because sata speeds in general cap out at 500mb/s and oftentimes even good sata ssds will have meh sequential performance
if you're going for pure game storage hdd is still more than fine and will provide you with more storage density at the same price
or even less
HHD isn't great for games anymore
for example a 1tb sata ssd will cost around $100 and a 4tb HDD will be around $80
Yeah but you're not gonna have 4 TB of games
yea im currently looking for strickly game space and maybe other random stuff but nothing major
Assuming the prebuilt has 500gb m.2, they could have OS + a few other things on it and then get 2tb of SATA SSD for ~200$
2tb is plenty for a primarily gaming-based system
it depends, i know several people with 4tb of games lol
Alright but I would much rather have the faster load times on an ssd. @red jay Lili does have a higher rank than me here but I would advise you to get a third opinion as well before buying hhd for games
im also a systems administrator that focuses mostly on storage
yeah, but you paid for that
I appreciate the info guys. This is my first PC so im not really sure if the difference of SSD to HDD is going to be a deal breaker for me
most people dont wanna, so we still tell people to get hdds, because thats the cost effective option
Tree already said they have $200 budget
I'm not saying HDD are always bad, but when you have $200 and need primarily game storage, you should buy some sort of SSD
SSD for OS and programs, HDD for game and file storage
^^^^^^^^
because HDDs are fast enough and reliable enough
Loading screen enthusiasts huh
no we have patience
and can spare the extra 4 seconds it takes for my game to load
It's not 4 seconds though
it really is tho, my hdds put in work
U crack a whip at them to make em go faster or something?
i dont need to
my array does like 4gb/s lol
depends, HDDs really show their slowness when having to deal with a bunch of IO requests. When you're using the HDD as a game/file storage, the PC doesnt ask for many IO requests. When gaming, you're basically asking for some large files during loading and nothing else is usually using the HDD. You really see issues when having something like an OS on the drive and gaming at the same time. Now, loading times can differ still an okay amount from SSD to HDD, could be like 15s or smth, but lot of the time is that worth justifying getting like a quarter of the storage?
I hadn't heard about the OS on a separate drive thing, I've only used an hdd with the OS on it as well. I would still say in this case tree should go with solid state for the versatility and durability/reliability
im telling you hdd is the better option 9/10 times
for density over speed
for games
ahh
thats not good but how do i get everything over
windows doesnt want to transfer
so what do i do after i get it
u run it
sounds sketchy lol
???
but i dont even know what it is
im not in the mood to explain stuff but its literally cloning software licensed by crucial to you
oh ok
you can always google "what is acronis" to learn more fun facts
theyre basically the biggest drive cloning service out there
does it delete the old files or keeps them and sets the cloned files as the main ones?
keeps
Reason: Bad word usage
this also will work just look up tutorial
would have preferred acronis but whatever
What's the best 1TB M.2. drive I can get for 140AUD or lower? Apparently WD SN550 is good but idk what others think
550 bad

ah
about 110usd
kk
mp34/sn750
check local prices for those
it goes mp34, sn750, 970 evo plus
from like
best value to best ssd at price point
but the evo plus will be more
yea, the evo is 200aud
however it comes with cloning software so might want to consider that
imo the best clone software
what are the benefits of that?
if ur upgrading system, it will just copy everything over
ahh
should i spend an extra $70 on a 970 evo?
or go with the mp34?
sn750 costs more than the 970 evo here
just 970 evo
i dont like the evo as much
id grab the mp34
and you can figure out clonezilla when u need to copy
mhm
so dont bother
what
dont bother trying to save $5 on storage
i cant tell if you're being an ass or not cause im tired
but if the manufacturer doesnt provide a datasheet its generally a red flag

so congrats the only spec is "3d nand"
ok
i could not find any samsung drive for less then 60usd
then get it in 21> hours?
if you dont use the better platform to buy things
for some reason
just wait for whats on sale when u actually are ready to buy the build
since you dont seem to care abt brand
there is 0 need to plan a pc build now
ik
that youre gonna do in a few months
so dont waste ppls time honestly, whatever anyone tells you to buy will probably either be outclassed or outdated by the time you actually buy
idk if it fits in this channel or #windows-ios but is it possible to take an ssd with only games on it on a new computer and istalling windows and other programms on it without any risk?
