Nah, the glitch came from me. It happens when someone is dropping stuff while a bunch of other people are attempting to pick it up. Sometimes the game fails to unlock the item for picking up. Entering a loading zone (such as entering a room, or someone leaves/joins) makes the game correct the glitch.
It was a massive issue in New Leaf and City Folk, and it's unfortunate that it happens as well in this one.
