like is it only for moving files and stuff/
or is there use in like gaming and stuff
idk if i make sense lol
maybe what i meant is if theres gaming benefit with the rocket q4
Load times basically are all within margin of error once you get to SATA SSDs
not even NVMe
Games can't really take the advantages of faster drives for load times yet
ok cuz i wanna build a pc thats mainly for game
any good ssd in term of price and storage?
also, do you know how they make the new gen console loads so quick? is it their custom ssd or?
MP34
isnt taht a gun???
@patent oasis it's directio or whatever it's called, no implementations on PC yet, it uses GPU power to compress and decompress files for faster load times
Team MP34 is the best value SSD for 1tb, 107usd
@minor sun alright thx man imma check em out, saving me money dude thx again
:)
Which 500gb m.2 nvme ssd is better for bootdrive? Samsung 970 evo, samsung 970 evo plus, wd black sn750? Any other recommend?
I already have a Corsair mp600 for other storage
you are aware that the mp600 beats the snot out of the others right? @round shoal
Yah. But that's 2tb. I am thinking to have another m.2 nvme ssd just for OS.
depending on needs, you could just partition of a section
ofc, if you have the throughput need of the mp600, a seperate drive can make sense
This?
Ye
your thoughts on kingston a2000 500gb nvme?
not the best but pretty inexpensive and not bad
So I bought a sn750 from Newegg about 2 weeks ago and it arrived yesterday, it shipped from the east coat and I live in the west so I understand the delay. But when the product arrived yesterday the box and the plastic holder thing looked bent and crooked. I’m not sure if the actual sn750 is damaged but idk how to check since I don’t have a pc yet. Is there anything wrong with it? How can I check without a pc
the box was mostly open when it came
sn750 doesn’t seem to look extremely bent to me but there’s a slight curve
@zenith prawn have a talk with @teal sequoia and show them that
send them a message
dm?
great thanks
best of luck :)
apparently my mom already called customer support so they said I could get it replaced lol
Hm, @heady raven, opening up my old laptop to clean it up before I try to use it again, do you know what this silver foil/sheet covering the hdd is for, and if I should take it off?
NVM figured it out, it held the hdd in the mount thing
aye, generally just a protective layer
Well, my pny sata ssd took a big crap, i go plug it in and turn on my pc and it apparently shorted and melted my psu wires and then the psu shut off, this all happened within 2-3 seconds. tested psu voltages and everything is normal, the pc was a server pc i built. i'm not sure this is a psu issue as it works fine but one of the wires is severely melted. i'm most likely gonna contact pny about this. what would you do in this situation.
Lol first mistake was buying pny
Hey guys I have a question. I'm looking to get an ssd just to put my boot drive onto. My mobo has an open m.2 slot and a couple open sata3 slots. Any recommendations?
500gb samsung 970 EVO vs 1TB SK Hynix S31 for an Adobe Suite build?
@exotic oasis Samsung 970 evo is only $60 rn
for 1TB?
I dont know why but my brand freaking new like 3 month old 2tb hdd is already getting the drive fail warnings
I dont really care that much since I just put steam games on there
laughs in $100 970 evo
500gb
seagate?
so even tho its only for the boot drive i should go for an m.2?
Yes
NVME would be best
Fun Fact: No difference in game or load times between SSD and NVME
So, really doesn't matter
Unless you're doing network transfers or large file transfers a lot, either is fine
yeah i literally only plan on getting it for my boot drive and /maybe/ one game but ill probably just leave all my games on the normal hdd until i can get a beefy ssd to put them all on
Well, the point is, an SSD or NVME will be the same load times and boot speed
So if an SSD is cheaper, feel free to grab one
hi guys, just a quick question. like few hours ago my HDD disconnected, tried the same sata cable with another ssd and hdd, and cable works just fine. but cannot see my hdd anymore on windows, bios or in data manage section. i think its pretty much dead but wanted to ask about that, if its possible to recover the data atleast? like im not the pro of this thing but is it fixable?
