yeah He got the good version that can be SLI. A 2070 Super is the only model of that one that can be SLI. No other can be. Im trying to figure out is if someone were to try to would they be able to Software SLI them?
Don't you need sli bridge?
nvlink?
I would think SLI bridge. NVlink is the same thing as a SLI bridge I believe unless NVlink is the same thing as xfire with Radeon.
Software sli you mean without a bridge? I feel like I’ve heard of something similar before but has downsides
I @cinder mauve I found your soul mate ^

So does anyone have any idea as to how I get Teamviewer to work on wake up lan
@last gorge AMD has a similar tech. It's Crossfire
ye, i was just confused by question
He was wondering if there was a way to link 2 RTX 2070 together
Only the Supers have that capability for the 2070. Unless there's a software option for Nvidia like there is AMD I don't know if you can. That's why I had stated what I did.
I was wondering if I have windows 7 on an old laptop and I have the activation code, is it possible to use the activation code on a new desktop that I am building to get windows 10?
a laptop might be a oem key which is one use
Wait I’m building a pc wht is everything thing I need besides the basics
@radiant eagle prolly should go to #building-and-recc-chat or sum
@gentle osprey You can use the Win 7 OEM key to activate Win 10. Ive done it before with a code from a Laptop. It goes through a process with Tech Support though to get it working properly but it can be done. They just go in and change the product key in Windows to One that they pull from their system of available product keys.
They basically have to Authenticate the Win 7 key first before they do all that
Tyvm
Your Welcome
Most of the time now though they are accepting Win 7 keys though since it has reached End Of Life for Updates.
I tried asking but they didnt let me
what if you have an old Win 8 laptop that you don't care if its OS works anymore? (Because the hardware on it is so old and bad I don't intend to use again)
I would just install Win 10 and use the product key. Thats what Ive always done and I personally havent had any issues. Now Microsoft Could Have changed their policy's on that stuff since the last Time I have had to do it.
just last month i used a Win7 key for my media PC w/ Win10 on it
@fading crest So they are allowing them to be used to Activate Win 10 then since Win 7 is EOL at this time
hey can anyone help me with some usb 3.0 issues at all?
What Motherboard?
Most Issues with USB 3.0 can be solved by reinstalling the drivers for the motherboard
Ok. Im on the website looking right now
thank you
Try that Link
Its a Win 7 driver but it should Install. May have to set the install package to run in Compatability for Win 7
do i download all the drivers or just the usb one
Thats If It doesnt install properly straight fromt he executable file
Just the USB one Unless you need the other Win 10 Drivers. Then you just need to change the OS selection Up top to Win 10. There isnt a USB 3.0 option for Win 10 for that motherboard and its the Same driver for both Win 7 and Win 8
i mean my bios was last updated in 2013
If your on BIOS version F10e your good otherwise Download and install that verion of the BIOS
Will still need to Download and install the Driver for the USB 3.0 for it to work properly. Typically thoug Win 10 does that automatically but Im guessing in your case it didnt
mines F2 in 2013
Yeah You need to update to F10e
F2 is dated 5/19/2011 on the website
F10e is a Beta BIOS So if you want one that isnt a BETA Go with F9
That Could be when It was installed to the Board
You can do it through USB stick if you use a USB 2.0 port
i dont have a usb stick rn
Ok
can i do it through the link
That Link is the BIOS page cause Thats what I was looking at but all the Drivers for the motherboard are available on that page in drop down menus
thank you
wait what do i do with the files im new to pc sorry
do i use the windows batch file or the application
i have one that says autoexec and one that says FLASHSPI
autoexec
extract or run
extract
now what it didnt do anything
It should have extracted to a temp folder on your desktop
mhm it did
It should have a executable file that you can run
Help
Is that the BIOS File?
Mhm
Best way to do that is with a USB drive and Do it through the BIOS
Well see I just tried that and it kept saying it was the wrong file size
Huh. I dunno what to tell you unless you can do it through the App center once you have that installed.
App center?
Gigabyte App Center.
Oh ok
Or Download and Install BIOS from the Utility Section of the Support section for your motherboard that will allow you to flash the BIOS from Within Windows
@BIOS (AMD) Thats The one You want from the List
Ok thanks
No Problem
Do I save it to my partition drive
can someone help me with
virtualbox
imgur(dot)com/a/uexX1sB
i can't press "ok" even though i've fixed the problem
The symbol with the yellow triangle relates to the tab where the invalid setting is located
did you see the image?
cus i clicked on the symbol
I have a question. What would be a good cpu cooler (budget 150$ or less) for a ryzen 5 3600 on a msi tomahawk max b450 atx mobo
says invalid settings detected lmao @spark remnant
i did
then take another screenshot
do the links normally now damn it
its annoying
then go enable amd-v
default is off
oh i can post links now
look around the settings lol
there's more bios settings
I think my amd-v was grouped into the amd overclocking section
@spark remnant What Gigabyte Board is that> I have a B450 AORUS M
aorus b450 pro wifi
Ok Same Board I do then. Are you on BIOS Version F51f?
