Generally, the best thing to do when you don't know how to decorate your home is to ask yourself what purpose your house has or what it represents. Is it just the house of your character? Then you can try to make a bathroom, a kitchen, a bedroom... Everything you need in a regular home.

Oh, I am not customizing villager homes. I made a second and third account to open up a couple more player made houses on my same island. I have my main account that I can make almost anything and trade for what I don’t have with, and then drop that stuff on the beach, log out and back in as my second character, pick the stuff up I need to decorate with.
