m.2 ssd?
What cable do I use to connect my mobo to my hdd? Can someone send a pic of it @sour wadi
and yes
The m.2 slot should already have a screw for you
Also you use sata data cable
Then sata power cable from the psu
Sandisk.
Literally just hopping in this channel because my samsung evo 128gb is dead. Overheating, literally burning a hole in whatever it's inserted into and all the data on it is gone lmfao
Was literally gonna ask if there was anything I can do to get the data off it but I doubt it
Oh okey thank you
https://www.notebookcheck.net/SK-Hynix-announces-the-Platinum-P41-PCIe-NVMe-Gen-4-0-SSD.589665.0.html hynix also did a thing just for consumers
Scheduled to hit the market later this year alongside the existing Gold P31 and Gold S31 series, the Platinum P41 will be the first Gen 4.0 SSD with a 176-NAND layer by SK Hynix. Designed to fulfill the needs of gamers and content creators, it will be available in 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB versions.
I'm still waiting on a good 2TB for $100 or less lol, & not sata.
That's called a hard drive
At least $80ish/TB is darn good so far
ohh you mean less than 100 per tb?
thats been around for ages
you can get 150$ ish 2tb ssds
I didn't
Cool
Who will benefit with this speed ?
Servers it's not a consumer ssd
So pcie 5 is useless for consumer now ?
Atm nothing to really take use of it no
Seems we barely need pcie4 also, so far. Btw I'll do some 1tb mx500 sata vs sn550 tests in a week or so with new rig.
No real need to, the speeds are already known
i have a lengthy process question, so does anyone know how to get back access to an HDD from an external dock because of a bad windows update(Access Denied) ? plz dm me on that, ty
Linux can usually bypass anything short of hardware encryption pretty easily. Just use a boot usb
Storage for cameras: I want 128 GB of it, but i found this on amazon.
The PNY Elite-X Class 10 U3 V30 microSD Flash Memory Cards are the perfect solution by which to expand on-board memory of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, action cameras, drones, and more, allowing users to free up space to enjoy more digital content. The Elite-X microSD Flash Memory ...
I was planning on sandisk
But is this brand less reputable?
Hmm okay. But y’all haven’t heard any atrocious things about their storage?
pny is sandisk which is wd? man why do they have to be confusing
Afaik PNY is PNY and is not owned and does not own any other companies or brands
Anyone got any experience with these SSDs or heard anything bad about them? https://www.newegg.com/leven-2tb/p/1B0-016A-00002?Description=leven ssd&cm_re=leven_ssd-_-9SIAWA4DW44721-_-Product&quicklink=true
Looks like your standard sata drive. The company is from Taiwan, est. 1996.
an average ssd i guess
for 2tb ig it’s not bad
anyone have issues with the stability of new sabrent rocket M.2s?
similarly, has anyone had issues with using acronis to clone 1TB drives to 2TB?
I just bought a sabrent rocket 2TB and now I'm bluescreening so it looks like either I'm an idiot or the drive is bad.
When it bluescreens, it disappears off the boot list but comes back if I reboot after waiting a while. This made me think it's a heat thing but since when do ordinary M.2s have heat issues?
I'm gonna guess your copy of Windows was corrupted before or corrupted during the copy
Try running the bat file in pins of #windows-ios
If that doesn't work, use macrium reflect if you haven't deleted your install from the old drive, otherwise copy ant important files to your 1tb then reinstall windows
So @sour wadi, I don’t remember. Did we decide that 7200 RPM hard drives would last longer or SATA SSDs?
Meaning which one is most likely to die last? That’s the one I want.
Yeah like rawr said ssd best life unless you chia mine or something stupid to kill the nand
Plus hdds have that inherent vulnerability of their moving parts and not liking sudden jolts.
Modern ssd should be the longest life component in your system.
Plus magnets that will lose charge eventually
Oh yeah, ssds don't have a reliance on something like that huh. What's an actual life for hdds, 10-15 yrs? I guess that's when powered on. Keeping old hdds too long w/o using probably isn't smart
5 years on a shelf on average. Longer if you're lucky.
The bits will start to degrade and you'll lose data over time
After all, it's just stored by an electrical charge that will dissipate eventually
The real difference between hdd and ssd failures is you can usually see a hdd failure coming and backup your data. But ssd failure is usually just poof controller died. The nand life is so long by now it's a non-issue.
Interesting. Well good thing my current "game" hdd is actually my full old Win7 setup, but I'll still hook up & gleen through another old(er) hdd. 👍
And how many years is that?
Probably much longer than when we decide to buy any other component again 😅
Barring failure of the controller, you can't really measure it in years but instead in writes. I still have 99% life on my 256gb hp boot drive that has 20tb written.
Hmm.
Any average I can rely on?
Barring faulty controllers.
Varies widely by the drive and controller used but I've never seen a third gen or newer ssd reach 0% life
Third gen being roughly 2016 iirc
For what use and in what budget? I'd really just look at the tier list tbh
What size?
If in doubt wd blue is a decent bet
Also for reference my 2016 240gb sata hyperx-so kingston drive? was my only drive until may ish of 2021 and it's still at like 99% or so
Mx500 from crucial too us good shout
250GB mx500 is my boot right now (from when prices were much higher) & the lower write speed vs bigger drives seems mostly a nonissue. Tons of options, just a handful of models to avoid.
When did ssds get so expensive? I bought a p31 gold for 134 in September and now they’re like 250
Also. I need to find a good ssd (m.2 ) for my bros laptop I’m making him. Gonna be dual booting. I’d like 500 gigs but 250 might have to work. His budget for that is around 60 dollars.