You could but I wouldn't. I'd do a clean install.
ok and how about buying a new m.ssd and installing windows on that but still using my old ssd?
You can do that. I have a couple hds with movies etc that I reuse, but any programs get reinstalled.
rn i have an hdd with windows and programms and a ssd with only games. for my new build i would like to get rid off the old hhd and keep my ssd
lol im dumb do i install the OS to the raid array or do i need a separate drive?
oh wait no because BIOS dosent know how to boot from a partition larger then 2.2TB
so looks like i will need another drive
I have a Samsung mod. np300v5a hdd drive is seagate st500lmo12 500gb dead! I would like to replace it with a ssd 500 gb that would be a direct install is a ssd that will be compatable available?
what do you mean direct install? as in a internal ssd?
Mmmm, is it still running WIndows 7?
The reason I asked about Windows 7 is that you'll need to be sure it activates TRIM for the ssd and doesn't defrag it. Otherwise, pop one of these in and go. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=ssd+500gb&qid=1609792494&sr=8-3
@steep fractal
yes I am replacing the internal hard drive
yes still running W7 I will be doing a complete install from origenal disk will that work?
It should, yes
But still worth a check once you're done
thanks I am just a newbie and the help is great
YW
The Samsung SSD is plug and play
Just check TRIM after you're done and enjoy the speed boost
great just what I was hoping for thanks!!
anyone know any good promo codes out there about to buy an m.2 ssd and hardrive
Go check wegg, micro center if theres one near u, and best buy for deals
ok thx
promo codes
use Honey
i wouldnt run 7 anymore, it is EOL which means no more security patches. I wouldn't trust it for anything at all anymore
Which should I get 970 evo or evo plus?
evo
evo plus
$10 more for god tier nand and slightly better sequential is very worth
mobo bios not notice my m.2
its installed correctly
b550i gaming edge wifi mini-itx
What motherboard and what M.2?
samsung 970 evo 500gb
Is it held down with a screw?
Front or back slot?
front
Did you take out the extra standoff?
yes
Label with chips facing up?
yes
Hmmmm, it should just show up
can u even install an ssd upside down
I dunno, never tried but I don't question anything any more
The things I've seen here............. XD
Anyway, I'd do a Clear CMOS and see if it shows up
If not, try the slot on the back
ok
I didn't see anything in the manual about special set up
Hoping in on this talk. I'm fairly knowledged in hardware but not so strong in the SSD department and I'm about to buy one. Specs of the evo 970 is promising and it seems it gets a lot of high praises but my goodness the jump from 1tb - 2tb ssd is way too ridiculous.I'll eventually get me a 1tb evo but I was hoping to get a 2tb one. Any suggestions as to alternatives that are not $500? I was hoping for mid $200. A little over 260 and 270 is acceptable but I'm not trying to hit 300 unless it is truly worth it. This is probably a question asked here often and I'm scrolling up and reading a fair share that I can but if anyone is willing to jump in and throw suggestions, I'm very much all ears... well eyes
Oh I should probably add that my interface is a PCIe NVMe
not possible
not for a 2 TB NVME. Still spendy
Any links @ Vintage?
I read up on your suggestion about 10 dollars more is much worth it
both are good but tbh
the 970 plus is 100% worth $20 more
better NAND by a lot (mlc vs tlc) and a better controller as well
Fantastic. That's what I'm getting then. Thank you
np!!!
im not saying sabrent is bad, im just saying id spend the extra $40 in total and get a super good drive
i predict 100% that the price of that drive is going to go up soon
because its too good of a deal for what youre getting
For future knowledge, can I also ask a simple break down in order which one is better with the memory component? Like you said MLC>TLC And I think there's a QLC
Does it go like MLC>TLC>QLC?
the lower the better
yep
and slc is god tier
but you will never get a slc ssd under like $2k

Bruh lol
Got it. Keeping that for safe keeping. Good knowledge. Thanks again!
