Is that an ssd thing?
Yeah
ssds need to be formatted
then does it do that automatically when i do this process or do I have to do an extra step?
they arent pre partitioned
it should
It will automatically partition it yes
okay, you can see where my confusion was coming from then
if it doesnt, its a 3 click fix anyway
thank you
My so was putting in an ssd over the weekend with a friend
They thought you just needed the cord that plugs into the psu
Well if it's a 2.5" it does
No like no sata cable
So it was m.2
M.2 and sata aren't mutually exclusive lol
Fair enough
That's why i asked
I forgot sata cables dotn come with the ssds, so I forgot to ask the friend to bring one over
there was a guy on here who was thought he had to plug his sata power into the motherboard
Yeah come with mobo or buy online lol
It was a cheap asf pre built
The friends dad has a box full of cables and stuff
So there's bound to be a sata cable in there
You can buy bulk sata cables for cheap on ebay also
Or cheap on Amazon
Aight question
Why is Chrome using 80% of a pentium silver n5030
I know it's a less than par cpu
But even my 4030u does better than this
Reason: Bad word usage
Reason: Too many infractions
@vast meadow Did I do this right?
Ehh can you uncrop it
How often do cpus go on sale? Is it worth it to wait or just buy with the rest of my components?
you are going to be waiting for a GPU anyway
I have a old one in my rig rn, but it's on its last leg.
$150 9700k from microcenter

Emm depends which drive is what size

Hello gentlemen
Reason: Bad word usage
Silicon Lottery is shutting down, you have until November to get your delid service done
what?
confusion
ohhhh
i thought you meant like silicon lottery as in perf difference wont exist
like they could quality control better or smthn
Well that's kinda part of the reason they're shutting down tbh, relative performance between good and bad samples is really tight and overclocking isn't showing as much results as boost tuning.
I just wanna clarify I can’t enable ram xmp on a z490 paired with a 10600k. Correct?
You can
Z series boards can OC ram
So XMP and manual OC is good
Hey, how can I wipe my PC without using windows's reset assistant?
Reason: Bad word usage
I followed everything in my power to clean my pc but it had no fruit, i screwed up with some partition stuff and now i wanna put a restart
But it wont even let me do that because my pc cant find the recovery environment and i tried every mrthod but it still doesnt work
Reinstall windows using a install disk or USB drive
I tried that, but ill try it again
That will work 100%
Yes i know of all this
Bwcause i spent most of my day yesterday doing this
I am going through it again as we speak
be sure to delete partitions and create new ones
deleting partitions is the one true way to make sure your storage is wiped clean
So if i wanna wipe everything clean i delete all of them?
Im supposed to have 2 drives
not exactly the true way to wipe it clean but as far as windows knows, it's wiped clean
you have 2 drives (drive 0 and drive 1), but your drive 1 has been split into 3 partitions
but yea delete all the partitions if you want to clean install windows
How do I do that
Click on the secondry drive and click New'
use the default size and it should format it
Im alreadg on the installation part though
Then do it in disk management
Disk management is iffy for wiping drives imo
Diskpart > list disk > select disk (which disk you want to wipe) > clean
Dban if you really want data off your drive
Dban is made to be easy to use, if you know what you're doing, use use any other drive wiping software
When I was much younger, and wanted to wipe data from a boot drive before selling, I'd long format then write copies of the movie top gun to the drive until full
Need a question answered.. theres this battlefield 2042+ 500gb ssd gen4 bundle for roughly 100bucks. Can my Aorus x470 Gaming 5 MB support gen 4 ssd?
It will support it just not running in gen 4, it will run at gen 3
Depending on how much battlefield costs the sdd might not be worth it
Game is 60. Ssd by itself is 65.
I need to start coming on here more. You guys save me money. Thanks Duck
Np lol
also, lots of people said they didn't received the game w that drive afaik
Oh wow. Dodge that bullet
I need help getting prepared for windows 11
hardware?
Can or is there anyone that can help me order the right part for my mother board please
you might not need an external tpm module
Most people don't need any new parts
@vernal cosmos yes
what hardware do you have
LGA 1151 TDA 35w
what
I can upgrade too intel core i7-7700T 2.9 GHz quad core TDP 35w

Can I send pic over this
dm me
@vast meadow since this do be hp prebuilt it no matter otherwise mobo vendor good
asus rolling out the bios updates
I5-7400t
For windows 11 you'll need a new pc
probs not
Yeah
They will

Unless they want 1 time update, 0 updates after and slower pc
Nah Im saying in my experiance, some prebuilts have a hardware tpm chip built in
Tpm not issue
They locked down cpu support?
