@olive wadi gotta get tdmr in there too >:D
poopy magnetic recording
Newbie, looking for desktop box for several bays, thinking 2 ironwolf 18's to start, any recommendations. Looking to consolidate lots of photos~ 75k+ Also need file recovery software recommendations Mac's, but will interface with PC too. Any recommendations appreciated.
desktop storage
Why not just get a NAS?
I assume they're asking for a nas..?
i appreciate the foresight, going with seagate drives and having a file recovery system on standby
id use wd/toshiba nas drives
iirc toshiba maxes at 12tb rn though
File recovery like raid 1 or like cloud backup also a question
Looks pretty fugly tbh
: (
Which drive is it
The benchmark was at 1gb
Not full load
But either way I’m happy haha I come from HDD
Yeahh
raid is not a backup
raid is real time replication
no
raid is just a somewhat self healing array
it is NEVER to be confused with a backup
it is redundancy only

A good techie is always asking questions and expanding their knowledge further, while helping others do the same. Never stop learning.
you have learned of my existence
wait no maybe a few things
to some degree

:bean:
i have learned that as long as u meme u can advertise in #general-chat

kidding mods pls no
At least you don't go over the top plugging your business
i never unironically advertise here
Hey, would you be mad if I had you host for me and I uploaded my vintage virus collection
i have a 14tb mg07
enterprise drive
you can get them in 16tb
14tb
1tb have fun
I'll take that as a no then
i already have a lot
Hi Techno-wizards....I need some advice. We have a Dell 3200 rack server with 2TB swappable (replaceable) hard drives. Dell doesn't have anymore in stock. Any suggestions where to purchase? (Dell Tag Number 3ZJ4HQ1 for Server). Thanks - Angie
@feral kelp The powervault md3200? That uses SAS drives. Any SAS drive should do, it doesn't specify any specific drives in the manual.
Thank you Fal'Cie
should i get a 1tb ssd or a 4tb hdd for my steam library
Depends what you play. Large games like CoD? Or relatively smaller games?
SSD is preferred to minimize load times but if you're running a bunch of massive games you'll need the space
get both imo
either would work depending on the size of your library tbh
ssd is preferred over hdd but if it's such a big library then go hdd
Only $200 or so
Just skip out on McDonald’s for a few days
If you have an SSD OS drive, HDD not really be that slow as a game drive
or buy phat ssd 😎
How do you fix a automatic repair on a pc
phat ssd is expensive smh
Duuuuude that has to be filled now, it must live to its potential
I am looking at the "ORICO 2 Bay Dual Bay 2.5'' HDD Enclosure With Raid Function SATA to USB 3.0 Transparent Hard Drive Box Support UASP for 2.5 inch 7-9.5 mm Support UASP protocol SATA III Tool Free Up to 6TB"
Does this include a dual-SATA to USB 3.0 adapter?
I have dual Samsung drives that were in a Seagate housing using RAID0.
Before I purchase this product, I want to be sure that I can attach old striped disks to save the data. Any ideas?
You can recover raid volumes even if you only plug one in at a time, you just make a virtual disk out of the bits and raid them in software
That's good to know! Thank you
But this case is cheaper than the software, as far as I can tell
that is a really long name huh
who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you?
Can I use any m.2 slots for my OS? Or does it have to be the first one?
any
I’m trying to research what 32gb/s vs 64gb/s m.2 support means. Can’t find anything on it. Is it just 64gb/s the new gen support? Im totally lost 😅
So if I use a gen 3 m.2 nvme ssd on a pci-e 4 slot is that fine?
Yep
Ahh okay i did some research. Makes more sense now. Thank you
YW
would recommend using the first one
generally uses PCIE lanes off the CPU and muh latency is lower
doesn't really matter if you use the second one though
Ahh. I used the second one because it had a heatsink, my mobo is b550m tuf gaming plus wifi
Is it easy to switch back to the first slot?
You can put the heatsink on other slots
And yeah, just unscrew, unslot, slot in to new slot, screw back in
Got it! Thanks!
