yes they're bad
There was a period of time after their immense popularity that people started dunking on it for its failure rate, but then it went back to being popular and untainted
that was 3tb
i dont trust 3tb from anyone basically
i just also dont trust anything from seagate
one of my friends just had 8 ironwolfs die on them
congrats
i regularly talk to people who have a lot of drives
i also have a lot of drives
based on the numbers from them we use only toshiba and hgst
so id try to buy toshiba when possible for your pc
Will keep that in mind for sure
thanks for the info
np!
exos are fine btw
we have a few dozen of those and not too many have failed
toshiba still better
p300s any good?
by toshiba
those seem to be the only toshiba drives I can buy locally
x300 prob best for general use
cant find those where I am
i dont like the p300 since it maxes out at a useless size lol
so like 2tb is the best it can do
id try to get x300 imported if possible almost
its that good
I see
I feel like the 3TB ones have been high failure rate for a lot longer than the 2TB lol
3tb is just wonk in general
i dont rly trust 3tb from anyone except maybe hitachi
and even then im wary
3Tb is a weird number in storage
game on
Quite slow, if you have a desktop just buy an internal, or shuck it
is there a concrete performance benefit to shucking?
i did it because i figured i wouldn't be moving the drive and having a drive somewhere it could get knocked around, disconnected, or otherwise in the way was not ideal
(that said, I have a drive doing basically bugger all while the other one isn't anywhere close to full, so i probably could have kept that one in the enclosure for its intended purpose of external backup)
Benefit? Not really, external drives normally just have a normal desktop drive that gets placed in somewhat of a shock resistant casing
yes
usb protocol is not good for moving lots of small files
so you will get iops benefit from sata vs usb
in terms of shucking a drive instead of using normal standalone hard drive was what I was talking about
Is the sata cable the correct name for the cord for harddrives ?
There's usually 2 cables, one for data, one for power for sata drives, both can be called sata cables.
This is the one for data
and this is the one for power
thanks
I shucked an external hard drive I had and it was one of my better ideas lmao
Speeds on the drive increased by a lot
Tis because usb is a lot slower than sata yee
And I got a dirt cheap 4Tb HDD out of it
Nice
You good?

Understandable have a great day
Yes.

So i took the hdd out of my mom's old laptop since she needs the files off of it and the laptop broke
But the connector is weird
Regular power connector it looks like but the info transfer cable is different, does anyone know the name of it and if I could find one to go to modern sata/anything that would plug into a modern pc?
The laptops like 11 years old
send pic
I can take another if you want, disc auto turns on flash for whatever reason
Unsure if the drive even works, its 11years old but it worked up until 2months ago when my mom dropped the pc, so its very possible it still works and she has some important files on it
I insisted that she backed it up onto a flash drive but here we are
was wonderinf if this would work https://www.amazon.com/SAIENTEE-Docking-Station-External-Enclosure/dp/B082F73H7Q/ref=sr_1_34?dchild=1&keywords=sata+1&qid=1625621959&sr=8-34

yeah I've never seen these vertical pin drive connectors
yeha my dad said old laptops use a weird connector
so im thinking ill need a specificed connector

doesnt look like any of those
it might be 3.5in ide?

nah don't think it's that one
GOT IT
there was a plastic thing on top of the regular sata
guy on r/computers helped
Yeah probably so they didn't need a cable for the laptop
was it just slotted into the motherboard
idk I feel like usually the cable-less ones still just use the normal sata connection, but the adapter looks like it would make it easier to avoid bending the sata connector
One sec I'll send a picture after I get this worked
oke
Oh that's unfortunate
My second sata port is covered by a cable
And the cable management is very tight
Think i managed to get it in
I'm worried the pc is taking forever to boot
might just be sniffing the drive to make sure it knows what it is
That was where it was plugged into
Or slotted into really
Not exactly plugged in
ah
yeah direct board connection
my grandma's hp has little mesh sleeved drive cables
Once I get the files off this thing it is getting the heck outta this pc
Not leaving that old of a drive in here. That's just waiting for an issue to happen
lol
Ticking time bomb thats the phrase
increasing ssd capacity via software :bean:
makes me think of downloading more ram lol
cant even believe this is an option tho... imma test it in cdm
yes
Update: I had to take it out bc I had to use my pc, I'm a dumb*** and destroyed the sata connector
LOVELY
Now my windows corrupted
funnily enough the second time thats happened in the last two weeks
0 wear leveling time to vibe

