Is there some kind of compendium you dammed wizards learn this stuff?
uhhh
We're nerds
pc partpicker helps
I used pcpart to make the build, but I'd like to know what I'm talking about before I shell out the 3K

show us the link
nice build
Ryzen for OC isn't it?
Both can overclock just you can get similar or better performance for less money
Intel OCs more
@dusk oracle I may change it then. Still trying to find a good balance of things.
Always do research as well for what you plan on playing and/or doing
That's where I'm kind of stuck
I like overwatch and Battlefield and Skyrim, cod on occasion, maybe something like prop hunt and doom. Fallout modded
@naive pendant π
@grizzled holly ?
@grizzled holly did you at the wrong person or something?
how high of a overclock can the 9700k go?
Really 5ghz all core is what you should expect
depends on cooling, but with a good aio id say that
Could thermal paste be a cause for my pc to start for 30 seconds then it shuts down? I need to apply more but i dont have any and dont have a way of getting any. Does anyone know of any alternatives?
Amazon prime some mx-4 1 day shipping
Always a pea size dot of thermal paste and if it is conductive thermal paste and you got some on your board good chance that could be the reason if you believe it is the thermal paste
I mean that it is fading. I dont have any to replace it and i was hoping for some homemade options
Not to nitpick - pea size is a little outdated - 1-2 lines, x with dots, etc or manually spread is more effective - but it's a pretty small difference. Lots of techtubers have tested, der8aur, GN, etc
you can't make anything at home that will be suitable
just get some thermal paste π
i'm feeling generous today too
if you're in the US i will order you a cheap tube off newegg POG
Ok i was just wondering because ive seen people use toothpaste with salt and other things
i would strongly recommend NOTdoing that
Ok
Well pea size still works in this day and age cause i still do it and have great thermals
Haha as much as I'd love to see another lipstick, mayonaise, chocolate, denture cream test - I can't recommend that with a straight face π
you can with a crooked face lol
Thermal paste i am using as well is Deepcool Z9 which is non conductive and is pretty good
i remember the one time i accidentally ran my 6700k with no cooler on it, it did not like that
~10 sec from power on it had enough and hit thermal protection lol
Haha yep, though - when posting that pic, as much of a classic as it is, I'd clarify that it's a bit old, afaik the guru3d paste roundup as of late is decent.
TBH - paste isn't that big of a deal. Just don't conductonaut a ryzen or put pate under the cpu etc.
i think it's somewhat safe to say that thermal paste is going to create a difference that's probably within margin of error of measuring eqiupment
yea
i mean unless you're in some crazy lab, which for all i know these review sites may have access to all that
Ya, that's totally possible - I just tell people anything in the top tier of stuff is pretty much identical for casual-enthusiast use.
that is much more succinct than what i was trying to say
lol
I personally recommend MX-4 the most because it's definitely well into the "good enough" range in terms of thermal conductivity - but it also spreads very easily unlike say- kryonaut (not even that hard to spread)
But I'm talking like - first build ever kind of recommendation
time to reinstall windows on my shiny new 970 evo plus and my 3900x, feelsgoodman that it booted up fine the first time where i usually forget something blatantly obvious like the cpu fan header
first build ever most coolers has thermal paste on it already
The low viscosity of MX-4 eliminates a lot of possible user error in application amount or technique. They could squirt out the entire tube and any decent mounting pressure would push out the extra anyway. Non conductive , non capacitive, so less worry. AFAIK - also has no "cure time".
FWIW i went with the ASUS crosshair hero re: the motherboard discussion yesterday
RGB
C8H? TBH - I get all these discussions mixed up, sorry if I don't immediately remember haha.
Nice
sorry, yeah we were discussing power delivery on x570 motherboards shortly yesterday
Oh ya, lol
i am a bit salty cuz MSI is releasing a MEG motherboard with ZERO rgb BUT the high end power delivery AND a right angle 24 pin connector
but i'm not ripping this apart again
I was debating explaining more about how and when VRM temp under load is important - but I felt like you understood my intended message as is.
yes, i did, and it got me the info i needed
π
incidentally this (maybe it was the $700 crosshair one, i forget the name) that was towards the top of that VRM temp chart
and yeah i know that was just one factor to consider
There's also something to be said for a user just wanting to spend more on capacity for piece of mind as long as they're well informed of relevant performance impacts, the confidence in which we can predict reliability - all that.
I just try to step in when it seems like someone feels like they absolutely need a mega overkill VRM board to satisfy the goals that they have specified.
yeah, 100% that is more what i was leaning towards
i am an informed customer but sometimes i'm just like...ok enough of looking at webpages
i worked in sales for a few years and routinely had to really fish out what people wanted cuz they had zero idea, or really unrealistic expectations
It's a really complex aspect of motherboard design though - one of those things where you can't just look at a single spec - or even a high res photo and data sheet of a board to be 100% confident.
so i can work from the other way to find what i need, if that makes sense
for sure, i'm not an EE, but i am going to school for mechanical engineering
Nor do I think that one has to personally test a product to be able to make condident predicitons about a board's performance characteristics.
Nice - CompE here - I wanted to go ME originally, most of my hobbies/interests are more ME vs CompE tbh.
i trust Steve a lot cuz he shows his very thorough testing methodolgy and gives (at least for me) enough info from which to draw my own conclusions
HW unboxed steve? or GN?
sorry, GN
i know there are tons of great youtubers, i just like tech Jesus lol
Both are good, but their attidues towards strict adherence to proper data collection and open-ness to constructive criticism are what earn them an A+ in my book.
he was really nice when i sent in my 2080ti for the big thing he did when they released
and he replied to every single email which i was shocked, even though half of them were just me making sure my GPU would make it back to EVGA before the RMA window expired and i was charged for a second 2080ti π
cuz mine was FRIED when i got it
What 2080 ti thing? Ah- the initial failure media frenzy?
yeah
I got mine in feb I think - Micron memory, very pleased with it tbh. Everything now is samsung - which is fine, just have to work with it.