Is it better to build a separate own media server or just plug a bunch of external hdds/ssds to ur computer for a plex media server? Thanks
better for separate
also better to not use plex imo
plex is practical if you need remote access via a limited bandwidth connection
plex is bad because it sucks
jellyfin is better because it does not suck
plex relies on their servers for login
it also does a bunch of other stuff and has ads for tidal
as well as an (imo) worse ui
less secure with more tracking and does the same thing and you need to pay for transcode
and imo performs worse too
so to answer this, it depends what performance you want and if you plan to direct play or to transcode. im happy to walk you through it here
hey guys I recently ran out of storage on my 1TB 970evo plus, and want to buy a 2tb gen4 nvme to upgrade to. Is it possible to move everything over to the faster drive without needing to reinstall everything? and if I choose to just boot that new ssd like a new pc, I heard that windows keys are "tied to the motherboard"? does that mean I can just install a new os on that drive and windows will just know it's mine?
real question here is, does having the gen4 ssd for the OS even matter? will OS even take advantage of those extra speeds? or just use the gen4 SSD as a secondary drive for the applications that need/can make better use of it
yes youll be fine
os will not rly benefit from gen4 speeds because atm almost nothing the average consumer does actually benefits from that speed
Hi, I have one question. If I swap my hard drive with ssd and clone my hard drive to this ssd, will licensed programs like Word 2016 and OS Windows 10 home work?
yes
as long as you clone it properly
@untold grove I thought people used Plex more so I just put Plex here, I actually do use Jellyfin cuz open source tends to be more fun to mess around. The media is just a lot of anime, a bunch of movies, and some family media. Tbh I want the best performance and transcoding because some devices in my family are on the older side so they might not support 10bit or sth
depends then, imo plex is ass and shouldnt be used lol
but
generally id say you want a box that does hw transcode
so for cheap youll want an intel machine
do you have a nas or looking to build one?
I'm looking to build one, it seems to be the cheaper option
And I might be considering turning my current PC into the NAS once I get a new PC
specs of current pc?
i5-9400f 1660 16gigs of ram
How much data as in like how much disk space I will be putting in?
sure lets go with that
Prolly 4-5 4tb hdds,
you have the drives already?
Ive only got 1 hdd currently but I have a lot of stuff that I want to move from the cloud services to it when I have it built and ready
I'm still looking into what kind of drives I should get
My current one is a seagate barracuda
not seagate
oh lmao rip
so you have stuff on gdrive and want to move to local basically
Yes, and a couple external hdds which is like 24/7 plugged into my PC
Wait let me take a look
and what kind of raid are you planning on running
I think it's 2 WD External 1TB and a Seagate passport 2tb
ok so first off
tyvm ^-^
I guess my friends are pretty fake then lmao
They said seagate was like the best or sth when I had no clue about anything
and np man, if youre looking for a solid gen4 2tb may i recommend https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TN1MNJ4, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P2CG4JK/, or https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SNGBW84
the corsair one has insane tbw rating iirc
the rocket plus absolutely screams at 7gb/s though
my condolences
some people think theyre fine
i personally try for wd when i help out new hoarders lol
mostly because easystore
for a nas build you dont really need all that power bte
btw
you can run a fantastic nas off of like
an i3 and 16gb
i wouldnt go below 16gb ram though, but you can get stuff done on 8
Is the GPU useful for something like nvenc hardware encoding?
yes but it depends how many users
Or should I stick to just intel quick sync or sth
Probably 4-5
and will it be local or over internet
honestly i serve up 10 users with a 1050ti
but i limit transcode to just me and wifey
quicksync will be fine imo
Over internet, currently I'm the only one using my PC as a small nas and portforwarding
what i used to do was actually use a nuc to host the media server
worked wonders
and i c
what are you running for the nas right now
?