You just have the Pro Wifi Version
Oh You need the Virtualization turned on In the Bios. Had to go back up to see what the problem was
Give me a minute to find my Owners Manual
@spark remnant The Virtualization is Under M.I.T in the Bios Under Advanced CPU Core settings. Typically Found Under Advanced Frequency Settings. You will be looking to enable SVM Mode
oh thanks i did just now, was just looking for confirmation that that was the right thing! thanks for trying to help :)
Yeah No Problem. I looked in my Owners Manual to see where it was located
i thought i accidentally installed ubuntu onto host pc
Oh jeez
lol cus pc restarted
well, i got my first vm running finally
only took 2 hours and 50 gb
DAM
lol

Anybody know of a software I can use that reads my YT livestream chat?
It's annoying to have to open up my stream in a different tab to read chat. Also takes up WiFi
do you have obs?
go onto stream settings then if you can find chat it should say “pop up chat”
then copy that link that pops up
then browser source in obs/slobs
Oh thanks
may I ask a question here
go ahead
Does Newegg have any other electronics rather than the pc components
like for example, the electronics michael reeves uses to build robots
alright thank you
Good, you?
im doing fine
Though with specific electronic parts you might have better luck with Amazon, as they usually have a wider selection, but Newegg has a bit of everything.
oh ok
thank you
Im not exactly looking for electronics yet, but once I have my free time Im planning on building something
Im not sure what exactly though
for now Im just gonna take it easy
anyhow, thank you
hmm well
I am planning on doing that but
The thing is, Im getting mines pre built, however, I do want to learn how to change the graphics card incase it gets outdated
so I think it'll be useful to learn everything here
Building a gaming pc does sound interesting but idk if it'll be easy and Im anxious that I'll mess up on building one, which is why Im getting mine pre built
however, maybe I will try to learn how to at least change my graphics card
and what graphics cards I can use
Not sure if right channel, but have a question on "remote" game installs if you will. I have a data cap on my home internet so am curious about downloading files using laptop and then moving to computer. I know it is better to install the game to drive instead of moving files. Question is if i used a USBC to Sata cord, would it be possible to install games from steam onto a SSD from my laptop and then plug it into desktop?
Its possible but the registry entries wouldnt be on the desktop for that game along with you sould have to tell Steam to look in tha folder on the SSD for games
Biggest issue is the registry entries
I knew I would need to redirect steam, but didn't know about the registry entries. Don't particularly want to move Desktop around that much, but may have to take to friends to download everything to get started. Was hoping to just download stuff occasionally while at work.
Yeah For the system to rocognize software there are entries put into the registry. In all honesty I dont know why. It may have something to do with the OS knowing that its authorized or something like that.
Would there be a way to recreate or move the entries?
Doing that is not easy. You can easliy cause the OS not to boot if you dont know where to look for the correct registry entries when using REGedit
Hey guys, i am trying to install Linux Ubuntu onto my laptop in replacement of windows 10. I plugged in the USB installer and hit try linux. My mouse is working but my keyboard is not. Any help?
Never mind a reboot fixed it 😂
What verison of windows should I use in a gaming pc
Home or pro both work
Is pro any better
Bitlocker, remote desktop , group policy editor, active directory are the differences that matter most to (me)
ForksToday at 4:34 PM
Just install windows as normal, enter the key once windows is installed
ForksToday at 4:34 PM
If you want, you can enter the key during install
difference between these options?
is one easier then the other
difference is that you would type it in later 😛
Having major problems booting os
unlucky
Hello. I need help again.
My pavilion X3 60 laptop hard drive failed, I installed a new SSD crucial hard drive and was suggested the windows key would be found and reinstalled. Yeah operating system did not install. What steps do I need to take to reinstall a Windows operating system. Thanks for your help
get a usb, go to microsoft website, install the windows 10 installer, stick usb into laptop

Is this a good place to ask for help in regards to getting troubleshooting issues with a windows install?
Does windows education have a water mark?
