Also just put it back in the PC I set the SSD on and it booted fine. I attempted to just reinstall windows on the other computer but no partitions were listed
newegg where is the windows 7 support hmm or are the furry crisper devs lazy and cant code drivers exposed
Your obvious attempt at trolling will fall flat here
newegg will you drop support for windows 10/11 then because of the esu program exposed 2025
Newegg never supported Windows because it's not Microsoft
All Newegg provides is a license to use the operating system, which you can choose to buy or not
Wheres the windows vista newegg special edition
real
Bro wheres my templeOS support
That's simply incorrect. The FEATURE is called Recall, but the "AI" is still called Copilot.
Ok folks the troll is gone, back to your lives
He didn't even go to Apple/IOS
everybody knows there's absolutely no flaws whatsoever that anybody could ever complain about with apple/ios
Clearly that's why he didn't go there
Let's put the power button underneath the PC though yeah?
And the charging port goes underneath the mouse too
Go ahead and put the scroll wheel down there too
Where else could you have possibly put those though, it's just so convenient to have the usb port on the bottom of a computer mouse
Gotta put the usb port on the bottom of the 200 dollar monitor stand
(not included so it's useless without it or the $300 vesa adapter)
Can't possibly think of a better place for it
What, it goes on top of the mouse??
Ridiculous
Why would anyone need to use a mouse while it's charging?
That's just poor planning! Obviously!
Is there any way I can break wife’s old Chromebook and get it to install windows OS?
ummm probably not. or at least it wouldn't run well. From most chromebooks I've seen you can't even due to storage restrictions
linux is the most those pieces of crap can run
It won’t even run Linux
No drivers
then why even bother with windows lol

ChromeOS is really just idiotproofed Linux
So technically it would have been running Linux previously lmao
Ive gotten linux to run on 1 or 2 chromebooks but once it was installed you could install nothing else since there was no storage free lol
just dont install a gui
also damn how small would that storage be to not have any storage left after a linux image
well, tbf, even if you didnt need to install an OS, if the chromebook only had like, say 64gb of storage, it's not like you could do much with that anyways
you could... get a web browser
but then you're back to basically a chromebook lmao
i guess you could connect some extra storage to the usb and then use it as a crappy ish nas
emmc moment
32GB of effectively SD card storage
The ones I had only had 16gb emmc lmao
chromebooks are literal ass that's terrible
this was a lower bar than i expected
my expectation was 64gb with a low of 32gb
i didnt even dare imagine 16gb storage
💀
Even the LCD steam deck has 64GB of emmc storage
But it's miles better than the chromebook
hell, i give my sbcs a minimum of 64gb storage
How does one bypass this?
Bottom left, offline account
Oh 😭 i thought that was for sum else, Ty
Dont blame you for not being able to tell, typical scummy microsoft
Not really anywhere that is technically legal
Maybe you'll find someone selling their retail key on eBay or such
OEM keys sellers might be selling stolen keys on the grey/black markets
I think they got it covered via a dm
Perchance
Obviously to sell them a legitimate copy of windows
Alright so
Hey yall ive got a problem.
My laptop stopped booting into windows and only booted into the UEFI boot selection menu. I got a usb drive with a w11 installer/repair tool to fix it but after trying to use startup repair, my laptop's acting like I never had a windows install ever.
I know I have to install windows, but can I keep all of my important files? Some of these files are an absolutely need for work and school. I literally might have to drop projects and lose money 😭
most surefire way to recover files would be to use a live linux usb to boot into linux on the usb, then access the files to make a backup
if your drive was formatted correctly, technically you could just reinstall the windows OS, but if something aint quite right, you might accidentally wipe the whole drive
It already had windows before
I never really had any problem since I switched to win11 until now
But when I select "install windows 11," I've got to check a box that reads "I agree everything will be deleted..."
Nvm figured it out on my own I just had to use the old style installer instead of the simplified one
Anyone have experience using Pi-Hole? I want to set it up after work (unless there is something better?). I looked into it a little bit this morning, but I see things like downstream and upstream. Maybe some other things. I was wondering if someone could explain to me what those things are/mean and why I need them. Possibly how I need to set it up as well. Any help would be appreciative.
pihole is very easy to setup; you just run the installation script and input a few parameters
All you really need to do is run the setup, follow the instructions, and set your router to use it as your DNS so all your devices use it
I see. I thought I read somewhere that some people have issues with latency in games and have to set certain settings to combat that
You'll get a little bit of latency the first time you access a site or service but after that it'll be cached automatically
sounds simple. Looked at the website. Something about needing to install docker.. clicked the link, takes me to github with a ton of mumbo jumbo that I have no idea about.. still don't know how to install docker. LOL
github always confuses the heck out of me
i just got my used surface laptop 3. previous owner has set up windows 11 Pro (24H2) and activated it with a key. this required the owner to add a ms account which they gave me data for, including password.
i would like to know if i can use the key to activate windows 10 pro (yes i prefer 10 over 11) and link it to my own ms account (or just store they key for another time since i have others). so basiacally install windows 10 and get that key only linked to me and none of their data
license might be bound to the laptop so it might remain activated after reinstall
or you can check for the key in the windows activation settings if they used a retail key or whatever
also i wouldnt really reccommend windows 10 anymore due to it being quite close to eol
Nope. Keys only go forward, not back
You might be able to retrieve the key with something like magical jellybean
It will definitely read the key but whether it works to activate again is unknown
i know keys can be retrieved from activated windows installations but if I cannot use it for w10 ill just keep it for later. is the key not linked to the account? is it microsoft just asking you to set up one because yes?
The key is account linked but it's not a hard requirement
You can still use local accounts only and be activated
The account just makes it easier to reactivate
tfw forget to write down the activation key and the key is lost
That's when you whip out that magical jellybean
(assuming you threw out the retail packaging with the key in it)
win 11 always asks for a ms account when installing unless you know how to bypass that. so i guess ill get the key in case i upgrade to 11 on this same laptop
lost a key once when i was a kid and reinstalled windows 7 without knowing that windows needed to be activated
2 words: unattended installation
well, technically not fully lost
Bruh I knew Windows needed to be activated when I was 10 using windows 98
there was thankfully a license sticker on the pc
though i didnt know about that lmfao
so to me it was lost
you dont walk up to class and the teacher would be like "hey class today we're gonna learn about windows activation"
or at least that never happened to me lmfao
Fun fact: that sticker isn't the original key but basically a spare key. They install an OEM key at the factory but the sticker is retail.
