what is raid?
i've heard about it and it generally conjures strong feelings (sometimes good, sometimes bad)
redundant array of independent disks
it's mostly used in servers, where the data is important and is used to save data if a storage device fails
except in a raid 0 config, which essentially creates two storage devices into one, like drinking from two cups at the same time
raid 1 is when you copy the data from one drive to another drive
so if one fails then you have the other with all the data
frick i can't explain it correctly
its like filling two cups with orange juice, but you only need to drink one, the other one is in case your little cousin breaks it and spills the whole orange juice
fascinating
so it's not practical for most consumers i assume
you could just have a backup external hard drive or something instead
slightly slower, still does the same thing
i can see why servers would need it
i like your analogy dude
good analogy
thx
ive never had a craving for orange juice before, but now i do
guava juice gang
bruh i be mixing orange and apple juice 😈
The chosen one born every million years
you can make sprite and apple juice look like beer when mixed at the right quantity, discovered this when i was 9 and made people mad
but t'was fun
bruh jus take coke inside of shot glasses, my lil brother and cousin were doing that and scared all the women there
Hey so does a m.2 have to be screwed down to work?
I lost my other screw and dont have any electrical tape
yes
you can get one from a hardware store
unscrew the second one
and go to a hardware store
I dont think you have to screw down but if u dont it might fall out
yeah itll fall out randomly
I have a 512b hard drive and I'm trying to transfer my data into a 4096b solid state drive. An error message keeps popping up on my cloning software because I don't think this action is possible. Any recommendations on how to fix this?
So this isn't really pc related but, I have an Xbox original with a busted HDD
I want to replace that hdd with an SSD
But I need a IDE connector for it
Because early 2000s tech
I'm looking for either an old IDE SSD or an adapter for a SATA SSD to IDE
Also, do IDE SSDs have dram?
If not I might go the second route
Check this out on @Newegg: Team Group MP33 M.2 2280 1TB PCIe 3.0 x4 with NVMe 1.3 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) TM8FP6001T0C101 https://www.newegg.com/team-group-mp33-1tb/p/N82E16820331417?Item=N82E16820331417&Source=socialshare&cm_mmc=snc-social-_-sr-_-20-331-417-_-11122020
Is this the team group m.2 people recommend?
Or is it the mp34
:)
It explodes
hhd go spining
when i try to change steam library to my hdd it says that it is read only
how do i change that
U cant
casually using a xbox harddirve as my hard drive lmao
why cant i change it tho
@vast patrol show what you are trying to do and more importantly where
you cant change it because the manufacturer made it that way
@heady raven i don't have time rn but on Sunday ill dm you for help
im just trying to use it as my steam library storage
@vast patrol post here when you have time, just put my @ on it. and we can try and have a look
Hi guys , i have 2 m2 ssds and i installed them, anyway i installed windows in one of them , updated everything even bios too but when i check my 2nd m2 ssd i can see it under device manger no problem.
bu i cannot see it as second storage (like D drive) what should i do ?
i only see C not D
see what i said above :)
im just putting it up so you can get an idea of what im doing
none of what you are posting is relevant for it
so, until you have time, no need to post about it
@minor sun even with a 2.4k build, should i get mp34
mhm
I have questions about SSD. I am creating a new built to play WOW on to replace my old custom gaming PC that is older and has a reg hard drive. I am not understanding the sizes. Would it be overkill to get 1T SSD? I see the recommended size was 480GB. I am mainly gaming and doing remote work.
I am trying to save money while still getting a lasting gaming PC
bruh wdym, 1tb ssd shouldnt be there for a small budget but if its like 1000+ 1tb ssd for sure, and we aint taking a 2.5 inch, kt gotta be m.2
wait they just playing that worm game
huh, 240gb ssd, 2tb hhd 7200rpm
Get what you can afford. An SSD for wow is an amazing upgrade, or for really any game with frequently loading data
Why are SSD so expensive
Cause they go zooooooom
Any recs for drives to fill a 4 bay NAS w/o breaking the budget? Probably looking to run a RAID 10 setup, so I'm thinking I want to go with 4 TB or 8 TB drives.
SSDs are WAY cheaper now than they were 8 years ago, like I think you were getting 120gb SSDs for like $500 then
Knowing that 1tb NVMEs which are way faster as well for like around $100 doesn't look so bad
pretty sure i got a 120gb ssd in like 2013 for $120 CAD ($100 USD)
It's gotten a lot cheaper but 4TBs are still over priced compared to buying two 2TBs or four 1TBs. 2TBs are pretty reasonable now. I guess 2TB is enough
Actually I might have been thinking of 512gb or something
Basically right now, SSDs are excellent for boot disks or data that is read a lot (i.e. games). But most stuff is fine still on disc hard drive which gives you more storage for the $
Boot drive on an SSD saves a ton of time though, probably one of the best upgrades you can make
so fast that it leaves a lot of ppl dehydrated, can't be going out to get a glass of water while windows loads up anymore:(
which SSD is better
Crucial P1 or the Western Digital?