I only really do anime and sometimes when I need to grab data off my computer for schoolwork
i meant more like
Oh the pc?
you just using windows or do you have a nas focused os goin
no problem!
and i see
so looking to get a new build going then?
and hoping to whitebox it basically
Yea basically that
I'm hoping to get it under 650
drives included?
I mean, how much would the drives go over?
depends how much storage u want
Um if possible I want at least 16tb, but if including the drive it's difficult to keep it under 650, 1000 is the hard limit
raw or?
Raw as in including loss from raid? Then yea
Yes it seems like the best option
you need to 100%
I was reading into raid and it seems like raid 5 is the best option without huge loss but still has nice features?
raid 5 is alright yeah
but ideally we're gonna be doing unraid since its pretty easy for beginners
which does its own thing
how many vms are you planning on running?
Sorry I'm still relatively new to this, what do VMs do?
virtual machines
basically you can run say uhhhh
a 1 core 2gb ram vm that just runs pihole
and itll do network wide adblocking
as a simple example
Hm I guess around 2? I'm still not really sure on what that is, I'll read up on it
thx
theyre a lot of fun lol
half the fun of a nas tbh
ok so
around 16tb storage right?
you want warranties on the drives or are u chill with uh
less warranty
I don't really mind about that
ok well my friend made a nice site to help ya out then
all these drives are white label WD Red drives
aka the perfect nas drives
as for the nas build itself, its been a while since i just built a simple nas lol
Wait they're single drives?
yep
Damn they go up pretty high
yea lol
i mostly use 3-8tb drives
have some 10 tho
for the nas build itself
you chill with used?
Definitely
you can upgrade that ram/get that cpu to be an 8 threaded one
old xeons r cheap
and also good
dont pay the consumer tax most of the time
99% of my infrastructure is hosted on xeon stuff lol
Would there be a difference if I just use my current CPU in case I get my new PC first? i5 9400f in case u forgot
I was thinking if xeon has some special features over normal consumer cpus
not for this workload
the only thing is depending on what os youre running
some consumer stuff doesnt like esxi/truenas
but i think youd be best running unraid tbh
and unraid works alright on everything
however truenas is free, unraid is not
unraid is less complex and more beginner friendly with data protection and all
but
not free
Thanks a lot, I'll keep that in mind
unraid does fake raid which is good and bad
good cause it means you can recover from drive failure way easier
bad cause its slower
to do?
Or do nas software just allow me to access the files on the road?
so thats where like
prebuilts kick ass
you dont buy synology for the hardware
but oh my god
the software is chefs kiss
if you can set up a nextcloud instance thats a good option
opening ports in your home network is always kinda

Ill mess around with it and I'll probably find a solution
No I mean messing around with nextcloud
yeah id do that
nextcloud is fun
honestly what i do is i just vpn back into home network when i need something
Especially when I've already got a port open for minecraft with some of my friends
or ill just rdp in and throw whatever i need onto my cdn
Thanks a lot for ur help again, have a great day!
:)
How big of a hard drive do I need to download over 300 games off of my Steam Library?
depends what games
40 GB average size x 300 games = 12 TB
40 gb is a LOT. that's only the biggest games... considering the fact that most games on steam like among us, cs:go, RL, etc etc etc, and only the few big ones being cyberpunk, gta, cod, I think a 6-8 tb hdd would suffice
but tbh
do you rlly need to have all ur games downloaded at once @nimble robin ?
it was sort of a joke question
@untold grove was saying that she was waiting for someone to say something in #storage-devices in a convo we had earlier
I humored her
hehe
is wd mybook a good storage for backup?
@round shoal have had problems with WD external drives... any seagates that would work?
seagate backup plus hub desktop. more expensive than wd one
I BEAT MINECRAFT IN 69 SECONDS
Whatever u say bro
its alr
wd 3.5 in externals kick ass
never recommend non wd 3.5 in
they use wd red drives
Does it matter which sata port is used?