interesting
Also you used to be able to use that spare key 3 times
That was intended for just in case you needed to reinstall a few times
i recently got myself an original windows 2000 installation dvd with the activation key sticker "required to be affixed to the exterior of the pc"
still sealed in perfect condition
just to give it a try
or keep it as an ancient piece of windows history
The activation server is long dead but you can use tricks to do a "phone activation"
i did that with xp a few times
just feels so strange to activate for free via a phone call
cant even say im surprised lmao
In hindsight it's so obvious
apparently downgrading to windows 10 pro kept it activated with that same key. btw it is an oem key so afaik it cannot be used on a different pc
tbh the latest version 24H2 of 11 pro is not that bad, they got many problems fixed and added (back) a few nice features
however that 3.5gb idle ram usage is just crazy, and I don't understand where that extra gb compared to win10 is going
It's going to all the apps they install by default
You can debloat it pretty good, just leave the xbox related stuff like game bar and the xbox app since that's related to the thread scheduler
Alternatively you could just, not care. If you're running an application that needs the ram the system will reallocate it
Though windows deboat is pretty easy with the script
i have a problem with downloading directx12 where everytime i use the dxdiag tool the page is blank
Directx 12 isn't a thing you have to download
If you did then you probably downloaded a virus or spyware
It's built into Windows 10/11
i meant just directx
every time i try to launch a specific game to test dx12 it says that my gpu drivers need to be updated but they already are
Right, directx 9-12 is built into Windows and requires no download.
Have you tried ddu yet?
?ddu
DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) Guide by Pato
https://github.com/NeweggTechie/Graphics-cards/wiki/How-to-use-DDU
my pc won’t connect to wifi even with wifi antennas
Have you installed the drivers?
My WiFi antennas don't need to go anywhere
Not sure how to word this, but I have a non boot drive (internal ssd) I want to replace with a upgraded drive (internal ssd) I bought, when I go to install it, it can't find the os. I made sure to point it towards my c: but it says I need to install windows, I plug in the original ssd, and it will boot up, but there's nothing in that drive
Edit: I installed a boot OS on my flash drive to install windows, connects the new drive and the new ssd does work, but brings me to the install window, with the option to reinstall windows on my current plugged in drives or the new ssd, which I don't want to do
I am a little confused, if this was only a data drive the only thing you need to do if swap drives with the system powered off, boot the pc into windows and initialize the new drive with the drive management app. On the off chance it doesn’t boot into windows you may have to go into bios and double check the boot priority. A windows usb install disk would not be needed
i wonder if the bootloader got put onto that drive
Ye
hi
sorry for the late response
any way to confirm that?
Yep it's like they thought
EFI is the partition the BIOS looks for when it tries to boot
sorry for the cursing
Understandable in this case
is there anyway to idk, change the efi system.. to the C:?
last thing i want is to format
Windows like to install the bootloader to a different drive for some reason, it's done this since Windows 7 and everyone hates it
What you can do is copy the first 2 partitions to the new SSD
any guide on how i can do that
You can put the new drive in and copy them with macrium reflect, it's pretty self explanatory in the program
oh like a drive reader
there's a problem bob, i can't do it cause i don't have the i/o for the ssd lol, my psu thats connected to the drive is on it's life line right now
once unplugged, i get no OS lmfao
I see 3 SSDs (and an external drive) on that system, you'd be able to boot without your F drive at least
Unless that's using a different interface, which is something I can't tell from here
different interface, thats a nvme
Right, so without installing Windows all over again I do have a workaround, but it's not easy to do and will require you to go into the windows installer to run commands.
This is why Linux users hate windows
It's just inexplicable some things that it does
Do you have a USB drive with the windows installer on it already?
yes sir
Good, so go ahead and switch the new drive in and load up that installer
What we're going to do is tell Windows that the boot files are corrupted so it tries to recreate them where we want them
When it loads up select the language and proceed to the next page
Neither, press shift+F10
Kk
It should open a command window
Yep
Kk
Find the new drive if you can, if it's in the same place as the old one it'll probably be drive 0 again
I see it
Whoops,
select disk 0
Nothing
Sure
create partition primary size=100 id=c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b
What the heckk
That tells it to create a 100MB partition that will be identified as the EFI partition
That's why it took a second lol
It worked that time?
Yes
Great
format fs=fat32 quick
Done
Pick a different letter then
Lol I realized
As long as you remember which one you use, I fogot the installer mounts as X
mkdir V:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\
Done
bootrec /fixboot
Access denied
I'm the lucky one to get it
Nah it's every install that would have it, you're just the lucky one that needed to use the command

Did you happen to catch which letter your Windows partition is on
C
Even in the installer? Because it sometimes gets recognized as D with multiple drives
Nope the one where Windows is installed
If you're not sure then go back to diskpart
list volume
Always good to make sure
bcdboot c:\Windows /s v: /f ALL
The spaces matter a lot here
then
bootrec /rebuildbcd
Y
Lmao
"Oh I found this, add it? PSYCHE"

Let's see what it's done so far with the boot partition
dir V:\EFI\Windows\Boot\
That should list any files located there
If the files are there, maybe it did work after all
dir V:\EFI\
dir V:\EFI\Microsoft\
Didn't I do that one?
I think we did Windows instead of Microsoft lol
Oh
My bad there
Well the files are definitely there
It's worth a shot at this point, we can always come back to this point if it doesn't work
Fingers crossed
Uh oh
Ok, so it worked
Got scared for a sec cause it went to the installer, but I had to take out the flash drive
So all I gotta do now is map a drive to the new ssd, when I do that tho, does it have to be the V drive we did earlier or can it be any letter?
That only applied that that instance of the installer, you can use whatever letter
You'll need to make a new data partition first, which you can do from disk management in Windows
Already ahead of u on that
Could kiss u dude/ma'am, if there was a tip option on discord, you get the max tip (20%) in my country
lol just happy to help
I can't tell you how many times I've done this but I definitely learned it the hard way
Lemme guess, accidental format?