Any version of Windows should not have a watermark as long as it’s activated

Hey guys. I’ve been thinking about trying to dual boot on my PC so I can have windows and Linux, just to try Linux, and I have a few questions about it if anybody can help me out:
- How does it work? When I boot up my PC, do I have to like select if I want to boot to Linux or windows or something?
- Can I just allocate 200gb on my secondary 2TB HDD to dedicate it to Linux? If not, I do have a spare 320gb I can use.
- What distro would you recommend? I’m a newbie to Linux.
Dual booting is fine - especially if you wanna game on linux
But you can try it out in a virtual machine - check out virtualbox or vmware workstation player
Ubuntu, linux mint are great starters
Never used a virtual machine. How does that work?
Also I’m totally new to the dual booting thing. I have no idea how it works
Tons of guides online/youtube
Main this is to install windows first
You want windows boot manager to call grub
Yeah, well, I already have windows installed.
What does “call grub” mean?
Okay, so what I’m seeing so far is that you just need to have either a separate drive or you need to “split” a drive into different partitions, correct?
I’m not done reading he article that’s just what I’ve retained so far
Okay and then when you finish setting up the dual boot, whenever you turn on the PC, it’ll ask you whether you want to go into Ubuntu or windows, right?
Do you think I should backup everything on my PC before I do this? I mean all I’m doing is just installing another OS right?
Yes to all the questions
And I’m guessing the process is the same for Mint if I were to do Linux mint?
Yup
Ubuntu/mint are identical with respect to installation /dual boot
Install/boot etc are all the same
Do you think I should either put my spare 320gb HDD in the system and use that or should I just make a separate 150-200gb partition on my 2TB HDD. The 2TB has a bunch of stuff on it, so would it be risky to use the 2TB?
Are you going to game on this linux?
If not - I'd just download virtualbox and install mint or something
Not sure yet. I kinda just want to try it out and get a feel for Linux
Ya, try the virtual box thing
If I use my spare 320gb, could I just take it out at any time and it wouldn’t dual boot?
I mean - you'd still see the dual boot choice screen
But you wouldn't be able to boot to whatever is disconnected
Gotcha
So a VM seems like what I want to do right now. How would I go about doing that?
I dunno, if you have a spare drive that's a pretty good choice
For a VM?
Alright. Thanks for the help Forks and Bob
Virtualbox is fun
Hey so on virtualbox it's telling me to select "Erase disk and install Ubuntu"
Yeah
And that's getting me spooked
oh okay phew
what’s the difference between w10 home and pro
there's some differences, but nothing major that will matter to an average user
The main difference is $60 of list price
lol yeah
home it is
my friend just built his pc and he's running everything bone stock (not even XMP) and he's been getting intermittent restarts with Kernel-Power errors and WHEA fatal hardware errors
i've only seen these errors when trying to undervolt
it's a fresh windows install and he does have a good enough power supply
anyone know what could cause it?
Where can I get cheap windows 10 keys
@last gorge is there anything else on that site worth looking for? Haha it looks interesting
not sure, i just know some people here have had luck with the win 10 pro keys, im not sure about the other software
¯_(ツ)_/¯
There was a crazy bundle but it was EU only it looked like
Honestly I work in IT and we recycle old win7 pro keys all the time which can activate win10 pro
So I never really think about licensing
ye that works too
i know im late but does anyone know the difference between the $29 version of windows 10 Home and the $129 (same version) on other sites...? I am trying to upgrade my kids computers and I want to make sure i can just buy one real copy and use it for all three CPU's for their remote work but im hoping i dont have to spend $100+ on each one just to use a safe CPU with a browser.
@past sparrow What are the specs of the computers?
some bios settings keep resetting like secure boot and screwing with my system, thoughts on why?
did u hit save
yes lol
very important step
i am hearing it could be dead cmos bat but idk
idk im going to sleep
night
night
is davinci resolve legit, ive been told by a friend online it was but a friend in person told me it was just a malware when he installed
Davinci resolve is very legit
it's extremely good for the price
I know some very good film schools has started using DaVinci over adobe
@pearl ore It's legit. Your friend likely just downloaded a fake version
Just make sure you get the legit version and not some "cracked" or "FREE! DOWNLOAD NOW!" version, as with any software
yes it is very legit
is davinci resolve legit, ive been told by a friend online it was but a friend in person told me it was just a malware when he installed
@pearl ore i use davinci resolve, its amazing concidering its free, and my anti virus also said it was malware
@cinder mauve which one do you have?
@dense mirage anti virus?
Yeah
Meh
Lot's of false positives, guzzles system resources, and doesn't really block that many attacks
Has some security issues of its own soon
I usually just recomend windows defender coupled with ddds.