its cheap af so im guessing no
Just get a MP33 for $10 more
Or SN550
NVME is speeeeeed
Crucial mx500 is the same price, but if you have motherboard space/a few extra dollars mp33 or sn550 if it comes back in stock for 105 again, if not pilot d
Nah MX500 is the same price as SN550 rn
SN550 is like 10x better too
I am looking at a hard drive upgrade. Current drive is the Samsung 970 EVO 1TB PCIe 3.0. I am looking at either the Samsung 980 Pro, WD Black SN850, or the Seagate FireCuda 520. Which one is best for PCIe 4.0 performance?
What will you be using it for?
PCIe 4.0 is pretty much useless for most people
unless you have a very specific need, then we will need to see if you just need sustained perf or just really high burst seq for some reason, or efficiency, or you just need rnd perf
Mainly aiming for faster game loading and installation times
A new drive is not going to help much if any tbh, game loading doesn't get much faster with a drive upgrade, and installation times often depend much more on your download speeds, and a 970 evo is already a fairly fast drive in general.
grabbing some random loading time testing for example
You won’t notice any loading time differences between a 970 evo and a 980. Personally have used both and if there is a difference it’s milliseconds
Ohh nvm it was 90$ for a bit, only reason i said that was because they sent a 2.5" ssd and the sn550 is out of stock at the price of 105$
Hi, I currently have had a storage card that wasn’t the best so I bought a new 1 and was wondering how I can totally change my storage and everything including windows from that bar drive to the new 1 and just get rid of the old 1
Yeah but it’s in stock for $110
Ahh it was only in stock for 125 or something the other day
Marcium reflect
Good drive speed testing utility?
Preferably free but if it’s a few bucks that’s fine. Looking to compare read/write of my old drive vs new one
Bingo, thanks
Np :)
fio on linux, crystaldiskmark on windows
get the anime edition, it's better
hello, can someone pls explain to me
on the hdd why is there a plug with 4 prongs inside
next to the sata?
Molex power
I believe if your power supply doesn't have SATA power cables (dinosaur) you use the molex power INSTEAD
Yw
would bad sustained sequential performance be caused by the cache or nand?
Everything
Depends on the drive, it may have enough cache that'll be able to keep sustaining itself, and therefore sustained perf is still the perf of the slc cache or whatever it uses
If it runs out of cache, sustained perf will be down the the native nand
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/jZNp99/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd1000chtz Does anyone know about this drive? It seems really good for the price and fast asf
1000rpm stoopidd
yes
Says 10,000 kek
What i meant, shup
Have you seen the vid of that person who got an HDD to 21,000rpm?
sounds scary
yall remember SSHDs?
I wasn't but what makes it bad
enterprise used 2.5inch sas hdds for quicker bulk storage
A tiny bit ye
they're around as reliable as a barracuda kek
Less
seagate levels of drive fail
Barracuda is good though right?
Hard disk motor running at 22000 RPM on ESC. High and low speed performance improvements.I removed the guts from a 7200RPM 80GB Seagate Barracuda hard drive added a few extra platters and connected it to my BLDC board.
kek no
barracuda is usable for consumer
22,000 actually lol
I have a 2TB drive and it works fine so idk
barracuda is unusable for anyone who even remotely cares about their data
Just read the specs and make sure you don't get an SMR
all barracuda is smr above 2tb iirc
What about at 2tb?
i think 2tb is cmr but dont quote on that
I think there's a 4TB non-smr now, not sure though
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/mwrYcf/seagate-barracuda-computer-2-tb-35-7200rpm-internal-hard-drive-st2000dm008 Are you talking about this one?
That's the one I have
theres barracuda and barracuda pro
I have that one aswell
That one should be CMR
Good
i think pro cmr and normal smr
Bob disagrees
It's good enough for game storage
So who is wrong
I bet Lili is wrong again
It's not for backups
Which is what I mainly use it for
i have been wrong on here like
twice
both were weird linux software things
i would not trust seagate anything unless you're fine with redownloading everything in a year or 2 when the drive dies
I trust bob
I think MTBF on those is more like 4-5 years with constant use
for a while
that
that's what theyre rated for
sorry hit enter to quick
' and enter are next to each other
i had some barracuda die after like 6 months
yeah and i switch laptops multiple times a day and keyboard spacing is like
just different enough
is hell
They definitely aren't enterprise drives
i think bob and i can both agree to never store anything critical on a single spinning disk

no matterwho makes it
but your chances are best with non seagate stuff
except for WD 18tb golds dont buy those
i am not allowed to elaborate on that statement but do not buy them