If it doesn’t boot to the right drive or it says no OS detected then maybe dig around in the boot order part of BIOS
Don't swap them
If the heatsink is there there's a good chance they just wired the board differently
Bottom slot is probably CPU lanes, top slot chipset lanes
It said the top slot is 64gb/s pcie 4. The bottom is 32gb/s
It said in their website
Asus TUF B550m Gaming Plus Wifi
Or TUF Gaming B550m Plus wifi i mean
Yeaah
But bottom just has the heatsink.
Don't waste money on gen 4 drives yet, not worth it
Not really gonna matter which slot TBH
Yep
Just the heatsink. Is the difference
It's just the M2_1 slot is PCI-E 4.0 if you have a gen 4 drive
@olive wadi so uh, I recognized your pfp, and remembered to research that again, is the control gate the word line?
word line controls the control gate
Asus big brain time
Tanks
modern CFT cells are just a very abstract floating gate mosfet
I go look at how writing to charge traps works now
same way that writing to FGmos works
pulling the word line high, and using nordheim fowler tunelling and high current density to get electrons into the flashtrap
I barely understand what fgmos is, not to say anything about understanding what it does
fgmos is just a mosfet with a floating gate
a transistor with an extra gate that retains its properties during power loss
CFT is the same thing it's just been turned abstract ™️
basically takes fgmos structure and turns it into a cylinder
Yea, I know that much, but I'm not sure on how the "floating" gate affects the mosfet itself, and the principles behind it
pretty simple
So back to that channel I go
Okay
if the floating gate (or flashtrap) is charged you add resistance
because electrons are negatively charged
and negative repels negative
so you change the voltage threshold
Yes, but how do you change the electrons in the charge trap
because you've added resistance to the channel going through
How does it go in and out
fowler nordheim tunelling
quantum leap ™️
Basically there's some dumb rule that some guy discovered
Yay quantum tunneling
that electrons can magically jump through materials they normally wouldn't bea ble to
purely based on probability
so you put super high current density off the bit line into the channel going through the string
and pull the word line high for the cells you want to program
The bit line is the center channel, right?
Ah, so the bit line connects the center channel to the controller?
when the word line is pulled high (positive charge) you have a high voltage between the channel and the flashtrap
so theres tunnelling
it connects it to the peripheral circuitry
which is then connected to the rest of the ssd
which is then connected to the controller
Okay
peripheral circuitry being the circuitry that's used to control the bit line and word line etc
So how does changing the voltage while reading not edit what's in the charge trap, or does it?
it doesn't
although it technically can
which is why we have ECC just in case
but it shouldn't
no you don't let any electrons leave when you read a cell
you just run current through the center channel off the bit line and read the voltage threshold required to let the current pass each cell
I thought since word line voltage go up and down to read threshold voltage, that voltage would make electrons yeet themselves into the CT or out of the CT
current density shouldn't be enough
but it can still happen
which is why there's ECC
remember you need high current density to increase the probability of fowler nordheim tunnelling
Current density is density of electrons, correct?
So, is this about density of electrons in the gate or the central channel?
central channel
you read and write from the central channel
and use the word line to either allow current to pass, or charge the CFT
in order to discharge the CFT you apply a negative charge to the control gate
which should force the CFT to discharge in the central channel
that's not even the complicated part tbh
I am smol brain
sub-page bs i don't even want to bother with
well we're reaching the limits of my understanding
I'll try to stay within
modern nand pee pee poo poos all over the traditional rules
when we get into sub-page addressibility
i don't understand sub page awareness but it's real
4K random read/write is addressing sub pages
Hmmmm
Won't reach mine at all then xD
So, the difference between reading and writing is that there's not enough electrons (current density) in the central channel while reading, and when you're not reading, electrons (current density) stack up in the central channel, therefore changing the word line can affect the CT?
yep
ish
another difference is that you'd pull the voltage higher on the word line for writing
so high current density+high voltage on the word line=program to the cell
if we were to erase a cell though I'd assume we'd wipe out a page since erasing isn't dependent on the bit line
negatively charged word line would only be used for erasing
So, you're not zeroing a drive, but one-ing a drive?
Lol
Fair, I'll take a look when I'm off mobile
got rid of all "rarely priced well" and just put in all caps to buy the cheapest at the top
nope
Hm
No XT=not dramless
Hm
unsure how phisons naming scheme works
🤷🏽♂️
Probably want to put a quick explanation on the bottom for controller, dram vs hmb, and how seq doesn't mean everyday perf
asus engineering departments gone cooky
MAYBE
And I kind of want to touch addressing sub-pages, it's prob too complicated for my smol brain, but from the explanation, it's something with controller magic that ignores inputs from certain bit lines at certain word line voltages?
