i'm totally lost on how i should terraform the bottom left and top center of my island, any ideas? even just drawing a path thru that i should keep open and surrounding the rest with cliffs would help a ton 😭

i'm considering either moving both shops against a cliff at the very back or moving nooks closer to ables. also, the house behind ables is the one being transferred, and the other two i'm not sure what to do with. i might turn the back area into a farm and make whatever open space in the bottom there is into a fruit tree orchard nestled into some cliffs but idk

i had the exact same problem. you need to make the terraforming more “natural”, than to have everything in symmetrical shapes. try experimenting and see what works best for your island🥰

You could plan areas around the buildings in the game. For example, figure out if you want a grand entrance with a lot of terraforming for the museum.

That helped me a lot, in my experience.

unless you’ve done one somewhere else on your island, i think an outdoor marketplace could definitely go there! half or 1/3 of the space could be cliffs and a rooftop dining area, while the rest of the area could have pergolas, storefronts, and seating. just brainstorming over here, but i think it would look great!

oh and also, i listened to some of the music on your spot page. i think they sound really well made kristian! the songs are really nice soothing and slow <3

@fiery helm To answer your question from there #game-help-questions❓ message, the staple techniques to make custom paths look more natural are as follows:

• Don't make the path straight, make it instead wind around small items and plants, even if the fastest way would be to just make a straight line
• Make small dents/holes in your path by using corners or edge tiles where there isn't a need, and/or disconnect some patches of patterns from each other. (Make sure that the outline of the pattern do still match each other, in your pic I already see one mistake when the pattern ends abruptly)
• If the path you use has variants or special central decorative tiles, intertwine those in your path layout at irregular intervals
• Place/drop natural items on or around the path, for example the leaf piles, flowers, mushrooms, pinecones etc.

I believe Castle pieces are like other furniture in that they can randomly appear in Nook’s or the Nook shop catalog but they are SUPER expensive.

If you have the DLC you can unlock access by making a vacation home for one of the characters with the castle furniture set.

Hello, I’m playing for the first time and need help trying to decorate the island, just got the town hall and I’m trying to do a residential area at the start of the island

I definitely think some city street/sidewalk/plaza type custom designs would really help if you're going for a more residential area. There are a ton out there so I'm sure you'll find something that suits your needs (you could also just use the cobblestone terraforming path too under the fountain). Maybe some street lamps/benches between the houses, or like mini gardens with some bushes/flowers. Some type of archway might be nice too but off the top of my head I don't know of any kind of city/residential type arches. This is just what I see, hope this helps!

Dude your island just looking at the terraforming looks AMAZING. Just by looking at the map, I really wouldn't suggest anything maybe besides a pond in that big open space in the red rectangle? (idk if you're putting something there tho, and it might actually be a bit much idk) Also at the bottom of the big terraformed section (above the river mouth on the red side) maybe curve that little corner piece? Other than that it looks absolutely amazing and I can't give anymore feedback unless I were to see it in person. Great job!

My museum is surrounded by water but is on a secondary cliff. Aside from the fossil exhibit and the Dino screens, I've decorated it with blue and white flowers, and something I think looks nice is to have a seating area closer to the water with stunted trees. Having mugs/coffee on the tables could be a nice touch seen as the roost is in the museum

Well you could put a bridge over it right at the river mouth, then you wouldn't see the straightness. I can show you what that looks like on my isle if you want

If you want (a lot) more space for decor, then they should be a bit more spread out. Especially if you're planning on having more greenery in between each home in addition to decor.
Or you can plot their yards extending going outwards from the center of the circle for decor. Although since the homes are always oriented to face the camera it won't be cyclically symmetrical.

I’ve plan to make my island as a cataloging island. So I need to keep everything small but I still enjoy to play on my island. I make simple 8 design for all my villager house, in both 8 circle I made small river and rock stone. Cus this is gonna be 3/4 island for cataloging, I design part by part on small composition. So to me it looks like you're going for a more kidcore theme with the paths, but would you rather go with a more natural look or a more city look? If you want to go down the city path, I would recommend using cliffs and simple panels to make fake buildings, but you can do it in a kidcore-themed way (maybe someone out there has pink windows or smth). Youc can maybe make like a main street and put some/most/all of your villager houses along it and your shops too. Or you can make a well-defined neighborhood instead. Streetlamps, sidewalks, benches, etc would help. Definitely get some trees, flowers, and bushes in there as well. I personally also love to use custom designs to fill up empty spaces, so maybe more of those as well. Making cliffs with waterfalls/rivers would also make good use of empty space and give more dimension to your island if you'd rather go with a more natural look. If you need more inspiration asking here is a great idea, but I'd also go take a look at Pinterest, I've gotten so many ideas from there and its helped me figure out what to do with my island. Make a Pinterest board and save ideas so you can always come back to them. Hope this helps!

