hello, pretty much the same standard advice to get your island to 5 stars as well:

Plant more flowers, get rid of weeds, put more furniture around

build more fences, build facilities

and build a couple of bridges

@hot mirage I suggest recruiting a villager and decorating around their house; this way you put fences, furniture, and you get a villager. Throw in flowers and a tree, and by the time you get 10 villagers, you should easily get 3 stars or more

Most plucked flowers look like weeds, though they stay only one day so it's great if you want to upload your dream address at that moment for example lol
Other than that, use a lot of weeds, bushes, trees of various growth stages (by stunting them), including palm trees, and also you can put a few potted house plants

Focus on placing paths for now ideally @reef flicker, going from the airport first and then leading to the plaza. Branch off at all four points of the plaza even if you find that will help. Also connect paths to the shops and buildings. You can decorate in the spaces between then and you will find it easier

That doesn't even look ugly. The shop placement is good, the houses are scattered (which always looks cool), the teraforming is decent from what I can tell, the layout itself is REALLY good.

it's important to have items that overlap in front of other items or are placed on the border between two different ground tiles

for example in real life you wouldn't have a confetti launcher and then a single patch of roses? flowers are either in neat rows or they spread wildly

if something looks plain then it's good to add items and a mild sense of like, disorganization

What theme are you going for?

This time I didn't think about my map when I was decorating, I tried to focus on the landscape that worked for the area rather then what looked on the map which I found a lot less stressful

I have 3 themed areas: a forest/natural area, a suburb area and an asian/zen area
And yeah I also do the terraforming first and then check what the map becomes after, but I have few level changes, no sprawling waterways and few normal paths (I use custom design ones), so my map stays quite boring.. lol
And because I tried to align the 2 different-sized shops on my shopping plaza, they are not aligned on the map, so that's already off to a bad start lol

The overall theme of my island is natural/cottagecore but each villager has there own little area so of which don't quite line up with the overall theme. (For example Dizzy's playground is more kidcore then cottagecore)

So I have south rivers but I find myself wishing I had one on the left of the map. I think it will be personal preference for your design idea. I like the private beach to one side. My town hall is aligned with the airport (restarted a lot to get that when I first got the game) since you can do a lot with it. My airport is in the middle of the map like my town hall. There is some space between the two. Some map layouts have the town hall too close which makes it hard to decorate around it

• i have no preference tbh! a lot of people like one south river and a west/east river mouth. i have an east river mouth but i think if i were to reset i'd like to try double south rivers for a change
• i never planned my map beforehand, so i never thought about my secret beach placement. now that i've finished a good portion of my map, i think i'd like my secret beach to be a bit closer to the side
• i like having a good amount of space but i don't like it too far! i feel having too much space is kinda like .. overwhelming imo. i'm not sure what i'd do w so much space,,
• i prefer my airport to the middle
• i think this depends on what you want! my current map has my rs and airport aligned w my airport but if i were to do a more natural theme i think i would want it to be not aligned

Try using a lot of simple panels and silos to create the impression of castles! I'm doing a viking/medieval island, but I don't have castles. I try to use a lot of panels though, to create the idea of a village

To be honest, I don't really mind the island's layout. I think people can work around the obstacles with terraforming and creative solutions. Therefore, I never really paid attention to where my resident services were or my airport alignment... Let alone where my river is lol