That's enough for pretty much any situation
Just use windows defender, if you think I file is virus upload to virustotal.com
If the site says majority virus than it might be a virus
I have an issue with my windows 10
Like 3 or 4 years ago I had a windows 7 and that hard drive was dying i went to a computer shop and bought a Kingston 240 gb ssd and the technician offered me to update my windows 7 to windows 10
So they changed my old hard drive to the new one and they installed my windows 7 and the new SSD and then made it from win 7 to win 10
And it worked flawlessly for all this time but few weeks ago I bought new mobo, ram, processor from newegg.com and now it is saying I need to activate windows
The thing is I have tried to activate windows but I have not been able because its not letting me do it online
And I do not have windows key myself
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I haven't been able to tweak the BIOS on the Aorus board because someone told me to update everything on windows before touching the BIOS to avoid compatibility issues
AND I AM GOING CRAZY
you might be SOL, it's a windows licensing thing. normally you can just convert to a digital license by signing in with your microsoft account, and registration will just follow you from machine to machine when you sign in, but the exception to that is the windows 7 upgrade
it won't create a digital license in that case
so you might just need to pick up a cheap ebay or gvgmall key
and re-register
cost will be like $5-15 probably
and once you buy the key and they send it to you, you just go to settings > security > activation and enter the key
@wheat quest seriously? I was about to blow 200 bucks on a new windows
yeah don't do that lol
I do not trust ebay
The other place you said is legit? Have you bought from them?
@wheat quest ?
yeah, i bought a gvgmall key for a friend of mine
and they haven't had any issue
issues*
@wheat quest I'll give it a try, thanks for the helpful info. I'll let you know how it goes.
Do I need to buy the product key for windows or can I just use the installation media made off my old computer without it
you don't need the product key to install windows, you can skip that step and enter it later or not at all if you don't mind a watermark @dense ether
Okay cool
if you do want to buy a key, you can find cheap on ebay or software-codes.com i would only buy right when you want to enter it in tho
Yeah
depends on your original software. if u buy it direct from microsoft u can usually reuse the key but the cheaper ones u get from 3rd party vendors can only be applied to one motherboard
depends which you get, oem is only for one pc, but some places like software-codes does sell retail codes that can be moved to other pcs, some people here have checked and they seemed to be legit retail. tho 5usd is a lot less than 100usd so it's not a huge deal to buy multiple in the case you have a oem key
or big brain it and buy a super cheap key to go with the new inte lga1200 socket and that mobo should last a while
lol
I'm stealing the windows installation media off a laptop I doubt I can take the key from it
laptop probably has a oem key so ye probably not
installation media is free on microsoft website so that should be no problem
Yeah
I just built a new pc with a asus x570 p motherboard and when i turn on the pc none of the keys are working to get into the bios and then a screen titled american megatrands comes up listing my pc parts and says press f1 to start the setup but that dosent work either. If a press the delete key or hold down any key when turning on the pc then it says keyboard not detected. I have an annepro 2 so i have to hit FN then the F1 key so i dont know if this could be a problem can somebody please help me.
I just built a new PC which was working well for a few hours, but after I went out for dinner, I got a side by side configuration is incomplete error for every app except chrome. i've tried deleting browser data, restarting my pc several times, and even resetting my PC doesn't work(I am literally not able to reset the PC, I get an error when I try. Does anyone know this problem?
can anyone pls help
me
chkdsk is now always running on startup and if i dont pay attention to cancel it it will run for hours
this is what i did to try and fix it idk what it means owo
C: is dirty but for most pcs its not
should i run the chkdsk?
ping me or dm me
@wheat quest thanks again it worked very well and was fast only took like 10 minutes
alright
thanks!
it's working now, my drive isn't dirty anymore
i think it's because i ejected a disk drive off of my PC a couple days ago and it screwed stuff up
can anyone help with my problem?
What exactly is chrome doing?
nothing, chrome is normal, but if i try to open anything else i get the error
What exactly is the error
"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect"
windows
What version?
10, 8, 7?