Thid good m.2?
Uh yeah that seems like a pretty good deal with the promo code
does anybody know a way to permantely format a xbox360 hardrive?
What’s the best nvme I can get for $150 usd or lower
Is it good value?
It is :D
I've been pretty happy with the Corsair MP510. Wasn't aware of the MP34, looks good.
Seems to have good reviews.
I have a MP510 actually
Good evening. WD Red or WD Purple for a NAS that will also handle CCTV video storage.
I've got two competing workloads.
might be time to point you towards this again

Hi guys
I was thinking about buy a NVME M.2 disk and I don't know which buy between Samsung EVO 970 PLUS or Sabrent Rocket Q 1T. I Saw differences between the NAND memory MLC and QLC but I don't understand if the difference is valuable to choose one or another one
Which do you recommend?
uhm, i think from what ive seen most techies here would reccomend neither
you'll have to wait for them but they usually reccomend stuff like the mp34 or the sn750 or crucial p1
at least from what ive seen
mmm interesting
im still a bit iffy with storage
Don't get the Q drives from Sabrent, QLC isn't as good. They're a cheaper option though, and if you can get it for like 80 - 90 I'd say that's a good deal.
Well, I have this doubt because they are from similar prizes
What was it the Crucial P2, I think that one's on sale for like 89 with a promo code on Newegg
Got it
But, why the SN750 (10$ more expensive) is more recommended than Samsung Evo 970 Plus? I saw in some videos that the performance is better in the samsung plus
Just curiosity
My motherboard has PCIe 4.0, should I buy a nvme with this capacity? is it worth it?
If you're willing to spend the money, and you absolutely need the faster speeds then it might be worth it. They're quite a bit more expensive though
Really it depends on what you're doing, I think for the average user it's not worth it at all
Is the sn750 1tb for 116 usd a good deal?
Should I go for 970 evo plus or MP34 will I notice a difference in fortnite?
I bought an evo plus, and I haven't noticed any difference outside of file copies.
Might even send it back, really wasn't worth it.
Oh dang
Personally I'd still recommend a SATA ssd unless you are doing lots of file copies
Or you are willing to buy a cheaper NVME drive where the cost difference isn't there.
Is a MP34 Really good?
No. It's dramless
Will you notice? Probably not. But you can get a drive with DRAM for $5 more.
My bad. I was looking at MP33. MP34 looks fine.
Oh
MP33 doesn’t have DRAM
But the MP34 does
So maybe I should go for MP34 right?
Lot of people say it’s really good
yes
Yes
@left tendon don't you dare disgrace mp34 >:p
Can't best the value it has at 106$ for 1tb and 58$ for 512gb
I can't argue with that.
best m.2?
dw bout it
@modest ingot maybe look into honeybadger >:D
also
Sabrent rocket 4 plus is the amazing one
rocket 4.0 is just meh
980 pro better
¯_(ツ)_/¯
anyone know a way to fully format a HDD xbox360 500gb hard drive
Delete all the games
will clearing my whole harddrive clear any virus on it?
I don't even think you would need to clear the drive, a fresh re-install of the OS would probably do it
ok how to i reinstall that
idk if i have a virus its just my pc is really slow and takes along time to load its no my wifi bc i did test
Hey guys. I need some help. I've been having some troubles with my ssd. It's an m.2 nvme from corsair (Force MP600 1TB pcie gen4). First of all, i'd like to get out of the way everything i've tried, and the couple of things i haven't tried because i can't. My specs: Asus x570 prime pro, latest BIOS installed, 850w 80+gold psu, evga rtx 2080 ti xc2 ultra, ryzen 7 3700x, 32gb 3200mhz corsair vengeance, m.2 samsung 970 evo plus 250gb with latest version of W10 64bit, a samsung 860 evo 500gb and a seagate barracuda 1tb (these 3 disks all work perfectly fine). I've never applied any kind to overclock other than docp. What i've already tried: 3rd party apps to check que health of the faulting ssd (the mp600); chkdsk; disk management; diskpart; formatting; changing from gpt to mbr and viceversa just to check if anything changed; restoring windows to a point previous to the first time the disk went crazy; reinstalling windows altogether; reseating the disk; changing to the other m.2 slot (where the samsung 970 with the os is installed). The samsung worked fine, the corsair kept doing the same things as before. The only things i haven't tried (that i know of) are trying the drive on another pc (because i don't have one to try it on), and trying with an nvme to usb converter, because i also don't have one of those. Now to the problem itself: At first began when updating a game through battle.net. It got stuck on a loop of error while updating, then asking for an update again. Uninstalling only took it out of the launcher but the game remained installed in the disk. Scan and repair also resulted in error. Uninstalling manually wasn't an option, no matter what method i used. Then the real weirdness began. It stopped being recognized by windows. Not even by chkdsk, disk management or diskpart. Also, when it was recognized, it suddenly became protected against writing. Installing something would result in disk write error. It's stuck on that loop. Thanks in advance
@faint igloo at this point it's sounding just like a dead ssd... Does it still show up in bios still?