I have one hard drive to install
I don't know if there is a specific one I need to put into
Thanks
Hello folks, I'm searching for a 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive for my build, and keep finding drives that are NAS, Enterprise, or Data Center. Are any of those good to use for a home computer? Thank you, I appreciate the help!
What size?
I mean, a NAS drive would be just fine
Probably better than a desktop drive since they're designed to be on for long periods of time
Thank you for responding, much appreciated
Sorry for that double post
And getting this as a desktop backup: https://www.newegg.com/black-seagate-backup-plus-hub-8tb/p/N82E16822179033?Item=N82E16822179033&nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=AFC-RAN-COM&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-PCPartPicker&AFFID=2558510&AFFNAME=PCPartPicker&ACRID=1&ASID=https%3A%2F%2Fpcpartpicker.com%2F&ranMID=44583&ranEAID=2558510&ranSiteID=8BacdVP0GFs-KVDncj75_fRs79Yd5Ux.Lw
I have no experience with the ironwolf drives
Inuse an 8 tb seagate external
And a 6 tb Hitachi internal
I have a 120 gb segate external from 2003 still chugging
I read a few reviews about the ironwolf drive that gave me pause
Hitachi is a bit pricey for 8TB, but I guess its for a reason
Is the Hitachi drive you have an HGST?
seagate nas drives are meh
and dont get that external its hot ass
smr drive inside
i mean everything seagate makes is hot ass but that especially
get two of these and shuck one of them
they use wd red drives but whitelabeled
Thank you for your recommendations! I was told 12TB drives are usually better quality, what do you think?
thats also true
hgst drives are god tier but also you cant get them new anymore
so i dont rly reccomend
id never trust a seagate nas tbh
If I have my os in an ssd, will my downloads folder always be in that ssd or can I make downloads be in my hdd
it will always be in your ssd then
Damn. That sucks
I just want my os in my ssd for the faster speeds but everything else on my hdd. It’s a little inconvenient not being able to use the downloads folder
but still ur os will boot up faster with an ssd from my knowlede
that is wrong
you can change it easily
it will be in ur ssd but u can change it never said u cantr
just dont give advice if you dont know the answer tbh
just try to verify what ur telling people with a google search and it helps everyone out :))
ik for opera you can change the downloads location. Source: Opera user
not that you'd do that
2 things
1: opera is complete and total ass
and 2: this changes downloads folder on a OS level
opera and brave are both ass
youre switching from bad to bad in that situation
their vpn is literal spyware
and all the data collection it does gets sent back to their owners, some chinese firm
same with brave, data goes to them, and who knows when theyll be bought
you can trust browsers like iridium
or tweaked ff
or just normal chrome
google keeps personally identifying data anonymous
they just sell aggregate numbers
I noticed the HGST drives aren't as available as others. I'm guessing Hitachi quit making them?
they got bought and merged into WD
they still make wd's enterprise drives and a lot of the dna went into the red line
you can get a new 3TB HGST ALA640 on ebay for like 45
Interesting.
"new"
Anyone have any thoughts on Toshiba internal HDD drives?
when i first got them, they each only had 2 power ons
sassy you can reset that count
well, they're still running fine regardless
packaged well, perfect physical condition, no issues
im sure lol
im just saying as someone who used to do the same thing
prolly not actually new
they do be zoomin in raid 0 doe
lmao what are u doin to those poor babies
hehehe true
Does anyone know if that Western Digital 1tb SSD is still on sale?