Don't store anything critical on a single anything, except maybe a single tape
It's smr
*%50
im fine storing on good ssds
worst case they go read only
Too sensitive to discharge
but then again i never store anything on non arrays
😏
99.99% of my content can get nuked without me minding too much
like yeah if my DC gets bombed ill lose some stuff
Hamming code tapes ftw
i have a few horcruxes of important data tho
mostly as gimmick but i think its super neat
Alternatively have it in the arctic code vault
true but i cant put a lot of my files into arctic vault
Is fixed now
Oh, trust me, I've got some dumb code in there
This is in the vault
chicken
Indeed
🧢
reminds me of my old uptime guarantee
Decent uptime
I can’t for the life of me figure out where to click in Crystal Disk Mark to run a read/write test on a drive
It's pretty obvs afaik, make sure you're not in crystal disk info instead
I’ll check again this evening I suppose
I need a solid HDD for less than 100usd. (Storage device for clips and pictures) any recommendations?
Toshiba x300 4tb is like 100ish iirc
Or wd blue 2tb 128mb cache for a smaller drive
x300 is cute
I heard it's extremely noisy
Well hdds in general aren't exactly quiet, but it's a great drive soo bitta noise wont hurt
What do they even sound like
Like a hard drive
My case fans are sooo forking loud
There's two distinct noises that hard drives make, the platter spinning and the articulated read write head flickering back and forth
Some hard drives have louder clattering, some have louder spinning
If you're concerned about noise I'm sure going for a 5400rpm drive like wd blue would be better then or just pay for ssd kek
Honestly just having your boot drive not be a hard drive is enough for me
Drastically reduces disk usage on the platter drives not having to do core operating tasks
Might still spin up and clatter at idle because windows
But not really when you're using the computer
Until you use something on the drive ofc
Yeah, if you want pure silence just run cpu at 1ghz
Hgst?
WD Enterprise drive
Mounting it in my case with the grommets reduced the noise a lot but it's still running all the time booting off of it
Ohhh i schee
Egads. My 1TB Samsung 970 EVO is almost full. Oh, well. It is a good excuse to save up for a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe. Any recommendations?
I would just go pilot e 2tb
Gen 4 is a bit meh so far
Also diminishing returns
Especially for not boot drive
This would be a boot drive, partitioned for both boot and data
Why would you move your boot from your 970 evo?
970 EVO is almost full. It is 1TB
Yeah but why would you move os
What do you mean? I've always had a single drive for everything
@regal kraken you said your new drive would be for boot so you would have to move the os over
Yeah. New drive would be all in one, boot and data, the way I've always done it. But it would need to be a larger drive
Get a 2tb pilot e imo
I would say p31 but no 2tb
@regal kraken why would you get rid of the 970 tho? Just put in other m.2 slot
Realistically, if I do a multiple-drive setup, I'll use the old 500GB Samsung 970 EVO I have sitting around as the boot drive and just get a large-capacity 2.5" SSD for the data
not necessarily
hgst made consumer drives too
but nowadays wd uses them for their enterprise brands

Then why did you ask for a gen 4 lol
2.5 basically never worth
unless ur using thiccy capacity
i asked work to quote me on a 260tb storage server
Gaming
If I end up needing more space soon I'll probably end up with a 4tb hdd
My mobo only has two Satas and one extra spot for an nvme
Currently using one sata and an external 2tb
nvme expansion time
What board only has two SATA ports
my mom works at a smaller company and they have a 1tb hdd as their whole server, and as their company has expanded slowly and more ppl have joined, its getting slower and slower as multiple ppl trying to pull data off that one hdd simotaneously is kinda not too fast... Theyre thinking of upgrading so what would you personally suggest? they dont need like 16tb of storage anytime soon, so i was thinking a commercial grade ssd...
oh god
to hire me as a contractor before they lose everything
yeah ik
most stuff i think they have backups on but some is solely on hdd
idk i dont feel like spending that much on a good sized ssd
asrock b550m/ac
and im going to be replacing this mobo in like 3 years for ryzen 7000 series, bc ddr5
Sn550
was mostly meme tbh
get an x300 and ur set
not everything needs to be on ssd anyways
I’m looking for an external SSD that will be able to connect to a laptop via USB
Ty
Hi anyone familiar with old server hard drives?
Well, what about them?
I got a hdd, I think its a 68 pin SCSI.
I want to plug into my computer but I can't find the right combination of adapters/docks to that.
Actually, what I need to do is clone another matching drive, doesn't have to go through my computer.
Won't have to do that if you keep talking on here, mee6 bot levels you up and gives you link permission
Wow I'm genius
🙂

Anyways, I have an hdd like the bottom one is this photo and I am at a loss on how to clone it to an identical blank.
youll need an application such like acronis to clone drives
I have software but my rig is newer and uses SATA.
youll have to find a old hardware to connect it
Ugh thats OOOOLLLLD
also imagine cloning those old ass hdd, holy, it will probably take hours to clone it
Also, the drive is not coming out of a computer... not sure if I can even read it if I did get it hooked to a computer.
the rpm was super super slow
There might be some form of adapter out there on the market
It's coming out of an old ultrasound machine.
oh shoot
Cable to adapt it to USB or something
^^
Yeah, it has its own OS.
So that's why I'm here... I've been on ebay and talking with NewEgg... I'm not even sure what I'm looking for. On one level I think I need "68 Pin SCSI to SATA adapter." But I swear, it doesn't exist.
Anyone know how you access files on a drive that has a Windows install after you installed it on a new drive and still have both drives?
Trying to move some files over
When I click view properties it shows the user folder has nothing on it, and when I try to get into it it just loads to a certain amount and then gets stuck
Ah, nvm
I was able to do it by changing to owner to the account on the new drive
This might take a bit...
ah
needs an adapter to plug into a newer pc

