I personally am not a fan of keeping them as dense as possible. It starts to feel like they're marginalized, an inconvenience. Give them at least enough room to each have some personality to their groundskeeping. But beyond that, it's really up to you if you want a dense neighborhood or some more rural, spacious dwellings. Each building is an opportunity to create a new vignette.

It also depends how the rest of your island is set up. I have fairly large chunks used with other thinks like a fairly big zen garden/rock garden circle or a market street. Let alone these two "features" take up nearly a third of my island. If you have few big areas, clumping the houses might be your best/only option, otherwise you might run out of room.

If you're going for a cottoncore/fairycore kinda style with lots of smaller areas, then spread out would be better. Also depends if you rather want a more natural/rural or a more urban look ^^

Hello. So this past week I've been insainly busy. This is the 4th or 5th time ive redone my island since i started in june. Took down all halloween decorations. Redid layout all except my villagers houses. Those r neatly on my 3rd level. My pride n joys are my carnival and my pool ^_^ im so happy with the layout. @high drift If you’re not sure where to begin, my biggest piece of advice (at least what works for me) is to NOT FLATTEN YOUR ISLAND. Instead, try terraforming to bring out one of the existing cliffs or learn to work with your rivers and not against them. If you want it to seem natural, that’s what I would do. The natural cliffs and rivers can help to inspire your creativity.

If you flatten your island, you’ll probably end up feeling even more stuck.

Like my island’s basic structure is the same except I blocked off a river or two when I had a plan. The main cliffs are in the same place.

I still have one main river that cuts up the island like I did when I started. The top and right cliffs were always there. Of course I terraformed to shape things how I wanted to.

So the first thing you should do is literally just start. The ideas will come to you.

I would totally add some more rough edges to the cliff so it’s not as flat. Gives it a more realistic effect/ more earthy and natural. And then maybe add a staircase up that cliff and add a cool little garden shop area as an extension to the nook store

Joey, I like drawing out some shapes on a piece of paper in a square to see what I like. A natural island doesn't need a lot of small elevation. The shapes you like will help you decide the general island elevation then you can fine tune it as you decorate

I'm planning on keeping most of my island on the first level, and use cliffs to block line of sight and create scenes. I also plan on having rivers cut through cliff mountains as well

Second cliff is mostly used for auxiliary stuff. And third cliff is scenic only with fourth being used sparingly

Definitely do research and in time you will know what you like and how to do it. It will be easier the longer you play. Nintendo is secretly teaching us all patience.

Additionally no one can actually terraform your island for you. So you still have to do the most tedious parts. And you can always post photos here for people to give their ideas and opinions.

My Island is a mess rn but I like this. The shrubs are arranged clockwise according to seasonality. It's inspired by clock signals used for keeping track of time in various devices, which use crystals to create the signal (hence quartz clocks). Thanks to the piezoelectric effect, hitting certain crystals creates a voltage. We hit rocks in this game. Rocks = crystal. Ok I'm done writing a dissertation on my rock garden

That style are you going for? Urban have more man made straight lines. Rural/land scapes have jagged lines, curves etc. Thats an important first step