Although windows 10 will be supported til 2025 so either wait or bug a new pc
Yeah ryzen 2000 and up and intel 8th gen and up
I did a test for what I need to run 11 and it says a new processor
Yeah well you can't upgrade the cpu in that to anything useful hence a new pc will be needed
But if it does the job just keep using windows 10
It will be supported for another 4 years
to be fair guys mobo could support 8th gen if hp has made a bios update available
it is LGA 1151
Okay
can you tell me exactly what hp prebuilt you have
Uhh no different socket
Afaik
All in one is basically a laptop
Also that ^
Oh its an all in one?
Right but they have t chip which is basically laptop
t chips arent soldered tho are they?
Some are
Hmmm
It depends on the exact model
I see
This one had like a metal cage and clips in from what I seen on you tube
not werf opening up an all in one and cpu swap
the cooler designed for only a specific level of heat output
swapping cpu gonna overheat it
unless you get a t chip
that is if hp has made a bios update available
which I doubt
and either way all in ones are super difficult to take apart and assemble
all in all you need a new pc
Windows 10 still has 4 years of official support and it'll probably keep going for a while after that, like windows 7 did
According to this thing it’s upgraded Abel
what thing?
I can upgrade to a intel core i7-7700T (Kabulake) 2.9 ghz quad core
thats still 7th gen
i5, i7, i3, i7264781248 whatever it could be doesnt matter
it can still only do 7th gen
No point you need an 8th gen chip minimum
the number after the dash is whats important
i7-(7)700T
the number in that bracket is whats the problem
that 7 stands for 7th gen
you need 8th gen
7th gen does not have integrated tpm, that's 8th gen and up
Tpm also not main problem tho falcie
It's another problem though
Something in the cpu physically, can't remember exactly, explained here
apparently if you have below 8th gen intel or ryzen 2000 you dont get updates
it upgrades to win 11 and then thats it
That too
no security updates or anyfing
And up to 40% slower
So I went and did a pc health check app from windows
You can run all the apps you want
if you want to use win 11 u need a new pc
Watch the vid it explains why they can't
or have a FAR FAR FAR FAR worse experience than win 10
My cpu intel core i5 7400t cpu 2.40

1:19 - The Windows 11 "...
Can you please for one second try to understand what we are trying to say?
It doesnt matter
Yes we know but it's not windows 11 compatible
if you want to use windows 11, you need a new pc
Why would should I need a new pic when all I have to do is get a new processor
because you need an 8th generation processor
which ur motherboard doesnt support
Because you cant get a new processor without getting a new motherboard and because you have an all in one or tiny oem pc you cant swap it as its proprietary
its upgradable to i7-7700T which is still 7th gen and hence still not good for win 11
if you upgrade the cpu, ur gonna need a new mobo, if you do that its not gonna fit in the current pc and most likely not gonna use the same power pins that ur current mobo has. this mean new pc case and new power supply
only thing you can keep is the ram
so yeah its basically a new pc

you see what the problem is @livid smelt ?
I do now that I’m on the windows upgrade side none of the new processor that I could upgrade to is still gonna run windows 11. Oh well it’s okay I’ll just run it till it dies
windows 10 still has support for another 4 years anyway
Perfects i hope windows change there start menu
image of an x99 board i found on ebay....
Well technically you could pin mod the mobo
Get it to be able to run 8th and 9th gen Intel
Reason: Bad word usage
Reason: Too many infractions
Ouch
Its an hp prebuilt
The bios is the problem
Nevermind then didn’t know it was an HP prebuilt
The vrm would probably combust with any 9th gen chip you'd want to use anyway
Pretty much every bios has parts that are encrypted, could still be possible to coffee mod a board like that, but not really worth it outside of doing it for the flex.

Is this the right place to ask a few newb esk motherboard nvme gpu related questions
ask away
I’ve got a b550 tomahawk running a ryzen 5600x, build is in progress, haven’t chosen a gpu yet and y’all’s answers may help with that, I want to run 3 separate pieces of storage, nvme 1tb for what I’ll be gaming, a ssd for operating system and general computerage, and a normal disk hard drive for movies, videos, etc. I know the b550 has 2 pcie ports and the upper port is gen4 compatible where as the 2nd is “lower capable”. I know that the and chipset has 20 gen 4 lanes and 16 go to the upper and 4 to the lower. I have no idea what that means though. My main question is should my gpu go on the top and nvme on the bottom, or vice versa. Am I going to lose the benefits of having nvme if it’s in the bottom slot, and if so, how big of an effect is it going to have on the gpu if I run it in the bottom slot?
