Driving a hybrid of any type should not charge the battery unless desperately needed to be done. It should primarily be charged by regenerative breaking or if a plug in, by being plugged in on top of regen

Converting the energy from burning gas to electricity is very inefficient and wastes a lot of energy

Not to mention the inefficiency of just burning the gas for an ICE