And I follow you up on that. Weighing the $40 and seeing if it's worth it
Thank you again!
I've said that a bit but yeah lol
should i upgrade my 480gb kingston ssd to nvme?
is it an a400
lol
a400 is so bad
ya
@untold grove what is a good 1tb ssd for under 130 sata or m.2 for game storage
Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 Internal SSD High Performance Solid State Drive (SB-ROCKET-1TB) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LGF54XR/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_fabc_N-i9Fb1AM99NE
This one?
is D Blue 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD - SATA III M.2 2280 Solid State Drive - WDS500G2B0B compatible with an Acer Aspire 3 model 315-21 laptop?
No, you need a 2.5" sata drive for that looks like
Hm, it wasn't listed on their website
I looked at a couple different versions of that model too
It's probably a safe bet that's it's SATA and not NVME
I know. The acer website is very unhelpful. The manual has of use in it.
ahhhh
!thanks for following up appreciated
will a SATA drive work with NVME?
Yes, it will work in an M.2 slot
it's a cheap computer, so don't want to put a lot of $ into it
unfortunately not, I downloaded from Acer sometime ago. Don't remember the exact link. the laptop is an Acer Aspire 3 model 315-21-95K
the manual didn't have anything in it about an M.2 drive slot that I could find
FOund it I think
thanks anyway for the offer. I'll probably just order a SATA version
Reading it now lol
funny!
yeah, not a professional writing job. very incomplete
I've had the back off, so I know it has an M.2 slot
sata then
👍
@untold grove got heatsink, will install soon, and get back with cdm results
do I get this for a game drive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LGF54XR/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_fabc_N-i9Fb1AM99NE or should I get an easystore 8tb and shuck it for the drive?
uuh is that a new disk?
delete all partitions on the drive
Boot from UEFI instead of legacy?
easystore imo
no its a partition error
Ah
Yeah that might be the option then I have a reason to do more cable management and have 8 times the storage for 10 dollars more
I am assuming you just throw away the case that the hdd is in
I tried @untold grove
Still not working
I went ahead and bought an ssd but I need something in the meantime..
show me the screen
Is western digital a good ssd brand, or should I go with Samsung evo
Hey @untold grove so I ordered a ssd, do you think it will work if I try on the new ssd?
can you show me the screen
I quit bruh
thats a you problem then
Lol basically my hard drive wasn’t being deleted and unallocated space
It said it has unacclocated space and everything was free, but I couldn’t install windows onto it, so do u think the ssd will work
you deleted the partitions instead of formatting?
I tried deleting and formatting
@kind sierra helped me convert to gtp didn’t work
So I ordered a 970 evo, will it fix my problem and let me game again?
@untold grove
does the drive show up as unallocated?
Yea
itll work with ssd but thats odd
there is no samsung tax
Samsung tax = paying too much for what you get when you buy a 970
Oh really?
yeah theyre the same
and even for a bit more you get better nand and a nicer controller
Ah so it's $10 more now instead of $50
very worth the extra 10
hey i need a hdd... at least 2tb. maybe 4 depending on price. suggestions? speed does not matter as I would have my m.2 boot and have this hdd just store... i can do that right?
ill do the 4tb 5400 rpm. speed doesnt matter cause i can do the booting with the ssd right
thanks lili
❤️
and correct, this would just be like a big usb drive basically
fill it with whatever
would i set that up in BIOS or does m.2 naturally take priorityover hdd
whatever has windows on it will have boot priority
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P5QFRGJ? Found this 512gb drive that looks to be pretty nice, tlc, Phison E12, dram, no hmb. Only at $55. ThoughI I’m a little skeptical abt it bc of the price. Idk if the manufacturers have changed controllers or anything so is there anything wrong with this?
let me see

id say
worth to pay more for evo/sn750
anyone can make ssds, and if you rly want to save
itll work fine
like gonestly
honestly
i dont see anything making me think its bad
its just a rebrand
like the rocket
hmmm I see, so a rebrand, I’ll think it through but I might just end up getting the evo ig
well uh thank you (:
Guys whats a better replacement for Samsung 860 EVO?
overkill for most people
More than the boards the cpu doesn’t support it yet
I'm emphasizing the boards because Z490 claims pcie 4.0 with 11th gen, so that's why I had the "yet"
So, I should be getting most of my parts sometime this week and I was wondering how I would be able to transfer just some files I need from the old pc to the new one. Roughly ~120GB of photos and other stuff. Is it safe to just put my old drive in the new one or do I need to buy an external hard drive?