Also a huge EVGA fan
the RMA'ed one has been perfect and i beat the crap out of it
What model?
xc ultra
i was considering selling it locally for a ftw or kingpin but that seems like a lot of work for what will net minor performance gains
My cc ultra is pretty stable at 1985MHz so what's a couple hundred extra MHz
Nice, ya - the EVGA black, and gaming are the only non-a 2080 ti's iirc. THe overclock.net chart shows the ftw3 non ultra as non-a, but that seems to be an error. Did you update the vbios to the 320w power limit? EVGA released an official supported update
UPDATE: These are now legacy updates as it only needed to be applied on the first shipping cards. All new shipping cards now have these updates.Β Β Updates:Increases maximum power target setting to 130% (Improved overclocking performance)______________________________________...
I had no idea of that BIOS update
I'll get that installed asap cuz I'm definitely not reaching thermal limits
What's your current power limit? I hit 373W with aggressive cold ambient cooling, but need to stay under 40C load for 2200 core 2050 mem usually - depends on the test. I want to aim for 3.5sec GPUpi 3.3
I was using precision x1 and just cranking it til it was unstable
Do you bench much? Should move this to #graphics-cards or #overclocking I guess haha
Sure thing
@naive pendant why would you get the crosshair 8 hero which i have explained is realistically worse than any mobo by any company other than asus on x570 and has the worst soc vrm of any board on am4 period which is terrible if you want to push ram and hit an imc based limit...
lol
you are very adversarial
and no, i don't go through thousands of messages on a discord to find your specific replies, sorry, unless you're tagging someone
There is a lot of things he finds that are the worst lol
yeah, it probably doesn't warrant a response but i did anyway
@naive pendant im only opposed to people making poor buying decisions and the one you are making is one of the worst
neat
thanks for you input, i'll put it in the trash where it belongs
the crosshair viii while rated for a high amperage (which doesn't matter as no am4 part is power hungry enough for that to matter) it is a single soc phase (the worst of any am4 mobo) and 7 vcore phases with normal switching frequencies (the cheapest x570 board period is 4x2 plus 2)
@naive pendant lets not be rude please
donβt be rude my g
@urban ferry how am i being rude?
lmao, i'm not even going to bother saying anything beyond look at your tone and how you approach people and then ask yourself why
these are messages... you cant really have a tone in a message unless you are using some sort of tone indicators or emojis...
Do you guys know a cheap motherboard that supports i5 9400f
β β β π₯ gamer time tone β β
What's the switching frequency range on the C8H? I agree that the max current delivery potential has some comfortable headroom for all but extreme use.
im back
it is 400khz switching frequency if im not mistaken
Max 400 KHz? That would be surprisingly low - but I'd be interested to learn more - and if so - what Asus's rationale was.
again, it is just a bad board
dont recommend it periof
asus doesn't really have a good x570 lineup rn
What would your vote be for a board in that price class?
i explained why to you multiple times but when you give bad advice people believe it and now this dude is conviced iw ti good in spite of reason and is going to buy a $300 board with a worse vcore than a $150 board and a worse soc than a $50 board
@naive pendant So here is the million dollar question....Do I get the i9-9980XE or do I wait and see if the i9-7980XE will drop down more in price?
Dont want to redo all my system though.
hell, you can get a faster cpu with mobo and all the parts for a new loop and still save money going current gen tr kek
Main difference is the mature process + solder TIM on the sky x refresh -
This seems like a case where the best choice can easily be decided by the best deal one can find.
going intel for multi core performance is like going bulldozer for floating point performance
Pretty sure when the 10th series pops in the price for the 7980XE will drop more
Also there is black friday coming up so you never know
the i9-7980XE is about $300 to $400 cheaper right now, but will it go down more is what I am wondering.
Well, the 1st gen skyx is the only one without solder TIM - makes it easier to de-lid , then go direct die, custom lapped IHS - whatever.
@dusk oracle thats kinda what I was thinking
So I wonder if that'll keep it's value to the extreme oc market
normally i would wait it out first before buying anything because you never know when a price drop would happen
(some value) they're already around $1k-1400 ebay
I have my hands full with hardware for the moment - but I want to ditch this x570 master/3700x, or just grab a 3900x used for daily / general use, x299 dark + mayyybe cheap used sky x gen ? , or just TR3 for the workstation
@sterile flicker waiting is usually better especially for something you want
I could pull the trigger now and get the i9-7980XE
then have a space i9-7940X
Could maybe make some money back off of it
or make it a goo backup/test bench CPU
Well zack you have parents to buy you those things as well
We didn't get to hear the rest of the VRM story
Not trying to be disrespectul - was just curious tbh. Maybe another time.
Oh i was only curious
pop corn was
MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS @$170
ASRock X570 PRO4 @$170
ASUS Prime X570-P @$170
GIGABYTE X570 GAMING X @$166
Which would be they best pick, they're all around the same price...
or ASUS AM4 TUF GAMING X570-Plus @$190
@zenith forge the x570 gaming x wins by a huge margin to all of those
the phantom 4 is also a good option if you want to save money
only a ~$20 difference so I'll probably go with the gaming x
ASRock
Why does the gaming x win by a huge margin?

@naive pendant it is a cheap board in a 5x2 plus 2 setup (granted it is at 300khz switching frequency)
I found it interesting how the different board manufacturers chose pretty different approaches for VRM design. Both on vcore and soc.
Like asus moving away from doublers alltogether, even stacking 3 powerstages per phase in parallel on some boards, while Asrock, MSI, and most of GB's line still uses some form of doubler implementation.
I remember reading a post on the ROG discord by Raja talking about that design choice a bit.
@naive pendant it is just all of them understand how to make a vrm and are making good vrm but asus who made a vrm purely to cheat poor testing methods that youtubers use
What kind of poor vrm testing?