Thank y’all
nvme 3.0 and 4.0 is not a big difference in perf really
I would keep the gpu in the top pcie slot
bottom slot has only 8 lanes if I remember correctly vs 16 to the top slot
They send it 4 and it’s wired as 8
also the bottom one is routed through the chipset
so higher latencies
tl;dr gpu top slot, storage can go wherever
dont worry too much into it
Got it, I have built a few computers, but it’s been atleast 8 years, and I thought I knew a fair amount back then, but this explosion of house and ssd has made this way more confusing
Gpu, not house
yeah ssds are confusing
BTW I would suggest giving windshields ssd tier list a read before buying ur ssd
Will do, thank you very much
SSD buying guide, maintained and updated by select editors - stoRAGE-consumer-SSD-buying-guide/SSD tier list.md at main · windshields/stoRAGE-consumer-SSD-buying-guide
there it is
Also lane sharing things
Bandwidth Shared: *The PCI_E3 slot will be disabled if the M2_2 socket (in x2 mode) and the PCI_E2 slot are used at the same time. *The PCI_E3 slot will downgrade from x4 to x2 if the PCI_E2 slot is used.
Ahhh right b550 things
Yes
Which means m.2_1 is pcie 4.0
And unaffected by any lane sharing
But m.2_2 is pcie 3.0
And can affect other pcie slots
how many lanes can the chipset do?
like in general
not board specific
b550 that is
Hmmm
and do you have a chart for x570 as well?
i think x570 has a gen 4 pcie x4 connection to the cpu vs gen 3 x4 for b550
yep
So while expanding my 12hr crash course in current day computer building, I believe I now understand the nvme pcie thing a little better. so my nvme chip isn’t installed in the actual pcie port like a graphics card, there’s a separate space under the lower heat sink/cover on the tomahawk board correct?
Most consumer NVMe drives use the M.2 slot, like how graphics cards use PCIe slots. The M.2 slot looks something like this, and connects to the CPU through the PCIe bus, usually x2 or x4 lanes.
Makes way more sense now, thank you
Can anyone give me some instruction on how to use DBAN to wipe a hard drive?
less cores?
The amount of cores doesn't matter. 6 higher performance cores vs 8 less performance cores
oooohhh
5600x might even be better than 3700x in multi core, I forget
Wish I knew that
5600x has WAY better single core
I guess...
Never built a pc before so learning
will I see a VAST difference In preformance?
I play a lot of Minecrafy
I can still get a lot of frames tho
Yeah
you think I could run 200+ frames?
aight
Well Without good graphics or shaders
I play on servers but nothing heavily modded. however I may try and play a little modded
okay
I was able to play crazy craft on a 3rd gen i5 and 1030
Idk about cyberpunk or the new assassind creed
I dont plan on doing that
Afaik basically any other game you'll be fine in
afaik?
As far as I know
Poe?
You'd be fine with a potato to play that
My cpu has 1.7 ghz
And a quad core 2.6ghz cpu
Thats reassuring
Dam Thanks A lot dude Really appreciate it
I have learned a couple things
Happy to
No
One second
Ok sk
According to Google 3700x has better multi core performance
By 5-15%
But
Single core is more important for gaming
10/10 times 5600x over 3700x for gaming
And its cheaper?
Whats the difference in gaming preformance in a %
is that a game where 90frames is respectable?
The amount is irrelevant
Just the difference is what I'm showing
The general rule of thumb is 60fps
Atleast that's what mine is, I'm not sure if others share it
I mean that is like a 10 iSh % difference
About
I Mean, That isnt Terrible
With a 1650 super not a 2060 ti
it would be less that 10%
2080ti
Ye
Eh
Honestly either cpu is overkill for 1650s
I woulda gone with like a used 2600
Maybe a 10400
I plan on upgrading when it gets better
I downgraded bcuz a used 1660 super is like 500
400
Well It is my birthday in acouple weeks and I had A little money
Ty
And Well Ill prob get a 3060 in like a year when the prices are normal or semi normal
Good luck
They Wonnnt bE As Baddddd right )"
Ik they will be lol
but ya never know
Plus I got that 32 gig ram
Ykk what im sayin with that dual stick ripjaws 16X2
32gig with a 1650s system...
Like I said I plan on upgrading AT some point
Interesting choice ig
What is that Overkill?
I have 16 in my 3060 ti build
Ig it depends what you do
It was like very little more
Wait
i dont mind FOR DOuble the ram
3200 maybe hold on
Not awful
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memor
thats what it is
I think its 3200
Yea Ik 32 gb be WAYYYY to much but I mean i know someone with a dual 3090 with 128gb
It isn't wayyy too much
But 16 is the general rule for a pc your caliber. If it wasn't much extra it can't hurt
Not bad to have the extra leg room
AOTS
Attack on titans?
Attack on titans
rip jaws
For what cpu
ripjaws aren't the best option ngl
Assuming it's like ryzen or at least 7th gen intel
Question
Why does the 2990wx still go for 1k+ used when 5950x beats jt even in multi core? Is there some other benefit of the extra cores other than overall mc performance?