Hey can anyone help me choose what hdd I should get
Can u just @open gust when you guys can help me thx
@untold grove dude is asking about a hdd
@open gust I believe that they would say either a Western Digital or Toshiba
That is what I think they would say could be wrong
this mfer asked me four different times
i said toshiba or wd
and he KEEPS ASKING
@open gust stop asking i already told you
my bad didnt know
hey all. any recommendations for a NAS that can also be directly attached to a pc? Other computers on the network would connect via NAS, but one machine should connect via USB/thunderbolt
why would you want this?
huge photo library that I need to be able to edit photos from one machine, and have access to from others
photos are fine over network
answer is you cannot btw
synology makes the best nas hardware, tell me what kind of space you need and ill point you in the right direction
4bay so i can do raid 5 or 10
and 16tb
does that not have direct access from a PC and over network?
yeah, that price is high...i've seen it for 700 elsewhere
i have a USG-3P router and US-8-150W switch
ok, well my switch is 10 Gbps so I can run a nas with that speed
so then what do you recommend? I have *nix boxes and windows boxes
thats what id do
as i said
if you want a prebuilt
synology is amazing
you shucking?
what does that mean?
the drives
still don't understand
basically
for nas drives
you either pay 400 for a 12tb drive or pay 200 for an easystore, take it apart, and get the same drive
Buy Synology DiskStation DS1621+ 6-Bay NAS Enclosure featuring 6 x 3.5"/2.5" SATA HDD/SSD Drive Bays, 2.2 GHz AMD Ryzen V1500B Quad-Core, 4GB of DDR4 ECC RAM, 4 x Gigabit Ethernet Ports, 3 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A | 2 x eSATA, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, Hybrid, and JBOD, Sequential Writes up to 2300 MB/s, AES-NI Hardware Encryption Engine, M.2 2280 SSD ...
this is a great box here
but no 10gbe
Buy Synology DiskStation DS1817 8-Bay NAS Enclosure featuring 8 x 3.5"/2.5" SATA Drive Bays, 1.7 GHz Alpine AL-314 Quad-Core, 4GB of DDR3L RAM, 2 x 10GbE Ports | 2 x 1GbE Ports, 2 x USB 3.0 Ports | 2 x eSATA Ports, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and JBOD, Up to 1577 MB/s Sequential Writes, Hardware Encryption Engine, Up to 2048 Local User Accounts, Synolo...
this does 10gbe but worse cpu (less fun stuff to run on the nas)
I don't know what I would run on the nas, really I just need it for accessible storage and editing photos on the nas
so sounds like I need a 10gbps box, maybe 4bay
just stuff like backups/synology's photo organizer
oh i see
why is this?
5 drives is the best for raid 5
cache
throw a nvme drive in there and anything u write will max connection no issue
i have 8tb nvme for my array
oh so it will cache in the m2 while the platters catchup?
cool, thanks for the info
:))
and @red jay qnap's os has so many security holes its really not worth putting anything even semi important on
Hello
So I have a question
Would it be cheaper to have a 240 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD vs just a 1 TB SSD?
SN750?
yes
860 is good, I have two of them
nice
❤️ 860 EVOs❤️
although at this point m.2 is becoming a lot more affordable than it used to be
i wanna get my 3070 so i can test what my speeds are like
Anyone able to help me set up my storage for my m.2 my bios won’t pick it up and it won’t pick my hdd up
What motherboard, what M.2 and what SSD?
@dusk turtle could you come to one of vc so I can explain I struggle to type
No mic lol. Cats ate my boom for my headset -_-
Ooof I have a Asus b450 f mb with a wd green m.2 1
Hdd and 1 ssd and only ssd is being picked up
Ok
I think I know what's going on but need to check
Ok lol
Is your M.2 in the top or bottom slot?
