@woven drift it’s honestly all trial and error lmao I take all kinds of break from the game. You’re not going to have a perfect island, a lot of people are designers irl so it’s much easier for them to design islands and such. Personally I am a full time student taking classes year round, and i work part time as well as take care of my younger brothers when I’m not working. I barely have free time to play lol but those times when I do, I play and get little areas/parts done. So don’t give up yet! Youll find something in the game you’ll like and want to add to your island

My theme is basically magic - so I’m doing semi gothic/rustic but it also has some space/trippy stuff and also some cottagecore trinkled in because I like it and it fits
I think trying to get a base word or two to describe it can help - and also don’t restrict your theme too much. Don’t make it so you can’t add any variation to your theme because it’s fun to have different areas look different

Usually people go for things you can’t see irl easily, which is why resorts or woody areas are really popular and cute themes
You can also go for an urban town look and get one of those road custom paths if you want less clutter and easier terraforming

@smoky cove personally I also would recommend not picking a town hall that is really far. I have one that’s far and it’s a gift and a curse. And I agree, double south river mouths can be hard to work with, but it’s not that bad ! (I have those as well lol)

@dusky tapir oooh that's a nice area. depends on what type of island you're going for and if you want to keep the basic structure of the area or just redesign it altogether. if you have space, terraforming could be used here. if you're just looking for something simple, i suggest just adding slightly more furniture to decorate the area. or maybe even changing up the flowers? it really depends on how happy you feel about the design all together.

@tall trellis i have a fishing spot on my peninsula but it's not very "fishing"-y, it's mostly just a fishing spot because it has a rod lol. it's a part of dobie's home area so it's more catered to him than fishing.

@woven drift i loooove the bug cages. this area isn't particularly interesting on its own, it's more for the villager i was designing around than trying to do a zen theme, but i was trying to play with varied heights of objects that still provided an ocean view and matched the color theme of the area

@wary pewter from what i'm understanding you probably have a lot of trees and flowers in the way? if you move a house on terrain it'll automatically get rid of the trees/flowers surrounding it, so if you need to move your houses anyway (on the same level) that could be something to keep in mind. yes, it's going to be a lot of work, but hopefully by now you have a better idea of what you want your layout to look like?
i used to have a floor level spooky forest with TONS of red pansies and black tulips... which i moved all to the beach (which made the beach look super creepy) temporarily... just to later realize i don't need all those flowers 😂 . it took a lot of work moving/digging those flowers up like 3 times, but imo it was satisfying because i did the work. if you feel like you need help with gardening though, you can always hire someone in #flower-plants-trade -- a lot of people offer deweeding/tree removal/flower removal/rearranging for pretty cheap (bells) etc!

@spice zealot I'd put lots of tropical colors to match her exterior ~ whites and oranges and yellows. I find that most flowers that I pair with hyacinths look beautiful, for example white hyacinths and orange cosmos :)

@distant moat I think the clothesline is a cute touch :) imo, the clothesline DIY looks a little better than the game item so if you have that you can consider swapping ~ also, I'd add a bucket or washtub nearby!

Orange is like the opposite of blue right in some color theory thingy (omg I'm vague). Orange windflowers and maybe blue ones would really fit!
Windflowers somehow seem really tropical and less "elegant/uptight" unlike Roses. If I were to tailor a flower garden for her I'd do windflowers and hyacinths