Ah
Extra pcie lanes still etc
ye
The PCIe lanes are the huge reason they are still so expensive
Very useful for workstations that need lots of lanes
I'll fight you 😤 don't dis my ripjaws
Although I only have them in my Lil portable PC
i think they are good
Only in the us and some countries
lol
Ripjaws FAR better vale in some places
In a lot of countries it's the cheapest tbf
yeah
Its a thing, 3990x is quad channel, 3995wx is octa
I was already corrected lel
selling for 1k+?
or listed
Such a good use of all those Threads on a 5950x
Compressing "Images" at a trailblazing speed of course!
i think i fried my ram. what's weird is hyperx ngenuity recognizes both sticks (i fried one) but only the other one is in use. btw it's hyperx fury rgb ddr4 3200 2x8
da fug did u do
ok to be fair i did fry a E5-2630 and a supermicro mobo before
so not surprising
i went to install more of the same stick, i didn't even touch the fried one lol
were you trying to install it along side the fried stick
Pro tip if one is ducked

Hey can someone help me
My pc says "163- time & date not set"
It kept turning the fans off mid use so I unplugged the power, unplugged the fan, plugged it back it, made sure all the plugs inside were secure and then booted it and it gave me that
@ me when replying please
Set the time and date?
Idk bout the fans, dying header/hub mb
Drawing too much power using a fan splitter?
My bad I didnt see it until now
I set the time and date, saved the changes, rebooted it, and got the recovery screen

Uhh do the troubleshooting in pins of #windows-ios
Where do I find the pins I'm on mobile
I'm boutta give up on this damn thing and get a new one
I looked thro It and found nothing 🙁
Go to #windows-ios first, it's pinned in that channel
Ik
I'll just copy it
General fix for random windows problems
From an admin command prompt or powershell, run:
sfc /scannow
If that doesn't work, try:
dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Then, try running sfc again.
Repeat as necessary
I literally cannot open anything it sends me straight to the recovery screen
It goes from bios for a few seconds, black, then recovery
doe sanyone know if ddr4 pc4 28800 ram is compaibale with the z370 chipset? i cant gind that info anyhwere @here
@here won't work, but also, that's because the spec that matters would be ddr4 3600, pc4 doesn't really matter, 28800 is just the frequency multiplied by 8. Z370 boards should be fine with ddr4 3600 memory
Recovery should have an option for you to boot into safe mode w command prompt iirc
oh ok sorry and thank you wasnt sure if it was sizw like m.2
Only the ddr generation (and sodimm vs dimm) matter for the physical size and pinout and such
gotcha and yes it 3600mhz cl16
Beyond that there's sometimes chipset limitations on frequency, and CPU imc limitations at times
But should be okay
ok sweet i ordered it with out even thinking bou that. thanks for your help!
Oh boi
Ignore the desk lmao I had to move everything
Thought you meant windows recovery mode
That's annoying
Wait
@scenic iris just f10 setup then
It was in the recovery screen and then I fixed some connections and got this
Then what
Apply defaults and exit might work
But the PC being HP makes sense for such annoying things xD
Yeah I went to the support for a 5 minute issue and all they did was try and get me into a new computer
HP is annoying, proprietary things
Drive issues it seems
How can I fix it I just wanna play some gta 😭
if you manage to get in update all your drivers and pray that fixes it
How can I get in man
Wym
like on the screen?
At which stage
the one youre at now
No theres no options
try restart your pc
try hard drive?
Nah didnt work I got sent to the recovery screen again
I'll just go down the list and update you when I'm done
None of em worked 🙁
not sure then sorry :/
Ay thanks for trying man :)
I mean it's possible your hard drive or SSD is failing
That's what I meant by drive issue
If drive is dying, windows might be getting corrupted and such
ssds dont really "start to" fail, they just die, and are generally dead from factory
Fair, as a side note, have you see this yet? @limber dragon
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/are-ssds-really-more-reliable-than-hard-drives/
Im going off of what people bring into my shop to get fixed
Intel i5 10400f sorry for wait
Makes sense, but saw that article earlier today, brought some more interesting to me, and caused me to also believe in SSD failure rate as closer to HDD failure rates than first thought.
data center/cloud storage ssd vs consumer ssd are vastly different use cases
Backblaze also talks about how you can still proactively check SSDs before they fail with looking at SMART data, and even just reading some of the SMART stat attributes that are associated with SSDs, it's not that far off to think it might have some signs of failure similar to a HDD. Of course, it'd be pretty different.