Well, maybe not controller side, if bit line is connected to peripheral circuitry
You can WHAT
rows
so if you don't want to write to a cell on a specific string
just don't apply any current to the bit line there
Turn them off as in actually making them unusable or telling the controller to ignore them?
as in
don't make electricity go through the bit line that's connected to the string with the cell that you don't want to modify while you are modifying other cells in the page
Oh, so controller can actually control electron movement through the central channel and bit lines?
if there's no electricity going down the string there's no way to program to the cell
the controller can control the peripheral circuitry
which can control the movement of electricity
Is there something at the "bottom" of the stacks of cells connected to the peripheral circuitry?
there are transistors in here called the bit line selector transistor
and if a bit line isn't selected there isn't electricity flowing through it
ground? lol
remember
there are things called bit line selectors
and word line selectors
they are just transistors which pick which bitlines and word lines we want electricity going through
so if we don't select those
Forcing me to get out of bed to make an illustration for a question smh
no electricity goes through them
gonna pull out the planar nand diagram
if i pull word line 2 high
but don't select the bit line select transistor
O no electrical diagrams
Hm
HOWEVER i don't understand how you can erase sub-pages or if it's even possible
because you don't need electricity flowing through the string to erase the cell
My previous question was about the ground select transistor, looks like it exists
Something at the 'bottom'
ACTUALLY
if the ground selector transistor
is closed
does erasing the cell still work??? 🤔
im not an EE so i have no clue
lmao
who cares
There'd be no voltage if there's no ground tho, right?
SSDs are boring
I'm nowhere near an ee person
yep you might need the ground open to create enough voltage to erase a cell
Better to learn now
If there's no voltage, electrons should stay where they are, so depending on the previous action, there may or may not be enough current density to allow for reading/writing? Maybe???
Too much information for one day, I think I'll come back in a month to ask aegis questions after I forget everything :p
lol pee pee poo poo
@olive wadi by the way, where's the natural habitat of this newmaxx guy?
oh yea there's also like a thing called the source line aswell
bit weird on some diagrams
@olive wadi gib diagram?
Guessing from the name, is it something that connects central channel to ground?
end me please
too many diagrams out there that have small contradictions
varies from die to die
😎
use google
Rip google tells me nothing tho
I guess I need to go back and check up on what exactly the differences between nor and nand conceptually is
@olive wadi maybe last question, so nand theoretically may or may not be able to address sub-pages, but nand by nature is not bit addressable, right?
Actually no I'm being dumb
Each CTF nand cell holds multiple bits
It'd be impossible to address a single bit
Sorry to jump in lads. For gaming the quality of an M.2 drive doesn't really matter right as long as it had cashe?
SSDs are weird and wacky
Since we're talking about gaming, here's a loading time benchmark, the SN550 is a dramless drive, but uses HMB, and still pulls ahead of other drives slightly
I thought the SN 550 used slc caching?
There's no mushkin on there
no helix-l or pilot-e, but just example
Yeah but specifically no HMB on the 550
it's wacky asf
any 50$ cad nvme drives?
It uses HMB @narrow sorrel. Quoting Tom's hardware:
"While the WD Blue SN500 went without DRAM or HMB and instead relied solely on a small portion of SRAM for the task, WD’s Blue SN550 adopts the feature. Windows reports a default allocation amount of 64MB of the host system’s DRAM."
Oh, I misread that when I looked it up. Now I feel like a goof. I even have two of them
lel
's fine, I just run them in raid and shove my games on them, dram makes no difference to me
every SSD which uses QLC or TLC flash uses PSLC caching
it's game loading times are probably still the same lmao
probs yeah
So if I'm only using my rig to game there's no need for me to get something like Samsung 970 Evo plus right? Been debating on which M.2 to buy for a while.
READ
BUY CHEAPEST IN CATEGORY THAT APPLIES TO YOUR USE CASE
???? PROFIT
I'm trying to figure it out. The rig I have is a small build so I'm trying to only run M.2's
Geez, calm down on the caps lock
no
Windshields Lock™
Idk she said she was banned for quoting a price for lililabs server to bob but I didn’t believe her
Huh?
