I didn't break it? That was the past 2 times before formatting everything.
All those things being disabled are gonna cause issues
What AV software are you using in the place of windows defender?
So you didnt break it but you broke it twice?
Nah brother. Me screwing around with the registry is what screwed me twice.
Don't touch the registry unless you know exactly what you're doing
Reason: Bad word usage
lmao
Oops
F'ed around the first time with reg and bios config when I used to have my 3600/2060
Tldr, it's not usually making all but the most basic performance tweaks on windows
Who knew you could trip several BSOD just from BIOS 😊
Windows Defender is an okay enough antivirus as long as you're not being stupid.
Somehow deleted it off my laptop.
It has the potential to break a lot of stuff and doesn't gain you anything
Literally everyone who knows even a little about how their pc works
You get more performance from a basic oc than this sort of stuff
TBH just slap on syncxes debloater on a windows install and call it good there
I got paid recently to help someone fix the performance issues on their PC. Lady said the Internet was not working, but it actually turned out a program was eating so much processor and RAM it slowed it to a crawl. Turned out someone had installed Malwarebytes on her computer without disabling Windows Defender and they were conflicting something awful. Since Malwarebytes was being stupid and wouldn't let me actually get in the program (It kept wanting to enable the free trial of the Premium version), I just uninstalled it and made sure Windows Defender was properly turned on. (This was for an older lady who was basically just surfing the Internet.)
And if you do disable automatic updates, make sure you update manually every few days
Security patches good
@cinder mauve what games do you play?
You screwed up that much too?
Warzone, Cold War, Kingdom, Apex, Fallout 4, Fallout New Vegas, Minecraft, Captain Forever. That currently, but sometimes I go back to old ones.
The BSOD codes never hinted remotely towards BIOS config in my experience wasting hours on forums.
A question is not delusions.
Why so? Security updates?
Yup
I stay on top of driver updates
I don't screw around the net to care about anti-virus. Most breaches are through human error and I stay almost exclusively within my home wifi wired. I'd agree if it was disabling firewall for "Durrr lower pinggg" or some other stupid advice.
Zero days don't need you to do anything stupid
But buggy bios can cause crashes etc
For a laptop, especially a slower one, you benefit a lot. I questioned the need for it on my higher end system.
They can be deployed through a specially crafted image
Now I do. Trial and error. Learn someway.
So you don't go onto the internet at all then? Only use the internet to connect to other pcs on your network? If so not safe
You gotta be super careful
Trial and error is not knowing exactly what's going on with registry, that's the sort of thing where you want to find and read the documentation
I've heard of that. Wouldn't be a problem if I use discord exclusively on my phone and distrust others from downloading files.
AME
Services, has a helpful description for every one.
Or brick - _-
Hard to do tbh
Does zero day affect Intel only?
Well brick only happens if bios update and bye bye power really
No zero day is software related usually
No?
But can be any hardware
I don't like Windows updates. I used to do security. Now it's apps and drivers.
Bruh
Keep your computer updated
Even if you have AV always update asap
Wouldn't bricking situations still have power, but it's a useless board nonetheless?
You're going into battle without a shield and then just letting your armor fall off
That's just dumb
Add a spear without a tip to that
What lol
It's just questions man. My recollection of all the flaws are a jumble. Intel chips have an inherent security flaw, and I couldn't remember what. Are zero days remotely?
Only place AV isnt needed is a pc with no wifi or ethernet
So a stick XD
Yes.
A missile launcher pointed at you and youre running in with a stick
Amd have similar things to meltdown which is what you're thinking about
Or usb ports XD
Specter and meltdown are a bane
Zero days are security vulnerabilities that are discovered in the wild before they're found in the software
Yep
You loose power in bios update process
So not a specific. Gotcha
Bricking in general was what I was thinking. Not everything bricked lacks all power. Not specifically talking about mobos
What now?
I mean, yeah. You can put power into something that's bricked
It just won't do anything
I'm trying to learn a thing or two, and recall other things from long ago. I gotta start somewhere.
I would recommend not learning them by trying to minimize your computer
You're playing with fire that you don't understand
The discussion, not the computer
I understand the common sense risks of lowering walls. Not firewalls, but you know what I mean. I'm not invulnerable.
I remember the last time I stripped windows down to the bare essentials
Firewalls aren't really that much protection from most attacks
There were like 5 things in the menu that comes up when you press the windows key
and half the OS was stripped out
including explorer
Firewalls are common place enough that most attacks will either go around them or penetrate right through them
Wouldn't Linux be worse security wise in comparison. Or does the kernel make a big difference?
The windows defender firewall is not great
ofcourse that was a second windows install on my pc and it was to get as much score out of my OC on timespy
What firewalls are there other than blood sucking anti virus programs?
It was deleted soon after the run
No, Linux is constantly being scanned for vulnerabilities. Windows can't be scanned like that
Additional. most attacks out there are targeted at windows user
Constantly as in hundreds or thousands of work hours every day
Maybe more
Linux is what keeps the world running
It needs to be hardened
Combined with the better security work to start with, an actual robust firewall available, and most attacks ignoring Linux anyway, it's much more secure
And most of the attacks that are targeted at linux will be targeting servers and data centers, not common users
Doesn't sound invulnerable if it's something as simple being scanned from time to time. What I'm getting at is security because like Mac OS, most things aren't programmed for it? Am I getting this right?
How do you think windows security is handled?
updates virtually every day?
And where do those updates come from?
Their team that has a name tied to the Office branding. I forgot
Pen test too. A separate team
Reason: Bad word usage
Problem is that anyone outside of microsoft and their partners have a much harder time trying to do any of that
Linux is doing all of the same security scans as microsoft, except that it's distributed around the world with some of the best security experts available
Like I said, Linux is required to keep the world running. It needs to be secure
Like you said about zero day. Sometimes you're screwed from the start, or months without notice like microsoft this past year.
Yup
Linux and FOSS also tends to have better response time to zero days
Usually within a day
What things that Linux runs on to make the net run as needed?
Servers, the grid, phone network, internet backbone, satellites, cell towers, emergency response, etc
Is there a peer review process with Linux security updates?
Linux is FOSS. The entire thing is massively peer reviewed
Trust being the issue
So who makes the final decisions , or is it up to distros founders to make the decision?
Final issue for what?
Fixed
Decisions for what?
Security updates are reviewed by the software managers. In the case of the kernel, that's Linus and his team
Is it widespread, or up to each individual distros to have security updates implemented
Linus?
All main distros have them
Who's Linus?
Linus Torvalds
Cool last name
He's from Finland
