I think I might have tried a 3090 FTW3 in this configuration, don't remember.

#

Good luck, happy building

#

If I could get a PCIE4 riser for $30 or less, I'd go with a vertical mount with my closed loop GPU

low pumice
#

True, but vert mount isn't usually for performance anyways

amber glacier
#

But I don't feel like spending more money for less performance, especially when the vGPU mount makes it much more annoying to access the safe boot button when I mem OC

It's a gpu with an aio attached to it

Can I do that with my 3090?

There's waterblock for FE for custom loops but I don't think there's any GPU AIOs that'll work with fe 3090

bronze cave
#

What's a waterblock?

amber glacier
#

Imagine the thing you mount to cool your CPU, but for your GPU instead

#

And instead of having closed tubes that are already filled and connected to the radiator, you only have screw holes to mount your own tubing

bronze cave
#

Should I add one of those to my 3090?

#

This is getting out of hand. Haha.

amber glacier
#

Like I mentioned, if you want to go full custom loop, it will be $500

#

I don't think it's a good idea for a beginner

$500 is just the starter kit for a single component custom loop too

And that 3090 is at least half the cost

I have the edge. I like it. Unfortunately I'm not home so I can't tell you much about it :p

It was a bit more than the PRO-A which seems to have the same specs but the PRO-A is ugly.

It's a bit better than the Pro-A, it has a better VRM

#

Although the Pro-A is still sufficient unless you plan on really pushing it

#

it depends on how they're mounted

their fans just pull air in and out thru the back of the case

bronze cave
#

Is there a difference between a radiator and liquid cooling? If so, what?

shrewd juniper
#

Liquid is just the concept of cooling your parts with water, you need a pump and cpu block with preferably fans although technically not needed while the radiator is just one of these

bronze cave
#

Gotcha

#

I am trying to decide on cases and cooling (for i9-12900 and 3090 -- for gaming and maybe some mining) and I really like the Fractal Design Torrent but it doesn't have a place to mount cooling on top. The other option is the Meshify 2 which does have that but less airflow.

#

I have seen some folks mount a radiator inside the front fans on the Torrent and wondering if that's just as good.

left pulsar
#

The Torrent was designed around having predominately great airflow. Generally fans on a rad work better when "pushing" air through, and a front rad works plenty fine. In the following pic, it's a "push-pull" setup & I scribbled over the "pull" fans as an example. the 2 curved lines would be the preferred tubing route, as far as I know. (so any air bubbles would go up and stay away from goin through the tubing to pump/water block). edit: i've heard top rad is best, but idk how much better it actually is overall.

bronze cave
#

Makes sense

#

I wish there was an flow chart for making these decisions. Haha.

You can choose whatever path for the air you wish, orient the fans to make it so.

low pumice
bronze cave
#

That's super helpful Mr1111

low pumice
#

Well and o11 is pretty designed for custom loop

bronze cave
#

I was looking at the Meshify 2 and Torrent too

low pumice
#

Torrent is just a weird spot for me

#

Meshify 2 is good

bronze cave
#

Because you can't add any cooling on top?

low pumice
bronze cave
#

Is 2x180 not good?

low pumice
#

It's not common

#

It has brackets for 3x120 according to someone though, but you'll be missing out on a bit of that width

bronze cave
#

I saw some Torrents with radiators mounted on top of the 2x180 in the front and on top of the 140s on the bottom but I don't know anything about radiators and how they compare to AIO. In fact, I don't know anything bout cooling.

low pumice
#

With custom loops, there's a few 2x180mm radiators

#

With AIOs, none that I know of

bronze cave
#

In the Torrent, you can do 3x140 in the front too

low pumice
#

Don't remember if it'll do 3x140 rads but it prob does

covert apex
#

There are solutions where you can use custom loop rads with a custom AIO kit but most of those are old and not worth it for the price

low pumice
#

I mean

#

That's just a custom loop at that point

covert apex
#

Pretty much

#

Just with a all in one cpu block combo unit

bronze cave
#

Is the Torrent airflow really any better than the Meshify 2?

low pumice
#

Not really noticeably better

bronze cave
#

I like the idea of 3x140 on the bottom blowing directly on my 3090

#

So I think that's what I'd be giving up by doing with the Meshify 2 vs the Torrent

low pumice
#

Well

#

Torrent is a decent bit better from a case perspective, not really noticeable from an overall temp perspective

low pumice
bronze cave
#

I have no idea

#

I will be running a 12900k and the 3090, for flight sim and maybe some mining

low pumice
#

(4c is a lot in a case-to-case comparison, but if you have good cooling, it doesn't matter as much, and afterall, GN tests with an air cooler, and torrent was loud as heck)

bronze cave
#

What's 4c?