^Good
Better: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B08JPLRGYQ
thx
inland ones are annoying
like need to differentiate between the Inland Premium NVMe drive with E12 and TLC
and the SATA with unknown controller
yea but people buy them so
worth tiering
or rather
they aren't garbage
so worth tiering
I demand the bean returns
wheres the server with the ball emojis at
like
the birds
which are balls
like ball shaped
circular birds
spheres
huh
you know what im talking about
no, i dont

i'm stealing that entire sentence
not that
@olive wadi might've taken newmaxx's pdf, so, a page is all the cells that share a word line, and a block is all the cells that share the central column/bit line right?
something like that
busyt
going to go slip some surly bonds
dont worry about it
Hey is it worth it to get sn750 over the sn550? For day to day stuff?
Yeah. I don’t think I’ll be sending massive files everyday
check pilot-e, mp34, sn750
P31 gold
if none of those, check helix-l, mp33, sn550
there arent any 'opinions' here, just facts
they're coasting off fame

yes, I'm agreeing with you
Haha 😂
@astral tiger check the price on rest of these
also P31 gold
Yes
Okay
mp34 it is
I’d go for samsung
yeah
Okay 😁 everything solved
Now i can sleep peacefully 😌
Sn750 is so expensive
367qar
@olive wadi so, back for more questions, are there usually isolation WL's between sub-blocks? or are those only in cells that are designed for sub-block erasure, or, dunno, large cells like 128L but not on 64L
done some talking to newmaxx
you don't erase sub blocks
you always erase by the entire block to avoid excessive wear
pretty sure
Interesting
you have dummy word lines that don't count as "layers"
layers just counts the amount of actual word lines
hm
@olive wadi do higher layer count flash just get rid of some isolation WLs and hope ECC catches all the errors from distortion?
you don't need much in the way of isolation WL with modern nand I don't believe
in 3D nand you have a decent bit of leeway in not having too much cell interference
and i mean, NAND in general requires ECC so
would be interesting to see how many corrected errors your drive gets just doing regular things lol
hm
is there any graceful way to put an external USB HDD in a case?
Why would you want to
Well, it has a 3.5" SATA III HDD in it @torpid adder
I'm waiting on the parts for the entire build so not sure.
You shouldn't remove an external drive from its enclosure
It's broken, but the drive itself is perfect
They don't use SATA ports on them
They generally do use sata ports..
Or else shucking wouldn't be a thing
is this a good ssd? https://www.newegg.ca/samsung-860-evo-series-500gb/p/N82E16820147674
it looks usable to me, just need to pick up some cables (I think)
often with those you'll have trouble with 3.3V power not letting them start up
you may need to pin mod them or use a molex to sata (one that's crimped not molded or 🔥) to get the drive to start
Look for cheaper options in the "What if I don't have an m.2 slot" If you don't have one
otherwise it's fine ish
Is there someone here that can tell me if this M.2: https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-1tb-black-sn850-nvme/p/N82E16820250161?Item=N82E16820250161 is compatible with this motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/evga-x99-classified-151-he-e999-kr/p/N82E16813188163 ? I am looking to buy the above M.2 but I am having a hard time determining whether or not they are compatible. Please help.
It does support m.2 but not sure if it supporting pcle 3 or 4.
Its supporting only pcle 3 for what i have seen so you wont get the full write/read speed the m.2 you want to buy is offering
@red jay
@muted pollen So if I get the PCIe 4 M.2, it will bottleneck to the PCIe 3 limit?
Yes
@muted pollen Thank you for clearing that up for me. I was actually concerned that might be the case too because of my motherboard being now 5 years old. Perhaps it's time to upgrade my PC again.
Btw Intel doesn’t support Gen 4 right now currently it’s just AMD
I didn't realize that. Given the newest versions of AMD processors now, do you think it would be worth it to change to AMD or should I stay with Intel? I currently have an i7 5820K, 16GB RAM, and a GTX1080.
No idea been trying to figure that out myself
I know the feeling. I see a bunch of videos of reviewers like Jaystwocents. What he shows seems promising but what he gets for performance may not be what I get at home.