I tried to post pics but I'm too new. I linked one with the Wikipedia article.
You should be able to send it in #build-pics still
someone find me nice hdd with at least more than 1tb storage not too expensive. just needs something for games, audio samples and project files. i too lazy to look
Wd blue 2tb 128mb cache version, or for 4tb toshiba x300
why the 128mb version specifically? also is there link I can't find for some reason lol
128mb version has cmr
@shut furnace sorry meant the 64mb version https://pcpartpicker.com/product/bskwrH/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd20ezrz
i get that all the time cause they blacklisted lililabs ip range kek
pcpp always makes me captcha
they made me captcha once but now nothing at all lol, gives me flashback to when google was asking me for captcha
i just going to try later, for whatever reason i can't seem to find the 64mb version on amazon, newegg, bb, etc
You can get it straight from WD
^^^
Perhaps you are botnet now
is the 3tb 64mb version the same internals or no, price difference is very little
I was wondering if this was a good deal and a reputable seller for this Samsung SSD 870 EVO 1 TB
Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM)
$72.49
sorry EVO 860 not 870 model version....
i already ordered from wd but is this just the same https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/974142-REG should i get here instead because i can get free 1-2 day shipping
number don't seem to match oh well
Wow rude
But I’m not going into this now and you cant talk if youve never actually been in the store
As i said we are not doing this now
It looks the same
need to find an external enclosure for a M.2 SSD drive - in this case a Samsung EVO NVME MZ-V7E500
Should do
Is the Western Digital Black P10 any good?
Yes but expensive
I can get 5TB for around $150. Is that reasonable?
Not bad yeah. It's a good external drive for sure.
$125 https://www.amazon.com/WD_Black-Drive-External-Compatible-WDBA2W0020BBK-WESN/dp/B07VNTFHD5?th=1
Amazon.com: WD_BLACK 5TB P10 Game Drive, Portable External Hard Drive HDD, Compatible with Playstation, Xbox, PC, & Mac - WDBA3A0050BBK-WESN: Computers & Accessories
If Micro Center has one in stock, I will get it from there. Otherwise, I'll buy one from Newegg
@blazing musk how well would it work as a Steam Library drive?
It's still a HDD so random I/O performance will be lacking. Load times will only be about what you'd expect from an internal HDD. If you want better load times out of it you want something like the P50 or another external SSD.
I can put up with slower loading times. It is having enough room for the games that I am more concerned with. 618GB for my Steam stuff, 101GB for the stuff I have through WINE, and another 78GB for my Dropbox folder.
Rookie numbers
I have 300gb in bo3 alone
618GB between ARK Survival Evolved, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Tropico 6, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Dungeons and Dragons Neverwinter, and X Rebirth.
Reasonably priced 2TB+ m.2? Quality and performance over price though
Pilot e 2tb
Not familiar with Mushkin. They legit?
Yep it's a v nice drive
I've got like 200gb in gmod, 300 in bo3, easily 100 in rando games, however much destiny 2 is, and prolly more but I'm not at my house atm so I can't check
brand doesn't matter for ssds so yes
Explain please
it's more about nand and controller
who is nand and controller
understand again?
they're not and
yall'n'sn't flash?
affirmative
i am the pee pee pee pee poo poo man
Rookie numbers 5Tb used for all my games, 16-17 Tb used for work files
Jesus, I'm close to 3tb for everything but I don't have work files lol
ok lol
I got the 4TB Western Digital Black P10. Moving my Steam library as per the instructions didn't go as planned, so in the morning I plan to reinstall everything.
looking for a nvme, sabrent2tb or wd 7502tb or samsung 970 evo plus 2tb or just get a 980 pro 1tb?
using a ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 PCIe 4.0 X4 Expansion Card Supports 4 NVMe M.2
If you're getting a 1tb sk hynix p31, if you're going 2tb pilot imo, although that could change depending on what your use case is
mainly gaming
but it also depends on the compatibility on the expansion card
as far it said gen3 and 4 are supported.
Both of those drives are gen 3, gen 4 is a bit useless atm, might be better in the future but good drives like p31 will beat gen 4 drives
Yeah then sk hynix p31 for 1tb, pilot e for 2tb
V nice drive
Well sk if 1tb, pilot e if 2tb, sk is a better drive but not available in 2tb format
have you used both of these nvmes?
No but they are still very good drives, the p31 is too high end for me, idrc bout my storage as long as it's ssd, pilot e isn't available for a good price in eu soo
right, guess il get the p31 first
@sour wadi I decided to go with the P10 first. I also adjusted my plans slightly. Next "upgrade" after this won't be the case, but instead a bigger desk.
Okay 👍
Once I get the 5000D Airflow, then I plan to run all my stuff on internal drives, but with the data split into separate drives.
What's classed as good price per TB at the moment? Preferably in pound sterling if possible
For ssd, sn550 500gb but especially 1tb, for hdd you should be able to find a wd blue 2tb hdd for 45-50£
I'm looking at external drives specifically for shucking. Like a wd elements drive. 16TB kind of thing
Ahh right wasn't too sure, I'd filter and see what the selection is like on https://uk.pcpartpicker.com
I know specifically what I'm looking for. I just didn't know what the price per TB was these days because it's a little all over the place
Ahh well usually the value per tb will hit imo 4tb per drive and then decrease back off but i don't look at 16tb drives so mb they are better value still
I feel like we aren't understanding each other very well.
I remember about a year ago or something the best value for external drives was something like £14-£16 per 1TB. I know that isn't the case now because of recent market changes but was wondering what the average is right now for if something was a "good deal"
I see https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/products/internal-hard-drive/#sort=ppgb&page=1 should be able to tell you, sort by price/gb ascending
Hey all,
Looking to replace this Adaptec PITA card from my supermicro 6026 chassis. I need an HBA for my storage server, and I'm coming up with a lot of differing opinions. It seems like the Broadcom 9400 series is the way to go. I am looking for maximum read/write for 12 drives.
Adaptec is currently a bottleneck for IO and keeps crashing my server when I overload it with large file transfers (Pretty much anything >5GB)
Any confirmations or other suggestions?
EDIT: Would it be better to run more than one card for 12 drives? Should I utilize the Supermicro SAS Controller? I would still need to use more slots but that might be a good balance of IO
@sour wadi finally got my Steam games installed on the P10. Over 680GB across 12 games. Better than 680GB across 7 games like before. Loading times aren't really all that different once the games have gone through their first-run updates and all.
Nice
@indigo arch not sure if it's the same for UK, but for the US, it's more like 17$/TB is good, and 15$/TB is ideal, although all the drive prices are wacky...
For the US, there's this tool: https://shucks.top/
I have seen a deal for a 16TB external drive which works out to be around £17 per TB which seemed like it was good in this current state of market
Drive prices have all gone up since chia became a thing
Yea
Yeahhhh so i heard
how do I change the default for what my games install to because I don’t want them on my m.2
It's a setting in the game launcher, game destination or something
It's a setting for each individual launcher or place you install from
I tried creating a new library folder or whatever on steam for my hard drive but it says it can’t use it
For steam?
yeah
New Steam library folder can’t be the drive root
Oh you just have to make a new folder for the steam library folder
yeah but it’s not letting me idk how
say you're in your d drive in file manager, right click, new folder
that’s it?
Then you should be able to go back into steam yeah
I just got a 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD and want to use that instead of my old slow ass HDD, what's my best method of transferring everything over so the old one becomes overflow (if necessary) and the new is what everything is run into off?
One slow drive to another. That's like trading a Geo Metro for a Smart ForTwo
The old drive is a 500GB from a like 2013 iBuyPower prebuilt, I think I got an upgrade
5400rpm or 7200rpm?
I can't remember it's an old WD Blue
5400 was the old one
Blues of old were WD's "eco" drives. 5400rpms so they used less power, and so were slower, but generally had a longer MTBF due to being originally marketed as server or workstation drives. The Barracudas were a bit faster due to being 7200rpms in most cases and were generally considered mainstream desktop PC general purpose hard drives. Then you had "high performance" drives like the 10,000rpm WD Raptors which I swear sometimes seemed like they were shaking themselves to death.
Reminds me of the times of washing machine sized hard drives that were only 50 megabytes and if spun up to full speed would literally rattle themselves to pieces
pilot-E is worse than the p31 gold
silicon power a80 is like 102 in the states rn
@olive wadi btw, know anything about p34a80 changing controller from e12?
its sm2262 and some weird chinese nand now
still mid end probably lol
Hm
might still be bics3 idfk lol
Btw keep in mind there's the kinda poopy p32a80
That's also called a80
But p34a80 is p34a80
lol i didnt even know that kek
i
:)
Ah, yes
Yeah
100% real, it says right there. Don't you have any faith in these sellers any more? smh
bruh this man straight up didnt even try to match the tilt of "2TB" with the rest of the text lmao