I like the VRM transient response testing done by Elmor, TiN, BZ, Roman, for the most part
Elmor's z390 testing with an 1104X-E was what got me interested in it originally
only testing temps under a 0 airflow scenario (which isnt relevant as temp testing as temp it negates advantage from surface area and isnt relevant as a test period unless a given board in a real scenario with some cpu on that platform is hitting 120c or higher on mosfets)
... that's totally pg-13 but w/e
Without re-typing that - I was expressing my criticism for VRM reviews that not only over-emphasized load temps in worst case usage - but also improper measurement technique
+$5 for 3200mhz oloy warhawk (cas16) vs 3000mhz worth it?
e.g. you can't use an IR thermometer on a bare alluminum heat sink withoutemissivity calibration - even then, huge margin for error , can't tell what the IC temp is
again, for ryzen there isnt a real scenario even with a 3950x where the mosfets will near 120c unless you are doing ln2 overclocking with no airflow (not a real scenario)
When using Ryzen you always want the fastest possible memory
I want to try and push my old z270-H's vrm's to see how hot for how long they have to get to really cause a problem
My guess is somewhere that's not near realistic lol
@zenith forge what cl is the 3000mhz kit
if cl15 both are 10ns
my thought is that isnt much detail so not much can be given as input
thoughts for gaming
it is an alright build
will have an ssd too
for pure gaming get a 3600
then i guess it sounds fine
Streaming you can still get away with using the 3600
I stream with a 2600 and have no problems really
you could save a bunch just overclocking a 5700xt but if you dont want to oc i guess technically the 2070s is just over error margin by a percent or 2 faster
While I'd also ask for more input - can't really find much wrong with 3700x/2070s - sure, could drop cpu to 3600 and likely not see any hit to gaming performance, but when you're spending that much already - $130 more for 33% more cores and a non-garbage cooler isnice.
I wonder how cheaply I can get 3 more prisms on ebay...
if that extra couple percent is worth the extra money i guess is up to you
both are cas 16 @naive pendant
Really depends on the game - BF5 - ya, you'll want that
CSGO? lol nah
@zenith forge and how much is the 10ns olloy kit?
BF5, DCS, EFT, Squad
im pretty sure they have one for $66 last i checked
so if it is that one then get it
yeah it's the $66
I wish the 3600c16 ballistix elite 2x8/4x8 kits would drop to a sane price <$150 they are now
I got a 2x8 for 100 prime day, wish I stocked up
it kinda eats it
Rev E seems really easy on the IMC, my z390 setup hates the 3000c15 kit I have - but I'd bet 4x16 wouldn't be awful on zen2
For gaming - that'd be absurd yes lol, but everyone's got their use case
I need to find 16 x 4/8GB 1600 cl9 ddr3 myself, been looking on ebay
ey, pretty close to mine lol...i5 3570, 1050, 16gb ddr3
8 sticks would be fine- but nicer to get a complete set vs mix/match later on
getting a list together rn of what I'm gonna upgrade to once I have the monies
weβre both due for an upgrade
I have a 3570 haha
haha nice
if it was a K model and you had a board to overclock it i would overclock it and have it last a little bit longer
I have a overclockable mobo (asrock z68 pro3)
but the diff in price for a temp cpu wasn't worth imo
ya but you have a locked processor
yeah ik
I used a i5 2500 non K from 2011 till 2018 and it was a very good CPU but because it was a locked processor i couldn't do anything
3rd gen doesn't OC well ambient much anyway, at least not like 2nd gen
Originally i was thinking and this was during 2016 to just replace it for a 3770 but i didn't in the end
Lol same - I had my 2500k from jan 2011 to april 2017 as a daily. 4.0 easy , 4.5+ with little effort.
I just got a second one off ebay for $30
Well one thing i know if that the 3770 if i was to use that instead would last me for a good 4 years at most maybe 5 if i lower some settings
But ya, aside from 6th gen skylake - Intel locked OC pretty well on non-k.
I'd be interested to pick up a 6600 nonk or something to BCLK OC for fun - but too pricey for just a side project rn
Idk, did you look up reviews? It looks like a christmas ornament to me
Or like - a $30 intel stock cooler with a shroud and rgb haha. Regardless - for a 9400f, doesn't matter much
ya i know but it is what he wants and he does tend to be a little cheap so
Sounds good to me - "what he wants" will be the most important factor here
Because 9400f lol
He has been a console gamer all his life and well since he wants to play games with me he wants an actual PC that came game on which i was originally thinking for him the
R5 1600 but he wants Intel so
@tall abyss I would be too, nice choice in parts.
Thanks π
also for refference not only is the x570 tuf only a 4 plus 2 phase but it only runs at 400khz switching frequency
@dusk jay
its one of the best budget x570 boards
so in other words it is basically other than rated amperage on par with a bottom tier b350 board
@dusk jay do you not understand how a vrm works or what it does?
are you failing to read what i write?
How about a diagram to start - mspaint real quick how a basic VRM component layout functions in a typical motherboard cpu vcore supply
π΅
@naive pendant a VRM is a voltage regulator modual it regulates the voltage
and guess what that means... It means you want to have low ripple and fast transient response which once more a low end b350 can beat the tuf in
it simply is rated for a high amperage which matters 0% as even an ln2 3950x is only going to be around 175 to 200amps.
popcorn this is your final warning, stop talking down to people just because they know less than you
i shouldnt have to say this after youve already been warned
@elfin roost please quote where i talked down to someone?
Ok, plausible - but what b350 board? I don't recall many with such a robust VRM loadout as designed on the x570 TUF.
@dusk jay do you not understand how a vrm works or what it does?
are you failing to read what i write?
and guess what that means... It means you want to have low ripple and
@naive pendant most low end b350 boards will be in a 4 plus 2 setup with the same or a better switching frequency
I'd be interested to see the data from which you drew this conclusion
So from the AM4 motherboard master spreadsheet? Each motherboard's datasheets? Buildzoid's video? or more?
@elfin roost because he objectively doesnt seem to understand what i wrote as i gave a detailed explanation on the flaws in teh design and he responded with "google, what is the best x570"
there are better ways of saying it besides saying it the way you said it
im not arguing with you
talking down would be if in a hypothetical world i were to state "you dont know anything about a vrm idiot" which i wouldnt say and again is a hypothetical
just stop doing it
@naive pendant in this case buildzoid did a video on the x570 strix e which uses the same vrm
The strix E uses the same vrm as what board?
the asus x570 tuf
nm, wrong one
i meant f
@naive pendant I may not know the most about computers and only being 13 but using logic I can disprove you theory seeing how the board is recommended by several youtubers with 1M subs+
havin 1 million plus subscribers somehow changes the vrm config of the board?