My last AMD was an AMD FX60 back in 2006.
I’ve never had an AMD
I guess it comes down to personal preference and price.
Hoorah. Both my gen4 drives finally run at full speed.
Idk how to do that, but thanks for mentioning that it might need that
lots of tutorials on youtube
Hello guys, I have a question related to upgrading my MSI GL62M 7RDX 128 gb m2 drive to 512 gb any suggestions would be appreciated also which adapter would work best for data cloning -- Thanks Rit

I do not believe that laptop has an M.2 slot
I do see Sata on the motherboard though
it says STORAGE CAPABILITY 1x M.2 SSD Combo (NVMe PCIe Gen3 / SATA ) SSD 1x 2.5" SATA HDD HDD
does it now?
how many drives do you currently have in there?
an SSD and an HDD I presume?
should i factory reset my laptop? it doesnt have much space, i went to download a game but didnt realize it would leave me with 4 gb
when the biggest item in there is 2 gb
windirstat
in
the windows r thing?
or
an app
Bigger deive might be good though. 120 gb kinda small
ik
Windirstat is a separate software
im gonna talk to my parents about upgrading to maybe a 500gb SSD
But windows itself has an option to delete temp data
which shouldnt cost too much
@minor sun is it off of the website i screenshotted
That should be it
wtf
Every block is a file
color is type of file
click on them to check what file is what
idk but i agree
@nimble robin nah, it's a visual representation of what each file is taking up size wise
No
It's sorted by folder (Location wise)
Just organjzed by file type
Color is by file type
what
so the biggest file is at the top smallest at the bottom or whatever
No
Click on the blocks
The reason you shouldn't just delete big files first is because programs like games split data up
so if you delete one file, it won't work anymore, and you may want to delete the whole folder
bruh theres millions of blocks lol
Reducing page file and disabling hibernation could save you 10gb
where do i do so?
@red jay Once you click on a block, it shows you what it is, and what folder they're in
yea
So delete the folder if you don't want it anymore
For example, CSGO is taking up all of this space on this drive:
whats streaming assetts?
do i need it? :/
does it have to do with streamlabs obs or sum
@dusk turtle reading the bottom of the window doesn't select the file for the folder so you can delete it via windirstat :P
should i delete genshin?
i mean i play the game often but i have it on my phone
and it takes up a hellish amount of space
If you don't really care about playing it on PC, and need space for other things, sure.
idk if i should i like it on pc
plus easier to play with friends and chat in co op
what else do i delete
:/
a lot of it is system files
You can check all of these
what are they
Right click windows icon, programs and features. Start picking what you dont need or use and uninstall it.
I don't know, just looking at things that might be applications taking a lot of space.
do i need any of these
If they're there, most likely means some game downloaded it to be able to work
the only game i have installed rn is genshin
so ima delete thise
the game can reinstall it if i ever reinstall said game
well
im not uninstalling genshin
i still have only like 20 gb
free
what else can i get rid of
welp no choice but to delete genshin
50 gb free! :D
not a lot but
soemthing
i defo am gonna talk to my mom abt using my money to upgrade my storage
any particular NAS bays and drives I should look out for, should I choose to set one up?
It's good to get drives that are made for server or NAS applications, such as WD Red, but not completely necessary. Other drives might have power save settings that don't work well or they wear out faster.
any specific bays?
Depends on what you want to use it for
got a advertisement email from wegg about it
mildly interested
8tb disks are expensive as hell tho
If just for media storage you can just get whatever you think will work for how much you want to store as far as bays.
$200 for a WD Red 8TB is pretty reasonable tbh
hey yall. how does the nerfed XPG SX8200 Pro 1tb perform against other $110 USD drives like the Mushkin Pilot-E and Sabrent Rocket Q
well
not that long a lifespan tho
and they get hot
otherwise, its a relatively fast drive
Mushkin best
Sabrent slow
8200 Still OK
Do you know how much difference does dram make in nvme? if so, where will the lack of dram show it's short comings?
I believe a DRAM cache helps with writes
thanks
by writes it could be downloading files, saving files, and transferring files to the nvme right?