Nope, Windows 98 upgrade to XP
Did not go well
That was the first time
The commands haven't changed a whole lot since then, just the syntax and bugs involved
I'll try to remember this in the future if I need to actually upgrade my c drive to a bigger storage
But thanks alot u saved me time and stress by giving yourself time and stress. Sorry, but I really appreciate it
Want my 120gb ssd, lol
I would have a use for it at least but no thanks
Oh, cause I have 0 use for it now
Was used as a singular drive for fortnite, but that game just keeps on getting bigger
Probably a good idea to check when I'm back, but stupid epics has it so that file migration is next to non existent for egs so I have to reinstall the whole game
does anyone have any experience with salad mining? im tempted to try it but idk if its even worth it
it is not worth it
they package it like "oh it's easy to use" (which tbf it is) but you get way less than you probably actually mine
im just looking for some way to get use out of my pc when im not home tbh
do folding@home
you dont earn any money but it supports medical research
uses cpu/gpu cycles to simulate protein
bunch of people promoted it back during covid to help with covid research, but you can also decide if you want to do simulations for other areas like cancer research
might look into that
Im curious how much its actually helped medical research
I've been folding instead of running my heater, I was going to use that electricity for heating anyway so might as well make it useful
fr
Not bad
And i assume you can fold and stop folding as you please? Say run at night and the morning but turn it off in the afternoon
Yep you can pause it at any time
You can even tell it to pause after it finishes the work it's currently doing
So if it's a "I want to use my gpu but it's not urgent, I can wait 30 minutes" thing they have you covered
i think they let you pause your work unit for like over a day iirc? so if you want to do some gaming with some buds for a while, you could resume after like a day or 2
i remember seeing an exact number in the past but i dont remember what it was
but i do remember it was a fair bit of time before they assume you arent resuming
It's about a day before your work gets reassigned yeah
Do yall run your pcs 24/7 for this or?
yeah
well, not just for this.... well, actually only for this nowadays
used to run a few private game servers for myself and friends but they're dead so they're offline
I've just been running overnight mostly when it gets cold. Set the thermostat to 62 and let the PC do the heating. It can get me from 64 to 70 in 8-10 hours at night.
what the hell
idk why it suddenly started happening but i keep trying to disable this (since i use fancontrol for the fan curve) but it keeps turnint itself back on like 5 seconds later???
Almost finished my first fold
Hope to do more in the future

if you go in the settings cogwheel you can also enable gpu folding as well
Will do, was wondering why it was cpu only
Oh shoot i can use both my integrated and dedicated
Lol true
Integrated takes forever so make sure you have the time to commit on that
Yeah theres a pretty hefty difference loll
Id only do integrated overnight
Also whats the point in joining a team
Oh lmao
Then idk which one to pick
leaderboards
just for sense of acomplishment
also "free advertising" kinda if somebody looks at the leaderboard and sees your company or whatever on it lmao
like a few people have done there
Then whats the point of charity if youre just doing it for attention 😭
Some people need that little extra because they aren't as selfless as you
that's the thing
alot of companies arent doing it out of the goodness of their hearts
it's for tax write offs and PR
and people as well
no matter what the intention, at the end of the day it's going for a good cause so it's fine whatever your goals are
actually, we do have a team for newegg, forks made it
lmao
Damn 😭
Idk if id say selfless
Ofc
I guess yeah it still does help in the end
There's degrees to selflessness. Some will always put others first, others will only help when it's convenient. Both are fine.
I guess ill make a user just so i can track points lol
Would be nice to know how much ive helped
gah factory reset didnt work, i'll try reinstalling drivers next because what in the hell is going on
lmfao
Does anyone know if there is any kind of usb switch I can connect to my monitor and use it to switch between inputs? I have my work computer running thru the display port, and my secondary gaming PC running thru the HDMI port on the same monitor
KVM switch
there are USB only ones, or usb and display ones
Thank you I will look that up. Every google search has just been returning results for a usb to hdmi cable of some kind
USB only ones are considerably cheaper
if you have a large budget, the l1tech kvm switch is very good and supports displayport 1.4
USB 3.0 switcher 2 Computers Keyboard and Mouse Switch for Two Computers USB Switch USB-A3&USB-C1,USB kvm Switch 1 Keyboard 2 Computers Switch USB switches, with Desktop Controller and 2 USB Cables https://a.co/d/b1K9FEl
Something like this?
My work setup is 3 monitors and I use this one for outlook. For my gaming set up it will just be used for miscellaneous
yes, that could work
the display type is specifically for setup that want to use the same monitors for both (or more) computers
So it’s basically I run the displays thru that to the monitor and press the button to switch
Maybe not, it only has USB ports on the device
yeah the one you linked is just usb switching
Ok thanks I think I found what I need! Thank you again
so ive been having an issue with my desktop the past week where whenever i restart my PC and load into windows windows says i have an ethernet connection but as soon as i try to do anything that requires internet it doesnt work and it continues to not work until i unplug the cable and plug it back in any ideas?
Not a big networking guy but it soounds like maybe the port is going to sleep or being shutoff somehow
Try another cable, and also check for driver updates for the nic
I somewhat doubt it's the switch's port shutting off for some reason
yo can any1 help me i downloaded new nvida driver off geforce app and it restarted my pc and then it turned on and just gave me a black screen and ever time i restart it it gives me a black screen
try this, its a guide to start in safe mode, if you can get in, i would recommend running DDU, if you can get in with internet, if not open control panel and just uninstall the drivers, then reboot back into windows and you can install the drivers again https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000124344/how-to-boot-to-safe-mode-in-windows-10
blue screen of death, we did sfc in command there was a file corrupted was told to send this I did not see anything that says corrupted in cbs log do you want my friend to run sfc again
if only i could fold laundry this good
interesting
you have done way more work units than me but we have a similar amount of score lol
i wasnt logged in until the 3rd so this is from the last 2 days
It put me on like a rapid fire of mini tasks and then some larger ones
Dumb question here, but can't find the straight answer im looking for. If I have a prebuilt pc that came with windows 11 22h2 and I've upgraded all the way to 24h2, will doing a clean wipe and reinstalling windows keep me on 24h2 or revert me back?
It would put you in the version of windows that you made the installation media of
Hey @arctic verge so I bought a KVM switch to connect my two different machines to and that does work. However, when I swap it turns off the other monitors. I am sharing one monitor between 2 setups.
Work setup (2 monitors + the Shared) and gaming (1 monitor + the shared). Do I need to get a different switch? Or is there a setting?
Ok looks like my 2 non-shared work monitors stay on when I hit the switch to swap to my gaming set up. But my gaming monitor goes black
interesting
i'm not sure why that's happening
maybe because you switched inputs on the shared monitor?