Yeah, I can't see anything about port disabling for the M.2 port. Bios went back to default settings, what exactly happened? Update BIOS? SOmething crashed?
It bsod and rest it self
oof
That's not good
I would say this
take out the M.2 drive and see if the others show up
It may have failed keeping the others from showing in BIOS
I have and only ssd show up
Ok two secs
👍
I see both is there something I have got to enable for m.2
Ok
If still problems, either drive died or motherboard controller died
I hope neither as there all new
It happens
The m.2 has power as it is warm lol
not showing though?
No lol
Can you vc and I’ll explain and you type.
BUt, it honestly could be the board too since the 1/2 ports don't work with it
There's no way to tell without another drive
Because I can explain what happens properly if you can
I mean like what causes the system to be like this
I have issues with my hands I’m struggling lol
Most likely the M.2 drive failed and took out part of the controller with it
WD green drives are low quality
Honestly, the regular SSD you have on a Sata cable is just as fast
Sata M.2 should be avoided
The issues is I’ve lost some footage of people braking Into my house lol
Well, there's no way to recover that drive that I know of if your information is on it.
If it won't show in the BIOS, it's probably ded
Oooof
Nope
Good
so i got a samsung m.2 so i used the samsung software to transfer the os and stuff can i format the old drive?
Can you boot from the new drive?
I would try that first before you format the old one
yeah make sure the clone worked before wiping lul
ooh you got techie
Should I get a 1tb ssd or 500gb ssd and a hdd
500gb ssd/2tb-4tb hdd
Ok
avoid seagate
What’s a good hdd with a reasonable price
Ok
or Seagate Barracuda 2tb
Whats wrong with seagate?
bad drives, cmr, high failure rate
to put it super simple, its like a really nice tlc ssd vs a really bad qlc ssd
both work, but one works worse and for not nearly as long
the wd blue is a much better dirve
drive
cmr, low fail rate, reliable
What about the seagate drives causes them to fail more often?
just poorer qc in general
so with drives, its not just capacity
capacity is nice
but its sku
exos are their enterprise drives
i would trust any company's enterprise drives
what about WDs?
now thats tricky
i like wd a lot
but i feel like the excel more in the prosumer space
fantastic for nas, big storage
would I run an enterprise array on WD drives? yes. Would I maybe run one more backup per week than normal? Also yes.
enterprise drives are often categorized differently from nas drives due to rpm and cache, as well as firmware
while also getting the best binned platters
for example wd purples and seagate skyhawk(?) drives are literally just nas drives
but they will not stop and try to correct a sector that isnt written properly
because they are for cctv usage
and that means constant writes
so going back to enterprise drives it depends what you put them in
it would need to be enterprise grade hardware for me to trust them over nas drives
nas drives are generally 5400rpm which means less vibration and less heat/noise output
I would want a chassis that can somewhat migitate extra vibration and heat if I were running an enterprise array
imo the enterprise drives are mostly pointless but they are really nice to have and I would use a seagate exos gladly
Thank you for the information, do you possibly know any youtubers that go into detail about drives and their technologies so i could learn more?
honestly not too many that arent shills
i try to be objective
the reason why i bash seagate so much is because their consumer grade offerings are poor compared to wd/toshiba
and this server is consumer grade for the most part
Is there any topics i should atleast google to get a better understanding of drives?
id do smr vs cmr
thats a really good stepping stone into learning more about mechanical drives
Thank you!
and from there
look up what models from which makers are smr vs cmr
and youll see why i tell people to avoid seagates
hehe
So, SMR bad, CMR good?
basically yes
so The WD RZ drives are good, but their AZ are bad, I haven't done much looking but is there a $60 2TB 7200RPM CMR WD drive?
no those would be wd black
So the $100 drives
So its pretty much the better choice
yeah 3 bit mlc is just what samsung calls their highest binned tlc
its god tier tlc
with insane endurance
like tbh its close to mld
mlc
but technically mlc
the m just means multi
so i can say 4 bit mlc and be talking qlc

I dont like that, they should all use the same naming convention
it is the sketchiest thing samsung does by far
like i sort of get it cause the tlc theyre putting into the 980 pro is god tier and ppl see tlc and think meh
is there something missing, or is the SN850 a better performer than the 980Pro, i dont know anything about endurance though.