@minor sun Yes. I forgot to mention that. It shows up on bios and the SMART check says everything is fine with it. Short and extended checks
Tried whatever secure erase via bios?
I'm just thinking bios might just have a higher level of access or something, anyways, bios should have some sort of drive clearing thing.
No dice. Could it be a hardware error? Maybe the controller broke, or the memory modules are failling? I bought it September last year. The warranty from the store where i bought it already expired (1 year). However corsair has 5 year warranty. I've already contacted them.
Dunno, just seems like a very funky drive somehow
Yeah. Thanks for the help! 👍
whats a good 1tb ssd option plz @ me
Budget
Budget?
get an mp34 or sn750 and call it a day
Reason: Bad word usage
Reason: Too many infractions
why is my disk always at 100%
Is it the primary drive? Is it a hard drive?
it my primary harddrive
Hard drives spend a lot of time seeking for the next bit of information
So when you have a hard drive that is being used as the primary drive (boot drive), it will be active a lot of the time
also do oyu know anything on anti virus things which one should i use
I use Windows Defender lol
have you heard of any good ones
Also virus total, which is a website where you can upload a file or link that might be suspicious, and it gives you result
oh ok ty
I don't remember what antiviruses are good
Someone else will probably have that answer
ok ty for everthing
Yw
one more thing is that why my pc is so slow at somethimes
A big reason why it is yes
I went from a decent hard drive to a good quality SSD for my boot drive, it's a very nice change
Yes
I did it
It doesn't seem to be the best thing to do, most people suggest installing windows anew on the SSD and transferring everything from the old drive that you want on the new drive
And also backing up to some form of backup, whether that be an external hard drive, a bunch of flash drives, a google drive or something similar, or some combination of them all
No matter how you set up the new drive, have a back up
@half quest i use malwarebytes on top of windows defender, the free trial actively scans your computer and after you can start scans whenever
Other than the 2tb seagate barracuda hdd, what other good options are there for storage of games and pictures? Budget is $100-$200, and i've got 2 bays for drives inside the case
Well how much storage do you want
For 200$ you can grab 2tb of NVME storage
Or tons of HDD storage
anyone know a good priced 1-2 tb external hdd
Ideally I’d want more than 2 tb a drive I’m not very knowledgeable on what brands or models are good
m.2 ssd for games? between 100 and 150
i have the sn750 its fire. idk how good the gaming mode is or different but on both modes it more than fine
im talking abt the software that comes with the ssd (WD Black sn750)
i recommend team mp34 or sn750 if u have more money
@late vector wym? mp34 1tb costs like $110, their budget plenty
Barely better, not worth the dif
mp34 is better value than sn750.
@compact cape if you have an ssd boot drive, you'd be fine with a 2 tb hhd. Unless you're playing games that actually take advantage of the speed, no reason to use ssds for games except slightly faster loading speeds
2tb barracuda costs like $50
i have a 1tb ssd with games and boot and a 1tb hdd drive.
What 2tb nvme ssd should i get budget is 300
You could probably find it on Newegg for a better deal i just happened to have the amazon link
thats pretty good, its even an MLC drive
That’s what I said mr111, great for a Samsung 2tb
Question if anyone here
I'm ordering a ssd for my ps4 so it has a little more life before I can get a ps5 (already have a full pc) and don't know what storage to get, the 870 or 860 Samsung ssd
Both are 1tb
870
Question - completely forgot how I did it last time, but I have a 1TB SSD (Windows install) and a regular 2TB HD. I also have 2x 1TB NVME drives that I want to put into RAID0. However, when I switched my BIOS from AHCI to RAID, the two drives (SSD and HDD) do not show up under SATA1/2. What's the correct order here?
Check this out on @Newegg: XPG GAMMIX S50 Lite Series: 1TB Internal SSD 3D NAND PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 2280 (NVMe) https://www.newegg.com/xpg-1tb-gammix/p/0D9-0017-002B3?Item=9SIAJNUCTB2585&Source=socialshare&cm_mmc=snc-social-_-sr-_-9SIAJNUCTB2585-_-11182020 thoughts?
It's fine
@cerulean depot it's a gen 4 drive with gen 3 speeds at gen 3 prices, it's basically a gen 3 drive :p
Alright
hey, so I have a question
I'm on an old dell that has a 290ish gb hdd, and I have a 240gb intel ssd that I have. is there a way to switch the os to the ssd easily?
it's a desktop
anyone?
uhhh
I have been running an SSD and two HDDs for a few years now
All of a sudden Windows got really slow so I restarted my PC, now one of the HDDs is gone
Is my disk dead? In the partition manager it shows up as offline, and initializing it immediately errors.