Mainly because out of stock
A few days ago and it'd be like 135$, few days earlier and it was on sale for like 115$
For a decent boot drive, mp33 512gb should be around 50$
they didnt, you can get the 2tb p31 for like 235 or so
sn550 is 42$ atm for 500gb
That might be the sweet spot
um... so back to my storage issue, i can see the drive but now i cant move it to my other drive cause apparently the destination drive is under read only? I dunno how to linux
nevermind i got it. used a drive that didn't have any windows permissions
For 1TB it's certain drives when they're $85-95 like the Sabrent rocket or Hynix p31 🤘
@olive wadi thoughts on phison's new E26? Is it just going to be an overclocked E18 or will it actually be better?
idk sleeping
I like my p31. But yeah, that’s true
That said, controller failure doesn't necessarily mean data loss
Just tried to update firmware on my 2TB 980PRO and now BSOD! Trying to create a recovery drive from my fiancée’s laptop. Anyone else have issues with Samsung Magician?
Whenever I download something it maxes out my disk usage on my storage disk, and it's also loud as hell. Is that doing any damage to the hardware?
By that I mean that the activity rockets to 100% and stays there
I'm not used to loud disk drives so it makes me uneasy
(I think what's happening is that MSE is scanning it all in real-time)
Hdds are loud, they are spinning disks after all
At 5400 or 7200 rotations per minute so
OK, so it's not something that should be a concern long-term?
No
Thanks! I was worried it might be killing the life expectancy or something.
In like 6 months when Pcie 5 goes out
Supports only M.2 SATA SSDs when using an AMD Athlon™-series/ 7th Gen. A-series or Athlon™ X4 APU.
Just saw this in my mobo provider site for my specific mobo, my CPU is a ryzen5 3600X, is it compatible with the M.2?
Is the WD sn550 any good?
Yes I bought one. Good budget ssd for general use & the 500GB is only $43ish. If you spending $90+ for a 1TB, look into the Sabrent Rocket or Hynix P31.
Hynix P31 in general use beats some Pcie4 ssds
. Samsung 870 evo plus & a few others are good buys but I don't recall at the moment. Takes longer to check on phone.
I run the 870EVO Plus for my Windows and gaming side.
What are you hoping to do with it? SN550 1TB is what I run for my daily driving Linux OS, browsing and video editing.
I think I've seen the 1TB sabrent rocket for $85ish. If so, I'd for sure pick it over the SN550/sn570 tbh. Can check the pinned messages here for a big tier list., although B tier is plenty for most of us.
Storing games and basically all non OS things
I can't see the sabrent rocket for less than $150
U.S.? Prices sure vary anyways. If non-os ssd, then little point paying too much extra. Good to check pcpartpicker then see which better ssds are close in price to the sn550/570 etc, although these 2 are still 4 times faster than sata. That's just sequential. "Random" is usually priority
Reason: Bad word usage

2TB 2230 m.2 drive
Steam deck here we come
Introducing the 2400 SSD - built with the world's first 176-layer QLC NAND
Micron claims sequential r/w speeds of 4500/4000 MBps, we'll have to see how they do on random 4k
Indeed. See if it can even match the p31 in general day to day use.
It probably won't, that's not what it's for
Guess quite a few drives prioritize sequential and tbw or something.
It's a 2TB 2230, what do you think it's prioritizing?
The 33% better io & 24% less latency is a decent speel though. Will be good when we have some 2TB m2 ssds that are closer to $100 than $200.
I doubt that will happen anytime soon
I mean you can already get them for ~160 sometimes
Any real 2TB sata deals lately? Of course those would spank a hdd as usual.
Mp33 is the cheapest good ssd atm
You'd be surprised at how little difference there is between a cheap sata SSD and a good high quality HDD
That's disconcerting, most I'd do is clone an old os drive or 500+ GB of games. Actually the X300 Toshiba has had my eye for a while but not quite a priority.
There are faster
So I am not bashing NewEgg here, but what is up with the "Shell Shocker" not seeming like much of a deal at all
Good drive just not good deal, and it's just there cuz it's on sale
I thought Shell Shockers were supposed to be particularly interesting sales, rather than just on sale.
It's a grab bag of sales, usually they're pretty bland
Remember it's just a marketing term too
I must be susceptible to marketing
At just $120 for 1 TB, the ADATA XPG Atom 50 is one of the most affordable PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSDs out there. In our review we found that it still offers incredible performance that rivals Samsung 980 Pro and WD Black SN850 at much better pricing. Thermals are great, too, there's no throttling, no matter what you throw at the drive.
hhm.
dramless but uh
pog nand
quad channel + 2400mt/s nand speed controller
@olive wadi poggogrit + hmb
nvm inly 1600mbps
Off of Amazon I ordered two sn550s, but they sent me two crucial p2s. And they even changed the order history to say that’s what I ordered. I am positive I did not. And my mom and brother watched me order the sn550, I not crazy. Are they about the same? Or should I return them
Both are 500 gb
Definitely return, p2 is not good
Even if it was crucial p1 would be downgrade as sn550s have nicer rand perf
Eh, probably still gets beat by Hynix P31.
At least amazon returns aren't too bad.
I read conflicting sites, but it even said that the p2 had half the thw :(((
Yeah i guess
But I won’t be able to pay the discounted price anymore
i mean its useable but nothing compared to sn550 or p2, basically if not new and not on windshields list in pins its not good
Wait I’ll check if it is
it aint
Funny that they decided to rebrand Micron 176l as adata
seems like a fun controller tho
it doesn't
cope and seethe
p31 in general use does however beat a couple gen 4 drives. 🤘 High sequential is niche use or e-peen mostly
this might actually beat p31 btw
fun controller
Checking that link now. There no throttling part is definitely good, even if throttling is usually after like 100GB? Doubt I'd ever make these throttle.
hynix 176l nand perhaps
although haven't seen any data on that yet
cracked open my inland 480gb ssd
i got for $70 in 2018
sorting by lowest
it has dram!
im inpressed
wow talk about chip density, or lack of. Pretty neat though
Any numbers out on that mouse ssd yet?
lol i think its planar
Did you just rip off a couple things?
naw
oh duh.... sure is crazy vs a m.2 w/ only 1 "die" and the same capacity.
