kinda, but then you have to consider that GB203 and AD103 also get like +10-15% with overclocks, so their tuning is pretty screwed up too. for me the upshot is this: if AMD wanted to they could probably release a 9070 xt + 20% card with existing Navi 48 if they provided a water cooling solution like they did with some reference Vegas and a few of the Furies. Nvidia on the other hand wouldn't be able to because they don't have the option to push voltage, since their cards don't scale. at that point you'd be looking at like a 500w 9070 xt vs a 300w 5080, and winning by maybe 10% stock to stock

my take on RDNA 4 is that it's a huge step in the right direction and is setting up something big. but this is the proof of concept that gets iterated on to perfection
they made the right changes to the shader, added extra registries for RT acceleration, massively boosted their wave and matrix acceleration, and overall just made a better more efficient memory subsystem. but such leaps and bounds came at the cost of worse space efficiency than would be optimal
i'm hoping RDNA 5 is where we see the kinks worked out and AMD goes full balls to the walls
i pointed this out a few times, but fascinatingly enough RDNA 3 is the most consistent scaling architecture in recent memory by die space effificiency (i looked as far back as Pascal/Vega). RDNA 4 seems to scale with die space worse, which is kinda wild to me
hopefully RDNA 5 fixes this and we get good scaling on the high and the low end

I don’t think they did it to cope, I think they were trying to continue forward despite the sram scaling phenomenon becoming more apparent. Everyone at that time was increasing cache sizes for their products

i was under the assumption it had to do with the desynced frontend and shader clocks, but when i modded my 7900 xt, HWinfo64 was reporting frontend-shader parity (possibly because it had borderline infinite power limit?), and as far as i can tell my IPC didn't improve significantly. results were pretty in line with what would be expected given the shader clock increase

does your board have bios flashback? if you want to be really too level opsec about it, best practice would be to reflash motherboard bios with everything disconnected, then boot into some secure OS on an otherwise untouched, known clean drive, bleachbit the cursed drives, and reinstall windows or whatever
ideally your secure OS would not allow read/writes from connected drives, and you can bleachbit from within a VM since you kinda need to access the drives to clean them up