Wait, so the x570 -F has the same VRM loadout as the TUF? (it does)
appeal to authority only applies if the authority you refference have an idea on the specs of the board and a propper understanding on vrm design and use which none of them do. this is why many simply check the probe temps on the board (which are not always placed in the same area) and test on 0 airflow testbenches which results in it not even being a valid test for temps as surface area no matter is accounted for, and also do not realize that a mosfet is not a cpu and wont throttle at around 90c
How does a MOSFET work?
@naive pendant yes, both use 3 sic639 power stages and are in a 4 plus 2 setup using the same controller and no doublers and presumably both are at a 400khz switching frequency
Does it operate at a constant 400 KHz?
i am comparing it to bottom tier b350 boards as that is what it is on par with
you should get a phantom 4 if you want a really good cheap mobo on x570
@naive pendant i would presume it stays around that range as that is what buildzoid labeled it as (for the strix f but it is possible the tuf is a lower switching frequency as it is a lower end board but i will assume they are both the same for now until given more reason to believe it to be lower)
Would would you say would be an ideal switching frequency for this type of VRM layout?
400khz would be fine if it was a $50 to 70 board
the issue is that the price rang eit is in has 8 and 10 phase boards with 300 to 500 khz switching frequencies
True 8 and 10 phase boards? Or doubleded or otherwise?
you can make a trash vrm and get recommended if it is in line for its price range but you cant make something terrible anc call it high end and put it in a price range wher everything destroys it
@quaint current proper doubling can be referred to as an 8 or 10 phase or as a 4x2 or 5x2 phase
this is more a debate on semantics than on the design of a board at this point
true 8's are still better 2x4 still
slightly in transient response but realistically not really by much
and transient response can also vary by specific designs to a degree so again not really
What is a proper doubling vs fake doubling? And how is that different than teaming?
proper doubling as in using a doubler instead of doing what many companies are doing now where they simply count the chokes and call those phases
@dusk jay that is a great choice. the aorus elite is a 6x2 plis 2 phase
ok sorry for being rude lol
Quick question - what's the SI unit for inductance? No googling π
are we still talking about pc's?
granted it is at 300khz switching frequency but i think the number of phases it has makes up for that pretty well.
It's relevant to PCs no worries
and what are you abbreviating if i may ask
im defenetly far from the techie role
me? or?
idk the awnser
@naive pendant yes
unless you meant a silicon inductor which is sort of off topic from what we were talking about
I don't want to drag this out further. But I was asking you what the SI unit for inductance was because you were talking about the importance of chokes in VRM design.
@naive pendant i was talking about how company marketing teams have tried counting chokes as phases
which is simply wrong to do
Do chokes work like inductors?
Or are they capacitors? Or both?
chokes are inductors
Right you are!
yay the trident z neo ram i want isnt compatible with the aourus mobo
What purpose do they serve in the context of the vrm design?
@dusk jay why isnt it?
it should still work
the same as any indutor which is to hold some sort of current
forgot to press enter
@naive pendant do you think it will work with that mobo?
When you put inductors in paralelll, what happens with respect to their electrical properties?
@dusk jay yes I dont see why not and @naive pendant I can get back to answering your questions at a latter time but for now I need to go help a friend out and will likely be back on later today
it says that there is only one 16gb kit from g.skill that will work with the mobo
that is 3600
can you link it?
If we're back to cpu/mobo/memory advice - need help?
there @quaint current https://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_x570-aorus-elite_matisse.pdf
the memory kit (like on newegg)
oh its model is the F4-3600C17Q-64GTZ
π€ it says its intel compatible i would of thought it would say ryzen
i am using intel ram
that's good ram
should it work your highness
thankyou java, I just wanted to open minecraft 1.14
@dusk jay the ram pcbs and dies among all companies is only from a small selection. all gskill is making is the heat spreader so yes it and all ram sticks of the correct ddr version will be compatible.
its probably just ryzen optimized ram
@quaint current ram is just the pcb and die and it could be argued bdies are nice for ryzen because they reach low latencies for example but it isnt really ryzen optimized as it will do the same for intel and reach lower latencies as it isnt held back by the imc
yeah
but some brands brand it as "ryzen optimized" to sell more
@naive pendant how much would a loop for 3950x+x570 aqua+ sli kingpin 2080 ti's cost cause i have no clue
to start, dont use a monoblock or a board that forces you to use one
any am4 block will work for 3950x
i recommend xspc or bykski
this is just for a overkill idea
and just get a refference 2080ti if you are putting it under a block
and again bykski
it'd be 2 360's in the o11 dynamic
fittings thermaltake is good at too
for the pump and reservior i recommend an enermax neo changer as the alluminum top doesnt actually touch liquid and it has a d5 pump that goes up to 5000 rpm and is pretty cheap
only complaint i have is that it is a pain in the ass to clean
overall you can probably get it done around $300 to 400
ic
Serious question - this seems like a good deal, looking for budget 16x 4-8GB ddr3 preferably not ECC /registered, thoughts? https://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-OF-20-80-GB-HYNIX-4GB-2RX4-PC3-10600-DDR3-HP-PN-500203-061-MEMORY-T12-C18/153671810000?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160727114228%26meid%3Daf4f372205ee44968e45be18e9cc9b8d%26pid%3D100290%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D153671810000%26itm%3D153671810000%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2060778&_trksid=p2060778.c100290.m3507
i have no clue on ddr3, so ill let somebody with more knowledge answer that
Ya - me neither lol
I last benched timespy with 1 stick because I couldn't find the other
@naive pendant That is a very good deal on ram if you don't care about it being 1333mhz...a good deal on 16gb of ddr3 is about $30. And that is about $18 per 16gb if I did my math right (idk I'm tired)
Ideally I want 1600cl9 due to platform limitations, but that's expensive unless yo ufind it on sale - and I can live with this for now. Quad channel makes up for the deficit in bandwidth per channel.
if you find 2 8gb sticks of ddr3 for cheap let me know. I need a ram upgrade to tide me over
I ended up having to buy my 1600 cl8/9, aleady forgot - 2GB dimms a few at atime for robbery prices - buying this lot would be largely for fun / testing
Ya - nvm, need like ddr 666 for that.
out of all the 200 dollar motherboards which one is best? strix?
will be using 9700k and overclocking
strix is always god tier tbh
@potent kernel So, server?
my CPU was getting 1.5v max for whatever it's max clock/PBO was on a 3900x, that seems kinda high
ok
even my 3700x does it
google said 1.45-1.48ish, i didn't know if that was a hard "do not exceed" limit or something
have you installed the latest chipset, there was an update
i installed an update from september when i got the motherboard last week
BIOS update i mean, i'll check the chipset
yeah there is a chipset update π which fixed idle
i'm getting pretty toasty idle temps sometimes in the 60*c even though my room is pretty chilly right now, but that's likely just poor thermal paste on the stock cooler
(not so) shiny new dh15s chromax should fix that
Yo any fellow insomniacs know much about ASRock mobo's?