Did you just install any new software?
i installed the drivers and some games recently, but other than that i dont think so
just chrome and other web browsers
i got "windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them"
wdym
Run this command now dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
i got the source files could not be found
still doesnt work
i get an error
i cant uninstall anything
i get an error that says it might have already been uninstalled
Can you install a new one?
no
Also errors out?
yea
Do you have any important information on the PC?
no
Nothing on there that can't be deleted?
no
Reinstall windows
i tried resetting earlier, but i got an error when trying to do that
ye i feel reinstall best bet, and reinstall is not the same as reset, reset this pc often fails
windows installation media on usb drive
oh when i tried plugging in the usb with windows installation media on it it disables my mouse and i get no signal
You might need to use your keyboard
Reboot the pc, and select the USB as the boot device
i cant get into bios with the usb plugged in
What motherboard do you have?
gigabyte b450 aorus pro wifi
do you have fast boot or something turned on
im not sure
Can you get to bios normally?
if i unplug the usb i can get into bios
Okay
Can you get to the boot device select menu? spam click enter, f10, and delete as you boot
no, cant access that
What state are you in?
california
lmao
Can you go into bios normally, go to boot order, and move all options mentioning USB to the top?

the only option in the boot order is my drive
Try a cmos reset
how do i do that
Disconnect power, remove the little watch battery from the motherboard, and hold down the power button for one minute
Can you access the bios now with the USB in?
still no
Do you have a microcenter nearby?
no
Try going into the bios, then inserting the USB
their service in most parts is down 😦
After the USB is in, switch around between a few of the menus and then come back to the boot device selection
neither my mouse or keyboard work
in bios?
yea
What usb ports are they plugged into?
Try reformatting that USB
how do i do that
Go to windows, redownload the iso
Dang
Okay
I honestly have no clue what to do at this point. Do you have any other USB drives you could try?
seems very odd
So I need some help. My mom passed and didn't leave her password for her computer. I know I can reset it using a password reset disk but I want to get into her computer and see what apps she left running and not have to reboot the machine. Any suggestions?
Firstly, condolences on your loss. Secondly, assuming the machine is running Windows, do you know if it was setup with a Microsoft acct? And if so, do you have access to the email that was used for it?
Or was it just a local account on the machine?
Its a local account on the machine
you might not be able to then, without rebooting into a safe mode command prompt or something like that. you used to be able to trigger a run prompt from the login screen on windows 7 and earlier, and then you could do some command line trickery to bypass it
but in 10, i don't think it works anymore
there's always the brute force style option where you just start running through anything you think she might have used, names/words/numbers, etc
So I really messed up my Win10 install...
I downloaded the Intel network drivers from the MSI B250 (my mobo) support website.
After installing the drivers, it stopped recognizing my Ethernet connection.
It shows the "no WiFi" icon at the bottom right, but it doesn't show my Ethernet cable.
I've tried uninstalling the driver from devmgmt and restarting, I've tried uninstalling the Intel app that broke it, nothing seems to fix it.
yo what the peck
I went upstairs to double check an error message before mentioning it here, and suddenly my PC is connected??
so problem fixed?
I guess?
Wait no?
I just ran a speedtest:
I have gigabit ethernet. It was consistently ~900Mbps beforehand.
oh nvm again
It's the Speedtest app being idiotic. Uninstalled. The website works fine.
back to normal 🙂
Thanks anyways lol
i hav elike 22 upload mbps and 500 mbps
@upbeat sky There is a Default Admin user on the system that will override and allow access to a local account. User name is Administrator or Admin and it will be the same for the Password. This is a default microsoft has been building into Windows for ages. Ive known this workaround since Win 95 and it still works to this day. Try that. If that doesnt work you have to get into safe mode to change the password.
Also Sorry For your Loss
does anyone know how and where to get window key for cheap?
https://software-codes.com/ or ebay
@livid bluff unfortunately I set it up and its win10 and her account was the admin account.
@cinder mauve i got mine from gvgmall.com and was easy and fast.
I have an issue with my Microsoft wireless mouse and I don't know if it is hardware or software
The issue is when I connect the mouse in the front IO ports it starts freezing and jumping and disappearing
But when I connect it on the back ports it works fine
@upbeat sky It is still a default Override thats built into Win 10 thankfully. Like I said if that doesnt work youll have to get it into safe mode
could be a range issue, could be a issue with front io so i would try the back, check manufacturer website for drivers
@last gorge drivers for? For mouse? I have searched the web and there is no particular drivers for mouse
should be fine then, just making sure it doesn't need any kind of external drivers
@last gorge i am scared because the system is totally new
what mouse is it
try taking a look at this https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/531275-jumpy-jittery-wireless-mouse-common-causes
What are the common causes for jumpy / jittery wireless mouse? I've tried using them on my work PC many times and I get frustrated over the amount of jitters I get from it. I've...
Who needs a mouse?