HDD Sentinel detects it but reads no data or 0 for everything.
I have a question about Raid storage. I have a Mediasonic 4-bay enclosure with 4x10TB HDDS in it set up for Raid 10. I'm looking at giving this one to my brother and buying a new enclosure. However, I want to get an 8-bay Raid enclosure for a Raid 10. My plan is it put in 8TB HDDs. Any advice on which enclosure I should get?
@soft kite have a look at STH https://www.servethehome.com/

thanks
best of luck
@quartz epoch
have a look at the drives there
specifically, note how far down the speed list that the 970 Pro actually is
and yes, i have filtered for Prosumer NVME
(if that does not come through on the link)
your list should look like this
my decision for them was reliability (of course no one really knows right...
thats the total amount of drives you should be seeing
the Samsung drives have a good name
simply because they have been around SO darn long
yea i see them. ( used to be a system integrator, but that was a long time ago) I had very dood luck with many of the samsung products we used
But that was before all this sillyness
but from a perf pov (with an eye towards price)
its really hard to recommend their drives
yea they are pricy
was thinking black Friday if i could fine the right card to get them into the machine.
something like the MP600 or the FireCuda 520
just to give you an idea about price.
mp600 1tb is 185usd
the 520 1tb is 200
the 2tb firecuda 520 is 360usd
the mp600 2tb is 359
aye
and each of those drives are a good 40%-ish faster
they have been great
per drive
which is not something i would personally sneeze at
IF you are IO throughput bound that is
yea.. im worried about space too with the GPU and only 3 slots depending on the card.
thats where the highpoint AIC comes in
but your main problem with AIC will be pci-e bandwidth
you are on intel on that list
so 3.0 is your limit
insert words not fit for consumption here
im getting great speed on the Mb Mounted drives. I may just need to image and reload with some larger drives
how much throughput do you actually need?
my throughput both read and write are amazing with the MB raid zero
on 2 970 pro?
well, it is direct correlation some of the processing is 100% bottlenecked at the file read/write
on 3
i have it configured raid 0 3 drives
ah, kk
and it is FAST for sure, I am old, never even considered that level of throughput was possible (love it)
you thought about the value of having the os being on a different ssd?
that is why im putting in the other drives
i mean, have ONLY the os on its own little whatever drive
the os nad programs will run on 1 and all file and scratch ect on the new one. I did consider that.
might not be a lot of difference, but you should have some improvement
i did some tests actually and it didn't seem to make any difference, maybe with that level of throughput it doesn't matter anymore and other factors are the bottleneck.
a different approach might be multiple machines instead
and yes, that is only a question you can answer
but splitting the workload (if possible) into machines dedicated for each "part"
might be a much cheaper solution
well I have room for a second mini in the case , but im planning on doing a dual boot with hackintosh on that space
im more thinking in the "general" when i say a second machine
i didnt get to far reading on te hraid card you sent me
i get that..
what is the $ on that thing
if its physically viable is a minor detail at this point
its a thousand for that 8 port one
hmmm...
i could grow into that, i just dont know, ther eisnt much space left around that slot but i could relocate it also
you are going to hit a VERY hard limit very quickly with that card in a 3.0 slot
yea
you are very much in the "you really should just get a fiber connected san" area of "need"
yea true enough
Was it you i pointed at STH earlier today?
i work at home 500sq foot house
i bring more *^&% in here wife may remove me for get some extra space 😉
I dont think so
STH specializes in the latest news, articles and reviews of server, storage and networking products as well as open source software running on them
their storage section is what you want
they straddle that area you are in
sorry something happened to my app, screen went blank, had to switch to browser.
I have a ton of san in datacenter but not at home. was kinda trying to avoid it but it may be inevitably
you are pushing that boundary quite hard from my pov
but as said above
have a look at STH
just put away your creditcard before you do
yep, how i roll i guess.
there is a LOT of "ohhhh shiny!" things over there
hahaha yea
and i say that even with all the toys i have access to
what i have is not unbearable
if i decide to drop a couple NVMe in anyhow (say 2) card recomendations for that
the moment 4tb drives drop to 500 and below (for the good ones). you are home free (for your current workload)
any adapter works if its "just" storage really
so, go with whatever brand you like
any idea what a raid 0 would look like if i threw 4 SSDs at it. wonder what speed i might get out of this MB for that
i have tons of room in this case and maybe that gets me over the hump until these big drive some down and i can always move to a san after i pull them.
and thanks for the help. i'm afraid this STH site is going to get me into trouble. 😉
:)
4drive raid: you might be getting into trouble with the protocol overhead on the mainboard
but it could be something worth giving a go
That is what i was wondering. I have not much experience with the onboard stuff.
and by that, i mean, a 4 drive setup that tries to grab the 4th drive from a pci-e AIC
a 4 drive raid on a single AIC would just work
never tried what you asked about
so its just theory
well, i may try it, watching ssd prices to add some more to a storage array i have at the DC
so i may have some "spare" drives i could test
aye
for a few days at least
aye aye
you are very welcome :)
best of luck, and please report back if you get it tested :)
would love to hear about the result
I will for sure!
thank you
Is there a notable difference between the ironwolf and barracuda HDD?
exact model names?