consumers arent reading/writing 24/7
Most consumers won't realize a drive is dying until it's too late
that too, and I've seen hard drives tend to get super slow when they're failing, vs ssds just 💀
I'm currently trying to recover data from someone's usb WD drive at something like 500 KB/s
I should probably check, but afaik consumer v enterprise SSD is often more about the controller than the nand, bar the specialized stuff that's like 3dxpoint or drives that are just slc made for caching
And also need to check what specific SSDs backblaze deployed
And I believe nand starting to fail could give symptoms that might seem like hdds with data corruption and such, yaknow, charge trap no longer holding enough electrons and therefore not registering the bit for example
Although theoretically wear leveling and such should make it hard to wear out a single cell like that
Found some interesting bits here that might be of interest to you about pre-ssd-failure-signs (about half way down the page)
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/how-reliable-are-ssds/
I'm still looking for what drives backblaze use to see if backblaze data can actually be applied to what we do or not
Backblaze publishes their data often - enterprise drives ofc
Just the SSDs might actually be consumer drives, since they really don't say, all I've found so far is
Our operations team takes advantage of the benefits and savings of SSDs wherever they can, using them in every place that’s appropriate other than primary data storage. They’re particularly useful in our caching and restore layers, where we use them strategically to speed up data transfers. SSDs also speed up access to B2 Cloud Storage metadata. Our operations teams is considering moving to SSDs to boot our Storage Pods, where the cost of a small SSD is competitive with hard drives, and their other attributes (small size, lack of vibration, speed, low-power consumption, reliability) are all pluses.

so i see a lot of used ryzen b550 motherboards that are cheap but doesn't have a wifi antenna with it. I was wondering if i can buy something cheap like this https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Motherboard-Transmitter-Thinkcentre-Omnidirectional/dp/B08CNK9BGF/ref=sr_1_11?crid=LOHWY0GHKZX9&dchild=1&keywords=wifi+antenna+for+pc&qid=1633220509&s=electronics&sprefix=wifi+antenna+%2Celectronics%2C191&sr=1-11
will it just work or do i need a certain antenna for whatever mobo i get?
Me personally bought a mother board that camew with an antenna BUT I mean it should work
i think there wouldn't be any problems but i just wanted to make sure here
However Don't quote me on that and wait for someone thats not talking out their butthole to give their opinion
I am
For the most part
worse case scenario i buy one of those usb wifi adapters lol
kk
Meh, ymmv
@wind nest my refurb Mobo didn't come with antennas, bought my own on Amazon, works, but is ofc slower than just Ethernet
Curious. Anyone have any experience with the NZXT N7?
I'm trying to come up with a white build and Gigabyte INSISTS on adding some stupid color flair to their white mobos
If you need a cheap b550 with WiFi just get the pro vdh wifi, and I've never seen one than wouldn't come with an antenna
It's decent just overpriced
asrock oem
Reason: Bad word usage
It's fine tho
what do you guys think about the ryzen 5 5600g apu as in price to performance
for iGPU without a dGPU
If you really need a capable iGPU for gaming, then it's pretty much the best one.
If you just need an iGPU for redundancy, you probably should pick up a 11600k instead.
You also probably want to wait out another month or so for Alder Lake. Those chips should have decent iGPU
only thing with 11600k is more expensive :/
5600G and 11600k are both $220
At microcenter
Of course, a comparable B560 motherboard will probably cost a little more, but it also performs better, for the most part
Oh, 11600k doesn't seem to get a stock cooler either, so that's a pickle
That's micro center prices tho and kinda need better cooler and really you want a z590 boards
Yeah ik. I'm not sure I agree with needing Z590 boards though. You can definitely get some stinky B560, but it seems like there are at least some good B560 boards
It's just kinda that the b560s for enough of a 11600k is basically z590 price but em k chip on b board just kinda sad
11600 non k should also be fine tbh
Not available in the us tho :/
Also b560 boards allow OC now
Yeah, AMD boards are way cheaper than Intel at comparable quality though
Is the 11600 non k not available in the US? I didn't know that
That's just memory oc
And nope
Overclocking tax
Damn, really throws some water on my perception that Intel is better for budget now
Maybe 10600k for $200 sales are good
Can you even get decent Z490 boards for $100 at this point?
Nope lol
For shame
You can't barely get decent b560s in that price range
So... 10850k is pretty good for high-midrange I guess. Not sure why I'd bother with RKL for consumer though
Cheapest decent b560
Yeah 10850k nice around 350$
Cheaper than B550 pro VDH 🤪
That one has wifi for 5$ more tho lol
But I'm guessing it won't be enough to handle the extra power reqs for RKL
Ohh 10$ more but still
Rkl?
But nah it's not for more than 65w cpu
Rocket Lake
Ahh
Decent b560 range btw
Might as well get z590
Disappointing
Just underscores how disappointing Rocket Lake is for consumers lol
They look like they'd be nice for budget chips compared to overpriced Zen3, but then you get hit with board costs :/
I recently bought a gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro (Rev. 1) motherboard from Newegg. I was wondering if any of you know or know where I can find the max amp rating for the fan headers.