Ahh I had Black Ops 6 up and that went black. Only that goes black
I wonder how I fix that because I usually have it up and play games between emails and meetings. But I just need my main gaming monitor going and not the secondary
if you're ok with single monitor, i'll probably keep the gaming pc with just the one monitor and no shared monitor
i have a suspicion that switching the inputs on the shared monitor is causing something to bug
might have been fine if the kvm switch also switched video inputs onboard, but i dont think it's worth it for your case
The only thing it messed up was the Black Ops 6 game. If i didn’t have that open, it left my gaming monitor alone but moved any windows I had on the second monitor over to the gaming one. It doesn’t do that on my work computer
I might try an adapter to plug it into the display port in the monitor instead of the HDMI
hello how can i fix this driver error otipcibus64.sys can anyone help me with this please
can anyone help me set up new pc please
I am trying to download windows 10 on new pc
I used this link and created the media tool
I got an error when installing to my usb drive
bad usb drive maybe try a different one
Too vague
or maybe try to format the USB drive and try again
Show us error
that's all the advice I can offer without the actual error
yep, running it again to show error
i cant upload pics?
error code 0x80070005-0xA001B
turn off antivirus
i did
ok
you have guide for it?
You basically just run the media creation tool again, but this time tell it to download an iso instead of installing. Then you load up rufus (from rufus.io) and tell it where the iso you downloaded is and what drive to install to. Super simple.
Ok thank you
so I logged into microsoft, my sync settings are off, but my new pc keeps creating "FDM Downloads" folder, which is a folder on my laptop. Why?
Sounds like either onedrive or an app that requires the folder
Deleted one drive already
I just started downloading apps.
The fdm folder is downloads using FreeDownloadManager, so weird
You might be able to switch the folder that app is saving things to so the folder doesn't get recreated
But I havent even downloaded freedownloadmanager on the new pc
Just old laptop has it
that certainly is interesting
Indeed
It’s a fresh os install too (on the pc) i didnt transfer or sync any files
What’s a good temp tracking app instead of hwinfo? Hwinfo is too cluttered for me
how is it cluttered?
you can collapse the sections you dont need
or even hide them completely
I just wanted an easy graph tbh
right click a value and click show graph
there's also an OSD for and such, but that also requires a little bit of setup
Now the FDM folder is the only issue that remains. I deleted it last night, powered on pc rn and it’s back again
Omg ik what it is
Firefox is auto creating it cus I just copied my firefox profile over
So it’s auto creating that folder cus that’s where I told it to save files to
💀
i have mine set to "ask every time"
so i can rename or save in different locations depending on the file
it was driving me crazy
Gay as hell
damn crazy how my appreciation to someone is considered gay
I appreciate you bro
Looking for a good free/cheap software to sync specific folders between my PC, laptop, and back up drive. Not cloud based. Any recommendations? Thanks!
turn off discord overlay
you could try syncthing (open source)
Thanks! I’ll check it out over the weekend!
Was wondering which program(s) you guys would recommend for stress testing a "new" system? I replaced the cpu, gpu, and RAM and enabled the DOCP profile in the BIOS, but just want to be sure it actually works under load.
prime95, 3dmark, cinebench, aida64, furmark, the applications you plan to use
Yeah my goto's are cinebench for cpu and 3dmark for gpu
anyone have any ideas why whenever i open a clip in movies and tv its just a black screen with audio? i have to go into task manager and close "photos" and then its fine. im at a loss
Try VLC media player, it's got much better compatibility with encoding types
My main PC has recently started turning on on its own from sleep mode. WoL is enabled and i have connected it w the alexa skill as well as the WoLon app on my phone. For some reason whenever i put it to sleep (usually during the night) i find it on the next day. it has happened at least 10 times, checking event viewer i notice it usually turns on a few minutes or hours after i put it into sleep. any clues?
i need wol to be able to use it remotely. the other 2 wol pcs in my network dont have this problem
im know im being paranoid but this pc seems to be doing things when im not using it for a while
Turn off wake on USB. I had that issue before and any little bump on the table or just the building vibrating a little would be enough to trip the mouse sensor and wake it up.
you mean in windows as well as bios?
iirc i removed everything usb wake related unless windows reinstalled the devices and the configs got lost
that might make sense when i close the door and it does vibrate the desk a bit
I have "somprued.co.in" generating obvious pop-up scams on my aunt's PC
malwarebytes
Not norton?
NO
Norton is so bad they had to make a separate tool to remove it, it becomes the virus
What about trend micro?
Most antivirus programs aren't going to be better than Windows Defender
There's only like 3 paid ones that beat it (and even then it's like 1% more detections)
And no free ones
Malwarebytes is a specialized tool for adware, spyware, pups, etc
AV covers mostly just viruses
😆
Wdym btw, is Nortan not a good antrivirus?
It's fine as an antivirus but it's everything else it comes with that's the problem, such as a crypto mining scam account, numerous popups for ads and useless notifications, and performance problems as it eats your system resources. I've also heard of Norton blocking Internet access completely after it had been uninstalled.
For most people there's zero reason to use anything other than defender + an occasional free malwarebytes scan
Oh and an adblocker / popup blocker
For a non-technnically-inclined person like an older family member, an adblocker will help a lot
Which windows 11 version has a virtual machine feature? One source says pro and another source says home.
Windows 10 calls it sandbox. What's it called for windows 11, if it does have a similar feature.
Sandboxing is more of an antivirus term, which is included in all versions (Defender). You might be thinking of the Hyper-V VM software, which is included in Pro and above. Unless you need that software specifically for some sort of business reason, it's not a good reason to pay extra for Pro.
windows sandbox (which runs on hyper-v) is a thing
it's only on pro afaik
What is one?
If not a virtual environment then what ARE the good reasons for someone mostly casual to have a pro version?
Ah it's a feature within hyper-v. They really need another name for that to avoid confusion like this.
- You run a Windows Server Domain environment and need seamless integration of everything
- You are importing images from someone else already using Hyper-V and don't know how to convert them
Fair
The only other reason for getting Pro would be Bitlocker, but there's free alternatives for that too that arguably work better and more secure without the TPM requirement
Also I would like to point out that VMware workstation is free for personal use after Broadcom acquired it
Which I never thought Broadcom would do after they acquired it
But VMware workstation works way better than hyper-v imo
alright. thanks, ill look into that
I updated to 24H2 not knowing how awful it is, and my case + CPU fans are constantly running at max speed even though my temps are below 40c idle for both my GPU and CPU with very little utilization going on. It seems to just be completely ignoring the fan curves I set in my BIOS, so I got annoyed & I started reading things and apparently this is kind of a common issue with this version?
I'm not sure what to do about it though. I saw one recommendation to roll back the update, which I seem to be able to do, but is there any risk in doing this? I've never had to do this before and don't want anything more screwy going on
Like it gives me this pop-up but I don't know what to really make of this? What apps and programs might I have to reinstall?