#

What's GN? lol

low pumice
#

4c as in 4 degrees Celsius

#

GN as in Gamers Nexus, one of the people that tested Fractal Torrent

bronze cave
#

Ah

#

So it sounds like I should go with the Meshify ..

low pumice
#

My opinion is this, if you're going to go aio, torrent is probably not the best option, otherwise, it's great for air coolers and can be fun with custom loops

#

Meshify is good, but there's other options still around

bronze cave
#

Custom loops are expensive though, right? And I'd have to learn how to do them.

low pumice
#

Yes and kind of yes

#

It's 300$+ generally for full loop, and you'll have to do your own research on what goes together with what, and how to maintain it

bronze cave
#

Maintain it?

#

No thanks -- you just eliminated that option for me!

low pumice
#

Generally you'll want to change coolant every year or so for custom loops

#

Lol

bronze cave
#

Oh, that's not too bad.

low pumice
#

But draining can be annoying

bronze cave
#

I looked at the p500a and 5000d/7000d and just don't like the look of them.

low pumice
#

Alright

bronze cave
#

If I do a custom loop, I can use it to cool both the GPU and CPU, right?

low pumice
#

Yes

#

But do keep in mind custom loop isn't as simple as putting in an aio, having to fill things in your case with water always requires caution

bronze cave
#

If I want to run the lines all pretty with right angles and stuff .. is it correct to assume that's when it gets expensive?

low pumice
#

Hardline tubing makes it like 3x harder than just doing soft tubing

#

But tubes don't really cost much over like 30$

#

It's the blocks and pump/res that's expensive

bronze cave
#

Would I need 2 if I want to cool both my GPU and CPU?

low pumice
#

Cpu block costs somewhere around a hundred, GPU block another hundred or more, pump res another hundred or more, tubes and fittings might cost you 50$, coolant another like 30$

#

Probably wrong, throwing out random numbers, but you get a sense of things

bronze cave
#

Gotcha

#

Do you know what case this is?

low pumice
#

That's o11

#

And well, LTT is meh, it's LTT

bronze cave
#

Not a good case?

shrewd juniper
#

O11 is fine

#

There's definitely better though

low pumice
#

O11 is fine, good for custom loops, just a bit overused, just saying LTT isn't usually the best with information, they're the people that'll probably tell you to get a 800$ kit over 500$ worth of parts that'll do the same thing imo

bronze cave
#

Ah. Gotcha

#

What do you think of this one? LIAN LI LANCOOL 215 X Black Steel

shrewd juniper
#

It's also okay, personally I'd go with phanteks p500a or corsair 5000d airflow

bronze cave
#

I was hoping for something with some fans on the bottom to cool my GPU

shrewd juniper
#

Not really needed

bronze cave
#

Not even when mining?

shrewd juniper
#

Nope

#

Mining uses the memory also if you're mining right you will have lower temps than gaming

bronze cave
#

I don't know anything about mining but figured since I have a 3090 I should try it when I am not gaming

shrewd juniper
#

Yeah you should, great at mining

#

Although if anything you'd want to put an extra fan on the back of the gpu

#

To cool the memory on the back

bronze cave
#

The back = the part that's facing down?

knotty sparrow
#

In normal orientation that would be the side facing the cpu

bronze cave
#

Thanks

#

Still trying to figure out my case/cooling Fal'Cie 😦 I have all my other parts and ready to go but so much to learn about cooling.

low pumice
#

Tbh with mining you typically need even less cooling at the GPU, you'd typically uv and uc, and cooling vram tends to be more of a heat transfer issue rather than hear dissipation issue (bad pads)

bronze cave
#

I do know I should replace the pads on the 3090 ..

knotty sparrow
#

Usually a good idea, but not always necessary

bronze cave
#

I think I had an epiphany while walking the dog.