Is S10 a decent controller?
doesnt work that way
as in you think its planar because there's a high amount of chips
mx500 for example has a lot of packages on it, but it uses only 2 dies per package
i think its planar because the part number is quite close to some other planar nand
and the package style looks old
rather than the bga we know on newer nand
i wonder tho
could i update the firmware on the controller
oh nvm the nand is bics3 tlc 32L
even better
bics3 is 64L
bics2?
also that new adata ssd seems pretty similar to acer fa100
interestnig, new dramless innogrit controller
Adding a thought, lots of chips like that could theoretically give you much higher bandwidth
Sooo, Samsung 970 Evo Plus suddenly stopped working properly yesterday.
- Suddenly Unable To Update/Play Games I Had Stored On It
- Still showed up in my disk management/file explorer, but things would not delete off of it?
- Secure Wiped via Samsung Magician, Files are gone but unable to download anything to it
- Is it garbage?
I should add that for it a minute it was not showing up at all suddenly, but I powered off and drained any remaining power and then restarted and it came back
Try running chkdsk C: or whatever your drive letter for that is in cmd as admin
Friend wants an external hard drive for around 50 bucks, terabyte or more, any recommendations?
Are hdd still worth it?
If you want $15-25 per TB, yes. Not like most of us need our entire steam or "homework" collection on an ssd. Plus, ssd is often still 3-4x as expensive. Although, I don't suggesst an "external " hdd at all. Hdds don't like possible sudden movements.
Glance at this wD. Link is to the 2TB one but the TB is $45.

for bulk storage for cheap yeah, as long as theres still an SSD with the OS on it tho
Oh thanks
best internal m.2 for a budget build?
👍
Wdym, I need my “homework” to be able to be pulled up as fast as I can
What if my teacher is about to catch me playing games
Ah, reminds me of when I discovered the 2 computers on my high school campus that were not locked down. One was right in front of the librarian's desk so that's a no go, but the other was in the back room of the ROTC class so I installed Halo on that, got 3 of my senior classes to be that ROTC, and played Halo for 2 hours a day pretending to do homework. Good times.
Lmao
@olive wadi adata trying to say they won't swap controller and nand again
https://www.techpowerup.com/291025/adata-guarantees-consistent-xpg-atom-50-ssd-controller-and-nand-flash-combo
A disturbing trend among entry-level M.2 NVMe SSDs is a complete disregard from manufacturers for consistency in the brands and types of the various key components of the drives. The companies simply advertise a certain set of performance and endurance numbers, which serve as ends to reach by whatev...
no chad adata do not surrender to the redditors
Lol
Inb4 "Intel 64l is consistent in performance with micron 176l"
This is still amusing (I recently had to look up sata ssd info for someone). Curious, any idea what the real limit to the small sata connector could be if we had sata 4 or 5? I know there's other factors too perhaps, but
oversized sure, but smaller doesnt mean better
we have M.2 for space efficiency
and sata for something that is easily mounted into a case
also to answer your question, there is really no limit to how fast we could potentially push SATA
its just we have already replaced that protocol with the significantly more efficient NVMe protocol
so theres no reason for sata 4 or more
its just that NVMe is more expensive to implement in the same way that sata is implemented
U.2 has been around, but iirc U.2 cables are spensive, and the drives that use them are too
but as you have discovered, even our 4TB sata based drives hardly fill up the 2.5 in form factor, so whats the point of using U.2? imo it was DOA.
good budget 1tb ssd?
Mp33
Iirc you're in aus so sn550
Sn550 is a legit boot ssd option.
ok im back to the drawing board. I need 2 m.2 boot ssds for me and my brothers laptops. any cheap suggustions? or should i just dig through that tier list...
oh, and midwest US
rn im seeing mp33 as 42.99
does the mp33 have a dram cache??
Nah, but it has hmb, which makes it decent
is that the thing that makes it slower as it get fuller?
or is that the gimmicky cache thats part of the storage that i mthinking of
It stands for host memory bus
Uses your ram instead of onboard cache
Just a little slower to access basically
Bus or buffer, forgot exact name
I see. I looked it up. Do you know if it works in Linux?
Or do I need to research xD
It's not going to be a boot, unless it would be faster than the sn530 in my laptop at the moment
Do you know what would be faster?
Idk. SN570 is "faster" in sequential for example, but otherwise most nvme ssds are pretty close in general use. It's funny there's almost no point to spending over ~$135/ssd (1TB) unless really needing the higher sequential speeds from some of them.
So 2TB Gen 4 TLC nvme I'm not seeing anything below ~$180
below 180 would be surprising for that tbh
Did you mean gen 3? 2tb gen 4 tlc drive is going to set you back like 280$, drive with good nand is going to set you above 300$
I don't mean anything. I want all the things and I want them for an unreasonably low price.
okai
Any good budget ones I'm near a micro center
Hey friends. Bought a pre built pc for my son last year came with a 500g ssd . Looking to add storage. Can I add another ssd or do I need to replace. Can I keep my ssd and add a hhd?
You can add another ssd or hdd yes
I want it for saved videos if game play had is good correct . Ssd is better to install games
Ssds are faster at downloading games yeah but they do cost more so just keep that in mind 👍
Could check the hynix p31, there's sometimes sales
Thanks, i did order the mp33 already though. It should be fine
Mp33 nice
Skeptical on the HMB with Linux, but i read a thing that said it would work
Don't see why it wouldn't
Is it a thing in the bios or a thing in the OS
So I have a pny 500gig ssd I can add another size and brand and be ok ?
Thank you
Just make sure to partition correctly
Just skip the Samsung 980, sort of seems mediocre compared to other options.
*mediocre for the price bracket
It's still a great drive, just cheaper stuff can be just as good
if you do find a good sale on a samsung drive just go to a bestbuy if in us and have them price match 😉
980 is like a little above mp33 tier
So if it's just a little above mp33 pricing, go for it, but if it's 30$ more like it usually is, just don't
yeah I only ever find deals on 970s never 980s 🥲
oops
Lmao
Just realized the micron 2400 uses micron 176L QLC, not their 176L TLC, wonder how good it'll be
Makes sense considering how small it is but interesting still
Hopefully good, their advertised iops look pretty solid
Is the 970 evo worse than the 980?