mmhmmm
also sassy FWIW those drives failed like crazy when we deployed them
almost as bad as the great adata fiasco
omg thats hilarious
i scrolled down
i love these guys
i always told ppl to go to them
cause they sent me a nice tin of cookies every month
TLC or bust
and cheap
I mean, for the everyday user for OS and game loading etc, not gonna notice it
It's more the endurance that's poop
at least its better than the 660p
Can confirm
anyone know if you can remove an m.2 heatsink, specifically the VPN100 heatsink, the motherboard i’m getting has an m.2 cover and i don’t think it’ll fit underneath
Likely yes
This post says yes
But it might be a PITA to scrape off all the heat transfer foam pad
alternatively, do you know how thick the heatsink is, i haven’t had any luck finding anything
oh my bad lol i missed that part
hmm, now i wonder if msi list the space underneath the cover lol
It ain't gonna be much
yah i didn’t imagine it would be
hopefully it might be just enough
i think it has 2 different slots, you think i could put it on the other one and loose no performance? or does it need to go on the top one because nvme
For the Viper, you will have to remove the cooler
Owait
No you want
Just don't use the cover
oh
lol
ok well thanks lmao
oh yeah it’s only a small cover, won’t even look bad
thanks lol
looks like its a bit worse than the mp34
while costing more

3.5/2.1 for mp34 vs 3.0/1.8
mp34 is more expensive here
i recently changed platform completely to AMD, with an x570 unify mobo, putting my m.2 nvme in the top slot
whenever i boot i now get a message saying press any key to skip disk checking
and it scans and repairs my c: drive (being the m.2) every time i boot up
anyone know why this may be happening?
windows files might need some help lol
Did you reinstall WIndows or just slap new hardware in and go?
I'd recommend a DDU in Safe mode, delete ALL drivers, AMD, Intel and nVidia. Then start fresh with new driver installs
the latter lmao
okay would i have to backup my files before doing that?
ohh okay
so would it have been a better idea to reinstall windows when i changed hardware?
No
It would have been a great idea to DDU everything first
Then install hardware
Then boot windows
oh cool cool cos i tend to never mess with windows stuff as i don't know what my license key is
Well
i got it from u/s5ean about 4 years ago
Use a Microsoft Account
SIgn in with an MS account and tie it to that, then just sign in and activate it
When you reinstall
oh sick
so for the disk checking stuff, ddu would be the way to go?
Yeah, DDU the drivers in Safe Mode, restart, Fresh install drivers
See if that helps, it probably will
Get all your chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer, don't use Windows update
Get Ryzen master too so it installs the AMD Power Profiles and CPU driver
WD Black SN750 1TB any good for $130? Looks like it's on sale
When you're updating metadata on all your livestream archives from the past 20 months...
itll go down to an hour or so. It's just funny af
and its going again
whatcha using to update metadata?
just windows lol
i dont archive streams/yt except for like 3 channels i like or channels im scared will get hammered
my ytdl client does all the metadata for me
ahhhhhh icic
by "your livestream archives" i didnt think u rly meant YOUR livestreams lmao

nice
the best 500gb ssd For 60$ is the 970 Evo??
yeah
okok
got a 1 tb ssd in my pc but its full would you say get another or get a higher hdd
What are some good 1tb and 2tb 2.5" ssds?
why lili :(
What is the situation of "need"
no m.2 slots
or full m.2 slots
(yes I do know I can get a hdd for less) nevertheless would something like a 2tb crucial p1 be a good storage drive or is there any other ones you would recommend
crucial gronse
get a sabrent rocket or a mp34
mp34 doesn't do 2tb btw
For a storage drive, a P1 or like Sabrent rocket Q will do fine
ok thank you
yeah it is like 20 more but I will definitely consider it
yep
I already have a 500gb SN750 if I add a 2tb rocket q is there anything else like any more sata ports disabled on the B550 Aorus Pro AC
@untold grove I mean as a storage drive
What good hdd are they if ppl say get that
What hdd should I look into getting if my ssd is full any suggestions
Anything above 1tb
i need an exact amount lmao
Maybe 2tb or 4 depending on prices
@untold grove thank you
@untold grove, this needs to be your new name. "Storage Woman"
lmao
but she's already storage queen
i liked data hoarder...