LIke is it gonna uninstall games lmao??? I have no idea how worried I should be about this warning
Rolling back windows updates hasn't uninstalled anything for me
Ok good to know, I was wondering bc of that warning if it might be similar to using system restore to return to prior windows states, where you lose any recent downloads, newly created/altered files or documents etc
oh yeah no not that
Might be whatever programs or stuff that it installed with the update
Oh that makes a lot more sense
Amazing, back on 23H2 now and my fans aren't tweaking the hell out anymore. Beautiful, peaceful silence has returned
Can I delay 24H2 indefinitely, or will it auto-install after this 5 week delay option lol
Because I'd love to hope it'll be fixed in 5 weeks, but it sounds like it's been absolutely cursed since it released in October lmao
I've been putting off the update without pausing them so
For now yeah you can
It'll never update if you make your PC technically incompatible with windows 11 by disabling TPM
I rolled back 24H2 because I was getting directX errors some games like cod and just straight up crashes in a couple other games
Yeah that'll be the anti cheat
It's a known issue, and Windows will even block the update if it detects easy anti cheat installed
Yeah Microsoft forced some Defender settings off because of it too
My bluetooth isnt working and ive watched a few vids to try and fix but im running into this issue when trying to change it from manual to automatic
cod doesnt use easy anti cheat, idk the name but its about less effective than a txt file that says "pls dont cheat"
your driver is probably borked will probably need a reinstall
I know, it was just a severe and common example of the same issue
Almost all of the (kernel level) anti cheats have some sort of inherent issue
i dont think i have any drivers in the first place
Is it like GPU drivers where i just need to search up and run?
it depends, what motherboard do you have/do you have a laptop?
Asrock B450
I have a asus wifi card in it
do you know which wifi card?
Asus AX3000
Experience Hyper Fast wireless speeds like never before with next-gen Wi-Fi 6 technology. With up to 2.7x faster speed than the previous Wi-Fi generation, The Asus pce-ax58bt transforms your PC with record breaking wireless speeds up to 2.4 Gbps. With ofdma and MU-MIMO technology, network efficie...
ah perfect one sec
you can use this
should auto detect the wifi/bt driver
Alright ill try it now
press download now install and then refresh the pagew
oh 😭 i thought it was an auto scan
it is but it cant gather what hardware youre running from a web page
huh weird
it should also pick up a bluetooth one
sometimes with those cards you need to connect a wire from your card to the usb 2.0 header or something for bt to work, was that done/has it come loose?
its an internal wire
connects to here on the card
then connects to a usb 2.0 header on your motherboard
should have came in the box if you still have it
hopefully that fixes things for you anyway
Probably not 😭 i bought this almost 3 years ago
Hopefully
i didnt even know it had bluetooth lol
i bought it for the WIFI aspect
Now that i have ethernet i just need it for the bluetooth
yeah id imagine that missing wire is the key
If i cant find one whats the name of each end?
Honestly no idea maybe someone might know if not I'd google something like cable for Bluetooth on wifi card or something
Alright thanks
@brittle heart Does it look like the pic pato put above? If so this is the cable - https://www.ebay.com/itm/225533592738
Yes that would be it
Thanks
anyone use mouse without borders? I just updated and now it's not working
I used to use it sometimes but it was janky at times
any alternatives? I can't ping between my PCs so maybe why
Not sure. I've been remote connection-ing to my laptop from my desktop for some tasks (I have a second monitor that the laptop virtual gets showed) on but that's a slightly different usecase
I use parsec and Google's quick share
I've been using quick share so much
Define "very urgent", we can't help much if we don't know the problem
my pc has shut off with no warning 3 times in the past 20 minutes
Any other symptoms? Going slower than usual etc?
no its just shut off
a few times
i already scanned with malware bytes, it said my pc was fine
but it happened again after that
That can be anything from overheating to a short circuit
Not likely to be a software issue for this
How are your CPU temps?
Hwinfo
how do i check that
With the hwinfo64 program ideally
annddd it just shut off again
……
we’re joking right
it’s not turning back on
Give it a few minutes, if it's heat related then it'll stay off until it cools down
my gpu is averaging 50 celsius
Also switch off the power supply, wait 10 seconds, and switch on again
That'll reset the power supply in case of short circuit or other protection tripping
Yeah that's fine
It doesn't shut off until after about 110
So if it's not heat that leaves power
weird but my mouse without borders works from one pc but not the other
that is, if I connect to laptop 1 I can move freely between both. but if I connect to laptop 2, I can't move to laptop 1.
Check admin perms maybe?
why does file transferring between devices still have to be so difficult in 2024?!?
especially windows.
connect to pcs together with an ethernet cable, easy... you just set up two thing and you're good
getting a folder to share files between the pcs? absolutely not. setup is rather unintuitive and stressful. will it ever work? hell nah
you could use google's quick share
though you do need a wifi card on the pc
or bluetooth?
tbh the main way i transfer files between pcs is via a usb nvme enclosure
LocalSend is great for airdrop-esqe file sharing between PCs on the same network
Though your issue sounds less like file sharing and more like folder/file syncing
OneDrive maybe?
depending on the size of the folder, onedrive isnt the best
tbh i prefer using a NAS for networked storage
OneDrive just sucks
Hate it
NAS works
Or using a public file share on your network
Gofile works if you have competent internet
I have to transfer files between two windows machines, possibly over the already existing Gigabit etherent (since it's well over 100GB of files) otherwise it takes forever.
it feels like file transferring technology for windows devices hasn't improved a bit in the last years
That's a major flaw in Windows itself. Everything else around it has drastically increased in speed.
I'm setting up a computer that I have to sell, i originally installed windows 10 in English US but now I changed the language to IT, display, input, format, region and everything else is set to italian/italy. however, some elements, apps, and settings still show up in english.
I'll run the oobe thing before the buyer receives the pc, but I'm not sure if this will fix the current language mix.
maybe I should test on a vm and see what happens
I got it mostly fixed from the control panel, and there are still a few system apps that kept the original name, not a big deal anymore. I'd really appreciate it if anyone knew a complete fix... other than reinstalling windows entirely
any idea what these two things could be that appear on my startup apps but I can't open file location of properties of either
You can probably get more details from a program like ccleaner, which can also be used to delete them
just got my hands on 1999 pc with some interesting hardware that has been there longer than I did
it initially had no hdd but I found it (likely its old original one) in a drawer, some days ago I checked it and I found windows 98 related stuff. I'm not familiar on how 98 is structured but got some files like boot screen logo and everything else that makes me think it might by a bootable drive.
I plug it in (set as master on its own primary ide cable), gets detected but gets stuck on ide-0.. ok
sure I have to change a few things in the bios but I don't think these older ones allowed to manually chose a bootloader/file
Did you set the jumper on the drive to primary master as well? Make sure that the drive structure matches what's on that screen exactly.