Corsair created DDR4 memory that is 5,000 MHz strong
first of its kind
can someone help me
i have a pc ive dont everything right but i think i have a defective part cuz it wont post any tips?
Does MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max supports Mystic Light Sync?
no idea check the MSI page
Hey anyone here?
yello
So I heard about the Ryzen 5 3600X
I meant
3500X
And was wondering when it would come out?
i dont think amd has said anything about that concerning the date of release
And was wondering if it would be better than the 3600 for streaming games like Fortnite, Minecraft, Destiny 2
Oh
you can compare them
Where?
if they released any info about it, you can use that and compare if you want to
Oh okay thanks!
Ok thanks! π
anytime
@hasty marsh you know the 3500X is a china exclusive right
so i need help cloning my boot SSD and copying it onto a new SSD to replace it
@stuck basin use Macrium Reflect it is simple and easy to use
Clean install > clone most of the time.
Here's some help
https://github.com/Disassembler0/Win10-Initial-Setup-Script
https://nliteos.com/
I use Macrium Reflect a few times before and for my laptop and was able to clone everything perfect
One thing i would do anyways is clone first then format after to avoid any problems
ecks i didnt know cause i dont follow certain news about technology
Well i watch certain YT channels
What's a good and affordable x570 motherboard
What are your budget, intended use case, current hardware, and personal peferences?
I'd say x570 aourus master, crosshair VIII Hero are the crowd favorites.
@dusk oracle so i backed up the old SSD onto a file and then restored it onto the new one essentially copy and pasting it. So now I have this gigantic list of storage devices most of which i did not have before. the ones highlighted are drives i know are pluged into my PC. everything else is i guess what was partinioned off of the new SSD? Idk which one to use as the boot tho
When you start up your system you need to go into the bios and configure which drive to boot from
Okay, so you can just delete any partitions with data you don't care about, and extend the one you want
None of them are marked as boot partitions
i used to boot off of "Disk 0"
that is my old SSD
idk what this 100MB partition is for tho
@little jasper he split his drive as well to act as 2 separated drives
What did you use to copy the drive?
AOMEI Backupper
I didn't think windows even supported that
@stuck basin when you go in the bios and select which drive to boot from Disk 3 will become Disk 0
if you make a copy and do a restart without doing that step it will boot by default the drive you're using now
select the boot to your new drive
I dunno AOMEI, if it didn't copy the boot sector, it won't be bootable
And windows sure doesn't think it bootable, there is no boot flag like disk 0 shows in disk management
So what should I do
You guys good? I just ask since it's takes only a single click to wipe out hours of work - speaking for a friend π
Use a proper copy tool, one should be available for your ssd
He has the boot sectors cause the program i suggested i used it on my laptop and it works
I have also used it on my main system before as well
There's a lot of nuance to this
Samsung has one for sure, I usually just install from scratch when I get a new drive, makes sure I keep things clean, and usually doesn't take as long as I always expect it to lol
Well, if Ecks knows the software, I suppose he's the SME here
I never used it so I can't speak on it lol
While I 100% agree that you took the right course of action on your laptop, at first glance, I think those extra drives / EFI partitions may introduce unpredictable behavior.
But if you're confident, I won't interfere haha
@stuck basin you could try this out is taking out your old drive and plug the sata cable on the new drive
of course with your system turned off
and what would that do
Would read the new drive
oh i just noticed samsung has a data migration software
So I just used Samsung's SSD software to wipe the new drove and get rid off all the partitions that it made for some reason
Which disk is boot? Or boot target?
When you boot into the new drive 3 becomes 0
This is also why i have an enclosure for 2.5" drives so i can have the new SSD forced boot into windows and then use the old as an external to format it
and then booted into it through bios
i have one 2TB HDD for Games, one 2TB HDD for general stuff, a 480GB SSD that used to be my old boot drive, and a 1TB SSD now used as my primary SSD
so how to i remove the old SSD now
just power off, unplug, thats it?
power off the system and just disconnect the old drive and i would suggest the sata cable from the motherboard to plug it into your new one
kk
is your old SSD a 2.5" drive?
mhm
if i replace my mobo do i have to do a fresh install of everything,or can i just swap everything to the new board ?
A lot of that depends on the OS, and what version you have. Retail copies are easier to reactivate that oem or $5 license that was bought from some website.
So if you had a prebuilt like an HP or a Dell and try and move that to a computer that you built then it probably wont work.
no this is not a prebuilt i built the pc,just not happy with the asus motherboard
if its an oem license you bought online you can try the activation tool and see if it works. If not you can call them and sometimes they will let you do it.
Its really weird with oem license. Sometimes it works with no issues, sometimes its a hassle
sometimes they just wont let you do it
im not really worried about if i have to pay for activation,im worried do i need to wipe my drives and start fresh
No, windows 10 is pretty good about working as long as both systems were setup the same way. uefi to uefi or mbr to mbr
I have swapped my install between 3 different amd boards
ok sweet
there are guides online that show what you might need to do to prepare for a swap
What systems exactly? This is something I'd do (and have done) - but if this is your main work machine, and reliability is critical, I'd say fresh install, use the old drive as a data drive.
i have the newest asus maximus code, and its quirky, sometimes on reboot the mouse and keyboard wont work,or the bios just changes led light settings
z390 code? 9900k I assume? what was the previous system?