Seagate ST4000DM004 4TB BarraCuda 3.5" SATA3 Desktop Hard Drive vs Seagate ST4000VN004 4TB IronWolf 3.5" SATA3 NAS Hard Drive
ironwolf is a 3year warranty drive
Point taken xD
but if you are curious, because there are other differences
look up the spec pdfs' on seagates website @topaz valve
BarraCuda 3.5 - Quick Start Guide, Data Sheet and Downloads.
being recommended the ironwolf because of the slightly better rpm and better lifespan or something. other than that i don't think it would be a difference for the extra bucks
that is something only you can answer :)
🙂
Is there anything I could do or is it dead for good?
#storage-devices message
I had quite a bit of data on it that I'd rather not have lost, especially for tomorrow.
backups
I don't have any backups. It's the disk where I put backups of other things, I didn't think to back it up too.
hmm
are there any downsides to those high-capacity drives compared to regular drives?
besides cost?
like a 12tb 7200rpm drive vs a 2tb 7200rpm drive?
i believe there is no crucial downsight
I got a 1TB NVMe drive currently. I want to put a secondary drive in my desktop. I want to just put a 2TB 2.5i SSD in it. I will install games like CS:GO to it so I do not expect improvements and such. I like less power consumption and heat output.
As a secondary drive am I missing something by doing an SSD over an HDD? Like writing too much to it or whatever that degrades its lifespan?
SSDs are just more expensive per GB/TB but they usually have longer lives than regular HDDs.
and faster
HDDs are still good, but generally by getting an SSD for gaming you save a lot of time from load times etc
does anybody know if a Sandisk Ultra 3D ssd 512g is okay for a 3070 build? new to PCs and I bought the ssd because it was on a Black Friday sale
Yeah, I guess that will do.
Anyone know the recommended speeds for an SSD to be paired with a 3080?
I never noticed upgrading a component in my PC until SSD came around.
it doesnt rlly matter what speeds, and ssd should be good
as long its not a cheapo ssd
yea you can use it, storage doesnt rlly have anything to do with graphics card
but i do reccomend getting at least one 1tb, cuz it gets used up quite fast if you have alot of documents, and games
nope, ssd will give you faster boot times, which is a big plus. SSD overall is just better than HDD
So I know it's best to have your OS on it's own SSD but what else would you put on there? Drivers, media players, peripheral sofware?
Asking because my OS is going onto a 500GB M.2 and I will have plenty of space left. I have a second 2TB M.2 for my games and stuff.
get your game launchers in there
MP34 good
Yea look for good CAD deals
So I'm pretty sure it has been asked a million times already, but is there a big difference between the 970 Plus and then 970 Pro for normal needs? Thank you in advance
There's apparently a price drop on the 970 Plus, so I'm interested to say the least
why get eithe
theress cheaper alte2rnatives that do just as good
mp34 is a good choice
the MP34 for the same amount of storage is around the same price.. at least it is here
the change isnt that great tbh
177$ for the MP34, and 180$ for the Samsung? (CAD)
Well that was mostly a technical question
the perf3ormance increase isnt that drastic between the 970s
I haven't decided to buy or not just yet, but I was wondering between Plus and Pro
whats the price difference
the performance change
for the same capacity
lmao plus
well yeah, but I'm confused as to what could make the price go up this drastically ^^
the pro is not that good, unless youre transfering a tb of data
longer "lifespan" and faster speeds
Yeah so for a normal consumer, it's not needed
not at all
Gotcha, well like I said, I haven't decided to buy yet, but I was notified about the price drop for the Plus..
Thanks a lot for the replies, and I'll def. add the MP34 to my watch list! :)
iirc, the plus isnt worth it that much either
but mp34 is better for the price, espeecially at lower storages
Yeah the price is definitely competitive
yeah
I usually went for Samsung for storage (Even tho I'm aware I pay a little extra for the brand)
Yeah thats what I might be doing too, the mp34 is also a good storage though
but yeah ive used samsung and its always been good
I've also been having problems with HDDs, so I'm slowly converting everything to SSDs.. ^^
converting EVERYTHING to ssd might be overkill, how much do ytou have?
