@safe sable You could try a 'suburb' style layout - mine are all on one flat area, arranged in twos side by side - a bit like terrace housing in a city. I've seen people use twos or threes on cliffs as well - so a bit like ascending houses!

@spark peak Sounds like a nice idea! I've learned the hard way it can be better to work on a smaller scale though - so making sure you can see details within the frame of where you're standing - often making large cliff areas can look really good from a far view/while moving around, but taking pictures of them is a pain! You could make a slightly smaller set of cliffs than the one on the left and just have it be decorative. Mine has a lighthouse on it actually - so no bigger than a 4x4 cliff really, and then put a curving path around it towards your shopping area

@hollow coyote Persevere! Honestly a lot of terraforming is trial and error. I spent about 3-4 hours yesterday terraforming a pretty big area on my island, planted a rainbow garden, and THEN realised that it needed to be changed - my base idea was good but once it was in place I realised what needed to be moved and tweaked. The best way is just to get started, use inspiration photos then change it to make it your own. It isn't effortless like photos make it look - it's usually a LOT of hours of doing and redoing. But so satisfying when it's done 😄

@hollow coyote here is the disaster area for reference. 1. I miscalculated the amount of cliff space needed at the back so I can't build waterfalls there. 2. the rainbow garden is too far when viewed from here (which is where I want it to be seen from). So it needs to be raised, and maybe have sunken waterfalls. 3. I forgot (stupidly) that we can really see waterfalls at the back of cliffs, so it's a bit redundant to have so much cliff space where I'm standing! Now to re-terraform it.

@hollow coyote personally I looked at 5 star island yt tours to get inspo of what I might like and not like. And then also you can check out #dream-addresses🌜 for more potential inspo. But it’s honestly all trial and error! I also started with my entrance and worked my way out which honestly works out really well

@hollow coyote Try Instagram - the acnh community there is very active and there are lots of super inspiring posts. Why don't you start with your village area? Maybe make small islands for your villager houses to be on, or a terraced cliff with ramps and place villager houses there, and add waterfalls around the houses? Don't think on a huge scale or lots of different special areas yet - just try working with buildings and areas you 'already have' - like museum, house, shops. You'll get more confident with placement and WILL rework areas lots 🙂 It's a slow game, take it at your own pace.

@hollow coyote I think if you have the money, I’d recommend placing the houses first on the beach. That’ll allow you to terraform and put pathing down without them being in the way! I’d also recommend thinking about whether you want a neighborhood layout or if you want them spread out! Then place a dirt pathing of 4x4 squares to mark out a space for each house! That’ll help you plan and see how you would like the set up! (That’s what I did)

@spring apex you can start by making a path from the airport to the RS (it can be straight, curved, etc depending on the direction you want and the placement of the RS), then start terraforming cliffs and placing items around it and see how you like it. You should get somewhat of an idea of what kind of entrance you want first (for instance an urban street with buildings and it curves to the RS, or a more natural winding path surrounded by cliffs, etc)

@woven drift I would think the RS is at a good place if you want to do city, because the roads are straight and you can easily have a street that goes from the airport to the RS via an intersection, plus the RS is far away enough where you have leeway of what you can put in-between! Such as a whole row of buildings :)

@brave storm I've seen both settings in fairytales. Forests are just easier to do in this game bc waterscaping and placement of trees near water is very unforgiving and have tons of restrictions. Just do what you feel comfortable with~ it's your vision after all

i personally like using cliffs behind buildings, you can't really put furniture behind buildings because you can't see back there so it helps use that space and it looks nice on the map

you can just make small ones to decorate on and they won't take up an incline, or big ones that have areas related to the building. lots of flexibility!

So maybe try to add a bit of variation to it. What I did with mine was, I removed the entire river and I plotted points not too far away from each other, and then connected those points together to make a thin river.

Then if you are happy with the shape of that river, you can increase the thickness to suit the river ends.

@steady fern For it helped to print out my map and try different river formations until I found one I liked. It doesn't take much creativity, you just need to try out different designs.

@steady fern in my opinion, how the map looks doesn't really matter cause it does not translate to what will look good on the island. Unless you really want something cute on the map like a heart or a moon, then you can terraform that and then work your island around it. It's quite hard to plan out the complicated maps that some islands have, most of the time people just terraform whatever they want (if you want it to look natural - rivers of varying widths, tiny streams, waterfalls, curves and mini islands within the river etc.) and the end result will be one of those very detailed maps. sorry it's a bit of a read haha

@vapid ether I put houseplants and used natural-ish items like the deer scare, beekeeper's hive, signpost etc. to decorate (if they are narrow cliffs and I have no space to build an 'area')

@faint arrow i used to have the same problem, the trick is to make all your cliffs as interconnected as possible. So if i climb up the cliff to my ables it's the "same" cliff as my home and restaurants. The only building that has an isolated cliff on my island is the museum. This way you dont need an incline for every single structure that you want on a cliff!

tbh whenever i need inspo i find it helpful to go to #dream-addresses🌜 and see how other people have their villagers laid out. it's better to see how it looks in game rather than on a map

you can also use a path to mark out a 4x4 section of where each house will go, that way you have all 10 plots planned out before you start placing

So I'm going to be remaking this area. It'll be changed to be a darker theme so that it fits an overall goth asthetic to fit Cherry, Apollo and Mathilda's area. So far I have the idea to change the fountain to be black, the trees to spruce ones, the flowers to dark variations of pansies, and the bushes to something like all holly. Only issue is what I'm changing the path out for. I could just use wood path but I use it a lot already on my island. Does anyone have any custom paths that are dark/gothic and that have a bit missing so that it'll match the curved edges of the area