@dense mirage if you know any illuminati way to play an mmo without mouse let me know
Sure
touch screen, touch pad, that weird little joysrick in the thinkpad keyboards...
if anyone knows anything about centos i need halp, it appears as if internet does not exist. cannot ping google or even default gateway. i don't see any network config present. not sure how to set it up
@last gorge what image of centos did you use?
minimal
Okay, this should be fun
lol
You on ethernet or wifi?
ethernet
nice, it does have wifi too but i don't feel like using it
wifi is harder to set up, so yeah
/usr/sbin/ip it says
is there something i should look out for there, should i try to send pic?
A pic would be good. The main thig we're looking for is the interface names, which will be just after the numbers in the list
It will likely be something like en0
Of course they had to name it that 🤣
So the interface is up, which is a good thing. Does your internet have any odd setup?
Not that I know of besides some port forwarding, also it would be easier if this pc had static 192.168.1.30 local
nmtui
Highlight edit a connection, and press enter
K
Select the ethernet option, and press enter
Go down and check the "Automtically connect" box
How do you check it
Space
Oh
Did you set the profile name and device, or was that supplied
It might be necessary to change the Device
Is there something specific I should change to
Done
Go down to <OK> and save the changes
Got it
Go back to the main menu, and select Activate a connection
Well that’s not good
Yes reopening it was the same
K
Set IPv4 confuguration to Automatic
Still blank
Trying it out to replace a media server, didn’t want to use windows it is only 2 core
What would you suggest
Ye
Do you have an nvme drive?
No only hdd
Alright I’ll give it a try
Ubuntu is an open source software operating system that runs from the desktop, to the cloud, to all your internet connected things.
A lot easier to set up
CentOS kinda assumes that you're going to have some huge server room setup for internet
And not gonna lie, internet is black magic
Alright I let ya know if there are any more issues
👍
i lost my usb 😤
oh god more issues im just gonna sleep
I have a i7-7700 Dell XPS 8920.
I'm removing the HDD & replacing it with SSD
When cloning my HDD:
1- should I also clone the Intel Optane to SSD?
2- should I disable Intel Optane before cloning?
3- Once cloned, do I even need the Intel Optane, since I'll be on SSD?

Is there a way to get a cheap license of photoshop, illustrator and indesign?
-
Is there a way to extract an already installed photoshop, illustrator and indesign from an old dying laptop? If yes, how?
-
i know there is a listing for a cloud sub 12month cheaper at software-codes.com it's a site some people use for windows keys but idk if it works for the adobe. that kind of stuff is not often found cheaper besides adobes sales
-
i don't think so unless you have a license or activation key. i've had adobe tell me apps i have are illegal copies in the past, could possibly take a look at this https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop/how-do-i-transfer-photoshop-from-one-computer-to-another/td-p/5438624?page=1
I recently purchased a new computer and I need to transfer my photoshop to it from my old computer. Is there a way to do this or do I need to purchase a new one?
@last gorge thanks for the info

I downloaded Macrium to clone my old HDD to SSD.
There are 6x partitions listed here (can't post pic yet)
How do I know which one is the Intel Optane (which I don't want to clone) & what exactly are the other partitions?
Do you desktop or laptop?
Desktop
Prebuilt or custom?
Prebuilt
Dell XPS 8920 i7-7700
My guess is that you have the windows recover partition, a dell recovery partition, the optane partition, and your system partition in there
No clue what the others two are
Ok, now who knows how to fix this:
1- Turn power on computer
2- Screens stay black for almost 3-5 minutes
3- Dell Icon never comes up
4- After 3-5 minutes, my log in screen comes on
5- I log into Windows like normal
I can't enter Bios and I never see the Dell Screen. Is there something I can do to fix the boot up process?
Ultra slow hdd? used to wait some min to start my PC with my old 5400 rpm hdd 10 years ago
Sounds Like a Hard Drive thats about to bite the dust @wide pawn
I've successfully cloned the hard drive to an SSD but I'm still having the same issue using the SSD
Thats Odd. Only other thing It could be is massive fragmantation then
Thats just in my experience though
Its Ok To Defrag a SSD once in awhile just never Defrag a M.2 as it messes up the memory controller
Could the bad sector from the HDD possibly clone to the SSD, creating the same issue?
That I dont know about. I mean its a possability cause the files on the bad sector would be hard to read
hmmm
Defragging would fix that though based on my experience
Ok, I'll give that a shot. I'm running out of options to make this computer boot up quicker & actually get into bios. haha
Reason: Bad word usage
ooofs
lol
Don't say it again whatever it was 🤣
Hammer the crap out the F2 or DEL key immediatly after you power it on. I had a Older Dell Laptop that was a pain to get into the BIOS
what does the button on the back of the computer do, right above the green light for the PSU? if I hold it down, the upper case fan turns on but nothing more than that
is that just to help "decharge" the system when you power down?
