I really have no idea on what theme my island belongs. Haha but I got plenty of stuff going on the island.

@torpid cosmos first you should add some trees, and a little more space on
the first floor, after that change the flowers, depending on what u like or theme, cosmos are nice but you should use hyacinths or mums or tulips, those give a nice cottagecore vibe. And you could plop some white lillies randomly too! And maybe get a different path? Probably stepping stones, so you can put the flowers in between the path. Oh! And add a couple weeds here and there, but not bunched up, you should also add a street lamp to where it’s most aesthetic, again with the flowers, at the beach, are you going to keep them like that? What you should do is a little picnic area, with some shell path patterns , my #1 recommendation is scatter the flowers, it’s more natural for cottage core. Maybe even add a little seating somewhere

I regretted it because I didn't really have the chance to experiment...really considering moving them all back to the beach and starting over with a scattered layout

If you want a spirited away themed island, I would take screenshots of your favorite scenes (ie: the buffet) and try to recreate them on your own island. I believe there are also island tours on youtube that have those types of themes.

@raven geyser add more trees (trees add depth and vertical height, so your island doesn't look "flat"). What I would do is section off the island into parts and then work from there. It looks like you have a neighborhood going on, but it looks like the houses take up different lengths of land. Maybe try to move the bottom 2 rows of housing so that it looks more even from a birds eye view standpoint? From what I can see is that you're trying to make the rivers curve naturally, but instead, they look manmade. One tip is to add smaller curves to make it more natural. For example, that jagged edge on the west coast of the RS island? That's a bit sharp isn't it? Cut the piece off and round the edge. You mentioned adding a park right? You can add it in that dark green bit below the museum. Just use the sand path and redeem your nook mile points for some park furniture like the park clock, park bench, jungle gym, springy ride on, and the sandpit. (1/3)

(2/3) From my understanding, it looks like you're using mannequins as units of measure? It's easier to use the non-clothing custom designs and placing them on the ground, but that can be quite tedious. Other than my earlier point about moving the houses so that they're even, you can also try putting them in neighborhoods of 5 and 5 or 6 and 4. The rivers are what's taking up most of the space on your island. Rivers don't have to be 3 or 4 squares wide, they can be 2 or even 1. Honestly, I'd leave the rocks alone for now, it's easier to figure out what you want to do with them once you've planned out most of your island. Flowers: pick and choose some of your favorite colors and stick with them!! OR you can have different flower colors for different areas (for example, the main part of my island had only white flowers, but I created a butterfly garden that had yellow, purple, orange, blue, and pink flowers). @raven geyser

(3/3) For empty spaces, there's a message in pinned for things you can build/decorate with if you're running out of ideas. You can fill them with anything you want tbh. Trash dump, places to put your fake art, small sitting area surrounded by shrubs, areas for vending machines, stalls, etc etc. There's lots of possibilities. You can also use the bridges that you built to make different areas. For example, that blue iron bridge? You can turn the area around it into some type of industrial place, like maybe an engineering den or a crafting area? That blue bridge gives off "city" and "innovation" vibes. The red zen bridge? you can put some bamboo around it, fill it up with red and orange flowers, place some garden stones (those are diy furniture), add some bamboo furniture, make it look "zen". For that log bridge? You can replace it if you don't like the look of it, but if you would like to keep it, you can make the piece of land that it's connected to a farm! @raven geyser

@left owl Of course! It takes time to realize an idea. Not everyone with a pretty island did it on their first attempt. For my island, it took 5-6 iterations before I got happy. You just need to test out ideas and you can also see what other people are doing and try it out. Every island has potential, just some people will need more time to realize an idea, but once you do, the sky is the limit

@grave field Some advice I gave someone earlier via DM:

Hey! So I have close to 800 hours in the game and have spent a very long time working on my island so I believe I can give some pretty helpful hints.