My case fans are rated at 0.45A and I'm planning to split one header into 4 another 3 so I wanna make sure I don't overload the headers
I already looked in the manual and on Newegg and Gigabyte's site and it didnt say anything about amperage on any of them
Nah 11400 is only scalped in us, it's good everywhere else, obvs popular enough, was 180 for ages
Usually 1 amp but just get a sata powered fan hub
Yeah I guess 11400 is pretty decent
11500 aight too
uh what's the difference between b550, b560, and z590
B550 is amd, b560 and z590 are intel, z590 allows you to overclock the cpu b560 doesn't
No problem, x570 has more pcie 4.0 lanes but usually b550 boards have better vrms bar a few very expensive x570s
Vrms are power delivery btw
so would b550 be better for more budget side?
Yup
which b550 motherboards would you guys recommend for under 200 cad (250 usd)
cpu would be amd 5 5600g
no gpu for now
Do you need WiFi?
no wifi needed
Okay
Fun fact, the WiFi model is cheaper than the non WiFi rn
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/PDsnTW/msi-b550m-pro-vdh-wifi-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-b550m-pro-vdh-wifi this will do, https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/9PDkcf/msi-mag-b550m-mortar-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-mag-b550m-mortar this for bit more premium, better upgrade path if you fancy going to 5800x/5900x but I'd grab the first
oh ok thank you
Np
cpus already use gold pins soo
it wouldn't work for that reason
the who reason we use semiconductors is because of the semi part
too much power would break it or smthn?
since it only conducts electricity sometimes, that allows us to make logic gates
electricity just flows through, there won't be any logic to it
thanks
Would just be "on" or "off" cpu lol
then what would be the next advancement for cpus?
since theoretically 3nm is the closest they can become
the capacitors or whatever
Smaller semiconductors/transistors
Noo
@burnt spear old and out of date image but still, to give you an idea of how not-simple it is
ima be honest
Intel is moving to 20 angstroms soon enough which is 2nm
that's a transistor on 35nm node
really? i was having a convo with my brother a bit ago and we ended up going to google
well 35nm min gate length or whatever, close nuff
ibm already made a 2nm chip
but well
these measurements are wacky
Gold isn't the most conductive metal either
different people measure gate length and such differently
wait silver is?
Silver, then copper, then gold
i thought copper was just used more often since its cheaper
It is, and it's also more conductive
Gold doesn't corrode, copper and silver pins would get covered in a thin oxide layer over time and not form a reliable connection anymore
That wasn't a stupid question, it was a very thoughtful question
You had a piece of information, made a possible connection, and decided to find out more
yes, did a good thing
now you can coat the pins in gold so you can form a reliable connection
Copper is more conductive than gold at tiny scales, that's why we still use copper for the tiny interconnects on chips
Cobalt is used in some places though, I believe mostly to interconnect silicon surfaces to conductors
We also use copper in things that can be shielded from the elements, like cables
Also the "node size" doesn't really represent a physical dimension. The current 7nm nodes don't actually refer to a 7nm gate length. It's kinda complicated
The future holds novel transistor topologies and layouts. We've been using FinFETs for a while, we'll be using GAAFETs (or RibbonFETs, or nanosheets, same concept, different branding)
That's why Intel changed their naming. Their gates are almost the same size even though they're measured differently.
New semiconductor materials would also be nice. Carbon nanotubes and buckyballs are great. Just not manufacturable (yet)
What do you think of the plastic CPU concept? Kinda interesting but limited in use imo
Surprisingly while Intel is going GAA for their '3nm' node, tsmc is staying on finfet for '3nm'
It’s an interesting concept
I wonder how it would affect prices of CPUs
Maybe could make them more consistent with binning
Yeah, it's not a huge surprise though. TSMC is forging forward with consistent execution. GAAFETs require IP to be redesigned, so waiting a bit longer allows IP vendors more time to design IP for GAAFET based nodes for their foundry partners
Intel was all in house, and will still be mostly in house (for now) so that's not as much of an issue
Tsmc does have to work with lots of different customers
Customers and "partners"
Lots of companies make IP compatible with TSMC nodes
So you don't have to design every single thing on a SOC, you can integrate another company's design for some aspect
Like Xilinx (soon to be part of AMD) makes lots of IP for TSMC nodes. Like PCIE PHYs.
So if you're a small company making your own chips, and you need a PCIE interface but don't have the resources to design your own PHYs, you can license from a company like Xilinx who will sell you the IP to integrate a PHY into your chip design
Hm
Yeah, that's another big thing. New nodes for TSMC are basically driven by Apple. Apple demands new nodes every year, and GAAFET is a significant change. It's maybe not guaranteed that they could have a working node with GAAFET by the time Apple wants N3
I wonder what path tsmc will take to integrate in gaafet into their lineup
Like make n3+ gaafet?
That is an interesting choice
Heck, wonder if there'll any improvement beyond GAAFET
This is 100% true because the companies have to bid on fab time, and Apple bids the highest
Yup
@ember marten any ideas or news or rumors on what's beyond GAAFET? Perhaps someone creating a octagonal transistor?