It's highly probable that the drive is bad too
I couldn't find the jumper for the hdd, but don't most hdds default as master when no jumper is used?
I would not assume anything of the sort
CMOS battery is likely dead as well
I guess I only encountered once a mb that wouldn't boot without a cmos
let's hope this is the 2nd time
anything here?
it started beeping nonstop so I restored bios defaults
still nothing
I went through all settings in the bios but it always hangs on searching for boot record ide-0.
so I guess it's either corrupted or somethings wrong with the boot things on the drive
I'll try booting something else tomorrow
Got a floppy? You might need one
Windows 98 CD's aren't bootable
Alternatively you can get an IDE/PATA to USB adapter and clone an installation
I have the usb to sata + sata to ide as well as the Floppy drive from the pc
I should have one empty 1.44 floppy
do I place the file in the floppy and set it as first boot option?
No you need to write the image, it's like an ISO
ok, then I boot from the Floppy and I'll be prompted with...?
does it give me a command line interface to manage the hdd?
uuuh... how do I write the image on the Floppy if I cannot get into windows on this machine
I thought the Floppy drive was ide but it's smaller...
I have other ide hdds, hopefully one boots and I can troubleshoot the win98 one
👍
What model is the PC? I'll see if I can find a compatible HDD image you can clone. Worst case I can make one for you, but that'll take a lot of work.
To use the boot floppy you'll at least need to be able to open the drive on a working PC to copy the files inside the image
Ooh you could use a DOS installation now that I think about it
Or a Linux distro designed for old PCs
@idle dragon You can burn this to a CD and try to boot from it. It's a 50MB distro meant to run on very old PCs. http://distro.ibiblio.org/damnsmall/release_candidate/dsl-4.11.rc2.iso
i think this is the best channel to ask this in, whenever im using my bluetooth earbuds and i hop on some games like forza 4, gta or others the audio completely stops as if they turned off, and it only affects my earbuds, if im playing with a controller the controller will stay on but my earbuds will stop completely until i get off the game, is there any way around to this?
Sounds like it's a simple audio routing issue. Make sure the buds are set as the default audio device in settings.
Dose anyone know any info on BTHPS3 Bluetooth Driver?
Why do you ask? What info are you trying to get?
I read that I can Connect my PS3 Controller to my PC thought Bluetooth an I have no clue on how to do it an that info said to get BTHPS3 Bluetooth Driver.
Steam has native support for the PS3 controller, and you can just have that running in the background to use it in other applications
If you prefer to do it the hard way, you can install these
https://github.com/ViGEm/BthPS3/releases
https://github.com/ViGEm/DsHidMini/releases
My Microsoft Surface Pro 6 Cant install Steam
You just need to switch the OS out of S mode to use regular installers
You'll need to do that for these drivers too
I dont have S Mode its in Regular Mode
Then it should work, no real reason for it not to
You don't even need ARM packages since it's a standard Intel processor
ARM?
I never heard of it
It's a different instruction set from x86, your phone probably uses it
they should be
Windows is always doing whatever it wants with audio devices so it's good to check and not assume
its in windows settings right
For example if my monitor goes to sleep it switches the audio device to my controller
to check which one's the default
Yeah settings
😭
yeah they were on default
i had to switch to my headset to play fh
There's also per app settings that can override the defaults too
im pretty sure forza doesnt have audio settings to select the outputs
You can find the per app setting under the volume mixer
let me connect them and check if it changes to the earbuds
it does change, spotify is playing on the background but i still cant hear anything
Weird, according to that there's no audio playing from forza
oh
thats because im tabbed out
it stops playing audio when i tab out
either way i cant hear it 😭
I just found a USB floppy drive. should I try with the .img file you gave me? or do you recommend the other solution with the dvd
Whichever route you want to go
Either use the floppy to boot a Windows 98 installer CD or install Linux instead
Thank You it work 100%.
I have fake virus popups on my aunt's computer. Malwarebytes free trial hasn't detected anything
I made a collage
Seems like a malicious edge extension
Go to this address in edge:
edge://settings/resetProfileSettings
It might even just be a site that somehow had popups turned on
cause they're all showing as from somprued.co.in
Go to
edge://settings/content/notificationsin the address bar and disable Ask before sending (recommended). If there are any entries in the Allow section, click on the ⋯ menu and select Remove for each one.
https://www.reddit.com/r/antivirus/comments/vk4zy5/is_this_malware_or_a_virus_i_keep_getting_these/
We got rid of them by turning on Block potentially unwanted apps
in Edge
But perhaps it's like Fal'Cie says, a malicious extension, and that is only suppressing the problem instead of removing it
I'd reccomend going through the edge extensions and seeing if any look sus. Also grab ublock if it isn't on already
There's issues with some games, specifically ones using easy anti cheat
It's a known issue and until it's resolved, Microsoft is blocking updates to 24H2 if it detects a problem game
I have easy anti cheat and a 13600k and have no issues with it although it was a pain in the ass to upgrade
I had to uninstall epic games launcher and then delete the EAC folder manually (because the uninstall doesn't do that) then upgrade to 24h2 then restore the eac folder from recycle bin
24H2 broke cod bo6 (and maybe other games) for me and I had to roll back
Mostly issues with games that have kernel level anti cheat yes
Microsoft is trying to stop companies from getting their hooks into the kernel because, surprise, it's a security issue when multiple programs have access to the deepest parts of the system
Is there a Site that I can get Windows 7 Updates. I cant Find my Internet cord for a Laptop that I just got done Fixing for my Mom
Windows update should still be working, so all you probably need is the wifi driver. You can get that from the manufacturer site.
I tryed that an Hour ago an they dont have anything for the Laptop
What's the laptop model? I'll give it a go
ACER ASPIRE: 7741
S/N: LXPXA020980490001E2000
SNID: 04900310220
MODEL: MS2309
32 bit or 64 bit windows
Download the latest drivers for your Acer Aspire 7741 to keep your Computer up-to-date.
64 bit
Select windows 7 64 bit from the drop down and scroll down to "network and wireless"
adblock highly recommended
All 3 Correct?
Ok Thank you very much for the Help. Im getting the 1st 2 right now on a USB an then get it on the Laptop.
If that wireless driver doesn't work then there's a different one listed under the windows 7 32 bit page. It looks the same but links to a different file.
That one also says it's compatible with both 32 and 64 bit
Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter ( For 32 & For 64 bit ) failed.
by chance would anyone know why my pc keeps crashing in marvel rivals bc it says i need 10gb of ram, but i have 32 gb and around 22 is being used while playing then crashes and says i need 10?. Does it mean I need like 10 extra gb of free ram or something like that?