#

If I don't really need to water cool my GPU, and my CPU only cost $550, what's the point in spending a couple hundred bucks to water cool the CPU? I assume no harm will come to it and if, after a couple of years, the heat takes it out, it will be time to upgrade anyway, no?

low pumice
bronze cave
#

So I think I'm just going to go with the torrent. Unlikely I will overclock so the fans should be fine. If I do overclock, I can add an artic liquid freeze II 120 for the CPU or a small air cooler that won't block the airflow in the case.

low pumice
#

A lot of the time, it'll lose to a good AIO

bronze cave
#

I figured as much but the artic II seems to have a thicker radiator and I probably won't need much cooling.

low pumice
#

Think of it this way, a radiator is basically the heatsink on an air cooler

#

If your radiator has less fins than your air cooler, your air cooler is going to perform better

shrewd juniper
low pumice
# bronze cave Good point

And as a reminder, radiators aren't just a big block of metal, they look like this, air still flow right through

Do cpu tower coolers get particularly hot? I was trying to stick another fan on my cooler and they're held on with the weird little wire brackets and for whatever reason despite using the same kind of fan that comes on the cooler there's too much space so I was going to put little bits of gasket rubber under the corners so that it will actually hold

I just want to make sure it's not the kind of thing where I need to be concerned about the rubber melting

What's a good air cooler for my i9-12900k on an MSI EDGE Z690 board in a Fractal Design Torrent case?

12900k is not really recommended to be ran with an air-cooler but a Noctua DH-15 iirc should be tolerable but idk the dimensions of the case and cooler size

It's either air cooler or 120mm arctic freezer II. I don't have room for anything else in this case.

Actually I thought a minute and probably should flip, so you'd then have 6in 3out and positive pressure instead of 3in6out negative pressure.

remote mural
left pulsar
#

Well you already see the back frames of the bottom fans. It'll look plenty good, as side fans being intake is very common. 3in 6 out would sort of suck extra dust in from anywhere it could, being such a negative pressure ratio.

azure crown

shrewd juniper

Those mounts are meh from what I've heard but it works til lian li can ship one

azure crown

really shouldnt make much of a difference

shrewd juniper
#

I guess

#

But it does iirc

azure crown
#

i assume maybe the distance from the board to the top of the ihs is shorter for the 1700 socket? thats all that could realistically make it not mount as well

left pulsar
#

Perhaps the ihs is taller/shorter on the 12gen so a new bracket actually makes quite a difference.

azure crown

yeah, shorter

would decrease mounting pressure

regardless, i would intake from the bottom and top, then exhaust through the 360mm rad through the side

azure crown

yeah, but thats the cold plate, not the mounting bracket

dreamy locust

But...
Big question
Is fan 0% speed the minimum speed the fan can run at?
I have Corsair LL120 (min.600rpm max.1500) at 0% speed they still spin... I thought they would just stop spinning

knotty sparrow
#

The cpu fan has to be spinning always

dreamy locust
#

Not the CPU fan but the case fans

#

Who would use LL120 on CPU cooler? Xd

knotty sparrow
#

Ah, well that depends on your motherboard mostly and what software you use

dreamy locust
#

MSI bios

knotty sparrow
#

PWM or DC mode?

dreamy locust
#

I'm using pwm, maybe if I set it to DC (voltage) i can make the fan stop spinning

#

Pwm

knotty sparrow
#

That's what I was thinking too. There's a point where the voltage is too low for it to spin.

dreamy locust
#

Yes, obviously, but how can 0% speed pwm make the fan still spin

#

Strange

#

But 0% pwm on CPU cooler makes the fans stop spinning

knotty sparrow
#

Even at 0 pwm speed, it's still 12V

#

Weird.

dreamy locust
#

So it changes how many Amperes it uses?

knotty sparrow
#

It changes the width of the signal pulses

dreamy locust
#

Oh...
Right, it's a pwm 🤦‍♂️

#

Bruh

dreamy locust
#

I let cinebench running for a bit and CPU temp: current: 69.4°C max: 70.3°C

#

That's good I think

#

Apparently even with adjusted fan curve the freeze 34 can't help much the 3600x under max load...