970 evo plus is better than 980
That’s what I thought didn’t really read the previous messages
I want to replace the HDD in my HP 8440P with an SSD. Can someone confirm if the Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD available at Newegg is the correct form factor and will fit straight into the HP 8440P?
Yes it should be a standard sata 2.5" drive slot
Thanks. Any specific software you would recommend to connect as external in order to clone existing hdd
Macrium reflect is often recommended here. I like clonezilla but that's a TUI command line thing and not everyone is comfortable with that.
thanks. I'll look into Macrium.
I'll add that if the Hynix P31 was closer price, it would be my 1st pick. 🤘. Some "gen 4" ssds are also getting pretty well priced, but it's not really a factor in general use.
should i keep my hdd running longer (like 60 minutes of inactivity), or should i have it turn off at like 10 mins
google has many varied responses
(hdd in question is a seagate barracuda)
Laptop or not? On my desktop I picked never turn off. They idle/"park" themselves after a while anyways. I mean when not a boot drive.
just leave it idle after constantly writing for a bit in the case of smr drives
Depends on your use case. Longer times might be good if it's a media or storage drive for quicker response to random requests, shorter if it's a game drive.
does it affect drive life in any notable amounts
The motor gets more strain from spinning up than staying spinning. It's not much difference overall.
Can someone reco a good SSD for my build? I could prob get away with 500gig but could do 1tb if there's a solid option.
Mp33
What's the difference between these?
And how does this one compare? https://www.newegg.com/sabrent-rocket-nvme-1tb/p/0D9-001Y-00012
Mp33 non-pro is basically the cheapest while still good general usage, mp33 pro & sabrent rocket(or similar) mostly just give higher sequential speeds normal users won't notice. The 1TB $100-$130 market is very crowded
. Alternative to mp33 is WD's SN550 , depending on price. I got my 500GB for $44
Those 3 are all about the same price -- $79-$85
So it sounds like I should go with the Sabrent all things considered?
Probably. Could glance at the 970 evo plus or Hynix P31, better although more expensive. Pinned messages here has a huge ssd tier list. There's certain Gen 4 ssds that are good buys but I forget which. Pcie 4 mainly just "allows" higher sequential speeds.
For current prices I like the Sabrent or crucial p5 $99/1TB
Samsung ssds only worth it on sale
With that sabrent being $15 off that’s a steal IMO
Imo it's almost not worth paying much over $100ish per TB for any desktop ssd, lol. However, I'd love to have the P31, at least in a laptop because it's wattage is great also
Yup. That's what I was thinking.
p31 gold is redditor ssd
Oh, it's totally worth it depending on the use
is the sn550 the best budget 1tb ssd?
Yes
Actually no, p1 recently dropped price
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/pxKcCJ/crucial-p1-1tb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-ct1000p1ssd8
@olive wadi apparently there's a rocket 4 plus with b47r now, do you know if it's getting a new name or just will new rocket 4 plus stock have good nand
@sour wadi @hollow sphinx Should I buy a 2tb SN850 for $250?
I literally have it in my hands rn
no idea
decent price tbh
Nope, s70 blade 2tb is 250$ constantly so not worth imo
sn850 is better than the s70 so if they're the same price i mean
it's just s70 is typically so much cheaper
Fair
i just removed a partition (F:) from my disk (E:) and now there is only (E:) (obviously) but it shows only 70GB out of 150 total hdd space....
why?
H E L P
plz tag me when you reply
You need to go into disk management and expand the E drive to use the empty space
Hey where can I send an audio/video clip?
What I assume is my hard drive is super loud at times
Has been happening basically ever since I bought it
Extend volume?
Do i have to just click "next" with default settings
Do i have to change anything?
@blazing musk
That's the situation
right click E:
click expand
make sure you select all the space you have
On the left it says "base GB:150GB"
(E:) is 78gb (primary partition)
(F:) is 71gb
Do i have to change?
If I right click on F: it says remove partition
@pallid orchid
Maybe it will do something
there is no F: in the pic you sent
where you right clicking?
No, for some reason yesterday the green partition was called (F:)
Now it hasn't got any letter
send a screenshot of diskmgmt again
It's all Italian
Disk 1 is divided in two parts, I only want one (150gb)
If I go to "this PC" I can find only E: (from the HDD) with 78gb
It should be 150
All you should need to do is right click on drive E and select extend volume and see if it lets you add the unallocated space
It says it's "not supported"
Right click on the green partition >remove partition?
I just searched on Google, it told me to click "remove volume" now I can't see the disk
Perfect
Solved everything
Now i can see the full disk
150gb
hopefully there was no data on the drive
I had to reset it because it was full of locked files since it was some sort of client
So now I can reinstall win XP/7 and modify settings on the PC
I had to do it because it had an administrator account that couldnt be removed from the pc itself
you coulda stopped here if you wanted to reinstall tbh
I wasn't able to see the HDD from my computer, only disk management was able to recognise the disk
So I formatted it
Can I use an HDD with SATA adapter to install win 7 on a computer?
Instead of an usb pen
I don't have any usb pen for some reason...
(alternatives to install win 7 on the PC? Without using usb pen)
You could set up a network boot
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/configure-a-pxe-server-to-load-windows-pe
Okay, should I get my defective $42.99 mp33 replaced, or return it and buy a wd black sn750 for 7 more dollars? I can’t take advantage of pcie 4 at all, laptop is from 2017.
get the sn750
It’s worth it? And does it have a dram cache?
yeah its great
Nice
I reallllllly hope it doesn’t go off sale
Alright, packaged it up, did the amazong return form, now I gotta wait about an hour, then I drop it off at the ups store, (take the L fedex and knz), then I wait 2-4 hours for the money back, THEN I order the wd black sn750 and hope it’s still on sale
I returned a couple things last week & had refund within 2 hrs of dropping off. No kidding. 👍
If anyone is looking at $130ish gen 4 drives, 4 hrs for this price. Probably throttles quite a bit w/o heatsink though.
