Just because everyone else uses a particular theme doesn't mean that you must use it too, if you don't really like it.
What sometimes can help is to make up some kind of lore or story about your character and go from there.
(For example: I decided to have my character be a pharmacist/gardener, therefore I went to make a garden area that fit the medicine theme)

A way to make paths that I really like, and that is perfect for others like me who don't use custom paths that much:
Firstly, you make the normal path, then put bushes (or fences!) on both sides of it, and then put another kind of path behind it on which you can put flowers. I really like how it looks, both on the island and on the map, and also, with these paths it is really easy to put limits and barriers up for visitors so that they can't go anywhere they are not supposed to. Dunno if anyone needs it, just wanted to share, maybe others can improve that idea or something ^^

you have to reach 3 stars on your island. when you finish doing that, K.K Slider will host a concert on your island, and then the next day Tom Nook will give you the Island Designer app! Keep in mind that you won't have access to all of the features of the app until you buy them with nook miles from the nook stop! I'm pretty sure it's 6000 miles for both abilities! hope this helps x3

i think its required to unlock both the nook's cranny and able sisters, as well as the new resident services building! oh, and you also need a campsite, and im pretty sure the required amount of villagers you need on your island is 8. when you have all that done, you can ask isabelle for the latest island evals, and she'll tell you what you need to do to get 3 stars, for example, putting furniture on your island and growing flowers and shrubs! hope this helps! x3 you can always search it on yt!

I think it's cute. If you want it to be a little more natural, don't be afraid to put something like furniture on the path too. Could be pirate stuff, mushrooms, stumps, whatever. It will make it look less "clean"

Don't say something like that, every island is gorgeous! But, it you want a tip: Just use every item that literally makes your heart go :)
You don't have to have a plan from the start, just start doing something! It doesn't have to look amazing right away, just keep at it and your island will be your personal happy place in no time.

Exactly, Animal Crossing is a relaxing game! You aren't meant to have a perfect island after only 70 hours, your island will naturally grow more and more with you as you progress, as you get more items, more designs and more ideas!

@vague jasper that's the thing. You haven't been playing for very long and even the people who have played for hours don't have their perfect looking island. It takes a long time. I've redone my island 3 times because I wasn't happy with it and I'm on 400 hours. Nowhere near finished. The beautiful finished products that you see have come from hours of work and multiple times of redoing and rearranging so don't beat yourself up about it if it's not exactly how you like it straight away. We all go through it haha

I have definitely thought about that! Separating it into two parts with two different, yet still similar themes by a river sounds nice, but it's harder than it seems. The idea of having each side centered around a villager seems cool though.

There isn't a wrong way to pick an island just determine what permanent things you want were. Example, Do you want the Resident Services aligned. Do you care where the dock is or the private beach or rocks? Stuff like that. Don't be afraid to try picking an island again if you don't like what you picked. And River mouths like Olive said

Well you can check out the furniture-trade section to get what you need. If you have certain things in mind you can always recreate them. For cottagecore, it's good to pick out what elements make it up. Does it always use certain paths, furntiure pieces, water, etc. Based on what I've seen there are a lot of elevation changes throughout with flowers and more natural looking furniture. Does that help?

Something I've always thought about because I don't want to constantly switch out shrubs, plan for specific ones in specific areas. So year-round you'll have some shrubs without blossoms, but you'll always have shrubs in blossom

I've got a resident services that about 20 spaces but if you want to give the illusion of having more distance you can block off the closest part of resident services with a cliff and make a longer path around to get to it

Dunno if this helps but my resident services is only one or two spaces to the right side of my airport but you can't even see it until you go all the way up the path because of the cliffs