I currently have 2 1TB SSDs and 2TB HDD, and 1 6TB HDD, Don't worry, I'm not getting rid of the 6TB HDD
I'm not converting that, that'd be Overkill
get a sabrent rocket
Does it have anything more noteworthy than others?
they currently have one of the bigger capacities for m.2 ssds
Yeah I noticed it had pretty insane capacities, but I'm not looking to spend a lot of money right now, so I was mostly aiming for a 1TB
yeah
yeah regardless of currency it is NOT worth it
Oh yeah, def not
at that point just get a better mobo with two slots of the nvme drivess and 2 2tb drives
I dont even hhave 1. 75tb filled, how do you fill 4 tbs
and this with a lot of videos lmao
Games
not so good internet speed, so I download everything
well, keep everything installed
ah ok, More understandable but most I could use is 3tbs personally lol
of only games? what is the usage of the drive
gotcha
sorry i had to give a presentation lol
and thats fair, i might have to get a second tb drive eventually when I get my pc
Oh no it's fine, no need to apologize ^^
I came here for info and to talk about it and try to figure stuff out, so thank you
lol its np
Hey, Newegg customer support led me hear with my problem in hopes someone could help me with my situation. I am simply looking for a compatible M.2 ssd for my Asus Rog G751JY gaming laptop. The problem is, after doing some research, that apparently it is not Nvme compatible, making it pretty hard to find one. By any chance is anyone willing to help me with this dilemma? Any help at all with finding this SSD would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou
yeah i can help, gimme a minute
take your time, ty so much
side note, preferably 2tb, but ill take anything i can get
are you looking to upgrade the current ssd or add another one?
so, the laptop as dual 2.5 inch drive bays, and a single M.2 slot
do you know what's in use right now?
it currently has a hdd, but has a m.2 slot, so i wanted to make the M.2 my main ssd and switch the hdd to a secondary
the laptop should have an ssd already
unless i can only get 1tb or lower, in that case i would get the m.2 and a secondary sata ssd
different models came with the ssd, mine did not i believe
so you currently have a 1tb 2.5inch hdd and a 256 or 512gb M.2
if im reading asus' product page correctly
have you taken the back panel off the laptop?
it looks like this?
yup
cool
except the second drive is empty
im getting a ton of conflicting information rn
im taking off the back now to send a pick
close up on that part
Thinking of buying a second M.2 for my games and stuff, 1TB. Should I get it or just a normal SSD? I know running two M.2 the second will run slower.
well, games and stuff doesnt require the speed that NVMe offers
so a 2tb sata ssd would be better for the price
oh it wont let me send pics
oh, just dm it to me
says im not authorize
ill send it
ok
so the HDD is in the slot covering the ssd slot
i would suggest moving the HDD to the other slot, and i will go find a proper M.2 NVMe ssd
Really? Games dont benefit from the speed of M.2?
in terms of load time, they do a tiny bit, but its hardly noticable
it'll be a few years before we get games that require ssd
true good to know, i also use this laptop for music production so m.2 would be great if possible
be careful not to strip any more screws :P
will do lol
so that is an hdd? i looked in device manager and it just said disk drive
Is there a downside to running two M.2 though? Am I right in thinking the 2nd one will run slower or does it depend on lane sharing?
you can see the motor through the drive cage
cool ty
having a second one wont effect the speed of the other, it all depends on the motherboard pcie lane config
typically, the top M.2 runs right off the cpu
and the 2nd or 3rd will run off the chipset, which could be slower depending on other devices using PCIe chipset lanes
tysm
only thing is, i saw this laptop did not support nvme? Am i mistaken cus there was a lot of conflicting information like u said
and is 500gb the biggest i can go?

Original post:
Had my G751 serviced under warranty due to a rattling sound. Ended up being the double sided tape that holds the CMOS battery came undone allowing the battery to rattle around. Took the opportunity to take a bunch ...
this dude has an ssd in his laptop
looks like that
model number is MZ-HPU256T/004
translates to Samsung XP941
which according to multiple sources is actually a 2.0 x4 drive
oh, you cant send links either
i just saw it im not sure if its true, but i think i saw that being the case mutliple places
but i dont know much about this i will take your word if this guys worked
because 3.0 x4 ssds will just run at 2.0 speeds
ok
here are the options lol, ill go look for a well priced one
(convo was taken to DMs, M.2 protocol is actually AHCI PCIe 2.0 x4, those arent made anymore/are overpriced, SATA SSD is the only option)
when it comes to HDD's vs SSD's is it better to just get a large storage SSD or get an HDD for games and files while using an SSD for the OS and other things?
i would use an ssd for games
@red jay standard setup is 512gb SSD+2tb HDD
So fit what you frequently use on SSD
And offload the rest to hdd
my poor C drive is at 9.88 gigs of space out of 149 LOL...