Both the river and cliff terraforming options are great imo, but if you're wanting to go for a halloween themed city island I would purchase the cliffs first so you can make those fake buildings. Whatever looks good to you is great! I personally tend to try and go for not a very blocky-type neighborhood but thats simply due to my theme and all that and preferences. If you like the more standard neighborhood style I say it looks great!

I think it’s beautiful (: maybe a different incline and a different shade of the peach chair? A different incline might transition more smoothly into the pathing, and the yellow of the peach chair is so much brighter than the rest of the color palette that I think something more muted could fit better (the pop of color also looks nice tho!)

Islanders with citycore islands, I need your help!
I started over in ACNH and this time I want to create island inspired by Japanese towns/cities. I cleaned up my island and now im struggling with layout...
I don't know what to do with plaza, i would like to have a lot of roads and sidewalks, so grey - road, orange - sidewalk.
At first I thought about making a waterfall next to the plaza and then proceed to relocate houses, but what to do with sidewalk? How will pedestrians go without a sidewalk? It doesnt make sense to me

i'm not good at layouts for islands, but i can tell you one thing for sure, one side of your island is a little plain. i think you should have gotten an island with more rivers but what's done is done. i also think you should have given the campsite and museum some space, but if this is a bad idea to you, i was just suggesting. i'm not good at layouts, after all! i hope you can figure things out soon! 👍

(also at the walkway from the airport to the plaza, maybe you can add some shrubs, trees, and wooden stuff there. it will give a more japanese vibe if you have some lanterns, but i think in m opinion the paper lantern thing is good even if you don't customize it to have a cherry blossom tree design on the 'paper' part of the lantern.)

that's actually the island type i have, but in my opinion you should have kept the rivers so you can add japanese bridges to add more japanese vibe.

I also had a mini map drawn out for me on Etsy so I had a layout I knew I wanted. But I first do cliffs, then water scape

Does anyone have any ideas on inspiration to decorate my island, I’ve had to start from scratch and I’ve been collecting items but I have no idea what to do, I love playing but feel so overwhelmed about designing a whole island, but hate it being plain 😞

you can always go the nature/forest route.. it's easy to get away with filling areas with trees and the pathing doesn't have to be neat... OR you can do a suburban town kind of theme with pretty straight and basic paths and you can organize your shops and homes into their own seperate areas

theres honestly no pressure in choosing an island theme, and tbf you can always combine them! the world (or island in this scenario) is your oyster and you can do whatever you want -- i totally get not wanting to pave and terraform everything, i barely touched my cliffs and rivers, just cleaned them up a bit. i have laid path down on most of my island, but if you dont want to do that, there are always ways to still have a sense of structure within your island (a lot of people did it in animal crossing: new leaf for example, because we only had access to 10 custom design slots) here are a few pictures of my island which is "theme-less" (i would take better ones but im not on right now and i just had these saved)

both themes i think are very basic and easy to find furniture items for and you can find plenty of inspo for filler areas like parks, shopping centers, picnics etc

it can definitely be overwhelming... i always say start with your airport entrance, mess around with different decorations and terraforming and from there you can spread out and see where it takes you!

here are some pictures i found (not mine 🙏) — if you're going for a more natural theme, i suggest using terraforming to your advantage and hide the rs building, and make a path curving around rs to make it seem further away. also, trees and bushes are super helpful just to create a barrier/partition of sorts to eliminate the cramped feeling !! if your island is city-like or just one of those very orderly, simplistic islands, you could make a boardwalk, a "main street" of sorts that runs past rs, or honestly just making a path straight to it is no big deal

you could also kinda just turn the whole thing into an airport entrance, like have benches, a bus stop, etc ORRR make the entire area into a "square" of sorts, like with stalls, banners, etc (you can use the brick path from in game, there are also custom designs that match the rs brick), i have a plaza connected to my rs and its lowkey cute

since my island is more town-y instead of natural, i put most of mine in a little neighbourhood, with abt 3 or 4 of them branching out/in different places around town

for example i put tangy's house near the other shops because i wanted to make her house and exterior into a juice bar/cafe so it didnt make sense to put it in the neighbourhood, and i put lolly's cabin in a wooded area separate from the neighbourhood which gives it a cozier feel