I just realized that there is a deepcool gameaxx and a XPG gameix
is the kingston a2000 good?
its ok but theres better drives for the price
if you plan to encrypt its a very nice drive
hi, is there a way i can transfer information from my internal HDD to my external HDD if my HDD is not plugged into anything? like from an external standpoint?
through a pc, so i got my new pc built and i brought over my PSU and graphics card, and i didn't think i needed anything from my internal HDD, but there's a couple things i need
yea its np
just put the hdd in and drag and drop
is there any external cables i can use to connect the cable outside or it has to be inside?
thank youuuuu
Any recommendations for m.2 nvme ssd 500gb for OS bootdrive?
^^
WD750 and MP34.
on Samsung and Sabrent. Samsung is overpriced and Sabrent makes some crappy drives. Also
sabrent makes great drives what u on
and samsung is only $20 overpriced most of the time
makes up for it with insane endurance and god tier nand/controller
I wouldn't get the Rocket Q for ex
i wouldnt get any qlc drive
as mp34 costs about the same
ik, so why recommend a brand instead of a product
Third try lol
$20 to spend elsewhere is significant
depends
i always get samsung drives
but then again my use case is way different from most ppl here
yes, but a newbie will take it as buy whatever from these brands, so you need to clarify
Samsung can be a decent choice as they hold their value, but imo you're pretty much always better off with an mp34 and an upgrade elsewhere
but then again I've bought two 4.0 drives
honestly though
mp34 like
im p sure itll hit rated tbw and just die
ive gotten 3.5pbw on a samsung 960 evo
and it was still fine
Maybe. If that becomes a common experence you have a point, but until then its an excellent value drive
I'm sure someone has done endurance testing on it
havent found any
imo what they do is get bad nand and if it fails, the money they saved on the nand outweighs the cost of shipping more rma units out
like the ocz approach if u remember them
Do you have some edv that team uses bad nand on those drives?
or is it just suspision
just speculation from friends who work in the ssd field
not saying id avoid the mp34 or anything
just saying that extra $20 on the samsung drives makes sense most of the time
OK fair, but if it hits its tbw that'll probably last the avg user well over five years
im saying like
thats best case
worst case its like ocz
where theres a decently high fail rate but they accept rma no questions
Assuming that the drive hits its tbw and the user writes an avg of 200gbs per day, an mp34 would last 21 years
yep
again not saying its bad
but im also saying
never seen a samsung drive fail before it hits tbw
value of a storage device is the value of whatever ur storing
id use a mp34 as boot drive if i made weekly backups
If you're not doing backups you're silly anyway
Fair, but I'd say in 20 years ssd tech will have likely rendered a drive like that somewhat obsolete
So I say why not spend that $20 on something that makes a tangible difference in your use case
As it always does
their ssd software is nice too
and
you also have to remember
samsung comes with cloning software
SABRENT is life
for some people thats $20 value right there if theyre upgrading
ive had the free stuff bork a few installs

I don't care about cloning software. Rather do a fresh install, clones have always ended poorly for me
clones have always ended poorly for me
samsung's clone tool has been perfect on every system ive ever upgraded
like literally flawless
In any case, i need to get to work. good debate
❤️
think i'm getting sabrent then
sabrent or samsung yeah
pcie gen 3 sabrent 1tb and under are like
the same price as samsung drives
and worse than samsung drives by a bit
What is on the servers that requires hourly? That just seems excessive and you’re spending more time/effort to back them up than doing their thing
^^^^
i run vps now and keep those backed up in case client borks smth
for an extra fee
Still seems excessive but 🤷♂️
and configs
@lean quest they autobackup and then get encrypted and throw on gdrive
but i could easily store incremental backups on my local storage if i needed to
Question. Is the Seagate Baracuda 120 better than the Samsung EVO 860? I'm not terribly familiar with Seagate as a brand, but am hearing good things about them.
