The little entrance area for my punk rock pirate themed island... it's not great. Any ideas to improve it? want to keep the natural elevation of my island in tact so I don't wanna put in weird little cliffs... but this space seems both small and empty at the same time.

might continue the brick path left until my river, using it as both my entrance and the beginning of a boardwalk pirate market. maybe use more trees behind the seating area with the notice board for height and concealing the able sisters, and then softly transition into little farming patches in between the boardwalk and the main road where the able sisters and nooks cranny are...

not really, but it's best if you cut out an area and then focus on it first! divide and conquer kinda thing. i didnt flatten my island because some of the tiers are actually how i wanted them, so that cut out some of the work for me!

Looks like you've got cliffs (or trees) south of the two spots. These block the rocks from spawning. You can remove the cliffs/trees temporarily until the rocks spawn then put them back!

Does anyone have advice for terraforming? I flattened my island and I'm trying to get ideas but it's been hard. I have my theme figured out, it's just a matter of putting buildings in good locations and terraforming in a way that looks natural.

I find terraforming hard to do, so I just got levels on my island, nothing spectacular

In a nutshell from a few youtube tutorials I have seen: Round the corners, make bigger area then you think you need, dont do asymmetrical, dont think too hard on it, 1-2 wide on waterfalls split apart rather then one super wide one.

But there are so many ways you can go about it and no hard rules, just some nice things to try.

You can get inspiration from other people but I just recommend doing your own thing until you naturally get better at it, although you’ll be redesigning a lot

Hmm…I’ve watched some videos on that. The tips that I follow are 1.) place taller/bigger items towards the back of a build & 2.) place items diagonally instead of one in front of the other. Look at picnic areas and those will make more sense. Those tips can work for any kind of area though. @dusk ore

I’d recommend citycore, it’s pretty easy in my opinion and if you wanted to do more than one theme it’s really great for that as it goes with almost any other theme

It also gives you a chance to make some really cool neighborhoods and stuff

I also just think it looks nice

I think the advice I’d give you is forget about symmetry, sometimes it’s easier to stop trying to line up everything (ex: making the airport path line up perfectly with the town square’s center) AND work smaller with more clutter instead of vast areas

Since my town Center was so close and off Center I did this and instead of looking awkward I think it looks intentional

I always start from the outer ends and work my way to the center when designing my island

First things I would look at is the rocks and river mouths as well as how you can connect your airport to your town Center

For example knew I wanted a diner on a rock so I decided to put a boardwalk there, and then it made sense to have my shops near that, and it kinda just picked up from there

What I did with my island is kinda weird tbh. I started at the residential center and then started building outward and as I did so I became a better builder so now I’m redoing most of the bad stuff so now I’m building inward most of the time

Build a median in the middle of the lanes of the road. This would probably require widening the road, but you could incorporate flowers and other small items in the median area.

Since your airport and residential are nearly centered you could do a town or city type of layout in the bottom half of your island. On the right you could do the museum and the shops as like a downtown area. On the left you could lay out the houses in a suburban/neighborhood type of thing. That would leave you plenty of room at the top of the island to still do all sort of other unique and fancy builds to have fun with! And in E1, you could make the River curve into that grassy area that goes out to the ocean to isolate that corner, have a bridge going across it to lead to the mainland, and put your campsite there, and decorate it up like an actual cute little campsite in the woods. Those are just a few ideas.
Another way I’ve done my island before and it turned out pretty cool and interesting is just to place buildings randomly and terraform/decorate around them! It can sometimes be challenging but it is sure to turn out unique.

Do you have an idea what theme you want? If not that’s where you’re going to want to start, terraforming for cottage core/rainforest/citycore/etc are all very different

Going in remember that you don't have to do it all at once, and picking out what themes and features you like will help you know what kinds of map you can have. For example if you want a villager neighborhood it will take some space on your map, if you want a rock garden that's a set amount of space and you'll want to make sure it's somewhere that won't need to move even if you change up the rest again, bc it's so high energy to make, etc

Also remember you can use the beach to store flowers and they won't duplicate while on the beach!

Plan your clutter carefully. If you're making pathways, make sure you lay them down and have them sorted and convenient to walk through first before laying down the other items and furniture, and check the experience walking through it when you add more to make sure it doesn't become too laggy or hard to walk through. If it's too laggy but you don't feel it's cluttered enough try bringing the pathway one tile smaller instead of adding more items, or even use different custom path designs in some places to create a cluttered feel without literal clutter in items

I'm not using road pathing exactly, but for me personally I've ended some with a separate path leading to the beach and others I've ended by curving them off near the beach edge. Like so:

hey guys! im about to redo my island, going for studio ghibli/magical cottagecore vibes, thinking of that one scene from howls moving castle with that super huge flower field as my inspo!

I've always gotten v frustrated and quit when redesigning my island, specifically with my villager homes. so my question to you guys is:

in your opinion, do you prefer villager "neighborhoods" or scattered houses? which do you feel would lend better to my theme?

I tend to like more of a scattered home layout since I find neighborhoods to get a little boring. I tend to group like 2 together often. For a more forested theme like what you describes, I would say definitely scattered so it feels less civilized

So before 2.0 I had a section of my island dedicated to having one of each color of each flower, the complete flower collection, but now farming is a thing and I don't have room for both of these things. Has anyone else faced this island design challenge? and if so, what did you end up doing? I'm thinking of just decentralizing my flower and hybrids collection and just scattering around the island in an organic looking sort of way and just making sure there's still at least one of everything somewhere on the island, and using the garden-themed space previously dedicated to the flowers as my farming area

If it weren't winter I would suggest some potted plants. Maybe a Festive Tree? (not the Big one, or the Tabletop one) If your island isn't permanently snowy by design you can swap that out for some potted plants in other seasons. There's a customization of the Evergreen Ash that would look really cool in her paved yard. Or maybe a Plain party-lights arch?

I have the same music player as she has in her house behind the table to fill that little corner (it can't be seen from this angle though) I thought about extending her yard into the beach and making a spa like area with a poolbed a jacuzzi tub? I also have the arch at my entrance. It leads to a small paved square with a tree at each corner, bench on each side, and fountain in the middle. I added some streelamps and spooky fencing to either side of the arch and it turned out really well! Can get on to take a pic shortly if you want

well my recommendation would be to think of a theme. if u dont know what theme to do think about the items u have and which ones u really wanna use. or ur fav villager and where u want them to live

Where is your plaza? You could try shuffling the whole setup forward and either left or right for more space and have a diagonal path from the airport to the entrance?

I think it's cramped bc of the bordering cliffs but if you remove the sideways ones I think it would feel open enough!

I’d move the path right to make the path align w resident services and move the fences, then at the airport u can leave it aligned too and build smth or plant trees that covers up where the path shifts two tiles

it really depends on what you want to achieve. mountains can be good for both backdrops and viewpoints, so i would put them in places where i can achieve both.

u can also use cliffs to make fake buildings