wait
tbh
drive sizes
samsung stuff goes for so long
theres rated endurance and actual endurance
manufacturer tbw is just like
"this is how long we rate it to go for"
like dealership warranties when u get a car
like rope capacity
yeah basically
for example i had a samsung drive
i think it was a 970/960
3.5pbw
thats a lot
was rated for 600tb
so, what do you do that needs so much writing endurance?
cache
Makes sense
What would be another good search to learn more? and how important is the chipset on SSDs.
well theres the one ssd tier list
the ltt one?
Welcome to the SSD tier list. SSD or Solid State Drive is a storage device containing non-volatile flash memory, used in place of hard drive because of its much greater speed. Unlike a hard drive, a solid state drive doesnt have any moving parts. It has two main components - A flash controller an...
yep
just ignore adata
whats up with them?
sketchy as hell and specs dont tell the full story
imo i buy samsung, sabrent, kioxia, or corsair ssds
hp/inland are also fine, as well as hynix and seagate
a lot of my ssds are seagate
Isnt there some sort of microwave HDD thing? is that HAMR?
irrelevant lul
Why so? outdated or not nescessary?
both
lol
does anyone know how to safely transfer an entirety of an OS hdd drive to an ssd?
ive been racking my head around this for months and i still havent been able to figure it out
uh either mushkin or seagate im pretty sure
since i have 3 1tb ssds
2 mushkin 1 seagate
ah ok sweet
i did not know that
(i actually dont have my seagate ssd connected to any sata port yet lol)
No worries but grab their software
alright thx
YW
If I have xbox games installed on it, it would't like corrupt or anything right?
If they is the same one it wont currupt right?
Right
https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16820226902
Higher tier 2tb PCIE ssd for $200, dram and Micron TLC, 1300TBW, uses the SMI SM2262EN controller
oo nice
honestly not a bad drive
or a bad price
idk about how the nand is binned but
im sure its alr
The 12tb easystore is now only 190 that is very tempting
And the 8tb is now at 200 again so 12tb is now cheaper than the 8tb that is very very tempting
Oh the 8tb was showing 200 for some reason now it is back to 140
@untold grove out of curiosity, how large (in terms of 3.5in bays) are your typical NASes?
i use 24 bay jbods
hm interesting
asked because of the Meshify 2 XL, which can have 18 3.5in bays in the case
no rackmount
i love this
My nas itself is tempermental
and the hard drives in it are even more so
drive is perfectly accessible directly from windows xp still havent gone to the raid nas yet
so while yes you can access the drive locally
you cant access it from the network just randomly
im not sure if this is just XP being XP or what
so the OS is picky and so are the Drives
If i bump the thing the drives come unplugged making the drives themselves pucky
*picky
and then once i fix that then the OS has a fit
this is really annoying
ugggh
i swear this thing is more picky then a toddler wanting a specific food
and its soooo annoying
every time i see that error come up i swear to god my heart skips a beat or two, since this NAS has no redundancy and the RAID 6 NAS still hasnt came online due to shipping delays, so i still cant end the service of the XP NAS
idk what i did to XP to make it this picky but i hate it
it will probally end up coming back on in like a hour tho like usual so i guess i will wait
its been a over a hour now still not back
wtffff
its not a hardware issue since the contents are fully readable locally
almost like its held together with tape or smth
My HDD says that it is corrupted, and that i should change it for a new one, is there a way to fix it? Or I should really purchase a new one, because right now money is pretty tight for me
No its held together with prayers
cant fix a hdd
wgat did it say exactly
if your feeling gheeto you could try the freezer but that wont fix corruption
@untold grove it literally said i should replace it, i mean im still using it, but it crashed once and i lost all my games, had to reinstall them again
id replace it tbh
you can run a SMART test on it
but if the bios is telling you its bad
its probs very bad lol
Your hard drive sounds like its being held together by prayers to
I have fat fingers and don't really want to add a m.2 nvme drive down the road, I was thinking about just getting two for my new build. I know 2 970 pro's/wd750s would work or should I get at least one that is pcie4.0?
depends how much u want that speed lol
I suppose. With tariffs, I don't think they will be coming down in price anytime soon.