LMFAO YEP
I don't even have faith in pnys geforce cards XD let alone 2Tb*4pcs 100mb/s just pay shipping
10+ ppl bougth LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Could someone recommend an enclosure for a 3.5 HDD with an eSATA port?
you guys have faith in PNY in some capacity?
I've heard they do decent quadro cards but i dont lol
I might get a refurb 250GB WD Blue 3D
would be nice to have flash storage in this thing
then when I can, use the one I have at home
Samsung 8tb ssd or get a 2tb m.2
Or should I just get both?
for what
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB m.2 at £259.55
Sound like a good deal?
It's not great, you can get sn550 for 179 or pilot e for 206 https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/vkLwrH/mushkin-pilot-e-2-tb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-mknssdpe2tb-d8 https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/zNK2FT/western-digital-blue-sn550-2-tb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-wds200t2b0c
Seems like it's the lowest price it's ever been on amazon by the looks of it
Yeah but Samsung drives aren't good value anyway
Always thought they were classed as being one of the best tbh
They make good drives just not good value
Fair enough. I have 2 at the moment. I wanna swap one of them out for a bigger but not a priority. Wanting to get a couple 4tb of the Samsung SSDs when the price is right
Unless you get the best, most expensive Samsung drive for a hell of a bargain other brands offer the same or better now for cheaper
just wondering, but even if an ODD is not in use, will it still make noise while the pc is running?
i noticed more noise from an hdd than a cd/dvd odd i have
but i wasn't sure
It can still make noise, yes. If something triggers it (like when you open file explorer and it checks if there's a disk) it'll start the motor and move the read lens
but it's not frequent if you leave it alone, right?
Depends on what's trying to access it, but yeah it's usually idle
i thought so, that's a relief
my case has three panels on the front that can be removed, but i wonder if i can make use of those slots for something else besides an odd...
Yeah, they make 5.25" bay converters. I've seen some that change it into some combination of 2.5" and 3.5" trays.
so i can put my drives there to make them easier to replace when necessary?
Yep, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Silverstone-5-25-Inch-3-5-Inch-Converter-SDP10B/dp/B00CKJYJQ0
Or you can add more front panel ports with something like this: https://www.newegg.com/p/36F-00C9-005G5

