I just don’t get how the mapping works. I started seeing hdr being implemented in photo editing programs but can’t figure out how you’re supposed to use it properly.

its a little hard to explain, but essentially, you can think of SDR as being 1-100% brightness, HDR can go above 100% brightness, which allows you to utilize 1-100% as a lower brightness range in a scene, thus allowing a higher dynamic range scene

The difference between bright and dark is the dynamic range, so if your monitor can display 10-200 nits, thats not a very big dynamic range. But if you can extend that to 10-1000 nits, suddenly you can keep that original range for the tones displayed, but the sun can be 1000 nits instead of clipping at 200

we have brightness clipping in games to make things feel brighter than they are. where as HDR is the extension of that brightness. Where SDR clips at 100% white, HDR can go to 250% white, or even higher. That means in a normal scene you could have a huge difference between the darkest and lightest parts. Thats also why my screenshot above is so bright, because the parts in that image are over 100% brightness, and discord is capping at 100%, which makes it appear as fully white or clipped

Games like cyberpunk, for example, work extremely good with HDR, due to the general scenes being faily dark/moody, with exceptionally bright neon signs and lights. That means that the general parts of the scene can be that same 10-200 nits, but the highest highlights can be 1000 nits, which makes it feel way more real, since our eyes don't exactly clip

honestly, in a lot of cases contrast matters more for HDR than brightness does (to a certain point)

My main monitor limited to 250 nits looks higher dynamic range by a lot compared to my left monitor at 400 nits, cause the left one is an LCD and has really poor low contrast, while the 250 nit one is a QD OLED with significantly higher contrast/color luminance, and perfect black levels

On linux, sudo is run as root... which is even more extreme than running as admin on Windows. It gives full, entirely unrestricted access to the whole system. Given that drives get mounted in like /dev/*, this would likely wipe out any connected drives and not just your OS. Never do this.

personally I type out commands that involve sudo outside of the terminal then paste them in to avoid accidentally sending a command with a typo in it.

6000 series is still good. I plan on putting it in a future Intel build (using old Intel parts). Probably gonna upgrade the GPU though when Nvidia 50 series releases though and have a build that's better than my 7900X and 4070 Super build

I kinda want this Intel build to be my main build lol. It's like I'll have two main builds: 7900X x 4070 Super // 13700K x 6800 XT. So like, worst CPU and better GPU vs better CPU and worse GPU

"Why not just swap the CPU/mobo in your current build?" Lazy. Plus once I upgrade GPUs, this AMD build may potentially go to my gf given that she needs an upgrade (she's on a 12100F and RX 5700 rn. Would be quite a nice upgrade for her 💀)

I built her system for myself at first as an HTPC. I didn't use it much so I just gave it to her lol. It's not bad for her though. She lives alone and pays for her electricity bill so the lower-powered type of build is great for her