#

I watched sometemperatures benchmarks for 3600+freezer 34 and the max. temperature for 3600 is 73°C
And my 3600x goes to only 70°C
So that's pretty good
(All with 100% fan speed)

Wayyy off here

tepid reef

is the id cooling tg-25 thermal paste that comes with the se 224xt good enough

It's been working for me

Is there any water blocks for rx 580 cards

#

I'm looking into one but I can't find one on newegg

covert apex
#

Probably because it would be stupid to watercool a RX 580, it's not a high end card

#

The waterblock would have cost as much as the GPU itself did couple years ago

left sleet
#

True but graphics cards r still really expensive right now

shrewd juniper
#

Yeah but no point spending like 400$ on a custom loop for a 580

sacred wren
#

At that point sell the 580 and buy a scalped 3060 ti

knotty sparrow
#

Some miner will buy the 580 in a heartbeat, no matter the price you set

idle tiger
#

Could just put a $25 universal block on the 580. Build a loop because you want to tbh.

Hey all! Just to confirm… tower cooler with a 120mm fan attached to the fins… do I want the fan airflow pushing against the fins in the direction of my exhaust fans? (Fan on right side of cooler overtop and near the ram. Or do I want the fan on the left side of the fins pulling the heat for the fins and then toward the exhaust fans? I’m thinking right side.

timid carbon
#

Pull air from the front

knotty sparrow
#

Fan over the memory, blowing through the fins towards the rear exhaust

timid carbon
#

Push to the back

nova peak
#

Got it Fal’Cie. RAWR, unfortunately I have Dell prebuilt so no front intake. I do have 1 fan on side for in take. Could drill a bunch of holes in the front bezel. lol.

nova peak
#

Haha

#

Don’t tempt me. Already have a holes on the bottom for the Corsair psu.

rose isle
distant sequoia
#

Can I leave my fans at 100% rpm? Or will that drastically shorten their lifespans?

magic wave
#

I mean you can, they might wear out a little faster, and they'll be a bit noisy but the CIA won't stop you

distant sequoia
#

Noise doesn't bother me

#

But when I keep them at 30% my GPU runs at 82C and at 100% at 70C

shrewd juniper
#

Just use a fan curve

left sleet
#

At least that runs cooler than my rx 580

#

It goes up to 89 c when I'm playing minecraft(with shaders)

shrewd juniper
#

Use more aggressive curve?

?

#

Oh

shrewd juniper

Fan curve

left sleet

Ya I had to think for a sec

Yo does anyone know any good 140mm fans for a radiator that are quiet

I was thinking about silent wings

140mm pwm

#

But don't know if I should go for the high speed or just the pwm

magic wave
#

Arctic P14

I don't understand not going for PWM unless the motherboard specifically only has 3 pin headers, or the fan has to be powered by the power supply

I suppose there are exceptions thinkies

The fans included in my Lancool ii ragb are DC fans.. feals like a betrayal.

the pc i built for the parents have molex fans

beat that

rose isle

I will beat it.. with a stick, untill its dead

What I don't get is some motherboards have no trouble controlling DC fans while some can't do it at all

#

Might be related to speedfan and its obsolescence

timid carbon

You should ban rawr for giving molex fans to his parents. that woman carried you for 9 months and this is how you treat her?

@magic wave i can still play in 100c or it will damage my cpu

sorry for the mention

Wouldn't have suggested gammaxx 400 in particular just mentioning it would have worked

I mean if you can afford it and it fits in your case the 360 one is the best

i dont think 3 fans can fit my case

what case do you have?

rose isle

the front?

hard brook

Close glass

#

Case: DEEPCOOL MATREXX 50 ADD-RGB 4F Mid-Tower Case 4x120mm ADD-RGB Fans, Full-size Tempered Glass Side And Front Panel

rose isle
#

you will be bale to fit a 3 fan cooler in the front. But that case may also be why your CPU is so hot

hard brook
#

yah i agree with you but trust me the cpu is really bad

rose isle
#

you can get a 360 mm cooler and mount the radiator in front

hard brook
#

i just wish i can remove the front glass

shrewd juniper
#

You can fit a 360mm in that, because of the glass 240 could be better but I'd still say go 360mm

hard brook
#

wouldn't be better if i install 240m in top of the cpu ?

#

cuz its not glass

shrewd juniper
#

Honestly it's hard to say because of the glass front

#

I'd still guess 360 would squeeze out a win

hard brook
#

like that

#

il go with 360

#

and install it an front

Thanks guys for the help