Lel
hmm
I can give you drive suggestions if you want for a budget
whats good is that you can get decent storage for pretty cheap
ok so games, OS, etc would be best for SSD while pictures, videos, general storage on HDD?
ah makes sense
Big aaa games I usually put on HDD
looks at games at 100+ gb in size
I don't actively play them, and they take a lot of space
mama mia
Green man
congrATs
mr green man
ima try choosing an SSD and HDD, but got suggested brands i should look for when selecting?
samsung
i have a bookmarked suggestion
do they also do HDD?
just off the top of my head
They're just expensive imo
what RPM when selecting HDD? assuming higher RPM is generally better when moving in bulk
moving files in bulk*
Anyways
I suggest not looking at samsung to start off for SSD storage
they're good, but expensive
You can get the same quality for cheaper
o
@red jay anyways, how much are you looking to spend on storage?
gimme a number
and I give you specific drives
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
mm, under 70 maybe?
for everything?
crucials good
And if you are sus about team, MP34 is a p nice drive, SN750 also an option
https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-black-sn750-nvme-500gb/p/N82E16820250109
i think i'll go for that HDD and the western SSD, ty for help there. next ima be looking at CPU's which i got one in mind atm
So, what budget?
ima check after i add them rq, my budget is like only making 500 a month so around 800-900 by mid next month i'd say
and most parts i got listed is around 600 or just below
Can Anyone help me figure what SSD would work in my HP Laptop?
quick question probably a stupid question. whats the point in having both an ssd and an hdd
@heady raven Hey, it's been a while and I was hoping to get your help with wiping clean my old ssd to reuse it for regular storage. When you got the time let me know 🙂
@swift drum hello
Hey
So I wanted to wipe my old drive so I can reuse it for storage. Can you help me?
It was the one I used formally as my boot drive but now I want it as general storage.
aye
should be simple enough
@swift drum so, want to do it here or in a dm?
your choice :)
here's fine.
could you post a picture of your disk management window then @swift drum ?
remember: winkey+shift+s
drag a box around what you want to share
then ctrl+v here
disk management :)
not file explorer :)
right click your start button, click on disk management
okay, and you are 100% that you dont have anything stored on the E: drive that you need @swift drum ?
No, it's all got transferred to my c drive
I just want to clear my e drive and leave my other ones alone.
i ask, because there is no going back from this
I just want to make sure that if I reflected all my files from my e-drive to my c drive nothing will change with the c drive right?
correct
good, okay, I'm ready.
disk 1 is the one we are dealing with
yeah, the old drive
in the bottom part where disk 1 is split on a series of blue and black boxes
right click each blue box, and select delete Volume
those 3 red marked blocks
the warning translates to this: There is currently "something" on this drive, and I can see that the drive is in use (because there is something on it). Are you certain you want to delete it?
you are aware that there is data there
and yes, you want to delete it
ok
ever worked in a command prompt before?
no
you should end up with a black window
type
diskpart
press enter
allow it to run
ok a new window opened
okay it gave me a list of disks
picture please :)
ok
it's still selected disk 1 right? I haven't typed anything else besides what you said to
giving me the same message
picture of the full window please
the drive is also missing from the file explorer if that explains anything since the main partition with the files was deleted
aye aye, that the "drive" is gone from file explorer is as intended
so why aren't these partitions not going way? maybe the motherboard still recognizes the old drive for as part of the boot?
no
its because they are part of what windows considers very important
it does not account for it being on a drive that you are not using
so, we can either go out of our way and fix it, which will gain you all of 600 megabytes of storage
or ignore it
it is your choice what you want to do @swift drum
I'll just leave it as is, 600 mb ain't worth any more trouble.
So how do I get the drive back on the file explorer? I forgot?
useable
new simple volume in disk management right?
got it
thank you so much once again. You really make being on this server a great experience 😄
I will thanks
does anyone have a crucial mx550?
Hey naed how do you connect a external hard drive to a pc never appears it working
if it connects through usb you should need to just plug it into a usb port
and I would try and format it I guess
Seagate makes good hdd @robust hedge
you replied 12 hours
CAuse I just saw the message my guy 😂
@robust hedge at the time you asked, i would have answered the following: zzzz ZZZZ ZzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
what use case are you asking for a HDD for thou?
Best HDD in what way, price, performance, reliability, size, etc..?
that is a solid drive for its price
do any SSHDs have DRAM?
yeah some do afaik
ah
@craggy pollen if you want to make certain i see something, please use @ :)
Did you find an answer already or?
oki doke i actually didnt check since yesterday
so basically someone was asking me a custiomer how can i use the external drive from my xbxo to my pc because when i plug it in it doesnt appear and i always ahve this issue with people
is there a solution for this? @heady raven
thanks for reminding me too
like formatted for the xbox?
cause i know another person used thwe external drive on mac and i was like i cant help its prob a os difference
i know what you mean its just weird how it doesnt work
got the drive near you?
its not mine and i need to contact the dude again
anything youd suggest hes getting a hard drive either way but he said itd be nice
yes
but its linux?
because that can see the drive IF its just a formatting problem
gparted on a usb stick
a simple test for your customer is this:
format it then
yeah okay got it ill let em know
gparted on a usb stick is the path
ok thanks for your help ill let em know
you know about rufus right?