Really?
Damn. So, stick with Samsung or is there any other really good brands you recommend?
NVME Or SSD?
samsung is the best brand
theres some other good brands for cheaper but none that are better imo
SABRENT lili, you know this
SSD.
I was also considering using the M2 drive, but from what I've read, it won't make much of a difference. Would it matter much for OS storage?
Price of SSD and NVME all the same, may as well. Loading times, probs not notice a difference
*almost the same
Hm.
I might just buy the NVME card for the OS at a lower storage then, and grab SSDs for regular storage.
sabrent isnt better
but theyre a bit cheaper
Remember, this isn't Enterprise 😉
doesnt make sabrent better than samsung though hehe
Some days I think Lili is sponsored by Samsung 😂😂
just makes them cheaper
dude i wish
please wd/samsung sponsor me i dont want to buy drive
s
i shill whoever makes the best products
Fair haha
I mean I went and canceled my sata order after our first conversation and ordered 2tb Samsung so I guess we’ll see how that turns out for me
anyone alive here
Hold up. WD is actually decent?
Reason: Bad word usage
Was it on?
If it was off and not hooked up to anything it should be fine
And it was relatively recent
Girls und Panzer
did dat tho :*(
Have you done Full metal?
me no like
Which did you watch, the original or brotherhood?
brotherhood
I've been told the opposite before lel
I like most of the Anime I watch
Alright
wd is the best company currently making drives
i’m not the most knowledgeable about storage but was considering making this my boot drive and wondering if it’s any good
going to pair with samsung 860 2tb
lmao
xpg/adata is a brand u should avoid
ah alright thank you
if ur looking for nvme
samsung is great
and arouns $20 more than that drive
theres also the sabrent rocket lineup of drives
(dont get the rocket q)
or the teamgroup mp34
or the WD sn750
those are what you should be looking at
alright
i’ve been hunting for some well priced samsung ones so i’ll keep doing that
might peak at a few others from what you mentioned
thank u!
think i found my match
I like to hunt for the best deal, i’m honestly a bit indecisive as if i’ll get it or not
ebay is not the best deal for ssd
100%
i say this as someone who sells ssds on ebay
For gaming purposes, would this statement hold up against the samsung 970 evo plus or the corsair mp600?
Thank you!
Why a 15 year old needs 15TB of storage on enterprise grade drives. As Network storage i do not know. But hey i have it now!
mmmm old dell with 15TB worth of enterprise grade drives in it lmao
hell yea thats how it starts
whatcha gonna run on the dell?
Its gonna be a NAS
probally like windows server 2016 datacenter edition because i already know how to make iSCSI network drives with it
and im to lazy to figure out how to do the same with linux or somethin
corsair mp600 or sabrent rocket nvme 4.0?
if you had to pick a pcie 4.0 1tb drive
i wouldnt use win server for just storage
check out something like
or
980 pro
1tb version too expensive lol
lul
both the mentioned above r pretty close rn
id get the sabrent
for price
well
yea but at the same time i know windows server 2016 DC inside and out because i used it as a daily driver OS for like a year
depends what ur doing with it
i also know win server inside and out
lets just say u want the fastest speeds and longevitiy
corsair has higher rated tbw if i recall
and the heatsink is nice
for a 4.0 drive youll want a heatsink anyways
is it ok if i use say the heatsink that comes with an msi motherboard
that will be fine yes
both drives will be alright in that case
like
they both have the same controller
so i guess just pick whichver is cheaper
the corsair one is 50mb/s slower
the sabrent is $5 cad cheaper btw
on read
so ig the sabrent is the way to go
id get the sabrent
be sure to register the drive
or you wont get 5 years of warranty
just 1
alright, ty
@whole prawn anyways id use truenas personally but unraid is also alright
my truenas vm has served me well :))))
just as an fyi, im checking the two spec pages and both the tbw are 1800
yeah
i doublechecked
i was thinking of the 3.0 sabrent
which does 1665
instead of 1800
im back
only reason i dont use linux trunas etc
is my backup software i use
only runs on windows
they dont have a linux version or anything
then dont use that software
well im a broke 15 year old so not like i can go afford licensing for a different backup tool
the drives i got were working server pulls HGST Ultrastars
im to broke for new drives lmaoo
let alone expensive enterprise software
just use rsync to backup anything important?