Most likely you won't notice doing that
More disk to disk transfers
not downloading
I tell you what tho
my SX 8100 tranferring Cyberpunk to my 970 EVO Plus was slow as hell
after about 10 minutes
Seagate EXOS vs Ironwolf PRO vs WD Gold, all 18tb?
aside from cost
ooooh, another one from Seagate called Skyhawk AI
whats the difference?
WD has more cache (512 MB vs 216 on the others)
The skyhawk is made for 24/7 surveillance recording, bad access times
The exos and the gold both have similar MTBF, the highest of the four at 2.5 million hours
Personally it would be between the Seagate Exos and the WD Gold, both have similar features and performance, and both are made for "enterprise storage" which is fine for NAS
@nimble robin
good value 2tb m.2?
Do you have budget constraints?
by value i mean reasonable not like the 970
for example samsung 970 write is 2500 mb/s and is 144
about the same price as a sabrent rocket
which you can get way faster speeds.
1tb=150
If you don't simply know how to set one up.
Sabrent Rocket 4.
is that price.
150
for 1tb
1tb
i mean, fast speeds compared to the 970 for that price
Samsung always seemed a tad overpriced.
true kek
You pay for the name on Samsung
finally VIP
compareable
very compareable
so close that you should just buy whats cheaper
completely irrelevant and useless ssd
mushkin pilot-E 2tb is like $210 right now
Just got me a Mushkin Pilot-E 1TB to replace my Samsung 860 Evo 500GB. Finally time to jump into the realm of NVMe storage
Also, I love that Newegg supports PayPal Pay in 4.
Laughs in 2 of them

Atleast blender meshes actually go fast
I could of recommended a terrible barracuda
lmao
none of the barracuda ssds are particularly bad
except the like
q1 maybe
???
ah yes
you're one of those
"barracuda bad" people
anything with barracuda in the name
💩
Okay, go buy a HG series
???

im talking about ssds SIR
Hitachi HG "Pixie Dust"
bx200 is crucial
nothing to do with seagate barracuda brand
yep optane has been dead for a while
not saying it has anything to do
3dxpoint fabs are also shutting down
Intel bouta buy microns 3dxpoint fab tho
don't care

maybe'
Whats your logic
Nothing good nothing bad kinda thing
Unknown in terms of reasons to buy
meh
I wonder whats the worst m.2
probably a wifi card
worst m.2 ssd would probably be an m.2 wifi card
would make a horrible ssd
Okay then, someone is on more cocaine than me
Worst m.2 card would prob be that graphics adapter
yep
those m.2s good?
love how it says that the 905p is for ballers only lmao
Het team, I am looking for a USB hub that I can plug 7 external 5TB HDDs into and use them all on the same computer. Ive bought two different ones and I guess since the HDDs are not powered, the hub doesn't produce enough power (even when the hubs powered) to run them all at the same time. Can you recommend a hub that would work for me?
what usb interface will you be using?
If the drives don't have their own power, that's at least 3.5 amps. You'll need a couple hubs for that. Why are these external and not internal? The speed of all those drives on a USB hub will be really poor since they all share the same connection
If you are doing something like this you should use a USB card with a dedicated controller for each port
Sonnet has one
forgot that usb expansion cards existed smh
Or get a external raid enclosure
I’ve got a set of HDDs that some coworkers have collected over the years and have left but we wanted to do a duplicate file find as well as group files/docs/images together. I don’t mind getting 2-3 hubs of they will allow that ability honestly.
Yes. That’s the other thing. We don’t have any hardware other than laptops with USB’s to plug into (4 person team now).
shuck them
what he can probably do is invest in some sort of NAS system, connect the hard drives there and the other laptops can connect to the storage in the nas from the network
shuck them?
Just remember that if you have a NAS, you should also take the time for cloud backups.
Looking to buy a cheap SATA SSD for my bootleg server (ripped out laptop mobo with desktop fan zip tied on).
I don't need it to be super fast since I expect it to be network bottlenecked, but some endurance and reasonable storage (at least 250GB?) are important. I presume buying used isn't going to net me great endurance points, so is there anything cheap I can buy brand new?
what price point are you mainly aiming for?
as cheap as is reasonable to plop onto a server
Just want to self host a few things, maybe a minecraft server and mathics for school.
France again, correct? A single drive?