That would be 10GB of video memory, as in on the GPU
Turn down your texture detail settings
i have a 3090 tho
and the game would crash when id run all ultra settings at 1080p
Oh.
Would you happen to have an i9 processor?
and also when id have an onshape tab open, but it should be fine tho since that doesnt use much processing power besides ram when idle
i7 10700k
Oh phew
It was starting to sound like the intel instability issue
Because that's an unreal 5 game
DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) Guide by Pato
https://github.com/NeweggTechie/Graphics-cards/wiki/How-to-use-DDU
thanks
Looks like only the latest version of the nvidia driver from dec. 5 has the optimizations for that game too
So my second usual suggestion of using an older driver version is out
And here it is in case you need it https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/results/237719/
it seems whenever i close my onshape tabs the crashing issue goes away
its really weird tho
but when i run onshape on microsoft edge it seems fine
I'll Download them Right now on a Flash Drive an see if it work's when I get home from work tonight
Thank you it work.
yay got dark mode on tiny11
Greetings, I'm finally assembling my new PC build and I fully intend to dual boot Linux Mint and Windows 11. I plan to move all my work and utility stuff to Linux and just keep Windows on the side for video games and perhaps the odd piece of software that I can't get working in Linux.
I've played around a little with Linux Mint on some old laptops, and I'm debating how to actually execute the dual boot. I'm not sure whether I should use the grub boot loader or just configure it to default to the BIOS boot menu and select my appropriate disk from there.
I will be running several storage devices (Two NVME drives, one SATA SSD, and possibly a large HDD or two) with Windows and Linux having separate ones all to themselves and I further plan to give Windows a separate partition on its drive so I don't have to wipe out hundreds of installed games in the event I need to reinstall the OS.
If it's possible, I'm also curious about configuring one of the HDDs to be readable by both Windows and Linux and possibly storing games that can be accessible by both OS'es on it, but I don't know how feasible that is as I'm still very much a novice with Linux.
if you use a format like exfat instead of ntfs for your drives (except for the Windows partition) it could be readable by both OS' for games, files etc
but that requires formatting the drive if it is already ntfs and wiping all data in the process
You should use grub
Do note that you may need to fix it occasionally due to windows updates sometimes causing issues, but grub is the preferred method
Linux might be able to access NTFS drives
You might need to install a package to do so though
Why Grub and if I'm going that route which OS should I install first? With the laptops I only experimented with installing Linux after Windows.
Order shouldn't really matter? I'm not 100% sure since I don't dual boot
Grub is the preferred method usually from what I've seen at least
Not sure about the reasons why or why not you should use grub, but pretty much every dual boot setup I've seen used grub for boot selection
I'm going to put Windows on a 4TB NVME. How big of a partition should I give the OS? I intend for that partition to be dedicated exclusively to windows.
Cool. I expect this will be a learning experience as I learn better how to use Linux and manage a multi-boot. I'm going to all the trouble because I'm sick of the invasiveness of Windows, but I don't want to give up the ability to still enjoy AAA games that use modern anti-cheat and such.
Gaming has definitely gotten better on linux in recent years
It's only going to get better now that Steam is allowing more devices to ship with SteamOS
why does my activate windows watermark sometimes disappear then reappear in a bold font then when i move it goes back to normal?
Microsoft wants to annoy you into buying it
damn
If it's annoying enough I have a few options for you if you want me to DM you
yea if you dont mind
I know you typed in a lot earlier, but you'll want to put it here so that way people know what the issue is.
I FIXED IT
thanks tho
idk what the issue was
i changed its to 2133MHz
and after a couple of restarts it let me in
then i risked 3600MHz again, and it just worked
idk how it got fixed but yeah...
I missed the memo about saving wordpad files before the update, now I have a bunch of bricked .rtf files on my desktop. What now?
Install libreoffice, it's free
Download free office suite for Windows, macOS and Linux. Microsoft compatible, based on OpenOffice, and updated regularly.
Windows 11 backs up your settings to your microsoft account and automatically sets them again when you sign in after a reset
Pretty sure 10 does too now
Is it Safe to Disable or Uninstall Internet Explorer?
On which version of Windows? Generally speaking no, not without making a ton of other modifications
Windows 11
File explorer depends on that to be able to open your local files
You can easily brick your windows installation if you did it wrong
What file explorer really is, is a mini webpage with custom formatting
I think your getting the 2 mix up
they likely didnt see your edited message
you kinda gotta mention that
The OG wasnt about File Explorer at all I for got to add in Uninstall.
ah i gotcha
also the period is menacing.
i swear when people use a period on discord it adds like an intimidation layer
I know it wasn't originally about file explorer, the point is the 2 cannot be easily separated
Disable or uninstall internet explorer, and file explorer stops working unless you take an additional 10 steps that are easy to screw up
I'll just take my Microsoft Surface Pro 6 in to Best Buy an have em do it
Internet Explorer is Dead an Gone an it was replace by Microsoft Edeg
Correct, but elements of it are still used throughout the operating system, including within edge (it retains a "run in internet explorer" mode last I checked)
i found out why my fans were acting strange in the drivers (i think)
it seems to have been from fan control and adrenaline trying to take over than fan speed
context
After playing marvel rivals and crashing in 10 minutes in-game my pc is bugging out. It feels very laggy after restarting and cpu utilization is at 100% with just wallpaper engine running which normaly below 5%
What should I do?
Check task manager
Just tried reenable my gpu in device manager and got this

DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) Guide by Pato
https://github.com/NeweggTechie/Graphics-cards/wiki/How-to-use-DDU
Anyone got an optimisation guide for fresh windows anywhere? Just a site or vid would be appreciated, thank you
What are you optimizing for? Generally just debloating using the script in the pins is enough, and if you're gaming make sure to leave the Xbox related apps intact for game mode, core parking, and thread assignment to work correctly when gaming. If you need a little more out of it, you can disable some of the security features like core isolation memory integrity. I shouldn't have to say this can be risky.
Optimising for Fortnite. Yep used the script in the pins but didn’t change anything for performance. Will try disabling some security features now. Do you know if there’s a script for some more advanced tweaks for performance such as power mode etc?