Do you know if it was insalled in UEFI/GPT mode or legacy/ MBR
Oh, nvm, I understand now. You're swapping from the M11C to something else?
yes
Do you know what you're swapping to?
msi godlike
Great board, leagues better hardware wise IMO.
im excited,it looks great,i like the asus board, looks good, but the bios is quirky, and like i said the mouse and keyboard wont work on reboot sometimes
I greatly prefer asus bios myself, never been on msi though.
msi bios is a lot like gigabyte, but with better memory stability
asus is easy to manuver, and use,but like it said it changes settings by itself, and the board does crazy stuff like the mouse and keyboard
,maybe its just defective i have no idea, but it will hit ebay soon
My immediate guess is that those are symptoms of bios settings related to low power/sleep/ s3 states, legacy usb support on boot, etc.
Not trying to talk you out of the godlike, but what bios was the code on?
Bios is largely preference IMO
I'm trying to find out if the motherboard and CPU that i just bought are compatible. I'm having a really hard time installing the CPU. This is my first build.
I've got a AORUS Z390 PRO WIFI MOBO and a AMD RYZEN 7 3700X CPU. Can anyone tell me if they're compatible? Or maybe where I can look to find out?
theyre not compatible
No, those are not compatible.
either you gotta swap out the motherboard or processor, either get an AMD motherboard or a Intel processor
I would return the mobo for an x570 aorus (elite, pro,), or Asus whatever
^
If you wanna go 9700k, that board is just fine. Preference
i have the z390 gigabyte gaming x which is a step down from what u have and i can get my 9600k to 5.1 ghz stable so its a great board
I'm already looking for a replacement. Thanks again for the help.
I'd say it's a great board for the 9600k, emphasis on 9600k
I apologize for my ignorance but is the i5 or i9 9600K better?
i9 9600k doesnt exist
but if youre talking about the i9 9900k, then yes, it is better than an i5
Gotcha. Sorry about the lack of knowledge. I'm looking now for a new CPU. Want to make sure I get the correct one this time.
Code? I think I mean the z390 code , the M11C
TL;DR there's a lot of settings in bios, each can cause or fix most probelms.
Hard to say without knowing the bios version
i will try the new board before i sell the old one
is a 1000 watt psu enough for my 2080ti,i9,and asus board,64gb ram
yep
What model psu
evga 1000 G3
Good PSU - you'll be fine. People hate on that G3 for stuff that might happen in one out of hundreds of units over a couple years.
mine works great
I'm a huge EVGA fan in general, I have the 850W G3, haven't manged to blow it up yet. I use it as a +12V bench psu
i love evga as well, but have an issue with the nu audio card, spdif port is crap
Intersting, why do you use the card?
i dont anymore
I mean, why not go external DAC for serious audio, or just use the code's oneboard
the port is cheaply made
I think the godlike has dual ALC1220's + dual headphone amp,
well it was an impulse buy
Been there lol
lol
It's $150 on sale rn
I might remember hearing someone mention that on the EVGA discord, forgot
yeah when you unplug the cable it falls apart
I'd shoot them an email, or just message from your evga account, excellent customer service IME
yeah the problem is i think every card would have this issue,if they are made the same, there is the main spdif block on the board, then the door and spring is held on by a small trim ring that has 3 tabs to hold it,the problem is the piece is so small there is no rigidity to the plastic so everytime you unplug the cable it falls apart
the trim ring falls off so the door and spring falls out,the bad thing is they have to be together to hold the cable in place
Why are you running spdif - optical? - from the sound card vs the mobo?
i have 2 sets of speakers, kanto yumi powered and non powered, the powered are bigger, decided to go with them
Valid use case
i thought maybe the quality might be batter from the card rather than the board, when the evga had the nhamic update it screwed everything up so i uninstalled the drivers and software
and am running off the card now
i like the card cause i had was able to hook my headphones up to it for my rift s
the sound was amazing
I bet - I used to use a dedicated sound card as well, it had a bonus feature of holding my m.2 drive in pace after I lost the screw.
lol,good benefit
i have so many audio options, astro a10s,beats im use with my rift s,my kanto speakers,so the card was nice
Would upgrading a ryzen 2400g to a 2600 be a good upgrade?
R5 2600 I'm guessing?
Yes sir
You'd see about a 20% increase in performance, but lose the apu
Yeah im getting an rx 590 for christmas
It's decent. If you want to OC, may want a good heatsink
@deft drum You should get a 1660
Also if you're upgrading from the 2400G you should go for the 3600
@leaden mirage change that number from 20 to 12
Oof
Really? Seems like a 20%.
I went from a 2400G to a 2600 i don't notice too much of an improvement which is why he should get the 2700X or 3600
Hrm. Guess was just me. I have a 2400g in my laptop and I noticed a diff in my 2600 for my PC. Maybe I'm just nitpicky
Right now I have a 2600x in there
what
If you plan on keeping all your pc parts stock then will a 430 dollar mobo really make a difference over a 240 dollar mobo?
no
depends on what exact parts
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/P7pM8M these are my parts I don't think it will make a big difference because I am using 65W CPU and as I said not overclocking
no price available for most things
there are other parts that could be improved upon other than the mobo
you could get away with an asus TUF wifi mobo
are you just gaming?
or video editing as well?
someone told me it was as bad as a low end b350 board
uh no it isn't at all
he said it only has a 4+2 power stage
it has a 4 phase tripled component VRM with decent surface area heatsinks
besides zen 2 is incredibly power efficient
it wouldn't matter
oh and just fyi, TDP means nothing
9900k has 95w TDP but usually runs way hotter than a 2700x with a 105w TDP
so could you answer my question, what is the main purpose of your build? @dusk jay
I wouldn't recommend that noctua cooler at that price
it's not competitive with other coolers around that price
also the RAM is kind of overpriced, there are cheaper samsung B die kits which are RGB
can you send me links to some better products?
I'll edit the list out for you, gimme a sec
k
do you really need RTX cards for specific RTX features?
I really like them and want the RTX 2070 Super because the 5700xt has driver issues also I LOVE Minecraft and raytracing for it would be a nice side feature (even tho I can get optifine lol)
and do you really need 32GB of RAM?