Can you take a picture of it and post it here?
Yeah Im curious myself
ttps://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/XPS-8920-Boot-problem/td-p/5835404
I can't post links yet
so just add a h at the beginning of this link
I'm looking at #10 in this diagram
ah
ok, hang on
#10 is what I'm referring to
#9 is the green light when you plug the computer in
I do Believe that is a Discharge Button
I think You just need to defrag and see if that fixes it
I just completed it, gonna restart computer....either I'll be right back or will be back in 3-5 minutes haha
Hmm Thats a Odd one
How old is the PC???
Im just wondering if Maybe Putting in a new CMOS Battery would help
Oh yeah the CMOS Battery Should be fine then
Then again Ive had to change the one on my Motherboard already. And I got my Motherboard Dec of Last Year
Yeah thats the way mine was to.
Hmmm I gues syou could try changing out the CMOS Battery but it will reset any custom BIOS settings you have
Nah, all factory
Yeah Then Changing the CMOS wouldnt affect you then.
Ok, well....I bought new batteries to try that. Just didn't want to never be able to boot up after I change it, if there is some issue
Also, just wondering. For factory PSU.....does the fan always turn on or is it only based on temp?
might you know?
On a Dell XPS Im not sure but typically the fan should always be running
Oh That Might Indicate a failing Power Supply then
Im not 100% sure but a failing power supply can cause longer than normal Boot Up times
So, here lies the issue. If I just replace the power supply, don't I need to enter BIOS for updating it or is it just "plug & play"?
Plug and Play
But You have to get one for Your System as Dell uses a proprietary connector for their motherboards
Yeah.
time to go hunting
Ebay But then again Newegg Might have them as well since the system is onyl a few years old
I saw a video on YT that showed someone running some commands in CMD for "start up" fixing....basically like reinstalling just the "start up" section
now I can't find that video either, cause I was going to try that out too & see if that helped
Ehhh Its sounding more like a Motherboard or power related issue
Cause if it was part of the Windows Boot up sequence It wouldnt go fast once Windows actually goes to load
gotcha - seems like this is an issue with Dell when you search Google & type "black screen, no Dell logo"
& i've tried to follow most of the posts but nothing has helped to this point
Yeah Thats why Im leaning more towards the Power Supply at this point since the fan doesnt spin
just curious, if the PSU is failing, does that mean it just isn't getting enough power at start up, causing the slow boot?
Yeah
Now I'm wondering if I should just replace with factory or look for upgrade. The computer is great but these Dell Cases are just so small, it makes things much harder
thanks for all the input @livid bluff really appreciate it
Yeah Not a Problem
Is there any way to fix windows store? It wasn't working before I activated it and stayed the same after I activated windows.
I have read all o have found on the internet but haven't been lucky enough
I'm trying to run obs on this laptop and I was wondering if the system requirements are adequate enough. It has a core i3 7100u and 6gb of ram. (Windows 10)
help i have windows defender that eat 30% of my cpu and 10gb of ram even if its not on do anyone have an idea ?
could be a scan, defender does quick scans from time to time, usually when the pc is started up
How can i limit this
it lag my pc very hardly even with my 3600x and my 16gb of ram
wait 10gb just for the one proccess
yes im sure
screenshot
I cant but i fixed the problem by restarting the pc
@azure sandal
probably a memory leak
how does arch work
Mostly it doesn't
was thinking about installing it on a 200gb partition
Have you used Linux before?
Mostly it's they give you a bare minimum system, and you have to setupa dn format the partition, copy some file over, chroot into the copied system from the live install, and then proceed setting up all you system services, packages, and drivers
Once that is done, you can try to set up a GUI so you don't have to use the command line anymore
It's an interesting journey
i wanna try it but i also dont wanna break my pc lmao
Do it in a VM then
as it is, installing mac os is already being dumb
adding another OS only gonna cause more issues lol
There is a very good chance of something going wrong in a first time install

Yeah
Yeah
lord forgive me
Have fun with that
good luck
lmao that sounds like so much fun
see this is why normal people use windows
@dense mirage do you think doing it inside a VM will be harder
like its for sure safer
but will the VM get in the way at all
welp
i swear every single time i try to open vmware it just disappears from my start menu
What is your purpose for installing arch?
learning
Gotcha
Yeah, do that
$5 on ebay
fancy
I'd guess that's not needed since it lives in vmware
yeah
thats why i decided to skip
i can also probably skip the network setup
since it thinks its on ethernet
right?