Was just told everything I need for optimising can be found in this server, that’s why I’m asking
There's no script because there's no "one size fits all" solution. You can try following this guide, though. It's tailored for Fortnite in particular. https://www.reddit.com/r/FortNiteBR/comments/162qi0i/the_ultimate_optimization_guide_for_fortnite/
ill keep asking a thousands questions here from what i left off in #storage-devices
I'd like to get 95osr2.5, 98se, 2000pro and XPproSP3 to work on the thinkpad r40, using multiboot on the same hdd (possibly w grb4dos).
I successfully installed 98 and xp individually, but they lack all basic drivers.
my idea is I can start over, get each installation to work with as many drivers and components as possible. then I image the installation, save it on a different pc, then clean the hdd and prepare to repeat this 3 more times for the remaining operating systems.
after all that I'll partition the thinkpad drive properly and deploy each imaged os back to it
any chance something like this will work? it is certainly easier than having to deal with all the drive letters and broken bootloaders
As long as you keep in mind the 4 partition limit yeah that could work. That can be one for the bootloader and 3 operating systems per disk max.
grub4dos doesn't require it's own partition, it overwrites the bootloader inside the MBR (in this case windows bootmanager). grldr and menu.lst can -probably should- be stored in win95 fat32 partition.
all of this doesn't count as a "partition" but it's just the first 512bytes of the disk iirc
which means I can have 4 partitions for the OSs
this is a list of the drivers that win95 asks you to include during custom install. i previously selected them all which was a clear mistake
the thinkpad r40 ended up having some conflicts with the drivers and not boot up in normal mode as i already said
you got any recommendations on what basic drivers i should include to get most things working?
nvm i think there are some serious problems with compatibility, it either hangs on the boot screen, "starting win95..." or other startup messages. I'll give osr2.0/.1 a try. I lost count of how many installs I made til now, more than 10 for sure
i got a bluescreen saying i needed to recover, then i needed to do something else and my screen turned off, so i hit ctrl to turn it back on and it acted like it was turning on again after being shut down and it worked fine
I’m trying to extend my C drive in Windows 11. I have an unallocated volume visible in disk manager I want to use, but the extend volume option on my C drive is still greyed out. How do I solve this?
So today I learned you can’t merge non-adjacent volumes in disk manager.
Yay.
not only disk manager, but it's just not possible
imagine a drive as being just like a really long strip of paper
also you cant extend partitions to the left either (easily) because of how it works
It’s using an NVME drive. What does it matter where stuff is physically in the cells as long as it is correctly indexed?
Physically yes it shouldn't matter, but logically it does on the software level
Sidebar, I gave Windows a ~250GB partition to itself with the remaining 1.5TB becoming disk E.
I caught myself wondering if programs, save data, and more would have enough room to grow in only 250GB. Hence trying to extend it.
In any case, the healthy recovery partition is in the way so it looks like I’m stuck unless I want to get rid of that too.
Game install directories will be pointed to E and other disks I haven’t plugged in yet
So if the lovely coders at MS deigned to add the feature for solid state devices it wouldn’t be an issue?
They would have to rewrite the protocol they've been using since Windows XP
It’s that ingrained?
I see.
Do you have an opinion on the 250GB concern?
The real size turned out to be 243. I don’t quite understand why when I use the exact number of MB I want I don’t end up with the expected amount of GB.
Some third party tools claim to be able to merge non-adjacent volumes
One even suggested in a Windows forum thread
It's because Windows and the disk manufacturers can't agree on what a MB is
MiniTool Partition Wizard
Disk makers want 1MB=1000KB
Windows goes with the traditional definition of 1MB=1024KB
I thought everyone used the 1024KB definition…
So currently we call it 1 MiB=1024 KiB
MiB?
But Windows still calls it a MB even though they use the measurement for MiB
Mibibyte
Kibibyte
Gibibyte
etc
I think I’m getting a headache.
But the figure I got from the calculator wasn’t a round thousand
It was, supposedly, a multiple of 1024.
Which I input during installation.
Yes, again because Windows measures it as MiB but calls it MB
But the drive manufacturers redefined what a MB is so they can make it look like their drives are bigger
But I calculated in what should have been the MiB number
Unless I’m just horribly confused
Math was never my strong suit
Did you calculate each layer going down to the byte?
No
Otherwise you end up with 1024x1000x1000
Plus there will be a little bit of space that's reserved in the partition for the journal that tracks metadata
the last time i've seen a disk use 1024bytes per kb was like the old cf cards you see on those old ish digital cameras i think?
I searched for a GB to MB calculator, typed in 250 and entered the output without thinking. But if it used the manufacturer definition, it should still have been a round thousand, which it wasn’t.
Not that it’s that important at this point
huh
What about using Gparted to merge non-adjacent volumes?
Of course I won’t bother if it can be ascertained that C has enough space for the aforementioned
you could potentially use gparted to move the partition that is in the middle of where you want to extend, to the end of the LV/VG, and then extend the partition
That size partition should be fine for Windows
This works best with partitions that are empty or near empty so it doesn't have to move a lot of data. And if you move a boot partition or OS partition it may fail to boot.
I’ll be pointing games, and most software to directories on the E partition and other drives, but I know a lot of games save stuff to documents and other places in user and app data.
Honestly I just delete the recovery partition
Should I install Steam itself and such to the E partition?
Oh?
Any particular reason?
I keep boot USBs handy that have more functionality than the recovery mode does
i've never used it either tbh
if i ever needed to "fix" windows i reinstalled it fresh lol
Is my existing boot disk suitable for the same purpose?
Yes
Once you select the language on the first screen there's a link to go into recovery
Ah, well maybe I’ll follow suit then.
if it's large enough you can even use ventoy and put more useful tools onto it, and not just have windows recovery/installation
Ventoy?
It lets you boot straight from an iso file instead of using a burner program
And support multi boot
Super useful tbh
It never hurts to keep a few utilities handy like a gparted distro and the avira rescue disk
What about utility programs like Razer Synapse? Should I basically just install everything to my non-Windows partition?
Small stuff can go on the windows partition
Does Steam grow beyond its intial install size even if you point games to a different partition and directory?
honestly pretty much just don't store videos and games and videogames onto the windows partition
asides from steam client updates, no, everything is stored in the library directory it's installed in
maybe a few extra bytes at most
So discord, steam, gog galaxy, and similar utility/client applications can go there without worry?
yes
Although, now that I think of it, putting Steam and my other launchers on the E partition would simplify windows reinstallation as I wouldn't have to verify files for everything. Just make a new Steam shortcut.
My Steam installation is currently 1.51GB not including games
I don't call that small
I like how you think
it's modestly sized
250gb partition, say 50gb goes to windows, you'll still have enough space for 100 2gb programs, though while you don't want to fill the drive to 100%, you're also unlikely to have 100 2gb programs?