So i just managed to snag a z590 open box that works perfectly but i have a new 1tb NVMe m.2 ssd from Sk Hynix and an Intel Optane Memory 16gb stick and i dont know which stick to place in first m.2 slot
does anyone have any recommendations for a sata controller, need for hdd for use in vm
What does this mean?
1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 3.0 x4 SSD x 2
do i get 1TB only, and what is the last "x2" for?
im kinda really confused
it means theres 2 of em
2x 1TB SSD
the rest is technical mumbo jumbo
so in laymans terms its 2x 1TB "really stupid fast" SSD
Question
Why does my external hdd download almost as fast as my internal ssd
Pny cs900
Whats the external HDD?
random segate 2tm
wow i type well
seagate 2tb
i can get the exact link if you want me to, itll take a min tho
Seagate 2tb portable hdd?
yeah
I have one but iirc the CS900 is an entry level ssd tho
yeah it came in a pre built
one of the only things left from it

What port are you using for your External hdd
Well is the usb a 3.0 or 2.0
i have no clue
Blue or black usb port?
There you go because 3.0 allow faster transfer speeds that the external hdd would reccomended and was manufactured for and since the ssd is an entry level budget drive they will perform similarly
But you do want to look at the sequential speeds of both drives and that will inform you of their performance
Thanks
Are you looking to upgrade your ssd?
sequential is useless
over 1800 for a 3060 ti pc
means nothing
Well i see it as a starting point tho
2x8gb 3600mhz cl18 ripjaws ram for it
You arent gonna be copying large files that get written in a single line pretty much ever
No?
no.
Oh because it matches real world use and expected results?
Yes
basically files never really get stored all together on a disk
so when ur using the pc, it needs to access multiple parts of a drive to load up a single program
now i kinda feel like i to go back to taking lessons again lol thanks for correcting me tho
Yep np. Pc stuff is hard but you will get great with it.
Well i am decent at builds but still learning
Litta technical aspects to pcs that arent just build and learn
better than i can do
when i was changing the mobo in my pc and the case was incompatible after i got a new case and tookt he pc apart i realized i had no clue how to cable manage
ended up having to have a pc shop build it for me
Yeah i gotta cable manage from a non mod to a full mod psu and thats gonna be fun cause i stress too much even when labeling each cable
Is there’s a USB powered HUB that I can plug 4x 4TB external unpowered Seagate HDDs into one USB port?
I got a USB thing a while back with 6 ports on it for 15$ on amazon
I have an old Dell Optiplex 780 MT, That I need to keep going for a custom application. I need to find disk drives that will still work in it. I think the ones I tried failed because of advanced format issues. Do you know of any that are ready to go, and will work with this system?
looks like it has two sata ports available so
about any sata powered drive
those two are what I'd go with
@dawn ginkgo
You think those will work with no special tricks? This is a ten year old machine running XP.
older hard drives sometimes had these little jumpers you'd have to fiddle with I guess, I've never seemed to have to deal with that, these should be fine
although XP might not have the intelligence to understand SSD trimming and maintenance
I'm mainly worried about the sector size issue, that comes with Advanced Format
sector size issue?
The Newer AF drives could not be detected by the bios. Unsure if I was really unlucky, or I need to find old drives that don't convert sector size. I read a lot about hese issues last week, but no great answers.
maybe you could use compact flash cards
people seem to be able to use them on computers from the 90s
I am gonna buy a new SSD to add for more storage
nice
ok
cool
Guys some storages have "cache" and some don't what is the difference, for example Samsung 970 Evo Plus has 512 mb cache and other storages don't
It's more like 90% of SSDs have a slc cache and they just don't bother to list it
nice, so i'll pick cheaper storages
sn550
@red jay sn550 is a great choice for cheaper or mp34 sometimes but usually it's more
Wowie
i got a question so would i be able to transfer my ssd's with all my stuff on it onto my new pc when it gets here?
yes
would i have to do anything special
or just simply take out the ssd and put it in the new pc
what price do you call budget
mostly sn550
but if your budget doesn't allow for sn550, mp33/helix L works
whats the difference between helix l and lt
500gb but ones cheaper
also what makes the sn550 better than the other 2
faster read and right speeds?
faster random read/write
ight
I mean it's the same drive...
so you would just plug into new pc
power cable and sata cable for 2.5inch ssd
then for m.2 it's pretty self explanatory
Take it out and stick it into the new pc, you'll just have to get rid of windows off of your old boot drive with a wipe so move any important files over to the new drive or something first
my one nvme ssd is not being dtected no more? any tips