I don't really have any insight. I don't think there's going to be much beyond GAAFET for silicon. We'll see different numbers of sheets, different widths, etc. But the concept is the same; gate on all 4 sides of the channel, and you can't really increase that
Beyond GAAFET will probably be novel materials (eg carbon nanotubes)
But GAAFETs will be real nice for a while to go. You can really control a lot of the device characteristics with different configurations, so we'll see even more distinct, application specific transistor performance, which is largely a good thing
lmao
elon mucks is probably trying to do that with neuronthink
Does anyone else own a Tuff x570 plus motherboard (and/or would be able to take a minute to help) Mines been running fine for over a year now and all of a sudden it won’t boot. Just got back from a trip to my PC just failing to boot
Still fairly new. Built about a year ago. A white led(gpu “error”) stays on when starting up. Tried relocating to the other pcie port, new cables. My graphics card is running (heating up, and fans are running). Just wanted to know what options I had other than buy a new card
cleared cmos?
I know this is a very dumb question but I was wondering how do I know how many case fans I can plug into a motherboard in this case I will be using 3 pin case fans and more then likely going to be grabbing a b550 aorus elite ax v2
Technically, there is no limit, if you use fan hubs. But, if you want to know how many fans you can directly connect to your motherboard, look at how many PWM connectors it has
Alight thank you another question, if I were to get a fan hub there is a way to control the speed of the fans correct?
I believe fan hub controllers but dunno how they work or exist
most fan hubs connect to a PWM connector on your motherboard and
Some like na-fc1 have a physical knob for rpm
and you control all the fans connected to them through your motherboard
Which is fun
That sounds interesting
Gotcha thank you
@dense frost because those knobs aren't on a tiny overbuilt fan controller
Reason: Bad word usage
Reason: Too many infractions
Ryzen 5 4600 is not a thing for desktops?
Did you mean either 4650g? Or 3600?
4600h
ya
yess
Right wouldn't consider that upgrading your pc but anyway continue with your question lol
well , i replaced my pc with a new laptop
i bought it 2016
it was i5 6th gen 8 gb ram and gtx 1650 super
Nice
Would the 10100f stock cooler be sufficient enough?
Yeah not very pleasing on the eye tho
As long as it gets the job done, im not too concerned about how it looks
quick confirmation question. If I put in a 3200 and a 3000 MHz ram stick in my mobo, will the mobo decrease the speed of the 3200 to match the lower speed stick?
Yes
Just make sure the dies are compatible
gotcha, thx
I mixed incompatible ram kits
Corrupted windows
Had to wipe both my drives to fix it
yikes, i just recently had to reinstall windows too from corruption lmao
Wait, my windows is acting up too...
Coincidence with the timing of windows 11 launch? Maybe
Nah mine was like 4 months agk
Caused by conflicting ram
Shh I'm trying to spread conspiracy theories
Bezos is an alien, that's why he's so obsessed with space. Plus bald.
Can confirm
Bro its the aliens
im telling you
they causing cosmic ray bit flipping
That would be a pretty simple thing to do in theory, just toss some energy at a star and watch the fireworks
What is the best CPU (for gaming) I can put in a b460?
quick question, does the asus prime b450-a have tmp 2.0?
Not on the motherboard, no. It would be built into the cpu. You need a 2000 series minimum.
You could in theory put an 11900k on there, it just won't work at its full potential.
Any 10th or 11th gen cpu will do.
11gen fits lga 1200?
yeah thats fine
can someone recommend a cpu and a motherboard for a rtx 3060 ti?
What's your budget and what are you planning to use for? Like gaming or
Okie, country?
egypt
Hmn I can't really help with that, maybe check newegg, they do ship there
aight thank you.
Something B560 with a 10400, 10600, 11400, 11500, or 11600 would be ideal in your budget with shipping in mind
ty
Should I sell my 3700x and msi x470 gaming plus mobo for something better to go with my 3080ti? Gaming at 1440p 165hz.
You could throw a 5600x in that mobo I think
Nah i wouldn't 3700x should do fine
I'd wait for 12th gen/13th gen intel or ryzen 6000
That's the same mobo I use, and it's a great board. No need to upgrade, there's no features interesting enough to warrant going from your current setup to one generation higher. 3700X is still solid, especially at 1440p.
Do be warned that b460 doesnt have mem OC support. Mem is locked to pretty low speeds that do significantly affect perf
What a good mobo for a ryzen 5 5600x that’s 150 or less
msi b550 pro vdh (wifi), asus tuf b550, are safe bets rest depend on what country/currency youre talking about b550 aourus elite/pro are also decent shouts most of the time
If available, is an Ethernet cable always better than WiFi?