the thing for usb
aye
like from linux to windows
simplest way for your customer to make the usb stick with the gparted iso
Rufus is a small application that creates bootable USB drives, which can then be used to install or run Microsoft Windows, Linux or DOS. In just a few minutes, and with very few clicks, Rufus can help you run a new Operating System on your computer...
yeah cool cool
this makes more sense thanks 🙂
and then its "just" a 5 minute video call to fix it (if the customer feels insecure about it)
you are very welcome :)
yeah ill prob do that tbh because i dont feel like driving 20 minutws to do it
have a great day naed
likewise :)
SSD Spreadsheet w/ that info is in the pins
no
how do I transfer data from 1 m.2 to another because I want to upgrade from my SATA M.2 to an NVMe one but except I don't want to reinstall windows for like the 3rd time
@void blaze same size?
no, my current one is 500gb but I want to get 1tb or maybe 2 if I can afford it
ah, that should be simple
macrium reflect (free version) can clone the drive
all you need is the following 2 thing
a working windows
so you can make the usb stick with the software on it, for doing the cloning
usb stick will be wiped of content when you do that. so be aware of that
aye, the user interface is quite simple for Reflect too
if you are in doubt, just come and holler here, and we can help you
k
What is a good 1TB hard drive under 100?
2tb barracuda at around 55 usd @grizzled pier
but just to verify, you are looking for a HDD not a SSD right?
Yeah cause don’t SSD go up in price as you get more storage
my current motherboard has "Onboard M.2 Socket 3 for 2242/2260/2280 SSDs" will i be able to use my 2400mb/s drive?
Most likely yes.
Thank you!
Yea it's good, usually too expensive but 250$ is pretty good
Nice I'll tell him cuz i haven't seen a good 2tb m.2 for less
@heady raven since you were the one to recommend me the TeamGroup SSD a while ago, do you still think it is a better choice than buying the intel 665p on sale for 82.99?
sshd better than hdd?
Barely
so better to go get a 2tb ssd rather than a 2 tb sshd?
Well
I meant as in ssd boot drive +hdd
But a 2tb ssd is much better than an 2tb HDD in every way exept price
Assuming its tlc or better
So I just got a 500GB M.2 SSD and a 1TB SATAIII SSD, My current boot SSD is corrupt as heck and I can't seem to repair it (had it since 2015)
Both SSDs from Samsung since surprisingly the WD options cost more
@cerulean depot yes, the mp34 is the better drive imo
There's not much difference between NVME and 2.5in SSD
It's just on paper that you'll really notice a difference under normal use as a PC enthusiast/gamer you're really just throwing money away getting high end NVME
NVMe M.2 SSD PCIe vs. SATA SSD vs. SATA SSHD vs. SATA HDD Game Loading Times. First-time start.
Computer Details :
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
GPU: Palit GeForce RTX 2070 Super GameRock PremiumEdition
RAM: G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 2X8GB DDR4/3400 MHz CL16
PSU: Corsair CX 750 M 750 Watt 80 PLUS
SSD: SABRENT ROCKET NVMe M.2 SSD PCIe 4.0 1TB
SSD: Patriot...
Any good 2tb m.2 recommendations? Samsung ones are a little pricey
pcpartpicker.com, storage, choose settings, lowest to highest
@zealous bramble I wouldn't call it wasting money when we're getting em for future proofing and barely paying for more than a sata drive
Mp34 1tb for example, 107$ for 1tb
Main thing that'll be interesting for drive speeds is Direct io
Should be with us Q1 next year
@fading crane Look into the SN750 or the Samsung 970/860 EVO
The 970 and SN750 are both NVME
But the 860 is M.2 Sata
@fading crane 970 evo plus 2tb is on sale for 250$ on Amazon atm
Ty
@fading crane HP EX950 2tb for $205 on Newegg rn
is the HP one good?
you could probably just get a decent 2tb drive like the sn750/mp34 for the price of 1.5tb 970evo unless its on a sale or something
Is this better or on par with the sn750?
Already have the sn750 and it's really on 6 bucks cheaper after tax is it worth getting over it for any reason?
recommendation for 2x16gb ram ddr4?
@hollow adder for what cpu
Crucial Ballistix 3600c16
Thx
Can anyone help me out rq please?
I bought a kingston SSD, tried to install windows on it but the windows installer wasnt recognizing the SSD. Ive tried everything, tried to locate it through CMD, changing the SATA mode on the BIOS, hard resetting the SSD on my other computer and the windows installer still doesnt recognize my SSD as a storage drive
other computers do recognize it tho
Check and make sure the SSD is plugged in properly and that the cable is not faulty
Motherboard is an Afox IH61-MA5 , not sure if the BIOS is up to date but considering that the MoBo is for an old chipset (2nd/3rd gen Intel, I'm using an i5 Ivy Bridge) it wouldn't surprise me that the BIOS is outdated