Does it show up in bios?
If it doesn't show in bios i would reseat it, maybe it has come loose
If it wasn't screwed in enough or something
@rough galleon it is detecting your m.2, m2_1
i’ve tried
please tell me you havent OCed the cpu
and its on pbo
not a manual oc
but yeah @rough galleon unplug and replug the ssd
i have not OCed the cpu only ram, and it’s been buggy. should we update bios?
@pallid orchid @sour wadi
@rough galleon what board cpu and bios version are you on
okay msi x570 tomahawk wifi
and ik im four versions behind, also 5900x
but i just fixed it
by uninstalling and reinstalling ssd
@sour wadi
Nice
@sour wadi i still will update bios as my ram won’t over lock correctly, it does then black screens if i restart computer
That's fair, you are just enabling xmp correct?
For the ram overclock
You might have just got wack ram and need to rma
rma? @sour wadi but i’m still gonna try to update bios first
rma means using your warranty basically
yea i just saw it, we’ll it over locked fine but then restarted and black screen, so i’m gonna try bios before any of that
Yeah if bios update doesn't work just rma it
okay thank you @sour wadi
Np
RAM OC can be buggy
Turn on XMP
Oh nvm u said ur doing XMP
thats fine
Is this a good deal for this portable storage?
Verbatim DataLife High Density 3.5 inch Microdisks MF-2HD 10 Diskettes Per Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002MBPJNS/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_SZ72B19S0NCT1J5NMA99
no?
better portable storage
:P
i guess if youre that curious the reviews are stating the vendor has been shipping pre-formatted IBM compatible diskettes, so those are prolly useless to you
samsung bar
Say what you want about it, it's near indestructible. It's far more likely to break your USB port than itself if you drop your laptop.
i agree but hey, the name is still funny
I have too many USBs like that. I tried labeling them at one point but the sharpie rubbed off from how much I used them.
Anyone know if the firecuda 530 (with heatsink) is a good SSD to get?
You mean Firecuda 520?
No the 530
Why do you need Gen4?
Why not get a gen4
Slower than gen 3 in random performance, the part that actually matters
Because they are not needed and usually way more expensive than in comparison to a Gen3
You will not actually feel or see a difference in gaming really
Oh
Gen 4 is better for sequential only, like editing 16k video
I highly recommend looking at this for picking out a drive
Helix L usually is what I recommend
Pick one off the "gamers" section in that guide and you're good
On sale also I do believe
Any of the higher tier drives will work too, but will have almost no impact on load times
I'm just looking for a really fast SSD with 500 gigabytes or more
130$
Yeah that 1 TB helix L is perfect then
Does read and write speed mean anything though?
Yes and no
That's purely theoretical in specs. Sequential speeds are stated most often, which don't really matter for gaming.
Even a sata ssd would be fine for most games, unless they use direct texture streaming (which isn't mainstream yet)
Oh yeah would a firecuda SSHD work well as a hard drive?
I got a 1tb SSHD from some laptop I bought off ebay and lmao its not any better than a HDD
its the same speed
Yeah because I was looking at a 50 dollar one
Sshd is just a hard drive with 8GB of nand flash, usually in addition to the dram cache but sometimes without it I think
So really, garbo
You can even allocate an ssd and a hdd into one drive if you wanted
How about a Crucial P5 m.2 ?
I have it as my boot drive, you can then get a PNY regular SSD for storage. No more HDDs for me ever again.
The last hdd I'll ever use is the 4tb one that is on its way that I just traded for
4TB Crucial P5?
Oh HDD. My bad
Ima be honest
Idek what hdd it is just that it's wd
I just wanted the ram gone that I traded for it
And 4tb
Haha. Hey nothing wrong with big ass HDD for storing everything. But for speed. A solid state drive is the way to go
Yeah I've currently got a pny ssd for my boot, 2tb external Seagate and then that 4tb on the way
I dont need too much bulk storage but it was the only offer I got and I decided why not
Nice! And a 3060ti I see!
I have 300gb in bo3 alone lol
Yeah thats a long story
My build has cost me over 1800 now because skytech sucks
No longer a pre build though
Only things left are gpu, cpu, and ssd
I put my@build together thanks to Mercari and YouTube videos. Lol
the system reserved on my hard drive is still awake after switching to boot off the ssd
cloned just fine
not sure what I'm gonna use the other ssd for yet
I have a third not installed that I wanted to use in another machine, my mom's laptop or something
but that cloning process will be more involved, more stuff on her drive, no drive to back the stuff up to, and no cable to plug the ssd into
I'm gonna repartition the hard drive so it's just a big volume but I feel like waiting to do that
WD Blue 3D 250GB vs HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 2TB
haven't partitioned the other 250GB Blue I have installed
aight I'll run on the other one too
RND4K Q32T1 is cpu intensive 😳