I still haven’t gotten it yet, but we just dropped it off about an hour ago
Alright. Amazong is dumb and is going to wait 3-5 days, and then 2-4 hours to give me the Amazon credit. So I went ahead and ordered the sn750 while it’s still on sale. With money. But the refund goes to my parents account, so they can use it and pay me. I wish i would have started this with wegg. It’s all cause the wegg sale ended like 4 hours before the Amazon one did 😔

Why gen4?
Ah, petty sure most gen 3 stuff won't be near a r/w of that Inland drive, and seemed like a good price at the time.
Nowadays how much storage is enough? I’m having second thoughts I have 1tb ssd, wondering if I should grab another one if I plan on using this computer for Atleast 5+ years
just add more it if you need more, its a very personal question too, 500gb is plenty for me tbh
Ok I guess I’ll get it when I see I need it later on, but I have a m.2, I just think if windows and lots of things stored on it first it may slow the operating system down if I decide later on to move things over to the new drive? Because from what I remember hearing you keep one for windows and games and applications in another drive? Unless things has changed now lol
Nah no need for that and you wouldn't have to move to new ssd just add it in and use for storage
my upcoming nuc board comes with an msata slot, problem is that said format is more expensive than standard m.2
i'm sticking with a 2.5" ssd
Can someone explain me the difference between every type of m.2 SSD
Nvme, SATA, PCIe,...
Nvme is pcie, sata is sata, same protocol as 2.5" ssds and as hard drives
Why everytime I download something, my ssd just freezes my computer, like it makes it super slow, and locks my mouse in place like I'm pretty sure even hdd don't freeze the entire pc
Are you sure it's SSD and not CPU that's slowing you down?
Maybe its my cpu
Idk
My cpu seems fine
Its a i7 10th gen F
Don't ask me for the numbers because I don't remember
When I get home I'll figure out my ssd brand
Cuz I feel like that's the issue
Gotta know model over the name of the brand of the SSD
Yeah sorry that's what I meant
Can't rn tho but when I get home I'll figure it out
My pc also slows down while updating or downloading (example: warzone) it's 350mb/s write and should be 400mb/s read
And it takes about one minute to react to mouse click
Yes, I know I have an horrible SSD
ion think thats an ssd problem
I feel like it is tho, I have no other cpu issues
He could be having the same problem as me
its the adata su720 1 terabyte
Cpu is intel core i7-10700F
don't know what to say about this
That's a pretty standard sata drive
yeah i'm fine with the speeds
its just that annoying freezing
whenever i download stuff
What's your memory speed at currently? You can post a Screenshot of cpu-z tab showing speeds and latencies
oh i don't have cpu z hold on
so u want the stuff on which tab?
well i can tell you my memory speed is like
if ur talking about ram
its a 2933 mhz
I believe it's the second tab, memory
You can try to overclock it if you're on B560, Z590, or Z490 motherboard
Nope, intel has that one locked
Nice
I like my pc
at least it games fine
I just can't do anything while i download stuff which sucks
Yeah, seems like you'll just have to deal with it for a while. The fastest memory you can have on B460 is 3200.
2933* with a i7/i9
2666 with i5/i3
yeah but heres the thing
Is it? That's below jedec spec even
Yes that's why b560 was NEEEDED
The cpu couldn't process the data as fast as the new one can
well it was 2nd gen i7
and sata ssd
no issues downloading at all
was able to hop on a single player game no problem
but I could think about getting different ram since my pc literally defines it as unknown
i checked the stick and it didn't even have a brand on it
at the time i didn't bother looking for a model number either
Yay sketchy oem sticks
so yeah
thats my problem
i guess?
i'm slowed down by my ram ur saying?
wait a minute
cpu z is picking up a module manuf. and dram manuf.
idk if that says something
What that says is your sticks are hynix ones rated at 3000 speed
But since you're limited to 2933 it's reduced the speed while still using the timings from the 3000 profile
soooo is that good or bad
It made a bad kit worse that way lol
Short of changing the motherboard, not really
great
so all this is telling me
is that i need a motherboard upgrade
and a cpu upgrade
yeah but i thought i can't run at 3000 with this cpu
Technically 10900k max is also 2933, but people run even 5000 on z590 with 10900k just fine
i'm sorry what
since when could you bring up the speed of ur ram even if its not listed on the cpu page
and this cpu isn't overclockable
If you want extreme, 6400 on a 10900k with z490
https://hwbot.org/submission/4454753_hicookie_memory_frequency_ddr4_sdram_3226.9_mhz
and ur telling me thats ddr4
Yes
basically always, the listed speed just means it has to do the listed speed at jedec timings or its fualty
Ddr5 records are 8000 iirc
bruh
Ddr4 record is currently 7200
okay well i guess i'm locked down by my motherboard
8888
9500 on hwbot atm
https://hwbot.org/submission/4923652_lupin_no_musume_memory_frequency_ddr5_sdram_4779.7_mhz
my motherboard won't cut it
8888 cl 88 88 88 iirc
flat 88's
And yea b460 chipset is holding you back from higher freq
nice
i can't upgrade at all
and if i'm gonna upgrade
i might as well just get other stuff too
like why just get a new motherboard, for one little issue
Then might as well wait for now, 12th gen looks real good right now, who knows how good 13th gen will be
yeah i'll wait
got no money
and prices are so bad right now on some things
So i guess i solved all my pc problems
Just saw this in my news feed after sending that link lmao
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/overclocker-closes-in-on-ddr5-10000-record
Thermal paste is cheap and simple
yeah it'll be fine
bad temps on cpu
sometimes 70s while gaming
kinda seems high
high 70s
so yeah thanks everyone for the help
70s isn't bad tbh but anyways, you're welcome
especially with what ddr5 will be in 2 years
could have 8000c20 as mainstream for all we know
is that overclocked ram
cuz if so wouldn't u need someway to also keep it cool'
cuz i'm pretty sure ram can overheat
Depends on die
B die is sensitive for OCs, keep it under like 50c to keep it stable, rev e doesn't care if it's 60c, it'll just keep going
That's just ddr4, but example
Tends to not matter unless you have a lot of ram running high freq
If you're trying to run 4x32 at 4000c16 or smth, you'll want to cool that
Or just b die OCing
more my dream ram
feel like i only want 32 gb
then just a good speed
is it better in quad channel?