I want to upgrade to it later so why not do it now
just get 2x8 and then later get 2x8 if you need it
4x8 stresses the ryzen IMC
yea its hard on the CPU and it doesnt support quad channel
Hmmm
always go 2x16 whenever you can
over 4x8
unless your CPU supports quad channel
which ryzen CPUs dont
If you dont have 128g of ram what r u doing

I actually read it as gram the first time I saw your message, itβs a habit
Oof. Drug addict or wat
Ryzen is π
yes, just build your own CPU
I made mine out of preons
achieving inverse planck instant clock speed
My cpu is made of pin needles
@naive pendant Not a drug addict, g just usually stands for gram or gravity
g is reserved for my boyfriend
https://www.newegg.ca/p/N82E16813145160?Description=x570&cm_re=x570-_-13-145-160-_-Product i think I am gonna get this mobo
nvm meant this one lol https://www.newegg.ca/p/N82E16813145165
I just want to pull the trigger on that aorus xtreme but $700
yea thats too much but do you think that mobo is worth it
it's the only mobo other than the aqua (which is worse in terms of hardware specs) which is passively cooled for the chipset
Reason: Bad word usage
Ok buddy
you'd get banned for saying that if a mod saw it
I didnt realize that was a bad word but ok
what did he say?
uh it's related to anime I guess
also that gigabyte mobo has bios issues @river atlas
yes
it's likely some old article at the time of zen 2 release
when all mobos had BIOS issues
new BIOS versions should completely fix it
and it also has BIOS flashback
so you don't need anything other than power to update BIOS
USB flashback Pog
@dusk jay it might be one single isolated issue
Idk. I only fk with intel
but 3 people saying it is a lot
get the TUF wifi then
what do you think then @river atlas
Thatβs another board
I've personally never heard of any issues
and if it was widespread it would be on youtube
ok so the gigabyte one?
yeah, and you can RMA it if it's really problematic
yes i mean my system should work and if it doesnt ill get new mobo
cant wait til this drops https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MEG-X570-UNIFY
its supposed to be around 250 iirc
The specs look decent, but I would guess closer to $500
somewhere in the $400 to $500 range
actually nevermind, might be closer to $300
vrm is doubled and it doesnt have rgb
Still looks like a relatively solid board
the only price i could fine was on guru3d and it said 239usd
that'd be an amazing board if it was true
In Seoul, South Korea, Intel hosted their memory and storage day featuring their DC persistent memory, code named Barlow Pass, which is the second generation...
need help anyone here knows anything that i do to test a mobo without a cpu to make sure it works before i get the cpu only have 15 days of warranty and was wondering if i can test without cpu
You can't really test without a cpu
i need the suggetion where to buy the motherboard, supports upto 64 GB ddr4 Ram, Processor upto 8-10 core with HT. ddr 4 RAM 2133Mz. 1000wat SMPS, graphics card, i preferred old hardware.
need the suggetion where to buy the below OLd but good condtion hardware ?
motherboard supports upto 64 GB ddr4 Ram,
Processor upto 8-10 core with HT.
ddr 4 RAM 2133Mz.
1000wat SMPS,
2-4 graphics card,
what is the cost of 4tb sata 72000RPM ?
the best chance youre going to have is going to be looking for used
hardware
on websites like ebay
or facebook
thanks @elfin roost but i checked on facebook and ebay but difficult to find the exact required hardware
i mean when youre going for old hardware thats no longer produced you cant expect to be able to find the hardware readily available
your best bet is going with new hardware
if you want to find it readily available
hi @elfin roost can you help me to choose the right product in ebay..
i mean its really if the product matches your needs
im not up to date on old hardware
ok
You think a x99 rampage is real outdated? I cant do netflix 4k cause the cpu is before intel went and supported it or i would keep it
Running 980 sli as well
Is SLI a thing still. Say 2070 or 2080ti sli?
Iβve always done that
I was so exited last build cause mobo ddr4 chipset video card all came out same day I knew I had to upgrade
That timing rarely happens
I been looking with awe at the gaming tvβs as well
sli is dead unless you use it for productivity where it can use the vram and shared cores, for gaming its useless for the most part
gaming TVs are still much worse than monitors
especially in terms of input lag and response times
Some Intel Z370 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Coffee Lake Refresh CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions. <--- how important is that warning in pcpartpicker
what is your list?
can you send it here
it's not that important if your board has BIOS flashback
open ears π
the 9900k firstly
it's not needed
especially with the resolution you're playing at
seems like your budget is 5k?
I can make a 2080ti SLI build for that
Sli isn't much of a boost to his performance if they're just gaming though
unless he's doing other stuff
ye i know the budget a bit overboard but i have been saving for awhile
i will not be
do you stream
and no
you don't need both to be so expensive then
if you really want multi display get on really high spec monitor and another decent one
but is it not better to have same like kind for seamless transition or something?
what shall my 2ndary moniters be 4k? 1080p 240hz?
here
even with identical monitors its cheaper
lol
the rest of the money can be spent on RGB halos
to make the noctua fans RGB
That's a nice build list, 9900k + 2080 ti is great π
phanteks RGB fan halos
im liking your build better but i probt wont need two gpus
Open to input?
is there much difference from 3200mhz to 3600mhz for ram?
theres more to it than just speed
oh, please explain
there's timings to consider (primary, secondary, tertiary, hundreds of them literally), memory rank, amount of memory channels, specific board by board BIOS optimization, CPU IMC power, memory vendor revision etc
it's not just 'oh buy 3200 over 3000 because it's faster'
or something like that
what CPU do you have?
as long as you aren't running quad channel on zen/zen+, both should be able to run
hello, i have a few questions
Soooo my PC keeps getting bsod'd
It happened twice last night
Twice in the last 2 hrs
Not sure what is causing it or how to fix it
when it happens if shows you what the error might be or an error code which you can google what is the cause of it
Hey all, just finally getting my setup together and am running into some issues. My pc boots up but wonβt register to the monitor. My ram, aio cpu cooler, gpu, and psu seem to all be working fine however nothing else that I connect to the motherboard such as my keyboard, mouse, and mousepad are even responding with their rgb. Is my motherboard DOA?
is it just the RGB that isn't working? do the keyboard and other things respond to other input, you typing or using the mouse? cuz you will need to install a piece of software (or more than one if the RGB parts are all from different manufacturers) to get the RGB to work
or at least to control it fully
I need to order 16GB ram for my Gigabyte Z370M DS3H motherboard. What memory should I buy at the least cost?
most 16gb of ram nowadays are below 70
Looking for a motherboard for a new build. Ryzen 3700x with 32gb of ram. Not into RGB and probably wont OC.
