@novel pebble I just flattened so i could change my design process. what i started doing was drawing my ideas and taking notes on my inspo pics. i started thinking about different areas i wanted and the walkway to get to each one and which ones would go nicely together 🙂 example: i want a glampsite, flower field, and waterfall lookout, so i just kinda puzzled that together in my sketchbook before i started building it 🙂

@novel pebble always start from the entrance and build in small sections from there 😊 remember to take breaks too - I get my creative juices flowing maybe once every few days so I'll start on something and not finish it until a week later bc I suddenly got a good idea. So don't worry about planning out everything right now ~ also, you can start by deciding if you want a neighborhood or scatter your villagers into different decorated areas, as their houses will take up a chunk of your island. Here's a helpful guide to get you started for house placements!

honeslty don't be afraid to tear things down and move them! it's a lot of work, but designing your island can be a fluid process and you don't have to be tied down to something you already tried and didn't like 🙂

Sucks that that happened. But oh well. Happy Island Designer is neat to get an idea where to put important structures. But its not the best to actually design complexer detailed areas. It can't show waterfalls or half tile items.
In my optinion its better to just start designing a certaim area of you're map, moving trees and furniturr around, figuring out a "flow" of your island. And like otgers said, don't be afraid to redo areas if you're not happy with them. If redid an area on my island a bunch of times too, sometimes it just takes a few tries. But it's super rewarding once you finally figured out a certain area and are happy with it ^^

@warped charm yeah there are tree cutouts, mountain, grass and bushes I think. If put them on a cliff and maybe add some weeds in front of them or flowers to help cover up that they are just cutouts. They have some pretty cute customizations

@quartz cliff For making things look overgrown, add weeds and breakages in the path to make it looked disused, add lots of weeds and flowers and make it generally winding/not straight, so sometimes the best way to divide the secion would be through plant life or log stakes instead of fences

They both have their benefits. Custom paths allow for more creativity and individual themes/designs. But people also like nornal paths since they have a sound when walking across. Custom paths dont make a sound

@rapid trellis I love the little pastel carnival you made!! My island has a very similar theme, so maybe these pics will help inspire you. :)) I find keeping a similar color scheme and reusing some paths in multiple areas helps to make the whole island look cohesive without being exactly the same💕✨

@vapid hemlock my Island isn't exactly avatar inspired but it's earth energy inspired. I would plant a lot of trees, especially bamboo and would use a lot of bamboo furniture. Maybe create a little tea shop? A stall with cabbages?

@vapid hemlock I incorporated the zodiac furniture that belongs to the earth signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Make the area really overgrown and maybe have a rock garden? You can also place the various rock DIYs

@vapid hemlock inspiration can come from everywhere. What helps me is to narrow down what items and furniture I want to use and then to play around with it. I move stuff 100 times before I am satisfied.

@icy flint yeah I always make sure that the new path has the same composition as the old one and try not to make mistakes when saving it. It really does save a ton of time. But accidentally erasing it is definitely an issue. But I would rather replace a few tiles every now and then.
I also like to change my paths as the seasons change. Different colours look better with different grass

@woven drift I had a large empty space and turned it into a soccer field. If you want in yours you could do a cemetery, it may fit your gothic theme. I went for a more organic layout. but yours is certainly functional.

@woven drift No Prob. from experience (i hijacked my daughters...but then bought my own switch...) i knew i wanted my stores nearish the airport and i wanted an island within an island for my house (i'm no good at moats) ha. however- from my layout i did also learn that terraforming the backside of your island and using those rock outcroppings is fun too. I have a lighthouse and the statue of liberty on the backside of my island as well as benches a campfire it's so fun.

i’m not rly sure about the two ramps for redd’s beach, but i think its good! if you’re going for a more natural island i think id make the cliff in the upper part of your map ig more shaped? rather than just a block. i think itd add more dimension if its multiple smaller cliffs rather than one big cliff too

@timber breach I've never totally redone my island but it's constantly evolving as I redo parts or destroy others to make room for my new ideas. I guess I'd just say--I at least never worry if parts of my island look obviously unfinished/messy/cluttered. Sometimes I go for a whole effort of cleaning it up to make a dream save or something, but then the mess starts again as I renovate.

@timber breach i suggest, if u used design codes, to find ones that could easily replace them without you having to erase and put them down again with the new theme you want. for example wooden train tracks to colorful ones

@timber breach if the villager house is at the section I'm working at, then I move those (for instance if I'm working on the lower right corner and I have 3 houses there, I only move those three) and after I finish with the section I go to the next and move the others, etc. It took me 3 weeks to get 90% of my island done and moved, and I still have one extra villager house on the beach that I've been putting off haha. But yes, I move them to the beach (along with flowers!) If you split your time and only work in sections the moving isn't as expensive (figuratively) because you can make money in-between via diving/fishing/selling stuff it also allows for breaks in-between sections and that's super important to not overwhelm yourself!
^ along with the custom path thing, yes it's a lot easier if you can find similar replacements instead of erasing the whole thing! I switched from a city theme to medieval/foresty so I kinda had to take time to manually get rid of the paths (plus the in-game ones bc I put them under the customs so they will show in the map otl)