• So first, do not try and build all of your island at the same time. It gets overwhelming once you realize how much room you have and will burn out trying to fill in spaces. Focus on one or two areas at a time. While doing so, you can build up ideas for other places on your island.
• Imo, figure out the layout of pathways before constructing anything in a specific area. The pathways are arguably the most important part bc if it's a pain to get around, doesn't matter how pretty it is.
• Try and create a theme. This does not necessarily mean your whole island must follow the same narrative and can't diverge, not at all. What I mean is, try and use similar items around different areas. Nothing too stand-out. On my island, I focused on using log stakes, country fences, hedges, stone walls, and straw fences to make the areas feel similar, but not the same. I also have bears and mom's plushies everywhere.
• Focus on how the island looks to someone visiting. What I mean is, put things in a way that doesn't block out anything or make it inconvenient to look at.

Other than that, it's mostly up to you! Try out things and if you don't like it, don't hesitate to try something else.

@quaint pebble You'll need to do some trial and error to see what works and what doesn't work. There isn't really a definitive way of how to do it. I would recommend to try using a few different paths and make sure not to have the same one near one another, other than that, just testing and testing

It works exceptionally well for diagonals. For straight paths it can get meh if you go too many tiles. Anything past 5 tiles looks too much the same imo

@grave sigil do you plan on putting your houses in one area or separating them. i personally like to separate them just because its a bit more natural and it gives them the opportunity to move and explore the island more. but heres some common layouts. for organizing homes. as for terraforming, its honestly just trial and error. and it depends if you want something more natural or not

@oak stirrup ooh we have the exact same layout! I pretty much just took out the middle part of the river to connect later 🙂 also rivers can connect in other ways. They can form into ponds or start at the top of a waterfall

@void venture When in doubt, use cliffs to obscure the town hall building. Mines pretty much the same as yours in placement, but it’s over to the left a bit more.

try this if you're trying to do just an orchard. if you want a large park, get a lot of fences in an abstract large pattern, and then build some paths, with trees and shrubs

@trail seal normally id make a pond or lake near those places, and have rivers starting with a waterfall for where you want it , or i have a cliff near one of the river gaps so i put a waterfall there to look natural

@weak cosmos I started with a general plan of my island using an online design site. Then adjusted it as I went

@weak cosmos a lot of trial and error, and i didn't do everything perfectly the first time around. i had my paths as 2x2 thickness but later on (like 3 weeks later) decided i wanted it to be 1x1, used to hate rounding my corners but eventually (again, a week+ later) decided i wanted some path corners to be rounded. just try things out!

@weak cosmos I'm sure you're asking about the tool, I believe you need to get a 3 star island, then you unlock them. if you just need inspiration, start at your airport, and then branch from there

@weak cosmos i first think on what im going to make, then terraform for a nice scenery, i do plan a little on bridges and ramps and try to use them as little as possible as theres a limit, i just go wherever it takes me and normally it turns out cool!

@weak cosmos i would start in the front and work in one area at a time. dont rush it. its very overwhelming. honestly if you rush it, youre gonna end up not liking half of it and tearing it down and redoing everything.

@cold panther i prefer my villagers scattered just because a few reasons. 1) it gives them their own areas and it doesnt really matter how big it can get. 2) they are more willing to explore other parts of the island when they are visiting their friends.3) it looks more natural to have them spread it out but it also depends on your island's theme. ive had it when they were together and they wouldnt explore the island. but since i scattered them, they are exploring more of the island when they visit their friends. heres my map.

@cold panther ive redone my island 5 1/2 times. its intimidating, but its worth it. just keep what you really like and try to see if you can condense it.

@teal kelp its laggy when you have a lot of custom designs out. i have a few areas like that because all of my stalls, flooring, and simple panels that have custom designs on it.

@cold panther just like @noble root said, you can group some up. i grouped up sprinkles and marshal because they are part of my shopping plaza area where they own shops. and i grouped marina and poppy because i didnt have anywhere else to put them. so i put them in my water bungalow area.