Cuz i heard duel channel is fine
dual channel is better in a lot of cases i believe
I see
Keep in mind, quad channel only on hedt platforms
For consumer platforms, 4 sticks is still running dual channel
o
confusion
oh btw, zentimings shows ram die right?
like, micron samsung etc
It can only guess afaik
pato somehow knew my hp ram was micron die from zentimings
Like typhoon burner does
Nothing from the ram tells you actual die afaik, brand, maybe
i dont have that installed
i mean the manufacturer of the die
my laptop came with 1x8gb stick, want to just grab another one
Dunno if it'll tell you manufacturer
alr, ty
I'm new to this server and to PC's, so i apologize if this sounds dumb; I've recently built my PC less than a month ago and I'm looking into upgrading my storage as I've already used up a terabyte.
is buying an HDD for extra storage specifically for stuff lile videos and pictures or is there a way to put games and stuff on an HDD and run it on an SSD? or is that not how it works and I'm better off just buying another SSD? because I've heard that load times are faster on an SSD, so like do you put the files on the HDD and load it through the SSD for gaming?
no, they are separate. you can use an hdd to put games onto it but load times will perform how they will on that hdd. It's fine to put games on an hdd and play off of it depending on the titles you plan on playing, if its single player games, youll be fine for the most part but overall, yes an ssd would be better if you do want those faster load times
pricing of ssd's right now are pretty good and theres constant sales so theres really no harm in looking at those over an hdd
Just keep in mind hdd's/tb are roughly 4x more storage for the price
Hey all. What do you think would be faster for moving files around? A 5tb HDD in a usb 2.0 dock, Or a WD Elements 5tb portable hard drive connected usb 3.0 port
I think I know the answer. Just taking cost into consideration.
No question is dumb kyrex. Congrats on building your PC! Is it safe to say you currently have a 1 terrabyte HDD installed as your only storage right now?
Meaning windows and all your files and games are on one drive?
I currently have one M.2 SSD as my storage
ah, got it. so basically games that need the extra load times (like competitive games or other multi-player games) should be prioritized on the SSD while it's not really necessary for single player games?
Oh very nice! Nothing like an M.2 for size inside the case. You have some options. If Your motherboard has another M.2 slot you can get another drive and add Storage that way. It will be fast but more expensive. Second option would be 2.5 in SSD drive installed using a SATA cable. They have great speed compared to a full-size HDD but are still slower than the M.2, last option would be a HDD drive, bigger slower. But usually cheaper for more space
would the sn550 be the best ssd to get rn?
got it, thank you for clearing that up for me 🙂
The sn550 speeds are not bad. 2400 mbps read and 1750 for write for 500gb and higher. The 250 gb one write speed is only 950 Mbps
I’m looking at a Corsair MP600 and the WD SN 850 black. Those speeds are like 7000 mbps
but are they the cheap
Pergaps skip sata unless the ssd is an insale deal, or until you run out of m.2 slots. For a while now I've seen most for similar prices to average m.2 nvme drives. Sata is of course fine for hdds because that's what they are usually.
Not currently. For example, (USD price) sn550 or similar are sometimes $45ish 500gb or $90ish for TB while sn850 is $80+/$160ish, unless on sale.
What's going to work the best is shucking the drive and using it internally, but the usb 3.0 one is probably faster by a little bit. If it's a bunch of smaller files it won't matter, though.
Hey thanks! I’m in a smaller Dell prebuilt and the place where the factory HDD was, is now full of psu cables. lol external for me.
A lot of those usb hard disks won't have a standard sata connector, many have the usb bus right on the drive itself.
Yep. The USB 3.0 micro B. Sometimes referred to as the super speed one.
yep, usb 2.0 is quite a limiter (60MB/s), and that's just the theoretical max also afaik.
Usb 3.0
can you guys suggest me some device set ups for a photo editing PC
my friend only has about 5TB of storage 1 slow ssd and 4TB 5600rpm HDD but he's upgrading right now
He's got this from a bundle but he needs obviously more storage a few more TB to be sure
pls tag if you can in your response
What type of storage and how much more do they want?
What kinda budget?
He wants about 30+ tb of storage so def HDDs
budget lets just shoot for high mid range
I'd probably go with this
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/9gDJ7P/toshiba-14-tb-35-7200rpm-internal-hard-drive-mg07aca14te
sorry for asking but, is there also an ssd that you would recommend? given that its probably half the storage and twice the cost
He's concerned about the load times of photos since yknow one pic is like 60 mb+ and theres hundreds
Ssds that would add up to 30tb? That's gonna cost a lot but sure
You'd be looking at those
I personally think the ssd for photos is ridiculous. A hdd like pato linked could read 4 of those 60MB photos or more per second.
If it's for long term storage you'll want a raid array for redundancy to avoid corrupt files. Raid 5 minimum, 10 recommended.
thanks for the help, sorry I was a little busy and couldnt respond
I don't exactly know what he wants to do with it but knowing him he will probably just end up buying a few of the samsung SSDs because he says he's tired of waiting for pictures to load and whatvs
it might be off topic but i have a 250gb ssd as a 2nd drive for games but i calculated the size of the games and its 200 not 250 and yesterday it showed me it had alot of free space but today it shows i have 31mb left any solutions ?
nvm it fixed auto
Holy that 9mb/s seq sucks
Seq is sequencial read and write speeds, queue depth is basically how many things it's testing at once, threads is how many CPU threads. Rnd is random
Gonna guess your seq perf sucks because there's not much left empty in the drive
If you want to clear up some storage
Windows + R -> %temp% hit enter -> Cntrl + A -> Del -> Empty Recycle Bin
screw advertised metrics
I guess under 20% free really effects sata ssds perhaps? Who knows. I'll retest after I put a 80GB game on my 250GB ssd in a minute.