Oh dang. I didn't even think about a sabrent. Some quick reading they seem like good drives. I've been a samsung sata guy my entire life, but for $50 more a stick, that is doable.
im 100% in it for samsung
all the time
so something to keep in mind
the 970 pro is mlc
like actual mlc
that thing will last u a w h i l e
I’m sn750 bc I thought it was faster then Samsung
that screenshot is clearly rocket 4 plus with those write speeds >:P
980 pro only rated for 5000mb/s write
i never said it wasnt
it 100% is lol
im just saying those are the two fastest ssds you can get rn
I don't like lumping 980 pro and rocket 4 plus together
one is 7000/5000
the other is 7000/6850
yes
if they want endurance
but SPEEEEED
i like the 970 pro more than the 980 pro
I like rocket 4 plus over all of em >:D
tfw my nvme drives do like 2000/1500
tfw my nvme drives do like 3000/1000
why
lmao joke cause smr has fine read and ABYSMAL writes
heh
its why theyre marketed as archival drives
can get data off but its a pain to get data o
n
i kind of want this drive
it looks fun
ceramic pc
i wouldnt mind a mp34
also, that's basically a MP34, but with Micron instead of Toshiba nand
i just cant rly tell people to get something i havent personally used
oh wait looking at the wrong one
C440 is Toshiba nand
it's also the slower "wave" of pcie 4.0 drives
5000/4400
yeah
also the controller is e16 and not e12
its not fast and it costs more than the rocket
lol
but ceramic
@untold grove I looked at the wrong row >:P
rocket 4 plus included heatsink prob way better
but its not ceramic
and iirc its just a sticker
for the 4.0 plus
actually looks like a smal copper piece
I'd go SN850 over 4 plus/980 Pro
Defragging is the HDD equivalent of spring cleaning change my mind
Uuh
Not really...
Defragging is like giving a 10 year old lambo its first tuneup
Like its a dirty mess, and then it gets tuned up then its fast as hell
And i am talking this lambo is held together by tape
yeah
spring cleaning is organizing files
but not too much
defrag is just a tuneup
wait random thought wait happens if something like a raid array gets fragmented
since writing to RAID 5-6 is slow as hell what would one do if it did get fragmented?
or is there some fancy software that keeps things from getting fragmented in the first place?
you defrag it
yea but wouldent that be slow as hell due to the speed that raid 5-6 writes at?
i read somewhere that raid 5-6 has a x8 write slowdown
it takes a while
ok well out of necessity i am going to be getting a SSD boot drive for this New Raid 6 NAS
you said something about a cache before, for a RAID array? would a
ADATA Ultimate Series: SU630 240GB SSD be ok for one?
adata bad
well im broke so shush
budget?
like at this point im running on whatever i can find laying around in my room
so like 40$ max and 10$ of that has to be spent on a sata cable and hard drive mount thing
mlc ssd
7200RPM? People be pepeg
iirc ebay autofills it
Do they? I've never had to sell anything, I'd just assumed the titles were always seller-created
On Ali they have “king spec” drives lol
theyre ehh
4plus is on average worse then 850
https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/9698/sabrent-rocket-4-plus-1tb-2-nvme-ssd/index.html
Decided to just get a 980 pro. Had some best buy bucks from Christmas.
How good are WD Blacks? Got a chance to buy a few 2TB ones on the cheap and wondering if they are worth it
Which one? SN750 is pretty good
P10 I believe
i know of a p1, p2, and p5
ohh, its an HDD
@heavy dagger you mean this?
i think these are only 5400 rpm
also its an external usb drive
so pretty good for what it is, but dont buy it for a desktop pc
Ohh yeah those guys.
yeah
NOt sure it really matters for a console though?
I didn't realize that they were externals.
