It runs on Linux, specifically based on arch for the most recent versions
Many games are made for windows specifically

Proton has less overhead or whatever compared to the translation layers for ARM/RISC processors running x86_64 programs, since you're still using an x86_64 cpu, but it's also still not natively supported

Honestly most games run on proton very well, but at the same time, alot of competitive games, while probably being able to run on proton, specifically stops you from running the game on Linux because "Linux users cheat"