So I'm trying to install another m.2 in, and the screws are very securely screwed in, screws feel like they're moving but just aren't. Is there a way to unscrew without too much force?
Maybe you're using the wrong bit for the screw?
Wrong bit could either strip it or not have enough force
Hi, I would like to know if this usb storage device available? the device in question is "Corsair voyager Gtx 1TB "
Why does it have to be Corsair lol?
A sandisk or something would probs be cheaper and better or the same speeds
Sandisk have same size and capacity?
I didn't see a Usb storage from Sandisk with 1TB capacity, could you guide me to a better solution?
That should do
And it's a usb a and usb c one which is nice
it's nice for sure, but the one I posted above is 4 times faster, read and write speed is 440mb/sec
It's also like 400$ lol
The quality is also 4-times better than sandisk

By what metric lol
They wouldn't sell it for 400$ just because it's 4 times faster,lol
Companies do not want to be your friend the usbs are just in plastic/metal housings and read and write data there's no build quality difference lol
I hardly believe that all Usb storages have the same quality, simply because they do not have the same speed. Quality is also a big factor when it comes to give a product a price tag.
So by that logic a rolex is 50x better than a casio watch?
There's nothing more to usbs lol read write and metal/plastic housing, what else would there be
Data storage life span is a big factor
Well drive life span is so over the top anyway, i had a 240gb ssd as only storage in my pc for 6 years and didn't even get near to 1/10 of the drives rated life span
what was the brand of that ssd?
SanDisk
what do you think about this one , they don't mention the speed , although it's way more expensive than corsair : https://www.amazon.com/Apricorn-Validated-256-bit-Encryption-ASK3-1TB/dp/B07QMNC6CD?th=1
Just no
That is a stupid amount for 1tb storage no matter the speed
Never heard of either probs a 30$ usb from Alibaba r something
Apricorn is a real brand, and has been around for a while. They make mostly decent stuff in the mid range. I had a sata to usb adapter from them like 12 years ago.
That adapter finally broke last year btw
Just assumed because of the horrendous price lol
I don't blame you, it's not a major brand but any means. Just thought I'd point out it's got a good chance of actually being good.
600$ good tho
Msrp 3070 or 1tb flash drive
Not even msrp 3070, aib 3070 kek
Keep in mind, Corsair doesn't make the flash, they get someone else to make it, and just slap a brand on it, SanDisk is one of the manufacturers for flash memory, like Toshiba. And well, that makes it hard to give Corsair the advantage in any performance metrics or endurance, just because of higher prices, since it'll be harder to know what flash is actually in their drives.
@umbral frigate that is a lot for 1TB of storage, especially with the speeds it's getting
A samsung NVMe in a usb adapter would be cheaper and way faster
I wouldn't pay more than maybe 110-120 on a 1TB flash drive unless it was really good
It's also worth noting that the speeds listed on USB flash drives are usually burst speeds
Most places I'm looking puts that corsair drive at somewhere around 60MB/s for real world usage
maybe im dumb, but I cant think of a single use case for a 1tb flash drive
Console storage expansion
wouldnt it be better and cheaper to get an external SSD drive ?
Windows to go
windows doesnt need 1tb of space?
Depends, I've seen some 1tb drives go for $50
fair enough
If you're using Windows to go you might be storing a lot of data next to it
1tb SD cards are fun too
I’m looking for a modem compatible with Comcast/XFINITY their upgraded modem is xb7 CGM4331COM and TG4482A, / does Newegg have something comparable??

Ok thanks sorry for the bother
Good Day everyone: I'm looking for an enclosure for a 2.5" hard drive. The drive is big (12mm) and most enclosures only accomodate up to 9 mm. anyone have an recommendation?
Where are you from @somber falcon ?
Austin
Ah okay, just checking so I know where to look, country-wise
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
Pilot?
Pilot e i assume you're talking about? isn't a external ssd and is definitely not as low as 50$ for 1tb unfortunately lol
Lmao
i'm not a hardcore gamer and i don't plan on having a huge library but would a 256gb m.2 and a 1tb ssd work well?
just get a 1tb ssd
or a 512gb ssd and a 2tb hdd
which, imo is the ideal storage configuration
simply from a cost per GB perspective
Yup. Would work perfectly
I'm looking to build a storage system to handle data for a photo and video department. Does anyone have recommendations on the best jbod enclosure and drives? I'd aim for around 30 TB and partition it for redundancy.
Or would you go a different route with it?
so i have a pny cs900 for my boot drive
is it worth it getting a 128gb nvme drive for boot?
nope
kk thanks
i can even still feel snappy with wd green sata
128 and 256gb drives are a waste of money 512gb is like 3$ more than a 250gb
i dont need the extra storage space
i just wasnt sure if there wsa any noticeable difference for a boot drive
Nah
Still not worth like 3$ more for 2x more storage