Yeah, I wouldn't for a PC unless it's a dump and store for data
Hmm the price is great but might have to pass up. Don't think I have a use
just because its on sale doesnt mean the price is good
I really don't need storage for my PS4 cause I don't use it lol
the 90 dollar MSRP is pretty steep
oh im seeing em on sale for 65, but hey, 35 is pretty good
Any good 500gb nvme?
wd blue sn550 or crucial p2 for price . wd sn750 is more performance
If you are just going to be shoving stuff onto it and not actively moving stuff all the time, I'd back the sn550 seeing as how I've got two of them in an array for my games, haven't had any major issues or major speed drops
MP34 is usually best value
Got the sn750 500gb 43$ @loud estuary
I ordered it from walmart because of my promo code, got 25$ off
That one is actually great for that price
Please hold while I delete the evd for my brainfart
luckily I had the promo code from walmart cause they still haven’t shipped my ps5 since 12/17 and delivery is 01/12
So they gave me a promo code for my Patience
MP34 would likely still be cheaper if you could still use the code, but if you can only use that promo on the sn750 they have very similar specs
Hello, my Samsung evo 970 m.2 ssd 1tb arrived yesterday and I used Samsungs migration software to convert my storage from my old hard drive into the new ssd, according to the software this included windows. After it was transferred I tried to use it as my boot drive (took out the original hard drive) and found that I got passed the access bios screen, and the windows icon is there for a second and then my monitors go to sleep mode indicating that my computer is either asleep or not working. Should I try using the software again? Should I use a different software? Let me know please
try going into BIOS and manually setting the boot drive
I've tried that as well... same issue
I think ima try the migration tool later today and if that doesnt work than we'll see
I have a bit extra money so should I get 1tb ssd with a 2tb hdd instead of 500gb ssd with a 2tb hdd
if you are gaming then go with a 1tb ssd
you’ll appreciate the extra space for other stuff too
Ok
Hello everyone! I am trying to set up an in home "cloud" if you will. I just want a shared drive for my wife and I to be able to drag and drop pictures onto from our laptops or iphones to be able to free up space.
Ideally it would be 8TB total with 4TB to drop into and then the other 4TB would be a second hard drive to mirror the first in case it fails. I have heard a lot of bad things about the WD MyCloud.
@untold grove
cheap option is synology 2 bay nas
they have the best software
@blazing tangle https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/feature/moments
Synology Moments - Back up your private personal photos to Synology Moments, and group them into different topics with image and facial recognition technique powered by deep learning, thus making it easier for you to search, share, and look back every special moment!
@untold grove Okay, so once I buy that two bay nas, then what do I do? I have to purchase two matching hard drives from WD/Seagate/etc?
yep
from wd
and if you plan on storing more than just photos id get a bigger nas
whats the budget for this?
$300-400?
@untold grove Okay, so I buy the Synology 2 bay, I buy two WD Red 4TB drives, I put the drives inside the Synology. Then what happens?
@untold grove Okay, so the Synology will do everything and explain what I need to do?
anything their documentation doesnt explain youll find easily on youtube yes
@untold grove And the WD red drives is the way to go?
yes but be very careful
i never buy below 8tb personally
bad value under that
8tb is like 140 per drive
and theres a chance youll get smr drives if you arent careful with the wd reds
would the toshiba x300 work for this? or no
@untold grove Okay sure, I will upgrade to 8TB each then. What are smr drives? Last question, I have a Netgear Nighthawk Mesh wifi system in my home. Every satellite has an ethernet input. Can I use one of the satellites for this?
technically yes, but i wouldnt
and smr = really bad for nas
to put it in very simple terms hehe
@untold grove How do I avoid this "smr" you speak of? lol
when u buy drives, itll show the model numer
number
if you get drives from where i tell you to
youre fine
its under 8tb where u have to worry on wd drives
anything 8tb or above is perfection
yeah thatll be alright
@untold grove You would rather the $400 one I am guessing? Its so much money just for that with no drives 😦
@untold grove And then where do I get the drives?
@untold grove Those are external hard drives? Do I buy external or internal?
@untold grove Oh lord, what kind of drives are in there?