Yes. I'm still in France. :cri:
lol
I forgot I did that. It only has a 3 pin and the fan is 4 pin haha
wd blue, mx500, and barracuda 120 are about 40 euros for 250gb, 500gb should be 50-60 euros
cheapest i see on pcpp for >200gb is bx500 for 30 euros
bx sad
I've heard of wd blue before, but I don't know much about ssd perf. How is endurance? I'd be reading a lot and writing a bit less, but it'll be running all the time.
I'm looking through alternate rn
XPG SX6000 Lite. Capacité du Solid State Drive (SSD): 128 Go, Facteur de forme SSD: M.2, Vitesse de lecture: 1800 Mo/s, Vitesse d'écriture: 1200 Mo...
well
it's adata
so it's sketch for endurance
And then there's this, still a bit sketch for endurnace, but less than adata

@olive wadi smh wack controller and nand
what else am I going to conclude
I didn't even know realtek made SSD controllers
I thought they only made onboard audio
Thanks for the links! Looks like shipping gets most of them over 50€... I was hoping to spend 20€-ish... 😅
Maybe I could just buy a used unit. What could possibly go wrong?
~~I'm having minor regrets... https://www.leboncoin.fr/informatique/1947346570.htm~~
30€ or so. He says it's not used much.
Is that drive any good?
Well, it seems that it's too old to be on the ssd mastersheet..?
also, that's about 10tb written, not bad, but it's been used, dunno why SMART health is at 98% not 100% though
:o didn't know there was a master spreadsheet. Found it in the pins.
I might order this one as I'm a bit low on $$$ atm (thanks NVIDIA), maybe upgrade later if it starts getting slow.
As long as it doesn't randomly fail and take all the data with it like my old HDD...
Good Day all
hello
I have a question about swapping out an HDD for a new SSD in my laptop
I have an HP Envy 17 (17t-K000 CT0) I am wondering what software I would use to clone my existing HDD onto the new 2Tb SDD, and what cable assembly I should buy to accomplish this.
when did you buy it?
Laptop?
2014 I think
not to dissuade you but do you really think its worth it to upgrade to an SSD rather than just getting a new laptop?
I had a feeling you might say that...lol
I am willing to help if you have a reason to keep it
But I, personally, think it would be better to just get a new one
I think it might be worth $200.00 to try and boost my performance and boot times...everything else about it is in good shape
for the SSD
which SSD are you getting thats $200 lmao
Crucial makes a 2TB
which one
Mx 500 ?
the M.2 one or the Sata one?
SATA
do you know if your laptop has an M.2 port?
no
no you do not or no it does not
sorry, no I do not know.
ok
I hate the idea of just tossing this laptop
and is it still running windows 8.1 or something like that?
ok cool
If I was gonna get a new computer, I would prolly get a new desktop
maybe try to build one
having a hard time finding your laptop online
can you link me a place where I would be able to find info about your laptop?
This should be it
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04355629.pdf
there we go
nice
sorry guys, I'm an electrician. I build things, I use computers, but not super knowledgeable...yet working on it.
Not
sucks
probably 'cause its so OLD lol.
so that MX500 will be a good option then but according to both those websites, the laptop only supports up to 1tb internal drives
M.2 is a relatively new form factor
not completely surprising
is it standard sata connector?
I havent opened it up yet...
Yes
PITA to replace though, gotta go in through the top
(wondering why there's a max size limit, thought it could've been some kind of proprietary thing that could only give so much power)
Just the max size it comes with
I believe it has 1000 GB HDD now. So, I'd be stuck with a 1 TB SSD... Maybe I would be better off going with a new built Desktop.
Oh, then it should be fine with any size
right?
If it's standard sata, no limit on size as long as it fits
Im just saddened that things become outdated so quickly
Moore's law :(
unfortunate
if you give a budget I can construct something for you on PcPartPicker
a new desktop
Thats hard...I don't know where the cutoffs are. I could go $1000.00, but I don't know if that's ridiculously high, or low. I would want a case and power supply that would last for future upgrading...
Like I say...I'm just learning.
okay
Assuming parts at msrp
I'm in class rn but I'm sure Mr1111 has something cooked up already
Here's a start @wintry fractal

Segotep PSU is surprisingly decent, you could go higher for a Corsair CX or CX-F if you really want, but yea
PCPP is being dumb
as it does