Ya, just configure vmware NIC as default/bridge
Anyone know how to wipe a user from Windows 10? No format or factory reset if it possible
interesting... when i was working on MacOS i was doing stuff with this
when i needed to mount my EFI partition for example
it was like disk0s1
i didnt know what it meant
sometimes it will leave their files on the pc under users but u can just delete that
and then they gone
@dense mirage
question
im using fdisk to create partitions
i typed l to list the codes
now im here
how do i exit this list?
Q
256MB is fine
alright
this is where i am right now
the wiki is kinda confusing
oh wait
was i supposed to do
p +256M
wait no
that wouldnt tell it to be EFI partition
wait im stupid
i missed the line that told me to type N
IM A GENIUS
haha no idea
Does googling the "efi variables are not supported ``" yield anything useful?
i tried
ah
this is where VMware is getting in the way
i had to enable EFI on the VM side of things
got it
Interesting
thank the lord
SHould stream it
i am, but in a different server
@dense mirage
I DID IT
am i cool now
i installed gnome
it reminds me of ubuntu
Ubuntu uses gnome, so makes sense
ugh its boot looping
fdisk /dev/sda, g, n, enter, enter, +256M, t, 1, n, enter, enter, enter, w, mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda2, mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sda1, mount /dev/sda2 /mnt, pacstrap /mnt base linux linx-firmware nano vim, genfstab -U /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab, arch-chroot /mnt, nano /etc/locale.gen, delete # before en-US, echo archlinux > /etc/hostname, nano /etc/hosts, add 127.0.0.1 localhost, ::1 localhost, 127.0.0.1 archlinux, passwd, pacman -S grub efibootmgr, mkdir /boot/efi, mount /devsda1 /boot/efi, grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --bootloader-id=grub --efi-directory=/boot/efi, grb-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg, pacman -S xorg, pacman -S gnome, systemctl start gdm.service, systemctl enable gdm.service, systemctl enable NetworkManager.service, exit, shutdown now
ezpz
i should mention thats for vm installation
i didnt change anything really
but now the wallpaper is bright
thanks arch, very cool
Sounds exactly like what a fake administrator would say...
I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR 😠
Administrator != super user.
Super user has more power
Lol, I ran into that issue with centos, have to add my user to the "wheel group"
Either that or the sudo group
yeah i got it fixed lol
i used visudo and edited that file
i checked, and i was already added to the wheel group
so i just enabled sudo for wheel group
there was no sudo group so i didnt bother to make one
That would do it
Awesome is fun
what terminal emulator do you use?
let me check rq
I use konsole
konsole ships with kde
Also cool-retro-term
https://github.com/Swordfish90/cool-retro-term
haha wtf who needs 500fps in a terminal window
is that a meme
or is it actually useful
Yeah, if you're printing out a lot of stuff a terminal can actually eat a decent amount of resources
Running yes pegs konsole at 100% CPU on my system
what does yes do
Prints out y forever
lol
lol
If you pass it any arguments, it prints whatever you passed it forever
useful
Yup
Pipe it into some shell script that you just want to select all the default options on
You want useful, get cowsay, lolcat, and toilet
Stupid Question: No hard drive means no OS, right?
You can boot an os off a usb drive
Yup
I don't think you can do that with windows though. It tends to complain about being run off a USB 🙄
Oh ya, I wouldn't recommend doing that with a standard windows install.
Maybe windows to go
But ubuntu, most linux, bsd etc are all commonly live booted off flash drives for temporary use
Yup
I prefer Beiber Linux
mangaka
actually a useful command though if you throw a head in there
cat /dev/zero | head -c16M > lol
Makes an empty 16MB file
ezpz
installing packages on arch feels like choosing what tweaks you want on your jailbroken iphone
super fun
as long as you are having fun mate :)
Guys PC constantly keeps crashing to BAD POOL HEADER error and also WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE error before I even do anything on the windows home screen. Any solutions?
@dense mirage @cinder mauve @cinder mauve ITS TRANSPARENT NOW AAAAAA
now im trying to make it blurry
blurrr
So, I was going to install my amd chipset driver, and I noticed that it said my os was "out of date".. I'm currently running windows 10 (edu edition) version 2004
great now I'm getting error 0x80240035 when trying to update
😔
Well I mean
Majority Windows 10 users at least
I still know nothing about registry editing
Use what?
😳
Is that like a system log?
Oh yes
Okay