I do it almost every month
On "this pc" I always saw 110GB free
Exactly. SSDs store things differently than traditional storage. They don't Defrag like HDDs do, when old data is trimmed out it's just left as available space. When the drive gets more full, suddenly your "sequential" write test is scouring random parts of the disk looking for space.
Makes sense. I'm at 83% full now & will bench later. Definitely close to messing up my write speeds 😅
They don't defrag because they don't fragment ^^
Instead they trim/reallocate data because the NAND chips wear with writes, and it's better for them to spread out that wear
I have a relatively heavy steam/epic/origin library and i play a couple of different 30+ GB games often, my current 1Tb HDD is in the red in windows and I'm not touching my boot ssd, would you reccomend me to get a new 2tb+ ssd or a 4tb hdd for half price? I've never gamed from ssd so loading speeds and such are a non issue for me
id personally grab a 7200 rpm hard disk
I'm looking for Seagate and WD drives and none of the higher capacities are 7200rpm
Or should i just bite it and get a 2tb 7200?
get a 500 gb ssd and a 4 tb hdd
the 500 gb ssd can hold the current game of the month and they are cheap
I already have a boot ssd and I'm not gaming on that xD my boot times are already super fast and i don't want to destroy it
What country you in?
Personally, I have 2 2 tb ssd's as cache and 2 10 tb hdd's in a NAS
Also i don't really like to delete my games as i play them over and over so it'd be holding that same game for more than a year replaying it
look at toshiba drives
Best of both worlds but outside of budget for most people
x300 s are very nais
I personally have a 500gb ssd for boot and 4 salvage hard drives for games and stuffs
moving back and forth between a 500 gb ssd and a hdd doesn't take that long
MX but i also have a US pobox
i spent all of 0$ on my 4tb of hard drive storage
Okay lemme have a look
dammnn
Then I'd be buying a new ssd and a new hdd xD i don't have 400+ usd xD
look up shucking
new 500 gb ssd is like 70 ish and you can shuck a western digital external hdd for a bot over 200 when they are on sale
But aren't external hdds even more expensive? Because casing and whatever? Or did they get cheaper in the last couple of years?
Weirdly enough sometimes they are cheaper look into it on reddit
it's strange
I'd probably go with this
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/VFvbt6/toshiba-6-tb-35-7200rpm-internal-hard-drive-mg04aca600e
oh wow
toshiba is indeed cool
70? Noone should be spending that much on a 500gb ssd in 2022, save the money get a 45$ one or 1tb for 79¯_(ツ)_/¯
That's cheap af, i found one on amazon mx for about 100 usd, how much is it on the us?Western Digital 4TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBU6Y0040BBK-WESN
Sadly i can't use the us amazon app on my phone
I'm still pretty new to PC stuff and sometimes with more money than sense (100% disabled veteran)
Idk but the one i linked was the cheapest fast hard drive so
For sure, 85 fore 6TB is pretty good
Ah ok, then the "sale" is only for mx amazon xD thanks for the referral, I'll get it as soon as i can hahahaha
Np
I'm currently using my old salvaged 1tb hdd from my deceased laptop xD
I mean things are just priced differently in different countries so makes sense
I was deleting some games that I'd have to re-download because i know i will want to play them again hahaha
Hard drives handle "deleted" data the same way ssd's do - the file system marks it as empty space and simply writes over it when needed. But I think I get what you're saying, when SSD's write to a block, they have to write the whole block or more, even if the data element is much smaller.
Try Amazon
I got a 1tb for 46.
2nd hand or just cheap bad ssd
Um amazon brand new
So bad ssd then?
And it's hdd
So u reacted to a message which CLEARLY SAYS SSD with ehat u bought a hdd for
I have messed with a Chromebook to prefer a laptop that uses a real hdd
M8 wot
Reason: Bad word usage
Hard drive loses to ssd in every regard except price
Lol yeah whatever. It stores better and fragments data better. Least I also know how to find deals on eBay for a cheaper price that's not... Sh.. er crap.
SSDs doesn't get fragmented
What the heck are you talkin about
Also fragmentation is a bad thing
tbf it does
just doesnt matter because data is read and written differently
don have to spin up to the next part of the data
It does but an ssd reads and writes onto different blocks anyway
To prevent uneven nand wear
LoFabio's interesting 500GB ssd, then my 250GB MX500 at 48% & 83% used space. For a couple days I've tried Apex on the ssd instead of hdd and haven't noticed much of an improvement so far, plus after a few hours of playing eventually my game gets stuck at 2-5fps until I restart it. 80GB Apex & 25GB Back 4 Blood are the only 2 games on my ssd, for now.
lol
are you dumb
Fragmentation is only an issue on hard drives to begin with
And when it comes to data retention both SSDs & HDDs experience bitrot in different ways
"Stores better"
you realize the one you question, could be your own self. But hey thanks for clarifying your objective. I have been researching both recently. Shrugs Bing works better than google by the way.
"I have been researching both recently"
I'm very eager to hear any advantages you think HDDs have lmao
besides being cheaper
I told it on up. I'm not in the mood of retyping. Js.
You didn't provide any actual reasons.
Data fragmentation is a complete non-issue on SSDs
It's a problem on HDDs
"Stores data better" Isn't a real reason either since they both suffer from bitrot but also both for different reasons.
I have no problem with data fragmentation on HDDs. I do on my daughter's SSD. So, you're confused.
Define data fragmentation
And please tell me how you know that the SSD is suffering from it
rolls eyes own both and then try. You can learn, plus REsearching how each stores the data, etc. as another said ^ up there. I don't have to repeat them. if you can't read.
Reason: Bad word usage

Then how come others are saying the same things the ones above ^ are on facebook?
i must resist the urge to bring up how much storage i own
I have around 400TB of HDD storage and around 20-ish TB in solid state storage
Data fragmentation causing worse performance is the consequence of a HDDs mechanical movement, seek time, & platter surface area, an SSD inherits none of these attributes
chuckles And yet you haven't looked up what pcmag, etc. says in using for data sorting, etc.? Haven't found that you run out of room quicker on your ssds than you do your hdds?
using the exact same files on both
"Data sorting" Are you talking about garbage collection?
what's garbage to you - is other people's treasures.
this is an epic troll
you clearly collect a lot of things with that much data.