Shouldn't, but sometimes it ties the key to Mobo, so you could tie key to Microsoft account just in case
Unless the Ethernet cable is broken
well assuming its working lol
(the cable could just be broken if you get like 3kbps on Ethernet but like 5mbps on wifi)
That kinda thing
Sometimes Ethernet port/controller dead
assuming nothing broke, always better
I just picked up a B450 Tomahawk and really like it, got mine for about 150, may be able to get a better deal on one
You paid 150 for a b450 tomahawk in 2021

Friend just bought one refurb for like $60 for a super budget build
Ive been obsessed with the X79 and X99 platform for the past year, and hte onyl builds ive done were n tyhose platforms
wow i had a stroke halfway through there
I really want to get one of those Chinese X99 boards
Actually Ive worked with them
As long as you know which are actually good, those good boards, are pretty good lol
They can be finicky and weird sometimes, but thosep articular ones work well. Im talking about the X99 TF mainly, and the others that Huananzhi offers. Jingsha also offers good x99 boards
Got selected for a shuffle bundle with an amd mobo which I have never looked into before as I’ve always researched intel. Any thoughts on the “GIGABYTE X570 AORUS ELITE ATX AMD Motherboard”?
no usb c apparently
how do i enable tpm 2.0 on asus prime b450-a?
They're actually decent mobos
Ew
87 is the new high lol
I’m getting a little worried now that it’s hovering around 83
what cpu?
It shouldn’t be tasked that much with CS Go, I mean my case is shit, prebuilt
what build?
also the pre built i had had a heatsink worse than a stock
i got like 88 on a 3600 playing valorant
Ooh sorry I haven’t responded lol
So, I have a brand new 5600X CPU, brand new B450 Tomahawk Max mobo, brand new 16 gigs G Skills Ripjaws DDR4 3400 Ram, and an RX580 GPU, along with a 1 tb Hard Drive, no SSD yet, and a 600 watt EVGA power supply
pics of your case and fan setup?
It seems like gigabytes mobos have a lot of QC issues
Are gigabyte mobos reliable
Vrm thermal performance looks promising
I think you need to look at it on a per model basis.
Sometimes a manufacturer makes a bad product, sometimes they do good.
model wide and in general way gigabyte mobos seems to have a lot of QC isssues
where are you getting your data?
Even their flagship x570 aorus master has QC issues
Amazon 1* rating, reddit
There were many cases like mobo dying in 3 months, 6 months or so
I agree there is no brand without a single QC issue
It's even impossible to have it
But it's looks concerning with gigabytes qc
Again I m a big fan of their vrm performance and the price range they are providing but QC is the only setback for me
Oh, apparently thei RMA process is very bad.
anyone who has a bf450 motherboard know if it can support the Ryzen 5 5600g?
or ryzen 7 3800 XT?
currently have a ryzen 5 2600 if that helps?
you need to check the specific motheboard site
but it should be able to
thank you!
X570 aren't really flagship tbh apart from the like 300-400$ boards, b550 is usually better
In my experience yes
I was saying as an example
As that's their costly mobo
I am looking forward to buy b550 master
But QC issues is the only step back for me
Which b450? Technically all can just need to update bios but i wouldn't trust some boards, also why 5600g when 5600x same price and better just doesn't have integrated graphics
Though there isn't any other mobo in that range with that sort of vrm performance
Msi b550 gaming edge wifi
B550 rog f
Are other options i can think of off the top of my head
MSI tomahawk b450
Yeah you could stick a 5600x on there with a bios update
so i now need a surge protector Xd, my apartment has been having power cuts so often
Does any one know if ASUS Prime B550M-A WiFi will support a AMD Ryzen 5 5600G without upgrading the bios?
It probably will, depends how long the board has been sitting on the shelf tbh, but the b550m lets you update it without the cpu working first using bios flash
That's supposed to be a button the on the motherboard, I haven't been able to see it on all the pictures I found
Is it possible to get TPM support on a ASUS z170 mobo?
Searching for options on how to upgrade for windows 11
If you look at the manual it will show you what to do, it says like "usb method" i believe
Ehh what cpu are you running? No point getting tpm if your CPU isn't supported
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHz 3.50 GHz
Yeah. your CPU isn't supported by windows 11
So i couldnt just upgrade CPU i would also need a Mobo
Yep new CPU motherboard and you'd want new ram most likely, what ram do you have?
Why you need a whole new pc? And what's your definition of budget?
@glossy wave but why a whole new pc? Why not keep your gpu case power supply etc? What's in the rest of your build
Ill check it out
Thanks, mobo and cpu
sorry mt.. yea just mobo and cpu reccomendations would help
yrs
Can you send me your pc in https://pcpartpicker.com/list
Does windows 11 support the 10100f?
Yes
@balmy cloak https://pcpartpicker.com/list/G6fyJf
Can I return mb if the bios is incompatible with cpu?
Documentation specifies it needs to b able to boot therefore cpu required
@glossy wave i would do this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wDHGK3
What motherboard do you have and what cpu?
ASUS Prime B550M-A WiFi and AMD Ryzen 5 5600G
Yeah if you can't manage to update your bios, yeah you can
Thanks