what are you even backing up to
do you have another 15tb array?
then how do u even plan to back it up lol
google education account
and rsync is perfect for that
so use that instead
set up a cron job and knock yourself out
can even autoencrypt
cause rn whoever ur sysadmin is can see everything you have up there
source: am a google enterprise administrator

yup
im telling you as someone with a much bigger and better array
you dont want to use windows as a nas os
there will be issues
such as?
less warning for when a drive fails, no zfs, worse performance, just random quirks from windows not being meant to be a file server
because my current Nas is windows xp lmao
the fact that most selfhosted stuff your run on a nas works on linux only
like i get dunking on nerds who think linux should be on the desktop
but windows should not be on the server
imo
or if it is
it should be a vm

just learn and use truenas
its useful
well there is one other thing i have to do which idk how to do on any other OS
which is?
A: 3TB drives and a BIOS so i have to make two MBR partitions per drive just to use it all i only know how to do this with windows
B: Working server pulls wanna be able to stress test them for like 2 weeks before i put any data on them i only know how to do this with windows
what are u hoping to achieve on that first one
why do you need to make 2 mbr partitions?
arent you doing some kind of raid?
get a raid card
the rebuild times would be immense
would software raid be ok? because lmao i spent my entire budget on the 5 drives
an alright raid card is like $20 lol
would Raid 5 be ok
yeah youd be fine on a raid 5
like
so wouldent that be far to slow to do a raid rebuild
why would you do that
and then because i only have a gigabit network

anyone wanna lend some advice in regards to accessing my user file from my old PC on my new PC
plug in old hdd to new pc
dropped the HDD in the new PC
drag and drop
cept the user folder?
a lot of the time windows explorer will lock it
lmao u dont gotta scan
just the green bar up top going and going and going and going
its just windows being windows
wait dont HDD's cap out at like 130-140MB/s
the controller i got was just to plug one drive into
one hdd does
yes
5 do not
yes 4 of them are going straight to the mobo
i needed a extra sata port

I wasnt considering raiddddd at the time calm down
No PCI
pci to sas to sata
O.o
its like getting shot in the head and saying ok well overlooking that how are my legs doing
ya green bar has seemingly stopped up top while trying to open user file
the issue is youve been shot in the head
yes soft raid would work
if ur gonna be super weird like that
unraid is your best bet
unraid is also not free
Reason: Bad word usage
lmao
unlimited in this case means 24
which is the max amount of drives unraid will support if i remember properly
ok wellllllll since i do need to stress the drives for a week or two i guess if i ordered a actual raid card
30 my bad
it would be here by the time im done stressing them
and also no you do not need to stress them for a week or two
no one normal does that lol
just run a complete smart test
and scan for bad blocks
if theres none
then tada
all good
Well these are server pulls claimed as new from a company that is known to reset smart data
to make them look new
then why did you buy from them
Becaues im poor
then scan for bad blocks
hgst makes some nice drives
youll be fine
ive hever had a hgst drive die on me
im sad HGST got bought about by WD
would this be ok https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Perc-H310-RAID-controller-SAS-SATA-and-cables/274612404741
yea
waitttt dont raid controllers turn everything into like one massive partition
they can
wont a BIOS have a stroke over that if there limited to 2.2TB per parition
ideally i want like 15x 1TB partitions or something would i be able to do that with a raid card like this or whatever
ewwwwwww
whats wrong with that
do not