Thank you for clarifying who you are.

Do you have any idea what garbage collection is with SSDs?
No, a gigabyte is a gigabyte loll
I'd advise that this get dropped before it escalates more. Clearly neither of you can convince the other of anything.
I said same files on both, installing games, etc. You claim garbage, not me.
Garbage collection is a term for an SSD background function lmao
thank you Fal. I've been hinting at it to be dropped and the other read the older chats.
It describes how the SSD deals with physical space used by deleted data, covers stuff like TRIM
that's what garbage collection is lol
yawns I'm done, if the other can't read older conversations besides mine and wants to troll with useless buffer.
A gigabyte is a gigabyte
you haven't said a single correct thing in previous conversations about how either of these storage mediums work

And you haven't read the conversations from before mine either, troll more please.
Why can't the block work properly?
What do you mean?
On other sites, when one is blocked. neither can respond to each other. Except admins still get to see everything. It's same here in pms, but that's it.
Idk could be a discord bug
I've reported to them many times with no response. 😦
My SSDs would fill up quicker because I have 400TB in HDDs and 20TB in SSDs

I mean, afaik that's how discord was designed to work, if you block someone, they can't dm you, but they can still respond to you in public chats, you just see messages under "blocked messages"
@olive wadi seen any new info on the Hynix p41? I'm just waiting for Hynix 176l to obliterate everything else
no im not on the inside
Just in case newmaxx was talking about the 176l hynix nand somewhere
ive been out of the loop lately
ive been busy driving planes
Literally?
what job
im trying to get my night rating so i can actually get my commercial signed off lol
anyways its all very boring stuff
whats less boring is the schizophrenic ramblings of this bryn miller person

it's truly some top kek
Oh, getting your hours in?
you require night rating for commercial pilot license or you get gimped one i do not have a night rating so i am getting night rating
literally done everything else

Interesting
But well, that previous convo was... Interesting ig
not sure if elaborate troll or someones hitting the sauce too much
poes law really do be like that sometimes
I don't know, they might've just misunderstood
he is questioning you actually and he cant be you since ur you lol also bing loses to google any day of the week
LMAO
i had the .... privilege ... of talking to em too once
they got confused between ssd and hdd
chrome os worse than windows so all hardware in a chromebook worse
yes
ANY WHAT OF THE WEEK?!?
day
day
i typed day
Are you sure
yes
Sus
DuckDuckGo OP
Google does filter and sort results according to "relevancy", that's well documented.
There was a scary point where a friend and I IRL were talking face to face, and a brand of slot machine came up in the conversation. ONE HOUR LATER I got flooded with ads for that company that I'd never heard of and never searched for it or any competition before. The ONLY way they could have gotten that information was through selling my voice data.
Implying I'm citing google and not my folder of jedec documents & flash research papers
either way thinking that HDDs handle fragmentation better than an SSD is the best kekery ive read all week
And I accused you of trolling, not myself
you need to taily drive tails OS+tor browser
If only that was an option for my phone

I guess I could technically get a pixel phone and install kali
this interaction has inspired me to expand my ssd guide into the inner workings of flash
Ok whose telling this dude that opera isnt a search engine
Yeah that was the final nail in that coffin
Could have been many things but they're gone now, no place for that nonsense here.
ya
so i have a b450 MB, a mx500 sata m.2 and it doesnt get recognized in m.2-2 as windows tries doing the diagnose and repair but this sata m.2 works in m.2-1. I just got a teamgroup NVME mp33 Gen3 x 4 and I put it in my m.2-2 and my bios sees it but windows does not. I read that someone said it would work if I switched them but I got the windows trying to diagnose and repair again. So I put them back to how they were originally, what do I do?
windows doesnt see it because you need to initialise it
keep it in m.2-2
how do?
right click the windows button on ur taskbar
click disk management
send screenshot
Then what
ion rember all the prompts off the top of my head
it should hgive options and instructions on the screen
choose ntfs
btw are there 2 windows os drives in there
like 2 drives with windows
Uhhhh, it still says disk 2 is unallocated
screenshot
Right click the unallocated space and create a partition
since it does ask u what u want to set up on it
right click the black bar and hit create partition
You can just leave everything at defaults and hit next through the prompts
It'll automatically use all the space and format to NTFS
yes
You can change the label if you want but yeah
So it says new volume, blue bar, 1 tb basically. Is it all good to go and use?
Yep
what what was the last thing they sent
am curious
I'll dm it to you
np glad to help
one question, with the limits of those m.2 slots. is the sata m.2 or the nvme m.2 faster even though the nvme is limited in the m.2-2 spot?
nvme will always be faster
even though its limited in ability in that slot?
m.2 is a slot
thats all it is
sata vs nvme is the real difference
and nvme is a lot faster than sata
I know that, but the limits of the m.2 slots of the MB itself is what made me wonder. I appreciate the info
Chances are what they mean by "limited" on the second slot is that it's "only" gen 3 speed instead of gen 4, but that has no real world impact
steam isnt seeing the new drive 😦
need to add a library folder to it via steam
then u can put games there
how do
steam->settings->downloads
steam library folders
and then click the plus button on the screen that comes up
select ur drive
and ur off to the races
says it already has one but I cant transfer files
I found a loop, just fresh install to the drive and it seemed to figure it out. can transfer now
quick question, will ssds be able to read data from an hdd? i'm planning on buying an ssd for my computer, and i wasnt sure if i would have to transfer all my files over to the ssd or not
You will be able to
okay, so ssds can access files stored on an hdd?
You can transfer files from your HDD to a SDD and vice versa, if that is what you are asking
yeah, but if i were to leave all my files on an hdd, would my ssd be able to access said files, if they are not stored on the ssd?
Yes
okay, thanks!
Basically, HDD will read it, and tell the SSD the information, and then the SSD will write it down