Why not get the 3800X instead
@weak hamlet did you look at the reviews on that board you suggested?
lot of reviews on there for the system not posting with that board
@dusk oracle I'll check out 3800x too. Is it that much better than 3700x?
It would have a higher standard clock and if you don't plan on overclocking it would be better then
@solemn raven are you doing more than just gaming i would assume?
@dusk oracle mostly as a workstation for video/photo editing. Some gaming in there.
Ok so the 3700X/3800X would be perfect for that
@dusk oracle Cool. Just need to find a good mobo. Way too many choices and I dont need it to have lights.
@solemn raven i would suggest this https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813157885
I have that same exact board, it post fine.
Well you got lucky then since there is so many reviews of it not posting
Thanks @dusk oracle !
np
I thought you had a gaming x , not a steel legend
who?
Box
ok
any one use uphere fans having issues with connecting aura sync to them
3800X is useless
not recommended
it offers very little to no advantage over a 3700x
for more money
Pretty much -though, they did drop the price, and if someone wants to pay $30 or w/e more for a slightly better bin - I'm certainly not complaining
π
Being October 26th would it be reasonable to assume the MSI B450 Tomahawk ships ready for ryzen gen 3? Iβm wanting to use the 3600 in my next build but finding a mobo for the right price just hasnβt been that easy for me
The tomahawk max does, with the regular tomahawk you need an older gen cpu to flash the bios, I was looking at the exact same one and I'm trying to get my hands on the max so I don't have to deal with the bios
Hey, I'm looking for a new mobo to get, and the CPU i found has deals that include a mobo, but I'm not sure which is better there are three mobos, and I'm not really sure which is better.
is it ok if i post an amazon link?
You could just post the model names if your worried about links
ok, one sec
they all have the amd ryzen 7 3700x
- msi mpg x570 gaming pro carbon wifi
- asus rog strix x570-e gaming
- x570 aorus pro wifi
i would try to do this myself, but i don't know enough yet to make a decent look at those
Out of those the ASUS board is the best being a price category or two above both of the others. So if it's the same price for all 3 get the ASUS one.
ok, thank you
No problem
is 60c idle and 80c load bad?
80c load is pretty hot, 60c idle is like twice what it should be
@quaint current if using the Wraith Stealth he is 20c over for idle and his max temp should be on load in the 60's
But also those temps are telling me overclocked
Whenever I turn my pc on it goes to the bios and I have to click boot windows how do I fix this
@harsh plank you don't need an older CPU to flash the BIOS on the regular tomahawk
it has BIOS flashback, so you only need power from the PSU to flash BIOS
I still wouldn't recommend it for ryzen 3rd gen as it has BIOS compatibility issues
tomahawk max on the other hand doesn't
due to the larger BIOS chip mainly
@river atlas ah gotcha, I just know the max is better for 3rd gen since it works right out of the box, thank you for correcting me
Also, just so everyone knows, lets say you have a third gen capable board but can't flash the bios, if you contact AMD they will lend you a low level cpu (I think a 2200G) for you to flash a bios then mail back to them.
its the cheapest cpu that is guaranteed to work with all the ryzen 3xxxx bios
yea
B450 is not friendly to the 3700x
the b450 tomahawk is like the best budget board for 3600(x)
but the tomahawk max is only a few bucks more and works with zen2 out of the box
@shy wyvern It is a 200GE
Anyone Know where I can find 16 or 32gb of 2400mhz DDR3 RAM for under 50 bucks? Newegg wants 130 for 16gb of 2400mhz DDR3 and for 32gb of 2400mhz DDR3 200. Just wondering if I will need to save up or if someone has that kind of RAM laying around collecting dust,
are you specifically looking for ddr3?
2400 is pretty fast for ddr3 - what's your use case?
Look around on used sites
DDR3 is sadly rare now so prices can be unreasonable
Its out of the cheap phase when DDR4 just came out
is the x570 worth it for a ryzen 3600? Or would it be better off with an x470 or b450 ?
X570 is worth it but you can wait for the B550
I'm trying to help a friend pick out parts for his first build
I just convinced him that the 3700x isn't really worth it over the 3600, considering that he'll only be gaming on it
he currently has an x570 board picked out, but I'm wondering if he should step down on that as well
he'll be ordering his parts at the end of the week
Oh nvm i was gonna say wait for b550
is there a guesstimate on when the b550 boards should be coming out?
Wont happen until after the 3950x launches which is supposed to be Nov 30. So I wouldn't bet on it being available 100% this year
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1C_DCln4Vg459OC-7jzmCH_DTcUedhAGl x570 master f7F bios 1.0.0.4 beta bios
if it has BIOS flashback beta BIOS isnt a problem
@tulip flint get the b450 max boards from MSI
I wouldn't be too confident haha. The earlier beta bios, N18 - was pretty sketch, thankfully more boards come with 2 or more bios's, and at least one using a non soldered chip.
yeah that was my suggestion to him
hello im trying to build a new pc and it has been about 8 years since I have had to upgrade my motherboard, when I built my pc 8 years ago they had motherboards with built in graphics cards now it says that its a cpu intergrated gpu and I was wondering how that worked? because I am a little shy on money right now and im trying to build a pc that will run modern day wow on at least medium quality until I can afford to buy a new gpu
how much money do you have? @topaz bone
will any microcode update will be applied through the bios?
rather, through a bios update
@tulip flint msi gaming plus b450 max working wonderfully with my ryzen5 3600 ^^
@silent brook did it work right out of the box?
@harsh plank yeahp make sure its the MAX that youre buying
is that before or after the destiny fix?
